This shot from "Under the Silver Lake" is a perfect example of how the film blends nostalgia, conspiracy, and obsession. We see a Playboy magazine, a local map, a tabloid-style newspaper with "Jesus and the Brides of Dracula?" on the cover, plus some saltine crackers and a glass of orange juice. Each object seems random at first, but it’s all connected to Sam’s (Andrew Garfield) obsession with finding hidden meanings in everything around him. The Playboy symbolizes his fixation on women, while the map hints at his detective-like pursuit of clues. The crackers and juice feel oddly innocent, contrasting with the more adult themes of the other items—maybe a nod to Sam’s immaturity.
This visual approach reminds me of director David Robert Mitchell’s earlier work in "It Follows."
Mitchell includes these high-angle shots of food or everyday things in both "It Follows" and "Under the Silver Lake." In "It Follows," they add to the creeping dread, like danger is lurking just outside the frame. In "Under the Silver Lake," these shots tie into the main character’s obsession with hidden codes and conspiracies. The stillness and precision of these shots really help to amp up the unease in both films, turning the ordinary into something much stranger.

Virgil: What gets me is the number of people who are told to care about a job which they don’t care about.
Virgil: You can’t specify in my contract that as well as completing all these tasks I have to look like I give a shit.
Virgil: Like this is a horrible supermarket, I’m scanning the items of a woman who won’t shut up about her recent holiday, no wonder I’m misrable. Anyone who can derive happiness from this situation must be a complete sociopath

A könyvet az a David Mithcell írta, aki a Felhőatlaszt is. Körülbelül arra kell számítani, hogy olyan lesz. Nyakon öntve egy rakás visszautalással az előző filmekre.

Russia is such a weird country. I lived there for nearly a year, and even I forgot about it's weirdness sometimes. And then something will remind me of what a strange/fascinating country it is. This latest reminder comes from David Mitchell's 'Ghostwritten.' One of the chapters is told from the POV of a Russian woman in St. Petersburg. The weird Russian aspect of this story (that makes me think Mitchell has actually spent some time in that country) is the character's job in the Hermitage museum. If you've been to Russia before and spent time in their museums, you are already familiar with those babushki who serve as sentries in every room; they never move from their tiny wooden chair posts, except to chastise people who are taken pictures without a photo pass. That uniquely Russian job is what the character in Mitchell's story does. Reading it is bringing up all kinds of Russian memories that I haven't thought of in a long while. It's so strange to have an experience that had such an impact on your life, and not have it in the forefront of your mind every day. Maybe I need to spend more time reflecting on my Russia experience. Although, I find the more time I think about Russia, the more I miss it.
