Bucky woke up alone in the house, having slept on the couch the night before, as for today, would end in another fight or Bucky understanding more about Y/n, hopefully. He got somewhat ready for the day and ate, before setting out to scour the whole compound by the time her friend got there, and definitely before Y/n got back. He started with the office opening drawers and filing cabinets, looking through old business transactions made, even by Y/n’s grandfather, but nothing on anything she said last night, or about her.
He moved on to a completely different side of the compound that was used for storage, he did find a little mention of having to pay back an airline for a table but that didn’t raise any red flags. After trying to find anything about Y/n on his own and coming up with more of nothing, he realized this friend coming later might be his only chance to know Y/n.
Y/n had left long before James woke up, she passed him asleep on the couch, before leaving. She drove on her way to a meeting to get her day started, with work, but she knew eventually she did need to talk to James again and explain but that wasn’t probably going to be happening today. Y/n shook her head clear as she walked up to her father’s old club irritation in every step. “Mis. Carter.” Brock Rumlow’s lips pulled into a smirk.
“Mr. Rumlow.” She gave him a curt nod, before sliding into the booth across from the man. “So what is this meeting about?” She asked as she folded her hands on the table.
“I simply want to become a business partner. I've seen what you have done with your fathers empire, and now look at how far you’ve come since his death.” Brock was trying to sweet talk her and Y/n wasn’t having it she easily saw the facade.
“Rumlow I don’t need praise, I came here for a meeting. So if I decide to do business with you what am I promised in order to not kill you.” She said bluntly looking into his brown eyes, that began to fill with irritation, she had no clue what business he had and she wasn’t going to be sweet-talked into something she didn’t know about.
“I want to sell my drug on your territory.” Brock was bluntly as well now knowing his first tactic wasn’t working.
“No.” She shook her head. “I’m not that stupid, besides Rumlow I’ve already got my own dealers, I don’t need your help.” She stood leaving him, giving order to someone who was cleaning up from the night before to make sure he leaves.
She walked up to the doors of her headquarters, Andy waiting out front greeting her. “Give me a minute before coming up to my office.” She told him, before going in and taking the elevator up to the top floor, she walked to the end of the long hallway opening the frosted doors.
Y/n poured herself a drink, and then a few more, before Andy came up. “So it didn’t go well?” He asked, walking in.
“Believe me I can handle pricks like Rumlow without needing a drink.” Y/n leaned back into the chair relaxing slightly.
Andy nodded. “What’s the morning drinking about then?”
“James, we got into an argument last night.” She sighed out shaking her head. “He wants me to be open with him.”
“Okay. That’s understandable Y/n’s he’s your husband, you wanted him to marry you, you’ve got to be open, the two of you have been living together I’d assume that wouldn’t be hard.” Andy reasoned with her, he did understand where James was coming from in the situation, and Andy was possibly the closest person to Y/n that was still alive.
Wayne walked through the front doors of the house, Bucky’s brows furrowed when seeing him. “Wayne?” Bucky guessed getting up and going to shake his hand.
Wayne didn’t take his hand.“Uh yeah, you're the husband, Mr. Field?” He tilted his head looking at Bucky.
“No, that was her fir-er-second husband, I’m Bucky.” He introduced himself now.
Wayne’s face fell in his own confusion. “When did you two get married?” the blond asked.
“Two months give or take ago.” Bucky shrugged his guessing the time period.
Wayne nodded. “Huh, okay, I’m gonna go find a room for while I’m here I’ll be back.” He smiled making his way up the stairs.
Bucky, though, had a guard follow Wayne, not fully trusting the stranger, Wayne protested once up stairs when realizing someone was following but they went on deaf ears. This guy wasn’t at all what Bucky was thinking. He had long blond hair and sunken features, he didn’t know how Y/n would have ever known this guy.
When Y/n did come home that evening right before dinner, she didn’t arrive with the car that she had taken that morning and Bucky knew that from a little peek in the garage earlier, his brows furrowed, as Andy helped her out of the SUV, the door was pushed open and both of them walked in. “Oh my god Andy is this where I live?” She asked, looking at him with wide eyes, her voice was slightly slurred as she spoke in the background looking around.
Andy nodded. “Yeah it is.” He entertained her before turning to Bucky. “She’s been drinking all day, so I’m going to suggest she doesn't come in tomorrow, tell her I have it handled.” Andy stood in thought for a moment. “She’s probably going to drink more, and she will not listen to anybody when it comes to that so, I’m bidding you good luck.” He turned to leave but just as he turned the door knob, he stopped. “Give her more time, she may be twenty five but she’s been through hell. All I can say is give her more time.” Then Andy walked back out the front door.
Y/n was walking around in amazement, Bucky came up to help her if she needed. “Y/n, dinner is going to be ready soon. Do you want to eat?” He asked, this other than last night probably had to have been the most he’s said to her since the wedding.
Y/n began to eagerly nod. “Yeah, that would be nice.” He began to lead her to the dining room, when they got there all the food was already on the table, and Wayne was there. “Wayne?” She tilted her head in confusion. “You're dead, how are you here?”
“You weren’t much of a drinker last time we saw each other.” Wayne said like it was obvious, Bucky noted this.
“You weren’t as skinny.” Looking at him and talking seemed to have sobered her up just a tad. “What happened to you?” It came out less slurred unlike everything else she said before.
“You remember how we eloped.” He started, Y/n nodded giving him an annoyed look. “Well your dad apparently had plans to marry you to some really rich guy, and he said that he’d pay me every month until I die nine hundred thousand dollars, and you know that's a lot of money.”
“Your fucking shitting me right now right?” She asked with wide eyes.“Right, you're telling me my father gave you one percent of what I make, once a month until you die, and you're calling that a lot of money. You do see the fucking compound your standing in I’ve completely redone it and I could to it a million times, and I would still have more than fucking nine hundred thousand dollars!” She began to laugh, which melted into sobs, Bucky was just watching all of this not knowing what to do. She walked out of the room she came back in with a gun. She pointed it at his head with a slightly wavering hand because she still had alcohol in her system. “I’ll fucking kill you right now. Just because I loved you doesn't mean I’ll give you mercy.” Shook her head. “In fact killing you with a gun is mercy.” And then she pulled the trigger missing Wayne.
Bucky swiftly walked to her grabbing the gun. “Give it to me.” He said softly into her ear, her grip loosened. “I think you should get the fuck out, now, not packing your shit, just run and leave I don’t care if you can’t go back home or if you have no money, just get the fuck out now.” Wayne noded seconds later and soon after the front door slamming echoed out. Bucky turned to Y/n. “Let’s get you to bed.”
As she and Bucky bothe laid in bed preparing to go to sleep with another day of learning nothing Y/n turned to Bucky. “I do care.” She said it so softly to the point Bucky almost couldn’t hear.

Bruce Wayne x Mafia Boss!Male Reader
//Self Indulgent//
Bruce Wayne was a man of many talents. He's trained almost his entire childhood to become what he has desired. Through all his hard work, and by working in Gotham, he expected to have seen everything. But no matter the title given to him by Gotham's people, "The Greatest Detective", he felt like no such thing at this very moment.
He was stumped, admittedly, which was not often. He stared at the face and name of the screen of the Batcomputer like staring at it would make it change in fear of his glare. But it never did, and it wouldn't in the near or far future.
Bruce had been looking into one of the most prominent, yet well hidden, cartels selling drugs and other opioids underground and on the black market. It took him an astonishing two months to even track down one of their runners. It was so hidden in plain sight it was practically invisible. Once he'd gotten intel from one of the runners using his intimidation tactics, he was able to get a spy inside the ranks. They fed him information that got more incriminating the longer he was inside the operation.
But suspiciously, they recently went quiet. The last message he was able to receive from his informat, was that he was going to meet the boss soon, and he'd be able to tell Batman more about him after. Bruce never believed in coincidences. So, he went digging further and found many incidents including rival drug cartels. What he found, set a pit in his stomach.
The name and face printed on the file before him, held an uncanny resemblance to his one and only friend before his parent's murder, and that was, " _____ _____". The name was like lead on his tongue. You were his one true regret when he left for Batman. He disappeared, but you soon followed right after. Bruce had thought you were dead with how your name suddenly dropped off radar.
But now he knew. You're parents had also been killed when one of them failed to persuade a drug dealer to put his gun when they wouldn't buy from him. It was like deja vu all over again. His parents lying dead on the concrete, his mother's pearls drenched him blood. But what he read on the autopsy report, was none similar. Your parents died a slow death of suffocation, chocking on the blood filling their lungs while video cameras recorded you sobbing for them and trying to stop the bleeding.
Now, Bruce realizes just what he's dealing with. That name and face on the file, was none other than you, who took a job in a rival cartel against the killer of your parents and slowly climbed the ranks. You killed every man in your way to kill the bastard that killed your parents. But he couldn't stomach it, the fact the killer still had kids at home and a wife, set him the wrong way. You were only creating the scenario of what happened to you on those kids. What would stop them from killing you in the future?
He needed to stop this, and that's exactly what he set off to do. Dawning the suit and the cowl, he speed out of the cave in the Batmobile to one of the biggest known base of operation. It was a club called Apollo's Sun Strip and Bar in the East end. No matter how much he didn't want to admit, he couldn't deny that the east end was far worse in petty crime that central Gotham. He stopped two attempted assaults, three attempted robberies, and one cat in a tree.
Getting to the club wasn't hard, and Batman would have done more research on studying and watching their moves, but he was on a tight schedule. Using the shadows to his advantage, he crept in through the back of the club and made it to the rosters. Watching from above, he saw many of the dancers on the stage and the patrons sitting in their booths watching or at the bar. He's surprised to see how well managed the place was.
Slipping to the back of the place, it was completely dark, save for a corner of the room being lit up by one over hanging light. Stalking forward, he was surprised to find the lit up corner morph into one of a lounge. It wasn't empty.
Getting into a fighting position, Batman took out a batarang and held it up. A deep, sultry chuckle followed his movements, and the sound of a crystal glass getting set down on wood came right after. A figure sat in a cushioned chair, leaned back just far enough into the shadows to cover his face. They were dressed in a three piece tux. Black trousers and jacket with a red jeweled waist coat, and a deep maroon button up shirt.
He deep, yet smooth voice came from the shadow covered face, " Bruce, it's been a long time. Would you care for a drink perhaps, one with an old friend? " It was said so deceivingly, Batman almost missed the name attached to the sentence. He froze, and watched as the figure laughed in dark joy and slowly rises from the chair. Bruce gulped and wondered how his friend got so,...big.
You walked around one of the chairs and finally stepped into the light. Bruce took in your features, how they've sharpened, and how your eyes had grown darker. You titled your head and chuckled again, " Don't worry about the name, Bruce, your secret is safe with me. But, was isn't safe, " He walked up to Bruce and grabbed him lightly on the chin, "are those lips of yours. "
Bruce only had a second to think about your words before you attacked his lips with your own. He let out a surprised groan that was easily swallowed by you. His hand went slack and the sound of his weapon hitting the ground rung through the entire room as he got over his stupor.
Gasping for air when you pulled back, you lick your lips at the disheveled face he was sporting, or at least, what you could make of it. You chuckled, but kept your grip on his chin, "I always wondered how big bad Batsy has grown. And I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised. "
Bruce huffed and panted for air like a dog, and you chuckled again. Dipping in, you peck his lips one more time before letting him go. Grabbing your glass that was on the table, you drink the rest of it and shoved it into Bruce's chest. He grunted and held onto it, looking up at you in confusion.
You chuckle and saunter away, an extra away in your hips and you comb your fingers through your hair, " For the identity, Darling. I'm giving you a little leeway. Now, I won't make this little game easy, Bruce. But I know, you never like anything easy. " At the end of your little speel, the lights flickered and you were gone. The only sound Bruce heard the the thump of the bass, and the murmurs of the people talking in the main room.
Looking down, Bruce found a single thumb print on the class. He smirked and looked back up to where you were last, " Sneaky bastard. "
//Hope you enjoyed it! //

GENCON 2017
Alright, so here is a general recap of GENCON 2017, the largest Con Ive ever been to and the largest GENCON ever. this will be a long post so I apologize in advance. So ya GENCON.
....IT WAS AWESOME.
Never before have I experienced Nerd culture at this magnitude. It was truly an overwhelming experience. Just look at this map!
Not only did the convention take place in all three stories of the convention center, it also enveloped three surrounding motels and the Colts stadium featured above.(At the opening ceremony, the announcer actually made a joke about how it was pretty damn awesome that the nerds had taken over the football stadium, and that he’d never heard of the football fans taking over hte convention center.I laughed, HARD)
I was able to go to Gencon, mainly because a buddy of mine basically went to it as a kind of business trip for his Youtube Channel.
He Reviews new and exciting boardgames .Awesome dude and an awesome channel to which I'm grateful he let me tag along for the trip. Heres a link to his channel if any of you all are interested! Link
The other buddy of mine I went with also has a youtube channel devoted to boardgame kickerstarters called Hivestate:
his channels fairly young but he makes really good content. hers a link also if you want to check him out. Link
But enough with me being a billboard for these guys, back to GenCon.
So the first day of the Con, as I sad I was very, VERY overwhelmed. I come from a fairly small city that's pretty well spaced out, so seeing that many people in one place was...JARRING to say the least.
I'll say this though, the entire time I was there, I didn't hear of a single event where someone got assaulted or anything bad like that happening. and there were about 166,000 people the first day of the con I believe, Speaks volumes for our hobby and the community.
BUT:
LOOK
AT ALL THESE
NERDS
My people :’)
Anyway, the first day within like ten minutes of entering the dealer's hall I managed to loose both Mitch(Kwarenteen) And Zack(Hive State) to which I remember just uttering “well shit” as soon as I realized I was alone. After that though, the week went smoothly.
The coolest thing that happened to me the first day was I ended up meeting Uncle Atom from Tabletop minions, to which I made a complete fool of myself but its ok I got to meet someone whose videos have helped so much in my short wargaming life!
Super chill dude too, it was great meeting him!
Carrying on, Demo’d a game called Dropfleet, a low orbit fleet tactics tabletop game
I picked up Dropfleet on the spot. Did I mention the MINIs ARE FREAKIN GORGEOUS.
Cool thing about this game is it also can be played beside or in sussecion with another game called dropfleet commander, which is the ground side version of the game.
Dropfleet and Dropzone gave me a very Halo vibe, so I'm diffidently looking forward to playing the crap out of the game.
The second day was equally crazy, Demo’ed more games, and saw even more awesome stuff. That day I also got to meet the creator of Kingdom Death Adom Poots. Awesome human being, and very VERY passionate about his game and the future of said game.
Also, as a Warhammer 40000 fan I found a booth that was selling bits by the BUCKETS. If id been left alone there Id have spent all of my funds for the con there. They even had I believe like first edition imperial guard minis and a really old looking Land Raider.
actually forgot to buy that book while I was there...
After the dealers hall closed on the second day we split up again, Mitch went to some after party thing he had to go to and Zack and I went and got some food and expored downtown Indy. Got a message from Mitch though and I, well I nearlly doubled over when I saw the picture.expored downtown Indy. Apparently, he came in second in a sexy nurse costume contest style thing. I envy this mans courage XD ( hes the one in the red dress)
Rest of the week was about the same. Came to the Con, Demo’d games, wished I had more money, and saw amazing Cosplayers. Here are just the rest of the general pictures I took at the con. Various minis and games. Ill make a seperate post about the cosplayers I saw as I have way too many to put in this one post.
(THIS WAS AMAZING IN PERSON)
(Didnt pick this up but it lookd cool so I grabbed a pic)
(Fallout boardgame looked like its alot of fun, didnt get to demo it though )
Another Miniatures game I intend on getting into called Wild West exodus:
the models are absolutly beautiful, my crappy phone does not do them justice.
(Eagle is gorgeous)
(Another game i bought into called BUSHIDO. I am weak with money when it comes to miniatures...)
(Mitch before entering the Con.)
(MITCH, LOCKED AND LOADED FOR THOSE SWEET BOARDGAMES)
(Another shot of the peoples of GENCON. Just, wow)
(GENCON’s famed Cardhalla.)
(Game called the Godfather.)
And here is my loot at the end of Gencon!
So ya that was GENCON for me. Had an absolute blast and I already can't wait to go back next year. Truly was an amazing experience.

Glenn O’Brien, New York Cultural Icon, Dead at 70—and the 9 Other Biggest News Stories This Week
Catch up on the latest art news with our rundown of the 10 stories you need to know this week.
01 Glenn O’Brien, the pioneering writer who captured the creativity of downtown New York, has died at 70.
(via Artforum)
Glenn O’Brien passed away on April 7th, after battling a long-term illness. A fixture in the 1980s downtown New York scene, O’Brien corralled its artistic energy into magazines like Andy Warhol’s Interview, serving as its first editor, and articles for Artforum, Rolling Stone, GQ, The New Yorker, and more. From 1978 to 1982, O’Brien also co-created and hosted an influential public-access television show, TV Party, in which he conducted humorous, deadpan interviews with downtown luminaries like Klaus Nomi, David Byrne, Debbie Harry, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. O’Brien collaborated with Basquiat on numerous projects before the painter’s untimely death in 1988; notably, he produced and wrote the screenplay for Downtown 81, a 1981 film that followed 19-year-old Basquiat around the city as he painted its surfaces. Along with extensive writings on art, O’Brien is remembered for his keen sense of style and pioneering men’s fashion journalism. In the 1990s, as contributing editor to Details magazine, he established the celebrated column “Style Guy,” which in 1999 he took to GQ; it ran until 2015.
02 The artist list for Documenta 14 was released on Thursday as previews of the quinquennial exhibition commenced.
(via ARTnews)
Opening to the public on Saturday, April 8, Documenta 14 is split equally across two cities—Athens, Greece and its traditional home of Kassel, Germany—for the first time in the exhibition’s 62-year history. Titled “Learning from Athens,” Polish curator Adam Szymczyk’s iteration of one of contemporary art’s most significant and defining exhibitions features some 150 living artists and collectives, including Nevin Aladağ, Alexandra Bachzetsis, Geta Brătescu, Maria Eichhorn, Douglas Gordon, Hans Haacke, Hiwa K, Daniel Knorr, Ibrahim Mahama, Jonas Mekas, Otobong Nkanga, Pope.L, Georgia Sagri, as well as over 50 artists who have passed away—another break with tradition. The Athens portion takes place across 47 venues in the city and runs through July 16th, while Kassel will take place from June 10th through September 17th at currently undisclosed locations. As is customary for the exhibition, details about either city were scarce until Thursday morning’s press conference in Athens, where the artists for that city’s portion of the show were unveiled in spectacular fashion: All of the participating artists and curators appeared on stage to sing a work by Greek composer Jani Christou.
03 A federal court has ruled that Germany can be sued in the United States over Nazi-looted art, paving the way for the nation to face a U.S. court for the first time in a Nazi restitution case.

In what lawyers for the heirs are calling a landmark decision, last Friday a Washington D.C. District Court ruled that Germany can be sued in U.S. court in the Guelph Treasure case. A collection of 11th to 15th century precious Prussian artifacts valued at over $250 million, the treasure was sold under duress by Jewish art dealers in 1935 to members of the Third Reich. The case had already been heard by a German commission, which found that, though the sales prices were low, the sum wasn’t a result of coercion but of an art market decline. Germany’s attorney, Jonathan Freiman, told Reuters in an email that “this is a dispute that was already resolved on the merits in Germany, and it doesn't belong in a U.S. court.” But the District Court disagreed, instead siding with the argument put forward by the heirs of the dealers: that such a taking constituted a violation of international law and as such, falls under U.S. jurisdiction as an exception to the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act. Nicholas M. O’Donnell, a partner at Sullivan & Worcester representing the plaintiffs, said in a statement, “We are pleased that the Court agreed that a forced sale for an inadequate sum to agents of Hermann Goering enjoys no immunity from justice.”
04 Renowned Pop artist James Rosenquist has died at age 83.

James Rosenquist passed away in his New York City home on Friday, March 31st, after battling an ongoing illness, according to his wife, Mimi Thompson. Rosenquist is known for working at the vanguard of 1960s Pop Art alongside the likes of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Both celebrated and criticized for his pointedly political approach, Rosenquist, a former billboard painter, frequently adapted commercial imagery to critique American consumerism and militarism. F-111 (1964–1965), one of his most iconic works, depicts a military jet stretched across an 86-foot expanse of more than 50 panels and punctured by the imagery of mid-century advertising. His idiosyncratic, large-scale paintings are in the collections of MoMA, the Guggenheim and the Whitney, among other institutions, and an exhibition of his work will go on view at Germany’s Museum Ludwig later this year.
05 An Andy Warhol “Mao” broke an auction record in China but still came in under its estimate, sparking a debate about the country’s market.
(via South China Morning Post)
Backed by an irrevocable bid, Warhol’s red silkscreen Mao (1973) sold for HK$ 86 million ($11.1 million) with fees—below the low estimate of HK$ 90 million ($11.6 million)—at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong on Sunday, April 2nd. Last sold at auction in 2014 for $12.2 million, the Warhol went to an unnamed Asian collector bidding over the phone. Though the sale was trumpeted for breaking the record for Western contemporary art sold in China, the relatively tepid interest in the Warhol work and a piece by Keith Haring—especially compared to the strong interest in Asian and Japanese art at the auction—signaled to some that the region’s appetite for Western contemporary artists has softened. But there are other reasons the Warhol may have underperformed. Dealers at Art Basel in Hong Kong earlier this month reported that stereotypically “Chinese” material no longer plays well in the region due to collectors’ rapidly expanding education and sophistication—one even singled out red Maos as a fad of the past. Asian buyers, dealers also said, have been compelled to spend more when bidding against Western collectors at sales in New York and London.
06 Groundbreaking artist Lorna Simpson is now represented by Hauser & Wirth.

The international gallery announced Tuesday that it will take on worldwide representation of Simpson. This news precedes Frieze New York in May, where the artist’s work will show at Hauser & Wirth’s booth. “We are honored and delighted to welcome Lorna Simpson into the gallery’s family,” said gallery vice president Marc Payot in a statement. “Her rigor, her passion, and her incredible sensitivity produce not only extraordinary art but also an invitation to engage in a dialogue about identity that we are eager to share.” Since rising to prominence in the late 1980s, Simpson’s mixed-media photographs have scrutinized visual and linguistic representations of race and gender. In 1990, she became the first African-American woman to show her work at the Venice Biennale. Other artists represented by Hauser & Wirth include Zoe Leonard, Roni Horn, and Rashid Johnson.
07 Several museums are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Marcel Duchamp’s seminal readymade Fountain by offering free admission on Sunday.
(via Hyperallergic)
Organized by Duchamp scholar Thomas Girst, several major museums across the globe—including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto—are participating in the initiative, which also has the approval of Association Marcel Duchamp. Visitors who utter the name “R. Mutt” or “Richard Mutt,” the pseudonym Duchamp used to sign Fountain (1917), will be let in free of charge from 3-4 p.m. on April 9th. The timing stems from Duchamp’s notable affinity for trios (he once remarked “three is everything” to a BBC reporter). Inspired by the urinal used for Fountain, some museums will also host Duchampian events in their bathrooms. In what the Philadelphia Museum of Art is calling a “special location,” the institution will host a local theater company’s reenactment of the scandal first caused by the artwork in 1917. “Instead of doing your usual symposium, where people put their heads together and say things that have been said so many times before—most of it self referential and sometimes boring—it’s great to honor the anniversary with somewhat of a Dada gesture,” Girst told Artsy. Visitors can tag their experiences or follow along with the festivities via the hashtag “#Fountain100”.
08 Russia has criminalized images that challenge Vladimir Putin’s masculinity.
(via New York Times)
The Russian Justice Ministry declared last month that images showing Russian President Vladimir Putin in an unmasculine light constitute “extremist materials.” The ruling stems from an edited image depicting Putin in heavy drag makeup posted last year to the social network VKontakte. Those who share or display such images can now face a fine of 3,000 rubles ($52) or a 15-day detention. Putin is known for his cultivation of a personal mythos of hypermasculinity, with widely publicized photos showing him riding horses shirtless or sporting weaponry. Putin is also notorious for enacting deeply homophobic legislation—including a ban on adoptions by LGBT couples, the legalized detention of suspected gay citizens and tourists, and the classification of potential “homosexual propaganda” as pornography. This has led to allegations about Putin’s sexuality to become a common protest tactic, a trend this legislation is designed to stifle.
09 The FBI has recovered a stolen Norman Rockwell painting, 40 years after its disappearance.
(via the New York Times)
The Rockwell work, which depicts a slumbering child and his dog, was stolen during a home burglary in 1976. Originally purchased for no more than $100, over the intervening years the piece’s value has reached an estimated $1 million. Decades after the theft—and a few years after the original owner, Robert Grant, passed away in 2004—Grant’s son, John, was inspired to rekindle the search. On the 40th anniversary of the work’s theft, the FBI issued a news release and several Philadelphia outlets ran the story. The renewed attention did the trick as the painting had ended up in the possession of an art dealer who was unaware of its provenance. The dealer turned it over to authorities and the FBI subsequently returned the painting to John Grant last week.
10 A court cleared the Polish government’s controversial takeover of the country’s Museum of the Second World War.
(via New York Times)
The institution will fall under control of the Polish government following Wednesday’s decision by the Polish Supreme Administrative Court. Opened in March in the city of Gdańsk, the museum was conceived to be Europe’s most exhaustive public exhibition on World War II. However, indication that Poland’s right-wing government will seek to alter the museum’s historical direction has ignited a protracted debate. Museum director Pawel Machcewicz curated a permanent exhibition that adopts an international perspective on the histories of Polish citizens, Eastern Europeans, and Nazi Germany’s persecution of Jews. The current Polish administration has long criticized Machcewicz—an appointee of the previous centrist government—placing his future with the museum into question. Poland’s culture ministry has expressed its vision for a more nationalist perspective, one more narrowly focused on Polish losses during the Battle of Westerplatte. Culture Minister Piotr Glinski had previously argued that such a change in conceptual direction would greatly benefit the museum. And on Wednesday, Machcewicz criticized the court’s ruling, expressing his uncertainty over the permanent exhibition’s future integrity.
