I had the pleasure of attending the album release party for DAVID DEACON at Toronto’s The Rivoli last night. His new 8-track album, released Oct. 6th is titled Good Day Good Night and features original songs based on his own life experiences, having lived and survived seven decades of thrills, near tragedies and multiple career changes. Sung in his signature bluesy balladeer style, each track…

DVDs Capture San Francisco’s Glory Days, plus Frankie Ford, Bill Pritchard, Cal Tjader, & David Deacon For a brief time in the late 1960s and early 1970s, San Francisco was at the center of what appeared to be a burgeoning new world, one in which rock bands were not just musicians. They were in the vanguard of a movement that rejected practically everything that had come before and sought to…

Part 2
Summary: When Jim's mum is out on parole and comes to live with him and (Y/n), she does whatever she can to hurt (Y/n) and come between them. And it puts (Y/n) and her unborn baby at risk.
Enjoy.

"Hm, morning."
A shiver tore down (Y/n)'s spine when she felt an arm loop around her waist and a warm pair of lips attach to the side of her neck. She tilted her head to the left, trying not to move or shudder when the short hairs on Jim's head started to graze against her cheek and caused her nerves to ignite beneath the touch.
Her lips curved into a smile and she paused, her fingers tapping against the counter where she was in the middle of making them each a coffee.
"Morning, want breakfast before you go?" She twisted her head to the right and kissed the top of his head, smiling into his hair when she felt his teeth nipping against her skin.
It was hit and miss whether Jim would have breakfast or not, most of the time he grabbed a protein bar and waited until lunch with the squad at work.
"I'd rather have you." The way his words vibrated into her neck made (Y/n)'s heart flutter and she couldn't help the grin that spread across her lips.
"Oh really?"
(Y/n) forced her hands to work and started pouring the coffee, being mindful not to spill it when she could feel Jim's lips distracting her. And she could feel him smirking into her neck. He knew what effect he had on her and how to turn her to jelly.
She barely had the cups poured before she felt Jim's hands moving down to her stomach. He finally released his head from her neck but only so he could peck the side of her head and stand up straight behind her. (Y/n) tilted her head down, rolling her lips together as she watched his hands move to roll up her top.
"What're you doing?"
"Let me look at you."
She let go of the mugs, biting the inside of her cheek when Jim spun her round so her hips were backed up against the counter and she was facing him. Her hands moved to grip the counter, keeping herself steady as a fond look danced across her face when she looked up at her husband.
"You act like you haven't seen me in weeks." The tender edge to her voice was clear while she danced her fingertips along the back of his neck.
She could see where his eyes were drifting to. He had rolled her shirt up so it rested just beneath her bra, leaving her small bump on show. He was fascinated. Every day he was looking to try and see if he could notice the small changes and to see if he could see her bump growing and changing each day.
Jim's childhood had been far from great. Fighting parents, his dad who abused the both of them and his mum who always struck back until the day she decided to fend him off with a gun. And then foster homes for the next seven years until he could finally live on his own.
He wasn't used to having a family until he worked in Swat, and he wasn't prepared for the amount of love he would receive and feel for (Y/n) when they got together. Having a family was something Jim always wanted, but it was something he had been nervous about.
Jim didn't know how good of a dad he was going to be until that pregnancy test came back positive and he could feel the changes already. He had prime examples of what not to do and he used Deacon as a role model for how he was going to make this work. The love and excitement Jim felt already was enough to show him he was going to be okay at this.
"I wanna look at my girls." He responded with a shrug and a tick of his head that almost made him look boyish.
(Y/n) reached her hands up to cradle the back of his neck and she brought him down for a kiss, soaking up the sound he made when her nails scratched the short hairs at the back of his neck. She could feel his thumbs stroking across her hipbones which made her squirm and shudder in front of him, and when he bit her lip he elicited a gasp that had him smiling against her mouth.
Her hands moved down to his shoulders when he finally released her lips and trailed his way down her neck.
She heard hum murmur 'morning girlie' against her stomach and his hands kept moving back and forth over the sides of her hips. His lips tickled her stomach but the butterflies he elicited beneath his touch had (Y/n) swaying on her feet.
"She should start moving soon." (Y/n) continued to run her hands over Jim's shoulders and the smile that danced over his face made her heart leap in her chest.
She was sure he murmured 'can't wait' against her lips when he leaned up to steal another kiss.
(Y/n) knew anytime now she should start feeling the baby move and kick and she knew once that happened, Jim wouldn't be separated from her stomach. He wanted to be there for everything, he wanted to be at all the scans and feel every movement and he was already thrilled at the thought of when (Y/n) was going to give birth. He didn't want to miss a thing.
"Good morning."
"Morning mum." Jim nuzzled his temple against (Y/n)'s neck so he could just about see his mum as she walked past them in the kitchen. He grinned when he felt (Y/n) squeeze his shoulders and he sighed and tore himself away from her. He gave her hips a lasting squeeze before he grabbed the hem of her shirt and pulled it back down to cover her bump.
"Want some breakfast, Jimmy?"
"No, I'm good. Guess I need to get ready." He pecked (Y/n)'s temple and pressed up close until their abdomens were touching so he could grab the travel cup from behind her that she had filled for him.
He wasn't hungry in the mornings and he wasn't bothered about breakfast, he just had to get ready to go to work.
(Y/n) ran her hand up and down his shoulder, following him with her eyes as he moved near the fridge to kiss his mum's temple before she sat down at the kitchen table.
The look Karen shot (Y/n)'s way made her shiver but she forced herself to smile. She wouldn't let her mother in law get to her, at least not while Jim was home. When he was at work, Karen seemed to unleash her spiteful side. She would make snappy comments at (Y/n), move things, changes the dates on the calendar, she would do anything she could to upset or annoy (Y/n).
But when Jim was home, Karen was the picture of the calm, sweet mother who wanted nothing more than to get along with her son and his wife.
(Y/n) hated it. She hated how rude and spiteful Karen could be, and she hated that Karen was living with them, but what other choice did they have?
She needed to have a place sorted out or else she wouldn't have been released from prison and with Jim's reasoning, (Y/n) didn't feel like she could say no. Karen had guilt tripped Jim just like she always did, she made him feel guilty, she told him that he was the reason she was in prison in the first place. She had shot her husband to protect them both and that was the way Jim had always seem things.
He wanted nothing more than for his mum to be released and they had a spare room, which his mum was always pointing out. They had the space, she wanted to be close to her son and she didn't want to be alone after all those years locked up. There was no way Jim could refuse her without breaking her heart and that was the last thing he wanted to do.
"Oh Jimmy, are you taking me to my interview tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow? No, you said it was Friday." Jim leaned around the fridge to catch a look at the calendar on the wall.
His mum had a job, but it a long bus ride to get to and from work so Jim had found a few places closer to home that were willing to hire someone with a record.
"No, it's tomorrow at one. Can you take me sweetie?" Her smile was sincere, but it was the way she glanced over at (Y/n) that had the younger woman pushing back into the counter.
The smile faded from (Y/n)'s lips and she looped her arms over her bump, taking a deep breath to remain calm. She knew what tomorrow was. (Y/n) had her scan tomorrow and Jim had an extended lunch break tomorrow specifically so he could go to the scan with her. Hondo was happy and proud of Jim for being so involved and excited about starting a family and he said they would try and arrange Jim's shifts around (Y/n)'s appointments.
"Mum, we have the scan tomorrow, can't you get the bus?"
Jim tossed the travel mug between his hands and sank his teeth down into his lower lip enough to draw blood. He didn't want to upset his mum or make her panic, but he wanted to be at the scan, he couldn't miss that. And it wasn't a long bus ride to get to the diner in town where her interview was being held.
"Jimmy, you know how nervous interviews make me… it's not the first scan, (Y/n) will be fine without you."
With a deep breath, (Y/n) bypassed Jim and moved to the fridge to get a yoghurt. She wasn't getting involved in this, but she would make sure her silence was clear and disagreeable.
That wasn't fair.
Karen knew (Y/n) hated hospitals. Whenever Jim used to visit his mum in prison, he was forever talking about (Y/n) and their life together, how she made him feel like a better person and helped push him to get into Swat and get on the right track. Jim talked about her a lot and when he told his mum they were having a baby, he had mentioned once or twice that (Y/n) didn't do well with hospitals.
He went to the scans because he was desperate to be involved with his baby but also because he wanted to support (Y/n). He knew she had had bad experiences in hospitals and they made her nervous so he wanted to be at all her appointments to try and make it easier for her.
Jim spared a look over at his wife. He could see how hard she was gripping the fridge so she didn't start to shake and the way her eyes danced around the room gave away her unease which made him sigh.
"I can't take you, but I can pick you up afterwards."
"Oh, okay." The disappointment in Karen's voice was clear and it made (Y/n) feel sick.
Her mother in law wasn't going to make things easy for her now. Whenever Jim was at work and Karen was on a day off, (Y/n)'s day got worse. (Y/n) worked from home which had always been a comfort, right until Karen moved in with them two weeks ago. The first week she had been on her best behaviour, mostly because Jim had been home quite a lot.
Now he was back to his usual work pattern, (Y/n) was left alone with Karen who was becoming spiteful and insufferable.
"I gotta go, I'll see you both tonight."
(Y/n)'s chest fluttered when Jim held her chin between his finger and thumb so he could tilt her head up in his direction. His lips quirked up to one side and he brushed his thumb along her chin before he captured her in a quick but searing kiss.
"Love you," He spoke into her mouth, pulling her lower lip between his teeth before he was turning away and heading down the hall to grab his things.
The moment the front door closed, (Y/n) pulled her arms into her sides like she wanted to wear a suit of armour for protection. Her eyes followed Karen as she got up, lips pursed, nose crinkled and shoulders squared like she was getting ready for a fight.
Part of (Y/n) had thought in the beginning that Karen would be happy about having a grandchild. She thought Karen would be pleased for Jim because he was happy and settled. It didn't dawn on (Y/n) that Karen would become jealous. She was no longer the only person in Jim's life. Karen had been replaced. She couldn't have Jim all to herself, he was no longer the little boy she had left when she got taken to prison.
She had missed out on almost two decades of his life and as much as (Y/n) could sympathise, she couldn't condone Karen trying to keep Jim to herself and control him like she was.
"I guess you got what you wanted then."
Her harsh words made (Y/n) flinch and sigh. She didn't know whether to reach out for her mother in law or stay huddled up near the counter.
"Karen, I-"
"No, I get it. You think because you're having a baby that you've got him wrapped around your finger. Well you don't."
Both (Y/n)'s arms pressed into her stomach and she swallowed a gasp when Karen roughly barged her shoulder into (Y/n)'s chest on her way past her.
Why did she have to be like that? Why did she have to be so crude and snarky and possessive over Jim? (Y/n) always thought when she got married that she would have a great relationship with her in-laws. And when Jim told her about his mum, (Y/n) wanted to get to know her. She wanted to know the woman who had gone to prison to protect him, but that wasn't the same woman who was walking away from her right now.
This woman was bitter and manipulative, and maybe that was because she had to toughen up when she went to prison. Maybe she really did kill her husband to protect Jim, but she was using that as an excuse to control Jim and his life and worm everything to her advantage. And she knew (Y/n) wouldn't stand for it, which made (Y/n) an obstacle in her path.
God, (Y/n) hoped the worst Karen would do would just be to spit insults at her. She could endure this for a few more weeks, it wouldn't be for long.
Jim had agreed that his mum could stay with them for a few months, but she had to go when they had the baby, preferably just before they had the baby. The house was going to be lively when they had their daughter and they would be busy.
(Y/n) couldn't be looking after her baby and dealing with Karen and her vindictive nature. And she and Jim wanted to be a family and have their home to themselves when they had the baby.
Just a little while longer, and then Karen would be living on her own.
***
"Karen?" (Y/n) rapped her knuckles on the door and gingerly leaned around to peek into the spare room. Her hands stayed clinging to the door and she bit down on her lip, trying to pluck up as much courage as she had within her to both have this conversation and stay calm.
"Yeah?" The older woman looked less than interested in a conversation with her daughter in law.
She rose a brow and nudged her glasses further up her nose while she twisted on the bed so she was looking in (Y/n)'s direction.
"Have you seen my notebook? The blue one, I use for work?"
The flicker that danced over Karen's eyes and had her lips twitching made (Y/n) press further into the door. She knew it. She felt so stupid for even asking when she knew deep down that her book wasn't anywhere to be found, because of her mother in law.
(Y/n) worked from home, she kept all of her notes in two separate notepads which were always either in her and Jim's bedroom or tucked under her arm. (Y/n) needed her blue notebook with the sparrows drawn on the cover, it was all her dates and details and facts that she had to type up and send across to her boss this week.
The last time she saw her notebook was yesterday when she had been writing in the living room. Now the book was gone, and (Y/n) knew exactly who had moved it. Jim had been at work all day yesterday and he had gone again this morning. There was no way he would of moved it when he came home and went straight for a shower before climbing into bed. He didn't go in the living room.
"No, I don't think so. Why, is it important?"
She knew it was. Karen knew it was important, if (Y/n) didn't have those notes she would have to start from scratch and it would delay her and cause her to be reprimanded by her boss.
"It- it's my work, I need that book." Her voice was unusually quiet and she could feel defeat clawing at her throat.
"Oh, well I haven't seen it."
Nodding, (Y/n) turned on her heels and walked down the hall. She wasn't standing here arguing. She was going to search the house from top to bottom and if that made her look like an idiot or stressed her out then so be it, because she needed that notepad.
The living room had already been searched. (Y/n) had moved every book and magazine, looked beneath the sofa and the cushions and the bookcase. She looked everywhere she could think of.
She made her way into the kitchen and scanned over the few papers on the table, again. She looked in the little wooden crate on the windowsil that was for important letters and bills. She looked in the messy drawer and the cupboards.
Sweat rolled down the back of her neck and adrenaline sparked in her stomach that was churning and rotating awfully. She felt like she was going to be sick. What was she going to do if she couldn't find her notes? She was going to have to work late into the night to redo everything. (Y/n) would have to rewrite her notes and then type up her essay and her notes and then she would have to edit and make sure everything was ready to send off.
Grabbing a few wrappers from the counter, (Y/n) scrunched them up in her hands and started to tidy up. She may as well tidy the house as she tore it apart looking for what she needed, something (Y/n) wasn't so sure she was going to find.
She flicked open the bin, about to toss a few bits in until something caught her eye.
A sparrow.
A flash of blue.
(Y/n) leaned down, dragging her fingers through the bin with a wince, trying not to touch last night's dinner or the cereal from this morning.
She choked on a sob that had her lips curdling like sour milk when her fingers curled around her notepad and she wrenched it out of the bin.
The book was lathered in sauce from last night. Splotches of milk painted the cover and the pages were crinkled, cracking and sticking together.
(Y/n) couldn't stop the tears falling down her face or the way her chest shuddered and jumped when she looked through the pages. All her work. All those hours, those notes, the tentative, neat handwriting. Stained. Destroyed. Ruined.
Karen had put her work in the bin. She had dumped it in the bin and threw the leftovers on top to try and hide it and keep (Y/n) from realising where all her hard work had gone.
Why did she have to do this?
"Hey baby, what're you doing?" Jim leaned against the doorway to the nursery, glancing his eyes around the room. The walls were still pale magnolia from when they bought the place and moved in last year. They hadn't decided what colour to paint the nursery yet, all they knew was that they didn't want this pale, bland colour when the baby was born.
(Y/n) was five and a half months along now so anytime soon, Jim would get ready to paint the nursery and he would start setting up the crib and units soon too.
His arms folded over his chest and his head leaned against the door while he looked down at his wife.
She was knelt on the floor, a few onesies and bibs and little trinkets surrounding her.
A fond look swarmed through Jim's eyes, right until his wife turned around. The smile faded from his lips and the warmth in his eyes turned ice cold the moment he noticed the tears streaking down (Y/n)'s face. Her eyes were overwhelmed with tears, the colours blurring together and meshing around her pupils that were as wide as saucers.
He noticed the puffy look beneath her eyes and the way her lower lip kept wobbling as she tried to draw in a proper breath.
"Hey, hey what's the matter?"
He moved before he could stop himself and he slumped down to his knees beside her, trying not to kneel on any of the clothes scattered around. What had happened while he had been at work? They had been to their scan last week and everything had been fine with the baby, so he hoped she wasn't upset or panicking about the baby.
He reached out for her hands and gently pulled them onto his lap, smoothing his thumbs over the back of her hands while he waited for her to explain so he could help.
"I'm not doing this anymore Jim." (Y/n) pulled her hands away from his touch so she could run her fingertips up and down her face. It didn't matter how many times she tried to swipe away the tears, more drenched her face and had her breath bubbling and catching in her throat.
"What, doing what? Baby what's happened?" He tried to reach out for her again but (Y/n) moved faster.
"Look."
Something twinged in (Y/n)'s chest like her heart had physically been slashed when she looked across the floor. She scrunched up the blanket in her hands and roughly tossed it at Jim, sending him leaning backwards when it hit him in the chest.
Jim's stomach pulled inwards and his lips parted when he looked down at the blanket.
It was the one (Y/n)'s grandma had knitted when she was little. The blanket was a worn shade of white with a deep blue ribbon stitched around the edging. (Y/n) had had this since she was little and she had started adding a few flowers and embroidery stitches to update it ready for when she had her baby to pass it onto.
It was ruined.
The bottom corner had either been cut or pulled and the wool was unspooling. Half the blanket had been pulled so the woven stitches were undone, leaving a tangled mess of wool attached to what was left of the blanket.
"What happened?" Jim swallowed harshly as he held up the blanket and looked it over.
It would take a skilled knitter to fix this and even if someone could fix the blanket, there would be telltale signs and stitches that showed it had been wrecked and patched back together.
This was important to (Y/n). She didn't have a lot to remember her grandma by and their baby would never know her. (Y/n) wanted to give their child something that would remind them of someone they would never know, and now it was damaged, possibly beyond repair. "I- I found it in the drawer like this."
"Maybe… maybe it got caught in the drawer-"
"It's been cut! She's cut it. Jim, you- you know what this meant to me." (Y/n) swallowed harshly, wiping her hand beneath her eyes as she took the blanket back from Jim.
She wanted to throw it across the room, unravel it completely and toss it in the bin, but she couldn't. Her touch was unnaturally gentle as she folded what was left of the blanket and ravelled the loose wool around the blanket to stop it from unravelling further.
"And where's the stuff I bought?" (Y/n) motioned around to the clothing she had set out on the floor around them and Jim took a moment to look at it all.
There was the onesies Jim had picked out. A few items Deacon had given them last week when he and Annie went through their old baby clothes they didn't need for their girls anymore. And a few things from the others at Swat who had either donated their kids old things or like Chris, had gotten a few things to surprise Jim with.
But nothing (Y/n) had bought was here.
The few teddies she had picked out. The jumpsuits and mini dresses and tights she couldn't resist from town. The bibs and socks and little things to stock up on, everything (Y/n) bought, wasn't here.
"I- I don't know, maybe I tidied them in the chest of drawers-"
"Jim, everything I got is gone. The stuff you bought, that's all here. The things Deacon donated to us, that's here. Can't you see what she's doing to me?"
Jim ran his hand up and down his face, trying to take a deep breath but he found he could barely breathe at all.
This wasn't right. This couldn't be happening. It was just a mistake.
There was no way his mum would be this spiteful and vindictive. She wouldn't toss away the things that were bought for her first- and only- grandchild. She wouldn't cut up something so important to (Y/n) and unravel it like this to hurt her. She wouldn't wreck and mess with everything to wind (Y/n) up, Karen wasn't like that.
She was his mum. She loved him, she did everything for him, she had spent years in prison because and for Jim and now she was out. She wouldn't do anything to jeopardise what she and Jim and (Y/n) had here.
"No, mum wouldn't do this."
"No, no Jimmy I'm not doing this anymore, okay? You go to work but I work from home, I'm the one dealing with your mum's tantrums and her fits of rage. She doesn't like me, she scares me Jimmy and now she's doing this to me. What if it gets worse?"
(Y/n) couldn't do this anymore.
She had spent a month living with Karen and it was too long, too frightening. She had gone too far. First she had been rude when Jim's back was turned, then she started being horrid whenever she passed (Y/n). She had thrown (Y/n)'s notebook in the bin.
Karen watched as (Y/n) screamed and cried and sat on the living room floor for hours rewriting her notes and trying to salvage what she could from her notepad. Now Karen had gone as far as to throw things away that were for their baby, and she had destroyed something that was so important to (Y/n).
This couldn't keep happening. (Y/n) couldn't carry on like this, she wasn't staying home when Karen was here. She wasn't going to keep living like this with a cruel mother in law who was out to upset her.
(Y/n) was pregnant, she couldn't be stressed and panicked and she couldn't stay with Karen when she her temper was flaring. What if Karen lashed out at her? What if she went from verbally aggressive to being physical? What would (Y/n) do then?
"I'll talk to her."
With a broken smile and a shake of her head, (Y/n) moved her hand to Jim's shoulder and got up from their position kneeling on the floor.
"Thanks." The sarcasm dripping from her tone made Jim shiver and his expression dropped completely. He watched her leave the room, doing her level best to control her breathing and calm herself down before she made herself sick.
Part of (Y/n) didn't expect Jim to go and talk to his mum straight away. She thought he would take a few minutes to calm down, maybe look around the nursery and try to prove (Y/n) wrong and find all the clothes she couldn't find. But she heard him storm out of the nursery and when she looked over her shoulder, he was aiming for the spare room where his mum was since she wasn't at work today.
(Y/n) couldn't help herself.
She took a few seconds to calm herself down and clear the tears from her face before she backtracked and shuffled along the hall. She stayed close to the wall and a few feet away from the door. She didn't want to watch, but she wanted to know what Karen would try to say to defend herself.
She wished she hadn't listened.
Jim seemed to start off strong. He walked in there with the intention of telling his mum that whatever went on while he was at work needed to stop. But Karen's words were like a knife cutting right through (Y/n)'s stomach. She moved both hands down to cradle her stomach as she coiled in on herself.
"Jimmy she's pregnant, all those hormone changes and she's always so temperamental these days. She doesn't want me here, this is her way to get rid of me but I don't wanna leave you, baby. I'm finally out, finally able to be with my little boy again."
"I know, mum. I just… I need you both to get along, you're both my family and this is upsetting (Y/n). Try and be nice to her-"
"She needs to accept that I'm staying. We're meant to be together after all the lost time, Jimmy. (Y/n)'s just emotional."
"I guess."
Moving her hand to her mouth, (Y/n) swallowed down whatever cry was desperate to claw at her throat. She wasn't doing this anymore.
If Jim couldn't have her back and stand up for her, then she wasn't going to stay here. She didn't feel safe in her own home and that wasn't fair. (Y/n) had a right to feel safe where she lived and right now she didn't. She didn't want Karen living with them in the first place, but she didn't really have a choice.
If he wasn't going to help her and Karen was going to target her, then (Y/n) wasn't staying here with them.
Karen could have what she wanted. She could have Jim to herself until he worked out what he wanted to do and who he wanted to prioritise.
They were both his family but Jim was picking Karen over (Y/n), he was believing her over his wife and (Y/n) couldn't stay and be victimised any longer.
Staying wasn't an option.
***
"She doesn't wanna talk to you."
"Chris please. Five minutes, please?"
The pleading look in Jim's eyes won Chris over, although she still looked disappointed and angry.
Her lips rolled together, her eyes narrowed and she placed her hand on her hip before slowly opening the front door to let him inside. She didn't want to let him in, but he was here, again, and he was begging her. He had called and called (Y/n) and Chris but neither of them answered and this was the fifth day and he thought he was going to go insane.
He hadn't seen his wife in five days, that was almost a week. The longest he had gone without her was three days when Swat had been low on staff and everyone had been on a big assignment. This was different.
This was (Y/n) staying with Chris because she didn't feel safe in her own home and Jim wanted to do whatever he could to change that. He wanted his wife home where she belonged, not here with her best friend to get away from him.
Jim squeezed Chris's shoulder and bypassed her to get into the living room where he could see his wife.
He bounded up to her before she got the chance to see who it was and before (Y/n) could try and get up, Jim was already plonked down on the sofa next to her. He reached out and clamped his hand down on her wrist, his touch comforting but desperate at the same time as he leaned forward until there was barely an inch of space between them.
His knees bumped into (Y/n)'s thigh and he was close enough that (Y/n) could feel each rapid breath fanning against her cheek.
She didn't want to look at him. She didn't want to turn and see those puppy dog eyes that could win him whatever he wanted. She didn't want to give him the satisfaction. But when Jim tilted his head down and attached his lips to her shoulder, (Y/n) shivered.
She felt his hand let go of her wrist and slide round to cradle her lower back and when his other hand moved to squeeze her thigh, (Y/n) finally looked down at him. He was glued up against her side, his chest pressing into her arm, his fingers twitching against her skin like he feared she was a figment of his imagination and would fade away any moment.
"Baby…"
"Why're you here?" (Y/n) couldn't hide the pain from her voice and she couldn't stop her eyes from welling up with tears when Jim flinched against her. He squeezed her thigh tighter, shifting his hand up higher, testing the waters to see if she would throw away his touch or not.
"You shouldn't be here, you should be at home-"
"Not while she's there." (Y/n) didn't want to stay with Chris, she didn't want to impose on her friend, but Chris had more than welcomed her to stay.
She was the one who told (Y/n) she couldn't go home until Jim realised just what his mother was doing. The whole team knew how crazed Karen was becoming and they understood that (Y/n) was being targeted, she wasn't losing her mind or imagining anything or overreacting. Chris told (Y/n) to stay with her as long as she needed until things settled down and Karen was sorted out.
"Baby, come home. I've talked to mum, properly, I swear, it's sorted now."
(Y/n) wanted to believe him, she really did. She wanted to let herself sink into his touch and the way his lips were feathering across her neck, feeling her in without having to do much at all. But if Jim was just saying this to get her to come home, (Y/n) couldn't do that. She had to know that he was taking her seriously and he would listen if anything else happened.
"You didn't listen to me, Jim. She called me hormonal, and you agreed." Tears welled up in her eyes as she gripped his chin and tilted his head away from her neck so they were face to face. "I can't come home if you won't take me seriously."
"I'm looking at flats."
"What?"
His words sent shivers running up and down (Y/n)'s spine and she couldn't help but lean away from him. What on Earth did that mean? Was he truly believing his mum over her? Was this it? Had Karen well and truly got in the way of their marriage like she strived to do?
"Mum staying with us was- is, temporary. I'm trying to find her a place of her own, somewhere nearby. Then she's still close to home, but we have our own space again, just you, me and our girl."
His mum living with them had never been a permanent thing. Jim only agreed because his mum needed a place secured or else they wouldn't approve her for parole. She had to have that security and Jim couldn't let her rot inside a day longer. But he had always had the intention of helping his mum find her own place.
It wasn't healthy for her to be living with them and be so attached to Jim and he and (Y/n) needed their own space now they were extending their family. He was trying to get his mum a place of her own as soon as he could so they could all have a better, healthier relationship together.
When he shifted his hand up from (Y/n)'s thigh to trace her bump, (Y/n) couldn't help the tear that slid down her face.
He could feel her resolve melting away when he started to trace designs across her stomach with his fingertip.
Five days had started to feel like five weeks away from (Y/n) and all the team knew something had been up. Chris was the only one who knew the details, but all of them saw how tightly strung up Jim had been. He felt like he had been having withdrawel symptoms when he came home to an empty bed and he couldn't have his arms around (Y/n) or his hand on her stomach.
"Come home." Jim didn't take his hand away from her stomach, but the way his nose twitched and his lips drew to one side told (Y/n) he was one minute away from crying.
She saw a tear slither down his cheek when she nodded and that was all Jim needed to practically push her back into the sofa and steal a starved kiss from her.
She could feel his teeth grazing her lower lip and the way he smiled into the kiss as he took all the breath from her lungs, leaving her starving and lightheaded. He wanted both his girls to come home, he missed them more than any words could say and he wouldn't let this happen again.
He would listen next time.
***
A quiet, lulling hum filled the nursery as (Y/n) moved towards the window. She could faintly hear the music channel playing on the tv downstairs and it was loud enough for her to know what song was playing and to hum along to the music.
Her head ticked from side to side as she looked up at the window frame with pursed lips and narrowed eyes.
They had decided on a pale shade of lilac for the nursery with a bleached white ceiling. The colour looked beautiful and when the sunlight hit the walls just right, (Y/n) could almost see sparkles twinkling off the walls. They had finished the second coat over the weekend while Jim was off and now (Y/n) was just adding a few more details.
They still had another three and a bit months left until their girl would be here, but Deacon had told them it was better to plan ahead and be prepared. According to him, the last few months would go by in a flash and they didn't want to be rushing about trying to sort everything at the last minute.
Grabbing the chair from the corner of the room, (Y/n) dragged it across and took her time climbing up.
Her fingers scrunched around the dusty white curtains that had a mixture of burnt orange, beige and bright pink flowers painted across them. She unclipped one end of the curtain pole and started feeding the curtain rings on.
Once these were up, the only things left to do in the nursery was to put up some shelves, assemble the crib and sort the changing table. Then they would be well and truly prepared.
"What have you said to Jimmy?"
A gasp tumbled past (Y/n)'s lips and she wobbled, quickly regaining her balance before she toppled off the chair.
She fed the last ring onto the pole before she glanced behind her over her shoulder.
Karen didn't look happy.
The elder woman stormed into the nursery she had barely looked at since they started decorating it. If (Y/n) had thought before that Karen wasn't interested in her grandchild, she well and truly understood now. She could see the way it started to gnaw at Jim when they had been getting things ready and Karen could barely manage a smile. Whereas everyone down at Swat was more than delighted and listened intently if Jim ever talked about the baby.
"Excuse me?" (Y/n) took a deep breath to steady herself for the upcoming argument and she pressed her hand to the wall to climb down off the chair.
She had no idea what Karen was going on about and she was sure whatever it was, Karen was blowing it out of proportion. But she just had to do this now, when Jimmy was still at work. He would be coming home around about now, why couldn't she just wait until he got back so they didn't have to argue any more?
She had promised Jim she wouldn't argue or upset (Y/n) or fight with her. (Y/n) knew she wouldn't stick to it.
"He's looking at flats. He's trying to find a flat for me, he wants me to move out before the baby comes. What have you said to him? Why are you trying to get rid of me, he's my son I've sacrificed everything for Jimmy so I can be with him now. Why do you have to get in the way?"
"Karen calm down-"
"Calm down? When you're taking my son from me?!"
(Y/n) coiled her arms to her chest and took a strangled breath when Karen grabbed the nearest object and threw it her way. Thank God it happened to be one of the teddies Chris had given them, but seeing what she had thrown only riled Karen up even more.
She reached out for one of the coat hangers on top of the chest of drawers and launched it so hard and fast (Y/n) barely had time to move.
She bit back a scream when the plastic hanger collided with the edge of the windowsil and snapped on impact.
What the Hell was she doing?
"He's my husband, I'm not taking him from you. But you… you can't think that it's normal to live with us forever? We're having a baby, things are gonna change." (Y/n) held her hands out in front of her as if trying to act peaceful as going to make a difference when her mother in law was on the warpath.
"You little hustler. You're turning my son against me and I won't have it." Karen's voice heightened until she was at the point of screaming and (Y/n) winced at her pitch and tone.
She sidestepped and slumped into the wall when Karen tossed a paintbrush her way and when she threw the paint tray to the floor, (Y/n) cowered back.
She was aiming things at her. If Karen got hold of the screwdriver set or something heavy, she could aim it just right and cause (Y/n) some real damage.
"You and that bloody baby are destroying him."
Would Karen go as far as to hurt the baby? (Y/n)'s hand moved down to her stomach at the thought and she winced, feeling the baby give out a strong kick. She had no idea if Karen would try and come over to hit her or push or slap her or toss something directly at her, but she didn't want to find out.
She was scared. Karen had killed her husband. She had been so riled up and defensive over Jim, wanting to protect him that she had shot her husband in cold blood. Of course she had her reasons, she was a battered wife protecting her only son. But now, Karen was thinking of (Y/n) and the baby as a threat. A threat to Jim.
(Y/n) needed Jim to come home. She needed to go get her phone and call him to find out if he was on his way home or not. She couldn't stay here and argue with Karen who was only getting angrier by the second. Being here with her wasn't safe for (Y/n) or her unborn baby.
"You need to stop."
She kept one hand on her stomach and held the other out towards Karen, both to try and calm her down and to keep a good distance between them both.
Pushing forward, (Y/n) quickened her steps in haste and cowered down when Karen screamed. She bolted past her, giving Karen a nudge to get her out of the doorway so (Y/n) could fly past her.
Her phone was downstairs. She had to call someone. She had to get hold of Jim or Chris or even Hondo at this point, just someone that would help and not think she was overreacting or being silly. She had to keep as much distance between her and Karen as possible.
"Where are you going? You can't do this to me and Jimmy, he's my son! You hear me, he's mine."
(Y/n) couldn't help the scream that slipped past her lips when she felt a hand smashing against her shoulder. She wasn't sure whether Karen tried to punch her or grab at her, but either way it threw her off balance and had her falling into the wall that stopped her from going down on her knees.
She flung her arm out behind her, managing to scratch her nails along Karen's arm and push her back. She had to get away from her. She had to get downstairs and either get her phone or get out the house. Karen was trying to attack her.
"Get the Hell away from me!"
"Does your girl know you've invited us all round?" A wide grin spread across Luca's face as he leaned forward and grabbed Jim by the shoulders, giving him a little shake.
He pushed down on Jim, nudging the shorter man forward while Luca practically jumped up and down behind him like an excited child. It had been a while since the whole team gathered together to hang out after work, and this was the first time they would see Jim's new home.
Luca had spent almost five months living with Jim and (Y/n) two years ago in their old apartment. They had been gracious enough to put up with him for that long and let him stay and he had loved being around two of his closest friends.
"Nope, she wants to see you all though." Jim fished his keys out his pocket while Luca continued to shake him back and forth.
He could hear Chris laughing somewhere behind them and Hondo and Deacon were close by.
They had all agreed to come over for a few drinks, and Hondo and Deacon were more than willing to help Jim set up the crib he had been having trouble with over the weekend. They knew what they were doing, Hondo was good at fixing things and Deacon had four kids, he had done this before. Luca was the only one who wouldn't be so good with sorting out the furniture so he would stick to sorting the music. Chris knew what she was doing, but she was here to see (Y/n) more than to do any DIY.
"Course she does, she's missed us." Hondo grinned and shimmied his back pack higher on his shoulder as Jim finally reached the front door. They watched him make a big effort to wave his hands in front of the house, showing off with a cheesy grin before he unlocked the door.
Jim had never heard a scream quite like the one that hit his ears when he walked over the threshold.
It was so perfectly timed to when he walked inside that he thought for a moment that someone was playing some sort of prank on him. Like he had stepped on a trip wire and a fake scream sounded through a megaphone.
But he knew it was real.
He knew that scream was real, and he knew exactly who it belonged to.
The clouting thud that followed had Jim shivering and backing into Luca who in turn took a step back over the threshold. None of them knew what they had walked into. Had they interrupted a break in? Had some sort of accident happened? Had they done something by walking in at this exact time?
"No!"
"Oh Jesus- someone call 911!" Luca flapped an arm behind him, hitting any of his team that he could to make them listen while his other hand fisted Jim's shirt as if to make sure he hadn't vanished or fallen down with shock.
Jim bolted forward, feeling the team close behind him but he didn't care. He wrenched out of Luca's grip and took double strides until he was five paces up the stairs.
(Y/n) had fallen.
His left arm bashed into the bannister while his right knee bent out and punctured into the wall, wedging himself in place on the stairs so he could find his balance without falling down.
His hands were quick to find her neck, his thumbs smoothing over her jaw as he tried to be as gentle as he could to tilt her head away from the bannister. Her temple had been pressing down on the wooden beam until Jim turned her so she was facing him.
"Baby? Baby, oh come on, open your eyes for me." Words flurried past his lips before he could realise what he was saying.
His fingers pressed down into her neck and he winced, hoping he wasn't hurting her when he realised the grip he had but he couldn't let go. His whole body was shaking as he looked over his wife.
She was laid in the middle of the stairs, crumpled at an odd angle. Arms bent and stuck near her waist, legs curled awkwardly with one foot pressed against the opposite wall and the other hanging off a lower step. But she wasn't moving. She wasn't opening her eyes like Jim was telling her to. She wasn't even moving her head or acknowledging him.
"She's not waking up." Panic entwined in with Jim's words and he glanced over his shoulder, tears already streaming down his face as he begged any of his team to help him. To do something to make this better, to help his wife.
But when Jim glanced up, he wished he hadn't. He wished he never bothered lifting his head because the sight he was faced with made his stomach churn and had him gagging.
Karen.
His mum. Stood at the top of the stairs, one hand stretched out for the bannister to stabilise herself while her other hand was pressed against her mouth to cover her shock. She had tears streaming down her face and Jim realised she was shaking her head like she was trying to tell him she didn't do this. She hadn't wanted any of this to happen. But the guilt was written across her face.
The look in her watering eyes, the shock that was making her tremble back and forth like a lead. The way she was backing away from the stairs with little gasps and croaks.
She had pushed her.
When Jim heard Hondo's voice, it sounded faint and distant like his leader was calling from across the street instead of the bottom of the stairs.
Hondo's hand found Jim's shoulder and he quickly and expertly climbed over Jim and (Y/n), stepping over the entwined couple on the stairs with Luca hot on his heels. The pair of them bolted up the stairs towards Karen, both so they could stop her from trying to wander away and restrain her in case she tried to lash out at any of them.
"Do something." Jim's voice was oddly low but the desperation was clear. He spat the words with venom and he leaned into Deacon until the older man could see the fright blowing up his brown orbs.
Deacon rested his hand on Jim's shoulder and knelt beside him, leaning around to try and reach out for (Y/n). He pressed his hand to her neck to check her pulse before he gently peeled back her eyelid, but her eyes had rolled to the back of her head. Only allowing them to see the whites of her eyes with prominent veins crawling across them.
"Chris we need that ambulance." He glanced at the bottom of the stairs towards Chris. She had one hand tangled in her hair, a determined look on her face and tears in her eyes. Deacon couldn't remember the last time he'd seen Chris cry. "We can't leave her here like this, we need to get her down in the recovery position. Okay?"
He didn't want to wait for an ambulance with (Y/n) in this position, she was crumpled up like a piece of paper. It was going to hurt and if she had any internal injuries, lying like this was going to make them worse.
Deacon moved to try and hold her legs but Jim was moving off a different schedule.
He was already easing (Y/n)'s head onto his shoulder and curving her arms around her waist to keep them out the way so he could lift her up. Biting his lip, Deacon helped ease (Y/n)'s legs over Jim's arm and kept a hand on Jim's back to support him standing up on the stairs.
They walked backwards, slowly easing down the stairs until they were safely in the hallway and Deacon held the back of (Y/n)'s head and her waist to help lower her down.
"Airways are clear and open, breathing is good. Pulse is high… I can't tell if she's broken anything." Deacon tilted (Y/n)'s head down just in case she got a nosebleed or she started to throw up.
He tried to check her over but he couldn't see any obvious breaks or feel any dislocations. That didn't mean her ribs weren't broken or that she didn't have any internal injuries. They needed the paramedics here. Now.
"Two minutes," Chris gripped Jim's shoulder and gave him a little shake. She had dispatch on the line. They were already relocating an ambulance and a squad car down to them. This was an emergency and they would have help soon. Chris would ring Captain Cortez and tell her the situation, they would get hold of Karen's parole officer and sort this out for Jim so he could go with (Y/n).
"What have I done?"
"Street, you couldn't-"
"S-she told me. She told me she wasn't safe here, and I- I didn't- I never… God, what have I done?"
She told him she didn't feel safe with his mum. She told him everything his mum had done and he didn't believe her. He wanted to see the best in his mum, he wanted the family he hadn't had since he was eleven. He wanted a proper, loving, caring mum in his life, not one that sent him letters from behind a secured facility. He wanted his mum to get along with his wife and be involved in her granddaughter's life.
This wasn't how it was supposed to work. This wasn't the family Jim had tried to build. He hadn't kept his family safe. He hadn't listened to (Y/n) and now both his girls were in danger.
Why didn't he listen?

1. Hondo sees that Deacon loves you by how he looks at you.
Every member of 20-David is exhausted. The entire week has been spent working on a complicated case with numerous raids, two hostage situations, and no casualties. When the case is considered solved and is closed by the head detective, you all take a deep breath and prepare to leave.
“Hey, guys, I know we’re tired, but is anyone interested in celebrating?” Hondo asks, raising his wallet. “It’s on me this time.”
“Suddenly, I’m wide awake,” Street jokes.
“I’m in,” Tan answers with a shrug.
Deacon looks at you, and you purse your lips as you shrug. “Sure,” Deacon answers for both of you.
Of your team members, you’re the closest to Deacon. You’ve grown close over the years, and you can talk without speaking, communicate without listening, and naturally gravitate toward each other no matter where you are.
On nights like these, you and Deacon tend to sit together, but Chris drags you to one end of the table as Hondo stops Deacon to talk at the other. Hondo asks a question, and when Deacon doesn’t answer, he checks his face for signs that something is bothering his friend. Deacon’s eyes are trained on something across the room, his facial expressions changing from smiling to furrowing his brows as he watches… you, Hondo realizes as he turns.
You’re deep in a conversation with Chris, leaning forward across the table as you laugh and make small gestures. Deacon’s watching you closely, his expressions mirroring yours as a different emotion appears in his eyes.
Hondo learned years ago that Deacon talks with his eyes. Everyone on the team describes Deacon as ‘strong and silent,’ but he’s only silent until you learn to read his eyes. Hondo sits back in his chair, crossing his arms as he watches Deacon’s eyes. Deacon glances away, so Hondo looks over to see what happened. You look up when the waiter approaches to ask if anyone wants refills, and Deacon turns the other way before you can catch him staring. Hondo laughs to himself, but Deacon’s attention is back on you. Deacon leans toward you, likely unconsciously.
Hondo shakes his head as he answers for Deacon, getting refills for the whole table. He knows Deacon and you separately and as a team, but now he sees another way to know you. You and Deacon don’t know it yet; Hondo is sure of that, but he hopes he can get to know you together soon. Hondo realizes what that look in Deacon’s eyes was: love. Deacon Kay is wildly in love with you, and his eyes say it.
2. Irina Zemanova sees that Deacon loves you by how he protects you.
Irina trusts you more than Hondo. Though you’re unsure why, you’re happy to stay with her if it makes her safe and comfortable. She convinces you to go to the outdoor café with her, and you radio to Hondo as you walk out with Irina.
“My source says to go to the table with a bagel and coffee,” Irina tells you, looking up from her phone.
“It’s there,” you say, pointing to the table.
She sits, but you stay to the side, looking around for any threats or her unknown source. Irina is looking at something, and when you clock the man dressed in black removing a gun from his waistband, you yell for Irina to get down.
Hondo beats you to it, tackling Irina to the ground as you train your weapon on the gunman. He smirks at you before you hear more gunfire behind you. Someone pulls you to the ground, cradling your head to protect you from the concrete. You see Deacon hovering over you, his eyes glancing down your body to ensure you’re okay before he pulls you up.
Deacon moves to kneel behind a seat as you do the same, back-to-back as you protect the civilians around you. Hondo calls it in as the gunman gets away in a stolen Jeep. As he turns to yell at Irina, she finds a more interesting subject to focus on.
Behind Hondo, Deacon pulls you to your feet, laying his hands on your shoulders as he ducks his head and looks you over. You grab his wrist, getting his attention before you smile and shake your head.
“I’m okay. Thank you, Deac,” you say, assuming Irina is reading your lips correctly.
Deacon’s shoulders fall as his hands raise to cup your face, his thumbs brushing over the apples of your cheeks. He leans in slightly, his eyes roaming your face, catching on your lips momentarily before he pulls his hands away.
“This is all on you,” Hondo accuses, pointing at Irina. “And you will explain back at S.W.A.T. headquarters. You just made yourself a witness to a crime, so now I decide where you go.”
Irina tries to control her anger, choosing another subject. She asks, “Who are they?”
Hondo glances over his shoulder and tells her your last names. “And you nearly got them killed,” he adds.
✯✯✯✯✯
As Irina prepares to leave Los Angeles, she stops to talk to Hondo once more.
“Too bad you’re not coming with me,” she says.
“Oh, I would, but… duty calls,” Hondo replies, placing his hands in his pockets as he shrugs.
“We could be like them.” Irina points to you and Deacon with her chin.
“If they ever realize,” Hondo responds.
The rest of his comment dies on his tongue as Irina pulls him into a kiss. She steps back and makes a comment about why she did it; Hondo can’t exactly think straight after the unexpected affection. Irina walks away, slowing as she passes beside you, standing alone after Deacon left.
“You’ll be very happy together,” she says.
Your brows furrow as she leaves, unsure what, or who, she means. Irina returns to her home with the knowledge you don’t have yet: that Deacon Kay loves you, and because of that love, he protects you.
3. Commander Hicks sees that Deacon loves you by how he cares for you.
Hicks enters S.W.A.T. headquarters searching for a few volunteers for an upcoming police charity event. You and Deacon are two of only four officers present, so Hicks calls your names, summoning you out of the boxing ring and into his office.
“I know it’s late notice, but we need a few more volunteers,” Hicks explains once you’re in his office.
Deacon glances over at you and nods, so you answer, “We’d be happy to help.”
“What would we be doing?” Deacon asks.
Your head swims slightly, and you blink against the lights above you as Hicks answers.
“You would be working with the kids, I believe, showing them- hey, are you okay?” Hicks interrupts himself when you close your eyes and tilt forward slightly.
“Yeah, I…” you begin before tensing your facial muscles.
You don’t feel or hear anything after Deacon says your name. You tip back after losing consciousness, and Deacon rushes to wrap his arms around your waist, lowering you gently onto the couch beside you as Hicks calls for help.
“Paramedics will be here in less than five minutes,” Hicks tells Deacon, moving to stand beside him. “Do you need anything?”
“No, I’m just keeping her head up. Her pulse seems okay,” Deacon answers quietly.
Hicks watches Deacon’s jaw work, a storm in his eyes as he fights to stay calm. Deacon has always been open in showing that he cares for his team, but Hicks wonders if he would be this concerned if it were Hondo or Luca instead of you.
The paramedics enter the office, and Deacon reluctantly moves back, allowing them to work. Hicks lays a hand on his shoulder, not sure what to say to comfort Deacon.
“She’s strong, Deac. Whatever happened, she’ll recover,” he promises, hoping he’s right.
“I’m going with her,” Deacon says as the paramedics move you to a gurney.
“Of course. I’ll fill Hondo in and be by later,” Hicks answers.
He watches Deacon take your hand as the gurney is wheeled out. Deacon’s actions toward you are more than caring for a teammate; Hicks has work to do before he can evaluate your relationship with Deacon.
✯✯✯✯✯
Hicks knocks on the open hospital room door before he steps inside. Deacon looks the same as he did earlier, though Hicks knew he wouldn’t have left your side and won’t until he is forced to. Hicks smiles to himself when he sees Deacon sitting beside your bed, leaning toward you as you talk. Deacon interrupts to ask if you need anything, and your smile grows as you shake your head.
Hicks thinks you mouth, “Just you,” but Deacon’s head turns toward the door when Hicks enters.
"How are you feeling?" he asks as he sets a small bag by your leg. “That’s from Molly.”
“Tell her I said thank you,” you reply. “And I’m feeling okay. Thanks you for getting me help so quickly.”
“That was mostly Deacon. Do they know what happened yet?”
Deacon looks at you with raised brows. “Yeah, what happened?” he asks, sarcasm bleeding through under his continued concern.
You sigh as you turn toward Hicks. “I didn’t know it was that bad.”
Hick’s brows raise, just as Deacon’s had, before he asks for more information.
“Last week, I got hit by something during a raid. I thought it was fine, just a bruise, but apparently it was deeper than I thought. My kidney was bruised and there was some slight internal bleeding,” you answer quietly, picking at the hospital blanket.
“Why didn’t our guys catch that?” Hicks asks.
You remain silent, pulling your bottom lip between your teeth, so Deacon answers, “She didn’t tell anyone.”
Hicks laughs and shakes his head. He pats your shoulder and tells you not to do that again.
“I won’t. Sorry for worrying everyone,” you say, smiling up at Hicks.
“Feel better. Deacon will be here if you need anything, I suppose.”
Deacon nods, and you turn your attention to him as Hicks leaves. It’s just a glance, but Hicks sees that Deacon’s hand is under the cover, your hand gripped tightly in his. Even though they know what happened, Deacon can’t turn off the worry and the care because it’s ingrained in who he is.
4. Annie sees that Deacon loves you by how he touches and holds you.
Annie’s bed feels empty and cold. Since the divorce was finalized, she has slowly realized that the divorce was a mistake. Leaving Deacon was the biggest mistake of her life. If she had been more understanding or willing to talk to him, maybe they could be starting a family or working through their issues. Several months of being single have made Annie understand just how special what she had was. She needs Deacon back, she decides, and will do anything to get him.
Despite being divorced from Deacon, the officer at the front desk waves Annie through and hands her a badge. On the drive to S.W.A.T. HQ, Annie practiced what she would say. She needs to talk to him, and she’s not above begging him to give her another chance. Annie had Deacon once but made the terrible mistake of letting him go. With another chance, she won’t make the same mistake twice.
Annie stops when she sees Deacon and ducks behind a pillar as she listens and watches.
“So, your back hand will come around as you step out,” Deacon explains, his chest pressed against your back as he holds your wrists up.
“Front foot and back hand?” you clarify, glancing over your shoulder at Deacon.
“Yep.” He taps his foot against yours, signaling you to step out as his hand leads yours into the first move of a spinning hook. “From here, spin on the ball of your foot like a roundhouse and keep the hook pulled tight.”
“One more time?” you request, moving with Deacon as he moves through the steps, pulling you with him.
The movement pulls you closer to Deacon, and Annie sees he doesn’t mind. Not at all.
“Try one by yourself?” Deacon asks, stepping back.
Deacon’s hands drop slowly, his fingertips dragging down your arms until he backs away. He watches with a smile as you go through the steps slowly before taking a deep breath and doing it at full speed. The move feels identical to Deacon’s demonstration, but you look at him for confirmation.
“You did it! That was perfect!” Deacon cheers, his smile wide as he looks at you.
Deacon never looked at Annie like he is looking at you, but that’s not what catches her attention. Rather, it’s how he touches you.
You jump into Deacon’s arms, wrapping your arms over his shoulders as his circle your waist. Deacon spins you around before setting you down. His hand raises to your face, brushing over your cheek as he pushes a stray piece of hair back. Deacon’s touch is gentle and caring and so full of love. A kind of love that Annie didn’t experience. Deacon was never hers, Annie realizes, she just got lucky to have him for a while. His heart has been waiting for you, and she is no longer in his way.
5. Luca sees that Deacon loves you by how he serves you.
Luca’s grand opening of his food truck has come to the LAPD. He’s working, wanting to meet everyone and get a feel for how to best run the business. What better way to test operations and efficiency than feeding hungry law enforcement officers?
As he’s handing someone a plate of food, Luca notices you and Deacon standing side-by-side in line. The sunglasses on your face look suspiciously like Deacon’s, and his lack of sunglasses proves Luca’s suspicion. You turn your head and look up at Deacon, the sunglasses slipping as Deacon laughs at you, causing your smile to grow.
“Hey, man,” Deacon greets when he reaches the truck. “Busy day?”
“You’ve got no idea,” Luca answers. “What can I get ya?”
“Whatever you suggest.”
Luca looks at you, and you nod as you say, “Same for me.”
“Two suggestions comin’ up,” Luca replies before turning around.
You reach for your wallet, but Deacon grabs your hand. He shakes his head and hands Luca cash when he returns.
“Keep the change,” Deacon says with a smile.
“That’s against my morals,” Luca jokes.
“Then consider it a tip for the excellent suggestion,” you call as you step back. “And for keeping me alive.”
Luca laughs and waves before you turn around. Rocker steps forward to order, but Luca raises a finger to ask him to wait. Deacon’s hand is on your lower back, and Luca is invested in the affection and smiles you share with Deacon today.
“What are you looking at?” Rocker asks. He turns to follow Luca’s line of sight. “Oh. They finally together?”
“Not that I know of. Wait ‘finally’?”
“You don’t see it?” Rocker asks incredulously.
“They’re best friends,” Luca argues, furrowing his brow.
“Watch,” Rocker says with a laugh.
Deacon takes your food while you sit, then passes it to you before sitting beside you. He passes you napkins and a few packs of condiments and spices. You lean toward him to say something, then turn to eat.
“What are we missing?” Luca asks before taking Rocker’s order.
“You’ll see. Hopefully they will too,” Rocker answers, sighing.
✯✯✯✯✯
Luca’s eyes find you again just as Deacon stands. He raises his hand to you as he gathers your empty plate with his. Returning from the trash can, Deacon takes your hand to help you up. You jump to your feet, jostling your Deacon’s sunglasses with the movement. Deacon straightens the glasses against your face, smiling as you beam up at him. Your eyes are hidden behind the glasses, but Luca guesses you look similarly lovesick. Deacon has always been willing to serve people, but how he looks after you and provides for you is different.
“Told you,” Rocker says as he walks by, returning to work.
+1. Deacon realizes that he loves you by how you honor him and yourself.
Los Angeles is being hit by “the storm of the century,” according to the weather forecasters. The LAPD has opened several storm shelters, including S.W.A.T. headquarters. 20-David volunteered to help, and you were quickly separated from Deacon when you jumped to action.
Deacon finishes his assigned task and moves to a corner to look around. He wants to find something else to do, to help the people who need it, but he sees you and gets distracted. You’re rushing around, smiling kindly, as you help people. Giving out small care packages, finding blankets, giving people directions, everything you do is done with a smile, respect, and honor for yourself, your station, and your city. You care for the people around you, even though they were strangers before the storm.
Deacon watches you kneel in front of a small boy. His face is hidden, pressed against his knees as he curls into himself. You place a hand in front of you, palm up, as you say something. He raises his head just enough to look at you. Whatever you say works because he places one of his hands in yours.
Deacon feels something he hasn’t felt before. His heart feels like it’s being squeezed, and he’d be concerned if you weren’t around, but you’ve always caused unique feelings in him. This is different, though.
You pull the boy into your arms, standing as he hides your face in the crook of your neck. Slowing down, you look around before your eyes find Deacon. Smiling at each other, you walk to the quiet corner where Deacon has been waiting.
“Tommy,” you whisper, rubbing the boy's back as you approach Deacon.
It’s only been a few minutes, but Deacon missed your voice and presence beside him more than he thought possible.
“This is Sergeant Kay,” you tell Tommy. “He’s like a superhero. He saves people, but he gets scared, too.”
Deacon smiles as Tommy turns his head against your shoulder to look at the supposed superhero. Deacon’s heart rate increases with your comment and how gentle you are with Tommy.
“Nice to meet you, Tommy,” Deacon says.
“You, too. Do you really get scared when you’re saving people?” he asks quietly.
“All the time. Lots of things can be scary. But, you know what helps me?”
“What?”
“Remembering that I’m brave and strong. Like now, that thunder is super loud and scary right?” Tommy nods, and Deacon adds, “But you’re so much stronger than that noise! I bet you could yell or clap just as loud.”
“I could,” Tommy affirms, nodding against your neck as he smiles.
“One other thing that helps is having other strong people around you. Like the beautiful lady holding you?” You laugh quietly, and Deacon fights to stay focused. “She is brave and being around her makes me brave. Who do you have here that is brave?”
“My mom.”
“Well, then you can stay with her and make each other braver.”
Tommy nods and looks up when his mother walks toward you. You set him down and watch with a smile as he runs into her arms. He nods excitedly, and his mother picks him up and walks toward you.
“Thank you,” she whispers to you.
“Thank Sergeant Kay, he did all the heavy lifting,” you tell her.
“Thank you, sir,” she adds before turning away.
You release a sigh before turning back to Deacon. His eyes are fixed on you, silently staring at you. Furrowing your brows, you frown, and Deacon feels another heart squeeze.
“What’s wrong?” you ask quietly, raising a hand to rest on Deacon’s bicep.
“Nothing, nothing. I just noticed something,” Deacon replies.
“What?”
“That I want to do this.”
You want to ask what ‘this’ is, but Deacon grabs your waist and pulls you against his chest before you can. His lips capture yours, and you gasp into his mouth. Clutching his shirt, you push yourself closer as you move with Deacon. You’ve always been close and in sync, but this feels like the moment where everything you are and have shared intersects. This is the beginning of where your relationship was leading you all along. Deacon pulls back, looking at you with a smile while you stay close, your eyes closed.
“I,” you begin, pausing as you open your eyes to see Deacon. “I just realized something too.”
Deacon’s eyebrows raise, and his lips part, nervous as he waits to hear what you’ve realized.
“I want to do that forever,” you say, pulling him down for another kiss.
The way you treat yourself, the way you treat Deacon, the way you treat total strangers: that’s what Deacon thinks about as he realizes that he loves you. That he’s always loved you.
“We’re at work, guys,” Hondo scolds as he walks to Deacon’s side. You pull back and see Hondo’s smile before he yells, “20-David, they did it!”
Luca, Tan, Chris, and Street cheer, soon joined by a room full of strangers. You hide your face in Deacon’s chest as he walks out of the room, pulling you into a hallway to kiss you again. After all, forever is a long time, and he’s lost enough already.

Untitled. Part one.
Summary: Deacon wants to introduce his girlfriend to his kids.
Note: Reader is a fashion model in her twenties. Deacon and Annie only have three kids. To be honest I like him and the reader together and I see potential. I mean, jealousy from Annie's side or her coming up with the idea that Deac is experiencing some midlife crisis, the kids hating/loving her, the team finding out they're together, she gets into trouble and he has to save our protect her...
Warning: age gap, afab!reader.
PS: I told you I can't stop.
Tumblr media
Danica, the lead makeup artist of the photo shoot came over to you with a wide grin on her face, quickly sending the others away so she could tell you an important piece of gossip. You returned her smile as you leaned closer to listen, expecting something about the model who caused some chaos by not showing up.
But she remained silent for a little too long, and you began to assume it was about something else. And just like that, your suspicion was proven right when she finally spoke up. “There's a handsome silver fox outside with a police badge and he's looking for you. Jack is trying to convince him to leave if it's not related to an investigation, though, so if he belongs to you…”
“Oh, yes, he's mine,” you were quick to say with a bright smile. “Thanks for the heads-up, I'll talk to Jack.”
She nodded before gently patting you on the shoulder, giving you the green light to leave. Your makeup was done, it was only your hair that they had to finish before you could stand in front of the camera. They could surely survive five minutes without you, so you rushed out of the building to find your boyfriend and hopefully tell the head of security that there was nothing to worry about.
When your eyes finally fell on Deacon, you couldn't help but gulp from the sight. He was wearing a suit, something you always pointed out looked good on him, and when he noticed you, his face immediately lit up. You had been together for three months now, so this was probably the honeymoon phase making you this happy around each other, but you truly hoped things would stay this way.
His marriage ended shortly before you met thanks to Chris, and back then he wasn't ready to make a move on someone. But months later you met again on a night out with the team and he finally made up his mind to ask for your number. Long story short, he swept you off your feet with ease, and even the age difference wasn't enough to stop you from being happy together.
“Jack, he's with me. Can you let him in?” you asked with a sweet smile.
The man let out a sigh then gestured to him that he was allowed to enter the premises under your watch. Deacon leaned down to kiss the top of your head, already knowing better than to ruin your makeup, then took your hand and led you a little further away from people.
“Don’t get me wrong, I'm glad you're here, but why did you come? Did something happen?” you asked worriedly.
He was quick to reassure you with a shake of his head. “I just wanted to see you. But there's a change in the plans. Annie called; something came along and I'll have the kids over tonight,” he told you.
If he had the kids over, it meant your planned date had to be canceled. It sucked, but you were okay with it. His kids would always come first, and you liked that about him. He loved them more than anything, and it was nice to see how well he and his ex got along after the divorce. Were you jealous of their relationship? Yes, some days it was hard, but you knew they had a history together. You can't delete so many years with a piece of paper that proved you weren't together anymore.
“Raincheck?”
Deacon's smile returned as he watched you. “No. Come over tonight and meet the kids,” he suggested casually. You bit on your lower lip and avoided his gaze, showing the tell tale signs of your insecurity. “Hey, it's okay. I want them to finally meet you. Actually, I think Lila would love you. I was going through some photos of you the other day and there was this stunning picture of you wearing a purple gown. When she saw that, she said you looked like a princess and got all excited, saying she wanted to dress like that too.”
It was hard to hold back a laugh. You could imagine a young girl going nuts over the idea of wearing gowns every single day, and you could also imagine the way he was torn between smiling at his daughter and wishing she would just go to sleep.
Despite your good mood, you still didn't know if you were ready. Meeting the kids was a big step, one that he wanted to happen sooner than it would naturally occur. So you took a deep breath and stepped away, dragging him along as you walked back inside the building. Maybe if he began to focus on seeing you work, he would forget about this idea.
While Henry styled your hair, Deacon leaned against a table with his arms folded over his chest as he watched you. “You don't want to meet them,” he suddenly said. When you let out a sigh and tore your gaze away from him, he nodded. “At all or just yet?”
“It's too soon, Deac,” you admitted. “Look, we've only been together for a few months. I love you, you know that, but I don't think I'm ready for their questions. I need some time to figure out how to talk to kids first. I don't know anything about that, I don't have the experience, and–”
With a small smile on his face he came closer and signaled the hair stylist the step aside for a second. When you gave him a worried look, he just leaned down to place a light kiss on your temple. “Okay, okay, I get it. I love you too, no matter when you meet them. I can give you advice, don't worry, then we'll wait until you're ready,” he assured you.
“Lovebirds, I hate to interrupt, but if you're not ready in ten minutes, they will kill you,” Henry said, but then his eyes fell on Deacon's badge. “Not literally, of course.”
“Yeah, I assumed you meant it that way.”

It's beyond my mind how a person can be queerphobic and at the same time say they enjoy music from the 70's/80's.
I mean, just look at them and tell me they're not gender nonconforming in one way or another:

After finishing their takedown, Street and Deacon stand at their lockers, packing up their bags to go home. As Street says a quick goodbye to Deacon, he looks down at Deacon’s bag, noticing a book peeking out of it. He smirks, making a quick grab for it, looking over it.
“What’s this, Deac? Didn’t know you were a reader,” he teases as Deacon turns around with wide eyes, noticing what he was holding.
“Nothing. It’s just a book.” Deacon replies, trying to take it back as Street flips the book back over to look at the cover. He raises a brow, looking up at Deacon, a small smile forming on his face.
“Wait, did your girl write this?” Street says in disbelief, as Deacon sighs, shaking his head, a small smile making its way onto his face.
“Yeah, she’s been working on it for a while. Finally got it published. But she didn’t want me to say anything. Said something about it being awkward if anyone hated it, which is ridiculous,” he states. “I read it. It’s amazing,” he adds, nodding his head, his smile growing wider.
Street laughs at your reasoning, shaking his head as he flips the book open, glancing over a few of the pages, Deacon watching proudly as he crosses his arms across his chest, standing taller.
“Look, don’t let her know I told you. And don’t tell anyone else, okay?” Deacon whispers as he hears Hondo, Chris, and Tan’s voices getting closer to the locker room.
“Don’t tell anyone what?” Tan teases, smirking as they walk in, walking up to the two as Deacon grabs the book back, trying to put it in his bag.
Hondo raises his hands in mock surrender, noticing Deacon’s movements as Chris and Tan look over at Street, raising a brow.
Street shrugs, smiling at both of them, shutting his locker. Chris moves into his path to the door, crossing her arms, giving him a look. Street sighs, looking back at Deacon quickly before turning back to Chris.
“Deacon’s girl wrote a book.” he mutters, defeated. Chris scoffs, turning to Deacon, laughing softly.
“Why didn’t you wanna tell us? That’s great!” she says, Tan and Hondo nodding in agreement.
“Yeah, man. I’d be telling everyone I know. I’m kinda surprised you’re not,” Tan tells Deacon, patting him on the back.
“Believe me, if she’d let me, I would tell everyone. She made me promise not to. I’ve seen how hard she worked on it, and you should’ve seen how happy she was when she finished it. I even bought 10 copies when it was published, but I didn’t tell her. I wanna support her, but she’s being really lowkey about it, around people she knows, at least.” he explains, rubbing the back of his neck, smiling softly, finally able to talk about it with someone that will listen to his praise.
“That’s awesome. If I wrote a book, I’d make everyone I know buy a copy.” Tan jokes, opening his locker to grab his bag.
“Who’s writing a book? If it’s an autobiography you better make me look good,” Luca jokes, walking into the room, patting Tan on the back as he walks by.
“Deac’s girl wrote a book,” Street says, crossing his arms over his chest as he turns to Luca.
“What? No way! That’s great, man,” he tells Deacon, wrapping his arms around him for a short hug.
“Yeah, I’m proud of her. She’s always wanted to be a writer. Honestly, I was gonna tell her it was good no matter what, but it’s really well done. I hope she changes her mind so you guys can read it.” Deacon replies, face growing hot, thinking of you.
“Oh, and before we go, I have to show you what we found on our other target. We were able to find his ex-girlfriends address, it looks like that was his old stash house. There’s some stuff we found that forensics wants us to see,” Hondo explains, the team nodding, grabbing their bags before following him to the lab.
As they walk out to the main area of the building, Deacon turns, seeing you walking towards him, a tupperware container in your hand.
“Hey, you said you might have to work late tonight, so I brought you some dinner just in case,” you explain, leaning into his embrace as he wraps an arm around your shoulders, kissing your forehead quickly before you back up.
You’re met with a chorus of hellos from the squad. You smile, waving at them all, saying a quick hi back.
“Hey, I heard about your book, congrats! When do we get to read it?” Luca says, taking a few steps towards you, wrapping you in a tight hug. Your eyes widen as he says this, hugging him back stiffly, giving Deacon a glare over Luca’s shoulder.
Deacon smiles nervously at you, before looking down, fingers moving to pinch the bridge of his nose.
“Sorry, Street saw it in my bag, so he had to tell everyone.” he explains, looking back up at you sheepishly, before glaring at Luca as he lets you go.
“Was I not supposed to say anything? I thought you were excited?” Luca says, a confused expression making its way onto his face, his smile slowly disappearing as he looks between the two of you.
“Yeah, I guess you missed that part of the conversation,” Deacon says to Luca. “I’m sorry, I’m just proud of you, I wish you’d let me tell people,” Deacon says, turning to you. Your eyes soften as you smile softly, your face getting hot.
“He’s right. You should’ve seen his face; he just wants to praise his girl.” Hondo jokes, putting an arm around you, giving you a tight side hug. “If it makes you feel better, we’re proud of you too. We’d love to read it. Someday,” he says, giving you a wink as the rest of the team hums in agreement.
“Yeah. Maybe I’ll let you read it. But don’t expect me to give you a free copy,” you tease, biting the inside of your lip as you fight back a smile.
The team laughs, Street rolling his eyes, teasing you. “Of course. Wouldn’t expect a friends or family discount or anything,” he says, Chris punching his arm, shaking her head, smiling.
You laugh, looking down, feeling your chest swell with pride and excitement. You didn’t know they would want to read your book that bad. You look at Deacon as he smiles at you proudly, arms crossed across his chest, standing tall. He nods his head, a hopeful expression on his face.
“We’re not done with this though. We’re talking about why you had a copy of my book here when you know how Street is,” you tease, pointing a finger at Deacon’s chest as Street scoffs, feigning offense.
Deacon laughs, pulling you into his chest again, hugging you tightly. You put your head on his chest, letting out a long exhale, your smile growing.
“I’m so proud of you, baby.” He whispers in your ear, loud enough for Hondo to hear from beside you.
“We all are. You’ve got yourself a talented woman there, Deac.” he says, looking at Deacon, a smirk on his face.
“I know,” he says, kissing the top of your head, “I know.” he says quieter, loosening his grip on you, looking down at you with his eyes full of admiration.
“Hondo just has to show us something in forensics and then I’ll be ready to go. Do you wanna wait and we can go out and properly celebrate your book?” Deacon asks you. You nod, smiling softly.
“Fine,” you say, faking annoyance, leaning up to kiss him softly. “I’m gonna go say hi to Cortez quickly. Come get me when you’re done.” You tell Deacon, turning to walk to her office as Deacon watches you walk away.
“You did good, Deac.” Tan says, wrapping an arm around his shoulder as they begin walking to the lab.
“Yeah. She doesn’t happen to have a sister or anything, does she?” Street teases, which earns him a shoulder check from Deacon as the rest of the team laughs.

NSFW headcanons with Deacon (because I’m ovulating in that kind of mood):
(18+ only, minors DNI)
Tumblr media
Consent king. He’s always checking in to make sure you’re okay, are you sure you want this? It’s okay to change your mind, he promises he won’t be mad. If there is even the slightest hesitation on your part, he puts the brakes on. Will not continue until he gets a firm, clear yes.
This man is a switch and you cannot convince me otherwise.
He’s comfortable taking the lead, being protective, looking out for you, taking care of you. He likes seeing your worries shut off, knowing that you’re safe in his hands.
But he’s secure enough to let you take the dominant role if that’s what you want. Honestly, he kind of loves getting pushed around by you. He wants to see you thrive, confident, brave, bold. He wants to see your eyes light up when you step into his personal space and give him orders.
And he’s not gonna lie…the first time he submitted to you, and you had him handcuffed, with a vibrator to his cock…he never came so hard in his life. The way you giggled, so pleased with yourself, and kissed him after that…fuck, he didn’t think it was possible to love you even more than he already did.
Favorite position: missionary. All the way. He gets to cover you protectively, gets to see the glazed look in your eyes when you come. Gets to kiss you as much as he wants to.
But he REALLY appreciates a good pronebone. God. He can get so deep inside you, drawing out the sweetest wrecked little sounds. He gets to whisper in your ear and praise you, which he knows damn well will make you 10x wetter.
Cockwarming turns this man’s brain into a puddle of mush. It’s guaranteed to make him stop thinking about work 24/7. Strip down and wiggle into his lap. He’ll wrap his arms around your bare body and pull you tight against him, burying his face into the crook of your neck, while he closes his eyes and savors your slick tight heat wrapped around his cock.
Even though he doesn’t favor quickies, he’s still willing to do them. Especially when he’s expecting a call from work.
But he would much rather take his sweet time with you. Kissing you until you’re breathless. Caressing every inch of you.
Deacon is 100% into the longest, most excruciating foreplay until it eventually becomes straight up orgasm denial. He won’t rush things with you if he can help it. He gets so much satisfaction out of seeing you squirming, needy, and desperate first.
Sensory play. Deacon’s job has him in the most intense, split-second, high stress situations. So when he’s with you, he wants the opposite of that. He wants to slow down so you both can feel everything. Feathers. Ice cubes. You name it, as long as it illicits a long, drawn out, slow burn of erotic feelings, he’s in for it.
Very willing to incorporate toys, vibrators, etc, if that’s what you want. He’s not intimidated by a tool that he can use to bring you even more orgasms.
He is THE BEST at aftercare. Cuddling up with you, bringing you water and snacks, drawing a bath for you and cradling you in his arms as he kisses your neck and shoulders.

“Do you ever think…...”
“No, not really.”
“Let me finish….”
“You asked me!”
“Yeah, but I didn’t finish.”
“You don’t have to I already answered.”
“Not my question and maybe you should shut up and listen.”
You gasped loudly turning to look at him.
“Did you just tell me to “shut up” Jimmy?”
“Yeah, I di……”
“That was not nice of you!” you commented.
“What wasn’t nice?” Asked Deacon as he caught the last part of the conversation between the two of you.
“Street just told me to shut up!” You answered very dramatically.
“You did what?” Deacon blinked twice looking at Street.
Street sigh “That’s not what happened….” He tried to explain his side, but you interrupted him.
“That exactly what happened you told me to shut up.”  You pointed at him.
“Whoa whoa whoa what’s going on in here?” Luca came in with Hondo.
“Street told her to “shut up”” Deacon informed them.
“That’s not what I said!” Street said loudly.
“Hey that’s rude dude” Luca told him.
“I agree with Luca you should apologize to them.” Hondo crossed his arms in front of his chest.
Street stood there with his mouth hang open “What the hell is going on in here?” he whispered to himself.
You turned to look at him with your eyebrow raise. “So apologize Jimmy.” You told him.
He looked at you then at the three men standing there waiting for him to say ‘sorry’.
“Absolutely not! I didn’t do anything wrong!” he stormed out.
They all looked at you “This is the last time we ever back you up when you two bicker.” Deacon told you.
You smiled at him “Oh come on you love it when he looks so defeated.”
Luca put his arm around your shoulder “I really do love that look on him” he smiled down at you.
“Unbelievable.” Hondo shook his head chuckling.

HOLD UP — Roman Reigns x black! Reader
Tumblr media
A/N: not me attempting to write for this man and I’m supposed to be on a writing break?? I had a storyline in my head, heard this song from my girl (finally), and I’m about to go on a SWAT binge-watch once this season is over so that’s my excuse for all of this. Hope you have your popcorn ready!
WARNINGS: language, famous reader, slight cross-over with another show hence the tags, hint of toxicity, infidelity, crime, + me not knowing much about wrestling or S.W.A.T. but winging it! It’s only fiction!!! 😉
₊˚ʚ ᗢ₊˚✧ ゚. ₊˚ʚ ᗢ₊˚✧ ゚. ₊˚ʚ ᗢ₊˚✧ ゚. ₊˚ʚ ᗢ₊˚✧ ゚. ₊˚ʚ ᗢ₊
“You know what? Fuck her and fuck you too!” You yelled, smacking the food that was already prepared right towards where Roman stood.
It didn’t have to be like this.
What could have been a great normal Saturday evening, turned for the worse all because a man, who was supposed to be your man turned around and played you. How? By sleeping with the “friend,” (turned assistant) he told you not to worry about. You were just getting into a pretty solid choreo to Beyonce’s, “Tyrant,” over a steaming pot with the headphones blasting into your ears when your phone started going off more than your version of usual.
It was to the point you were ready to put it on Do Not Disturb but your gut told you to get into it. Sure it could have been anybody: your family, your manager, publicist, or even some friends…in this case? It happened to be the whole damn universe.
The headlines is what really got you:
“Entrepreneur Tribal Chief Roman Reigns Sex-Tape Leaked!”
Along with the shady subtitles underneath: The multi-business owner’s intimate moments at what seems to be one of his places of business the casino half hotel: “The Medallion,” have been leaked! By the looks of it, it doesn’t appear that the woman in the video shares any resemblance to girlfriend and actress…but does look a whole lot like his personal assistant Celosia “Losi,” Darlington. Perhaps they aren’t as secure in their relationship as actress…claims! See below for the steamy video.
At first you didn’t want to believe it, firmly wanting for your girl delulu to kick in but unfortunately you knew this time you could believe the headlines. The declined calls you had to keep hitting as you took a breath to just play the video. You had to see with your own eyes what had been done, it’s always about actions more than word of mouth and Roman showed you exactly who he was.
A no good piece of shit.
You met him back in ‘13 after taking on an action role, which would be filmed at the newly built casino: The Medallion. That same place of business that always got him into some shit—yet he always knew how to polish everything up so nicely regardless of any heat that went his way. Of course there was some attraction that formed over the six months of filming although he didn’t have a major role on screen versus behind it, his presence was surely felt. It took two years after that at the premiere of another film of yours for any relationship besides professional to form and sometimes you wished you would have stayed away.
This was one of those times.
To be in a relationship since mid 2015–minus the minor breakups just for it all to truly crumble now was the biggest punch in the face. And you may not be one of his Bloodline fighters but you were sure about to hand him one.
When he enters the house, not long after you’ve been going into a deep dive of everything from watching the video to various gossip websites and landing on Twitter of all places, you place the phone down face up as you rest your hands on the island counter. He pecks your cheek multiple times as he holds your hip, not picking up on the tension just yet before he takes a place on the other side of the island. Your jaw was set as you used the sleeve to wipe his kisses from your skin, eyes burning flames at the clueless man across from you.
“Smells good as hell in here. How was your day?” Is the first thing he says, finally looking up from his phone.
And you can’t help but to scoff at this, “it was going well baby, until I found out that you and your dick went swimming at The Medallion.”
Which lead to a heated stare from Roman, “…What’re you talking about?”
“Stop being stupid, Joe! Unless you can’t help it. Everybody knows including me! Y’all played in my face for who knows how long and you thought coming in here all regular was gonna be cool?” The pointer and thumb finger were jabbed right in his direction as you spoke before you were gripping the island so tight, it should have snapped but only quality was allowed in this house.
Roman kept his face straight as he clips, “I think you should start with watching your tone and talk to me with some sense.”
“Why? When you don’t have any?” Your head was tilted to the side, just begging for him not to continue to get smart with you because things will start to fly in a minute if he kept it up.
His big ass included.
Roman clenched his eyes shut in frustration before replying, “i honestly don’t know what you’re talking about, so please feel free to enlighten me.”
Humorless laughter bubbled past your lips as you decided to play this game just for a bit, “honestly, when’s the last time you saw Losi?”
His shoulders lifts, “a day or two ago. She’s taking personal time off, why?”
“Sure she is! Right on time for everything to unfold like the messy bitch that I told you she is.” You exclaim with your hands up in the air, “was this y’all plan all along? To humiliate me?”
As the silence filled the kitchen, it was shortly interrupted by the vibrating of your phone which rattled on the counter and finally the pinging from Roman’s own phone. A quick glance Roman sends to the device, it was a simple text from Losi herself which read: “I’m so sorry ro!”
He’s truthfully had a blind eye to what has been happening. Roman’s been back and forth between the casino and the ring along with a few meetings in between that he barely looked at his phone until he walked through his home’s front doors. There’s a furrow of his brows then at Losi’s text but it doesn’t take him long to figure it out when he thinks back to the accusations that you previously just thrown in his face combined with your attitude.
Your head was still tilted as you cooed with petty intent, “Uh oh…doesn’t look like there’s a smile on your face now when reading anything Losi says.”
Roman runs his hands down his face in exhaustion and guilt. When he opens his eyes, yours are still glaring at him. This conversation was going to be bad tonight whether he wanted to have it or not. He made this bed so now he had to lay in it.
“Babe—
“Na uh! Don’t start that shit now because you’ve been caught.” You held your hand up in the air, “Weren’t you the one who told me that you didn’t want to fuck her? Then you went and did it! When?!”
Roman runs his tongue over his bottom lip and bites down on it, “I don’t even—a few weeks ago? It didn’t mean shit though and I want you to know that. I don’t and won’t ever love her the way that I love you. I fucked up and i can admit that.”
If this was love then this man can keep that shit forever. Never did you ever think at this point in your relationship that the downfall would be Roman’s attention turning to another woman for a night.
“You can? Were you ever going to if this didn’t come out? You’ve been sitting on this for weeks and she’s been smiling in my face and more chatty—ohhh.” You knocked your finger into the air in realization, “she’s been plotting on this moment.”
Roman blinks with a shake of his head, “what? No.”
“You let the balloon stuffed booty fool you, baby.” You clapped, “along with the cute shy office siren thing she had going on the outside. I been knew she was feeling you and I couldn’t be mad at that! I knew what I had. As long as she didn’t try anything but it only took a year for you to fold right when everything was falling into place.”
He had another personal assistant who’s been working for him since The medallion began to stay consistent in flourishing, Ms. Charlene, who was older in her mid-fifties and actually good friends with your aunt. She was probably the best one Roman was ever going to get but she decided to retire early? And moved all the way out to Liberia but still did her original role as a tax preparer on the side but you didn’t hear that from me—your narrator.
“What do you mean?”
“Think about it, joe. The gym just had its successful grand opening after its bombing a month ago, you just announced that you were expanding the medallion to be worldwide with plans of doing the same for Bloodline. I’m hosting the Tony awards, you’re planning to propose, and Losi is trying to start her own business by creating some plant spa, which gives her just enough motive to leak the tape so she’s financially taken care of while we’re here looking dumb as fuck.” You deeply exhale while Roman pressed his tongue into his cheek in thought.
He didn’t want to believe that either but one thing about you? Your mind was always going and connecting the dots. He knew that there was something about Losi that you didn’t rock with and he didn’t see. When it came to his businesses he wanted to be the only one running things and sure he never wanted to make you uncomfortable yet he and Losi went way back and her resume was top notch. Overall Roman believed that the two of you could just coexist at some point, although Losi put in more effort to be friendly with you, you weren’t feeling it.
Ultimately you had to agree to disagree on the subject. It wasn’t a big problem until it unfortunately became one of course. He didn’t have the ring and it’s been in the works since last year but he knew what he wanted it to look like based on your preferences and kept the sketch secured and out of sight…so he thought.
He knew he wanted forever with you but he allowed himself to get stupefied by someone he thought was a friend and should have stayed in that place.
“Nah Lo’s not like that, she’s a good girl.”
Roman didn’t know if he believed that himself anymore but it still came out of his mouth.
You felt your eye twitch, “you keep telling yourself that and that’s probably what you praised her with when you were hitting it from behind too right?”
“Relax,” his stare is hard from underneath his eyelashes, as if he’s attempting to command you in doing so, “I didn’t know she was filming us, Alright?”
That much you could tell.
“Yeah okay, so that makes it better?!”
“No it doesn’t! And I’m aware of that. I want to marry you which you somehow know—
“Then why do this to me? To us?! We were doing so well and came so far just for you to ruin it all like this was for nothing.” You tried to focus on your breathing but from Roman’s stance he could see that it was more of a panting from you, to keep from crying.
The last thing you wanted was for him to comfort you but he did find himself reaching his hand out some over the island, just in case. He hated that this was happening, that he was causing you pain and not the fact that this was biting him in the ass, he knew what he had done and had to pay the price, he could take that but he didn’t like the twist in his chest at the sight of your anger, your pain, yet he didn’t really have a reason to justify this. There was no justifying the infidelity or the past gaslighting of your concerns you expressed once Losi came along. You had dreams and took that as a sign just as much of what you witnessed in person. Roman would always reassure that it was just your mind lying to you and being paranoid until he proved everything to be true.
“It’s not for nothing…we’ve been through so much shit together that we can get through this too.” Roman states with determination in his eyes, “I don’t know what exactly you want to hear from me but I’m telling you that choice I made that night meant nothing. It happened once, I was on one that night, should have known better than to let my guard down and I told her we won’t ever do that shit again because I’m in love with you. I need you.”
It was your turn to bite down on your lips and nod your head, “that sounds nice, really but there’s no way you expect me to just leap back into your arms just because you’re looking at me that and all the sweet nothings you hand over will magically make this okay when it most likely won’t be.”
He swallows, “What are you saying?”
“Look around! You can’t have that much trust in her to believe this wasn’t calculated can you? I mean you trusted her enough to not let your hot steamy night get out but look where that got you. A tape! You had that girl in my face, in this house, trying to get us to be besties long before and this is what y’all go and do? The disrespect is so real so…you know what? Fuck her and fuck you too!”
Roman dips in his head in understanding, even if he has to make a jump back from the plates of sides that are sent his way but that doesn’t mean he has to take it. “I get that you’re in your feelings but I’m telling you right now, I’m not gonna take any more of you talking crazy to me tonight. It’s been a long day.”
“Excuse me?!” Your brows are raised, “I’ll call you every name until the sun comes back if it makes me feel better—
“But that’s the thing, it won’t so why waste your breath?” His chin is raised in such arrogance.
It’s your turn to be wide eyed now. Did Roman expect you to just not react like he was good at doing? You studied him then, noticing how stoic he was but his eyes said different before he tightened his stare. He was letting his ego come out to play and that was a dangerous game.
“Hmm let’s see what will? Should I dump this gumbo right in your face? Mess your precious house up? Or get in touch with Jey to see if he has any insight to how quickly the success of Bloodline got back up and running. He’s been quiet since the grand opening and that’s not like our boy.” The smirk on your face was enough to get Roman to charge over to you and get in your face.
Jey was family, always would be no matter how ugly the business got. First it was his twin, Jimmy who Roman kicked out and you knew Jey was feeling not only a way about that but also Roman’s big headed authority. It was only a matter of time before Jey stepped down and you knew it was coming based on conversations you had. Roman also had a feeling that you knew more than what you were saying and withholding information was a huge negative, although you weren’t part of the business you would be if you took that title of being Roman’s wife.
You stared up at Roman sweetly while he pressed his forehead harshly into yours, “you don’t scare me and you don’t want to ever cross me, love of my life or not.”
Running your hands up Roman’s clenched torso and up over his biceps to grip his shoulders tightly you say, “well…this old love of your life, is about to show you just how much you’re gonna lose and I know how much you hate to lose.”
He squeezes your neck pulling you so that you’re nose to nose, “if that’s how you want to play, then you better not miss.”
“Great talk, baby. Now let go.” Her nails dig into his shoulder blades while it’s Roman’s turn to tighten his jaw.
Eventually he lets go, running a palm over his mouth as you get back to breathing although your insides want to ache but you numb it down. You crack your knuckles before reaching forward to wipe the crumbs off the counter into the sink and turn to leave but not without glancing at the contents on the floor.
“Hey, I think I would have loved being your wife but the world is always turning right? Better luck next time I guess.” You shrug your shoulders, “and you might want to clean that up before you get some ants that look like Losi. See you soon, Joe.” You explain with a cold wink that reminds the man to breathe after you leave the home for good.
Roman didn’t know what he was going to do just yet or what you had in mind but for right now, he had to sit on his loneliness over a meal that you prepared which he didn’t get to share with you at the end of the table this time around.
[2 weeks later…]
The saying April showers brings May flowers could apply here, depending on how you looked at it. It was difficult being back in your own space, once sharing it with the Cane Corso, “Atonga,” that Roman gifted to you last year for your birthday and what you sent back days after you left his house. You were ready to send everything back (or donate) but Roman wasnt having that, anything that got sent back to his place or his businesses he redirected most to your parents with the power for it not to be sent anywhere else.
As for Atonga, he was waiting for you on your doorstep one morning with a simple message attached: he’s closer to his mom.
The gift of Atonga was for protection and you built a strong bond with the dog, overall you’d be lying if you said you didn’t miss the boy so you didn’t put up much of a fight when it came to him. As for the outside noise? The paparazzi followed your every move even more so now, you didn’t keep your head down but you kept it on mute with every outing. You didn’t need the advice of your publicist on what to do because regardless you had your own media training due to previous work and would ultimately do what you felt.
You didn’t have to offer the world a damn thing.
Your relationship with Roman was one of the most trendiest relationships to talk about and it was killing them not to know much more of what was going on. However Roman gave some crumbs on the recent interview he was on and spoke some with the paps that followed him around but it was enough for people to speculate you have broken up again.
A relationship that had so many sides to it was stuck on being face up at this time.
Over these two weeks you weren’t cooped up in the house crying over this mess, you got to deep cleaning, self-care appointments: nails done, hair done, everything did, spent time in the gym mostly with a personal trainer that Roman never cared for but he mercilessly stopped responding to your meeting requests after the second day, which left you to train with the twins and Naomi instead, and being in the club with the widest of smiles.
After all that you were slowly getting back into work. Thankfully your manager agreed to put a pause on the work load until you were ready, where you got the outline on paper on how award shows were meant to run, then you would make the trip in a few weeks to see how the stage was in person.
“YO,” Jey calls out your name from downstairs, his voice echoing all throughout the house that you forgot he was even still here. Probably eating up all your food while watching ghetto ass Tubi or BMF—they were the same thing honestly.
Getting so wrapped up in the outline, you push yourself off your bed and head out into the hall and call back, “what I tell you about using your outside voice in my house, jey?!”
The barking that sounded as you got to the steps made you frown, actually making you put more speed in your steps as you went down them. When you peered up on the second to the last step, you spotted a familiar face standing at the front entrance of your home while Jey stood off to the side holding Atonga back.
There stood Miguel Alfaro, a ex-boyfriend of yours who sported his dark SWAT attire.
Tumblr media
“You got company,” Jey muttered as he eyed the pale buzzed hair guy.
Deeply exhaling you step down and make your way over to the men and fold your arms, “Miguel, what’re you doing here?”
“Can’t be anything good,” Jey adds while he continues holding Atonga by his collar.
Miguel blinks at him and then the dog, “Mind if you put him away so I can have a civil conversation?”
Jey sucked air between his teeth with a grin, “oh this little guy? He’s a sweetheart.”
Miguel raises his brows in disbelief, one hand that was resting on his waist moved to where his firearm was, which the two of you noticed. Jey met your eyes and with a nod of your head, he quickly pulls the dog away to one of the guest rooms for a moment before making his way back.
“You don’t look that happy to see me,” Miguel attempts to joke with a raise of his hands, “that kinda hurts my feelings.”
Lifting your shoulders you reply, “I can’t say the expression on my face would be any different if you didn’t have that monkey suit on but—
Jey snorts out a laugh, which he clears his throat afterwards once Miguel sends him a sharp look before Miguel turns his attention back to you.
Miguel shortly exhaled through his nostrils, “Right, this suit is actually doing you a favor so I’d be a little more thankful.”
“Whatchu mean by that?” Jey clasps his own hands in front of him, defense mode was activated now.
You exhale, “Miguel, I don’t have time for this push and pull shit you commonly like to do, so just spit it out so you can get out my house.”
“I see your attitude still hasn’t changed. I thought we squashed our beef and it was all love?” Miguel’s mockery was still there and highly irritating.
Tilting your head to the side you cackle, “was that before or after you trashed my character to the tabloids over a little relationship when we were what? Eighteen?”
Miguel frowns, “I wouldn’t call my first serious relationship of three years to be little. Which is why I said what I said, if things don’t benefit you then you couldn’t care less. Maybe that’s why Roman did what he did and you didn’t give enough.”
“You don’t know me you spineless bitch!” And you stepped to him but an arm goes right across your torso from Jey before he shields you completely from Miguel.
Jey shakes his head while Miguel breathed out a laugh as he pinches at his straight nose, “I think you should stop instigatin’ and just say what you need to say, bro.”
“That’s officer to you, bro.” Miguel clarifies with a sharp stare but Jey just mockingly nods his head back and forth.
“My fault, officer pig.”
You grip Jey’s wrist and move to stand beside him, meeting his eyes to show him that this was mainly your problem not his.
Miguel ran his tongue over his teeth in annoyance but to your surprise he takes the higher road, “you’re right, I apologize.” He starts but directs that apology mostly at you, “I didn’t come here to start shit, I truthfully came to tell you something that’ll benefit—that’ll be useful to you.”
Clapping your hands together you rolled your hands about, awaiting for him to just say what needed to be said since he first opened his mouth to you.
“It’s Roman.”
Both you and Jey felt your blood run cold at this.
Miguel flicks his eyes from the both of you as he says his next words, “He’s been out in Florida this past week and recently made a purchase on a building to potentially expand either The Medallion or Bloodline. Miami’s team been watching him since he’s touched down in their city but a major red flag went off after recent events.”
Both you and Jey shoot confused glances at each other.
“Don’t tell me you two aren’t aware that Celosia Darlington was found dead yesterday night off route 41?” He deeply scans their faces for any changes in their expressions, “It appears that she was in a hit and run accident, she was thrown from behind off her motorcycle and it’s being investigated by my team.”
Jey has his eyes in slits, “and you think Roman had something to do with it? You just said he was in Florida when this happened.”
“Correct, yet a vehicle registered to him was found on surveillance…which leaves us to believe that he knows what happened and who was driving his vehicle.” His eyes lingers on you for some time before carrying on, “Also the building he purchased in Miami belonged to Celosia’s step-brother, who has been missing since March.”
Massaging the space in between your brows you couldn’t believe what you were hearing. “What does Celosia’s step-brother have to do with Roman?”
“Roman loaned Celosia’s step-brother the funds to purchase that exact building back in January and her step-brother has a history of money-laundering.”
“Fuck.” Jey hisses.
This was bad, real bad.
Roman wouldn’t just loan a large amount of money without purpose, especially to someone he couldn’t trust. If he did this for Celosia’s step-brother, there had to be a reason and if he was missing? Then things really were turning to shit and it’s possible that Roman had something to do with it. However you and Jey both would never reveal that.
Miguel continues, “He’s been arrested and flown in to us. And I’m here to let you know that you’re also being suspected. The team will be here in the next fifteen so…that’s just a tip from me to you.”
“Why are you looking out for me?” You suddenly ask.
“Because believe it or not, I really loved you once upon a time,” Miguel disclosed with a soft sigh, “I want you to win and don’t want to see you get hurt any further. Especially if it’s at the cost of a grown ass business man who goes by: The tribal chief.”
“Aye, watch yourself. You’re not part of what we got going on, so you wouldn’t get it.” Jey warns while Miguel raises a hand in surrender, although he wants to laugh in the bronzed skinned man’s face, thrilled he could return the favor of striking a nerve.
Miguel looks at you one last time affirming, “fifteen minutes.”
“Fifteen minutes.” You dip your head, “Thanks, Miguel.”
“Ah, don’t mention it.” He winks, “but also don’t forget it.”
Which makes you roll your eyes although a small smile appears on your lips which Miguel mirrors with a crooked one. Jey breaks that up real quick, waving the swat member towards the door, followed by a forceful close of the door after Miguel takes his sweet time whistling along and eyeing the downstairs of the home.
Jey blows out a breath, “I see your type is assholes.”
“Jey, now is not the time.”
“I know sis.” Jey grips the back of his neck feeling some stress coming on, “I think I need to slide, hit up Jimmy, Sikoa and check on bloodlines where the rest of the family is most likely at.”
“Yeah you shouldn’t be here when they get here but please be careful…they’ll probably be on all of our asses now.”
Jey nods and steps forward to grip the side of your neck and place a kiss to your forehead while you hold your hand on top of his. “Can I take Atonga with me?”
“If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you’re trying to steal my dog.”
“What can I say? Everybody loves uncle Jey!” He pops his collar with a grin while you fan your hand at him as a signal for him to do so.
Fifteen minutes gives you enough time to set a timer, change from lounge clothes to another set, have a cup of raspberry lemonade, and have your bag near by ready to go once that knock came at your door. You kept offline because you’re sure anything you did up to the time swat came to your door, would be monitored.
You kept calm as those fifteen minutes came around quickly and took your time getting to the door once the harsh knocks sounded. Turning the tv down, you take some seconds before getting to your feet, remote still in hand as you head to the front door, eyes fixated on the tv as you pull the door open.
Turning to the familiar three faces you meet each of their eyes in faux surprise, “Hondo, Deacon, Tan? I’d say it’s good to see you but I’m sensing this isn’t a friendly visit.”
Hondo dips his head to confirm that as he says your name, “hey…we’re gonna need you to come with us.”
You blink, “okay…and it takes three of you to do that?”
“It’s a special situation,” Deacon tells, “involving your boyfriend—ex-boyfriend? Roman Reigns and his personal assistant Celosia Darlington who was murdered last night.”
They all watch your face at this news.
Sucking in your cheeks you answer, “Well…I guess you’re right then, it is a special situation.”
Tan and Deacon share a glance at your words.
“Target the people that had the most interactions with the deceased.” You nod.
Hondo tries to ease how this appears to make it sound better but he knows you’re smarter than to believe his attempt to smooth over the truth of your words.
Tan is the one to speak next, “You know it’s nothing personal and how this goes.”
You give a tight lipped smile, “right so…which one of you is going to watch me grab my bag or…do one of you want to grab it for me?”
How did you have ties to SWAT? Your father was part of a team out in Long Beach back where you grew up and did some work with the twenty division in his remaining years before a serious injury left him paralyzed ending his career. You ended up following in his footsteps at twenty-one, working for the LAPD and working your way into the S.W.A.T. field before you gave that up to…you guessed it! be a full-time actress once you caught your big break.
And sure they still liked to give you shit for “abandoning,” them but it was evident that’s not where your heart laid, although you proved how big of an asset you were for the short time you were part of S.W.A.T..
“You’re not being charged with anything so that’s not necessary.” Hondo states with a hand for you do so.
Tan mutters, “Yet.”
Which earns him a warning glance from Hondo while Deacon does in fact, keep his eyes on you. You’re turning off the tv, reaching for your bag, then heading back to the front door, and hold up a finger to step back and grab your keys off the side table by the door. They give you time to lock up your home before you follow them to the charger.
You’re quiet on the ride to headquarters and the men aren’t sure what to make of that but they decide to not press you on the ride.
There would be enough of that once you’re in the questioning room.
Holding onto the strap of your bag, your eyes are looking all around the building seeing how much has changed and what hasn’t. There’s mostly new faces that already made up their minds as they eye you on your way by.
Guilty.
When you see Roman in passing, in handcuffs being lead in the opposite direction by the commander, it feels like many films you shot before with this moment being in slow motion. Roman can’t take his eyes off you and you see just how everything was taking a toll on him. He may appear collected to everyone else but you saw the stress underneath his eyes, along with the longing for you in them and how his hair was left hanging instead of neatly slicked back into a bun.
You don’t owe him any comfort but you’re not sure if you want to see him suffer either. When you love someone, that means you open up your heart but what happens when you open it up too far and that person leaves it badly bruised?
Start looking out for yourself and hold your own, that’s what.
Shifting your head, you carry on as Roman is almost breaking his neck watching you leave from his sight yet again. He was waiting on his lawyer and had nothing else to say, which meant he was being sent right back to the holding cell while it was your turn to speak your peace.
“Colombian?” You quiz Tan who slides a mug your way with a plastic cup full of ice on the side.
Tan is half sarcastic and half joking, “only the best for our superstar.”
You snicker, knowing just how to get underneath his skin for simply existing before he leaves you alone with Hondo.
“Given the circumstances, you can already guess why you’re here.” He starts as he watches you carefully plunk the ice cubes into the mug before using your pinky finger to spin the contents together.
You sip at the homemade iced coffee, “Losi’s been murdered and the sex tape she made with my—Roman was leaked. Did anyone find out if she was behind it?”
“We can confirm that she was and was supposed to receive $25,000 for it but only received $10,000.” Hondo responds with his hands clasped on top of a folder.
You snort, “tough titties.”
“How so?”
“It’s evident that she was money hungry.” You notify, “I don’t get involved in Roman’s businesses but I know he had to be giving her a good amount since he didn’t have a separate assistant—that I know of—to take care of the gym business. Bloodline has much more value to him than the casino.”
“Right…because he comes from a family full of fighters except for his mother.”
“Yup.” You answer and add more sugar, stir, wipe your finger clean on a near by napkin and take another sip.
Hondo opens the folder and spins it to face you before spreading the crime scene photos along, “Was the money the last straw for you? Enough to make you so angry to chase Celosia down the freeway, run her down, get out the car, and finish her off with specific shots to the body: one to the Radial Artery as she pleaded for her life, one to the Aorta, and right to the head to end it all? Did it make you feel any better?”
You swallowed the coffee as you looked away from the photos to meet the bald man in front of you, “It’s real tiring, hearing how everyone dictates how I should feel or questioning how I am feeling because of some shit someone else did. I get by and no I wasn’t expecting to hear how tragically Losi’s life ended, yet I can’t say I’ll shed a tear for a snake.”
“A snake that also asked you for money over the phone after the tape got leaked and you laughed at her.”
You lifted your shoulders not bothered that they knew this information, “what else was I supposed to do? I didn’t owe that girl a damn thing after she slept with my man.”
“Then you killed her.”
You stare up at the ceiling in frustration thinking about how it was once upon a time on the other side, “I’ve played a criminal in a few movies, doesn’t mean I am one in real life.”
Hondo pushes his lips out with a shrug of his shoulders, “Sure but you’re also dating a crime boss.”
You laugh, “Hondo, are you forreal? No. Innocent until proven guilty.”
“You’re still covering for him.” Hondo sighed with disappointment, “we know that both the medallion and bloodline partly stands for some underground organized crime and if we can’t get Roman for the murder of Celosia then he’s going down for the disappearance and presumed murder of her step-brother. Along with drug-trafficking, aggravated assault, and conspiring to commit money laundering. When he goes down, so will everyone else involved with him.”
You nod, “that’s the thing…I’m not involved with him anymore and I don’t have any clue about any of what you just mentioned. I’m also innocent.”
“Bullshit!” Hondo slams his hands down on the table, “you know, I’d hate to see everything you worked so hard for go right in the trash because of someone like him. I thought you let go of Swat to have a different safe life but you’re in just as deep. On the wrong got damned side! Are you sure Roman ever loved you because if he did? You wouldn’t be sitting here.”
Those words had weight especially training underneath Hondo. It stung but one can’t forget, you were also part of this team not too long ago, so you would never show just how much it did.
“Hondo…are you charging me or am I free to go?”
Funny, Roman said the same thing pretty fast with the request to call a lawyer and they had more on him than on you.
“I think you should keep that seat warm a little longer and I’ll be back.” Hondo advises with a stern look before he scrapes his chair back to exit the room.
In the quiet you sit, one hand on the cup of coffee while the other rests on your lap. It’s parallel to Roman who sits in the cell, elbows buried in his knees as his wavy hair curtains his face. He couldn’t believe he was here, how everything was slowly crumbling all because of a screw up, although he’s had many voices tell him before that everything would catch up to him at some point.
He didn’t think he’d see the day, not when he was just getting started. It was just like you said, he wasn’t good at taking any loss and he hasn’t yet. If he had to lose it all then he was damn sure determined to build it back up again with his bare hands if he had to. And every king needed its queen no matter which way she decides to play her own cards.
Roman’s played defense before and his queen wanted to be offense. There became more than one head of the table (secretly) when he met you so perhaps now was the chance for you to make some shots, not all.
Lifting his head, he closes his eyes and cracks his neck before clasping his hands together.
And he waited.
The door behind you opens, revealing heavy footsteps that tap rather than clunk as they make their way around the table. A small smile forms on your lips at the rim of the mug as you swallow, lowering the cup back to the table.
The man in the tan suit chooses to sit on the edge of the table and sends you his award winning smile as he says your name in greeting.
“Rock,” you address the burly man, “what took you so fucking long?”
His body lifts in laughter, “I’m a busy man lady but I always make time for family.”
Which lets you know he’s made a visit to the bloodlines first. You didn’t call him but you knew who did.
“So how can I help?”
“Can you go back and make joe not stick his dick in Losi?”
Rock exhales, “wish I could but you and I both know that was a Roman move not Joe.”
Which you already had time to think over. You had your own stage name and persona you had to put out into the world. Except you didn’t do too much in the public where it’ll reflect badly on who you were behind closed doors.
“I know,” you breathe out reaching over to rest your hand right on top of Rock’s who turns his own to squeeze yours warmly, “doesn’t make it hurt any less though.”
He pats your hand with his other, “we’ll get through this, we always do. Just hold on.”
“Always do, my grip is vice.” You wink while Rock nods his head, getting back to his feet.
“So I’ve heard, and that’s why you’ll always classify as a bloodline and if you ever want a career change—
You snort, “ha! I think I’ll choose early retirement before I change anything else.”
“Hold up, what’re you?! Thirty-one? You’ve got more fight in you than you say, this I see. So c’mon and continue to give ‘em hell so that they’ll never underestimate what the vice is all about.” He rests a free hand on your shoulder, giving it a squeeze before the door is pushed open, revealing Hondo and Deacon.
Rock fixes his suit jacket, “my client and I are finished here.”
“Wait a minute, aren’t you going to stick around for further questions?” Deacon’s eyes are in slits, clearly finding this suspicious.
Rock sends them his beaming smile, “you must have forgotten how well she’s capable of handling herself. You have nothing on her and all of this is just theories. I give you the next thirty to forty-five minutes to release my client and if you’re not done by then, I’ll remove her myself.”
“You have no authority here.” Hondo bites.
Rock’s smile never falters although a brow threatens to arch, “ah, so you haven’t checked my credentials yet…huge error on your part don’t you think? Gentleman.” He bids his farewell and Deacon follows him out with a clenched jaw.
Hondo turns back to you, resting his hands on the cool table as he leans towards you, “the hell are you all playing at?”
Wiggling your fingers in the air you sit back against the chair, “I’m just an actress.”
“Yeah…well we’ll see how good of an actress you really are.” Hondo snaps as he begins pacing before folding his arms, “now start talking, from the point you found out about the tape.”
Rock got a head start away from Deacon, sneaking his way into the holding area which is empty besides the person he’s looking for. He’s whistling now, shades covering his eyes as he strolls through the quiet area. He knows he has to be quick but he also knows that Deacon has lost sight of him. Rock makes his way over to the cell, still whistling as he spins, pressing his elbow against the cell before tossing his arm back with a white slip in Roman’s direction.
“Uce,” is all rock says before he circles back around, still whistling and then exits back out of the area unseen…well that’s until they look at the cameras later.
Roman waits for Rock to leave his sight before he pushes up to his feet, walks to the space where the white paper is resting, covering it with his foot before he shuffles all the way back to the bench. Once seated, he bends an arm down to pick at the edge of paper underneath his shoe and carefully unravels it.
His eyes quickly peers over the words and a smirk appears on his lips.

Hero
For you, @spnshortcake !
You pulled your husband’s body close to yours by his belt. He cradled your face in his hands, giving you a deep, loving kiss.
“Be safe today, baby.” You said to him once he pulled away.
He responded with a smile, “Everyone goes home, darling.”
You and Deacon were both preparing to leave for work, standing between your vehicles parked in your garage. He opened your car door for you to get in. Once you were buckled, he leaned in and kissed you again. “I’ll see you tonight?”
“I will be right here, waiting on my prince charming.” You winked at him as he shut your door and you parted ways.
Deacon walked into the station with his duffel bag on his shoulder. He greeted his team mates and made himself a cup of coffee before meeting in the debrief room prior to their shift starting. Once the team was seated around the table, Hicks stepped into the room and began a rundown of what to expect for the day. Right before the meeting wrapped up, Hicks’ cell phone rang. He answered it and quickly told the team to suit up as all their pagers went off simultaneously.
“There’s a hostage situation at a bank downtown.” Hicks announced.
A few minutes later, the team was in Black Betty, heading towards their call.
“Hostage situation, one confirmed fatality, a few other injured is what we know so far.” Hondo said as he began reading the notes that came across his work phone to give his guys a rundown of what they were heading into.
Hondo made it to the bottom of the notes and saw the address of the bank they were going to. “Deacon?”
“Oh my god.” Deacon interrupted. He had beat Hondo to the bank’s address in the notes. He immediately pulled out his personal cell phone and tried to call you, only to be greeted by your voicemail.
Hondo knew you hadn’t answered as he watched his teammates face turn pale and tears well up in his eyes.
“She is okay, brother. We are going to take care of her, but I need to know you are safe to go in here with us.” He leaned forward, meeting Deacon eye to eye.
Deacon looked at him and nodded, wiping his eyes. “She knows what to do, she’s trained with us before; we’ve taught her what to do…” He spoke words, yearning for his heart to believe what his mouth was saying. “I’m good, Hondo. It’s my job to protect her.”
S.W.A.T. arrived on scene to law enforcement still getting a perimeter set up outside of the bank. The team lined up at the front and back entrance of the building, preparing to enter once given the go ahead.
Deacon was sure his heart rate was 180. He was scared as hell on what he might walk into. He knew you had been faced with losing him multiple times – how many calls had involved him getting shot at and he was unable to communicate with you until hours later? It was a part of the territory that came with being a SWAT wife. Even though he had put himself in your shoes before, or at least tried to, he had never actually been in your shoes and it made him nauseated at the thought of losing you. He made a brief mental note to love on you extra once you were safe in his arms.
Deacon lined up behind Hondo, preparing to enter the building.
Once they entered, Deacon took lead. One masked man laid on the floor in front of the teller’s desk, dead. There was no one behind the teller’s desk. A second body was found in the hallway leading to a back area of the bank. Deacon was initially unable to determine if the second person was a suspect or an employee, but soon noticed a firearm laying several feet away from him and decided that the dead man was likely a suspect.
The rest of the bank was cleared except for the conference room. It was the last hallway and room to be cleared. The team approached the door. Deacon took his stance on the side of the door.
“LAPD,” Deacon announced, his voice deep and loud.
“David?!” A weak voice came from the other side of the door.
As soon as Deacon heard your voice, he immediately opened the door, gun aimed, his teammates behind him.
20 David entered the room to find you kneeling on the ground with your knee in the groin of one of the bank tellers who had gotten shot. Your knee was holding pressure to gun-shot wound to keep him from bleeding out of his femoral artery, where he had been struck. Your 9mm was pointed right back at the SWAT team. Other bank employees were also cowered in the corner of the room to your left.
As soon as you saw your husband and his team, you lowered your weapon and began sobbing.
“The shooters are dead,” you said through sobs and hyperventilating, “We need EMS for him.” You nodded your head towards your coworker whose life was in your… knee.
“Oh my god,” Hondo said as he looked around the room.
“Oh, baby…” Deacon said simultaneously. If you didn’t know better, you’d say your husband was also on the verge of tears as well.
The team began getting the other bank employees out of the building. Deacon kneeled in front of you and cradled your face.
“You did that?” he asked, nodding his head towards the door behind him, referencing the two dead gunman in the front of the bank.
You nodded with tears still streaming down your face. Deacon glanced down at the gun beside you and immediately recognized that it was your personal firearm.
“Why didn’t you tell me you carried in here?” He kept his voice low to avoid any unwarranted questions. You both knew you would soon face plenty of those.
“Because, I didn’t want you to ever be in trouble for knowing and not saying anything about it if… something like this were to happen.” You knew that anything you did could fall back on your husband if he was aware of it – another part of the SWAT wife territory. The last thing you wanted to do was to get him into trouble.
“Are you hurt?”
You shook your head.
“What happened?”
You sharply inhaled as you told your story for the first of many times that day.
You were in your office at the bank when you heard loud voices followed by screams followed by instructions to “shut the fuck up!” Your heart sank when your mind processed what was happening but you didn’t have much time because very soon after, you heard a gunshot followed by more screaming. You pulled your firearm out of the holster underneath of your shirt, aimed it, and immediately met a gunman in the hallway. When you saw his weapon being raised towards you, you didn’t hesitate to pull your trigger.
The man was dead before he hit the ground.
You quietly made your way to the front of the bank. You peeked around the corner to see a second gunman pacing back and forth with the bank employees on the ground. His back was towards you and you took the shot the second that you had it. He was also dead moments later.
You paused and looked around for a third gunman. When you didn’t see one after several moments, you stepped out into the front of the bank to find the teller shot. No one else was injured that you noticed.
You had two male customers drag the injured employee to the conference room after you instructed everyone else to make their way there. It was a central room in the building. You didn’t know what was waiting on the outside of the bank for all of you if you decided to leave so you didn’t want to send anyone out. You knew you could sit inside of the room with your gun to neutralize any further threats that may find you.
It was fourteen minutes from the time you shut and locked the door, knelt down with your knee in your coworker’s groin, steadied yourself and pointed your firearm at the door. However, it felt like eternity. You couldn’t express the relief that you felt when your husband was the first person you saw to walk through the door. It had felt like an eternity.
Deacon kissed your forehead moments before paramedics entered the room.
Security footage confirmed your story. Ever since you and David began dating, he always told you that everyone goes home when you told him to be safe. It was a theory you had adopted as well. That was why you decided to begin carrying your firearm inside of the bank with you every day at work. You knew if it was ever discovered, it would cost you your job, but what was the alternative? Losing your life? Jobs could be replaced. You or your husband could not be.
And your suspicion of the following repercussions were correct – you were let go from the bank for carrying inside against policy. But, as you walked out of the interrogation room, hand in hand with Deacon, you didn’t care. All that mattered was that you got to be with your husband.
The rest of the day was long and you didn’t walk out of your investigation until the early hours of the morning. You were walking hand in hand out of SWAT’s headquarters with Deacon. You had been able to shower at the station and Deacon had spare clothes you put on, but you were ready to get home, take a shower with your own things and slip into bed with your prince charming.
The day had been so exhausting that you didn’t have much energy left for any conversation with Deacon and he recognized that. He didn’t pressure you to talk as you arrived home, showered, and prepared for bed together. He climbed into bed beside you and pulled you into his arms. Even as you drifted off to sleep, you were intoxicated by your husband’s scent – his skin, his beard oil, his body wash, and the spritz of cologne he put on every night before bed simply because he knew that you loved it. You were so grateful for the safety of David’s arms.
The following morning, you woke up still entangled in your husband.
“Good morning, beautiful.” David said softly once he saw your eyes flutter open.
“Mmm,” you nuzzled into your husband’s neck. “Good morning, baby.”
He kissed your forehead. “What would you like to do today?”
“Is spending the day wrapped up in you an option?”
“It most definitely is if that’s what you want.” He rubbed your arm with his thumb. “Are you hungry?”
“Is my name Mrs. Kay?”
Deacon chuckled. “Let’s go get some food, then we’ll come home and snuggle until you get tired of me.”
“Never.”
Deacon took you to your favorite coffee shop for breakfast. He chose a booth for the two of you and sat down on one side before pulling you into the seat next to him. He turned so he could pull you close to him and keep his arm around you.
He was never one for much PDA so this took you slightly off guard, but you had no complaints. You were so thankful for Deacon after the previous day’s events. He peppered your cheek with kisses while you waiting on your food.
“You know…” Deacon started talking after your plates were placed in front of you. You turned so that you were facing your husband while sitting next to him. “I know that you face the fear of something happening to me every single day I go to work,” he brushed a piece of hair behind your ear. “But I have never truly understood what that fear felt like – until yesterday.”
You gave Deacon a small smile. He caressed your face with his hand, softly rubbing your cheek with his thumb.
“Baby, I don’t know how you endure that every day you watch me leave.”
You reached up and held Deacon’s wrist and leaned into his hand.
“Lots of prayer…”  you started, “and it comes with the territory.” You winked at him.
“You know you’re a hero, right?” Deacon asked.
You scoffed, “Not hardly.”
“Baby, because of you all of your coworkers lived and went home yesterday.”
“I’m sorry that I didn’t tell you about taking the gun to work with me.”
Deacon chuckled. It was typical of you to disregard compliments that shined any light on you – it made you uncomfortable.
“Mrs. Kay, I am going to spend the rest of our lives never letting you forget how much I love you and how much you mean to me.”
He leaned in and kissed you. He managed to keep the kiss PG, but you felt every ounce of passion that filled the kiss.
You spent breakfast with your husband feeding each other pancakes and bacon, giggling and stealing quick kisses from each other.
“Will you go home with me?” Deacon asked flirtatiously as you finished your last sip of chocolate milk.
“Mmmm,” you smirked at him, “Going home with a good lookin’ man? Sounds like a fun time to me.”
“God, I love you,” he kissed you again.
You slid out of the booth, hanging onto your husband as you walked to the cash register together. Deacon paid for your food and drove you home together. When you got home, he opened your car door, helped you out, led you inside, and started your favorite movie before pulling you into his lap on your couch. You spent the day, snuggled up with your Sergeant.

It’s Been A Long Day - David “Deacon” Kay

It’s Been A Long Day - SWAT x Reader Drabbles
David “Deacon” Kay
Prompt: How does the team seek comfort after a difficult day on SWAT?
Pairing: Deacon x GN! Reader
Disclaimer: reader has children with Deacon, married couple. Vague mentions of police work, politics, fear of police. Reader and Deacon use gender neutral pet names (honey, sweetheart, etc.)
Word Count: 600
A/N: I am on Season 4 of SWAT which is full of complex and difficult topics like racism, Black Lives Matter, Blue Lives Matter, and more. I love the way the show handles modern day conflicts and struggles. I felt like it was fitting that Deacon would bring some of those thoughts home. He just needs to be comforted and supported!
The house was silent, save for the quiet crinkle of the page as you flipped through the book you were reading.
It was in this quiet that you heard the front door open and shut. Expecting footsteps to come upstairs to where you were, you continued to scan your eyes across the page.
After a few moments of hearing nothing however, you paused.
Why wasn’t David coming up to bed?
Concern furrowing your brow, you swung two feet out of bed and into your soft slippers, sliding a satin robe around your bare shoulders.
You stepped down as gently as you could, trying not to disturb your sleeping children, an action you’ve done a hundred times over.
In the same practiced whisper, you called out from the bottom step:
“Honey?”
The still form on the couch stiffened, then the tension released from his shoulders as you laid a gentle, warm hand on his back.
“What do you need?”
Deacon leaned back to look at you with appreciation. He loved that you didn’t interrogate him, scold him, or even ignore him.
You simply offered your unconditional support.
That’s just who you were and he couldn’t help but fall for you a little more in that moment.
“I just need a minute to…” he trailed off, unsure how to finish the sentence.
“Can I sit with you?” You asked.
Your husband made space for you, and you cuddled into his strong side, hip to hip, head to his chest, hearing that comforting heartbeat steady under your ear.
David automatically wrapped his arms around you, the stress in his body already melting away from your warm embrace.
Sometimes, he just needed you near and that was comfort enough.
Eventually, he released his hold on you and you leaned back, gazing patiently into his warm brown eyes. Tonight though, those eyes were lined with worry.
He lifted up your left hand, rubbing a thumb across your wedding ring thoughtfully.
“You know, this ring, it’s a constant reminder of our love, and our commitment to each other.”
You reached over and lifted his left hand, pressing your lips to the cold metal of his ring in silent acknowledgement of what he said.
“In the same way, my badge, it’s a symbol of my loyalty to the force, to my fellow policemen. And my dedication to protect and serve the citizens of LA.”
David leaned back and rubbed a hand over his tired face.
“But to some, this badge is a symbol of power. A power to exploit for their politics, or a power to fear of being targeted.”
He looked at you now.
“That’s not why I decided to be a cop.”
“I know.”
“It’s just, it feels like just being a good cop isn’t enough anymore.”
“Life isn’t black and white. It’s messy and complicated and full of the unexpected.”
“I know…I’m just tired of trying to defend myself. Protecting what I think is right.”
“You are a good cop. And an even greater man. I trust that you’ll do what’s right. Always.”
David pressed a kiss to your hair, but you saw that he didn’t quite believe what you said for himself.
“And if you don’t, if you make a mistake, you know I am here. Your team is here. You aren’t alone in this, David.”
At that, the deep sigh that your husband exhaled seemed to take some of the burden off of his heavy shoulders.
“Yeah. You’re right sweetheart.”
“Aren’t I always?” You smiled.
He chuckled and lifted your chin, pressing the softest kiss to your lips.
“Thank you.”

“Hey deac” Luca spoke up as Deacon entered the locker rooms. “Morning guys” he replied greeting the rest of the team. “Tan was just telling us about how Bonnie is jealous” Chris spoke up while they all got ready for their shift. “Bonnie is not jealous; I’m telling you guys she isn’t like that” Tan tries to defend. “What happened that everyone things she jealous?” Deacon asked.
“Last night we went on a date and when we were walking to our apartment in the hallway this girl was getting harassed by this idiot and I helped her out. After he left, she told us she just moved in and it happen to come up she also spoke Cantonese. I happen to mention it was so rare to find another person who speaks it by coincidence and after that Bonnie’s mood has been off. She won’t talk, she’s basically doing everything she can to avoid making eye contact with me.”
Deacon hisses feigning pain when he hears the story, “hate to break it to you man but that’s jealousy. I can’t believe you can’t wrap your head around this, she is jealous because that woman who speaks your language probably shares your religion and values growing up in a Chinese American home is now living next door to you. She feels less than now that she has someone to compare herself to.”
Tan took a second to process his words before he finally understands how it all went wrong, he never even thought Bonnie would think like that. “How are you still single? You should have girls falling at your feet” Tan jokes.
“Jokes on you bro, he does” Street says making everyone laugh as they walk out of the locker room to meet Hondo. Before much words can be exchanged, Hicks walks in with a case assigned to the team. “20-David, we’ve been handed over a case, apparently the financial crimes and the narcotics division can’t solve it and they want us to wrap up this up. Also, we have intel the man doing the money laundering are armed and dangerous.”
Hicks goes on to explain the details of the case to the team, saying a man who supposedly goes by the name Authur Lopez has been moving money around through other people’s business. He also may be using them as a stash house. The problem is no one can seem to figure out which business he is using to clean his money. “They know he’s dealing but they can’t prove it, we need to find the proof to bring this guy in”
“We may have a lead though, detective Chase that was previous the lead on this case said he found Auther has an old high school girlfriend who recently moved to town, we aren’t sure if they have had any contact but it’s worth checking out, she might know somewhere he might hide” Hicks finishes up letting the team take the case. Street and Tan both start researching your home and workplace addresses and they found something.
“She owned a bookshop, just opened a couple months ago, around the same time we caught wind of Authur and around the time she moved into town, her business could be the one she’s using, she sells books, it can be a good cover if her business gets traffic, and judging by the location I think she’d be doing well.” Street says as he pulls up the location of your shop on the screen for the team to see.
“I found her home address, it’s an apartment complex about 3 blocked from the shop.” Chris says and pulls the location for them to see. “Okay Street, Tan with me we’ll check out her apartment. Luca, Chris and Deacon you can check out her shop she might be there, she what she knows if she’s willing to talk.” Honda hands out their assignments and everyone jumps in a car their destination.
When Deacon, Chris and Luca arrive at the bookshop they walk in and don’t immediately see anyone around. They walk a little deeper into the shop and you step out from one of the isles the shop isn’t so big that someone can hide, unless they are in the back room. “Hi there, is there something I can help you with?” you say in a sweet voice.
At the sound of your voice Deacon whips his head, he stutters a bit when he sees you for the first time. Your hair fell curly down your back, you wore jeans that fit your hips but flared down over your ankles with cute brown sandals, you wore a gorgeous floral top that complimented your skin tone so perfectly. “Hi, Ms. Y/n? I’m Sergeant Kay, this is officers Alonso and Luca, we are here to ask you a few questions.”
You look up at the handsome sergeant standing in front of you and your brain almost lags. “Sure, happy to help” you smile at him clasping your hands together. You gesture to the chairs and small sofas scattered around the room for them to sit and you do the same. “Ms. Y/n, we believe a man you know has been involved in some illegal activity and we wanted to know if you had any information you could share” the girl who’s name you learned was Chris spoke up.
“Who?’ you asked her, “The name Auther Lopez ring a bell?” Luca asked you. Authur Lopez, you were never able to look at men the same after him, he was your high school sweetheart. You were going to marry him. That was until you found out he was dealing in high school and left him. “A couple months ago he found my shop, said he was keeping tabs on me and asked if I would consider giving him a job. Auther and I dated in high school, I broke up with him when I found out he was dealing, not only that but he was on them. I’m not sure what I never asked. When I hired him, he promised he was clean and so I agreed. Actually, his shift is meant to start in about 10 minutes, he has to come here.”
“What is he involved in?” You asked them directly your question to no one in particular. “We believe he dealing again, or maybe he never stopped who knows. We need to bring him in a find the location of his stash house before he can distribute his product.” Luca spoke to you.
“You’re welcome to wait here until he shows then, I had no idea he was still dealing” Luca made a call to someone while Chris asked to look around the shop and you agreed. Deacon didn’t move though, he sat right there in front of you the whole time. “Are you back together?” his voice was quite as he spoke but you heard him, “No, I’m not interested in starting things back up with him, he has done nothing but disappoint me, I only gave him the job because he said he needed it and he was getting clean.” you matched him tone while you looked at him.
He was so pretty you could barely take your eyes off him, if you weren’t looking at his chest printing out in the tight SWAT t-shirt you were looking at his chocolate brown eyes, if not that, the you have never seen a man look so good with a beard and that usually wasn’t something you’d go for, the hints of grey just did something to your brain.
Deacon wasn’t any different, he was too busy staring at you to realize you were staring back, he admired the way your curls look so full but not frizzy at the same time, the way he so easily got lost in your beautiful eyes, and let’s not talk about your figure, he has never seen anyone look so beautiful before.
“So, Sergeant Kay-”
“Deacon, call me Deacon”
“Deacon, you’re a SWAT sergeant what is that like?” you smile when you ask him. He was confused for a quick second how did you know he was in SWAT? Until he remembered he was working, he was dressed in uniform. “It’s good, I like it, it’s dangerous and it’s a lot of work but it pays off in the end. So, books?” he returned the question.
“Yea, I've always been a reader” you giggle as you continue, “It’s very calming to read, takes my mind off things when I’m stressed, a way to pretend you’re someone else.”
“How could you want to be someone else?” his tone was breathy, it had a hint of a chuckle in it, it made you blush. It was so easy to get caught up in him you forgot all about what he was here for. Luca walked back into the shop; the noise of the chimes pulled you back to reality. He was met with the sight of you and deacon staring at each other with flirtatious smiles and cleared his throat to get your attention.
“The others arrested Authur on his way here, they have him in custody. Hondo said meet back at HQ” Chris moves out with Luca and Deacon was about to follow them, “Wait!” you stopped him resting you hand on his arm to stop him from walking. You ran into one of the isles and grabbed a book off the shelf, “Here, an excuse for you to come back that isn’t work related. Now you can go” you smiled at him sweetly and he chuckled at your sweet gesture. “I’ll take you up on that.”
Deacon walked out the bookshop with a wide grin in his face and he sees Chris and Luca waiting for him with matching grins, seems Luca had filled Chris in and they both clocked the book he didn’t walk in there with. “Ouu someone’s got a crush” Chris said in a sing song tone.
A few days later the case was wrapped up and Deacon was sitting on a comfortable chair in the SWAT main room with his legs propped up as he read the book you gave him. He isn’t you paid attention to the book you handed in when you grabbed it but it was an interesting book.
He has been teased non-stop by the team since they all heard about what happened, no one can see him sitting with that book in his hand without saying something about you. They even went as far as to make a bookmark with your face on it and stick it in his book so every time he opened it, he would see you. It was entertaining the say the least but now that the book was in his hand and finished, he felt nervous to see you again, this time he had no motive to hide behind other than he just wanted to see your pretty face again.
“Hey Deac, we’re gonna hit up Luca’s food truck, do you wanna come with?” Chris asked Deacon as she packed up her things at the end of the shift. “I’d love to but, I have to swing by the bookshop and return this book y/n gave me” He waited patiently for the teasing and right on cue, “You going ask her out?” Chris was grinning like a school girl.
“I want to, I will, I’m gonna...maybe”
“Sergeant Kay is nervous? There is a first for everything. But seriously all jokes aside, I saw the way you looked at each other. She will say yes, no need to doubt yourself” Chris smiled at him and punched his shoulder as they walk out of the locker room.
Deacon rushed to his car saying a quick goodbye to the team and driving to the bookshop before you closed. He opened the door and say you writing something sitting on a high chair behind the desk. “Hey” he said with a small smile.
You look up from your book and smiled when you saw him, “You came back” you said matching his smile as it grew larger, “I guess my excuse to come see you worked, great book by the way, never thought I’d be into enemies to lovers but apparently I am” he chuckled and put the book down on the desk.
“I’m glad you liked it; I wasn’t sure you were the type” you giggled. There was a moment of silence between you. A moment where you just stared at each other, admiring. “I have to close up the shop now, it was really nice of you to come back Deacon, it was nice to see you” Deacon smiled at your words knowing exactly how you feel.
“It was nice to see you too.... hey do you want to join me for some dinner? I know a great food truck not far from here, we could swing by and get something” you wanted to burst with happiness, you didn’t think he had it in him to ask you out but he did.
“Of course I’ll go with you, let me just grab my purse and lock up” you smiled you sweet smile at him and you giddily ran to the back room to get your stuff, hearing him laugh at your antics.
When he opened the car door for you at the food truck you smiled and took a big inhale. He watched you fall in love with the smell of the food and you walked right up to the menu, “I don’t know what to get” you said to him, “Order for me”
Deacon was about to speak when he heard his name being called out, his team was still here. He turned his head in sync with yours and watched a bunch of people walk up to you both. You instinctively stepped closer to Deacon but you quickly recognized Chris and Luca from earlier in the week.
“I see you asked her out” Chris said.
“I can’t believe it took him so long” another boy said who introduced himself as Jim Street
“Oh, give him a break, it’s been a week” their team leader spoke up, Hondo. Their comments made you blush and you hid your face with your hands giggling. Deacon put his arm around your shoulder to shield you from the teasing while they laughed at the situation wholeheartedly. You're so happy Sergeant Kay came to your bookshop.

🔹I hope you all enjoyed reading! I’d love for anyone to Reblog my work, Like and Comment so it can be shared! I’ve been wanting to write for Deacon for a while and I’m finally starting!
🔹On another note. Deacon is hot as fuck. And I want to write him in a nsfw kind of way. Eventually not atm I’d like some feedback on how you would feel after reading my work.

Swat Masterlist
Summary: While (Y/n) is on restricted duties at Swat, she starts to feel unwell, but doesn't want to bother the team, especially her husband. But they have to race back to help her when they realise something is very wrong with her.
Enjoy.

Tumblr media
(Y/n) dragged her fingers through her hair and closed her eyes for a few moments. She took a few deep breaths through her nose, exhaling through her mouth to see if it would do anything to ward off the headache building up behind her eyes like a storm.
The deep breaths seemed to work, until she opened her eyes again. Black spots danced before her eyes and a gasp caught in her throat when her sense of balance became distorted. She wobbled to the left, slumping against the doorframe that stopped her from going down to her knees on the floor.
She swiped the back of her hand against her temple and rolled her eyes from side to side until her vision came back into focus. While her other hand latched around the tablet she was holding and pinned it to her chest so she didn't drop it. The last thing she needed was to break any of the equipment here at work.
It took a few moments for her system to level out again and a tremble rattled through her body when she pushed off the wall and held herself up again.
Maybe these infrequent spells were signals that she needed a drink or something to eat, it was almost lunchtime after all.
Being on Swat meant that for the most part, (Y/n) was used to eating a balanced diet and the work outs meant she at least drank enough fluids throughout each day. But it also meant that sometimes meal times were skewed and forgotten if they had a big mission or if they had too many call outs during the day and not enough time to come back to headquarters and eat.
She was used to it. They all got used to the varied meal times after a while.
The baby was changing things now.
(Y/n) had done well so far not to be too weighed down by morning sickness, she was relatively untouched by that side effect. But for the last two days, dizzy spells had started to become a frequent friend and (Y/n) wondered if it was because she needed a bit of sugar or a drink to perk herself back up.
She dragged her hand down the back of her neck and dared to glance her eyes down, feeling a smile creep onto her face when she noticed her small bump.
"Don't do that again," She murmured quietly to herself, letting her hand wander down to her stomach for a brief moment before she tried to carry on walking.
Her head tilted to one side and she blearily stared down at the tablet in her hand, scrolling through the dreaded pages of information that was starting to blur before her eyes. Each word was jumbling up from the amount of files (Y/n) had been scrolling and reading through today, let alone the last few weeks.
She made a slow walk out of the computer room and advanced towards the gym. She wasn't too sure where she was going, just that she wanted to get away from all the screens that were making her feel worse. (Y/n) was used to being up and running about for over twelve hours a day, she needed to keep moving around headquarters rather than sitting doing nothing.
She scrolled through the pages, not really taking anymore of the information in, but she stopped when a familiar voice caught her attention.
"So it's true then?"
Her gaze darted up from the tablet and she paused near the boxing ring. A grin formed on her lips and she lifted her head when her eyes locked on Deacon walking her way. He had one brow raised and he moved his hand to point to her slightly rounded stomach.
They were on different teams, while Deacon was second in command on Hondo's team, (Y/n) was in Rocker's team. They didn't often get to work together, but that didn't mean they didn't have banter together and they were often found training and sparring in the gym in their spare time.
Deacon was someone who (Y/n) got along with and someone who never teased or chastised her for her relationship with Rocker. He never said a thing about her being on her husband's team. No one really made a big thing about it, but some people like to jest and it did get tiring, especially when people tried to say that Rocker might just give (Y/n) special treatment.
"Yep, you've lost your sparring partner." Her free hand moved to her hip as Deacon stood in front of her with a calming smile.
(Y/n) and Rocker didn't want to broadcast the news, but things spread quickly at Swat and it couldn't be kept under wraps. Not when (Y/n) had to tell the Commander immediately so she wouldn't be put in harm's way. Everyone on the team had to know why (Y/n) suddenly wasn't going out on missions with them and was reduced to staying back at headquarters.
And once their team knew, it was only a matter of time before the news spread around the rest of the teams and the officers here. Word seemed to have gone full circle and got to Hondo's team now.
"You getting used to life behind the desk?"
Restricted duties had never felt so boring.
(Y/n) had the baby to thank for that. No more missions. No more walking- or sometimes running- into dangerous situations. She could accompany officers on house calls and work with the police on any cases they were helping with, but even then she couldn't go to big scenes in case anything happened. (Y/n) was a helping pair of hands and that meant she was almost always staying here in the computer room.
She handled sensitive information, found criminal files, floor plans and maps, building plans. She contacted the judges for warrants and made all the boring phone calls so the rest of her team could go straight out on their missions.
"Not really, it's so boring."
A jolt ran through her system and she almost dropped the tablet in her hand when a strong arm suddenly bound around her waist.
She let her head flop back against Rocker's shoulder when she felt his hard chest press up into her back and a soft kiss pressed into the top of her hair. She couldn't help the way her lips curved up into a grin when she realised Rocker had his hand splayed out on her stomach and his thumb began to trace up and down over her shirt.
"I think the word you're looking for is safe." He corrected, speaking into her hair as he kissed her head again and his eyes creased into a smile when he looked over at Deacon.
They were always professional when they were on shift, they had to be. Rocker was in charge of the team and he couldn't be seen to be going easy or paying favourable attention to his wife. If that happened (Y/n) would be moved off his team and no one would trust him to be in charge if he couldn't remain neutral and fair.
But now that (Y/n) was behind a desk rather than out in the field, they could afford to be a bit more open with affection. A hug here and a peck there wasn't going to be seen as Rocker favouritising (Y/n). He could hardly do that when she wasn't allowed on any mission, she couldn't take the lead in a raid and she wasn't out there with the rest of them.
They didn't have to be strictly professional when they were here at base, no one batted an eyelid if Rocker wrapped himself around his wife and gave her a kiss.
(Y/n) hummed and nodded. Safe was the right word, but boring fit just as adequately.
"So, you're a person down."
"I had to draft in Jones to make up the numbers." Rocker glanced behind him but he couldn't see where Jones had wandered off to.
Rocker couldn't go into situations a person down, he had to have enough people so everyone had back up when they went into unknown, risky situations. He had been given freedom to pick anyone he wanted to join the team for a short while.
It had been made perfectly clear to Jones that this wasn't permanent, he wasn't going to be on Rocker's team for more than a year at most. The moment (Y/n) was ready to come back off maternity leave, Jones would be reduced back to one of the lesser teams they had for bank staff and in case of emergencies. (Y/n)'s spot was always going to be there for her.
Before her and Chris, they didn't have women in Swat so there was never a part in the contract about maternity leave. But they drafted in the same terms and conditions for a regular police officer. And (Y/n)'s spot would have to remain open for her after her leave because if not, then they would be discriminating against her.
"He's got nothing on sweetheart though, and her pretty face."
(Y/n) snapped her head to the right and looked over at Adam who was stood near the punching bag.
He was a joker, but he was only jesting, he meant no harm. Everyone on their team had started to call (Y/n) sweetheart after they heard Rocker let it slip one day at work. They were all so used to seeing Rocker be distant and controlled and a bit stern at times, so to see him be soft around (Y/n), especially at work, was a rarity.
"Glad to know you miss me." (Y/n) murmured back while she let her upper chest lean back into Rocker a bit more. And it caused his arm to tighten around her waist
"Least we still get to hear your melodic voice through the comms, right?" It wasn't as if (Y/n) was on leave yet, for the next few months they would just have to wait to see her here at base and hear her giving them directions and information through the radio.
"Careful." Rocker didn't look very impressed. They were still at work and this was (Y/n) Adam was joking to and about.
The smile on Adam's face dampened and he huffed, giving (Y/n) a brief look of contempt before he went back to beating the punch bag. He had been told, and he wasn't about to push the boundaries and get on Rocker's bad side.
When Deacon murmured "I'll catch you in a bit," and patted (Y/n)'s shoulder, she nodded and watched him head past them towards the kitchen.
(Y/n) found her mind drifting off again but static started to build up in her ears when her head started to fog up and she felt like all the blood was draining down to her toes. Maybe she needed to go and get a drink to see if that would make her feel any better. She had felt better when she was on eighteen hour shifts without a chance to sit down, than how she felt right now.
"Okay sweetheart, I-" Rocker started when he finally found the will to move his hand from her stomach that was always capturing his attention just lately.
But he paused when he tried to take a step back and when his arm retracted from (Y/n)'s waist, she stumbled back towards him. Both his hands reached out and he grabbed her hips, stepping forward again to steady her before she lost her balance and fell flat on the floor.
His brows furrowed and he leaned his head down to look at her in confusion. She hadn't been leaning that heavily on him, he thought she would have found her balance if he moved.
"You okay?"
"Yeah…" She took a second to find her footing and make sure she was properly on her feet again before she twisted her head to look up at him. "Just wasn't expecting my leaning post to move."
It seemed a safer bet than admitting to Rocker that she had gone a bit dizzy and lost her balance when he moved. If she told him then he would worry and there was no sense in that. Not when (Y/n) wasn't going out on any missions, she wouldn't be putting the team at risk. She was staying here, doing the boring tasks no one else wanted to do.
Her breath got caught in her lungs when Rocker cupped her chin and tilted her head back so their gazes interlocked. The way he arched a brow and his lips set into a straight line had her stomach fluttering with adrenaline and made her feel even more lightheaded than before.
He seemed to study her for a moment, making sure she was actually alright and there was nothing wrong that he should be worrying about.
"Hm. Well I've got a meeting with the Commander, then I'll see you for the briefing after lunch, okay?"
"Off you go, boss."
She stayed put as he pressed a quick but searing kiss to her lips and her eyes followed him as he headed off towards the corridor. Shoulders broad and confident and towering over everyone he passed.
A briefing, then more and more paperwork until all (Y/n) would be able to see were letters and numbers dancing before her eyes.
She would be fine, she would just be bored.
***
(Y/n) could feel another headache forming and she dragged her hand across her face, wiping off the beads of sweat starting to glisten on her skin.
She wanted to go home. She hadn't been on shift for that long and already she was feeling like she would be more use sitting at home than hanging around here. She could barely read the files she was so dizzy, it was taking twice as long when (Y/n) had to reread each line to make sure she was reading it correctly.
It didn't help matters that Rocker and the team were already out on a call, so it wasn't as if (Y/n) could go and take a break.
When the team was out, (Y/n) was their eyes and ears. She read the maps, she scoured through the files and she checked the building plans and gave them directions. She had to be here in the control room and she had to be ready at the computer in case the team needed any specifics.
Hearing Rocker's voice come through the radio was calming and it made (Y/n) feel a bit better. She felt useful when Rocker was asking her questions and involving her, and all (Y/n) wanted was to still be part of the team and do her job the best she could.
Leaning forward, (Y/n) pressed her right hand down on the table that had three different computers open with different files and building layouts displayed before her blurring eyes. She leaned her weight on her hand and bowed her head forward as she closed her eyes.
Her other hand moved from wiping her brow to cradling her stomach that was churning with adrenaline and the need to be sick.
She tried to brush her thumb up and down across her small bump in the way that Rocker had become accustomed to doing, hoping it might do something to calm her down and make her feel better.
(Y/n) quickly moved her hand from her stomach to her mouth and held her breath deep in her lungs, willing herself not to be sick. Not here, not when she was at work. When the mission was over, she could rip out the ear piece and go hide in the toilets until her team came back.
She took a few calming breaths when the sickness subsided and tried to stand up straight again, but she realised she was starting to shake. Why did she have to become dizzy now? Why couldn't this have waited until tomorrow when she had a day off? Or tonight when she and Rocker went home? Why when she was in the middle of a call?
"(Y/n)?"
"Hm?" She tried to tune back into the conversation and listen to Rocker and the team rattling through the speaker clipped around her ear.
"The building, when did construction start?" The slight hesitation in Rocker's voice silently told (Y/n) that he had already asked that question and she must have tuned him out while she tried to quench her sickness.
Her trembling hands moved to the counter and she leaned forward, squinting hard to look at the different computer screens to find the right one.
Why were they all so bright? Why were they a mix of hazy blue, brilliant white and tiny black letters that were almost indecisive? Why was it so hard to focus on what she was trying to read when only a few days ago she hadn't been having these problems or headaches of this magnitude?
"Two weeks ago." She knew her voice sounded feeble but she tried to take deep breaths and control each word. She didn't want Rocker worrying because worry caused distractions and they couldn't afford to be distracted, not in their line of work.
Twisting to look at the screen on her left, (Y/n) followed the little red dot that was bleeping every second and steadily moving forwards. It was the tracker on the jeep the team were in. She was keeping track of them, guiding them towards the building because she had a layout of the city and the traffic updates.
If there were any accidents or collisions or road works, (Y/n) would see them before the team and she could divert them a different way.
Her blinking eyes pushed away tears as she used her trembling finger to follow the little blinking dot and try to figure out how close they were to the building they were going to burst into.
"Turn left, Joe."
She arched her back out again and looked to a different screen once she heard him mutter a quiet but confident 'okay'. While Hondo had Luca as their dedicated driver, Rocker's team had Joe and he had a need for speed. He was their go to driver.
"Damn it- Rock, that's a one way street, I can't go that way." Confusion plastered across Joe's face and he slammed his hand down on the steering wheel.
Why had (Y/n) directed him the wrong way down a one way street?
He turned in his seat to lean out the window, hand clinging to the open windowsill as he revved the engine and put it into reverse. He sped down the street, hearing the tyres screech against the gravel as he spun to the left and got them back on the road they had previously been driving on.
They couldn't be doing that. (Y/n) couldn't be directing them down the wrong roads it would only cause delays and if he went the wrong way down that road he could cause a crash and get them all into trouble that they didn't need.
"Brooke street?" There was hesitation in (Y/n)'s voice which took the whole team by surprise and they shared odd looks with one another.
"What, no that's across town, what map are you reading, Rock?"
"Alright, give it a rest. Carry on ahead and take the next right, we're still on track." Rocker leaned forward and swatted his hand down on Joe's shoulder, a silent warning for him to let this go.
There was no need for him to get snappy with (Y/n), she had made a minor mistake and it wasn't going to derail the plan or cause any backfire. They were still on time and on the right road, they could take a different diversion. Rocker didn't want any of the team snapping and arguing with each other, much less arguing with (Y/n) when she wasn't even here and she was doing her best.
She was doing the job no one else wanted to do back at headquarters, they didn't have to give her a hard time about it.
"Do you have the building layout to send me?" Rocker looked down at the tablet in his hand and waited patiently for (Y/n) to send the document over.
He needed a visual of the inside of the building so they weren't going to get stumped or confused when they barged in. And they needed to know the emergency exits in case anyone inside tried to make a quick escape or in case any of them got delayed and had to find a different way out.
When an email popped up, Rocker opened it and started scanning through, but his head ticked to one side and his brows furrowed in confusion.
"Boss?" Adam leaned over to try and look at the tablet but he pulled back when Rocker sat up straight with a perplexed look.
"No, (Y/n) I need the layout-" He paused mid-sentence when he heard her murmur 'no' and something else that none of them could quite make out in the background.
What was she doing?
"Rock, you good?"
Each of them began to feel anxious when they didn't get a reply. This wasn't like (Y/n). She was usually on form with everything. And while she had been confined to headquarters, she had done them all proud and made it her mission to do the best she could. She was usually on hand with sending over information and she redirected them faster than Joe could comprehend or try to catch up.
She made jokes and she kept them talking and fed them information like she was a record that couldn't stop. She was great at her job, but she seemed off kilter today. Something wasn't right and it was putting them all on edge.
Rocker heard Joe mumble "Is she okay?" and he was glad he detected worry in his voice and not sarcasm.
"(Y/n) what's the matter?" A dark tone flooded Rocker's voice as a gritty edge cut along his words.
He knew his wife and he could tell there was something strange in her voice, it was like she wasn't giving them her full attention. Like something was going on back at the base that none of them knew about.
He rolled his lips together and moved his hand to cover his ear to try and listen better to the distant sounds coming through the comms. He could hear (Y/n) tapping something and after a second or two, he was sure she muttered 'it's broken'.
Had a piece of equipment broke? Had one of the computers crashed and that was what was causing the slight disruption and (Y/n)'s lack of focus?
When a quiet but nevertheless audible "Good," came through the speaker, Rocker let out a breath he didn't realise he had been holding in. Maybe she had fixed something.
"How many people are inside?"
"F-five… six…?" Her reply sounded more like a question and the broken fragments of answers made Rocker grit his teeth. What was wrong with his wife today?
"Which is it?"
Rocker's eyes snapped up to look at Josh and his look was one that could have killed. Something wasn't right and he didn't need the team getting impatient and rude with (Y/n).
"(Y/n)?" He couldn't help the edge of worry that slipped into his voice and he knew all the team could sense it. They could sense how he was holding himself with a bit more unease and a lot more tension and it was lowering his patience.
The words 'are you okay' were on the tip of Rocker's tongue and he was about to break and let the concerned side of him show until (Y/n)'s voice came through the speaker again.
"Six."
There was a bit more determination in her voice and six sounded about right for the suspects they had been informed about and were here to arrest. They didn't need anymore information yet and Rocker could see they were almost at the building now.
"Everybody out. Stay sharp, no heroics."
He had to push the worry to the back of his mind, but even as he climbed out the truck and headed to the front of the group, he could see (Y/n)'s image flashing before his eyes.
Was she okay?
***
The call out couldn't have ended a moment sooner. When the team were gathered back around the truck, Rocker took off his helmet and tilted his head back as his eyes fell closed.
He took a moment to catch his breath back and gather his wits and senses before he turned his attention to the ear piece wedged in his ear. He hadn't heard (Y/n) speak for a while, although that would be because the team had infiltrated the building and were giving their locations to each other. (Y/n) would only pipe up if something was wrong or she was going to give them some valuable information.
"(Y/n), let Hicks know we've handed the suspects over, and then I think you need to let someone else take over the comms."
Rocker did his best to control his tone and make sure (Y/n) knew he wasn't trying to reprimand her for anything and he wasn't angry. He was worried. Whatever happened during that mission wasn't normal, (Y/n) didn't sound well and Rocker needed her to go and take a break and let someone else guide them over the comms system for their next call out.
He waved at the team and pointed to the truck, a silent command for them to get inside so they could all head back to base.
"Hurts…"
"What?" A panic-stricken expression fell over Rocker's face as he bristled and stopped in his tracks.
Everyone heard it.
All of them heard (Y/n)'s frail, croaky voice through the comms and each of them frowned at one another and paused, straining their ears to listen for any sound or other words in the background.
"(Y/n)? Sweetheart talk to me."
No one commented about the nickname, they were too panicked to make light and joke of the word. Besides, that would have been normal over the comms anyway, there was no chance of being classed unprofessional over the line with a few nicknames or caring words here and there.
A jolt ran through them all when Rocker slammed his hand down on the side of the truck and clambered inside with Josh following after him.
"Get us back to base now." The words hissed past Rocker's lips while his back straightened and pressed up against the wall and his hands began to tap and clench over his thighs.
(Y/n) wasn't responding. She wasn't answering any of them, she had been acting funny and not seeming herself over the radio for a while now and she had just told them something hurt. She wasn't well and Rocker needed to get back to base as soon as possible and find out what was going on with his wife.
The ride back was as chaotic as it was uncomfortable. None of them spoke other than to whisper (Y/n)'s name through the comms and wait in vain to see if she responded. They all clung to the hand rails above their heads and felt like sardines being squashed about with the sharp cutting corners Joe was taking and the speed he drove to get them back. All with the lights blazing so other drivers on the road knew to get out his way.
They were in a hurry.
Before the truck was even in park, Rocker was throwing the back doors open and climbing down. His feet barely touched the floor as he bolted to the side door, swiping his keycard across to get himself inside as fast as humanly possible.
He unclipped his bullet proof vest and hooked it over his head, tossing it down on one of the work benches he past. He wasn't sure where he was heading. Would (Y/n) still be in the computer room? Would she have tried to go to the toilets if she felt ill? Maybe she had gone to the kitchen for something or to be out the way of others? Would she be in the locker room?
He had no idea, but his first instinct was to check the computer room because that was where she had to of been when they were on their mission. She had been feeding them information, granted, she had been confused, but she would of been in that room with the monitors and the GPS tracking system and the big screen.
His boots thundered against the floor as he skidded round a corner, almost crashing into Hondo on his way past. He waved a hand at the other team leader, barely sparing a glance his way as he rushed ahead and burst into the computer room.
His rabid eyes roamed around the room but his heart jumped up into his throat when he set his sights on his wife.
He could barely see her. (Y/n) was on her knees in front of the desk in the centre of the room. Her arms were hidden against her chest and her upper body was curled over her knees with her forehead tucked down against the floor. She looked like she was in some kind of safe position as if she were on an aeroplane about to crash land.
Rocker bolted forward and crashed down to his knees beside her. He didn't quite know what to do or where to try and touch her, he wasn't even sure if she was conscious or not.
"Rocker, everything alright in here?"
"Boss, is she okay?"
Hondo and the rest of Rocker's team crowded in the doorway, no one brave enough to step over the threshold and crowd the couple, but everyone desperate to see inside and find out what was going on.
"Someone get me a first aid kit."
When Rocker heard footsteps disappearing which meant someone had heeded his orders, he shuffled a bit closer to (Y/n). He did his best to wiggle an arm between her knees and her chest and with his other hand braced on the back of her neck, he carefully reeled her back up so they were level. He leaned forward to get within (Y/n)'s line of sight and he could of cried when he saw her eyes flutter and squint to try and focus on him.
"Sweetheart, talk to me. What's the matter, hm?" He brushed his thumb across her chin and tilted her head back when she tried to flop her head forward.
He could feel his jaw grinding down hard when he moved his hand to press against her forehead.
She was burning up. Sweat was trickling down her skin and coating her arms and Rocker realised she was subtly trembling. It didn't help that he couldn't be certain whether she had passed out and just come round again or if she had stayed conscious all this time.
"Felt dizzy, a-and drained." (Y/n) couldn't help but whimper when Rocker's hand left her temple and she found herself leaning forward, chasing his touch. She tried to flop forward into him but her breath caught in her lungs when his hand cupped her cheek and tilted her head back up to look at him.
"Since when?" The look in his eyes told her not to bother lying to him as he moved his thumb beneath her eye to see if her pupils were constricted or not.
"Two… maybe three days."
(Y/n) didn't like the way he shook his head at her or how his upper lip curled. She didn't have to say anything more for him to understand. She hadn't wanted to tell him or the team because she wanted to do her job, she wanted to be useful. She wanted to do whatever she could for the team and not be thought of as a burden or some kind of ornament. (Y/n) was very limited in what she could do, whatever was left for her to work on she wanted to do it efficiently.
And being a member of Swat meant they pushed through meager headaches and light dizzy spells that came and went. It meant being better than the average person, doing ten times more work and in harder conditions.
(Y/n) could hardly complain that she felt under the weather when she was barely doing anything at all.
"Here." Joe knelt down at Rocker's side and opened the first aid kit for him and he took a moment to take in (Y/n)'s condition and see how bad she was. Now he felt bad for being snappy over the comms earlier. Something was very wrong with her. She wasn't well and none of them had noticed soon enough.
Rocker kept his left arm around (Y/n)'s front and let her lean her left shoulder and cheek against his chest. He didn't mind propping her up, it was better than having her keel over on the floor again.
He grabbed the thermometer from the box and gently pressed it into her ear, but when it beeped, he could barely find the ability to keep breathing properly.
"Thirty-nine point five, she's burning up." That wasn't good. She had a fever and she was barely lucid. This meant a hospital visit.
When a quiet murmur left (Y/n)'s lips, Rocker leaned his head to the left and glanced down at her with an arched brow. "What, sweetheart?"
His nose crinkled and he huffed, both shoulders deflating when (Y/n) suddenly lurched over his arm and threw up. Both her hands reached up to cling to his bicep that was strapped across the front of her chest and she felt his other hand rubbing up and down her back as she coughed and threw up what little dinner she had managed to eat earlier today.
"Okay, we're going to the emergency room now. Let's get you up, sweetheart." Rocker didn't have a choice. If they didn't get her fever under control and find out why she was sick she was only going to get worse and he couldn't take that risk. Not when he knew a fever and an underlining cause could easily cause complications with the baby.
He kept his left arm around her chest and his right arm swooped down her waist to hold her hip. He pushed up from his knees and carefully reeled (Y/n) up with him and he nodded at Joe who leaned forward and took her elbow to try and help get her onto shaking legs.
Each of them could see that (Y/n) didn't hold the strength to keep herself upright and her head flopped onto Rocker's shoulder as she leaned more and more into his chest until her knees were almost caving in.
"I don't think she's walking out of here." Hondo spared a worried glance towards the couple before he flagged down Deacon. They had to go and tell Hicks what had happened and since Adam had the rank of thirty-David, he would be next in command until Rocker got back. Whenever that may be.
Rocker absentmindedly nodded and mumbled a soft "Up we go," as he unravelled his left arm from (Y/n)'s chest and swooped it beneath her legs instead.
He wasn't going to get far unless Joe helped him drag (Y/n) out of here and that wouldn't be fair nor dignified. The only option he had was to carry her out to the car and take her to the hospital.
It proved to Rocker that his wife really was in a bad way because if she were more herself, she would of protested him picking her up and carrying her anywhere in front of the rest of Swat. But she didn't make one grumble or remark. All she did was smother her burning temple against his shoulder and loop her arms sluggishly around his neck.
He had a feeling she would pass out before he got her to hospital.
Rocker ignored the eyes burning into him, the frantic stares being cast their way and the fact that every member of Swat stopped what they were doing to watch him carry his wife out of here. He had to get her to the emergency room and make sure she and the baby were okay.
"You just stay awake with me, sweetheart." He muttered softly against her temple as he twisted to the side and used his shoulder to push open the door leading to the car park. "You're gonna be fine."

Deacon’s end-of-shift routine had changed drastically over the past year. Before, he would rush home to see Annie and hug his kids. Now, he sits on a bench in the locker room, looks at pictures of Matthew, Lila, and Samuel, and counts down the days until he can see them again. Anything he could do at work to delay going home to a cold and lonely apartment, he’d do it.
After Annie awoke from her surgery to remove the tumor in her brain, she was different. Deacon tried everything he could to remind Annie of why they fell in love and convince her that it could be the same as before. The Annie Deacon once knew was long gone, and the new Annie wasted no time filing for divorce and getting custody of the kids. So, Deacon spent the next year in a vicious cycle of loneliness, struggling to accept what has happened and wondering if he’ll ever feel alive again. But then, he left SWAT HQ on a random weekday, went to a park to walk, and met you. Then, suddenly, everything brightened again.
Less than a week later, you became part of Deacon’s life. He texted you often, made plans to hang out, and, by the end of the month, asked you on a date. Despite the heartbreak he’s been through and the misery he has allowed himself to stay in, Deacon fell for you quickly.
Tumblr media
“Are you free tonight?” Deacon asks over the phone.
“Mm, I’ll have to check my schedule,” you joke. “I think I can squeeze you in.”
“My team is going out to dinner tonight, and I want you to come.”
“Deacon,” you begin.
“I’m sure,” he answers before you ask. “You’re important to me, and they’re my family.”
“I’ll be there.”
“I’ll pick you up,” Deacon corrects you. “See you tonight.”
Several hours later, you hold Deacon’s hand as you enter the restaurant. His team is his family, and you know that meeting them is important. Your relationship is getting serious, and tonight solidifies that.
“Hondo, Street, Chris, Tan, Luca, this is my girlfriend,” Deacon begins once you’re seated.
Immediately, you’re greeted with handshakes, hugs, questions, and smiles. Talking to them is easy. It's like they’ve been your best friends for as long as they’ve been Deacon’s. Deep down, however, a small, nagging question wonders if they like you or if this is an act for Deacon’s benefit.
After you receive your drinks, you excuse yourself to use the restroom, and Chris joins you.
“Thank you,” Chris says, pulling you into a hug in the privacy of the women’s room.
“For what?” you question.
“Being so great for Deacon. Watching what he went through with Annie was… it was awful. But then you came along, and he’s happy again. We want the best for him, and that’s you.”
“You think so?”
Chris scoffs as she rolls her eyes. “If you could see how he looks at you, you wouldn’t have a single doubt. You’re good for each other, and he loves you.”
“Thank you, Chris.”
“More importantly than Deacon, you also got a new best friend.”
“Street?” you tease.
She shoves you gently before she loops her arm through yours. “No one likes Street, that’s one thing you need to know.”
“Deacon seems to,” you argue playfully.
“Deacon has a thing for strays.” Chris realizes what she implied and adds, “Not you!”
“I got it. We’re best friends now, right? So, don’t worry about offending me.”
“Oh, I knew I’d like you.”
Tumblr media
“Sorry,” Tan says as he pulls his shopping cart toward him.
“No worries,” the person behind the other cart says.
“Annie?” Tan questions, stepping forward to see her.
“Victor, hi,” she greets. “How are you?”
“Annie,” a man calls as he walks down the aisle. “Sorry.”
“It’s our second date and we both forgot that cooking requires ingredients,” Annie explains.
“Well, good for you,” Tan says. “Glad to see you and Deacon are both moving on. Have a nice night.”
Annie watches Tan walk past; though her date is talking to her, she can only focus on one thing. Deacon and another woman. Annie may not love him anymore but does not appreciate the visual. She doesn’t want to see Deacon with someone else, no matter what.
“Annie?” her date tries again. “Tomato basil or marinara?”
“You pick,” she mumbles. He nods and weighs the options while Annie considers what she could do to ensure that Deacon won’t move on. As far as she’s concerned, he has no reason to move on after her.
Tumblr media
Deacon is nearly ready for your date when someone knocks on his door. He is surprised to see Annie and his kids standing outside. When Lila reaches forward to knock, he pulls the door open and squats to hug her.
“Hey!” he greets as the boys join the hug. “What are you doing here?”
“Surprising you!” Lila answers happily.
“Something came up and I have to meet someone, not sure when I’ll be done,” Annie says. She looks at his nice outfit and adds, “But if you’ve got plans, I can-“
“No, no,” Deacon replies hurriedly. “I can watch them.”
“Great. Thanks, David.”
Annie disappears down the hall, smiling to herself for her success in keeping him from meeting his date. While she celebrates her perceived victory, Deacon takes his kids inside, abandons his suit jacket on a chair, and dials your number.
“Hey, Deac,” you greet when you answer.
“Hi,” he begins. “I’m so sorry, but Annie just dropped the kids off and needs me to watch them tonight.
“I understand, Deacon. Enjoy your time with them; we can reschedule.”
“Thank you.”
Lila reaches up toward Deacon’s phone, and he smiles as he lowers it and puts it on speaker. “Someone wants to say hi,” Deacon tells you.
“Hi!” Lila calls.
“Well, hello, Lila,” you reply happily. “I hope you have fun with your dad tonight.”
“Are you coming over?” she asks.
“You can if you want,” Deacon adds before you can answer.
“What does Lila want?” you inquire.
Lila smiles up at Deacon, and he answers for her, “She wants to see you.”
“What if I come over for dinner and then let you enjoy some family time after?” you suggest.
“That sounds perfect, we’ll see you then.”
Deacon ends the call and sits on the couch with his kids. Spending time with them and you is better than the expensive reservation you had, he thinks. Deacon may never know what Annie’s plan was, but her attempt at sabotage actually made Deacon’s night better. Besides, you’d already met his kids when they stayed with him for a weekend, and they enjoy your company almost as much as he does.
Tumblr media
“Here to see Deacon?” Street asks when he notices you waiting at SWAT HQ.
“I am,” you answer with a smile. “He’s in a meeting; Hondo told me I could wait here.”
“Don’t make me give you a parking ticket,” he teases.
Around the corner, Annie stops when she hears Deacon’s name. More, when she hears that another woman is here to see Deacon. She doesn’t know if it’s the same person Tan mentioned or the same one whose date she interrupted, but she doesn’t like it. After Street leaves, she walks into the common area and sees you sitting in a chair with your phone in your lap.
“May I?” Annie asks, pointing to the empty chair beside you.
“Yes, of course,” you answer, smiling.
“Thanks. So, are you a cop’s wife?”
“No, just a girlfriend.”
“Then you’re the brave one in the relationship,” Annie says.
“Not at all. I worry about him all the time.”
Annie hums before she muses, “Seems like that would put a lot of strain on a relationship.”
“Well, the alternative is a complete lack of care and empathy. To me, that’s not even an option.”
“Sure, but… doesn’t that constant worry put a barrier between you? Or maybe your relationship is new enough that you haven’t noticed yet. He will.”
You nod and unlock your phone. Annie may not know you recognize her, but she’s in a few pictures at Deacon’s apartment. The first time you came over, he explained everything to you: the tumor, the sudden change in her personality, and how she broke his heart by leaving and taking his kids most of the time. You knew she had been changed by the tumor, but you didn’t expect she’d try to scare you into leaving Deacon.
Hondo steps out of the office and looks between you and Annie. When you lock eyes with him, he tips his head to invite you in while he walks toward Annie. You mouth thank you and walk quickly into the office where Deacon is. You decide not to tell him what Annie said, but you suspect he knows more about her new attitude than you do.
Tumblr media
Annie slides a diamond ring onto her left hand and watches it glint in the light. She came to the jewelry store to get Lila a necklace for her birthday and was distracted by the row of shining engagement rings. When Deacon proposed, they were young, and he got a sentimentally rich ring that was cheap. At that point, she loved it, but now she wonders what it would have been like to have received a ‘real’ ring. She doesn’t miss Deacon, but she misses his devotion to her, how he’d never as much as look at another woman.
The bell over the door rings as it opens, and Annie returns the ring to the saleswoman and asks to see any kids’ jewelry they have.
“Annie?” Deacon asks.
Annie turns toward the door and smiles when she sees him. “David. Hi.”
“What are you doing here?” he asks, glancing at the engagement ring being returned to its display.
“Shopping for Lila’s birthday. I was thinking I’d get her a necklace; she’s been talking about getting one for weeks.”
Deacon nods, aware that Lila wants a necklace because she loves the one you wear daily.
“What about you? You’ve never been a jewelry guy,” Annie points out.
You don’t know what kind of guy I am anymore, Deacon thinks. “Just replacing the chain,” Deacon says, tugging on the necklace tucked under his shirt.
Annie nods and follows the saleswoman to a different display case as Deacon approaches a desk at the back of the store.
“I have a pickup for David Kay,” he tells the man at the desk.
The man types his name, nods, and excuses himself to retrieve the order. Deacon looks at the back wall but is aware of where Annie is (a job hazard and an annoyance in this situation).
“Here you are, Mr. Kay,” the man says as he passes a bag over the desk. “It has been sized and polished, as requested.”
“Perfect,” Deacon replies. “Thank you.”
“Who’s the lucky girl?” Annie asks.
“What girl?”
“You and I both know it’s not a necklace chain.”
“You and I don’t know anything anymore, Annie.” Deacon begins to step past her, then adds, “Lila would like the one with the silver branch and flowers.”
As he leaves the jewelry store with your engagement ring at his side, Deacon focuses on you rather than Annie’s odd reaction to thinking he is proposing. She’d been unjustly angry and jealous after her surgery, even accused Deacon of cheating on her with Chris, and that shift in her mindset hasn’t gone away.
You text Deacon as he gets in his car, and his questions about Annie disappear as he smiles at your name.
Tumblr media
Your phone rings while you are waiting for Deacon to arrive. The number isn’t one you recognize, but you answer anyway.
“Hello?” you greet.
“Hi, this is Annie Kay,” the woman on the other end says.
“Oh, um, hi,” you stutter. “How did you get my number?”
“That’s not important.”
“I think-“
“Listen, I’m just calling to warn you. I know that you think things are getting serious with David, Deacon, whatever you call him. But it won’t work out.”
“Annie,” you try to interrupt.
“It won’t work because he will never be as happy with you as he was with me.”
Deacon pulls in and parks, and you hang up on his ex-wife. The phone rings again, but you mute the ringer and walk out to greet Deacon.
“Are you okay?” he asks, cupping your face between his hands.
“Yeah,” you answer.
Deacon shakes his head, and you admit, “Annie just called me. She wanted to tell me that you’d never be as happy with me as you were with her.”
“I’m so sorry,” Deacon sighs. “I’ll talk to her.”
“She really changed, didn’t she?”
Deacon nods as his arms wrap around you. “She was wrong.”
“Oh, I know,” you agree playfully. “Deacon, I love you.”
“I love you,” he replies. “So much.”
Tumblr media
Matthew, Lila, and Samuel are home with Annie the next time you and Deacon go on a date. He takes you to an overview where you can see where you met and brings a special picnic dinner. Around 8 p.m., Lila asks her mom to stay up later. Since there’s no school tomorrow, Annie agrees, and the kids watch the clock rather than the television above it.
Above Los Angeles, your watch changes to 8:15, and Deacon takes your hand as he encourages you to stand. He presses a button on his phone, and when the music begins to play, he pulls you close and dances with you. At 8:19 exactly, the song ends, and Deacon drops to one knee.
“Second chances aren’t guaranteed,” Deacon begins. “But you are by far the best second chance I’ve ever gotten. I love you more than I thought I could love anything ever again. You’re good with my kids, you don’t care that I’m used and have been broken over and over, and you never fail to make me feel like I’m the only man you’ll ever want.” Deacon pulls a velvet box from the picnic basket and raises the ring toward you to ask, “Will you keep loving me forever, and marry me?”
“Yes!” you yell, taking Deacon’s hand. “Deacon, yes.”
You drop to your knees to hug Deacon, but he redirects you to kiss you, and he pulls you just as close as when you were dancing. You and your love melt into Deacon for eternity.
In Annie’s living room, when the clock changes to 8:20, Matthew, Samuel, and Lila jump and cheer. Annie doesn’t know that her attempts to sabotage Deacon’s relationship will never work. Deacon’s children know they’re gaining a stepmom which is cause for celebration. However, everyone is in for a surprise when they learn Deacon plans to petition for custody.
“Deacon,” you say after you pull back. “You’re not broken.”
“Not anymore,” he agrees. “Not since I found you.”
