Questlove’s new custom Classic Maple kit hits the bandstand this week over at the Tonight Show. It debuted a few weeks back during a powerful performance by De La Soul backed up by The Roots. We transformed the daisy motif from De La Soul’s first album into drum wrap thanks to our friend FWMJ. Proud to celebrate the legacy and influence of De La Soul on a set of our drums. #LudwigDrums #delasoul #TheRoots #questlove #hiphop

Name a better 4 album run… I’ll WAIT! Each album shifted the momentum of hip hop culture in its own way. All 4 are certified CLASSICS! 3 Feet High: woke up all the kids like myself that enjoyed blerd culture + were artists deep down and loved that they combined timeless music mixed with comedy and smart lyrics and a unique STYLE! De La is Dead: from jump let us know you’re entering an alternative universe so hang on tight (because we wanna swat the people who only liked “me myself and I” and misunderstood what “Da.I.s.Y Age” really meant off the train! The story book with the artwork and proving you could be different and still make hits. Buhloone: (my fave De La album) put folks on notice that they are the best Emcee’s and they lowkey influenced how me and mine dressed + carried ourselves it had us dive even deeper into our artistic selves. The song ‘I Am I Be’ is FLAWLESS imo and I think De La’s most important (if not best) song. Stakes: This album to me changed my whole thought process (again) + let me know that they can buck the current trends but at the same time better those trends (those J DILLA beats PROVED this!) and it gave more guidance that substance and art are STILL important and you can still follow those yet let the gun toters know that “we will still bust your a**es with these mic’s” without having to be fake “tough guys”. Each album aged profoundly and we watched them grow not only as artists but as men and they as a group raised the best generation. If you doubt me then go look at the kids of true De La Soul fans. They’ll most likely be the most well rounded + kindest kids in the friend group. To me De La has NEVER had a bad album or showed any signs of slipping even in todays musical mindset. They are one of the few timeless artists of my lifetime. They are MY Beatles and ATCQ are My Rolling Stones (or is it vice-versa?) Meaning they’ve never lost their staying power and have continued to have a great impact to millions of music fans. IG limits the text so I can’t go DEEP but @danteross put the idea in my head asking “best 4 album run?” De La Soul hands down! Thank you Dave, Pos & Maseo! #delasoul #thankyoudave (at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqHL_aPp-Xb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

In around 1992. The cute illustration (by Joe Buck) record that my sister found at a secondhand clothing store in Amemura:youngster's area in Osaka, was a "Saturday" single of them De La Soul. I didn't have a record player at my home yet, and it was one of the two records that my sister bought to decorate the room. The other was a house music vinyl of a group called Bomb The Bass. After a while, I found a red plastic record player (built-in speaker) that was thrown away in the neighborhood, so when I picked it up and came back, it worked, so the two records that were in the house that had no information yet I tried to put it on. I'm sure the speaker was broken, the sound came out very low, so I thought that the volume would increase if I pressed the record needle hard. This was how I bumped into De La Soul music with full of scratches on the vinyls groove. A few years later, I was amazed by the unique sampling and visuals of the revolutionary album "3 Feet High and Rising" and when I heard "Buhloone Mindstate" with the participation of Schadarapper (SDP) and Kan Takagi, I felt it was not wrong to do hip-hop as a Japanese through the depth of De La's love. Dave's death at this time, when he was about to stream all the albums that were De La's hope for many years in March, can't help but want to get more into their wonderful music and messages. They are not afraid to be different from other people, I'm encouraged by that figure, and again now. This world is full of love, and there are a lot of fun things, and they showed me a lot of sense of noticing it. The sound is always innovative, but their live is soulful and party! A generous and true hip-hop artist trio that embraces all the people there with happiness. Three people who were born from the soul (De La Soul). I love De La Soul is not dead. forever and ever. Trugoy the Dove, Mr.Dave. Rest in peace. @wearedelasoul @plugwondelasoul @inmaseowetrust #Trugoy #DeLaSoul #DeLaSoulIsNotDead https://www.instagram.com/p/CooAXkoyP04/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

RIP Trugoy being an awkward Black kid growing up, DeLaSoul and PM Dawn made everything feel so right❤️🙏🏾 —————————————————— De La Soul’s David Jolicoeur, Who Rapped as Trugoy the Dove, Dies at 54 The trio expanded the stylistic vocabulary of hip-hop in the 1980s and ’90s, but its early experiments with sampling led to legal troubles, and the group’s longtime exclusion from streaming. David Jolicoeur of De La Soul, the rap trio that expanded the stylistic vocabulary of hip-hop in the late 1980s and early ’90s with eclectic samples and offbeat humor, becoming MTV staples and cult heroes of the genre, died on Sunday. He was 54. His death was confirmed by the group’s publicist, Tony Ferguson, who did not specify a cause or say where Mr. Jolicoeur was when he died. In recent years, Mr. Jolicoeur has openly discussed a struggle with congestive heart failure, including in a music video for the group’s song “Royalty Capes De La Soul arrived with the album “3 Feet High and Rising” in 1989, a time when hip-hop was still relatively new to the mainstream. The genre’s public face was often confrontational, with groups like Public Enemy and N.W.A speaking out about the racism, police violence and neglect faced by Black communities in America. By contrast, De La Soul — three middle-class young men from Long Island — presented themselves with hippie floral designs and a music video set in a high school for their song “Me Myself and I.” The group wore baggy, brightly colored clothes, to the sneers and side-eyeing of their classmates in gold chains, black shades and matching B-boy outfits. #DeLaSoul @wearedelasoul @plugwondelasoul 🕊️❤️🙏🏾 https://www.instagram.com/p/ColUQAmLMdJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

After Years Of Roadblocks, De La Soul’s Music Is Finally Coming To Streaming Services In 2023 [Video]

With a platinum plaque, two gold records, and a Grammy Award to their names, you would think rap trio De La Soul’s catalog would be available for enjoyment across streaming platforms. But, unfortunately for the Library Of Congress inductees, due to several legal issues — including potential earning disputes with their record label, Tommy Boy — emcees Posdnuos (real name Kelvin Mercer), Trugoy (real name David Jude Jolicoeur), and Maseo (real name Vincent Lamont Mason Jr.) never signed off on the agreement.

“We can’t believe this day is finally here,” the band said in a statement, “and we are excited to be able to share our music with fans, old and new”.De La Soul’s Posdnuos explained the hold up during an interview with BBC in 2016.“Our contracts on those early albums said specifically ‘vinyl and cassette,’” he said. “The wording wasn’t vague enough to lend itself to [new] music technology.”He continued: “So once the whole age of digital music came into play, new deals needed to be cut for those entire albums.”All-in-all, Posdnuos says that Warner Bros. “just don’t want to deal with it.”“They’re like, ‘Is it worth it?’ They’ve got to go through almost every song with a fine comb to make sure this sample or that sample was cleared. It’s been a very lengthy, draining process.”The group released 3 Feet High and Rising back in March 1989. The album features many of De La Soul’s biggest songs including “Me Myself and I”, “The Magic Number”, “Buddy”, and “Eye Know.” It’s frequently cited as one of the best rap albums of all time. In 2010, the Library of Congress’ National Recording
Registry deemed it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
As for when specifically De La Soul’s music will be available, the group announced on social media that March 3, 2023 is the date. Check out their announcement below on Twitter.

Salute to my brother from another mother @misterstovetop for this design. He’s also a fellow @wearedelasoul Supa fan. We kept texting back and forth on De La Day: “What song are you on right now?” “I’m on this song, and you?” We were super music nerds and listened to the albums in chronological order. (Anyone else nerd out like us?) We’ve been talking about De La Day since we heard they got their masters back and are gonna re-release them. We were more geeked about this than the day that De La released ALL their music for free. Because we knew that the ENTIRE world was about to witness the art of the Supa Emcees. Plus feel the vibrations of the Native Tongues movement. As Dave Chappelle eloquently put it. “De La Soul were the Big Bang to a lot of beautiful sh!t.” They were and they raised us and as I look around and I see my friends grown with their own families and STILL holding those vibes to heart and raising their kids on those same waves it lets me know…. That De La raised us right! The native tongues raised us right. Think about all the people that chose art and their nerdy creative side and spent their money “on equipment, necessities AND VIDEO GAAAAAAAAAAAMES!!!” (If you know where that’s from you’re a true De La fan.) I truly hope that the world ALSO see’s what they’ve meant to us and they share those same things that we learned from their art with the people around them and in turn pass down those vibrations to others. The world NEEDS more De La Soul and Native Tongues in it. I want to know who’s gonna produce the 3 day Native Tongues festival? All those NT artists and the ones of todays current music realm that they feel represent those same vibes. I think it could be blockbuster. Ok, going back to listen to more De La and native tongues family. Everyone share them with everyone around you it’ll make the earth a better place. Thanks again to De La Soul for the art Rest in beats Dave Long live De La Soul 🖖🏽 To my brother + fellow Supa fan thank you. “Plug 1 Plug 2 …Plug Tunin” acrylic, mixed media on wood panel ‘And now for my next number I'd like to return to the classics Perhaps the most famous classic In all the world of music’ Before “Plug Tunin’” wound up on the demo that landed De La Soul a deal with Tommy Boy Records and eventually served as their breakout single in 1988, the song began as a live act performed over a famous breakbeat. “We would do it off of The Honey Drippers’ ‘Impeach The President,’” Maseo explained in a 2014 interview with Vibe magazine. “Somehow we started to make a conceptual song, but it really didn’t become much of anything until Pos found a sample.” While Posdnuos is the one who found the sample that ended up serving as a backbone for the song’s instrumental, he credits two pioneering rap groups for inspiring the original dynamics of the track. “In the beginning ‘Plug Tunin’’ was really a routine,” he told Vibe. “Being young, we were still taking a lot of lessons from groups like Cold Crush Brothers and Crash Crew.” Cold Crush Brothers and Crash Crew informed the initial live version, but it was a Pos’ copy of The Invitations’ “Written On The Wall” that sparked the version of “Plug Tunin’” people know and love today — as well as the song’s name. “Funny enough, on the b-side of ‘Written On The Wall’, it said Plug Side,” Pos told Vibe. “So that’s the only reason we titled it “Plug Tunin.’” “We thought the intro was hilarious, so we just threw it on at the beginning of the song. Like everything else we did, there wasn’t much rhyme or reason to it.” — Prince Paul Article credit 📰 - Gino Sorcinelli > www.medium.com news #theartofshawnartis #delasoul #plugtunin #art #music #hiphop #80s #contemporaryart #culture #princepaul #houston #houstonartist #ARTisTheImitationOfLife (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTnnXHKreMP/?utm_medium=tumblr
