Trump energy pick misinterprets studies to support claims, scientists say. (Washington Post)
Excerpt from this story from the Washington Post:
Oil executive Chris Wright, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Energy Department, accepts that burning fossil fuel is warming the planet, but he departs from the mainstream over the consequences, contending that there is no climate crisis.
Wright cites scientific studies to argue that global warming “alarmists,” as he calls the majority of climate scientists, have it all wrong. He rattles off data to support his contention that a warmer Earth has reduced deaths from cold weather. And he points to published research to assert that hurricanes and other major storms are not growing in intensity, despite observations by meteorologists.
The references to scientific research make his arguments seem more compelling, but the authors of those studies told The Washington Post in interviews that Wright has misrepresented their work.
“What he is saying is flat-out wrong,” said Jim Kossin, a climate and atmospheric scientist who was an author of a section of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report about dangerous weather that Wright cited in a recent video on LinkedIn. Other researchers accused Wright of cherry-picking bits of data to support his thesis while ignoring abundant evidence of climate dangers.
Their complaints are important because Wright would have deep influence on U.S. climate policy if confirmed. The Energy Department sets regulations for the fossil fuel industry, drives research into energy technologies and guides the future of electric power distribution. As energy secretary, he would be in a key position to carry out Trump’s vision for rolling back clean-energy subsidies.
Wright’s provocative views and decades in the fracking industry as chief executive of Denver-based Liberty Energy are bound to get a close examination during Senate nomination hearings. Wright, through his company, declined to comment and referred questions to the Trump transition team, which said Wright “intends to deliver on President Trump’s pledge to unleash American energy production from all sources.”

Thinking about traveling somewhere this spring, maybe even to Europe. Spain seems so romantic, the dry hills and sleepy afternoons, or Italy, which almost seems too obvious a choice, with the art and history and everything. I have a friend who's managed to travel all over with very modest means, and I thought: very little of interest has happened in my life, and it's really been a matter of personal choice and timidity. So maybe it's about time.
I lost all my pictures from my California trip from two falls ago, but my girlfriend sent me this picture, flying over the Sierra Nevada:
Tumblr media
A year before that was my trip to Florida with my family. Florida (and California) was very beautiful, and two moments in particular often return, that (forgive the prose) I hold in my palm like two little gems: one, a quiet morning in late April, the sunlight falling so dazzlingly through the leaves, alone except for the small lizards and an ibis, a bird that seemed to me to step out of myth onto the board walk in front of me. And another: we'd rented jet-skis and taken them out into the Gulf. They're so loud and brash, jet-skis, fun for sure -- but after a while we all slowed to a stop, and it was silent so far out, the condos and hotels distant on the white sand and the still waters stretching on endlessly. I hopped off to float for a while. It was a peaceful feeling, kind of uncertain and undefined but still peaceful. Those are just the kind of innocuous little things that stick with me.
When I was little, and my grandmother was still alive, we'd take summer vacations out in Montauk, at the easternmost tip of my Long Island. It was usually just us kids, my mother and hers, for a few days in the summer. We had so much fun, though it was essentially the same beach we had at home. I can remember bonfires on the beach at night, and misty days when the sand, sky and roaring waves all blended together in the same white. Gram seemed to always be smiling, always singing some little song she'd made up, just to share some of her joy. She had a favorite store in town, a little cramped knick-knacks and odds-and-ends type place; we'd walk the few blocks from the hotel and she'd sing, "A Lit-tle Bit of Ev-'ry-thing!"
She always loved to shop. She never drove, so she'd take the bus down to the mall where she could spend all day. Maybe she liked the faux-urban environment of a shopping mall out in suburbia. She was a city girl at heart and was resistant when my grandfather decided to white-flight out of Brooklyn to the middle of nowhere -- "the sticks" as she called it. On weekends, they'd drive out from the city to see their new house being built, a cookie-cutter American split level with barely enough room to fit their five kids and mother-in-law. My mother, number six, was the only sibling born outside of Brooklyn, a fact she resents.
My grandmother died when I was seven, some 16 years before her husband. He grieved for a long, long time. He loved her dearly, and he showed it. With us kids in the car, he would play his John Denver CD, and cry, and cry, and cry. He was of that type of big-strong-military man, but he was never afraid to show his love, to his wife especially. She was different. My grandfather told me, years after her death, how she was embarrassed to hold hands with him, or sit together on the couch with company around. He came from money, apparently, a well-to-do family, raised the right way. She didn't. Her father was a drunk. They met as teenagers, on the train in the 40s. Damn, what was I talking about again?

A major apartment company in Colorado is charging a Greeley family more than $4,000 in fees after their mother died in her unit, something the family feels is "unethical." This comes in the same month as the company was sued in Denver court for allegedly charging illegal fees to tenants across the state.

1891 – Ted Shawn (d.1972), originally Edwin Myers Shawn, was one of the first notable male pioneers of American modern dance. Along with creating Denishawn with former wife Ruth St Denis he was also responsible for the creation of the all-male company Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers. With his innovative ideas of masculine movement he was one of the most influential choreographers and dancers of his day. He was also the founder and creator of Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in Massachusetts.
Ted Shawn was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Originally intending to become a minister of religion, he attended the University of Denver. There he caught diphtheria, which led him to take up dance in 1910 to regain his muscle strength. Shawn's dancing was discouraged by the University, which still had a Methodist affiliation, and was the reason for his expulsion the following year.
After marrying Ruth St Denis in 1914., she and Shawn opened the first Denishawn School in Los Angeles, California, where they were able to choreograph and stage many of their famous vaudeville pieces. The school and company went on to produce such influential dancers as Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman.
Although Denishawn came to an end in 1929 due to hard times both in Shawn's and St Denis' marriage as well as the economy, Shawn's second dance group Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers (1929-1940) were soon to follow in his dancing career. The new all-male company was based out of Massachusetts near his then home of Lee. In creating this company Shawn was hoping to make America become more aware, and accept the importance and dedication of the male dancer. It was with this new company that Shawn produced some of his most controversial and highly skilled choreography to date. With works such as Ponca Indian Dance, Sinhalse Devil Dance, Maori War Haka, Hopi Indian Eagle Dance, and Dyak Spear Dances he was able to showcase performances that all stressed male body movement.

His love for the relationships created by the men in his dances soon translated into love between him and one of his company members Barton Mumaw which lasted from 1931-1948. He had another partner following Mumaw, John Christian with whom he spent his life from 1949 until his death in 1972.

1917 – William Dale Jennings (d.2000) was an American LGBT rights activist, playwright and author.
Jennings was born in Amarillo, Texas. He and his sister Charlotte Elaine (two years older) grew up in Denver, Colorado where they were both schooled in music, Elaine playing the violin and Dale (as he was known, to distinguish himself from his father) the piano. The two made many appearances on local radio and at tent revival meetings. Dale showed an early love of dance, growing into a noted prodigy before the age of twelve. Later he joined the Lester Horton dance troupe as they traveled around the United States. In his late teens he moved to Los Angeles, with aspirations of becoming a writer and theater director, for which he had trained in Colorado. He eventually launched a theater company called the Theatre Caravan, located in a now demolished building near Olympic Blvd. and Alvarado, where he also lived. During this time he wrote and produced about 60 plays.
During World War II he was stationed at Guadalcanal. During his military service, he was awarded a WWII Victory Medal, an American Campaign medal, an Asiatic- Pacific campaign medal, and a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he returned to California where he studied cinema for two years at the University of Southern California. Before the war Jennings pursued relationships with women in the custom of the time, to avoid any suspicions about his true nature. He married once, an aspiring actress at Theatre Caravan; this lasted through the war, followed by divorce.
In November 1950, Jennings accompanied his friend Bob Hull, to a meeting with Harry Hay and Chuck Rowland to discuss a prospectus that had called on the "androgynies of the world" to unite. This meeting began the first official meeting of the International Bachelors Fraternal Order for Peace and Social Dignity, which would later be renamed as the Mattachine Society. The society sought to gain acceptance through greater communication between homosexuals and heterosexuals. The group began to grow and by the summer of that year they had adopted official missions and purposes which proclaimed homosexuals to be one of the largest minorities in America.
In the spring of 1952 Jennings was arrested for allegedly soliciting a police officer in a toilet in Westlake Park, now known as MacArthur Park. The Mattachine Society decided to help contest the charges brought against Jennings. They enlisted the help of attorney George Sibley, a member of the Citizens' Council to Outlaw Entrapment.
Jennings was one of the first homosexual men to contest charges such as this one. Most homosexuals at the time pled guilty so as not to be publicly scrutinized. His decision to fight back was a pivotal point in the movement. The organization raised funds and promoted Jennings' case nationally.
The trial began June 23, 1952 and lasted ten days. Jennings confessed to being a homosexual but denied any wrongdoing. The jury voted 11-1 for acquittal on the basis of police intimidation, harassment, and entrapment of homosexuals, and the case was dismissed. The trial brought a lot of attention to the Mattachine Society, increasing awareness of the Gay Rights Movement as a whole as well as increasing the organization's membership.
While Jennings was one of the founders of the Mattachine Society, his views on how to best fight for equal rights for homosexuals differed from the organization as a whole. Harry Hay believed that "gays were a unique and especially talented group who had been a primary part of tribal societies and needed to come together and reclaim those sacred and traditional roles". Jennings believed that there essentially was no difference between a gay man and a straight man. Jennings adopted a more private role, believing that homosexuals as a group had very little in common, and wanted to fight for the right to be left alone while Hay and the rest of the Mattachine Society collectively wanted to make homosexuality visible to the public and fought for more homosexual awareness.
In 1953, Jennings and others of like mind separated from the Mattachine and created ONE, Inc.. This organization became the dominant organization in Los Angeles and with the financial assistance of Jennings' sister Elaine and her husband James Porter its magazine became, for a period of time, the voice of the gay and lesbian movement. The magazine spoke out openly and more forcefully on behalf of the rights and interests of homosexuals.
After leaving ONE in 1955, Jennings wrote and published his first novel, The Ronin, followed by The Sinking of the Sarah Diamond. Another book, The Cowboys, based on a film treatment he sold to Warner Bros., caused considerable controversy among publishers due to its glimmers of homoeroticism. The Cowboys was made into a film in 1972, starring John Wayne. While not as successful as his first book, he made enough profit from the book that allowed him to buy a ranch outside of Los Angeles. Later he moved to northern California where he decided to re-involve himself in the movement. He contacted an old friend from ONE, Don Slater, who had also separated himself from ONE and founded a new organization, HIC (Homosexual Information Center) in 1965. Jennings was very passionate about his writings, and hoped that the HIC would accept and protect his scripts and books.
He continued to write until shortly before his death on May 11, 2000 at the age of 82.

1953 – Born: British former secretary of state for Trade and Industry Peter Mandelson, Baron Mandelson. Along with Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, he is regarded as one of the main players in the rebranding of the Labour Party as "New Labour". Mandelson served as Member of Parliament for Hartlepool for twelve years (from 1992), a seat he vacated in order to become a European Commissioner (2004-2008).
In October 1998, during his first period in the Cabinet, Mandelson was the center of media attention when Matthew Parris (openly Gay former MP and then Parliamentary sketch writer of The Times of London) mentioned during a live interview that "Peter Mandelson is certainly Gay".
In 2000, Peter Mandelson publicly recognized his long term relationship with his long-time partner, Reinaldo Avila da Silva by allowing photographs of them together. His memoir, The Third Man: Life at the Heart of New Labour, was published in July 2010.
In an interview, he said:
''I would hate to think that I take a stand because I have one sexuality, or one sexual orientation. I think it's important that people should be able to get to the top of politics - or whatever profession they aspire to travel to the top of - irrespective of what they are. I think I'm actually quite a good role model for people who, without any fuss or bother, without any self-consciousness or inverse or other discrimination, (are) able to make it in politics, to make it in public life, to make it to the top places in government of our country."

1968 – Trev Broudy is an American actor and former model born in California. Broudy came to national attention when he became the victim of a violent attack in 2002, which touched off a national discussion of hate crimes, drawing comparisons to the Matthew Shepard case.
On September 1, 2002, Broudy and boyfriend Edward Ulett were attacked after embracing outside Broudy's West Hollywood, California home by three assailants, Larry Walker, Torwin Sessions and Vincent Dotson. Broudy was beaten with a baseball bat and left in a coma for 10 days. In response the West Hollywood gay community organized a candlelight vigil.
Upon his regaining consciousness, Broudy's doctors determined that he had suffered permanent brain damage and was left legally blind. Part of his skull was replaced with a metal plate.
Walker, Sessions and Dotson were initially charged with attempted robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery. Republican Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley declined to press hate crime charges, a decision that sparked outrage in the community. West Hollywood City Councilmember Sal Guarriello and his political consultants immediately launched a recall campaign against Cooley to demonstrate their disgust for Cooley's homophobia. Cooley stated that he believed the motive to be robbery, not bias, a conclusion that Broudy disagreed with. After the preliminary hearing, an additional charge of aggravated mayhem was added for each defendant.
On August 27, 2003, Walker pleaded guilty to all charges and a day later Sessions and Dotson did the same. Walker was sentenced to 13 years in prison, Dotson received a seven-year sentence and Sessions was sentenced to 21 years.
Prior to the attack, Broudy was best known for a small role in the independent film The Fluffer. After the attack he narrated the 2003 VH1 special Totally Gay! in which he countered the generally light-hearted tone of the special by describing the attack and the devastating effects on his life. Broudy has appeared in a number of guest roles in a variety of television series and has started a career as a voice actor, performing in television and radio commercials and playing Cole Yeager in Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent and Captain America in Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

His character is also the uncle of William Adama. On April 28, 2009, his role was expanded to series regular. He stated in an interview that it was later revealed to him that his character would in fact be gay, something he felt was an opportunity to explore the dynamic relationship of a gay character in a science fiction setting, as well as to explore the issue of homosexuality on a social level.
When asked whether he is gay, his stock response is not a denial, but "no comment" and he adds,
I'm very involved as much as I can be with any sort of causes in the gay community and I'm very supportive and I'll continue to be so. So far, no word of my character [ in "Grimm"] being gay but in my personal life I will continue to be a supporter.

There was never a dull moment in the Falvey household — or a quiet one, at that. Born to two eccentric musicians in Cardiff, Wales, Elijah Ray Falvey was destined to love music from his very first breath. His parents could sense it, too. Calming notes from a melody always seemed to soothe their son’s cries in a way that never replicated itself when it came to their later children, and they were pretty sure that they saw him dance before they saw him stand up on his own two feet. It made sense that one of the earliest memories that Elijah could muster, there was a pair of drumsticks in his hands, banging pots and pans in a crowded kitchen to David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’.
With all of the musical instruments lying around, it was safe to say that Elijah had experience with most of them by the time he was six years old. One that he was forbidden to touch, however, was his father’s dusty Steinway Model piano that took up space in the family’s garage. Any time that he got too curious and climbed up on the stool to see it, Rodney Falvey was rushing after him and grumbling about 'his grandfather’s prized possession’, or something like that. Although, one day, when Rodney wasn’t home and his mother was too occupied chasing after his siblings in the yard, Elijah snuck into the carport and fell in love almost instantaneously.
From that day onwards, playing that piano was all that occupied Elijah’s mind. At school, around the playground, when he was sleeping — learning how to properly play was all that consumed his entire being. After several exhausting months of begging his father to teach him, Rodney eventually gave in and bought his son a keyboard of his own to practice on. It was everything that Elijah ever could have dreamed of and more, much to everyone’s dismay who couldn’t pry him away from the damn thing. No other instrument seemed to matter to him as much as his piano did, and his parents had even wound up paying a private instructor to come to the house each week in order to help him hone his skill.
Other than music, his life was fairly average. He did averagely in academics, had an average amount of friends and ended his secondary school career on a pretty average note. His life stopped being average merely a couple of months before his eighteenth birthday when his parents sat him and his siblings down to tell them the news: they were moving to America. His parents, who normally performed their music locally at bars and events, wanted to expand their career and sign a deal with a recording company in the states. That meant that they had to take the next step and pack their quaint life in Wales away and trade it for a long plane ride to Colorado.
Just outside of Denver in Providence Peak is where the Falvey family wound up, just in time for Elijah to enroll in Providence Peak University the following school year. He mainly kept his head down and kept to himself, minding his own business as the foreign freshman that some other students would whisper about. It wasn’t until he met one particular freshman in October that he started coming out of his shell.
Harrison Morrey was what some would consider an old soul — he was incredibly mature for his age, but incredibly goofy at the same time; he had the same passion for music that Elijah did, hence how he found the other man following him around like a fly on the wall for months after they had met. Practically joined at the hip, Harrison would bug Elijah every single day to consider joining his newly formed rock band, Amethyst. Every single day until Christmas, Elijah politely declined. He was apprehensive of the idea even after he reluctantly agreed to listen in on one practice (which of course, turned into two which turned into all of them after that) purely because he had thought that he wasn’t made to be in a band. As much as he enjoyed music, he enjoyed creating it even more than performing it and the position of band member didn’t necessarily suit him very much. He was too reserved, too adamant on sticking to what he was comfortable with rather than trying something new. He couldn’t be in a band. Not in a million years. Harrison was nothing if not persistent, though. That much was a fact. He successfully managed to convince Elijah by the new year to be the last missing member that they needed to man the keyboard.
For countless hours after school, Elijah, Harrison and three other bandmates spent time experimenting with their style and making music that they loved. Even after all five of them graduated from the University, they still stuck together. In fact, Elijah ended up moving out of his parents’ new home in order to move in with Harrison only a few blocks away from the other band members’ apartment. They were all closer than ever, but Elijah would consider Harrison in particular his best friend so long as the other three weren’t around to hear it.
Elijah grew into his fear exponentially, realized somewhere along the way that performing music had become a passion of his and they were having fun. It reminded him of his own parents and how much joy they got from performing, and he started to think that he wouldn’t mind doing the same for the rest of his life as long as it was with them. Making music because they loved to, to put their heart and soul into their craft regardless of who was listening — that was what his dream had become, and all it took was one big break to achieve that dream.
In 2005, Amethyst had received an email from an employee at Warner Records; they wanted to meet with them and discuss a deal, from their headquarters in Los Angeles. Making the trip out there was one of the easiest decisions that they had ever made in their lives, as was officially signing on with them a handful of weeks later to record their first ever EP. The marketing that came along with working with such a large company brought with it a level of success that surpassed anything that Elijah could have ever expected. They gained popularity in what seemed like a whirlwind, when it felt like just yesterday that they were practicing in Harrison’s family’s basement. Over the course of the coming years came more music, more concerts, more fame. They got the opportunity to travel the world on tour and live the best life that they possibly could. By the summer of 2019, Amethyst had two EPs, two albums, countless singles and three whole tours under their belt.
As much as Elijah never could have expected to be in the position that he was in then, he equally never could have expected how quickly it all came crashing down.
On their way towards the venue in Los Angeles, the day of the last show on their third tour, a reckless driver had been swerving lanes on the highway when they eventually crashed directly into the band’s van. It caused a chain reaction on the road of vehicles colliding into one another until the road was merely a gigantic pile of rubble and mess. Truth be told, Elijah didn’t remember much of the crash itself — the last thing he had any vague memories of was the sound of wailing ambulances and the squeeze of someone’s hand on his arm before his mind and vision went completely blank. It was later when he came to consciousness again that he learned that he lost his best friend that day. Despite the paramedics putting forth their best efforts, the passenger sitting on the left side of the van got sandwiched between multiple vehicles and never made it out. Harrison. Harrison who insisted on going in first. His best friend, Amethyst’s front man, died that night and Elijah swore that a piece of himself died with him, along with Amethyst itself. After months of recovery — physically and emotionally — the four remaining members decided to call it quits. Without Harrison, there was no Amethyst. It wouldn’t be right to continue without him, even if they could infer that was what he would have wanted. It was too painful, the wound of losing him being brought to life each time the band even crossed their thoughts.
Elijah’s musical career was buried all the same. As was his life in Los Angeles. He was suddenly devoid of purpose, of the will to carry on doing something that he loved without the person that he loved there to witness it. Getting as far away from California, where he spent nearly half his life seemed like the best option — but with nowhere else to go, in 2020 he found himself landing in Colorado for the second time. Which didn’t prove itself to be any better, but at least he was somewhere that felt a little more like home still.

♫ — FUN FACTS . . .
Acquired two out of his four current cats shortly after he moved back home thanks to his therapist ( at the time ) suggesting that he invest in an emotional support animal. He went to the shelter and fell in love with a bonded pair of kittens, who he named Oliver & Eve. His third cat, Kemet, is technically his girlfriend's cat. His fourth is an unnamed feral orange guy who appeared around his studio one day; he's still trying to earn his trust.
Started smoking in 2001 when he was a teenager due to peer pressure from his friends. He's smoked Malboro Menthols or American Spirits consistently since then in fluctuating amounts depending on his stress levels. The highest he's ever gotten up to was two and a half packs per day, the lowest being a half pack per day. If he ever says that he's going to quit, he's definitely just fooling himself.
That being said: absolutely hates vapes. Strawberry Cereal Donut Milk? Triple Berry Ice? Strawberry Watermelon Blast? Get them all out of here. Literally what the fuck is a Geek Bar.
Is the type of guy to try just about anything at least once. Which is, coincidentally, how he found out that he hates vapes. And how he shouldn't mix hard liquor. And how he's oddly flexible . . .
Has many useless party tricks up his sleeve, such as: pen spinning, breaking apples in half, rolling coins between his fingers, and tying cherry stems with his tongue.
Found out he was ambidextrous at a very young age, but started to favor his left over time. Regardless of what hand he uses, his handwriting is pure chicken scratch. He's only known a handful of people that can confidently decipher what he's trying to write down without having to ask him what certain ink blobs on the paper say.
Will not ever commit to a favorite genre of music, despite the fact that he very obviously is partial towards rock ( classic, indie, hard, pop — he doesn't discriminate ). He will, however, say that he's not the biggest fan of heavy metal in his own roundabout way of not saying so directly.
Has become extremely annoying post-accident in the sense that he demands for people let him know via text that they've gotten to their destinations safely if he knows that they're going anywhere ( meaning: a good portion of his messages with those he cares about include variations of 'Made it okay!' and thumbs up emojis ). If he doesn't receive a notification, he gets too riddled with anxiety and starts to think that something's happened to them on the road.
Unsurprisingly favored his school's band in terms of extracurriculars as a kid, though he did fill up excess time being apart of the theatre club's stage crew.
Isn't particularly good at video games on account of not playing them much. However, he does pull skill out of his ass when it comes to rhythm games such as Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Get him in a tournament, he'll probably crush it.
Finds it extremely difficult to get up in the morning and has punched a fair amount of alarm clocks until they've stopped beeping at him. The increasing frequency in which he suffers from restless sleep these days only makes it ten times harder — thanks PTSD-induced, chronic nightmares!
Knows how to take care of his curls. His mother was very adamant on instilling a proper hair care routine when he was teenager, after she found out that he was aggressively rubbing the water off with a pool towel after every shower. His skin care still needs to catch up to speed, but a simple face soap has never steered him wrong before.
Is still cordial with Harrison's family — who, all things considered, treated him like a second son. Thinking about the accident has made it hard for him to reach out as often as he wants to, but he does make a point to stop by their cabin in Bighorn Hills at least once every six months or so. He has yet to do so on his death anniversary, which is arguably one of the most important days to let the Morrey's know that he's thinking about them, but one day he'll be able to crawl out of bed and make it there. Hopefully.
Plans to silently donate a percentage of his earnings garnered through his music studio each year to the Roadway Safety Foundation.

Background
Kate was born in Denver, Colorado during the happier times of her parent’s marriage. Though those happy times did not last very long. She didn’t know a time when her parents weren’t fighting with each other, but they doted on her often. It was honestly a bit of a relief when they divorced. Kate stayed with her mom, but often visited her father. Their home was in the Lakeridge District. Her mother didn’t finish college after she fell pregnant and had a variety of odd jobs over the years. From a waitress to a substitute teacher to a daycare worker. Alice got married several times, but again, these often didn’t last. Alice seemed to want a better life than they could give her, one she felt she couldn’t achieve on her own.
While her mother’s life was a bit more chaotic, her father’s life was much calmer. He settled down with an older woman who already had kids mostly grown. They lived a quiet, happy life and are still together. They were never very rich, but Kate never felt like she was lacking for anything. Both sides of her family connected her to her Chinese-Indonesian culture, especially her mom given her status as a first generation American in her family. Her grandparents being close by helped as well and she appreciates where she comes from, though she does not speak much Indonesian. However she does often cook foods she learned from her family.
Growing up, Kate was one of those people everyone liked. Her kind nature and genuine attitude towards people drew them to her. Ask around people she graduated with and they would say she was always nice. Most didn’t know her that well, but they at least had a kind word to say about her. She was encouraged by friends to join the cheerleading team freshman year, which is how she met her first love. He was on the football team, though he was often on the bench those first few years. But during the first game when she was cheering and he was sitting on the bench, they chatted a bit and they ended up agreeing to a first date. From there, they were inseparable.
TW: Teen Pregnancy
They were the It Couple, the ones everyone talked about being together forever. You often didn’t see one without the other. As they got older, he became a football star and soon they were the ones winning homecoming king and queen, prom king and queen, all the things. They had all their firsts together and talked often about the future together. But reality quickly shifted when Kate fell pregnant just before graduation. She was terrified and wasn’t sure what to do, as well as being afraid of her family’s reaction and his. At first when she told her boyfriend, he was freaked out, but agreed to be there for her. They tried to tell their families together, but his family had always disapproved of her. They had never really accepted her and had hoped for better things for their son. He had gotten a major scholarship for football to a school out of state and wanted him to go there. They wanted Kate to get rid of the baby. Due to pressure from his family and them getting in his head, he told Kate he wasn’t ready to be a father, that he needed to go away to college and pursue his dreams. It broke her heart and they ended things.
He left and never came back, while Kate changed her plans, living with her mother and attending the University of Denver. While her mother wasn’t happy about her pregnancy, she still supported her daughter. She managed to attend some summer classes and most of the first semester so that she could take off the second semester and take care of her child. Her son was born in December and from the moment she laid eyes on him, Eric was everything to her. Since his father wanted nothing to do with him and neither did his paternal grandparents, she never told them about the baby or anything. Occasionally she saw them around town, but they never once asked about their grandchild. Kate’s parents were a huge help when it came to raising her son. They would take turns watching him while she attended university and worked. Her grandparents often came to help with him as well. And while it took a bit longer than normal, she managed to graduate university and become a teacher.
She loved children and was always good with them, so being a teacher had been her plan for years, especially thanks to her father’s influence with his own teaching career. She began teaching the first grade and absolutely loved it. Outside of her work, she fully devoted herself to her son. He was her entire life. She didn’t really date or even attempt to do anything without him. And while they struggled, they were happy together. Until Eric turned six years old and became very sick. He began having trouble eating, growing thinner and thinner, and unable to keep food down. At first, Kate thought it might be some sort of stomach bug, an ulcer, anything other than what it turned out to be.
TW: cancer, pediatric cancer, child death
After many doctor’s visits, Eric was diagnosed with pancreatoblastoma, a rare pancreatic cancer. He had tumors in his pancreas that had been growing for quite some time slowly. They began treatment quickly, starting with surgery in attempts to remove the tumors. During surgery, they found they were unable to remove some of the tumor, so he began chemotherapy. It was a long battle for two years with many ups and downs, but eventually, Eric just became too weak and the cancer too strong. He passed away at the age of eight, devastating his mother. It broke Kate to lose her son, the most important person to her. It was like she lost her entire life when he was gone.
TW: depression, suicide, grief
She fell into a deep depression after her son died, all of it crashing down on her. She took a sabbatical from work and was barely able to leave her bed or home for almost a year. Her friends and family were worried for her, especially after one found her ready to end her life to be with her son. They encouraged her to attend grief counseling and she did. It took a long time for her to get to a place where she could get out of bed, that she could be a normal person again. The pain was with her always, but she could manage it. She came back to teaching eventually, her coworkers welcoming her with open arms. At first it was hard being around the kids, realizing her own son would never reach their age, would never grow older.
Over the years, she has managed to put herself back together. She is a great teacher and still has kids coming up to her to this day, saying she was their favorite teacher. In her social life, she very much keeps to herself, still never having really been with or dated anyone since her first love. She attempted a few dates, but they never worked out.
Personality:
Kate is a very kind and empathetic person. However, she is also very shy and quiet at times. People would describe her as the girl-next-door, the one everyone likes and gets along with. After everything happened with her ex, she became more independent, more hard working to provide for her son. Once he passed away, she became even more reserved, keeping to herself more often. In recent years, she has thrown herself into all sorts of things to avoid feeling lonely and depressed. She volunteers at the theater, doing all sorts of odd jobs for Felipe, including using her old piano skills whenever needed. She is always coming up with fun things for her class, trying out new hobbies, and participating in every sort of city event she possibly could. During the summers when she isn’t teaching, she often even volunteers with the daycare center or library with children’s programs.

Theodore Edward Coneys, The Denver Spiderman
The victim’s name was Philip Peters. For the five weeks leading up to his murder he had been staying in his house alone because Helen, his wife, was recovering at St. Anthony’s Hospital after breaking her hip in a fall.
On the night of October 17, 1941, Peters discovered a tall, gaunt, and dishevelled man raiding his icebox. A fight ensued, and the interloper grabbed Peters’s cast iron stove shaker and beat him to death with it before fleeing. Peters was discovered an hour later by his worried neighbors, and the Denver Police were called. They searched the house, but couldn’t find any evidence of the murderer. It was as if he had vanished into thin air. While detectives dug into Peters’s past, searching for enemies who hated him enough to want him dead, Mrs. Peters was eventually released from the hospital and returned home a widow. A good friend of hers moved in to help around the house. In the months following Mrs. Peters’s return, she and her friend reported strange things happening around the West Moncrieff Place house: food missing, strange sounds, things out of place. The friend was convinced the house was haunted and resigned, while Mrs. Peters decided to relocate to Grand Junction to live with her son.
So the house stood vacant, and the strange sounds and disgusting smells continued to be reported to the police, but they couldn’t find anyone in the house. Everything changed in July 1942 once Denver Police decided to station two detectives, Roy Bloxom and Bill Jackson, outside the house and keep it under surveillance instead of waiting for a call from the neighbors. The vigilance paid off when Bloxom and Jackson spotted a man inside the house. They ran inside, but the house was empt y.Until they heard a noise upstairs. They opened a closet door just in time to spot a pair of legs disappearing up into a small opening to the house’s attic. They grabbed the legs and pulled the man attached to them back to the ground. They had caught their man. The suspect was arrested and taken downtown, where he confessed to his crime and told his story.
Theodore Coneys, AKA "The Denver Spider Man", after his arrest in 1942Theodore Coneys was born in Illinois in the 1880s, but came to Denver in the 1910s, where he remained. As a child he had poor health, which continued to plague him into adulthood. Because of his health and perhaps also because of the Great Depression, Coneys struggled to keep a job long-term, and frequently found himself without a place to live except for doorways and alleys around Denver. At some point, Peters and Coneys had become acquainted at the Denver Guitar Club, so one evening Coneys went to the Peters’ house hoping to be able to ask them for some money and maybe something to eat. Unfortunately, this was when Helen was at the hospital and Peters was keeping her company, so no one was home. Coneys decided to break into the house to steal food. A few days later, he tried to do it again but this was when he was found by Peters.
Coneys insisted to police that beating Peters had been a split-second decision. After he had killed Peters, Coneys sought refuge up in the attic, where he stayed until July. Denver Police sent their smallest officer up into the cramped attic where Coneys had made himself a nest of sorts. He had collected his waste and had not bathed during his attic residency, and the stench ended up making the officer vomit. After recovering from losing his lunch, Officer Fred Zarnow said of the attic, “A man would have to be a spider to stand it long up there.” The newspapers heard this, and ran with it. Theodore Coneys was dubbed “The Denver Spider Man,” and a legend was born. Coneys was charged and convicted of murder by a jury and sentenced to life in prison in October of 1942. He was sent to the state penitentiary in Cañon City, and remained there until his death on May 16, 1967 at the age of 84.

Set during World War II, Olivia "Livy" Dunne is a young Denver minister's daughter who has become pregnant by a United States Navy flight instructor on furlough. Embarrassed by his daughter's out of wedlock pregnancy, her father quietly arranges for her to marry.
Livy is sent to a rural southeastern Colorado town to marry Ray Singleton, who operates his family farm. Hearing of Livy's dilemma from his pastor, Ray is moved and agrees to marry without even having met her. Unbeknownst to Livy, he has lost both of his parents, and also his younger brother, during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Though young, handsome and a family man at heart, Ray has little opportunity to find a wife in this remote region. His sister Martha, her husband and their three children are the only family he has left.
Ray and Livy are very different. Livy has a good education and until recently was studying archeology in graduate school. She knows nothing of cooking or farming and is not particularly religious. Livy has felt bereft and lonely since her mom's death. Ray is a man of few words. A hard worker, he is kind, honest and patient. Family life and faith in God have been the central features of Ray's life. His daily activity is focused on working his family's farm.[3] Livy and Ray strive hard to be polite and courteous to each other, but are nevertheless awkward in each other's company.
Though agreeing to marry for her father, Livy never intended to remain. She secretly writes to United States Navy Flight Instructor Lieutenant Edward Brown, her baby's father. A visit by her sister brings sharp contrast between the life Livy came from and the life she is living now, but it is also apparent how much Livy has changed her view of her surroundings. Her sister has no news of Lt. Brown, who has yet to answer Livy's letters.

Thalia Clark - 40 years old - yoga teacher & brand ambassador
biography
(this is long and I cannot write a realistic muse for the life of me, like I also can't believe I wrote this much)
trigger warnings - death, final girl trope, adoption
Her childhood was picturesque. A standard nuclear family in the fast growing Denver with a younger brother and parents who hated to sleep away from each other. Thalia was a happy but slightly odd kid with an early fascination with computers. Her father worked at one of the early computer companies in the 80s. Her life fell apart when her family was killed in a home invasion. Her hiding spot was on the roof where her mom used to take her up to stargaze. She went into the foster system for only a year.
Thalia was adopted into the Clark family when she was eight. She was sure it was just luck. Her adopted sister, Kathleen, was already in college but still stepped up to be a great older sister due to their parents already busy lives. Kathleen's friends called Thalia 'Wednesday' due to her ghoulish nature for the first few years of her life with the Clarks.
She lived as free a life as a kid could live. After her traumatic beginnings, homeschooling was the best option for her. Thalia was very smart and preferred her own company (or Kathleen's) for many years. The sisters became extremely close even when Thalia shifted to attend Providence Peak High School. She coasted between the science club and student council. Shifting from Wednesday Addams to Elle Woods was a shock to her family but the morbidity remained just under the surface.
Once she graduated high school, Thalia moved to California to follow in her dad's footsteps. She was dropped out of university pretty quickly after being recruited by a soon to be well known company: Apple. She was one of the leads on developing the first ipods. Thalia made a number of very clever investing decisions and soon made enough money to just live off her ever-growing savings. Then Kathleen called from New York after a bad day and Thalia moved her life to the East Coast.
Shifting into the socialite lifestyle was exhausting and Thalia found her niche in one of the newly growing exercise communities. New neighbors owned a pilates and yoga studio that she started working at more as a way to pass time. Her life in New York was easy if not predictable: teaching or personal training, attending events as a socialite, and spending as much time with Kathleen as possible. Then she fell in love and here world turned upside down.
Despite her sister strongly advising against it, she married Saul Weissberg and her life started revolving around him. How could it not? He was charismatic and attractive, intelligent enough to verbally spar with her, and he made her comfortable enough to drop the constantly preppy act. At first the electric chemistry and constant social outings was all she needed but Thalia soon grew unhappy. She was losing who she was and was unhappy at just being 'Mrs. Weissberg' (especially when she refused to give up the name of the family that was so kind to her).
With Kathleen back and thriving in Providence Peak, Thalia started reevaluating things. She had a very successful fitness brand and more investments than she knew what to do with. After enough pestering, Saul agreed to move back to Colorado to try to start his own firm. Unsurprisingly, their problems persisted and they ultimately separated. Thalia only permitted Kathleen an 'I told you so' referencing the ironclad pre-nup. Thalia took her belongings and bought a townhouse downtown.
She works at the Humming Bee teaching yoga and pilates at her leisure. Thalia doesn't do much day-to-day work with her brand. Instead she helps her sister at the university and tries to avoid her ex-husband who she still has very confusing feelings for.
Headcannons
She’s very anti-horror. Despite her gothic beginnings and general disposition of storm clouds, she hates watching or consuming any type of horror because it affects those parts of her she tries to keep buried
She has the weirdest luck. It’s not uncommon for her to win a pool game in a single turn then lose the next three. She’s very graceful and elegant in almost all of her movements but she’ll trip at any given moment if there’s even a pebble in her way
She very rarely expresses emotions on her face. After what happened with her family, Thalia retreated into herself. Even after growing up, only a few people could read her micro-expressions
Her eyes are very photosensitive and she rarely goes outside without sunglasses
She forgets to eat frequently. After her divorce, the reminder duty usually falls to Kathleen or her colleagues at the Humming Bee
Connections
friends: whether it's through yoga or around and about, Thalia could use some
friends with benefits/casual dating: she does still have significant feelings for her ex-husband so it would be fun and messy

if you’re hearing BLACK SMOKE by ANN SOPHIE playing, you have to know ANASTACIA "NASH" MENDOZA (THEY/THEM; NONBINARY) is near by! the 47 year old BOUNCER AT AMBROSIA LOUNGE has been in denver for, like, 5 MONTHS. they’re known to be quite SECRETIVE, but being PROTECTIVE seems to balance that out. or maybe it’s the fact that they resemble SARA RAMIREZ. personally, i’d love to know more about them seeing as how they’ve got those WORN OUT LEATHER JACKETS, LATE NIGHT SMOKES AND MUSIC PUMPING FROM THE SPEAKERS AT ANY HOUR vibes. and maybe i’ll get my chance if i hang out around the DOWNTOWN DISTRICT long enough!
tw: lowkey death mention right at the end
Anastacia (mostly known as Nash) Mendoza is the youngest sibling of two and Felipe's titi (gender neutral word for aunt/uncle in spanish) but has very little contact with their family, dipping in and out of their lives and mainly shows themselves during important occasions. They got branded as the black sheep of the family early on, refusing to conform to a lifestyle fitted for their class. They were more so the type to stay out until early hours, hammer away on their current car or even sneak away for days at a time doing who knows what.
They moved out at the age of 17 with their then girlfriend, both settling in a loft apartment while they tried to keep themselves afloat. It was the best 3 years of Nash's life thus far, finally getting a proper taste of freedom - but it wasn't to last as the couple found themselves wanting different things in life and thus parted ways. Nash proceeded to get themselves a bigger apartment to dull the pain and dated around for a while, but no partner lasted longer than a year.
It wasn't until they crossed paths with a most stunning woman named Yazmin Elsayed that they turned around their life for real, smitten from the start and unwilling to give up until they had the other person on a date. There were a few years between them, after all, but it didn't seem Yazmin minded too much and not before long they both found themselves dating. It turned into one of Nash's more fulfilling relationships to date, the two feeling quite in tune to the point of moving in together and being comfortable enough to imagine their future with one another. However, things were to take a turn for the worst and both of their flaws were to become their downfall.
Two friends of Nash reached out one day to fill them in a business idea they had been cooking up for the past year or so, wondering if they would be willing to help finance the project for a stake in the company - and being slightly on the impulsive side of things, Nash found themselves unable to say no. They chose not to let Yazmin in on the investment, wanting it to be a surprise once money came rolling in - and it surely seemed to be heading in the right direction, until one of the two friends suddenly bailed with the funds. Nash and the second one stood there empty-handed, unable to do much besides file a police report for the money but no matter how long they waited they saw no return and the bank was suddenly on their tails, wanting to see some payments made back to them.
The stress, anxiety and sleepless nights began to take a toll on Nash, finding it ever so hard to tell Yazmin of what had happened and that they were sitting in the red money-wise. They slowly moved away from their chirpy self, being snappy and cold and it didn't help that Yazmin was too busy with work to properly notice that something was going on - often tired herself from work. Nash began to sneak money out of their shared joint accounts to pay off their debts and even tried to embezzle some money from their current work place, which didn't go unnoticed and eventually got them fired. Eventually Yazmin found out and the two were thrown into a fight of a lifetime, one that shook them to the core and caused them to crack in every corner. Nash felt like Yazmin was neglecting their relationship and Yazmin was hurt by Nash's lack of trust in her - thus they broke up.
Nash decided to move away from Denver in the hopes of getting away from, well, everything and managed to a slight degree. A new job, some new flings... but the debt kept looming over them like a dark cloud. Then, a mere decade later their sister came them a brief call to let them know their father was on his death bed, not wanting them to miss the chance to say goodbye. Nash decided to take the opportunity to return back home, figuring that plenty time had passed and there was little chance of them bumping into their past at this point. Today they work as a bouncer at Ambrosia Lounge and doing their best to simply move forward.

POPPIN MORE BOTTLES TONIGHT
"James G. Watt, who as President Ronald Reagan’s first Interior secretary tilted environmental policies sharply toward commercial exploitation, touching off a national debate over the development or preservation of America’s public lands and resources, died on May 27 in Arizona. He was 85.
His son, Eric Watt, confirmed his death in a text message but declined to cite a cause.
After taking office in 1981, Mr. Watt was asked at a hearing of the House Interior Committee if he favored preserving wilderness areas for future generations. He had been picked by Reagan from a Denver legal foundation that had often challenged the rules and policies of the department he now headed. Critics called him a fox in the hen house.
Mr. Watt’s response startled some committee members, but seemed to explain his intention to ease restrictions on the use of millions of acres of public lands. “I do not know how many future generations we can count on before the Lord returns,” he said.
The remark was revealing. Mr. Watt, a born-again Christian and a lifelong Republican, saw himself as a servant of God and prayed with colleagues at work. But it raised questions over whether he would be motivated by conservative political judgments or religious convictions, or both.
It also hinted at a side of Mr. Watt that was not apparent at first: a verbal propensity to shoot himself in the foot. In unguarded moments over a 33-month tenure, he suggested that liberals were un-American and that the popular Beach Boys rock band was unwholesome. He likened his critics to Nazis and Bolsheviks, and insulted Black people, women, Jews and handicapped people.
In one of his first official pronouncements, Mr. Watt declared that Interior Department policies over years had swung too far toward conservation under the influence of “environmental extremists,” and away from the development of public resources that he said was needed for economic growth and national security.
He soon transferred control of many of the resources to private industry, restoring what he regarded as a proper balance to the nation’s patrimony. He opened most of the Outer Continental Shelf — nearly all of America’s coastal waters — to drilling leases by oil and gas companies. He widened access to coal on federal lands, and eased restrictions on strip-mining, which scarred landscapes and was cheaper than cutting deep mine shafts.
He increased industry access to wilderness areas for drilling, mineral mining and lumbering; gave private owners of hotels, restaurants and shops wider rights in national parks; curtailed the program to protect endangered species; cut funds to acquire land for national and state parks; and added money to build roads, bridges, hotels and other man-made structures in the parks."

Okay I’ve done some minor development for Tristan.
He was born in midwinter to a farming couple. The harvest had been poor that year, but with Tristan’s arrival the harvests became abundant. He was the apple of his parents eyes, the love of their life, and he grew up surrounded by that love. It wasn’t perfect and they didn’t have a lot, but what they did have was blessed.
By the time he was twenty five, they had both died. His mother caught the flu and it spread to her lungs. His father was killed by an unbroken stallion a neighbour was trying to tame. Tristan took over the family’s small farm and marvelled at how it continued to thrive.
He wasn’t a lonely man in the years after his parents deaths. There were a handful of people working on the land, the folks in town a few miles away were friendly, and he never lacked for company if he desired it. He took lovers at times, only a small number, and he briefly considered marrying a girl from town who later fell in love with a gentleman from Denver. They have two kids and are madly in love years later.
Plenty of cattle drives pass through the area each year, and that’s how he met Jonah. He literally bumped into the man. Jonah had sad, wide blue eyes and the physicality of someone who was used to being overwhelmed and overlooked all at once. Tristan fell in love immediately. It was the most cliché thing to ever happen to him: his heart beat hard in his chest, his palms got sweaty, and he had to make the excuse of replacing a dented tin of peaches to collect himself. He bought Jonah chocolate and kicked himself for not finding out more about him.

if you’re hearing END OF BEGINNING by DJO playing, you have to know OLIVER HUNT (HE/THEY; NONBINARY) is near by! the TWENTY EIGHT year old SUNSET SOUNDS EMPLOYEE  has been in denver for, like, 3 MONTHS. they’re known to be quite IMPULSIVE but being GENUINE seems to balance that out. or maybe it’s the fact that they resemble AVAN JOGIA. personally, i’d love to know more about them seeing as how they’ve got those CAR HEADLIGHTS ON A RAINY DAY, A DARK AREA IN THE WOODS, THE SOUND OF THUNDER vibes. and maybe i’ll get my chance if i hang out around the LAKERIDGE long enough!
drug, death & addiction tw !
THE BASICS:
full name: oliver xavier hunt  birthdate, zodiac sign: october 31st / scorpio sexuality: gay occupation: employee at sunset sounds
THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS:
being born on october 31st should have been some bad omen to oliver. and it was, it definitely was, but it wasn’t until much later in life that he realized what that truly meant for them. he grew up in denver, at least for the first year of his life. maybe it was less than a year, he was a baby he doesn’t remember alright? but during that time, it was just him and his mom. unfortunately for them, his dad died before his mom gave birth. it sucked, but his mom was a good mom and dad, so he felt like he didn’t really need a dad around.
once they moved from denver, they bounced from place to place. his mom also seemed to find a new boyfriend in every place they moved to. some were okay, tried to do the whole dad thing but most of them were pretty awful. one thing that oliver noticed was that their mom always knew how to pick ‘em. but he and his mom always managed to dust themselves off from the rubble and move on to the next thing. despite the turmoil, his mom happened to have a fairly decent job so they never went without. it was just clear to him, even from a young age, that his mom was looking for love. looking for someone to love her, to have a family that she so desperately wanted. he wouldn’t truly understand what exactly that felt like until he was older, and the moment he realized it was gut wrenching.
oliver only had his mom for family growing up. she would say that her parents had passed and that she was an only child. and he believed her, because why would she lie about something like that? she was adopted, she had a great life and it ended a bit tragically for her parents. just like his own dad. he was just grateful to still have his mother.
after years of moving, they finally settled down in chicago when oliver was 17. he didn’t mind moving around so much, didn’t have to worry about building roots in places. he knew high school didn’t matter, he could make friends anywhere he went. he was pretty social, people tended to get along with him. once they settled in chicago, things were great! he graduated high school and had a pretty solid group of friends as well. he got into a good college that was still close to his mom but gave him the freedom of going to college in general.
that was the plan, at least. until the summer before he was set to go to college and he learned his mom had gotten sick. and that it was bad. he learned that his mom had a year to live, maybe less. and oliver did the only thing he could think of doing, he dropped out of college and stayed at home to take care of his mom. he got a part time job just so that he could make sure things were still okay for them, but his mom made it fairly easy to where he didn’t need to work very often, all thanks to her company who was very willing to work with them. june turned into july which then turned to august and september and his mom started to get better! there seemed like there was a light at the end of this tunnel.
but then came october, and his mom took a turn for the worse. an on her deathbed turn for the worse. oliver stayed at her bedside through it all, up until her very last breath. leading up to that last breath came the reveal that would rock his entire life. she told him that her dad wasn’t dead, in fact he was doing very well in denver. where his mom took them from when they were younger. that he had a family his mom didn’t know about when they were together, that he had fallen in love with him (she fell in love with any guy she met), and that she didn’t want him to grow up with what she had. with parents who didn’t want anything to do with you, so lying about his dad was the next best thing she could give to her son.
his mom passed away in her sleep that night, peacefully. but her death was anything but peaceful for oliver. he was mad, he was angry, he was devastated and angry at the world. how could they take his mom away from him? how could he have a dad that didn’t want him? when his mom passed, she left him with two things: unanswered questions and a bunch of money. he never got the questions answered, but he did end up using that money. he got in with the wrong crowd of people and was introduced to drugs. multiple kinds of drugs, he wasn’t picky. and he was a generous person when it came to drugs, he was a share the wealth type person. and in his haze, he would often search up his half sister named norah, who got to live a life with their father. who seemed to be normal, more normal than he could ever be. he was envious of her and the life she lived.
it took him months to get the courage to reach out to her on social media, but when he did she seemed open to meeting him. that was unexpected but it was great! he definitely wasn’t complaining. but their first meeting was pretty rocky, oliver was still using (though, trying to stop) but it definitely hindered the experience. still, they would keep in contact over the years and meet up, but a lot of the times it would end the same way their first meeting had gone.
his life truly seemed to change when he met gio, someone he met at a party or through mutual friends he forgets. probably both. but from the moment he saw gio he fell in love because just like his mom, when he fell in love he fell hard. but since they traveled in the same circles, they also had the same demons. so things weren’t easy, but they made it work for a year and a half. they got engaged! sure, they were both very high when it happened but gio got him a ring from the pawn shop so that made it official. oliver got gio a soda can tab that nearly sliced his finger off when they tried to put it on. that was the same thing right?
something switched in oliver one day and he decided that they both needed to get clean. they watched people suffer all around them for too long and he didn’t want to lose gio to something like that. or even worse, he didn’t want gio to have to watch him end up like that. while oliver had been slowly getting clean, it was clear that gio didn’t want to get clean with him. but oliver wanted them to live a happy life together and why couldn’t gio get that? so when his fiance wasn’t home yet one day, oliver flushed the pills down the drain. every last one, in the name of helping gio. but the other didn’t like that, a fight broke out and gio was gone the next day.
all the work that he had put in went down the drain just like the pills the night before. he fell right back into old habits and into even worse crowds of people. but he couldn’t help it, he didn’t have gio anymore so what was the point? until he spoke with norah, who the last time they had spoke, thought he was happy with a fiance. but he wasn’t and the conversation with his sister made him remember why he wanted to get clean. they made an agreement that he would get clean before coming to denver but he would live with her. he thought that was a pretty good deal.
now he’s been back in denver for 3 months, clean and ready to start his new life. or the life he should have lived if his mom never had to move them out of denver. but little did he know, that his family drama was not the only unfinished business he was going to have to deal with in denver.

1. Are you named after anyone? My middle name is in reference to Arthurian legend of Arthur’s sister.  My mother loved it since our last name is Pendragon, also from Arthurian legend.
2. When was the last time you cried?  Two days ago when I awoke from a dream of Dreya’s death.  Again. *wraps her arms around herself as if in a hug*

4. Do you use sarcasm? There are people who don’t?  How do they live?
5. What's the first thing you notice about people?  Their eyes.  You can tell a lot about people by how expressive their eyes are.
6. What's your eye color? Hazel, leaning green
7. Scary movies or happy endings?  Disney
8. Any special talents? I’m a trained sniper, and I’m very good at it.  I have designed my own weaponry and it is far superior to anything you can buy off the shelf.  My company is sought after by governments and covert groups alike.  If you can afford me, you know anything I’ve designed is worth the money.
9. Where were you born? Denver, Colorado
10. What are your hobbies?  Target shooting, gaming, explosives, weapons design, covert tech design
11. Have you any pets?  I’m hoping to be able to bring Dreya’s dog to Imperium.  I need to talk to Abriella

14. Favorite subject in school? Math
15. Dream job? I was doing my dream job before what happened to Dreya.  I love designing weaponry and other tech while working with her on artifact hunting.  We were a team. Coming up with new tech to help us on our hunts.  Specializing and adapting tech to make things we did easier, which meant that it also would work for my clients. It wasn’t a job, it was my passion and my love.

if you’re hearing Waves by Dean Lewis playing, you have to know CARELIGHA ORTIZ (she/her; ciswoman) is near by! the THIRTY THREE year old librarian/IT Consultant has been in denver for, like, THIRTY ONE YEARS. they’re known to be quite ESCAPIST, but being COMPASSIONATE seems to balance that out. or maybe it’s the fact that they resemble AIMEE CARRERO. personally, i’d love to know more about them seeing as how they’ve got those FLORAL DRESSES AND CONVERSE, BOOKS READ IN A COZY CHAIR, COOKIE TINS WITH A SMILE vibes. and maybe i’ll get my chance if i hang out around the MONTEBELLO DISTRICT long enough!
TW: death, health issues, heart issues
Carleigha was born premature, the trauma of the birth taking her mother and causing her grief stricken father to leave. She was taken in by her aunt and uncle and along with their son they made her right at home in their family. Unfortunately that’s not where her health troubles ended. Diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Defect and a dodgy immune system, Carly spent much of her youth in and out of the hospital.
Growing up she was rather sheltered, sometimes having to spend her time on the Children’s ward. Her one solace and escape were books and code. Nudged by her parents she fell in love with all types of books, but mostly murder mysteries. In her free time, she found an affinity for code, and even picked up a few hacking skills. Though the families don’t know, many of her hacks growing up were to pay for the medical bills of those on the ward like herself.
After open heart surgery fixed her damaged heart, Carly found herself experiencing the world. Following High School she went travelling, first visiting family in Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic before moving on to other parts of the world. She found her hacking skills served to supplement her income, though that’s a part of her life you’ll rarely hear her talk about.
Eventually she made her way back to Denver and seeking something familiar she went to school for library sciences (minoring in IT) and soon became a librarian, holding story time for the kids and murder mystery nights for the adults. She’s all smiles and sunshine for the most part, prone to provide her friends and patrons with cookies and other baked goods but she hasn’t quite left that White Hat hacker persona behind.
Though she spends most of her time working at the library, her ole mentor did talk her into working as a consultant for his Cyber Security company. It gives her the thrill of testing out firewalls in a more legal way.
Two years ago, she collapsed at work after weeks of ignoring symptoms she didn’t want to be back. Her heart troubles had resurfaced. Though medication has kept her stable, surgery seems to be in her near future.
Connection Ideas
Hacker/IT Competition
Someone she’s previously hacked
Childhood friends/enemies
Rivals
Current Friends
Flings/FWB
