David Mattingly, 'The Apocalypse', ''Questar'', Vol. 2, #3, June 1980 According to the magazine I lifted this illustration from, it was a rejected cover for a Rick James album. There's no real information as to which album but Mattingly states that he liked his work and decided to finish the piece for his own satisfaction. To me it could easily be some VHS box cover art for a post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie from the 80s. Source

from vogue.com:
Still, when it came to preparing the look that would serve as one of the night’s boldest outfits, there was little resistance from Petras’s end. “She just really wanted to make a statement, and I think we are making a statement for sure,” says Taymour of the outfit, which was loosely inspired by Collina Strada’s fall 2021 show. For that collection, Strada enlisted Animorphs book series creator David Burroughs Mattingly, as well as her regular collaborators Charlie Engman and Freeka Tet, to create kaleidoscopic prints and patterns. It offered the exact kind of sartorial joy that has made Collina Strada one of New York’s most thrilling and adventurous fashion prospects.
Kim Petras claims she’s representing “horse girls” at the 2021 Met Gala
