Dec 5 - Put away the two loads of laundry I'd run yesterday.

My big Christmas present for myself finally arrived... I now have a Steam Deck. Yay! Spent a big chunk of the afternoon doing things like getting it to pair with my bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and starting in on setting up things like Firefox on it.

Supper was pasta with tomato sauce and meatballs.

Dec 6 - Spent a lot of time crocheting today and managed to finish off the scarf that was my current project. Not as striking as the previous scarf, but since I'm making them to give away I figured I should get a good variety of options made.

I'm pretty pleased with how it worked out; I made it of two cakes of yarn, one kept as-is and the other rewound in order to reverse the gradient of the colourway, so that when I worked the scarf as one long strip the hanging ends came out with the same directionality on the colours. I also worked it entirely in single stitches so the gradients would come out smoothly.

Have a bunch of new yarns I'd ordered in Black Friday sales last week on its way to me, that should arrive tomorrow, so that's good timing for starting the next scarf.

For supper I dragged what should be the last tub of turkey bean soup out of the freezer.

The real face of St Nicholas, otherwise known as Santa Claus, based upon forensic reproduction. St. Nicholas' remains are buried in the crypt of the Basilica di San Nicola in Bari, Italy. These bones were temporarily removed when the crypt was repaired during the 1950s. At the Vatican's request, anatomy professor Luigi Martino from the University of Bari, took thousands of minutely-detailed measurements and x-ray photographs (roentgenography) of the skull and other bones. And yes, he had a broken nose, probably because he got in a few fights with heretics who then punched him right back. You'd better watch out, you'd better not cry, you'd better be good, I'm telling you why....St Nicholas is coming to town!

happy birthday to spanish democracy!

Today it is a national holiday, December 6 commemorates the anniversary of the 1978 Referendum, in which Spaniards approved the current Spanish Constitution.

Democracy almost ended abruptly due to a military coup in 1981, not unlike what happened in Korea, but the quick and decisive pro-democratic stance of the Monarchy restored order and the leader of the reactionary faction was tried and imprisoned.

Our constitution represented a process of reconciliation between left-wing and right-wing people and leaders, with the philosophy that the coming generations need not repeat the horrors of war. "That the grandchildren don't kill each other like the grandparents." This was a very broad process, including former fascists, formerly revolutionary marxists, conservatives, christian democrats, liberals, social democrats and everything else.

Spain is a constitutional monarchy where the King is the head of state, ceremonial (like in Britain or Japan for instance), and the head of the executive is a "president", who is elected by the parliament. There's a Senate and a Congress of Deputies. The Judiciary is independent, or should be. There are mechanisms for separation of power (though currently like all the world, we are suffering from the tensions created by power cliques, partitocracy, and some illiberal-leaning individuals, but that's another subject).

Here are some things I specially like about our constitutional philosophy:

-It recognizes the right to the protection of health -> spain has universal healthcare, the public sector is the quality pillar of our health system and not the private sector, meaning that when things go south even rich people come to public healthcare

-It recognizes the right of people to choose a lifestyle that is according to the "free development of personality" -> spain has some of the world's most advanced self-expression and anti-discriminatory LGBTIQ laws, including gay marriage and gender self-id

-The Capital Punishment is unconstitutional, as is torture or humiliation; the purpose of justice and any deprivation of liberty must be rehabilitation, not punishment in itself -> spain abolished the death penalty and thus also became eligible for EU membership

There are many things to cherish and celebrate about modern Spain and I'm grateful that our forefathers truly left us a better country than they found after the more unsavory periods of our history. I believe in remembrance so we never head down that road again.

It really feels like Redacted's content is in decline. I remember back around 2-ish years ago it felt like there was just so much growth and development. The world felt like it was getting bigger and more exciting, and his subscriber numbers matched it. Now it feels like he's more concerned with appeasing his existing fans by giving them the formulaic content that he knows "works". The community just seems like it's stagnating and the world feels smaller, with the content more repetitive.

The Monarchal Summit felt like it was a return to form and a little taste of what Redacted used to feel like. It feels sad. I really only stick around because I've met so many people through the community, and because I don't think any other VA has managed to build a fandom at the scale of activity that Redacted did. Maybe I'm wrong, I hope I am.

I still have the bits I was born with
