[ 🧀 ] is there something your muse can’t live down, no matter how hard they try? what is it? if not, is there something your muse has said or done that embarrasses them? [ 🦋 ] does your muse have any unconventional interests? what are they? [ 😈 ] does your muse like to prank others? do they do so often? ~ Mary Woodhull~
Tumblr media
[ 🧀 ]
In Mary’s case, it’s not something she’s done but rather having to live down Abraham’s indiscretions. She’s far enough away from her hometown of Oyster Bay that any embarrassing stories from her childhood would not make it to Setauket. Abe’s behavior, however, likely made the rounds through Setauket pretty fast. (Logically, in a small town doing stunts like buying flowers and leaving them in a line from the backdoor of the Strong Tavern to the Strong’s cellar would be noticed and commented on by the neighbors…as Dean Brody put it “people know you by your first name and what you did last night”). So, Mary gets to live with the knowledge that most of lot of people in town are at least tossing rumors around about her marital issues. She deals with her fair share of the Sewing Circle ladies abruptly changing the topic when she comes in, pitying looks from older women and a lot of ‘you poor thing’ head-shakes. It dies down somewhat after the farm burns down and they move into White Hall but she knows it won’t take much to push the rumor mill back into action. [ 🦋 ]
You mean besides playing with fire and burning things down? In all seriousness, Mary is a very conventional woman in her habits, interests and viewpoints. However, her loose association with the Culper Ring starts opening her eyes to other talents she didn’t know she had—diversion, deception, tactical planning etc. Once the war is done, a part of her regrets putting those skills aside and fully resuming her roles as a farmer’s wife. It’s not that she regrets being a wife; she thoroughly adores her children and has made peace with Abraham. She just started to realize that she has so many other skills too and she is not sure when she’ll ever use them again. [ 😈 ]
Mary does not have an impish personality so pranking people really isn’t something she even considers doing. That being said, she is not above doing something particularly nasty if you make her mad enough. Such actions might resemble pranks IF she does not actually want to maim/kill someone but that is not a common set of circumstances.

strike gold || jake virtanen

Author’s Note: I said on the other Jake fic I wrote that I’d write a fic with him about a country concert eventually. This is that fic. I picked the band (technically it’s a brother/sister duo) I did because they were the last concert I saw. Even then, it was supposed to be part of a bigger concert. They were the opening act for Dean Brody and Dallas Smith... who I didn’t stay for even though I love them even more than The Reklaws. F in chat for that. GIF credit to martinnecas!!
Warning: Beer consumption. Both the reader and Jake partake in it. If you need to avoid that, I understand and stay safe!!
Word Count: 1.0k+
Title: Roots by The Reklaws
Additional: The lyrics from the song are used in this. The song is about a non-descript Canadian hockey player that made the World Junior roster. The song makes references once or twice about the player having a girlfriend but I don’t make reference to the gender of the reader. How you interpret the gender of the reader is completely up to you. Hope that’s okay and hope you enjoy this!!
The Reklaws were just beginning their set when you returned with the beer. Jake lit up when he saw you squeezing through the crowd of people, meeting you halfway. He grabbed a cup from you and raised it in salute. He took a drink and made a satisfied sound.
“Thanks, babe,” he said, smiling.
You smiled softly, raising your own cup in salute before taking a drink. Making your own satisfied sound, you looked at Jake fondly when you saw him smiling at you. He looked absolutely stunning decked out in his cowboy attire. The way he had his flannel sleeves rolled up left his tattoos exposed to the concert lighting and they looked amazing.
“Like what you see?” Jake chuckled before taking another sip from his beer cup.
Smiling awkwardly, you rubbed the back of your neck. “Your tattoos look amazing under the concert lights,” you said, motioning to his arm with the hand that was holding the beer cup.
Jake lifted his arm to look at it, twisting it around a couple of times. After a moment, he lowered his arm and nodded with a soft smile on his face.
He opened his mouth to respond but anything he wanted to say never came out. The Reklaws introduced their next song which caused Jake to whip his head toward the stage. He pointed up toward the singers, looking over his shoulder at you.
“This is the World Junior song from this year!” You noticed the pride in his voice. Even though he was too old for the World Juniors at this point in his career, he was always cheering the Canadian team on. You had had to listen to this song on repeat more times than you would care to admit in the months leading up to the tournament.
“Jake,” you said, taking a sip of your beer. “I know. You played it literally every day leading up to the tournament. Then something like four times a day during the tournament.”
Even in the reduced lighting, you saw the small blush that cast itself across his face. He turned his head back toward the stage. As the song started, you managed to hear Jake’s singing above those around you. Smiling softly, you moved forward and leaned your head against him.
He's a junior
Star of his hometown team
Got the grades, got the girl, got it all so it seems
Those big game lights in his eyes
Never felt so alive, so wild, so free
Now the fall has come and gone
He's got his country colours on
He's sitting there in the drive with his dad
And he says
Jake sang along, squeezing you against him. He took another sip of his beer before leaning down and kissing your temple. You smiled softly, squeezing Jake in turn as you took a sip of your own beer.
When the stars line on up
And you finally strike gold
When the pressure's way too much
But the diamond starts to show
At that moment, Jake reached his arm in the middle of the two of you and into his pocket. You leaned away from him to allow him easier access. When he brought his hand out, he leaned down and placed his beer on the ground beside him.
When your prayers get answered
God's plan unfolds
Now don't you forget to
Make mistakes, lose your way
Get some dirt on your boots
Call your mom, write your friends
Was that worth it for you?
Remember all of them people
When your dreams come true
Now don't you forget your roots
Jake kept singing as he got down on one knee. That’s when you realized he was holding a ring in his hand—he had reached into his pocket to grab an engagement ring. You took a large drink of your beer to steady your nerves while you stared at Jake.
She has seen him
Giving his heart to the game
Every night paid the price now he's finally got a break
Calls home saying 'Mom, we've been dreaming 'bout this day.'
Tears streaming down his face
Through the phone and his momma she says
You sang that part to Jake, loving the way his face softened and seemed like it wanted to cry. You placed your beer on the ground and stepped forward. Holding your hand out; all you could do was nod at Jake.
When the stars line on up
And you finally strike gold
When the pressure's way too much
But the diamond starts to show
When your prayers get answered
God's plan unfolds
Now don't you forget to
Make mistakes, lose your way
Get some dirt on your boots
Call your mom, write your friends
Was that worth it for you?
Remember all of them people
When your dreams come true
Now don't you forget your roots
You and Jake sang in unison as he slipped the ring on your finger. When he stood, he grabbed your face in his hands and kissed you as sweetly and as passionately as he had ever kissed you. A group of people around you started cheering and clapping. You quickly tuned them out, focusing solely on kissing Jake.
Oh, now don't you forget your roots
Oh
When the stars line on up
And you finally strike gold
When the pressure's way too much
But the diamond starts to show
When your prayers get answered
God's plan unfolds
Now don't you forget to
Make mistakes, lose your way
Get some dirt on your boots
Call your mom, write your friends
Was that worth it for you?
Remember all of them people
When your dreams come true
Now don't you forget your roots, oh
Now don't you forget your roots, oh
Now don't you forget your roots
Jake held you tightly and softly sang the conclusion of the song into your hair. You hummed, content with the actions he was performing. Everything about this was perfect.
Jake may have played the song to death before you came to the concert. Hearing it at the concert made that point null and void. This was the song that started the rest of your life with Jake. It would forever be your favourite song.
Your dreams came true and you would never forget your roots.

the team’s last game had been an especially tough loss and now, with their next one over a week away, cash had taken the time off to visit his little hometown. he always had a tendency to blame himself when things went wrong on the ice and the time to clear his head was much needed. as he aimlessly wandered the old, familiar roads, he reminisced growing up there. “really didn’t know what i had back then.”

HEADCANONS
Brody Weston wanted to be a dancer, a Broadway actor, he had big dreams until everything was crushed when he realized the school he wanted and needed to attend was more expensive than he thought. Being a boy from a small town, he always worked as hard as possible to leave Montana and follow his dreams. He worked in a bar, in a groceries store, he worked everywhere to help him save money to go to NY. And that happened when he finished high school, and he decided to join NYADA.
But, all the money he saved for years was all gone in a matter of months. He was paying the rent, he was paying the food, he was paying for everything and that ended up with him trying to look for part-times in the big city of his dreams. And truth be told, it was easier than he thought. He found a job in a restaurant. But, the money he got there was not enough. He needed and wanted more and more. And that was when he decided to be a Gigolo.
As soon as he started being a Gigolo, Brody’s wallet was always full, always with good clothes, fancy clothes, luxury started to be something he wanted more than anything else. But, the school was never a second plan. He kept in mind that being a Gigolo was only part of the plan to help him with school so he could be a dance teacher. His plan was to work with kids, and that would never be forgotten.
Now that he was done with college, and he was finally working as a dance teacher in one of the most famous academies of New York, he decided that being a Gigolo was also something he loved. Nowadays you can find Brody Weston always with the fastest and most expensive cars, living in a luxury apartment in Manhattan, always looking for his new expensive gadget, as well as his next trip. Or, you can find him sleeping with the most famous and rich people from around the world.

MRS. & MR. WESTON (Parents): Ever since his parents found out about how he made his money and his life in New York , they haven’t really been on speaking terms and he finds himself ENZO, HARVEY & MILLIE WESTON (Siblings): The only people in his family that he seems to have contact with are his siblings and he is very protective of them. Although he is sure they already know what he does, he tries to hide them from it because he wants to be seen as the good guy to them. RACHEL BERRY (EX-Girlfriend): Hurting Rachel was never really what he wanted to do as she did make him happy for the first time , but due to the fact that he was not only a gigolo but hid it from her the two ended their relationship and have yet to talk since. CASSANDRA JULY (Friends with Benefits): Cassandra and Brody first started during a late night next day lesson planning and while it was only a one time thing then, it really hit off after he split with Rachel. The two use each other for obvious reasons just without the money being involved.

Northside Sessions at the Live Nation Lounge
On Wednesday night we headed to Snooker St. in Liberty Village for the Ones To Watch showcase presented by Live Nation and caught sets by The Reklaws and Sons of Daughters.
After Sons of Daughters played a great set, The Reklaws took the stage to play for the intimate crowd of fans and industry folks. After seeing Jenna and Stuart play bigger stages like the CCMA Awards, the Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone tour with Dean Brody and Dallas Smith, and their own Winter’s A Beach Tour, it was a neat throwback to see them in a small room like we did just a few years ago.
In their half an hour or so on the Live Nation Lounge stage the brother-sister duo played a six-song set before being called out for an encore that was a perfect cap on the evening of Canadian country music.
Related: Ones To Watch, Sons of Daughters Live in Toronto
youtube
The growth of The Reklaws has been fun to watch over the last seven years since they won the Emerging Artist Showcase at Boots & Hearts in 2013 and we first interviewed them in 2014. In the years that have followed that win we’ve watched them pick up CCMA wins for Rising Star (2018) and Album of the Year (2019) as well as JUNO nominations for Country Album of the Year (2019) and now a 2020 nomination for Group of the Year. The recognition of their hard work and success is lovely to see, and this 2020 JUNO nom is also big for Canadian country music, marking the first time in more than 20 years that a country act has been nominated in the all-genres category.
They’ve also had their first #1 single in that time with Feels Like That, which they played to open their set on Wednesday night. They followed it up with a fan favourite, Wish You Were Beer, telling stories about the writing of the song as they sang it. And by the time they moved into Old Country Soul with their third song we were in a rhythm of fans singing along and even carrying parts of every song.
It’s become pretty clear to anyone paying attention, The Reklaws are stars.

We do want to note that The Reklaws were not originally scheduled to perform on Wednesday night at the Northside Sessions. Unfortunately, their pal and labelmate, Jade Eagleson was unable to make the trip to Toronto from Calgary due to an illness, so Jenna and Stuart stepped in. We’re sending healing vibes to Jade and look forward to seeing him with Chad Brownlee on the Forever’s Gotta Start Somewhere Tour.
Related: Jade Eagleson 2020 Preview, Interview & 5 Quick Questions
Before the end of the set with Long Live The Night and then an encore performance of Hometown Kids, The Reklaws played two new songs for the small Toronto crowd. Beer Can and Where I’m From were fun additions to the show. And the invested crowd was a great testing ground for the tracks. Getting audience participation wasn’t a problem, getting into a groove with the songs seemed easy, and we won’t be surprised to hear them both again later in 2020.
The Reklaws’ tour calendar for 2020 has yet to be filled in publicly, so we’re not sure exactly where we’ll catch them. They will be headlining Lucan Baconfest in July – but as of right now, that’s the only show listed on their website. Keep an eye on their social media channels and thereklaws.com to stay up to date when more shows are added.

It’s not often that major tours, of any kind, stop in North Bay, being relatively close to Sudbury makes most tours bypass the Gateway city. That wasn’t the case for Dean Brody’s Beautiful Freakshow Tour and country fans in North Bay wasted no time showing Dean that they appreciated him choosing to visit their hometown!
James Barker Band

The show opened with the lively James Barker Band. The Universal Music Canada signed group put on a phenomenal show to start the evening and got the crowd into the mood for good times on a Tuesday night.
The boys started things up with their own tracks including “Lawn Chair Lazy” and mixed in a lil Rage Against the Machine, Eminem and the legendary Stevie Wonder’s “Superstitious” to keep things interesting. This was a nice mix of country and some classics of a few different genres demonstrating the band’s diversity.

A magnificent showing including 3 top 10 Canadian Country Chart hitting songs and more sure to raise them to the top. The 2015 Boots and Hearts pick for emerging artist based here out of Ontario had this wonderfully diverse age group really well entertained. With their debut EP Game On freshly released less than a month ago and already starting its way up the charts these boys are deemed for some great things in the future.

When Dean Brody and his band hit the stage Dean kicked things off by ripping off his chaps centre stage and the crowd went wild. Dean and the band put on an incredible live show that kept the crowd moving in their seats and the aisles of the Capitol Centre all night long.

The Beautiful Freakshow tour is definitely a must see for all music fans. The stage was full of life and I can definitely see why his live show is so highly talked about by everyone who sees him. The lighting and movement on the stage matching the music beautifully. The change of pace as well when they all sat together to make it all seem a little more personal as well as playing the crowd as he ran out into the isles to excite the fans even more.
It was a most enjoyable evening spent listening to some of the best live music I have heard in a long time. I was thrilled to attend this show and look forward to seeing both James Barker and Dean Brody again in the future. Special thanks to Jones Entertainment Group for bringing this show to North Bay and inviting us to cover the show for Sound Check Entertainment.
Dean and the boys of James Barker Band head west where Madeline Merlo will join the tour as direct support for Dean Brody, the tour wraps up in Calgary on June 3. You can find full tour details here: Dean Brody’s Beautiful Freakshow Tour 2017 Dates Released

The Canadian country music tradition of taking over Budweiser Stage continued on Saturday night in Toronto when Dean Brody and Dallas Smith brought their friends to the amphitheatre by the lake for a great night of music.
For the third year in a row, Brody came to the Bud Stage, but this time things were bigger than ever. The co-headlining stop with Smith on their Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone run also included Chad Brownlee, MacKenzie Porter, CCMA Album of the Year winners The Reklaws, and emerging American star Jimmie Allen. In past years we’ve had surprise guests, and while we didn’t get any surprises on Saturday night, there was so much talent and so much action, that it didn’t feel like anything was missing. The dynamics of such a long list of artists could have been confusing and disjointed, but it wasn’t. Everything moved smoothly and with the energy needed to keep thousands of country fans involved and invested all night long.

The show started with The Reklaws on the big stage. Jenna and Stuart Walker came out and opened with energy and excitement. It was a big moment for the country music siblings, getting on the Bud Stage for the first time in a career that continues to be best described as exploding. They’ve topped the charts, been featured on TSN, headlined their own tour, and played some great stages. But on Saturday they got to cross something big off of their to-do list as they smiled and danced and sang all over the stage.
We’ve been fortunate to follow The Reklaws over the last few years as they’ve grown as artists, embraced opportunities, and become one of the most celebrated young acts in Canadian country music. And we aren’t alone. We watched as fans sang along to Hometown Kids, Feels Like That (the duo’s first #1 single at Canadian country radio), and Long Live The Night to close out their brief set. It was great to see, and next time we’re sure they’ll get even more space and time to show the fans what they can do on the big stage.

Next on the big stage, and the hands-down winner for best dressed on the night, was Jimmie Allen. The small-town singer from Delaware brought flash, dance, and swag with his country music, and Toronto was into it. Allen was all-in during his seven-song set. With tracks from his breakout album, Mercury Lane, plus a couple of bonuses that we loved, there was a lot to write home about from this set.
Note: We would like to extend our best wishes and love to Jimmie Allen and his family as they mourn the loss of his father. Jimmie made the trip to play in Toronto just a couple of days after his daddy passed, and we know that it had to have been weighing heavy on his heart.
Allen played his #1 hit Best Shot. He played his current radio single, Make Me Want To. He threw in County Lines to start the set and Underdogs to end it. But when Jimmie Allen grabbed his guitar and started singing Shallow, he had everyone’s attention. And when he went into an upper register that we didn’t know he had, we were floored, impressed, blown away, and then some. This is the second time we’ve seen Jimmie Allen live (Boots & Hearts 2018) and we very much hope we get to see him again soon.

Now, this is where things got big and exciting and special. Dean Brody and Dallas Smith and both of their bands (10 musicians combined) came out on the stage together to kick off their co-headlining set. There were loud cheers and a buzz at the amphitheatre that only comes in big moments. Brody and Smith started the set with duet versions of If It Gets You Where You Wanna Go, Undone, Somebody Somewhere, and Love Would Be Enough. It was cool to see the two big Canadian stars trade verses on each other’s songs and made for a great start to the second half of the night.
After the mini-set of duets, Smith and his band left the stage and Dean Brody and the Brodeo broke into an eleven song run. The Toronto crowd was treated to (and sang along with) newer material and old favourites with Bush Party, Whiskey In A Tea Cup, Black Sheep, and of course, Canadian Girls all getting the fans worked up in the best way. As a songwriter, Dean Brody is in the upper echelon of the genre. As a performer, he takes those songs and connects them to the crowd with enthusiasm and genuine joy.

Dean Brody’s set ended with the introduction of one of Canada’s next emerging stars, MacKenzie Porter. As Bounty started playing and Dean started singing, it made perfect sense for Porter to come down the steps and sing the part that Lindi Ortega recorded on the #1 single. The pair sounded fantastic together, the crowd welcomed MacKenzie with a nice cheer, and the show just kept on rolling.
After Bounty, Dean Brody exited the stage and MacKenzie Porter stayed. The Alberta native (and star of Travelers) introduced herself and played her latest single, These Days for Toronto. We wish that she had the chance to play another song before she split, maybe her own #1 single, About You. But the opportunity for her to get on the big stage in front of thousands of Canadian country music fans is one that she deserves and can only help her as she takes the next steps in her music career.
What came next was a little bit of a surprise because we didn’t get a duet or natural segue. But none of that mattered because when Chad Brownlee appeared and started singing, the crowd got loud with welcoming cheers and excitement to see him. Like Porter, the BC native’s time on stage was short, but we did get to sing along with him as he sang When The Lights Go Down and his first career #1 single, Forever’s Gotta Start Somewhere.

As Chad enters a new chapter in his career with the release of his EP Back In The Game, a new label, and an eye on new opportunities, he continues to be the artist that Canadian country fans have loved for a decade. He is no longer the guy that traded his skates for a stage. Chad Brownlee is a fixture on the Canadian country music scene, a top-tier male artist, and we can’t wait to see what else is coming from him in the future.
After Brownlee went back-to-back, the 2019 CCMA Entertainer of the Year, Dallas Smith came back out to the stage and showed everyone exactly why he took that trophy home with him.
Smith and the band played 12 songs in their set, inviting MacKenzie Porter to come back out to duet on One Drink Ago. They rolled through #1 singles Drop, Wastin’ Gas, Sky Stays This Blue, Autograph, Side Effects, and Rhinestone World. They played favourites like Lifted and One Little Kiss and Tippin’ Point. And through it all, Dallas moved around the stage. The crowd sang loud and with enthusiasm. And the Budweiser Stage turned into Smith’s house.

Two years ago Dallas Smith was Dean Brody’s surprise guest and sang Undone with him and then played Somebody Somewhere to huge cheers. This year, the cheers were just as loud, and Dallas Smith took full advantage of his entire time on the Budweiser Stage. It was awesome to see the superstar singer get that opportunity and make the most of it.
After Smith wrapped his set with Side Effects, we got to the encore as the co-headlining friends were wheeled out with the Friends Bar.
Dean and Dallas again took turns singing and sharing songs. They started with Brody’s Time and then Smith playing the Default classic, Wasting My Time before welcoming MacKenzie Porter and Chad Brownlee back out to sing Friends Don’t Let Friends Drink Alone with them.
With time winding down on Saturday night Dean Brody and Dallas Smith had two songs left. The night closed on Smith’s Cheap Seats and then Brody’s Bring Down The House – and it was perfect. It was loud and happy and there was as much energy at the end of the encore as there was at the start of the show.
September 21 was the last Saturday of summer 2019, and at Budweiser Stage in Toronto, thousands of country music fans had the perfect end to the season with Dean Brody, Dallas Smith, Chad Brownlee, MacKenzie Porter, The Reklaws, Jimmie Allen and the Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone.
