I bought the first volume of Dear Friends of L'Heure Bleue by the incredibly talented @aki-511 because I wanted to support the print release of one of my new favorite digital comics, and I have to say - this book is a love letter to les Amis and to MY SPECIALEST BOY COMBEFERRE (and also to Enjolras and Grantaire and Jehan and Feuilly and all the rest, but if you like Combeferre you will love this work). The art is gorgeous, the lettering is evocative, the composition is easy to follow, and the warmth and humanity that shines through in every drawing of the cast is so wonderful.

This is a prequel, detailing how les Amis met and came together and how they slowly radicalized and refined their mission. I read only a little Japanese, but I would imagine that if you don’t, anyone familiar with the book and the setting and the history would have little trouble following along with the story because the art is so evocative. I love watching Enjolras and Combeferre slowly become friends (I also love how immediately stricken with gay yearning everyone in this cast is upon beholding Enjolras) and I love seeing Combeferre grow into himself. There are tiny little details in everything that speak to book canonicity and the care for the Brick that is vital to a good story.

The first volume is currently the only place you can read the complete first few chapters, but once you’re caught up, it is being serialized on Comic Growl in Japanese. If you, like me, want to see an English release, go comment on the comic as it’s posted!

I love this series so far and I cannot wait to see it grow.
