“Y’ever heard of pirate glass?” Jack asked out of the blue, his drawing hand stilling as he set his charcoal down. Davey raised a curious brow, and thoughtlessly tilted the angle of his head as he did so. This drew a ‘tsk’ from Jack - ever the artist - and Davey rolled his eyes fondly before returning to his original position. “No,” Davey responded, watching with surprise as Jack retrieved his pastels. This was an exceedingly rare thing, Davey knew; Jack’s sketches were almost always exclusively charcoal. Nothing more than smudges of black on white, and yet so much more. Jack breathed such life into his drawings that they hardly needed color.
And yet.
Davey watched from the corner of his eye as Jack rifles through the box, pulling out several colors that he can’t quite see. “Why do you ask?” Davey inquired, his voice sounding strangely in the New York night. Even with the bustle of the city, the two of them seemed to be in another world where the only sound was the clattering of chalk.
Jack hummed as he shifted back, pastels in hand. “‘S neat stuff.” He said simply, starting in with one of the pastels - a pitch-dark shade, Davey could now tell. “When you look at it in the dark, or in most light, it looks just plain black or brown.” Jack continued, his hand making delicate, meticulous swipes across the paper. “Guess them pirates thought it helped keep the sun out o’ their booze or somethin’.” A chuckle, and when Davey looked over there was a sort of half-smile on Jack’s face, though his eyes were still trained on his drawing.
“But, if you get it in the right light, it’s anythin’ but plain. The color shines through.” Jack held up a bright spring green, something soft in his eyes that Davey couldn’t quite place. “Like a gemstone, y’know? Real pretty.” With that, Jack returned to the drawing, and the pair lapsed into quiet.
Chalk scratching paper, Jack’s soft, even breathing. Davey could stand to stay like this forever.
Davey isn’t sure how much time passed just like that, but eventually Jack stood up, tipped the chalk dust off of the drawing, and lingered awkwardly in his spot for a moment. A hand brushing over his braids, Jack turned his sketchbook around and extended it to Davey.
Oh. Oh.
Staring back at Davey was his own face - his own eyes. Davey was no art critic, but it was obvious that Jack had made the eyes the focal point. His eyes. They were bright golden-green, like new spring growth, with dark around the edges.
Davey knew that it shouldn’t have been so special. He saw his eyes regularly in the small mirror kept next to the bathtub, after all. But Jack had made them look…different. As though the lights of the city had turned them into something else entirely.
Pirate glass.
What a funny thing indeed. Such a fitting concept for Jack, who seemed to know everything about the seemingly most unusual matters. Davey was forced to wonder where Jack had learned of it - perhaps it was just another case of ‘improving the truth.’
Regardless, there was something to be said about Jack using such a comparison to communicate his thoughts about Davey’s eyes.
Real pretty played back in his head, and suddenly everything clicked neatly into place.
And even if pirate glass was just a Jack Kelly-certified method of skirting around the truth, Davey could think of worse ways to find out.

Description: On his first combat assignment, Cornett accompanied the Vietnamese Rangers on a search-and-destroy mission near Khe Sang. There he gained entree into a culture that he would ultimately respect greatly and admire deeply. Cornett's most challenging military duty began when he joined the Phoenix Program. As part of AK squad, he dressed in enemy uniform and roamed the deadly Central Highlands, capturing high-ranking VC officers in hot firefights and ambushes. It was there, deep in enemy territory, where the smallest mistake meant sudden death, that the Vietnamese fighting men earned his utmost respect. While offering rare glimpses of an aspect of the war most of the military and media never saw, Cornett tells the full, gut-wrenching story of his Vietnam. He also gives an unsparing view of himself - telling a no-holds-barred story of an American soldier who made sacrifices far beyond the call of duty . . . a soldier who, in defiance of the U.S. government, refused to turn his back on the Vietnamese. From the Paperback edition.
Review: This is a book that is great in some places, less so in others. I was actually tempted to stop reading it part way through because of how the story ends, and there will be spoilers in this review.
This book is a lot about failure, and overcoming failure, and then more and more failure. So much failure. This is a dude who... fails. He also succeeds but where the heart of the story is, well it's in his failures. He manages to end up in the famed Green Berets as a medic and assigned to Project Delta/B-52 but is basically kicked out for being a liability. He ends up in the 101st with their brigade LRRP team where he finds his first home. For those of you who read a lot about the VN war, you'll recognize a lot of the cast of characters in this section, with a majority of the focus being on his relationship with Rey Martinez. He then bounces around a bit, a little time in Germany, some time training medical stuff at replacement centers, and eventually as an Advisor in a few different areas. Throughout all of this he falls in love, fucks up the relationships, gets into a fucked up relationship, does a lot of drugs, gets drunk a lot, gets in trouble a lot, and eventually marries a VN woman who he later drifts apart from even though staying close to his brother in law who he fought with. At one point he tries to kill his XO and is court-martialed for it, but somehow manages to serve his time and rejoin the army for a very long career - totally unheard of but true! The problem with the book is that it is uneven, which keeps it from being a 5 star book... his coverage of certain battles is super finely detailed whereas his court martial and time in jail is barely a wisp of text. He tells more about using drugs and drinking than he does talking about his role as a medic and the training. Overall a good book and fills in some more stories from the 101st and the 302nd RF Co. He does a great job with the other cast of characters, and their stories and it's worth it just for that.

petition to give the mom friend title to Jack
if you’ve been following me for a while, you know i absolutely hate dwvey being seen as the “mom” friend of the group. there’s a lot wrong about it- david is too new to the group to ever be seen as a maternal figure, for instance- but it is so so SO prevalent in fics, particularly those taking inspiration from livesies.
but west endsies is smashing that trope to bits and let me talk about why.
as we know i have not seen west endsies but. BUT. from what i have heard and how it has been explained to me….. davey is no longer giving mom friend energy to the extent that ben fank unknowingly gave, because ryan plays him so weird and quirky as the show goes on. and i am just calling that an absolute WIN for jacnation
like i dont think ben fank intended to play him as mom-friendy, i think most of that is misconstrued by fanon seeing davey in a way he’s not intended to be seen, but from what i’ve heard about ryan’s performance, he’s way too awkward and shaking-like-a-leaf-ish to be seen as the “””mother””” of the newsies and i am so fucking HAPPY about it
bc even ryan himself said that as the show goes on, he starts playing davey weirder and weirder and you can see that This davey is just another teenager who wants friends and gets them in the form of brotherhood. this davey knows what the right thing is, and he does it, no matter how reluctant he may be. he’s not scared, per se, but he’s just iffy on the whole thing until he gets his stride in act II.
i think @jack-kellys put it best when they said:
now bear in mind again i bave not seen the production but just based on everything ive heard about this davey. this is the conclusion ive come to and as an AMFD (anti-mom-friend-davey) supporter, it is what is keeping me going in these trying times
#watch me squeeze it into Even In silence#also prev tags#so true ben fank we miss you come back#gonna go watch my cameo vid of him#david jacobs#david jacobs newsies#davey jacobs#davey jacobs newsies#javey#javid#jack kelly

🤍 The Character You Project Onto The Most?
david. it's almost embarrassing how obvious it is but as i said he's just so aughhhggh. it's so easy to see myself in him and i like projecting myself onto him a lot (& it's even nicer when it's a silly little headcanon and people actually like it!! looking at u maura<3)
💘 I Never Planned On You or Something To Believe In?
i never planned tbh. it is so endearing to see jack being so absolutely gone for kath even though it's the second time in his life seeing her <3

I was an avid livesies fan but in the past few days 92sies has grown on me at an extremely alarming rate
gang why do some 92sies fans HATE livesies. They act like it’s serious blasphemy like Yeha it’s different but it’s a broadway show vs a Disney movie musical it’s going to be different. Why can’t we spread love
#Like when you I think of David Jacobs its David Moscow and not Ben fank#Which is crazy because I love Ben fank#Ben fank’s Davey is the body of my pfp

i saw this post about david's new york accent (you might have seen it too) and I was thinking what about if instead when he's tired or worked up his Polish/Yiddish accent comes through. idk I think that would be very beautiful, especially with jack reacting so lovingly, curious to hear your thoughts
oh i love that !! tbh i have always thought it was a little silly to assume that davey wouldn't have an accent. i know that ben fank's kinda goes in and out in livesies but my davey will always have a sprinkle of New Yorker in the way he talks! (unless its one of my modern aus where he's from chicago lmao)
but yeah no i 100% believe in bilingual javid supremacy. it's always a toss-up for davey- when he's tired, his New York accent gets really thick, and i can see his polish accent coming through a lot stronger when he's stressed (mainly because it usually accompanies a frantic phone call/convo with Esther)! jack's new york accent is much more prominent all of the time, but he always resorts to speaking Spanish when he's stressed or pissed off, and his accents kind of mix when he's really tired!
of course they both love it when they talk in their native languages. i think davey would know spanish- i love polyglot dave- so he and jack talk in spanish pretty frequently, and while jack wouldn't know any polish at first he definitely picks up on a lot of phrases! and also they think that their accents are hot. duh.
i love them!!

i was soooo tempted to leave this off anon but. Alas. Here we are.
(you don't have to respond to this hdhdgh)
Today I finished my last day at school of being a ‘girl’.
When I go to back to school after half term i will be a manly male he/him man.
And I wanted to thank you. You and all the maggots.
You've boosted my courage so much. I have less social anxiety - online at least, with teachers in real life at most, just because of you guys. Being there and supporting me. You may have not even realized when or how you did so but it happened.
Thank you for this amazing community on Tumblr and discord. Thank you for this community that allows me to be me. The community that got me more into roleplaying somehow (idk???). The community that has introduced me to the most wonderful people ever. The community that loves incest and cannibalism, but also loves each other.
You guys are the primary reason I felt confident enough to go into that meeting with a pastoral teacher and say 'i'd like to change my name in school.'
Thank you.
(special mentions to Tzo and Crist, i love you guys so much /platonic)
Oh my gOD ROBIN IM SO FUCKING PROUD OF YOU COME HERE *LIFTS YOU UP AND SPINS YOU AROUND* THAT'S MY FAVOURITE NEPHEW Y'ALL!!!
I CAN'T WAIT FOR EVERYONE AT SCHOOL TO SEE YOU FOR WHO YOU REALLY ARE GOD I LOVE YOU SO MUCH

And look at how far you've come Robin you used to be star-struck by me (why??!) and here you are my best and favourite nephew and SENDING ME THIS FUCKING WONDERFUL NEWS AND YAY! YOU DESERVE TO LIVE YOUR LIFE FREE FROM THAT ANXIETY BECAUSE I PROMISE YOU, YOU MAKE EVERY CONVERSATION BETTER.

Description: In 1968, George Lanigan leaves the University of Maryland and sets off on the journey of his life. He volunteers to serve his country in the Vietnam War and enlists in the army where he becomes an elite Special Forces advisor in a top-secret program. The United States is clandestinely training the Cambodian Army, Forces Armees Nationales Khmeres, and Lanigan is at the heart of the mission. In this personal memoir, LTC George R. Lanigan, USA (Retired), adapts his forty-year-old letters and correspondence to his parents into an emotionally compelling and suspenseful narrative that relates his daily life of survival and political tension. It's an inside, firsthand look at a rare, and previously classified, Vietnam War experience. But its scope reaches beyond the war itself and illuminates the realities soldiers face returning home, building a life, and even visiting war zones four decades later. Its openness and honesty will resonate with war veterans, their friends and family members, those suffering post-traumatic stress disorder, and people of all ages who are interested in American history. Readers will learn about war life, a volatile political environment, and how personal experiences weave together to create the person one eventually becomes.
