synopsis: alice is a lonely rich girl whose biggest fear is to become a lonely rich woman. ever since they moved to paris, her fiancé doesn’t seem to be interested in her anymore. so alice decides to find comfort in the arms of another man. warnings: cheating; angst; smut; i have never been to france; minors dni.

Chapter 05 | A Burning Hill

Alice goes home intentionally when she knows David won't be there. She grabs her Louis Vuitton luggage and starts to pack, looking around the apartment for anything she might like to take with her. There isn't much. She has a plan. She’ll take a french exit, she’ll go to a hotel and stay there until her head stops spinning. And only when that happens, if that happens, she’ll talk to David. It feels like a good plan. She was always non confrontational, her whole life. She was raised to be a good girl and good girls don’t argue, they don’t raise their voices. So she prefers to just leave. Except David also decided to go home when he thought she wouldn't be there. And he just stares at her in disbelief, watching her pack. He knows what it means, she’s leaving him. But he doesn’t know what to do. So Alice helps him.

“I know you’re cheating on me.” She says, surprisingly calm.

“Alice, love–”

“I cheated on you too.”

“Oh.”

They stay quiet for a while, just looking at each other. Alice continues talking when she notices he’s not going to say anything.

“We’re not people we’re pretending to be.”

“No, I guess we’re not.” David’s voice is low, he almost looks like a statue, unmoving. Or robot, only answering her sentences, without a single thought of his own.

“You used to be my best friend, David.” Alice starts crying when she says that. She didn’t know she had any tears left, but they’re just rolling down her face like a waterfall.

“I’m so sorry, love.” David is still unmoving.

“What happened to us?”

As she says that, David shakes his head and gets closer, he holds her face, trying to dry her tears.

“I don’t know.” It is as painful for him to say those things as it is for her to listen. “I just woke up one day and I wasn’t happy anymore.”

Alice almost laughs when he says that, and David raises his brow when he notices the spark of humor in her eyes.

“It was the same for me. That 's funny.” She chuckles.

“Yes, it is funny.”

They both laugh at that, a genuine, teary eyed laughter.

“Who–who was it?” David asks as she’s leaving.

“Does it matter?”

She doesn’t want to say it. And she doesn't want to know who he was spending his nights with either. It was the last thing they needed as they were saying goodbye.

“I still love you, Alice.”

“I still love you too.” She says, hoping that it matters. Hoping that maybe it means it wasn’t that bad, since they were still loving each other in the end. She leaves the engagement ring on his bedside table. And just like that, it was over.

After that, she spent as much time as possible at work, or at work related events. When she didn’t have anything else to do, she would return to her hotel room. A Garden Terrace Suite at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. She decided to spend her entire inheritance money in Dom Pérignon and drink herself to sleep for the rest of her life. Alice had another issue to deal with, another loose end she was in denial about. She was non confrontational, she told herself. If she never saw Kylian again, they wouldn’t have to break up. Or end things. Or whatever is called in those situations.

One day, Alice hears a knock on her door. She shouldn’t be surprised, she could have predicted that visit coming from a mile away. Ever since she stopped answering her phone and ignoring her texts. Still, she says, in shock:

“Mom?!”

Caroline Fischer stands on the other side of the door looking like she just came out of a photoshoot. But Alice knew better, that’s just how mother looks like. Strangely, there’s an orange little thing in her hand that doesn't match with her outfit.

“What is that?” Alice asks, still in shock.

“That’s a kitten, honey.”

“I don't think they allow pets in this hotel, mom.”

“They don’t. That’s why I hid him in my purse on my way here.”

Caroline moves her daughter out of the way and enters the suite, looking side to side at the deplorable state of the room. The place was a mess. She felt like she was walking into Alice’s teenage bedroom.

“Okay…” Alice is still unsure on how to behave, she closes the door behind her and just stares at her mother.

“He is yours! Here, take him.” Caroline hands her the cat.

“Oh… You brought me a cat?”

“Yes, Alice. Because you didn’t follow my advice.” She sounded bored, like she was saying something obvious that was already said hundreds of times. “So I came all the to France to deliver you a fucking cat.”

“He is cute.” Alice holds the kitten close to her face, the tiny thing can practically fit on the palm of her hand.

“Yes, I know. You have to name him, but don’t hurry. Take your time. Pick something chic. Something you won't get bored of. Choose wisely.”

“Are we still talking about the cat?”

Caroline sighs at the questions, and then she looks serious at Alice. A kind of look her daughter didn’t get to see very often. A look of genuine care and love.

“I’m not upset about the wedding. I’m strangely proud of you.” Caroline then immediately avoided her daughter's gaze, she felt ashamed of admitting such a thing.

“You are?”

“Yes, yes. Don't make me say it again. I guess I raised you better than I thought. You became an ambitious woman, Alice. And ambitious women don’t settle for men like David. I’m still worried, though. You’re your own now, starting over in the middle of your twenties! That’s dangerous. I figured the cat would help.”

“Thanks. Really. The job you got me is also helping a lot.” Alice smiles, she feels like teasing her mother about her strange behavior or maybe even hugging her, but she won't push her luck.

“Yeah? Good.” Caroline sighs in relief. “So you’re going to be fine?”

“I’m going to be fine, mom.” Alice agrees.

“And you’re sure you don’t need a psychiatrist?”

“Not right now, but I’ll let you know.”

“Good. Good.”

Hiding the cat in the Suite turned out to be hard work. Especially sneaking in all the cat food and items. But it made her happy to, for once in her life, be doing a harmless bad thing. She felt like Eloise at the Plaza, like a little kid doing shenanigans. One night, when it was just her, the cat, a bottle of Dom Pérignon and another episode of Succession, Alice started thinking about Kylian. And how he would have named the cat by now. She wondered how angry he was at her, or if he even remembered her at all. She went back to the apartment the next day.

As soon as she arrived, holding Cat, somebody opened the apartment door. A man she never met.

“Oh, merde. You’re not delivery.” The man looked at her from head to toe. “Shit, you’re Alice?”

He is suddenly pushed from the front door. It’s Kylian, and he replaces the guy in the same position, holding the door, staring Alice from head to toe. Behind her in the hallway another person shows up, holding bags from a nearby restaurant.

“It’s the delivery guy!” Kylian’s friend says behind him, who is still blocking the door. The four of them stand awkwardly in the entrance hall as the food is delivered and only after that Kylian acknowledges her presence.

“This is my friend Tchaga,” he points to his friends, who waves. “and Tchaga, this is my friend Alice.” Alice waves back.

“That’s a cute cat!” Tchaga points at the kitten and Kylian rubs his eyes, feeling stressed at the situation.

“Can you give us a minute?” He asks and his friend vigorously nods.

“Yeah, I’ll take the food to the kitchen.”

As soon as he leaves, Kylian turns to Alice, both still at the entrance hall.

“What are you doing here, Alice?”

“I wanted to talk.” She feels shy immediately as his attention is turned solely to her. She can feel her face turning red. “I fucked up. I know. So I figured I owed you a talk. If you want.”

“Did you bring a cat to help you?”

She recognizes the tone of voice and the look on his face, he’s teasing her and it feels like a victory to Alice.

“No.” She 's smiling. “I just couldn't leave him alone, he’s still a baby.” She holds up the cat, introducing the two of them. “So, can we talk? In private, hopefully?”

Kylian chuckles and agrees, gesturing for her to follow him.

“Yeah, come on.”

He takes her to the bedroom. Their bedroom. It looks different, in a way, even though nothing really changed. There’s a big box on the bed and Kylian sits right next to it.

“That’s…” He points to the box. “That’s your stuff. I was angry and I figured you wouldn’t come back, so I just…”

Alice continues to look around the room and notices a broken lampshade.

“Like I said, I was angry…” Kylian gestures to the lampshade, feeling embarrassed. He broke it the day she left, right after he came out of the shower, and hasn’t cleaned yet. For him, it served as a reminder. Alice handles him the cat, hoping it would help with his anger issue. She didn’t want him to be that angry during their talk. As he takes the cat, Kylian finally notices her hand, and the missing diamond ring.

“You left him?” His eyes turn twice its size when he says that. He can't believe it.

“Yes. For many reasons.” She’s staring at her feet. “I actually had a whole speech ready and now I can’t remember a single word I wanted to say.”

The cat looks comfortable in Kylian’s lap, and Alice smiles. She wants to be comfortable like that too, lying in that same bed, cuddling with that same man. Instead she just finally sits on the bed. closer to the middle, crossing her legs. Cat goes to her, asking for pets, and Kylian follows her movements, also crossing his legs. Now they’re sitting facing each other with only the tiny kitten in between them.

“You left him.” Kylian repeats, almost as if trying to convince himself. “All of my friends told me I was being an idiot, that you were just using me.” He says.

“You talked about me with your friends?”

“You didn't talk about me with your friends?”

Alice shook her head.

“Oh. Fuck. Well, I had a speech too.” He takes her hand and it’s almost insane that he’s allowed to touch her again. Or finally allowed to touch her. “You were half right. At first this was only about the trill for me, –” As he says that, Alice bites her lower lips, remembering their early days and Kylian laughs at her reaction. “Baby, pay attention.” He kisses her hand. “My feelings for you changed. I thought this was just an affair, that I could hide you here in this apartment, but then… You were everywhere. I couldn’t stop thinking about you, Alice. I fell in love. I’m in love with you. And I just wanted to keep you here as much as I could, until you had to leave to marry someone else.”

“I was so angry when you said that last time.” She comes closer to him, practically sitting on his lap and Kylian holds her waist. “Because I thought you meant that you didn't want me. That you were fine with me leaving.”

Kylian shook his head.

“I want you so much. Baby, how can you think that?” He brings her even closer, with Alice now fully in his arms. “Can’t you see how much I want you? Because I know you want me too. I've always known.” He starts distributing kisses all over her neck, and face. He missed her so much.

“I was an idiot.” Alice returns the kisses, trying to tell him she misses him too. “I’m so sorry, Kyky.” For everything, she tries to say, but he kisses her lips as soon as she apologizes.

“It’s okay, baby.”

“Kylian…”

“Yes?”

“I’m in love with you too.”

I’ve been doing this thing for about a year now, where I’ve made it a goal to try and find the documentary that disturbs me the most.

I stay away from documentaries that focus on animal abuse, since that’s just a massive no-go area, I can’t even think about someone as little as shout at an animal.

But I’ve watched quite a few at this point. I know a lot of people out there are also interested in this kind of thing, so I’ll give you some of the ones that have really had an impact on me. I’ll start with the tamest ones (available on mainstream platforms like Netflix) and it’ll get progressively more upsetting lol.

I’m actually quite a desensitised person, so if a documentary affects me, you know it’s worth it.

Green = unfortunate and upsetting

Orange = Jesus that’s fucked up, that’s latched onto me for a while

Red = The above + will find it difficult to watch again, and this made me cry my eyes out

Bold Red = Kept me up at night for a while + all the above. Still think about it to this day.

Bold with ** = don’t watch if you don’t have a strong stomach and can’t handle emotionless gory images

Jesus Camp (2006)

Filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady visit an evangelical Christian summer camp called Kids on Fire, where children take part in programs designed to strengthen and intensify their beliefs. The camp's founder, Becky Fischer, discusses her mission to indoctrinate youths in the word of God, while young campers play certain combat video games and talk about their love for Jesus.

**Orozco the Embalmer (2001)**

A Spanish-language, Japanese-Colombian mondo film (a subgenre of exploitive documentary films) directed by Kiyotaka Tsurisaki, following a Colombian embalmer named Froilan Orozco Duarte, who is shown living in El Cartucho, an impoverished and crime-ridden area of Bogotá, Colombia, where the homicide rate is high and corpses can be seen on the streets.

The Dying Rooms (1995)

Documentary about a crew going from one orphanage to another in China to investigate these so called "dying rooms" where the orphanage workers leave baby girls to die.

The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan (2010)

In Afghanistan many hundreds of boys, often as young as ten, are being lured off the streets on the promise of a new life. Also known as Bacha Bāzī: an ancient Afghan practice in which men train, buy, and keep adolescent young boys for entertainment and sex in a society that keeps women hidden from view.

Boy Interrupted (2009)

Filmmaker Dana Perry documents the life of her son, Evan, a 15-year-old who committed suicide. The film traces Evan's growing mental illness, including videotapes made throughout his short life and interviews with his friends and doctors.

Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008)

Dear Zachary is a both a touching tribute to a fallen friend and a heart-wrenching account of justice gone astray, skillfully put to film with no emotion spared.

hi anon! i’m so sorry it took me so long to reply to this. this week’s been so busy already.

i guess the internet is a good place to start for your research :) of course wikipedia itself is not a bad source, but if you really want to get information, look at the bottom of the wikipedia page for all the teams in the bundesliga, and get the info from the sources there. that’s what wikipedia uses to write their articles, so that should give you even more insight into the bundesliga and its teams, and rules, etc than you already get from the wikipedia article itself.

i’ll try and sum up the most basic info for you - that i know - and if you have any other questions, feel free to send me another message and maybe we can get into more detail:

bundesliga is the highest “class” / tier that you can play in, in germany. it is divided into 2 different tiers: 1. bundesliga and 2. bundesliga.

1. bundesliga consists of 18 teams.

for the upcoming seasons - currently in alphabetical order because the new season doesn’t start until the 18th of September - these are the teams:

Arminia Bielefeld were promoted from 2nd league, where they ended up in first place in the season of 2019/2020. The second team that was promoted is VfB Stuttgart. In exchange for these two teams being promoted, two teams have to be relegated. In the season of 2019/2020 those two teams were SC Paderborn 07 and Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Back to the Bundesliga Basics:

The Bundesliga stands under the umbrella of “DFB”, or Deutscher Fußball Bund (German Football Association), which was founded in 1900. In 1904 the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) was founded, which is basically the big boss of football. They keep an eye on a number of football associations across the world and also set up the Men’s and Women’s World Cup. DFB joined the FIFA right away in 1904, and in 1954 DFB also joined the UEFA, which is an acronym for Union des Associations Européennes de Football and therefor takes care of all things football in Europe. Self-explanatory.

UEFA wasn’t founded until 1954 because... things happened in Europe in the 30s and 40s.

During the time of the Nazi regime the DFB was dismantled in 1940 and it didn’t pick up again until 1950, when the Federal German Republic was reformed, and the West German football associations decided to get the DFB back up and running. They re-joined FIFA in 1954, and, as mentioned before, also joined UEFA that same year.

The Bundesliga how we know it, however, was not actually a thing until 28. Juli 1962, starting with the season of 1963/1964. Before that there were a number of clubs and associations throughout Germany who all kind of played side by side, and eventually in the 30s the idea of a “Reichsliga” (league of the German Reich) was brought up, where a certain number of teams would play and one would end up winning the title. Kind of what we do now.

And then the war happened.

And in between the end of that and the 60s, obviously they had brought some ideas back to the table, had tried to figure out a more competitive way and to bring football closer to the people.

In 1962 the idea of the Bundesliga was founded. 16 teams were to play each other in one league, competing against each other. 5 from “Oberliga Süd”, 5 from “Oberliga West”, 3 from “Oberliga Nord”, 2 from “Oberliga Südwest” and one from the Berlin City League - the Western part of Berlin, of course.

They had a super complicated system in place to figure out which teams would eventually be allowed to be the “founding fathers” of the Bundesliga. It had to do with economics, they ended up coming up with a weird system for who gets how many points for winning their own league, adding those up, multiplying, and then somehow they ended up with 16 teams... don’t ask me how, I have dyscalculia, I don’t understand their way of thinking at all. Maybe there was some voodoo involved, God knows, honestly.

Eventually they had their 16 winners from the aforementioned leagues:

Oberliga Süd: Eintracht Frankfurt, Karlsruher SC, 1. FC Nürnberg, TSV 1860 München, VfB Stuttgart Oberliga Nord: Eintracht Braunschweig, Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV Oberliga West: Borussia Dortmund, 1. FC Köln, Meidericher SV, Preußen Münster, FC Schalke 04 Oberliga Südwest: 1. FC Kaiserslautern, 1. FC Saarbrücken Stadtliga Berlin: Hertha BSC Berlin

In 1963 this “Bundesliga” wasn’t a pro-league, though. And there were a ton of rules in place that would probably make you go “huh?” these days... or maybe you’d think they are great rules and they need to make a comeback. A transfer, for example, could only cost up to 50.000 German Mark (roughly 25.564,50€ / $30.149,62).

Until 1967 you also weren’t allowed to sign more than three players from another team for the upcoming season.

At some point it was decided that football players would also have the benefits of a full-time worker, if they decided on football as a career, and not just something they did on the side.

When East and West Germany were reunited in 1989 / the early 90s, that’s when the Bundesliga really became more of a commercial success not just in Germany, but also throughout non-German Europe and the rest of the world. Which is also largely due to Germany winning the World Cup in 1990, and the European title in 1996, but the Bundesliga was also specifically marketed to popular media. In 1991 the German Football Association of the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Fußball-Verband der DDR) - the East German football association - joined DFB. Thus Germany was one again, not just on paper, but also in football.

Another thing that helped the popularity of the Bundesliga was the fact that in the 90s at least one Bundesliga club reached a European championship semi-final. In 1997 Borussia Dortmund won the Champions League, in 1996 Bayern München won the Europapokal, in 1997 Schalke 04 won the UEFA-Pokal. And in the following championships at least one German team reached the final of said competitions.

Let’s jump to the 2000s!

Since 2000 FC Bayern München has won the Bundesliga 13 times. The other winners were: Borussia Dortmund (2002, 2011, 2012), Werder Bremen (2004), VfB Stuttgart (2007) and VfL Wolfsburg (2009). Bayern München is also the only Bundesliga team in the 2000s to win the Champions League: 2013 and 2020.

After all that knowledge, here’s some random facts and numbers that you might find interesting:

- since it was founded in 1963, a total of 56 teams have played in Germany’s highest league - until the season of 2017/2018 Hamburger SV was part of the 1. Bundesliga for 55 seasons, which was a record. Now Werder Bremen holds this record, with 56 seasons to their name - Bayer Leverkusen holds the nickname of “Vizekusen” (Vice-Kusen), and they were at one point regarded as the “ever-second”, always getting close to the top, but never reaching it - Karl-Heinz Körbel has the most Bundesliga appearances: 602 - for Eintracht Frankfurt. He never lost a final with Frankfurt and was never relegated. - Bernd Stöber was the youngest coach in the season of 1976/1977 a t just 24 years, 1 month and 17 days old. - Brazil is the best-represented nation after Germany, with 159 Bundesliga exports (159), followed by Denmark (129), Austria (119), Croatia (118) and Poland (109). - in the season of 2019/2020 Thomas Müller had the most assists: 21. - retired football player Gerd Müller, whose active career was between 1965-1979, holds the record for the most goals: 365. - Otto Rehhagel holds the record for most matches as a manager: 832.

Now let’s go back to where we started: the season of 2020/2021.

Each football team has 11 players on the pitch. For the new season in 2019 it was decided that instead of 18 players, each team would be allowed to have 20 players in total - which means 9 substitute players on the bench.

During each season a team can win three main cups (the ones that everyone cares about the most, let’s be real): DFB-Pokal, Meistertitel (Bundesliga winner) and Champions League trophy. The last of which is not a German tournament / cup to be won, so I’ll leave that out for now.

DFB Pokal:

The DFB-Pokal is a German knockout competition, starting out with 64 teams. 36 teams are from the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga, the top four finishers of the third league are automatically added to the list. 21 slots are given to the cup winners of regional football associations, and the remaining 3 slots are given to the regional associations with the most men’s teams.

One pot contains the 18 teams from the previous season of the Bundesliga and the top 14 teams from the previous season of the 2. Bundesliga. The other pot contains the bottom 4 teams from the previous season of the 2. Bundesliga, the top 4 teams from the previous season of the 3. Liga and the 24 amateur teams that qualified through regional football tournaments. Teams from one pot are drawn against teams from the other pot. Since 1982, teams from the pot containing amateur teams have played the game at home.For the second round, the teams are again divided into two pots according to the same principles. Depending on the results of the first round, the pots might not be equal in terms of number. Teams from one pot are drawn against teams from the other pot until one pot is empty. The remaining teams are then drawn against each other with the team first drawn playing the game at home.For the remaining rounds, other than the final, the teams are drawn from one pot. Since 1985 the final has been held in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.

Meistertitel:

The Meistertitel is rewarded to the team that comes out on top on the last match-day of the season. Of course it can be calculated whether other teams can still catch up - points-wise - but the Meisterschale is not rewarded until the season is over. The current record-holder of most Bundesliga wins is FC Bayern München (29), followed by Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach (5) and Werder Bremen (4) in second and third place.

With the first three Bundesliga wins a team gets a gold star to put on their jersey, with five wins they get a second, ten wins is a third, twenty wins is a forth star. On top of that, the reigning Bundesliga champion gets to wear the Bundesliga logo in gold color on their sleeve.
