Chelsea Grin Drop Off Motionless In White Tour Due To Health Concerns, Like Moths To Flames Set To Fill In

After only one show into Motionless In White’s North Amercian headliner, Salt Lake City deathcore act Chelsea Grin have just announced they will be dropping off the tour due to health concerns from vocalist Alex Koehler.

The band released the following statement to their fans:

To our fans,

We are entirely gutted to so suddenly inform you that we will need to drop off of the Motionless in White Graveyard Shift North American tour. In this situation, we feel the need to be entirely honest. It may or may not have been apparent, but for a while now Alex Koehler has been in declining health and has been unable to surmount the rigors of being on the road. He is currently under medical care, making good progress and improving daily. Initially, the rest of us were determined to make this tour happen and deliver to you the best Chelsea Grin experience we could, even without Alex. We arrived home from tracking our upcoming record with only two full days to work and as soon as we shifted our focus from the record and geared up for the run, we knew we were unprepared. Beyond just a rushed rehearsal schedule, we’ve found ourselves very concerned with taking the stage in our current state. The duress of this album process and being so sick/conflicted for our brother has driven us each to a compromised and unsustainable mental and emotional position. When we consider the longevity of our band, this is the only choice. We’ve waited so long to play for North America again, but cannot in good conscience return to deliver a performance that is not representative of the band at our best. Again, we are so deeply apologetic that we will not be able to accompany our brothers in Motionless in White, Every Time I Die and Ice Nine Kills, and even more so that we will not be performing for or engaging with our fans. We are so grateful to our crew for their unending support and understanding, and to Davier Perez for working so hard stepping in for Pablo while he would have filled in for Alex.

It is very important for you to know that we are taking our situation head-on. We have a record that we are supremely confident and excited in (with the expert assistance of Drew Fulk and Joshua Travis), and are as committed as ever to furthering our music and the relationship we have with our supporters. Thank you all for your understanding, and we will be seeing you soon.

In place of Chelsea Grin, fellow Rise Records act Like Moths To Flames will be filling in starting February 27 in Clive, Iowa.

Bridging both genres are the über hit makers like Stargate, Ester Dean, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin.

There have been swings in popular taste over Clive Davis’s career. The pure pop center he aims for has periodically been purged by new, edgier styles, which, in turn, eventually become absorbed into the mainstream too, usually on a ten-year cycle.

Grammar and usage didn’t matter much to Denniz, and wit and metaphor, Brill Building staples, aren’t even in the picture. “I think it was to our advantage that English was not our mother language,” Ekberg says, “because we are able to treat English very respectless, and just look for the word that sounded good with the melody.” Freed from making sense, the lyricists’ horizons are boundless.

Savan Kotecha, who co-wrote with Max Martin “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love,” a number-one smash, and apprenticed in the Cheiron songwriting method, thinks this quality is uniquely Swedish. “With the Swedish people, what is expected to happen is going to happen,” he says. “A Swede will not let you down, and neither do their songs. If you expect the song to blow here, it will blow here, and if you expect it to be chill there, it’s chill there.”

Track-and-hook is more conducive to factory-style song production. Producers can create batches of tracks all at one time, and then e-mail the MP3s around to different topliners. It is common practice for a producer to send the same track to multiple topliners—in extreme cases, as many as fifty—and choose the best melody from among the submissions.

In the melody-and-lyrics approach to songwriting, a song generally begins with a melody, or with lyrics, and a rough sketch of the song is worked out by the composers before the production is done. In track-and-hook, the production comes first, and then melody and words are added. Often producers are not looking for a single melody to carry the song, but rather just enough melody to flesh out the production. That’s why producers generally speak of a song’s “melodies” rather than its melody.

As a working method, track-and-hook tends to make songs sound the same.

Hook writing tends to encourage a “first thought, best thought” approach to songwriting. Inspiration, not perspiration, is the order of the day. Since producers generally have a batch of tracks already prepared, like doughnuts ready for the honey glaze, topliners needn’t labor over any one track for long. If inspiration doesn’t strike quickly, move on to the next track and begin anew. It might require twenty tracks to yield one recordable song, but that is an acceptable percentage for most songwriting teams.

Whether or not this method makes for better songs, it certainly yields more of them, and allows the creators to enjoy a (possibly illusory) sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.

Stargate had achieved with “Rude Boy” what the Swedes, for all their melodic gifts, were never able to pull off: a perfect hybrid of Nordic and urban. It marked the start of a hot streak that would bring the duo such smashes as “Firework,” “Only Girl (In the World,)” and “S&M”—all collaborations with Ester Dean.
