Singhania Group flow for sustainability‼️
As the Delhi assembly elections of 2020 drew near, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made a resolute promise to the public: to restore the Yamuna River to a state where it would be safe for swimming by the year 2025. Yet, as the deadline approaches, the grim reality of the river's pollution persists. Recent data from environmental agencies paints a stark picture - pollution levels in the Yamuna River have surged by a troubling 25% over the past year alone. The untreated effluents discharged by industries emerge as a significant contributor to this alarming trend. Furthermore, public awareness and concern regarding environmental issues have surged, with a notable 78% of individuals expressing a preference for supporting environmentally responsible companies.
In the midst of these environmental challenges, the Pollution Control Board (PCB) intervened, delivering a damning public notice against the Singhania Group. The accusation was severe - the group was accused of discharging an alarming 62% of untreated effluent into the already beleaguered Yamuna. This revelation cast a shadow over the reputation of the Singhania Group, a textile manufacturer with a distinguished three-decade legacy. The timing of this accusation couldn't have been more detrimental as the promising future suddenly seems uncertain for the company as share prices take a dramatic plunge in the wake of recent accusations. This unfortunate timing, just as optimism reigned, casts a long shadow over their previously rosy outlook.
The fallout triggered a domino effect, eroding investor trust and confidence. With scepticism about the company's leadership and practices rising, investors are pulling back, sending share prices spiralling downwards. Heightened media attention and public speculation further amplify the negative sentiment, compounding the downward trend.
This situation underscores profound questions about environmental responsibility, corporate ethics, and the integrity of political promises. While the actions of the PCB may appear justifiable in their mission to safeguard the Yamuna, the timing raises legitimate concerns about potential political motivations. Conversely, the Singhania Group finds itself grappling with the consequences of potential negligence in effluent treatment, underscoring the critical importance of responsible industrial practices.
In response to these challenges, the Singhania Group must embark on a concerted outreach campaign aimed at showcasing their ongoing efforts to address environmental concerns. Transparency, coupled with robust community engagement initiatives and tangible sustainability measures, will be key in demonstrating the group's unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. By aligning their corporate interests with the broader goals of societal and environmental well-being, the Singhania Group can chart a course towards a more sustainable and socially responsible future, thereby regaining the trust and confidence of the public.
TASK AT HAND
As the Singhania Group's CSR head,
1) develop a CSR campaign to restore the company's reputation
2) an investment portfolio that prioritises sustainable solutions.
3) Make a website to promote the company's CSR actions and increase transparency.

The Guardian Angel
I arrived in 2025 with a lot of confusion, overthinking yet new hope. With new resolutions, I created a basic vision board for myself. All I decided to remain very productive this year. Enrolled in two online courses and had already started applying for new roles from December.
I had decided to write a research paper as well. I had started collecting data for it. I went to my hometown for the research work and a recruiter from WSP called me. Asked for my basic information and scheduled my interview. This job was suggested to me by an old friend.
An old friend! The first thing I was asked in the interview was, How did we know each other and how did we become friends? The answer to this is always a task. I don't remember how many times this question was asked to me. I always remained honest about it despite the fear of getting judged. FACEBOOK! Yeah, we met on FB in the beginning of 2011. Just like everyone else in their early 20s back then, we all were excited to talk to strangers on FB. Now this seems very very ordinary as the world is connected online. At that time, this wasn't the case. I don't even have a Facebook account anymore. We still remained in touch. How? We both don't remember I guess. Once in a year we used to call each other, sometimes to wish for Eid, sometimes just to ask about how we are doing and what not. When I was in Mumbai he called me to ask about it. When He was in Bangalore, I used to call him to know about his work and so on. Many times we decided to meet each other but couldn't proceed with it. In the beginning, I used to think he's just random online guy who's trying to flirt. I think with time we both realized that we both don't entertain that nonsense. Later whenever we talked it was only good wishes and prayers. Until May 2023, when I wanted to go to Bangalore for a course. I'm an ambivert who gets too scared to do anything new, at the same time who just want to take risk and try new things. When I had to go to Bangalore, I started asking many people if they had any contacts there, with whom I can stay post my course and explore the city a little. Indeed my last option was zostel and do everything alone but I needed a strong back-up. May be a habit of dependency. And there I called Him. He gave me assurance that he will arrange the stay.. till last few days, I kept asking other people as I wasn't sure I should take his help or not.. Or why would he even help me? An old facebook friend whom he never saw or met! Till the end I couldn't find any other option and I decided to rely on him. He's a kashmiri guy who by now had shifted to Delhi for work, but still he arranged my stay at his female colleague in Bangalore. She turned out to be an amazing person, Bangalore became a great experience because of her. I couldn't thank this guy and his Bangalore colleague enough for this great favor they did to me. Post that too we only talked to each other occasionally. As last year I was unwell, I posted about it on Instagram. As soon as He saw the post he messaged and called. I missed his call so I called him back. He missed it too. On the day when I became critical, I was making duas, was on IV before my surgery, the exact time he called me. That was an emotional and overwhelming time for me. I immediately sent him a voice message. Everyone closed and important for me, either came to meet me or called me and He was one of them. The cat guy (the guy who's chapter ended with December 24) didn't even bother to receive my call or listen to my audio message as he was #angry with me 🙄 but few people were there with me like angels just like my old FB friend. I was really grateful to everyone.
December arrived and I realized that I had bought 'Jashn e Rekhta' silver passes/ concert tickets in the month of August itself when I had no idea I will have to go through surgery for my health issue. I was partially recovered by now yet unsure to travel till Delhi and to stay. I wanted to sell the passes but again I tried thinking whom can I give those passes in Delhi for free? And This old friend came to my mind. I called him. He wasn't in Delhi but was about to reach two days before the concert. This was the golden opportunity for me to repay for whatever he had done for me. He being so polite, asked me to visit Delhi myself, which seemed impossible to me. I sent him passes and he attended the event. Sent me pictures as well. I was so happy that I gave them to the right person.
One day, he asked me to send him my resume. Little did I know, this was the turning point. I had discovered the job opening through another portal, and I had applied, unaware that it was the exact same role he was now guiding me toward. I remember how I felt when he reached out again after both of my interview rounds, telling me I was selected. It was so late that night, I didn’t call him, but instead, I bowed my head in gratitude, silently thanking Allaah. My heart was full, not only for the blessing I received but for the person who had been there every step of the way—guiding me, supporting me, and offering me words of encouragement when I needed them most. I prayed for him, deeply, with all my heart. I had no words to express the depth of what he had done for me.
Even after my selection, he stayed by my side, keeping me updated and always checking in. His kindness didn’t stop there. The manager would also call, asking for updates and ensuring I was informed. All of this was so overwhelming—it felt like everything I had prayed for had been answered.
After enduring so much hardship and struggle over the past two years, feeling lost and uncertain, I found myself in a place where hope seemed distant. My spirit was weary, and I questioned if things would ever change. But then, out of nowhere, came this person—a complete stranger who became a lifeline.
In those moments, I truly felt like ALLAAH was watching over me and sent him. If Guardian Angels exist, he is surely like them. The care he showed a stranger, the way he guided me through such time in my life—it was more than I could ever have hoped for. I don’t think I’ve ever made duas for anyone with such raw sincerity, with tears flowing, asking Allaah to bless him.
I’ve always believed that everyone who comes into our lives does so with a purpose. With him, I have no doubt that Allaah sent him into my life at exactly the right time—to lift me from despair and bring me back to hope. Truly, like a Guardian Angel. 🥹

1 January 2025
Dear Diary,
Happy new year! It’s 2025!
I have such a good feeling about this year, not just reinforced by horoscope readings on ChatGPT.
But what I want to do is a deep dive into the year past. I’ll be writing some and trying to find some older diary entries if I have those, because parts of the year are a blur.
January-March-end are honestly very, very blurry.
January
In January, I remember starting the year at Meghna’s house. We tried to do the thing with the grapes — which I bought and forgot to carry over. So we drank sips of wine (not under a table). I remember not enjoying work or not working much. Even my Snapchat memory seems outlay blank. What I do remember is, now that I’m looking at some videos, this was when I applied to ISB. How that feels like a whole lifetime ago, the way that that crowded my mind for those few months. The number of tarot readers I went to trying to understand if I would make it to ISB, the pandits, that was insane. They said I would, at first, and then said they saw a delay. At work, this was when we were working on the JLR pitch. That pitch altered how I saw PR Pundit, what I was doing there, and cemented my decision to leave.
February
In hindsight, this was Nani’s last, fully healthy month. I didn’t know that then. I see that I went to Goa (this is not a trip I remember entirely), it was Masi’s 60th birthday, but largely unremarkable to me.
March
The month I saw Taylor! It amazes me how I have next to no memory from this concert I spent so much money to see. After that, I remember Roshni coming to visit Delhi with excruciating detail. When we went to Dillinger Haat, the first tarot reader was so generous with what she said to me. The second one was less so, and when I asked her about my grandparents and their health, they told me that Nana would live to his sixties and nani would not. Hearing this, Roshni insisted we go meet Nani. She was hospitalised two days after. This is the last memory I have of her, not in hospital, wearing a gown outside the bedroom and those citrine earrings. I have those earrings at home now and I can’t stand to touch them.
April
When we went to the hospital in April, the first thing Nani said was, “acha hua na main kal Baal dhula ke aa gayi”. I donated blood, I spent the night at the hospital, I got into a huge fight with my parents (where I cut a credit card and chucked my phone against a wall — she was not giving regulated emotions), got a new job and quit the current job. Nani’s health oscillated and I fed into every possible delusion that she would be okay — I really did believe she would make it.
May
Nani died on 10 May. After two cardiac arrests in April, her kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, and possibly brain gave out. Every organ shut down with every new virus that entered her body. I never thought she would die. Even to her last day, I assumed she would make it. When 5 machines were hooked up to her trying to keep her alive. I thought she would make it. Even in hospital, when she told me she’s scared that something will happen to her, I ignored her. She died anyways. There were happy moments, some in my notes app.
June
I turned 29 in Goa, a trip we took for Nana! It was great, I think, Except the one time I broke a glass of champagne and cried like a baby — it’s giving disproportionate reaction because of unresolved grief <3
I also had my last month at PR Pundit. I finished on Friday and started strong at d’you on Monday. I really did a lot in my first week. That’s about the only time I worked at this job.
July, August, September
I’m clubbing these months because they were all just one d’youey blur of not having anything to do. Madhav came into my life and I liked him for about 3 days there. I quit d’you and decided to go back to PRP.
October
October gave first Diwali without Nani. Mamu fled to Goa. Oh, he also got married! We went to Geneva for that.
November and December
Unremarkable months, I think? December was interesting because of Rituraj. I’m interested to know if I will not remember when reading this back next year or if I will be engaged to him. I am hoping for the latter, I think.
I have a whole list of resolutions and good feelings and can’t wait for 2k25 to happen at full speed.
Love and light
Love always,
Ankita

Op-Ed: Water Scarcity Brings New Political Tensions
[By Connor Dilleen]
The link between climate change and human security has been on the global security radar for decades. Researchers have long understood how and why the earth’s climate is changing and what these changes mean for human and environmental systems. But the tenor of analysis of the implications of climate change has intensified in recent years as the scale of change and the enormity of the challenges facing humanity become clear.
The most critical element of the human security dimension of climate change is water security. As noted in the World Bank’s 2016 report on global water:
"The impacts of climate change will be channeled primarily through the water cycle … Water-related climate risks cascade through food, energy, urban, and environmental systems. Growing populations, rising incomes, and expanding cities will converge upon a world where the demand for water rises exponentially, while supply becomes more erratic and uncertain."
This assessment is particularly troubling because the amount of available fresh water per capita has already declined by more than half since 1960, and demand for fresh water is expected to exceed supply by around 40 percent by 2030.
New research indicating that 80 percent of high-altitude snow and ice will be gone by 2100 if the world continues along its current path, affecting 1.9 billion people and half of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, suggests that the global problem of water scarcity is rapidly becoming more acute. This research identified the transboundary Indus River basin—which serves densely populated and heavily irrigated regions of China, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan—as one of the most vulnerable systems.
For India and Pakistan—nuclear-weapon states already at odds over a number of issues—the significance of this could be devastating. Since 1960, tensions between the two countries over water have been managed through the Indus Waters Treaty, which has been assessed as the most successful water-sharing mechanism of recent times.
The problem is that the Indus Waters Treaty—and other treaties like it—are under pressure from the forces of climate change and population growth and from regressive policy approaches to water security. The commitment of states party to these treaties is wavering as they increasingly act unilaterally to protect declining water resources.
For India, climate change means that the question of water security is becoming an existential one. The figures are staggering: 330 million people—a quarter of the country’s population—are already affected by severe drought conditions. Analysis from 2018 predicted that Delhi along with 20 other major cities would run out of groundwater by 2020, affecting access for 100 million people. By 2030 the country’s water demand is projected to be twice the available supply. India’s population is predicted to surpass China’s by 2030 before hitting a peak of around 1.68 billion by the middle of the century, further straining available water supplies.
Pakistan also faces a dire future of overpopulation combined with severe water scarcity. The Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources predicts that Pakistan could face absolute water scarcity by 2025. Pakistan’s population has increased more than six-fold since 1951, and will increase further from around 208 million in 2017 to over 400 million by 2050.
These pressures are now manifest in several ways. Both Delhi and Islamabad are focusing on either finding unilateral solutions to their impending water crises, deflecting blame for gross mismanagement of water resources, or seeking to weaponise water resources in their conflicts with their neighbours. India has already raised the stakes by threatening to cut off the flow of water in the Indus River basin to Pakistan in response to terrorist attacks conducted by Pakistan-based militants.
Worryingly, the case of Pakistan, India and the failing Indus Waters Treaty is just one example of how the intersection of worsening water scarcity—driven by climate change, overtaxed groundwater supplies and growing populations—and politics is pushing countries to the brink of conflict over water.
Globally, tension over shared water resources is increasingly featuring in communal and interstate relations: China, India and Bangladesh are locked in a dispute over the Brahmaputra; China is also at odds with its southern neighbours over the Mekong Delta; dam-building on the Nile by Ethiopia has created a risk of war with Egypt; and Turkey, Syria and Iraq are increasingly at odds over the Tigris–Euphrates.
A key problem is that, while about 60 percent of global fresh water is supplied by the transboundary river basins, only around 40 percent of these basins are governed by a framework for dispute resolution. Climate change, combined with asymmetrical population growth, is further undermining the likelihood that signatories to water treaties will continue to be bound by them.
As the World Bank report notes:
"If current water management policies persist, and climate models prove correct, water scarcity will proliferate to regions where it currently does not exist, and will greatly worsen in regions where water is already scarce.’ But the problems facing the world’s freshwater supplies are also being exacerbated by politicking and denial by countries that are either withdrawing from global climate accords or fudging their commitment to those agreements."
The increasingly fractured global polity, where the global rules-based order is being challenged by countries pursuing zero-sum goals, Hunger Games–style policymaking across a range of economic, environmental and strategic issues will likely limit progress on water security. It will limit the space for cooperative management of shared water resources at a time when water scarcity is becoming more prevalent; it will reduce the prospects for countries to take meaningful and concerted action to restrain the anthropogenic causes of global warming; and it will fuel tensions between states.
One only has to examine the situation in India and Pakistan, and in the Middle East and the Nile Delta, to predict how these tensions will play out in the many countries challenged by worsening water scarcity.

India can win the war against air pollution | Opinion - analysis

In 2015, Chai Jing, a journalist, produced a documentary, Under the Dome, on the pollution in China, largely driven by the concern about her little daughter’s health. It went viral. At first, the Chinese government applauded it, but then got scared of how it was galvanising the public. Within a week, it was banned in China. However, the Chinese government understood the depth of public anger at the poor air quality. The then premier, Li Keqiang, declared a war against pollution. The China Clean Air Plan was made, which set a clear goal of reducing average annual PM 2.5 level to less than 50 by 2018. It had action steps, timelines, and resources were committed to achieving this goal. Air quality in Beijing and other cities improved, and the goal was achieved in 2018. China has now announced a follow up three-year plan to restore blue skies, and further reduce air pollution to reach WHO health standards. As China declared a war on air pollution, air pollution declared a war on India. By 2016, New Delhi became the most polluted capital in the world. Air quality in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR), and most cities in north India, is alarmingly poor. We have a heath emergency in which the children, the elderly, and the poor are most at risk. More than half of lung cancer patients in Delhi are non-smokers and suffer due to air pollution. Amitava Ghosh, in his book, The Great Derangement, points out the serious risks to our coastal cities like Mumbai and Chennai from the climate crisis. But with concerted effort, air quality can improve, as has happened in other cities. The political leadership has to take the first step, recognise the gravity of the situation, and declare a war on air pollution. It must then provide for financial outlay of whatever it takes to restore blue skies. There must be clear goals, like setting a target of an average annual PM 2.5 level of 60 or less by 2025, and 30 or less by 2030 from the current levels of 120, in Delhi/NCR and other cities. But to achieve this goal, it is important to appoint a clear functioning authority, led by an individual respected across the political spectrum, with a proven track record of delivering on goals, such as Nandan Nilekani orE Sreedharan. This authority should then be vested with a specific mandate of improving air quality, provided adequate resources, and given the power to operate across states, multiple levels of government, departments, businesses, and the agricultural and the scientific communities. It should also be able to work with public, particularly young people, and encourage them to change their lifestyles .This authority, then, can pursue a multi-pronged approach to tackle the issue. Here are ten possible steps. One, reduce coal consumption by increasing the current cess of ~400 per ton by 10% every year, and ensure financial incentives to coal-based power plants to bring down their emissions as per legal standards or convert to gas as fuel. Two, tax coal-based thermal power by ~2 per unit and provide these funds as subsidies to wind and solar power plants. Ensure that these renewable plants get priority of off take and payment over thermal plants. Three, tax all internal combustion two/ three wheelers and cars, and achieve electric vehicle targets set by the Niti Aayog. Limit the number of vehicles by restricting new licenses through high fees, or auctions or lottery. In China, all three are being tried. Four, impose additional taxes on petrol and diesel, gradually increase it, and use these funds to improve public transportation. Gradually, withdraw diesel buses and implement a plan to procure 100,000 electric buses and another 100,000 electric minibuses. This will reduce unit cost of these buses substantially. Five, reduce acreage under rice cultivation in Punjab and Haryana significantly by providing subsidies to farmers for switching to other crops. It will also raise the water table and improve soil quality. Six, reduce industrial emissions by reducing use of coal and converting to gas where feasible. There should be a particularly focus on industries like brick kilns, steel, cement, among others. Companies must have the goal of becoming carbon-neutral.Seven, improve indoor air quality in schools, colleges, hospitals, homes, offices, and public places. Eight, municipal governments should maintain pavements for pedestrians, bicycle lanes, have more plants and trees, and reduce road and construction dust.Nine, engage with the public, particularly children, to promote change in lifestyles, for instance, walking or using bicycle, and reducing electric consumption. And, finally, increase the monitoring of air quality by state governments by installing a network of monitors and satellite measurements. A clear political vision, the setting up of an all-powerful authority, and the implementation of these measures could help Delhi reverse the tide — and win the war against air pollution.
