On a quiet morning 79 years ago today, Imperial Japanese forces attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. More than 2,400 Americans were killed and 1,100 more wounded. Twenty-one ships of the Pacific Fleet were sunk or damaged, including the USS Arizona. Shocked and angered by the attack, the country joined the Allied forces to fight World War II, inspired by the call of “Remember Pearl Harbor.” A moving reminder of the service and sacrifice of those who fought, the USS Arizona Memorial is jointly administered by the U.S. Navy and the National Park Service. Photos from the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument by National Park Service (@PearlHarborNPS).

A Matter of Honor
A Matter of Honor: Pearl Harbor: Betrayal, Blame, and a Family’s Quest for Justice by Anthony Summers and Robbyn Swan. Reviewed by Frank Tomasello, ACLS Mays Landing Branch.
The attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, remains a defining moment in the history of the United States as well as the world. Much has been written and debated about the apparent lack of preparedness on the part of the U.S. military given the likelihood of such an event occurring in the context of an increasingly escalating global conflict. In the immediate aftermath of the attack, both the public at large and the U.S. Military were eager to place blame for this perceived lack of preparation. The finger pointing quickly led to Admiral Husband Kimmel, who had only months before been placed in charge of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Kimmel, an Annapolis graduate, had an exemplary naval career prior to the attack. Through recently declassified documents, husband and wife team of Summers and Swan examine the efforts that Admiral Kimmel sought to beef-up security for the Pacific Fleet and the Naval base at Pearl. Much of what Kimmel tried to do was refused, or simply ignored, by higher authorities. Worse yet, success by the intelligence agencies in operation at the time had known for some time that an attack was imminent but failed to share this information with Kimmel, or chose to exclude him from it. Admiral Kimmel was relieved of his command 10 days after the attack.
Husband Kimmel spent the rest of his life trying to clear his name. His sons and now grandsons continue that effort. In 1999, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution exonerating Kimmel, but due to interference from the Navy, then President Clinton failed to act on it. That effort continues. The authors clearly show the unjust treatment Kimmel suffered for the actions of others but leave open for debate the reasons why the Pearl Harbor attack was seemingly “allowed” to occur.

December 7 marks the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, which led to the entry of the United States into WWII. In remembrance, we are sharing this document from the Navy Department Bureau of Construction and Repair dating to February 9, 1916. This document listing United States Navy vessels under construction at that time allows us to recognize and pay tribute to the ships and sailors of the eight battleships at Pearl Harbor, also known together as Battleship Row. It was these ships that took the brunt of the Japanese attack on December 7th 1941. Five of the eight battleships that made up Battleship Row—Nevada, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and California— were constructed by a variety of contactors with the details of their progress in 1916 documented here. The Shaw, a destroyer that was damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor is also present on this document. The Nevada, the Pennsylvania, the California, and the Shaw were salvaged and repaired following the attacks on Pearl Harbor, all of which went on to serve in World War II. The Oklahoma capsized during the attacks but was refloated and salvaged, though it was not fit to ever return to duty and was decommissioned on Sept 1, 1944. The Arizona was sunk during the attacks and was irreparably damaged and remains at the bottom of Pearl Harbor to this day at the center of the memorial.
