Top 10 Things to See and Do in Amsterdam
Living on a houseboat has always been a wild dream of mine. That’s why Amsterdam, a city built around a network of canals over six feet below sea level, captures my heart. There’s even a houseboat there just for cats, De Poezenboot! With over 165 canals stretching 60 miles, you could explore the capital of the Netherlands without traversing the same waterway twice. It’s a small city with just…

Welcome at the Catboat
The Catboat is the one and only animal sanctuary that literally floats. A refuge for stray and abandoned cats which, thanks to its unique location on a houseboat in Amsterdam's picturesque canal belt, has also become a place where people want to go.
Water and cats...
Most cats hate water. But ours learn to love living on it. After all, we have been keeping their feet dry since 1968.
Since that time the Catboat has developed into a modern and professional sanctuary providing tender loving care to countless cats.
On this site you can find out how we came to be here and the rest of our history. You will also meet some of our cats. And, as well as this virtual introduction, you can find details of where and when you can visit us for real!
Entrance is free, but with a donation you make the cats and us very happy. We do not receive any subsidy. it sounds cliché, but it's true: without your donation and support we wouldn't stay afloat! Nowadays, you have to book a day and time online on our website. We hope to see you soon.

A Playful Police Cat Goes on Paw Patrol Each Morning in Amsterdam
Sharing is caring! Amsterdam is certainly an ameowzing place for cat lovers! Everywhere you look, you’ll find cats in beautiful places and doing unexpected things. For example, we shared the story of De Poezenboot, a rescue for cats for over 55 years. But these cats live on a boat! There are gorgeous cats everywhere, peeking from windows, […]

Ahoy, cat lovers! Take a look at this shelter, the only one like it in the world- De Poezenboot cat houseboat shelter. It all started in 1966 with one lady who lived on a houseboat, and adopted a cat with kittens.
Stray cats are taken care of and live on the water until they’re adopted.
This is Miss Rigby, she’s 1 of about 8 permanent residents.
One day, the real Puss ‘n Boots visited.
People can visit to just pet the cats or adopt. What a cool shelter.
Not a bad place to wait for a furever home.
Love this idea.

Solo Flight
May 2019 brings me back to Amsterdam, but this time, by myself. I have always wanted to take a solo trip somewhere, but the deal my husband and I had is that I couldn’t go somewhere he hasn’t been before, first so he didn’t get jealous and second so he didn’t have to worry about me being somewhere unfamiliar by myself (but it’s mostly so he didn’t get jealous!). I have been to many business trips by myself, so it’s not necessarily the first time I’m travelling solo, but it is my first solo trip for fun.
I was in Amsterdam for six days. I revisited my favourite places like the Van Gogh Museum and Vondelpark, but this time around, I got to visit other places that I’ve always wanted but never had a chance, like Anne Frank House and the De Poezenboot (The Cat Boat). I ate a few slices of Apple Pie at Winkel 43 (and brought some home for good measure), sipped wine along the canal, went on a couple of canal tours and dined solo at a Michelin starred restaurant. I also took a day tour to see the windmills at Zaanse Schans and the town of Volendam. I rented a room in Jordaan with this lovely couple and their two cats, and my room overlooked a canal and I was literally a stone’s throw away from Winkel. Staying in Jordaan was a dream come true for me.
There were aspects of solo travel that I quite enjoyed. I didn’t have to worry about time – I woke up whenever I wanted, I sat at a bar for as long as I wanted, I stared at Sunflowers and Almond Blossom for two hours and did not have to worry about missing Golden Hour or Blue Hour. I got to eat whatever I felt like, and I didn’t have to share my Apple Pie! Travelling solo was very empowering to me and made me realize how fortunate I was not only as a solo female traveler, but also as a person, to be able to travel solo with freedom and without fear.
There were times that I missed having my travel partner in crime, though. I’m not very good at striking up conversations with strangers, so I pretty much just had myself for company for five whole days. My brain on vacation isn’t such bad company, but I don’t know how much longer I would have been able to tolerate myself. The meal at MOS was the worst because it was three hours of enjoying this amazing meal, but I didn’t have my husband there to share it with, knowing that he would have really enjoyed it as well. I also have problems falling asleep by myself in a strange bed, so I never really got over jet lag the entire time I was there. I would fall asleep at 4am and wake up at 10am, and I was so happy to be home at the end and have a restful sleep.
Would I do it again? If I absolutely had to, yes. I would never say no to travelling, and if the only option is for me to go by myself, then yes, I would go. However, I don’t think I’ll do it again by choice. I think at the end of the day, traveling for me, is enjoying the experience of learning about a new culture, and trying new food, and seeing the world with my partner in crime, and as long as we are both alive and able to travel, then I think I would prefer travelling with him going forward. I think as we learn more about what each of us enjoys while traveling, we are finding ways to compromise and do our own solo thing within a trip, and still enjoy the trip as partners.
