Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Bangladesh's embattled prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, resigned Monday and fled the country after protesters stormed her official residence in the capital amid a growing revolt that began over quotas for government jobs in which hundreds of mostly protesters have died.
The announcement from the head of the army, Gen. Waker-uz-Zaman, came after security forces were overwhelmed by thousands of people incensed by a violent government crackdown descending on the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of Dhaka, setting cars and offices ablaze.
Footage circulating online shows protesters celebrating inside Hasina's residence, removing furniture and elsewhere in the city trying to tear down a statue of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, former prime minister and leader of the country's independence movement, who was assassinated in 1975.
Promising the formation of an interim government, Zaman pleaded with demonstrators to call off their protests.
"Whatever demands you have, we will fulfil and bring back peace to the nation, please help us in this, stay away from violence," said Zaman who promised the military would also back off.
"The military will not fire at anyone, the police will not fire at anyone, I have given orders."
Hasina arrived by helicopter in India at a military airbase 17 miles east of Delhi on Monday evening with the BBC reporting that she may be en route to London, citing unconfirmed reports.
A spokesman for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday that he wanted to see urgent action to "ensure democracy" won out -- but made no mention of Hasina coming to Britain or any discussions regarding where she might go into exile.
"The right to peaceful protest must be protected and never subjected to violence, and we call on the authorities to release all peaceful protesters and ensure due process is followed for those charged and prosecuted," he added.
"I hope that swift action is taken to ensure that democracy prevails and accelerate the process towards peace and security to people in Bangladesh."
Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, said she had been considering resigning for the past 24 hours and had left the country for her own safety at the insistence of her family.
He rejected the accusations leveled at the 76-year-old of outstaying her welcome after four terms totaling more than two decades during which she gradually morphed from the democratic icon catapulted into office in a people power uprising into an authoritarian leader amid crackdowns on dissent and allegations of graft.
"She has turned Bangladesh around. When she took over power it was considered a failing state. It was a poor country. Until today it was considered one of the rising tigers of Asia. She's very disappointed."
In Dhaka, demonstrators ignored an evening curfew as unrest and looting continued into the night with demonstrators breaching the gates and damaging the residence of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan in the Dhanmondi area of the capital where smoke was seen coming from the building.
Protesters torched the city's Mujibur museum.
Northeast of Dhaka, 150 miles away in Sylhet, the offices of the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police and the homes of several councilors were attacked.
Hasina's resignation came a day after more than 90 people were killed Sunday during clashes between anti-government protesters and police -- 13 of whom were among those killed after thousands of people attacked a police station in the northwestern district of Sirajganj.
Sunday's casualties brought the death toll to 280 since early July when student protests over the partial reinstatement by the courts of civil service recruitment quotas -- where sought-after government jobs were reserved for supporters of Hasina's ruling Awami League -- erupted into wider, and violent, anti-government unrest.
Government crackdown efforts escalated from tear gas and rubber bullets to live fire, curfews and Internet blackouts bringing hundreds of thousands more people onto the streets demanding change and ultimately Hasina's resignation.
Student organizers had called Sunday for a national non-cooperation government boycott under which people would refuse to pay taxes and utility bills.

The Ladakh Protest: The 21-day Hunger Strike led by Sonam Wangchuk
Tumblr media
Ladakh, famously known as “Mars on Earth”, is the perfect destination where the mind slows down and the soul finds its path.
It is the northeastern Union territory of India, known for its highest mountain ranges, mesmerizing landscapes, beautiful deep valleys, crystal clear blue lakes, diverse wildlife, highest motorable mountain roads, Buddhist heritage, and the overall picturesque beauty of the place.
Ladakh: A union territory without legislature
Tumblr media
Ladakh, which was a part of Jammu and Kashmir since 1847, was separated from Indian-administered Kashmir in 2019 and was reconstituted as a Union territory on October 31, 2019.
People of Ladakh have constantly demanded separate territory since the 1930s due to the unfair treatment of Kashmir and the prevailing cultural differences between people of Kashmir and Ladakh.
The formation of Ladakh as a separate Union territory was widely celebrated. Still, people were disappointed because it was made a UT without a legislative assembly and would have a lieutenant governor, while Jammu and Kashmir had a legislature.
What does it mean to have no legislature in Ladakh?
Unlike J&K, Ladakh cannot elect its own representative.
Ladakh will be ruled directly by the central government through a lieutenant governor as an administrator.
The President of India has the power to form rules and regulations for Ladakh, according to Article 240.
Sonam Wangchuk following his Father’s footsteps
Sonam Wangyal was born in 1925 in a small village in the Leh district of Ladakh. He worked his entire life for the rights of the people of Ladakh. He had strong secular beliefs.
He was appointed as the MLC of Jammu and Kashmir from 1957–1967 and as the MLA from 1967–1972, due to his selfless service toward the people of Ladakh.
Wangyal was also an active member in the campaign for ST status for Ladakhis, which was carried out between 1982 and 1984.
In 1984, on his five-day hunger strike, the former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, visited Leh and requested Wangyal to withdraw from the strike with the promise of granting the status of ST to the people of Ladakh.
Tumblr media
Following his father’s strong morals and values and showcasing his devotion to the land and people of Ladakh, Sonam Wangchuk, a nature activist, engineer, innovator, and educationalist, began a “climate fast for 21 days” on March 6, 2024.
Why are they protesting?
The primary goal behind the protest is to raise awareness about the fragile ecosystem of Ladakh endangered by the growing industrial and developmental projects approved in New Delhi without consent, a threat posed as a result of having no legislative assembly in the Union territory of Ladakh.
Tumblr media
The residents of Ladakh have two key demands:
Full-fledged statehood for Ladakh: the residents have demanded to elevate Ladakh’s status as a Union territory to a full-fledged state. This would enable Ladakh to have its own government and the right to form its own rules and regulations in favor of the land and people of the territory.
Integration of Ladakh in the 6th Schedule of the Constitution: The 6th Schedule aims to protect areas with tribal and indigenous populations. By including Ladakh in the 6th schedule, it would allow the state to establish autonomous districts and regional councils.
These elected bodies will have the power to administer and protect the tribal regions of the area. It would give the Ladakhis more control over water management, land use, and cultural preservation.
What is the government’s response to the ongoing protest?
Unlike the response and action taken upon the hunger strike carried out by Wangchuk’s father, the present-day government is MIA.
The current government seems unbothered by the demands and protests in Ladakh, just the way it is, and the deteriorating situation in Manipur.
The pioneers of the movement and every other active citizen in and out of Ladakh are furious about the inaction of the government and the PM, who knowingly promised in his 2019 manifesto of Lok Sabha, that Ladakh will be incorporated into the 6th schedule of the constitution. But apparently, they failed to honor their promises.
Tumblr media
Lack of media coverage:
The lack of media coverage is infuriating for the people of Ladakh and the active citizens of India.
Although the independent media and journalists who are physically present in the ongoing protests do cover the news for the country, But it is disappointing to witness the lack of coverage by mainstream media and the big houses.
The scarcity of coverage of this major issue conceals the truth from the nation. The nation wants to know more about the concerns and affairs of the territory. Unless there is some news from the local media houses, the lack of coverage by the recognized media houses keeps the common man from knowing what is really happening there.
The current news on the Ladakh protest:
According to the current news,
Wangchuk survived solely on water and salt during the 21-day hunger strike (inspired by Gandhiji), which lasted from March 6th to March 26th.
In his speech, he talked about the “21-day fast"—that 21 days was the longest fast that Gandhiji kept during the independence movement.
Wangchuk states that the 21-day fast is over, but the protest will still continue. They will only rest when the government agrees to fulfill their demands.
Wangchuk said, “After me, women will begin a 10-day fast tomorrow. This will be followed by youth and Buddhist monks. Then it could be women, or I could come back. This cycle will go on.”
After ending his 21-day fast, Wangchuk stated “We will continue our struggle (in support of our demands). The gathering of 10,000 people at the venue and the participation of over 60,000 others over the past 20 days is a testimony of the people's aspirations.”
Conclusion:
All things considered, Ladakh, the "Land of High Passes," stands at a crossroads. While the echoes of their protests might fade from national headlines, the Ladakhi people's yearning for a brighter future persists. Whether they find resolution in the sixth schedule status or the full-throated roar of statehood, one thing is certain: Ladakh's story is far from over.

Master the PTE: Essential Coaching Options in Delhi
The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a popular standardized test designed to assess the English language skills of non-native speakers who want to study or work in an English-speaking country. With its increasing recognition by universities and governments worldwide, mastering the PTE has become a critical step for students and professionals in Delhi who wish to pursue international opportunities.
However, like any language proficiency exam, achieving a high score in the PTE requires more than just a good grasp of English—it demands strategy, familiarity with the test format, and targeted practice. This is where PTE coaching classes in Delhi can make a significant difference. These coaching centers offer expert guidance, personalized study plans, and practice resources that help students build the skills necessary to excel in the exam.
Why Opt for PTE Coaching?
While some students prefer to prepare for the PTE on their own, enrolling in a coaching program offers several key advantages:
1. Expert Guidance
PTE coaching centers provide instructors who are well-versed in the test format, scoring system, and techniques to help students maximize their performance. These experts can identify a student’s strengths and weaknesses, offering targeted feedback and advice.
2. Test-Specific Strategies
The PTE is not just about language proficiency; it’s also about knowing how to approach the test effectively. Coaching classes teach students time-management strategies, methods for tackling each section, and tips to improve accuracy and speed.
3. Mock Tests and Practice Materials
Practice is crucial when preparing for a test like the PTE. Coaching centers offer a wealth of practice tests, including simulated exams that mimic the real test environment. This allows students to familiarize themselves with the test structure, gain confidence, and track their progress over time.
4. Personalized Feedback
One of the most valuable aspects of PTE coaching is receiving personalized feedback. Instructors provide detailed assessments of a student’s speaking, writing, listening, and reading skills, offering suggestions for improvement in each area.
5. Motivation and Accountability
Self-study can sometimes lead to procrastination or lack of focus. Joining a coaching class provides structure, discipline, and motivation to stick to a study schedule and reach your target score.
Top PTE Coaching Options in Delhi
Delhi is home to numerous reputed PTE coaching centers that provide excellent preparation for the exam. Below are some of the top options for students and professionals looking to master the PTE in Delhi:

India Foreign Minister Jaishankar visits Pakistan for 1st time since 2015
India’s Foreign Minister visited Pakistan on Tuesday, marking the first visit by a top New Delhi official to the neighbouring country in nearly a decade, Indian media reported.
Subrahmanyam Jaishankar will travel to Islamabad for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit to “represent India at the meeting,” the foreign ministry said on Tuesday. Both sides said no bilateral talks were planned and Jaishankar’s visit would strictly follow the SCO schedule.
The two nuclear-armed countries are bitter adversaries who have fought numerous wars since they divided the subcontinent under British colonial rule in 1947.
The SCO comprises China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus, with 16 other countries as observers or “dialogue partners.” The SCO is sometimes described as an alternative to the Western-dominated NATO military alliance. The Indian foreign ministry said in a statement:
“India remains actively engaged in the SCO format.”
While the SCO is mandated to discuss security issues, the Islamabad summit is expected to focus on trade, humanitarian and cultural issues.
The last time an Indian FM visited Pakistan was in 2015, when Sushma Swaraj attended a conference on Afghanistan.
Later that year, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a surprise visit to Lahore to meet his then counterpart Nawaz Sharif, raising hopes of warming relations with Pakistan.
Relations deteriorated sharply in 2019 when the Modi government cancelled the limited autonomy of Indian-administered Kashmir, forcing Pakistan to suspend bilateral trade and downgrade diplomatic ties with New Delhi. Kashmir, where a protracted and deadly insurgency against Indian rule continues, is divided between the two countries and is wholly owned by both.
Pakistan’s former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was in the Indian state of Goa in 2023 for the SCO meeting where he and Jaishankar had a verbal altercation.

Do You Really Need a Lawyer for Partnership Firm Registration in Delhi?
Setting up a partnership firm in Delhi can be an exciting venture, promising both growth and collaboration. However, the registration process can seem daunting, leading many aspiring entrepreneurs to wonder: "Do I really need a lawyer for partnership firm registration?" This article explores the ins and outs of partnership firm registration in Delhi, highlighting the complexities of the process, common legal challenges, and the potential advantages of hiring legal assistance.
Understanding the Partnership Firm Registration Process in Delhi
Registering a partnership firm in Delhi involves several steps governed by the Indian Partnership Act, 1932. Here’s a breakdown of the registration process:
Choosing a Firm Name:
The name should reflect the nature of the business.
Ensure it’s not similar to any existing registered firms.
Drafting the Partnership Deed:
A legal document outlining the terms and conditions of the partnership.
It should include details such as the partners' names, business objectives, profit-sharing ratio, and dispute resolution mechanisms.
Gathering Necessary Documents:
Identity and address proofs of all partners.
PAN card and Aadhaar details of the partners.
Address proof of the business premises.
Registering the Partnership Deed:
Submit the partnership deed along with the required documents to the local registrar.
Pay the prescribed registration fee.
Obtaining Certificate of Registration:
Once processed, a Certificate of Registration is issued, confirming the firm’s legal status.
Understanding these steps is crucial to ensure compliance with local laws and regulations, setting the stage for a successful business operation.
Common Legal Challenges in Partnership Firm Formation
Establishing a partnership firm is not without its hurdles. Common legal challenges include:
Disputes Among Partners:
Conflicts over profit-sharing, roles, and responsibilities can lead to legal disputes.
Non-Compliance with Regulations:
Failing to adhere to local business regulations can result in penalties or registration cancellation.
Drafting Ambiguous Partnership Deeds:
A poorly drafted deed can lead to misunderstandings and legal complications.
Taxation Issues:
Understanding the tax implications and responsibilities of a partnership firm can be complex.
These challenges highlight the need for thorough preparation and legal understanding when establishing a partnership firm.
When Should You Consider Hiring a Lawyer for Registration?
While it’s possible to navigate the registration process independently, certain situations warrant professional legal assistance:
Lack of Legal Knowledge:
If you’re unfamiliar with the legal jargon or the registration process, a lawyer can provide clarity.
Complex Partnership Structures:
If your partnership involves multiple partners or varying investment levels, a lawyer can help structure the agreement effectively.
Dispute Resolution Needs:
If you anticipate potential conflicts, a lawyer can draft comprehensive terms to mitigate future disputes.
Compliance Concerns:
For firms engaging in regulated industries, a lawyer can ensure compliance with specific laws and regulations.
DIY vs. Legal Assistance: Weighing the Pros and Cons
When deciding between handling the registration process yourself or hiring a lawyer, consider the following pros and cons:
DIY Registration
Pros:
Cost Savings: Avoiding legal fees can save money.
Full Control: You manage every aspect of the registration process.
Cons:
Time-Consuming: Navigating legalities and paperwork can be time-intensive.
Risk of Errors: Mistakes in the registration process can lead to delays or rejections.
Limited Legal Protection: Without a legal professional, you may miss out on important protections and advice.
Legal Assistance
Pros:
Expertise: Lawyers bring valuable experience and knowledge to the registration process.
Efficiency: A lawyer can streamline the process, saving you time and reducing stress.
Legal Safety: Hiring a lawyer provides legal protection against potential pitfalls.
Cons:
Costs: Legal fees can add to your startup expenses.
Dependence: You may rely too heavily on a lawyer for guidance.
Documents and Legal Formalities: Can You Handle Them Without a Lawyer?
Managing the documentation required for partnership firm registration is a crucial task. Here’s what you need to consider:
Essential Documents:
Identify and collect all necessary documents for registration.
Ensure that they meet the requirements specified by the registrar.
Understanding Legal Terminology:
Familiarize yourself with legal jargon and terms that are critical for drafting the partnership deed.
Filing Procedures:
Understand the filing procedures, including submission deadlines and required fees.
Dealing with Rejections:
Be prepared to address any issues or rejections from the registrar.
Handling these aspects without legal assistance is feasible, but it requires careful attention to detail and a good understanding of the legal requirements.
How a Lawyer Can Simplify the Registration Process
Engaging a lawyer for partnership firm registration can simplify the process significantly. Here’s how:
Tailored Advice:
Lawyers provide personalized advice based on your specific business needs.
Efficient Document Preparation:
They ensure all documents are accurately prepared, minimizing the risk of errors.
Navigating Legal Complexities:
Lawyers can easily navigate complex regulations and requirements, saving you time and hassle.
Post-Registration Support:
Many lawyers offer ongoing support for compliance, taxation, and legal advice post-registration.
Final Verdict: Is a Lawyer Essential for Partnership Firm Registration in Delhi?
The necessity of hiring a lawyer for partnership firm registration in Delhi largely depends on your unique circumstances. If you have a solid understanding of the legal process, feel confident in handling documentation, and foresee minimal complications, you may manage without one. 2. Why Companies Need Corporate Law Firms
Whether a business is a startup or a large multinational corporation, legal challenges can arise at any stage of its operations. Here’s why partnering with a corporate law firm in India is essential:
Regulatory Compliance: India’s regulatory environment is complex and constantly evolving. A corporate law firm ensures that companies remain compliant with the latest legal and regulatory standards. This includes everything from maintaining statutory records to filing mandatory returns.

5. Choosing the Right Corporate Law Firm in Delhi
Delhi is home to many of India’s leading corporate law firms, and choosing the right one can have a significant impact on a company’s legal standing. Here’s what businesses should look for when selecting a corporate law firm in Delhi:

Reputation: Check the firm’s reputation in the legal community and among businesses. Look for reviews, client testimonials, and industry recognition.
Global Reach: If your business operates internationally or is considering expansion, select a firm that has experience with cross-border legal issues and an understanding of international corporate laws.
6. The Importance of Corporate Governance
Corporate governance involves establishing policies and practices that ensure accountability, fairness, and transparency in a company’s relationship with its stakeholders. A strong corporate governance framework is essential for maintaining investor confidence, achieving long-term sustainability, and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
Corporate law firms provide guidance on setting up corporate governance structures and ensuring adherence to best practices. This includes:
