David Bailly groeide op in de academische wereld van het zeventiende-eeuwse Leiden. Zijn vader was kalligraaf en schermleraar aan de universiteit en had daarnaast een winkeltje met prenten en studiemateriaal. Als volwassene maakte Bailly veelvuldig gebruik van zijn universitaire netwerk. Hij werkte vooral als portretkunstenaar. Als zodanig vereeuwigde hij hoogleraren en studenten die vanuit heel Europa aan de Leidse universiteit kwamen studeren. Opmerkelijk is dat de kunstenaar portrettekeningen niet alleen vervaardigde als voorstudie voor een schilderij, maar ook als eindproduct. Dat was in de zeventiende eeuw niet gebruikelijk.

Eén van de door Bailly geschilderde studenten is de Poolse prins Janusz Radziwitt, stammend uit een zeer rijke familie. Dat is wel te zien aan zijn fraai geschilderde pak van zilverbrokaat, doorweven met gouddraad. Bailly schilderde de prins ten voeten uit, zoals gebruikelijk was voor vorsten. In een brief aan zijn vader meldde de prins dat hij het doek pas later kon opsturen omdat het heel groot was en nog acht dagen moest drogen.

Aanzienlijk soberder van stijl is het portret van de uit Brielle afkomstige student Cornelis Briel. Zijn zwarte kostuum mag dan minder overdadig ogen dan het pak van zilverbrokaat van de Poolse prins, het is zeker niet minder gedetailleerd weergegeven. David Bailly blinkt uit in het schilderen van stoffen. Zwart is bij hem nooit zomaar zwart. Het is duidelijk dat hij de luxe stoffen zorgvuldig en met veel oog voor detail heeft geobserveerd voor hij ze op het doek weergaf. Kijk bijvoorbeeld naar de stof van de mouwen op het portret van Everhard van Bronchorst.

Hoewel zijn specialisme vooral portretten betrof, had David Bailly van jongs af aan ook interesse in stillevens en met name vanitas stillevens. Dit genre was in Bailly’s tijd sowieso populair. Veel kunstenaars maakten dergelijke stillevens waarin de eindigheid van het menselijk leven centraal stond.

Aan het eind van zijn leven combineerde Bailly portretten en vanitasstilleven in het unieke Vanitasstilleven met portret van een jonge schilder. We zien typische vanitas-voorwerpen als een schedel, een pijp en een zandloper, maar ook meerdere portretten. Een jonge man houdt het portret van een oude man vast. Dat het hier een kunstenaar betreft, is te zien aan de schilderstok in zijn hand en het (nog schone) pallet aan de wand. Het portret dat hij vasthoudt stelt Bailly zelf voor. Hoewel er verschillende theorieën zijn over wie de jonge man is, lijdt het voor mij geen twijfel dat het eveneens de kunstenaar zelf is. De eindigheid van het leven van de jonge kunstenaar kan niet beter worden geïllustreerd dan door hem als oude man weer te geven. Het portret van de vrouw stelt vermoedelijk zijn echtgenote, Agneta van Swanenburg, voor. Zij komt nog een keer voor op het schilderij, maar nu als een schim. Er is gesuggereerd dat het portret in kleur is geschilderd, maar daarna met grijs is overschilderd om het onzichtbaar te maken. Later zou het per ongeluk weer tevoorschijn zijn gekomen. Mij lijkt deze hypothese buitengewoon onwaarschijnlijk. Het hele gezicht is duidelijk zichtbaar, wat er volgens mij op duidt dat het bedoeld was om als schim zichtbaar te zijn.

Het vanitasstilleven met de jonge kunstenaar hangt in een zaal met allemaal vanitasschilderijen van tijdgenoten van David Bailly. Geen van deze werken is echter zo intrigerend als dit schilderij, dat door het museum wordt beschreven als ‘Bailly’s meesterwerk’. Nu is ‘meesterwerk’ een mijns inziens nogal gemakkelijk geplakt etiket, maar in dit geval kan ik het gebruik ervan alleszins billijken. Ik ken geen enkel werk uit de zeventiende eeuw dat in de verste verte lijkt op dit enigmatische schilderij.

On August 9th 1935 Prestwick Airport in Ayrshire opened after David McIntyre set up Scottish Aviation Ltd.

.After the outbreak of war in 1939, Prestwick Aerodrome was designated RAF Prestwick with David McIntyre as Station Commander. Prestwick Airport Passenger Terminal became a haven for transatlantic crews during the war. By 1945 it had become arguably the best equipped and most active airport terminal in Europe.

On March 3rd 1960 a United States army transport plane returning to the USA from Germany, stopped to refuel at Prestwick, one of the passengers was sergeant Elvis Aaron Presley, the only time he set foot on the British Isles.

The pictures show the old control tower at the Airport, originally known as Monkton House, it was built by a Samuel Neilson, a mason for a Hugh Baillie around 1740, who, due to financial problems rapidly sold it to a James Macrae of Blackheath he renamed the house Orangfield after William of Orange and carried out alterations in the late 18th century. The flanking wings and entrance steps were added in 1906 and in 1933 the house was converted to an hotel following the building of Prestwick Airport. Used by the RAF and USAAF during World War II, a control tower was built through the roof in 1943. The building was demolished in February 1966 when Prestwick Airport was expanded.

Among the pics are The Tartan Army heading for Mexoco in 1986, Trigger, Elvis and Concorde at Prestwick through the years. The construction pic is from 1992 when the train station was built, Prestwick was and still is the only Scottish airport directly connected to the railway.
