You frown, tilting your head to the side.
“Eh? You don’t get what I’m trying to say? ...Really?”
You shake your head.
“I mean, if you take some kind of drug, it’ll ruin the taste of your delicious blood! Are you going to take them regardless?”
You nod.
[03:04] “Huuuh~? Don’t you love me, Bitch-chan?”
You insist that you do love him.
“Then you know what to do, don’t you?”
You hesitate.
“You do, right?”
You look away.

He snatches it from your hands and goes to throw it in the trash bin.

[03:52] “...Who knows what will happen to you if you take some weird pills right now…This isn’t a joke after all. ーー Junk goes into the trash bin! What a relief~! ...Listen carefully. I don’t want to have to drink blood which tastes of some kind of drug. Remember that, okay?”
You frown.
[04:18] “Why are you giving me that look? I’m saying all of this for your sake, you know? Don’t you think it’s strange to rely on some medicine when I’m here for you? You really are such an airhead. ーー Or is there something you want to tell me, perhaps? Then fess up already. I’m willing to listen. Come on, hurry.”
You mutter.
“...Say that one more time? Whose sake are you doing this for?”
You repeat yourself.
[05:06] “Oh dear~? Did you say my name just now? Twice, even! When did I ask for you to do this, exactly? I can’t seem to recall~? Don’t you think you’re getting a little ahead of yourself right now, using me to justify your own behavior like that?”
You apologize and correct yourself.
[05:31] “Nfu~ I’m glad! You seem to have some brain cells left in that head of yours at least! (2) Well then, shall we go home? We can head straight back to the manor today so you can rest up, okay, Bitch-chan?”
The two of you leave the infirmary.

You explain.

If she’s acting up again, I’m sure it’d be exhausting for you as well...and could cause discomfort as well, don’t you think?”
You admit to not having thought of that possibility yet.
[06:45] “Shouldn’t that be the first thing to come to mind? Your heart isn’t normal after all. If she’s the one behind this, you would only be wasting your time and energy by trying to fix it yourself. You have no other choice but to wait and see.”
You frown.
[07:07] “Anyway, why don’t you hit the hay early tonight? I won’t drink your blood either. I’m such a gentleman, aren’t I? Nfu~”

(2) 分別 or ‘funbetsu’ can mean various things from ‘good sense’ to ‘good judgement’ or even ‘wisdom’. In this case, I assume Laito means that she at least knew how to adjust her answer rather than upsetting him further.

Writing suicidal characters
CW/TW: mentions suicide, suicidal tendencies, symptoms, s3lf-harm, trauma in general.
Suicide isn't an easy topic to write about and it's still extremely stigmatized and not really talked about. I have never experienced suicidal thoughts, but I've researched as much as I can about the topic and I hope it gives some clarity to y'all.
#1. Their backstory
Normally, other mental illnesses are present of which suicidal thoughts and ideation are a symptom of, such as depression. It's important to know the root cause, research it, and portray it in a manner that doesn't glorify it at all. What caused their root illness? What trauma affected them to this degree?
#2. Don't make 'being suicidal' their entire personality
A person who suffers from suicidal ideation isn't sad or contemplates k!ll!ng themself all the time. It's a huge part of their life, and something they should be getting help for, but that doesn't mean they don't have a personality, friends, family, hobbies, or a life in general. Some days are better than others, and other days are extremely bad.
#3. Some habits that your character may have
Increased usage of alcohol and/or drugs
Being reckless
Being apathetic
Sometimes experiencing mood swings
Having a very low opinion of themself
Surprised whenever someone says that they love them/miss them
#4. Showing them healing
Like most mental illnesses healing from suicidal ideation isn't linear. But with therapy, medication, and spending time with friends and family - they can gradually get better. There is no 'aha' moment that gives your character a renewed will to live - it's gradual and slow, like most things.
#5. Know their triggers
Depending on what caused their slide into suicidal ideation - your characters will have triggers. Some common reactions to getting triggered would be:
A panic/anxiety attack
Negative self-talk, feeling a lot of self-loathing and self-hatred
Feeling an acute sense of despair as if the world is ending
Wanting to be left alone
Getting overstimulated
Attempting s3lf-harm
#6. A totem
A lot of people use a totem - not sure if that's the actual word, but it's something that helps keeps them grounded. It might just be listening to a certain musical piece again and again, or reciting a few lines of poetry, or even a certain object that brings them comfort.
Suicide is a heavy topic, but that doesn't mean it can't be written about. The more awareness is raised, the more people will talk about it - and the more people will be able to ask for help. One example of a well-written suicidal character is Dazai Osamu from Bungou Stray Dogs - he jokes about k!lling himself and his friends call him a 'suicidal maniac' at times, but through subtle ways, we see how much his depression affects him.

Analyzing Social Climb (pt.1)
K, so after finally getting back home and having actual WIFI in here, i decided to watch social climb again in its entirety and express some of my thoughts and observations i guess? Anyways lets go
The video starts with a 10-Second long animation of the band´s logo, and directly moves over to the visuals of a fancy-looking house. Over it, there is a bit of text and a headline:

Now, let´s try and analyse this :D
What is Telefoundation?
On the internet, i wasnt able to find any mentions of the word, let alone a definition of the word, so i assumed it was the name of a fictional firm in the iDKHOW universe But, i was able to find a similar word, “early television foundation” and also a link to something else here: http://www.cftf.org.uk/ if you want to take a look at that. The first one tho, it is a museum “dedicated to the preservation of the technology from the early days of television.“, as directly quoted from their website.
Furthermore, the website says: “Our website's mission is to preserve and make available to the public the history of early television, from the mechanical systems of the 1920s through the introduction of color televsion in the 1950s.“
Aha, so that museum just showcases different TVs from around 1945, how´s that connected to social climb and idkhow? I dont have an idea, but we know that the mv for social climb is a brainwashing propaganda video from 1977, broadcasted over television.
What is Thought Reform?
thought reform is another word for brainwashing used by Robert Jay Lifton, one of the first phsychologists to study both brainwashing and mindcontrol. Lifton was a US-american phsychatrist and author in the 60s. 1970 he was accepted as a teacher at washington school of psychatry. Later, he released his books called “Home from the War: Vietnam Veterans. Neither Victims nor Executioners (1973), and The Nazi Doctors: Medical Killing and the Psychology of Genocide” (1986), of which the publishing years bring us near to the time in which the iDKHOW story takes place.
returning back to ´thought reform´, Lifton offered 8 steps/methods of manipulating minds. I have copied them off http://changingminds.org/techniques/conversion/lifton_thought_reform.htm for anybody interested:
#1 Milieu control
All communication with outside world is limited, either being strictly filtered or completely cut off. Whether it is a monastery or a behind-closed-doors cult, isolation from the ideas, examples and distractions of the outside world turns the individuals attention to the only remaining form of stimulation, which is the ideology that is being inculcated in them.
This even works at the intrapersonal level, and individuals are discouraged from thinking incorrect thoughts, which may be termed evil, selfish, immoral and so on.
#2 Mystical manipulation
A part of the teaching is that the group has a higher purpose than others outside the group. This may be altruistic, such as saving the world or helping people in need. It may also be selfish, for example that group members will be saved when others outside the group will perish.
All things are then attributed and linked to this higher purpose. Coincidences (which actually may be deliberately engineered) are portrayed as symbolic events. Attention is given to the problems of out-group people and attributed to their not being in the group. Revelations are attributed to spiritual causes.
This association of events is used as evidence that the group truly is special and exclusive.
#3 Confession
Individuals are encouraged to confess past 'sins' (as defined by the group). This creates a tension between the person's actions and their stated belief that the action is bad, particularly if the statement is made publicly. The consistency principle thus leads the person to fully adopt the belief that the sin is bad and to distance themselves from repeating it.
Discussion of inner fears and anxieties, as well as confessing sins is exposing vulnerabilities and requires the person to place trust in the group and hence bond with them. When we bond with others, they become our friends, and we will tend to adopt their beliefs more easily.
This effect may be exaggerated with intense sessions where deep thoughts and feelings are regularly surfaced. This also has the effect of exhausting people, making them more open to suggestion.
#4 Self-sanctification through purity
Individuals are encouraged to constantly push towards an ultimate and unattainable perfection. This may be rewarded with promotion within the group to higher levels, for example by giving them a new status name (acolyte, traveller, master, etc.) or by giving them new authority within the group.
The unattainability of the ultimate perfection is used to induce guilt and show the person to be sinful and hence sustain the requirement for confession and obedience to those higher than them in the groups order of perfection.
Not being perfect may be seen as deserving of punishment, which may be meted out by the higher members of the group or even by the person themselves, who are taught that such atonement and self-flagellation is a valuable method of reaching higher levels of perfection.
#5 Aura of sacred science
The beliefs and regulations of the group are framed as perfect, absolute and non-negotiable. The dogma of the group is presented as scientifically correct or otherwise unquestionable.
Rules and processes are therefore to be followed without question, and any transgression is a sin and hence requires atonement or other forms of punishment, as does consideration of any alternative viewpoints.
#6 Loaded language
New words and language are created to explain the new and profound meanings that have been discovered. Existing words are also hijacked and given new and different meaning.
This is particularly effective due to the way we think a lot though language. The consequence of this is that the person who controls the meaning of words also controls how people think. In this way, black-and-white thinking is embedded in the language, such that wrong-doers are framed as terrible and evil, whilst those who do right (as defined by the group) are perfect and marvellous.
The meaning of words are kept hidden both from the outside world, giving a sense of exclusivity. The meaning of special words may also be revealed in careful illuminatory rituals, where people who are being elevated within the order are given the power of understanding this new language.
#7 Doctrine over person
The importance of the group is elevated over the importance of the individual in all ways. Along with this comes the importance of the the group's ideas and rules over personal beliefs and values.
Past experiences, beliefs and values can all thus be cast as being invalid if they conflict with group rules. In fact this conflict can be used as a reason for confession of sins. Likewise, the beliefs, values and words of those outside the group are equally invalid.
#8 Dispensed existence
There is a very sharp line between the group and the outside world. Insiders are to be saved and elevated, whilst outsiders are doomed to failure and loss (which may be eternal).
Who is an outsider or insider is chosen by the group. Thus, any person within the group may be damned at any time. There are no rights of membership except, perhaps, for the leader.
People who leave the group are singled out as particularly evil, weak, lost or otherwise to be despised or pitied. Rather than being ignored or hidden, they are used as examples of how anyone who leaves will be looked down upon and publicly denigrated.
People thus have a constant fear of being cast out, and consequently work hard to be accepted and not be ejected from the group. Outsiders who try to persuade the person to leave are doubly feared.
Dispensation also goes into all aspects of living within the group. Any and all aspects of existence within the group is subject to scrutiny and control. There is no privacy and, ultimately, no free will.
Most of these methods are intigrated into the social climb music video, showing an elite, almost cult-like group of people most liekly cut off of the rest of the world, etc. i think #3 could also be a reference to the song “modern day cain” by iDKHOW, of which (for example) the pre-chorus is:
“So now you've done a little wrong And you need to be forgiven By the Vicar and the company you keep And then you conjure up a fiction To get the pretty girl to listen“
and also the main chorus that is:
“This is the sin That I will confess to release myself From consequence And everyone can tell“
in which method #3: Confession is mentioned directly. (Oh boi, i think we gettin to the point now, but after 2 hours just straight out researching and writing the first two explanations/theories i kinda dont know how to formulate the next section. i´ll take a short break.)
What is Social Reconditioning?
As i did my research on the internet, the term “social conditioning” seemed to have appeared way more often in results, and doesn´t seem to differ that heavily from social reconditioning, so let me explain it first. Social conditioning is the definition of training someone to behave in a manner that is generally approved from society and/or peer groups in society. “Manifestations of social conditioning are vast, but they are generally categorized as social patterns and social structures including nationalism, education, employment, entertainment, popular culture, religion, spirituality and family life. The social structure in which an individual finds him or herself influences and can determine their social actions and responses. “ (Wikipedia)
So now that we´ve got that figured out, what would Social Reconditioning mean? I myself would explain it as having to adjust from one specific social pattern/structure to another. an example i provide is a soldier coming back home from the war and having to adjust into the general city-life from the strict life in an army. The “corporate guide to social reconditioning” is most likely to be a book in the iDKHOW universe abouthow to fit into a generally acepted form of society again. But what other social structure, or rather group of people is it, that one has to recover from?
This is what i think is worth mentioning in this wikipedia article:

Edward Bernays, Freud's nephew and the father of propaganda and public relations, used many of his uncle's theories in order to create new methods in marketing. ALSO an in depth explanation of what kinda magic shit allura pulled to get voltron out of naxzila(which i thought was naksilla until i looked on the netflix summary of ep 6 thx netflix aha) and like more in depth on the magic in the voltron verse pls pls pls.

Connect Road
Hi! I’m gonna make a quick connect road tutorial/guide because I haven't’ seen any and it could be helpful. If anyone has anything they’d like to add to this go ahead and tell me!
SO When you first get in the game after putting in your name and all that jazz, you’ll see a screen like this (TIP: You should be able to download this game through the Qoo app safely if you don’t live in Japan.)
Theres a lot going on I know but it’s not that hard to wade through. These are what all your buttons do anyway, or at least all the ones I know.
The point of the game is to collect characters, or cards, and use them to win races in a connect-bubbles kind of style.
Connect the little bubbles that match your cards and where you’re at. Blue is for all rounders (Fukutomi, Midousuji) red is for climbers (Manami, Onoda) and green is for sprinters (Naruko, Aoyagi) there are also what are called hope characters which are purple (Specials cards such as Sugimoto and Kaburagi), purple only appears if you have those cards on your team.
The more balls you connect, the more damage you deal. You can to connect red ones when you’re on hills and green when you’re on flats or downhill, blue can be anywhere. The other teams health bars will be displayed above their heads, you automatically attack the one to your left, but you can tap the one to your right and target them if you’d like.
If you're Stamina reaches zero, you lose, so make sure to watch that! Also make sure to watch where you are; if you use climbing on flats, it’ll still work, but it won’t be as effective.
I usually save the Hime thing for the end where its just the ace and assist, but use it if you’re in trouble. The “big boom thingy” will clear your board of all the bubbles (Including power ups and stamina) and will deal damage to the enemies. Use it wisely.
There will also be yellow bubbles that give points to your cards skill, which I’ll talk more on later, but when you get enough bubbles of their certain color,you can activate the characters skill (The ones that say “ok” over them are ready)

In the club room, click on the cards button on the bottom of the screen and you’ll get here.
1. You have 4 tabs, each can hold their own team. You can put the same card in different teams, or make completely new ones. When you’re entering a level, you can select what team you’d like to use (A,B,C, or D)
2. This is your main team. The one at the very front if your Ace, and the second if the assist. Your ace and your assist should be all -rounders because there will be ace battles, which could be on either hills or flats. The rest can be set up however you like it. Just click on cards and then click on the spot you can them to go. you can tap cards and other cards to swap them, or if you hold the card for a moment it’s stats will show up, which I’ll explain in a minute.
3. This lil number n the corner here will go up as you go up in rank. It’s a sort of cap, which prevents you form having two many high cards on your team at a low level. Kinda dumb but whatever.
4. Click this button to save everything you’ve done and go back to the club room
STATS
google translate doesn’t like this picture, but anyway this is the important stuff. You’ve got your stamina up top, flat speed, climbing speed, and I’m pretty sure like fighting spirit, competitive will, guts. Idk what the last three got to do with anything but those little blue numbers on the side are bonuses added on by items, which I”ll get to later again!
Stats are important, the stamina is combined with the rest of the teams stamina to make your overall stamina bar in a race. The higher the star count means the higher your base stats are, your stats get higher when you level them up through experience in races or with the rollers, which I’ll get to. The higher the stats are, the more damage your card will do in a race when you get big combos.
Special little things are sort of a bonus reaction thing, they say quotes when you race and you collect them by putting the characters in different situations. Its not a specific science but it’s cute.
The bottom is just all the other versions of that character you have, and what ones you don’t.
SKILLS is on the other tab, which are usually bonuses to damage the opponent. however, some cards have different skills, which are not specific to a character. Sometimes I don’t know what the skill does, some skills change balls to a different color, some eat all the ones of their color on the screen and use it to beat the shit out of your opponents. Test it out and stuff!
LEVELING UP AND STUFF
To make your skills require less bubbles, feed them food! A characters favorite food will give you double experience points, but some food have a crazy amount of experience points so it doesn’t matter. It’ll say it when you’re on your list of food.
Click on items in your room and toggle with these buttons to do stuff. It’s around the same for other items that don’t do stuff, but obviously some are missing buttons because you can’t do stuff with them.
Rollers give experience to their level, food gives experience to their skill, sleeping in the bed gives experience to their maximum level. I have no idea what the barbells do. This all requires time, which will be displayed in a meter above the characters head while they’re interacting with the item. Better rollers take longer but give more experience, better tables dont’ change the experience but lower the time, I’m not sure with the beds. Put cards to work on these things while you’re not playing.
GACHAS & THE STORES
These are what your gold coins are for! Sopend em to get some good cards. the 11 for 250 guarantees you a 5 star, but warning; this can be any five star thats usually in these gachas, so this does not guarantee that it’ll be the 5 star listed in the gachas promo. Kind of crappy but eh. You can also get five stars through events and as race prizes, but I’ll talk about that later too. You get coupons in events, which will give you one card.
STORE
This is where you can buy items that help your characters! Flick through the tabs, they sell pretty much everything that's not event only. Click on the picture to see what it does, usually +1 to a stat, and click the pink button if you wanna buy it. You have a limited amount of items you can hold, however.
Click through the blue tabs for different stuff. This tab has all the stuff that needs to be put ON something, so a blanket or a shelf, but it’ll power up your dudes. The green button puts it away, it’s the same button lets you put it down when it’s in your inventory. When it’s put away, you can also sell the thing with the greyed out button that will be blue or yellow I think. This is good cause you’ll get gifts from dudes sometimes that you don’t want, and you have limited space for everything, including backgrounds and walls/floors. (numbers indicated in the top right corner in the purple box)
anything you buy will go to your items thing other than floors/walls/background, which can be accessed through the button on the pull out menu on your club room screen to the right
RACING
This is your map!
Usually the ones you haven’t gotten to yet are grey, the ones you need to beat are blue, and the ones where you’ve beaten all the difficulty levels are gold. The map is good for between events when you want to grind experience and get food/ money.
the special map is the same as the main one, BUT WAIT. you won’t be actually racing- you send off your team to race on their own, they’ll come back after the meter is full. This can take a long damn time, and sometimes fucks up for some reason on giving you prizes, so be careful. I”d clear the main map before you touch that.

EVENTS
Losta fun stuff! Do the events to get lots of goodies. They also usually have a 4 or 5 star prize if you can go through all the achievements, which are earned through getting event points.
The stars are important- you’ll have to beat all of them to get to the hardest, but try to match the stars up to the level for stars on your cards. If the majority of your cards are three stars or bellow, don’t try for a five star one, you’ll waist your stamina.
The pictures are for that weird screenshot tab. You get them naturally through the achievements, but you have to go tap theme every time you get a little Onoda sticker peeler. Idk what they do yet, but collect them anyway aha.

When you’re about to go into the level (by clicking on one of the difficulty levels) you’ll get this screen
If you select an event point boost, you spend the gold coin over it, but it multiplies your event points that you earn in the level by what number you chose. so say I picked 5 and went into the level with 500 points at the bottom, I’d get 2500. This is wasted if you lose the level. Be careful. Usually they’ll give you one free 5x per day or 3x.
you can also get boosts by having specific cards on your team. That extra all rounder multiplies my points by 1.5, which is a real help. They’ll usually specify which ones will do this by having them as a reward in the achievement tab or in a separate tab that sometimes comes up.
FRIENDS
you can have friends on this!
The grey button is to visit them, the red one is to delete them. Watch out! When you’re accepting a friend request, the red one is accept, it should appear as a little icon on the bottom of your screen in the club room. Friends are good, because you can visit their rooms and get back stamina like one a day or something. Theres a limit to how many you can go through, but you get 20 from you friends and only 10 from strangers.
click the GOOD Button to get stamina. If it were a stranger, click the button above that to send them a friend request. click the back arrow at the top when you want to leave, and the back arrow again to go back to your own room.

American Heart Association Renders Itself Obsolete With 1960s Dietary Advice on Coconut Oil Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola For well over half a century, a majority of health care officials and media have warned that saturated fats are bad for your health and lead to obesity, high cholesterol and heart disease. The American Heart Association (AHA) began encouraging Americans to limit dietary fat in general and saturated fats in particular as far back as 1961. The current version of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) food pyramid, called "MyPlate,"1 more or less eliminated fats altogether, with the exception of a small amount of low-fat dairy. According to MyPlate, the food groups are fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy — not the three biological building blocks known as carbohydrates (fruits, veg, grains), protein and fats. All the while, studies have repeatedly refuted the wisdom of these low- to no-fat recommendations. Now all of a sudden, the AHA is coming out with warnings reminiscent of the 1960s all over again. If you've followed the news lately, you will have seen bold headlines declaring coconut oil dangerous, and that you should switch from butter to margarine to protect your heart health! How is this even possible? It's akin to the flat Earth theory that inexplicably gained traction in the 21st century despite clear and indisputable proof that we indeed live on a planetary sphere. AHA Sends Out Warning to Cardiologists Around the World According to the AHA's latest advisory,4 saturated fats such as butter and coconut oil should be avoided to cut your risk of heart disease. Replacing these fats with polyunsaturated fats such as margarine and vegetable oil might cut heart disease risk by as much as 30 percent, about the same as statins, the AHA claims. This Presidential Advisory was sent out to cardiologists around the world, not just to those in the U.S. Overall, the AHA recommends limiting your daily saturated fat intake to 6 percent of daily calories or less.5 According to The Daily Mail:6 "The scientists analyzed all available evidence on the subject and found saturated fat — such as that found in butter, whole milk, cream, palm oil, coconut oil, beef and pork — was linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Replacing this with polyunsaturated fat — found in spreads and vegetable oils — or monounsaturated oils found in olive oil, avocados and nuts — cuts the risk of heart problems. The study … bolsters NHS advice that saturated fat should be lowered in the diet. Lead author professor Frank Sacks, of Harvard School of Public Health, said: 'We want to set the record straight on why well-conducted scientific research overwhelmingly supports limiting saturated fat in the diet to prevent diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Saturated fat increases LDL — bad cholesterol — which is a major cause of artery-clogging plaque and cardiovascular disease' … The authors, however, warned that not all margarines and spreads are healthy. They found that some forms of margarine which use 'trans fats' — a type of fat which improves shelf life — actually raise the risk of heart disease." Victoria Taylor, senior dietician at the British Heart Foundation, also made sure to note that "lifestyle change should go hand in hand with taking any medication prescribed by your doctor; it shouldn't be seen as one or the other." On What Evidence Does AHA Base Their Recommendation? How did the AHA come to the conclusion that they were right about saturated fat 60 years ago and have been right all along? As noted by American science writer Gary Taubes in his extensive rebuttal to the AHA's advisory:8 "The history of science is littered with failed hypotheses based on selective interpretation of the evidence … Today's Presidential Advisory … may be the most egregious example of Bing Crosby epidemiology ['accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative'] that I've ever seen … [T]hey methodically eliminate the negative and accentuate the positive until they can make the case that they are surely, clearly and unequivocally right … [T] he AHA concludes that only four clinical trials have ever been done with sufficiently reliable methodology to allow them to assess the value of replacing SFAs with PUFAs (in practice replacing animal fats [with] vegetable oils) and concludes that this replacement will reduce heart attacks by 30 percent … These four trials are the ones that are left after the AHA experts have systematically picked through the others and found reasons to reject all that didn't find such a large positive effect, including a significant number that happened to suggest the opposite … They do this for every trial but the four, including among the rejections the largest trials ever done: the Minnesota Coronary Survey, the Sydney Heart Study and, most notably, the Women's Health Initiative, which was the single largest and most expensive clinical trial ever done. All of these resulted in evidence that refuted the hypothesis. All are rejected from the analysis." Taubes, an investigative science and health journalist who has written three books on obesity and diet, points out that this latest advisory document actually reveals the AHA's longstanding prejudice and the method by which it reaches its conclusions. In 2013, the AHA released a report9 claiming "the strongest possible evidence" supported the recommendation to replace saturated fat with polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs). This, despite the fact that several meta-analyses, produced by independent researchers, concluded the evidence for restricting saturated fats was weak or lacking. The latest advisory document reveals how the AHA could conclude they had the "strongest possible evidence." Then, as now, they methodically came up with justifications to simply exclude the contrary evidence. All that was left — then and now — were a small number of studies that support their preconceived view of what they think the truth should be. Studies Included in AHA's Advisory Are Based on Outdated Science Would it surprise you to find out that the four studies that made the cut all date from the 1960s and early 1970s? It makes sense, doesn't it, since those are the eras when the low-fat myth was born and grew to take hold. The problem is, nutritional science has made significant strides since then. As noted by Taubes, one of the studies included was the Oslo Diet-Heart Study,10 published in 1970, in which 412 patients who'd had a heart attack or were at high risk of heart disease were randomized into two groups: One group got a low-saturated fat, high-PUFA diet along with ongoing, long-term "instruction and supervision" while the other group ate whatever they wanted and received no nutritional counseling whatsoever. "This is technically called performance bias and it's the equivalent of doing an unblinded drug trial without a placebo. It is literally an uncontrolled trial, despite the randomization. (… [A]ll the physicians involved also knew whether their patients were assigned to the intervention group or the control, which makes investigator bias all that much more likely.) We would never accept such a trial as a valid test of a drug. Why do it for diet? Well, maybe because it can be used to support our preconceptions," Taubes writes. Taubes goes on to state that he was so curious about this Oslo study he bought a monograph published by the original author. In it, the author describes in more detail how he went about conducting his trial. Interestingly, this monograph reveals that the sugar consumption in the treatment group was only about 50 grams a day — an amount Taubes estimates may be about half the per capita consumption in Norway at that time, based on extrapolated data.11 "In this trial, the variable that's supposed to be different is the [saturated fat]/PUFA ratio, but the performance bias introduces another one. One group gets continuous counseling to eat healthy, one group doesn't. Now how can that continuous counseling influence health status? One way is that apparently, the group that got it decided to eat a hell of lot less sugar. This unintended consequence now gives another possible explanation for why these folks had so many fewer heart attacks. I don't know if this is true. The point is neither did Leren. And neither do our AHA authorities," Taubes writes. "All of the four studies used to support the 30 percent number had significant flaws, often this very same performance bias. That said, let's look at what else Shanahan has to say on the matter: "Most doctors don't notice that the medical leadership is making unfounded claims, and the reason they don't notice is because … articles asserting the existence of human clinical trial evidence against coconut as well as all other foods high in saturated fat, conflate the sources of saturated fat with the saturated fat itself. Saturated fat does not actually exist in the food chain; what they're talking about are saturated fatty acids, the components of triglyceride fat, the substance chefs call simply 'fat.' We often say things like 'coconut oil is a saturated fat' and 'butter is a saturated fat.' But it would be more correct to say 'coconut oil is high in saturated fatty acids.' Coconut oil, butter, lard, tallow and every other animal fat also contain monounsaturated and even some polyunsaturated fatty acids in addition to saturated fatty acids … The idea is foods contain blends of fatty acids in varying proportion." Put another way, most foods contain a blend of fatty acids, not just one. Margarine and shortening also contain saturated fatty acids, yet the AHA makes no mention of this. The harder the margarine, the more saturated fat it tends to contain, in some cases more than butter or lard. "So, when people eat margarine and shortening, in addition to toxic trans fatty acids they're also eating saturated fatty acids. And that means that when a study says it's swapping out saturated fat for vegetable oils, that does not equate to swapping out butter and lard. It could very well be the case that margarine and shortenings were among the foods that got eliminated," Shanahan says. "And because most doctors don't realize that margarine and shortenings contain saturated fatty acids, they also don't consider it particularly important to wonder whether or not studies like the four core citations mentioned in the Advisory are actually confounded by the fact that the baseline, high-saturated fat diet included a significant amount of margarines and shortenings that contain toxic trans fat. Because if they did, then that means whatever health benefits were observed in the studies may have nothing to do with the reductions in saturated fat. It's cutting back on trans fat that makes the difference to health." Anti-Saturated Fat Recommendations Have Been Followed With Disastrous Results Since the 1950s, when vegetable oils began being promoted over saturated fats like butter, Americans have dutifully followed this advice, dramatically increasing consumption of vegetable oil. Soy oil, for example, has risen by 600 percent (10,000 percent from 1900) while butter, tallow and lard consumption has been halved. We've also dramatically increased sugar consumption.14 Alas, rather than becoming healthier than ever, Americans have only gotten fatter and sicker. Heart disease rates have not improved even though people have been eating what the AHA suggests is a heart-healthy diet. Common sense tells us if the AHA's advice hasn't worked in the last 65 years, it's not likely to start working now. As noted by Shanahan, technology that allows us to study molecular reactions is relatively recent, and certainly was not available back in the 60s and 70s. Modern research is just now starting to reveal what actually happens at the molecular level when you consume vegetable oil and margarine, and it's not good. For example, Dr. Sanjoy Ghosh,15 a biologist at the University of British Columbia, has shown your mitochondria cannot easily use polyunsaturated fats for fuel due to the fats' unique molecular structure. Other researchers have shown the PUFA linoleic acid can cause cell death in addition to hindering mitochondrial function.16 PUFAs are also not readily stored in subcutaneous fat. Instead, the tends to get deposited in your liver, where they contribute to fatty liver disease, and in your arteries, where they contribute to atherosclerosis. According to Frances Sladek,17 Ph.D., a toxicologist and professor of cell biology at UC Riverside, PUFAs behave like a toxin that builds up in tissues because your body cannot easily rid itself of it. When vegetable oils like sunflower oil and corn oil are heated, cancer-causing chemicals like aldehydes are also produced.18 Source: The Telegraph November 7, 2015 Not surprisingly, fried foods are linked to an increased risk of death. Most recently, eating fried potatoes more than twice a week was found to double a person's risk of death compared to never eating fried potatoes.19 Animal and human research has also found vegetable oils promote: Obesity and fatty liver20 Lethargy and prediabetic symptoms21 Chronic pain/idiopathic pain syndromes (meaning pain with no discernible cause)22 Migraines23 Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis24 Biochemistry Versus Statistics According to Shanahan, the idea that PUFAs are healthier than saturated fats fall flat when you enter the field of biochemistry, because it's "biochemically implausible." In other words, the molecular structure of PUFA is such that it's prone to react with oxygen, and these reactions disrupt cellular activity and cause inflammation.25 Oxidative stress and inflammation, in turn, are hallmarks not only of heart disease and heart attacks but of most chronic diseases.26,27 "Meanwhile, the folks at the AHA claim saturated fat is pro-inflammatory and causes arterial plaque and heart attacks — but there is no biochemically plausible explanation for their argument. Saturated fat is very stable, and will not react with oxygen the way PUFA fat does, not until the fundamental laws of the universe are altered," Shanahan writes. "Our bodies do need some PUFA fat, but we need it to come from food like walnuts and salmon or gently processed (as in cold pressed, unrefined) oils like flax and artisanal grapeseed, not from vegetable oils because these are refined, bleached and deodorized, and the PUFA fats are molecularly mangled into toxins our body cannot use." The Cholesterol Argument Researchers have also laid waste to the notion that having high cholesterol is a primary contributor to heart disease in the first place. This is the basic premise upon which the AHA builds its conclusion that saturated fats are bad for you. The idea is that saturated fats raise your cholesterol level, thus raising your risk for heart disease. But again, they use too broad a brush and ignore the details. For example: • A recent study28 published in The BMJ reanalyzed data from the Minnesota Coronary Experiment (MCE) that took place between 1968 and 1973, after gaining access to previously unpublished data. This was a double-blind, randomized controlled trial to test whether replacing saturated fat with vegetable oil (high in linoleic acid) would lower cholesterol levels, thus reducing heart disease and related deaths. Interestingly, while the treatment group did significantly lower their cholesterol, no mortality benefit could be found. In fact, for each 30 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) reduction in serum cholesterol, the risk of death increased by 22 percent. Swapping saturated fat for vegetable oil also had no effect on atherosclerosis rates or heart attacks. As noted by the authors: "Available evidence … shows that replacement of saturated fat in the diet with linoleic acid effectively lowers serum cholesterol but does not support the hypothesis that this translates to a lower risk of death from coronary heart disease or all causes. Findings … add to growing evidence that incomplete publication has contributed to overestimation of the benefits of replacing saturated fat with vegetable oils …" • AHA also does not take LDL particle number into consideration. There are large, fluffy LDL particles and small, dense ones. We didn't have this information in the 1960s, but we sure have it now. This is yet another crucial detail that makes all the difference in the world, as large LDL particles have been shown to be harmless and do not raise your risk for heart disease. And guess what? Sugar promotes harmful small, dense LDLs while saturated fats found in butter and coconut oil promotes harmless large, fluffy LDLs29 Is Coconut Oil Healthy or Not? The short answer is yes, coconut oil is healthy. It's been a dietary staple for millennia, providing you with high-quality fat that is important for optimal health. It supports thyroid function, normalizes insulin and leptin function, boosts metabolism, and provides excellent and readily available fuel for your body in lieu of carbohydrates (which you need to avoid if you want to lose weight). A really important benefit of coconut oil is related to the fact that the ketones your liver creates from it are the preferred fuel for your body, especially your heart and brain, and may be key for the prevention of heart disease and Alzheimer's. It truly is a healthy staple that belongs in everyone's kitchen. Coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), and their smaller particle size helps them penetrate your cell membranes more easily. However, MCT oil has a far higher concentration of these shorter chain fats that are more efficiently converted to ketones; C8 or caprylic acid has the best ability to convert to ketones. MCTs do not require special enzymes and they can be utilized more effectively by your body, thus putting less strain on your digestive system. Normally, a fat taken into your body must be emulsified with bile from your gallbladder before it can be broken down and properly absorbed. Long chain fats therefore frequently end up being stored in your fat cells. However, your body treats MCTs differently. MCTs bypass the bile and fat storage process and go directly to your liver, where they are converted into ketones. Your liver quickly releases the ketones into your bloodstream where they are transported around your body to be used as fuel. By being immediately converted into energy rather than being stored as fat, MCTs stimulate your body's metabolism and help promote weight loss. Coconut Oil Promotes Thyroid Health Part of coconut oil's health benefits also relate to its beneficial impact on your thyroid. Unlike many other oils, coconut oil does not interfere with T4 to T3 conversion, and T4 must be converted to T3 in order to create the enzymes needed to convert fats to energy. Part of what makes processed vegetable oils so damaging to the thyroid is that they oxidize quickly and become rancid, which prevents the fatty acids from being deposited into your cells, thereby impairing the conversion of T4 to T3. This is symptomatic of hypothyroidism. Coconut oil is a saturated fat and therefore very stable and not susceptible to oxidation. The fact that it doesn't go rancid helps boost your thyroid function. Eliminating processed vegetable oils from your diet and replacing them with coconut oil can, over time, help rebuild cell membranes in your liver (where much of the thyroid hormone conversion occurs) and increase enzyme production. This will assist in promoting the conversion of T4 to T3 hormones. The most common fat in coconut oil is lauric acid, often considered a "miracle" fat because of its unique health-promoting properties. Your body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, which has antiviral, antibacterial and antiprotozoal properties. Thyroid problems can often be traced back to chronic inflammation, which the lauric acid in coconut oil can help suppress. To obtain the full range of coconut oil's health and weight loss benefits, I typically recommend 2 to 3 1/2 tablespoons per day for adults. That said, there is at least one instance where coconut oil is contraindicated due to its lauric acid content. In his book, “The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in ‘Healthy’ Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain,” Dr. Steven Gundry explains how coconut oil may be problematic if you have leaky gut, which is almost universal in individuals who are not paying attention to their lectin intake. As it turns out, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an endotoxin, attaches to lauric acid, facilitating its transport past your gut lining into your blood stream. Interestingly, MCT oil does not do this. So, if you have leaky gut, or unless you’re healthy and eating a lectin free diet, it may be best to avoid coconut oil and use MCT oil instead. Caprylic acid would be best, but neither of these will allow LPS to piggyback into your blood stream. You can learn more about lectins in my interview with Gundry. Who Pays the AHA? Science has revealed the low-fat diet to be corporate-promoted misinformation, yet the AHA keeps insisting it's the heart-healthy choice. Why? As noted by cardiologist Dr. Barbara Roberts in an article in The Daily Beast in 2014,30 "The quick answer: money, honey." Roberts points out that one of the reasons the AHA clings to "recommendations that fly in the face of scientific evidence" is because of its ties to Big Food. One of its primary revenue streams is its Heart Check Food Certification Program.31 Foods bearing this certification mark are supposed to make it easier for consumers to select products to include in a heart-healthy diet. Companies pay about $700,000 annually for the right to use this mark on their packaging.32 As of 2014, the AHA endorsed about 890 foods as heart-healthy, including breads, cereals, pastas and pasta sauces, potatoes, egg substitutes, dried and canned fruits and processed meats.33 In other words, a whole bunch of stuff you really shouldn't eat if you care about your health in general and your heart in particular is on the list. Processed meats, for example, have been deemed so hazardous there's no safe limit.34 The AHA also endorses Subway sandwiches35 and Cheerios,36 and is sponsored by a long list of drug companies.37 As noted by Roberts:38 "Even more problematic are the foods containing added sugar … The AHA recommends that women consume less than 6 teaspoons (100 calories) of sugar a day and less than 9 teaspoons (150 calories) for men. Yet there are items that get the nod of approval from the Heart Check program despite being near or at the sugar limit, like Bruce's Yams Candied Sweet Potatoes … Indeed, until 2010, the Heart Check imprimatur was stamped on a drink called Chocolate Moose Attack, which contained more sugar per ounce than regular Pepsi. And until [2014], Heart Check approved many foods with trans fats …" AHA Was Wrong in the 1960s and Is Still Wrong Heart disease is primarily caused by chronic inflammation, which is caused by excessive amounts of omega-6 (unbalanced omega-6 to omega-339), dangerous trans fats, processed vegetable oils and excessive sugar in the diet. Saturated fats, on the other hand, have been repeatedly exonerated, with studies showing they do not contribute to heart disease and are in fact a very important source of fuel for your body. Granted, it's tough to admit you've been wrong for 65-plus years. Such an admission can mar an organization's reputation. But in trying to turn back the clock to 1960 and promote margarine and vegetable oils over butter and coconut oil, the AHA is proving itself obsolete. This recommendation is, in my view, professionally irresponsible. It's completely irrational in the face of modern nutritional science. With it, the AHA has painted itself into a corner from which it cannot extract itself without turning the entire organization upside-down. As noted by Dave Asprey, founder of Bulletproof.com, "The AHA campaign is backfiring because of the millions of people who already know that adding undamaged saturated fats into their diets makes them feel better. They can feel the difference in their energy, see it in the mirror, and measure it in their blood work … These anti-coconut oil AHA guidelines are an orchestrated PR campaign aimed at changing what we eat to match what is in the interests of the AHA's corporate sponsors, regardless of what recent research suggests. As the U.S. population gets more educated about the benefits of saturated fats and the harm posed by processed seed and vegetable oils, processed food manufacturers are looking for ways to trick us into eating the cheap, high profit, damaging 'food' they create and sell. That appears to be why they sponsor the [AHA]. These new recommendations are from an industry special interest group that promotes low-fat, high-sugar diets that kill people and has the audacity to label them as 'heart healthy.' In fact, the AHA executive leading the charge against coconut oil is the same guy that used to run marketing for Kentucky Fried Chicken and other fast-food chains."
