This is my first SPN work and first completed long fic, and my pride and joy 🥹 Full of hijinks, husbandism, angst/bickering, cuddling and making up, Cas being a flirty bitchy bastard, Dadstiel, Dad!Dean, and healing. Cas has just returned from The Empty. Jack is a toddler and everything is brand new, including his relationship with Dean. How will they move forward?

A flash of white caught the corner of Dean’s eye across the room.

“You seem to be adjusting well to the aunt life, huh?” Dean says with a smirk as Claire meanders into the kitchen.

“Shut up,” says Claire in reply, a red flush creeping up her neck. “I saw it at Target and I knew he’d love it.”

Suddenly, Jack appears at Dean’s feet, wrapped in a white blanket with a hood that resembled a polar bear with mittens to match. He holds up his hands and lets out the loudest ROAR that could possibly be expected from a teenager turned five-year-old.

“Ah!” Dean yelps, pretending to be scared. He kneels down next to Jack. “What kind of bear are you?”

Jack smiles. “I’m a Jack bear!” With that, he runs away again, his blanket billowing against his heels.

Dean stands up and turns back to the task at hand – chopping vegetables for their dinner tonight.

“How are you doing, Dean?”

Dean doesn’t turn around; he simply shrugs one shoulder and grunts in reply.

“Cas is back and that’s all you have to say about it?” Claire pushes, poking her finger into the small of Dean’s back.

“What is there to say?” Dean replies, “He’s back. We defeated God. Jack finally gets to be a kid. Life is good.”

“If you say so!” Claire says before running after Jack.

Dean chuckles nervously and chops the carrot in front of him a little bit harder than he probably should. Cas came back yesterday – fully intact except for his grace. It was a difficult adjustment, coming back from The Empty. Jack was a child now, and the world was a very different place. Dean knew that, and yet – he couldn’t help but selfishly think that it was just as hard for him to adjust to this new normal. The way they left things wasn’t exactly neatly wrapped in a bow. Dean has had a lot of time to think about things, but not enough time to imagine what it would look like to actually have the things Cas suggested before being taken from him. However, Cas also had time to think. What if he didn’t mean it in the way Dean wanted him to mean it? What if he doesn’t feel the same way anymore?

“Hello, Dean.”

Dean jumps. “Cas, you can’t sneak up on me like that. I almost sliced my finger off.” He turns around to lean against the counter and look over at the angel. He was fresh from his bed, hair sticking out in every direction and his stupid trenchcoat falling off his shoulders. Dean wanted to reach out and touch him, to take the trenchcoat off and wrap him in a blanket instead. To drag him close and never let him go again.

“My apologies, Dean.” Cas says with a small but knowing smile. Cas rubs his eyes and shuffles over to the table to sit down.

“How are you feeling?” Dean asks.

Cas sighs. “I never imagined I’d be coming back here, Dean. I am feeling many things. I am feeling very… human.”

Dean feels his eyes starting to water, remembering what it was like before Cas came home. He never wanted to go back there again. He looks away to wipe his face surreptitiously, even though he knows Cas can tell how he’s feeling from a mile away.

“Cas, I…”

Before he could get the sentence out, Cas was standing right in front of him, his thumb pressing against the side of Dean’s face to wipe away the rest of his tears. His big blue eyes examined Dean’s face like they were looking for clues about what should happen next. Dean presses himself back into the counter, and Castiel follows.

Cas clears his throat. “Dean, I want you to know that everything I said that day was the truth. I do not mean to make you uncomfortable, but I also do not intend to take it back. You are the best man I’ve ever known, and I love you more than I can say. The love I feel for you grows stronger each second I am human. It is almost intolerable.”

Dean let out a small laugh. “You came back from the dead to tell me how intolerable I am?”

Cas rolls his eyes. “I came back from The Empty to tell you that I’m yours if you’ll have me.”

Dean’s breath catches in his throat. He looks frantically back and forth between Cas’s eyes. His mouth tries to form words, but nothing comes out. He doesn’t know how long it had been since Castiel last spoke, but the angel seemed to take his silence as rejection and started to move away. Dean couldn’t have that.

He grabs the lapels of that stupid trenchcoat, pulls it up over Castiel’s shoulders, and brings their lips together softly.

It was nothing like Dean imagined it would be. There was no blood, no anger, no hurt between them. It was just the two of them, doing what they should have been doing for a very long time. No one was coming after them. There was no need to rush.

This was all Dean would ever need for the rest of his life.

A crash rings out, and the two reluctantly separate. Jack slipped on the end of his blanket, falling face first into a pile of fleece and whatever snack Claire brought over to ruin his dinner. However, just like every other five-year-old, Jack simply bounces off the floor, wraps himself back up in his blanket, and runs over to Castiel – ignoring the mess of food left behind.

“Daddy! I’m a bear!” Jack says excitedly. Cas puts his hands on his hips and assesses Jack’s costume.

“Now that’s a scary bear.” He looks over at Dean and winks.

Jack summons Cas down to his level to whisper in his ear. “Daddy, you’re supposed to run away from me. I’m a bear.”

“Oh! Oh, right.” Cas presses his hand into Dean’s for a moment and gives it a squeeze before releasing it to jog away from Jack. Jack follows along as fast as his little feet can carry him.

Dean watches them with a soft smile. A moment passes before he notices Claire in the hallway.

She’s grinning at him. “I’m happy for you both. Also, Sam owes me five dollars.”

Dean scowls at throws a piece of carrot at her as she ducks out of the room in a fit of giggles. He smiles despite himself. He turns back to the cutting board and continues making dinner, his family playing and laughing in the next room. For the first time in a very long time, he is happy.

Another round of brainrot. I hope they never fix what's wrong with me.

Beggars Would Ride by Tiamatv (Explicit, 118k)

You had me at Aladdin AU. When Dean Winchester is caught stealing, he's given one chance for freedom. Go into the Cave of Wonders, grab the amulet, and get out. Things don't go as planned. Now he's got a moody ancient genie to contend with. But maybe he can use up two of his wishes and then grant the genie his wish: to be free. What could go wrong?

This fic is an absolutely delight. I laughed so hard, especially at the fun ways Tiamatv played with the SPN canon and the Disney movies. But beyond the humor is some really fantastic world building and a beautiful story about finding your way when you feel trapped by life.

Genie Cas is very cute and grumpy and sassy, and it's fun to watch him start to care. And Dean has so much heart it will make you ache. Sam and Jess are disgustingly cute but both are also whip smart and fun. And Jo (Jess’ sister in this) is the knife girl of my dreams.

This one is hard to put down.

Tourbillon Dreams by kayliemalinza @kayliemalinza (Mature, 40k)

Dean uses Bobby's life insurance proceeds to buy a hoarders house stuffed to the brim with cursed and haunted objects. But when he finds a clock that also happens to be an angel, things take an unexpected turn.

It sounds cracky and there is some delightful humor, but this fic packs a beautiful emotional punch. Dean is in his peak caretaking, competency mode and Clockstiel is adorable and entranced with Dean in a way that is just immensely readable.

There is something starkly gorgeous about the way Dean and Cas are physically so different and yet they find each other in meaningful and beautiful ways.

Love Is a Meat Loaf Song by followyourenergy @followyourenergy (Explicit, 68k)

A reimagining of canon where Dean is never saved and becomes a demon. He's bored waiting for the apocalypse when he happens upon a certain blue eyed seraph and they decide to work together.

This fic has all the delightful sassiness you expect of Demon!Dean and especially when he spends time with his frenemy, Meg. It also has just absolutely amazing angel lore and a deep dive into Cas and his trauma. All of this is wrapped up in a soft love story about two beings finding each other and seeing each other and breaking down each other's walls.

It's the entire package of funny, sincere and romantic.

Where there is Darkness by quiettewandering @wanderingcas (Explicit, 91k)

I may have popped this on at some point when it was a WIP but I have to renew my recommendation if so. Dean and Sam are lighthouse keepers, but Dean keeps driving off the third member of their team until Cas shows up. But will they be able to overcome their past to carve out happiness?

This Dean and Cas are so delicious. I am deeply fond of them both. They are fighting against so much baggage and yet they find in each other something so special. Sammy is also perfectly oblivious in the best way. It's hard to explain what makes this fic special except that it is so engrossing, you will be slamming next chapter

Valley of God by ValleyDean @valleydean (Mature, 145k)

I know. I KNOW. The MCD tag is daunting in a fic like this but I promise that while it is accurate, then ending is softer than you think and it's really the way it should end.

So there are a few things about this fic that make it absolutely delicious. First, it really delves into Cas’ trauma in a really gorgeous way. We don’t have enough fics that look at his angel trauma (we can't for me tbh) and this one uses a religious cult situation to delve into it. Second, Dean and Cas in this fic are just so messy and delightful. Dean wants to believe that Cas is good so badly. Cas wants to protect Dean the same way. It's crunchy. Finally, the atmosphere is amazing. It's creepy. It gets under your skin.

Is it dark? Absolutely. But it's also amazing.

The Darkest Sunshine by StarlightOfFandoms @starlightoffandoms (Explicit, 35k)

If murder husbands is your thing, this one is a delight of a fic. Dean Winchester is the Righteous Man serial killer, a notorious murderer who goes after monsters (in human form). People who are guilty of abhorrent crimes. But when he goes after Cas, a professor believed to have murdered several students, he discovers an innocent man being framed. Together with Cas and his team, Dean decides to find the real killer. He just has to pretend to be Cas’ boyfriend until they succeed.

The fake dating trope in a murder husbands fic was a total delight. So was the fact that Dean doesn't work alone and has a full support system to go after the worst of the worst. It's an intriguing concept done really well. Dean in this fic is an interesting blend of sociopathic tendencies, a strong sense of justice, and a willingness to do anything for those he is loyal to. Cas is intrigued by Dean and accepts him as he is. It's a really great combination.

A Weed In Any Other Place by VioletHaze @scones-and-texting-and-murder (Explicit, 63k)

On the other end of the spectrum is this fluffy rom com. There is some angst, but most of it is soft, sweet falling in love along with supportive friends and family.

Cas is a writer. Well, Cas had a book published and now he's desperately trying to write his second while convincing himself the first was probably just a fluke. Writers block is a bitch. That is until his car breaks down and he ends up at a little shop called Winchester and Son. By some weird trick of fate, it's exactly what he needs. He has the most productive day in years sitting in their waiting room. So he comes back, and keeps coming back. The extremely cute mechanic with green eyes doesn't hurt.

Cas is a disaster at social situations in a relatable way. Dean is struggling to put away some bad lessons from his dad so that he can find what he wants instead of what his father pushed on him. Both have a lovely support system. Charlie, in particular, makes me deeply fond in this fic.

My lovely Tumblr wife is back at it, writing the most delightfully chaotic fic based on Misha's prompt awhile back for President Cas and Fast Food Janitorial Staff Dean Winchester. It's a Cinderella story and in equal parts hilarious and adorable. Also it is a Dean-saster/Cas-tastrophe pairing which is always fun plus there's a 2 person love triangle situation.

Dean's stuck in a miserable job with his only escape being his love of How I Met Your Mother and the Tumblr blog he devotes to the fandom. But when a handsome man walks in one night after hours, things heat up. Too bad the man in question is actually the President.

It's a romp and a love letter to fandom.

Must-read Destiel fics - my superduper Nov. 5th rec list

Three years ago, on the blessed day of November 5th, 2020, I had:

never seen an episode of SPN,

only had a vague inkling of what the two pale coconuts were on about,

and I hee-heed and ha-had with the rest of Tumblr about the love confession scene and the Internet errupting in an unparalleled craze

At first I thought, that's it.

Then ... I got curious. I watched some YouTube Destiel supercuts. I read some fic (I think @andhumanslovedstories beautiful Cas/OC fic was my entry point?). I read meta. I watched some more YouTube scene packs. I read even more fic. I watched some of S4, some of S1, some random fan fav episodes. And then Destiel lodged itself so deeply, thouroughly into my brain that it took over and hasn't relinquished control in the last two years. The most tenacious, pervasive brain worm to date.

This ship got it all, and this fandom got it all, and there's such delightful, powerful, batshit crazy, romantic, expertedly crafted fanfic out there, it's like being a starving child in the world's biggest candystore.

So without further ado, here's some of my very favorite fics from this infinite trove, with all my thanks to the wonderful writers who keep delighting and awing me with their dedication and craft. Wildly romantic fics that warm you up from the inside.

It Won't Be Perfect by someonetoanyone (10K words) Summary: Dean daydreams about what it'd be like to let himself love Cas freely.

Why I love it: the humor, the spot-on characterizations, and the quintessential late season Destiel-ness of being so deeply love with your best friend that it's too big to actually do anything about. Just. So warm.

Rock Lobster by Ginger Fail (13K) Summary: Cas decides that the lobsters Dean planned to cook need to get back home. Impromptu beach vacation ensues!

Why I love it: This road trip story is fresh and invigorating like a sea breeze! Fun, entertaining and full of deep, deep fondness.

Seek to Know You Better by ahurston (32K)

Summary: On a road trip, Dean and Cas play the 36 Questions That Lead To Love.

Why I love it: They’re so deliberatedly, carefully starting a relationship here. They try so hard to bridge the gaps and meet each other halfway. A very mature take on love that feels nourishing.

Fics that make you go BARK BARK BARK.

samson went back to bed by piesexuality (9k, @twoheadedcas) Summary: Cas strikes a deal with Chuck - keeping his family together comes at the price of their free will.

Why I love it: What if Cas got his revenge for the Mala'ak box? What if love came at the price of everything you've been fighting for? What if a story twisted the knife oh so sweetly? Each word of this one lands a punch. Made me insane in the best of ways (cue pinned fanart).

In sickness by @saintedcastiel (41K) Summary: S4 redux but Castiel has a fetish: giving Dean the sniffles.

Why I love it: This one is soooo. Can barely find words for it. It taps into Cas' early season alienness and psychosexual obsession with Dean, brilliantly demonstrates Casdean vs Samruby parallels, and each word is just. Perfect. ARGH!

so much smoke in a hall full of mirrors by AreYouReady (6K, @autisticandroids ) Summary: Godstiel is losing his heavenly war. Crowley provides a compliant Dean-doll for him to release his frustrations upon.

Why I love it: Urgh, this one is sooo dark. Taps into the scary, intimidating and alien aspects of Godstiel so well. Gore, consent and psychosexual issues galore. Delicious.

Special mention: In a Parked Car, Exhuming Ophelia by @an-android-in-a-tutu (17K). Still need to comment properly ;)

Angsty fics that tear you to pieces to remake you better.

What Used To Be Mine by someonetoanyone (48K words) Summary: Dean never makes his apology prayer in Purgatory - Cas dies, Dean mourns.

Why I love it: Oh god, this is a heavy hitter. Just, straight up insurmontable grief, packaged in poetic, raw language to make you shed tears and tears. Loved it so much.

Ignite your bones By ilovehowyouletmefall (67K, @angelinthefire) Summary: Dean accepts Chuck's deal: killing Sam to save the world.

Why I love it: Cruuuuel cruel premise for a story that doesn’t pull its punches. It gets dark in Dean’s head and everyone around him suffers. Wonderfully written. The ending set my brain on fire.

Right Where you Left Me by outdean (93K, @armandgender)

Summary: Cas comes back from the Empty after 10 years to find Dean married to another man.

Why I love it: This one is a riiiide. When grief has become a part of you but your love comes back… When you return from the dead and have to carve a new space into the world for yourself... nothing is easy here, but the emotions are INTENSE. Also, autistic!Cas for the win.

Expansive, wild adventures with lots of ups and downs

Summary: An 18y old Dean grew up on a horse farm – cue veterinarian Castiel. The summer of a lifetime ensues.

Why I love it: So this is one of my very favorite stories, ever ever, and I cannot recommand enough to immediatedly suscribe to the author’s Substack to be able to follow it in „real time“ next summer. It’s cinematic, rich, full of darkness and light, it’s everything a story can aspire to, I’m just. I just really love it.

Second Verse, Same as The First by LaLaCat1 (135K)

Summary: Endverse!Cas is sent back to the start of S1 and is determined to make things right this time round.

Why I love it: a desperate and badass Cas, unfridging everyone, a thrilling plot, moments of awesome for the entire cast, gripping action scenes, a romance for the ages… this is a genuinely amazing story.

back road, black road by eden22 (167K)

Summary: 18y old Sam gets kidnapped by Hell on his way to Stanford. Dean tries to deal.

Why I love it: So this one’s not Destiel-centric but does have wonderful Destiel moments. It’s also very heavy on the gore and the angst (NOT for the faint of stomach), but expertly crafted, fascinating and frankly it deserves more love. Held my breath for half the read and never knew where it’d take me.

Why I love it: Just. Late season Dean being deranged about Cas’ sexuality while everyone watches on in utter confusion. Equally hilarious and deeply moving

like i totally get it, i do. that dynamic fits them the best and is arguably the truest to their personalities and relationship with each other......

but hear me out:

there's something so intensely romantic and hot about the concept of an angel of the lord overwhelmed, trembling and whimpering at the hands of the righteous man. need to see that ancient celestial creature strung out, desperate, whining, yearning, pathetically whipped and weak with how deeply and completely in love he is. i want castiel--the mighty seraph with power far beyond human comprehension--absolutely wrecked as dean winchester slowly and lovingly takes him apart mind, body, and soul.

Or is it something much more sinister, watching and waiting for the opportune moment?
