                                                          Prendete un trio chitarra, basso e batteria di stanza a Minneapolis (luogo con più di una suggestione musicale) abituato a giocare con i generi (folk, rock, jazz, classica, americana?) aggiungete un pianista difficilmente etichettabile e mai banale come Bill Carrothers e avrete un' idea del disco in questione. Solo un'idea s'intende perché poi l'ascolto rivela una continua sorpresa. Due brani di John Coltrane, due di Thelonious Monk, uno di Jimmy Van Heusen e cinque originali si insediano nell'orecchio dell'ascoltatore senza se e senza ma, reclamano a piena voce l'attenzione in cambio di corroboranti dosi di piacere. A cominciare dall'iniziale "Ann R Chi Suite," con i suoi nove minuti abbondanti il brano più lungo del CD. L'introduzione del pianoforte di Carrothers è impressionistica e dolente, pronta ad accogliere la chitarra di Dean Magraw, liquida, di opulenta sonorità ma leggera nel danzare sul tappeto ritmico -carico di swing e frastagliato al tempo stesso -improntato da Chris Bates e Jay Epstein. Non sono da meno le versioni delle coltraniane "The Big Nick" e "Living Space." La prima è altamente contagiosa nella sua levità di approccio, nella gioia che dispensa a piene mani la sei corde di Magraw, nelle prelibatezze armoniche di Carrothers. La seconda è meravigliosamente giocata sul contrasto tra gli echi southern-rock della chitarra slide e la coinvolgente improvvisazione di stampo modale che ne segue. Senza dimenticare le ballad anomale che costellano il disco e la conclusiva "Think of One," un Monk groovy come non mai. In definitiva, un album melodioso ma non sdolcinato, dalla robusta verve elettrica ma acustico nell'anima, ricco di swing come di spigoli, ingannevolmente spensierato, vagamente cosmico e... tutto da ascoltare!
