On USSF’s Hiring Process // Sports
There’s Hardly a Reason to Criticize the Berhalter Hire, But Many to Question USSF’s Hiring Process
article by Ben Hunter
After being rumored as the frontrunner for the vacant USMNT job for last 14 months, former USMNT defender and current Columbus Crew boss Gregg Berhalter was announced as head coach by USSF on December 2. Berhalter played collegiately at UNC and then had a lengthy playing career in Europe, featuring for the likes of Crystal Palace, 1860 Munich, Energie Cottbus, as well as three Dutch sides. He became the first American to manage in Europe when he took over Hammarby in 2011. He was fired in 2013 and took over the Crew, where he has been since.
There are several surface level reasons to criticize this hire; however, it is far more complex than the twitter warriors portray it to be. People say that he wasn’t that successful so far as a head coach and that his brother, Jay, is COO of US Soccer. It’s hard to determine the validity of this criticism for one simple reason: USSF’s hiring process had next to no transparency. It’s also hard to assign blame for this lack of transparency. Carlos Cordeiro wasn’t elected president until February, and Earnie Stewart didn’t begin his job as GM until August. This is the biggest issue from my perspective; Cordeiro and USSF needed to have a GM working sooner to finalize our head coach sooner. Bruce Arena resigned on October 13, 2017, and it made sense why we would wait to hire a head coach. Dave Sarachan could handle the job for a little while, and we could look to get a coach who may become available at the end of the club seasons or World Cup. This did not happen, and the top candidate from the list of American names was ultimately selected months later.
USSF really dropped the ball during this hiring process, leading loads of unnecessary pressure being put on Berhalter. There was a 33 person shortlist, which was trimmed down to 11, and it’s unknown how many interviewed. The only two who are confirmed to have interviewed were Berhalter and Oscar Pareja, who just moved on from FC Dallas for Tijuana. It is rumored that there was a third candidate interviewed, but no one knows for sure. By not interviewing more candidates, USSF implies that Berhalter is such an incredible candidate that it’s not worth interviewing the likes of Peter Vermes, Tab Ramos, Jesse Marsch, Juan Carlos Osorio, or Julen Lopetegui (who reached out to the federation). Another name that I wish the federation reached out to is Arsene Wenger, since I think his play style would be perfect for developing our young attacking talent, but that’s a debate for another day.
It is clear as day that Jay Berhalter’s presence impacted the decision to hire his brother, no matter how much USSF insists he was not involved in the process. It’s not possible to think that a coach who did respectably—but by no means incredibly—as an MLS head coach is such a good candidate that hardly any others need to be interviewed.
Additionally, USSF put even more unnecessary pressure on Berhalter by taking 14 months to find a new coach since the catastrophic failure to qualify. This is not his fault, but it adds even more scrutiny to his job. USSF makes it even more clear that he was the top candidate all along, as they waited for him to finish his MLS season. MLS shouldn’t take priority, period. There was a major wasted opportunity here because Berhalter should’ve been put in charge in August, so that he could prepare for the three fall international breaks. The USMNT had six friendlies, each of which was against a good team. It was good to see Sarachan playing the youngsters; however, it would’ve been even better if they were playing in the system that Berhalter wants to utilize in the foreseeable future. Also, veterans like Bradley and Altidore should’ve been re-integrated under the new coach, so that they could provide experience and mentorship to young guys, while they all adapted to a new coach and system. There are only about 10 international games per year, excluding summer tournaments, so I think the opportunity to have played 6 games against top-tier opposition would’ve been invaluable. From my perspective, the media is not talking about this opportunity that USSF wasted enough. It is especially confusing since the hiring process took so long, but its length doesn’t seem to be justified from what we know.
Despite all of these questions and criticisms of the process, Berhalter may turn out to be an excellent hire. Actually, I think he is the right man for the job. I would’ve liked to have seen Peter Vermes considered, as I think his achievements at Sporting KC are very solid, and I wish we knew more of any foreign candidates considered. Overall though, I think it is good we hired an American. With our identity severely damaged, we needed someone who understands the US Soccer system and what it means to represent your nation in a sport that may not be on top, but is rising and has the power to influence people. Additionally, Christian Pulisic said he just wants someone who has a tangible plan on how to turn around the program. Berhalter will have a plan in mind without any doubt. He served as both head coach and technical director in Columbus, and he worked with a below-average budget, so having a plan was critical. His record may not be incredible with a 74-69-50 MLS record, but when you consider the market he worked in and the fact he made four playoff and one MLS Cup appearance, it is impressive.
All things considered, Berhalter is a slightly lackluster but solid hire for USMNT head coach. Criticism has come from the media for the outlined reasons; some of it may be justified, but that doesn’t mean Berhalter doesn’t have what it takes to lead what will hopefully be a successful USMNT period. He will certainly be prepared to coach this team in the upcoming cycle with a new plan and identity. All he has to do to silence the critics is one thing: win.

Gibbs is the second defender to withdraw hurt from the squad after Frankie
Fernando Alonso already has one hand on the drivers championship, take the 13/8 on offer from Ladbrokes about a Spanish stroll through the streets of Monaco.
If the thought of betting on reality TV or street racing does not appeal, there’s still a couple of football matches to take an interest in. The penultimate game of the season will see Swansea battle Barnsley for a place in the Championship and the Swans receive a confident nod at 6/4 to win in 90 minutes. Lee Trundle has played a starring role in recent years, but if the Swansea management can find a reinforced bench, there’s every chance that the Scouse superstar will be named as a substitute. Leon Knight has been preferred to Trundle in recent weeks and has banged in five goals in three games, it’ll be a cracking Knight for us all if we get on Leon at 6/1 to bag the opener.
Grimsby face Cheltenham in Sunday’s league 2 finale as we wave a tearful goodbye to the domestic football season. Grimsby have been boosted by the news that top Satta King Chart goalscorer Gary Jones can play after a successful appeal against a red card, he’s worth a nibble at 6/4 to score at anytime. The Mariners have dominated the Robins in the regular season, winning both games convincingly without conceding. Grimsby are worth a bet at 10/11 to win promotion; unfortunately, you can’t back them to plaice. Apologies.
States Lose Key Defender for WC
Charlton Athletic's new American signing Cory Gibbs will miss the World Cup with a knee injury it was announced this evening. The US international defender played the full 90 of the States' 0-1 loss to Morocco in Nashville last night but sustained damage to his right knee that will keep him out of the finals.
Gibbs, 26, has 19 international caps and has played for St Pauli in Germany, Feyenoord and ADO Den Haag in Holland as well as Dallas Burn in MLS before joining Charlton last month. The Florida born defender was expected to line up at center back for America in the World Cup, or at left back, where he has also played.
He is replaced by 32 year old Gregg Berhalter, a veteran of the 2002 World Cup, where his goalbound header in the quarter final against Germany was notoriously handled on the line by Torsten Frings, but failed to impress Scottish referee Hugh Dallas, who waved play on.
Berhalter, who captains Energie Cottbus in Germany and had a spell with Crystal Palace, has 44 caps for the USA and was a surprise exclusion from Bruce Arena's initial 23 man squad.
Gibbs is the second defender to withdraw hurt from the squad after Frankie Hejduk and the third from the World Cup pool in recent weeks following Manchester United's Jonathan Spector dislocating his shoulder playing on loan for Charlton in the Premiership.
The States' opponents in the first round in Group E are Italy, Ghana and the Czech Republic. The starting eleven now looks likely to be as follows: Keller, Cherundolo, Onyewu, Bocanegra, Lewis, Mastroeni, Reyna, Dempsey, Beasley, Donovan, McBride.
Chivas USA's former Ajax ace John O'Brien impressed in his first comeback game for the States last night, while PSV's DaMarcus Beasley again disappointed, adding to calls that Reading's in-form Bobby Convey should replace him on the left side of midfield.

Bundesliga: Weinzierl after S04 separation: "I am free"

Bundesliga: Weinzierl after S04 separation: "I am free"
Former Schalke trainer Markus Weinzierl has commented for the first time on the dissolution of the contract with the Königsblauen. Marvin Plattenhardt seems to be in the Premier League’s sights. And: SC Freiburg starts the preparation for the new season. Here are news and rumours from the Bundesliga.
Former coach Markus Weinzierl is relieved after the termination of his contract with Schalke, which runs until 2019. “That was important for me, and also for my head, to put a hook under it and just look ahead,” said the 43-year-old at Sky Sport News HD.
And Weinzierl continues: “This was now simply a strategic decision. In the past, it has always been the case that you always have to talk to two sides: the new club and your current employer. That problem is gone now and I am free. Now I can decide and do what I want. That was important to me.”
Weinzierl was on leave after finishing tenth in the 2016/17 Bundesliga season. Before that he had coached FC Augsburg and SSV Jahn Regensburg.
Marvin Plattenhardt is still under contract with Hertha BSC until 2023, but has aroused covetousness in other clubs. Especially clubs from the Premier League should be interested in the defender.
After Everton FC, AFC Bournemouth and David Wagner’s Huddersfield Town are now dealing with the 26-year-old, according to kicker.
Apparently, the Berliners would be willing to negotiate a transfer of Plattenhardt with an offer of more than 20 million euros.
With the top newcomers Luca Waldschmidt (Hamburger SV) and Dominique Heintz (1st FC Cologne), SC Freiburg has resumed training for the coming season.
Coach Christian Streich asked his team to the first unit on Monday at 09.45 a.m., in which four talents from his own offspring also participated in goalkeeper Constantin Frommann, central defender Keven Schlotterbeck, left-back Chima Okoroji and midfielder Luca Herrmann.
From July 20 to 28, Freiburg will complete a training camp in Schruns, Austria, before the first official match is scheduled for August 20: In the first round of the DFB Cup, the strike team must make it to the third division team Energie Cottbus. On the first day of the Bundesliga match, one week later, Freiburg will receive cup winner Eintracht Frankfurt.

GERMANY: THOUSANDS of Citizens March Against Merkel's Migrants
Cottbus, Germany.
Following a spate of knife attacks committed by teenage Syrians, two well attended marches have taken place in Cottbus, protesting against the islamification of Germany and the problems caused by Mutti Merkel's open border policies. The anti-migrant protests naturally had a counter from the left, but in a slightly surprising turn of events, the left could barely rally a crowd a quarter of the size of their opponents.
Bearing placards stating Cottbus for all and suggesting that to be concerned about migrant crime is to have a toxic brain doesn't appear to have been a message that gained much support. Mohammed Scharr organized the pro-migrant rally.
"After the attack [a knife attack committed by a Syrian on a German] people have got it into their heads that we are criminals, that we carry knives all the time. That we fight. It's not true."
The rally featured many flags from Middle Eastern countries, as well as the ubiquitous -though slightly puzzling- gay pride rainbow flags. Around 600 pro-migrant protesters were met by a counter-march of well over 2000 citizens demanding Merkel Muss Weg- Merkel has to go. Naturally, these people are tarred by the media as being little more than ignorant racists.

"We want the asylum seekers to respect us."
The population of refugees in Cottbus has doubled in two years to 8500. With a population of 100,000, the city of Cottbus on the Polish-German border has experienced a seismic cultural change. Hence the clashes. Hence the protests.
Steffen Kubitzki of the AfD said
"It seems there are too many. It seems that the situation in Cottbus has been underestimated. The first thing to do is to close the borders, to stop taking in refugees for now, and to sort things out here."
While Kubitzki doesn't go into details on what exactly needs to be sorted out, one doesn't have to look far for answers. According to SWR Actuell, in the region of Baden-Wurttemberg 42,443 crimes (excluding crimes of false entry to the country) were committed by 25,379 refugee suspects. For context, in that region in 2016 there were 90,000 refugees in temporary housing in the city, about 1.5% of the regional population. If these crime rates are replicated similiarly in Cottbus it is easy to see why having 8.5% of the population being refugee in origin is of concern to the locals.
"I'm scared to go out alone now."
youtube
"We are much more concerned about the assaults on bodily harm, ie the use of force by asylum seekers,"
So said Baden-Wurttemberg State Criminal Office President Ralf Michelfelder. The number of homicidal offenses involving at least one refugee increased by 95.5 percent to 7,670 cases. About 60 percent of these offenses were done in accommodation, but also about 40 percent in public. Furthermore, asylum seekers are strikingly represented in drug-related offenses and simple thefts. In the meantime, there is almost no crime field in which refugees would not be identified as suspects, according to Michelfelder.
The marches in Cottbus come from ideologically opposed positions.
Mohammed Scharr no doubt means well with his desire to show that not all 15-year-old refugees will stab you in the face. Unfortunately, he is arguing the wrong position- it is not the case that people think that all refugees in Germany are criminals. Indeed, genuine refugees are statistically less likely to commit crimes as it would invalidate their claims. Still, with over a quarter of a million applications for asylum in Germany from people claiming to Syrian in 2016, the issue has always been one of volume and the irreconcilable differences between Islamic cultures and the secular West.
For millennia human societies have granted asylum to foreigners fleeing persecution. Humans are generally kind like that. Even so, the rights of asylum in antiquity never came with the presumption that the refugee would become a favored citizen, or that such numbers of refugees would be admitted. As we see from the paltry repatriation efforts from the Germans to expel people who have gained entry to the country under false pretenses, it is clear that the majority of the more than three million asylum seekers who entered the country in the past three years are there to stay forever. It is this demographic shattering population movement that the people of Cottbus march against.
Two Syrian refugees wrote a letter of apology following the recent crimes by their compatriots.
"We are very sorry that two of our compatriots in Cottbus have attacked people. We apologize and would like to make it clear that this behavior is not right with us either. We want to tell you that we are here to live in peace. There is war in our homeland and we want to lead a safe and peaceful life.
Dear Syrians, dear refugees, we are guests here, we must accept the rules and have respect. Germany has welcomed us while our neighboring countries have closed the doors. Here we get everything we need for a new life. Please do not forget that and behave yourself!"
Unfortunately, the well-meaning actions of a few migrants will not outweigh the impact of increased crime, ghettoization and the creeping suspicion among Germans that their country is lost forever. Even former pro-migrant NGO volunteers are leaving Germany for the relative safety of Poland.
Rebecca Sommer, who formed a charity to help refugees in 2012.
"I thought that [their] medieval vision would change over time- but after seeing these situations repeat themselves and observe what was going on around me, a volunteer, I had to recognize that in the case of Muslim refugees, they have grown up with totally different values, they have been brainwashed since childhood and are indoctrinated by Islam and have absolutely no intention of embracing our values. Worse still, they look at us, the infidels, with disdain and arrogance... We have a huge problem with the left and the Greens [for whom] there is no 'German culture'"
The mainstream media in Germany reported that Cottbus has problems thanks to the German people in Cottbus being far-right extremists. The following video report goes so far as to allege the march is xenophobic, that the spate of violence in Cottbus was in fact started by locals, and that news reporters were assaulted by protestors.
youtube
Lügenpresse, genau.
The countermarch was in fact a broad cross-section of German society, as seen from the following video. Few flags were flown beside the occasional Bundesflagge. I see no overt Nazis here, though apparently one man was arrested for repeatedly giving the Seig Heil salute.
From the speeches given to the march, one speaker said
"He who can see no difference between his own and a stranger is immunodeficient. He won’t resist any threat. On July 18th one of our protesters in Cottbus wrote on a banner “Do I lock my house because I hate the people outside? —No! I lock it because I love the people inside. They are important to me and I want to protect them. For that reason, doors have locks and countries have borders.” My dear friends, this is the bottom line: loving your own and defending them has nothing to do with xenophobia."
youtube
With both the media and the German government against them, the Cottbus protestors have a gargantuan task ahead of them to spread their message.
Hope can be taken that the protests in Cottbus were so mismatched- the pro-border security march was far larger than that of Team Taharrush Gamea. This suggests that the left is, if not in full retreat on the issue, at least having a difficult time misrepresenting the blatantly obvious. The media cannot maintain the pretense that the 8500 migrants in Cottbus are angels while insinuating that 2000 Germans are literal Nazis while thousands of people are taking to the streets in denial of these lies.
Something will have to give.
