Debo was a debutante in 1938, a vintage year for beauties. According to a contemporary, Lady Lloyd, Debo was ‘very amusing and very beautiful and therefore very popular. She almost always wore tulle dresses with large crinolines, which made her stand out as that was an unusual style for the 1930s.’

About: Sawyer survived her year as a debutante, but the answers she was seeking about her mystery father only grew more complicated. Now, her cousin Lily has convinced her to join the initiation for an elite secret society, the White Gloves. When Sawyer discovers one of the members may have a connection to her mother's past, she goes along with it. When a body turns up in the lake, Sawyer and her friends realize that the stakes have turned deadly. Trigger warnings: death/dead body, guns, car accidents, injury, threats.

Thoughts: I didn't love this quite as much as Little White Lies. I wouldn't say it's strictly necessary to pick it up, since the first book works fine as a standalone, but I enjoyed the characters and the world enough that I couldn't wait to continue. The real mystery of the novel takes a while to make itself known, and I'll admit I wasn't all that invested in the secret society shenanigans.

However, I do very much enjoy the female solidarity in these books among Sawyer, Lily, and their friends. One would think books about debutantes would fall victim to the cattiness and infighting that characterizes so many fictional female relationships, but no-- these girls have each other's backs, as they should. If Little White Lies kept things well within the realm of possibility as far as "thrills", Deadly Little Scandals goes off in a completely bonkers direction-- and you know what? I'm here for it. I doubt it's the kind of twist anyone will see coming because it's so far-fetched, like someone internalized a lot of Sweet Valley High as a kid (you know, like I did), but I enjoyed being along for the ride.
