Happy birthday to Merritt Butrick, who would’ve turned 61 today! Sadly, Merritt passed away in 1989 due to complications with AIDS. While his death is tragic, he did leave us with several fantastic performances in the 80s. Standout roles include “Johnny Slash” in Square Pegs and of course Capt. Kirk’s son “David” in the Star Trek series (check out the sweater tied around his neck 😂)! Btw, if you want to watch a cheese fest, check out Death Spa! It’s so bad it’s...who are we kidding, it’s trash! 😂 What’s your favorite MB movie/tv/role? ❤️📼❤️ • •• ••• #merrittbutrick #actor #birthday #movies #television #vhs #vcr #videostore #80s #totally80s #podcast #80spodcast #startrek #captainkirk #frightnight2 #deathspa #cult #horror #scifi #comedy https://www.instagram.com/p/CErRhe3Ftht/?igshid=1uuxo978kpk55

Unforgettable: My Favorite Character Actors
Rosalind Cash (1938–1995)
I spent a large part of yesterday reading about actress Rosalind Cash, one of my favorite faces. I didn't know anything about her background so I was fascinated when I found several interesting articles and a couple of interviews. From what I was able to discover, Rosalind was a born performer, finding a knack for impersonations at an early age: "I could be anybody. I could sing like anybody. I used to imitate Billy Holiday, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughn, and I could do them right to the tee. I imitated people's little mannerisms and I think that was the beginning."*
Rosalind was also extremely aware of and concerned about the depictions of the black experience being represented on stage and screen. She was a member of the innovative Negro Ensemble Company, an award-winning troupe dedicated to exploring and performing material that focused on honest portrayals of black life. She struggled with the roles being offered to her, flat out rejecting anything that indicated stereotypes. This defiance often led to criticism, not just from producers and directors who viewed this as "difficult", but from her audience as well: "I've had people - a black woman from Brooklyn - come up to me and say, 'You know, you and Cicely Tyson just make me sick.' I said, why? She says, 'You're so picky. You don't want to be on this and you don't want to be on that. We don't care what we see you in - we want to SEE you.'"* Quite the double-edged sword. Despite these conditions, Rosalind assembled an impressive and wide-ranging list of credits. She appeared in almost every television show known to man - from "Mary Tyler Moore" to "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" - playing strong characters, including doctors, academics, judges and members of law enforcement. My awareness of her began when I first saw The Omega Man (1971). I was instantly mesmerized by her wide, beautiful face and strength. I always think of the scene where Charlton Heston first glimpses Lisa in the department store posing as a mannequin. I wish the whole movie had been about her instead! Can we please have a "last WOMAN on earth" story? I also enjoyed Rosalind's bit as the jealous snake woman in From a Whisper to a Scream (1987) and her last film role as the mysterious doctor in Tales from the Hood (1995). One role of hers that I have yet to see, and one I'm incredibly curious about, is her appearance in the notorious Death Spa (1989)! This particular title really stands out from the rest so I can't imagine what attracted her to it!
Regardless of whatever the role, Rosalind brought indelible warmth, grace and power to the screen. A presence that is truly missed.

31 days of Halloweeners!
Open House (1987)
An 80s slasher that I have not seen before, I am shocked. And it was a lot of fun. I would put it there with Deathspa and Aerobicide. Rich yuppie Americans are getting killed and the theme is they get killed at the time they are about to buy a brand new swanky house. It’s not a haunted house as its happening at prime real estate locations all over the area. As this is happening a radio therapist is getting creepy calls connected to the murders and is starting to lose his cool.
Adrienne Barbeau plays a real estate agent who is dating the radio talk show therapist so maybe they are connected to these murders than they know.
What is super odd of this movie is the kill scenes. They are as insane , gory and cheesy as the more schlocky horror films in my collection. A creepy giggling killer that uses some weird weapons and whose face we don't see but his gross dirty fingers we do see.
However the scenes that are about the therapists, the investigating cops and connecting characters are all played straight and oddly dry. Shot and performed with the same mix of seriousness and light hearted at the same time that looks a lot like many prime time tv shows of the time. Shows like say Magnum PI or Knight Rider. Very PG and simple relatable. Until we meet the red herring characters. The characters they hope you will feel is the killer. These characters are outlandish and so unrelatable that they obviously can not be the killer. Like the random callers that tell the radio therapist how they feel about the murders or the evil realestate man thats being a jerk to all the other ones. His scenes look like something out of a Troma Comedy. Very odd. Regardless to these dumb character and kind of boring serious scenes stick around for the killing scenes that I swear were filmed for a different movie.
When I first heard of this film eons ago I mixed this up with the shot on video cheese magic known as Boarding House . So I was expecting a very cheap exploitative slasher. Which I got but not looking This is shot very mainstream american professional but it is very schizophrenic. I am going to bet it was a real bitch in the editing room for this nonsense. Is it a mainstream thriller or a freakin’ nasty slasher that wants to flash around some misogyny and other shock tactics. I am not surprised this is a forgotten slasher but in the world where Silent Madness, Blood Rage, The Mutilator or Slaughterhouse exist in my collection this fits in just right.

TAKE WHAT YOU ARE IMPLYING ABOUT CONAIR BACK THIS INSTANT
Nah I’ve been mostly taking from the wikipedia article of ‘movies that are considered the worst’ plus my own adventures in terrible movies.
So other named Watchers so far: Glitter, Sleepawaycamp, Moviefortythree, Things, and Deathspa
I don’t THINK conair qualifies as quite bad enough but maybe my increasing need to force homestuck refs will make me throw one in there
