Rower Bhokanal goes on sanitisation drive at native village - Times of India
MUMBAI: Some athletes are donating money, some others are helping in providing essentials to the needy, but Asian Games gold-winning rower Dattu Baban Bhokanal took a more hands on approach while helping people amid the COVID-19 pandemic by sanitising his village in Nashik.
The 29-year-old used a fertiliser sprayer to carry out the sanitisation drive in his village Talegaon Ruhi, which is part of Chandvad tehsil on Sunday last. He said it took around four hours to complete the task.
“Me, my family and some friends decided to sanitise the village, which has a population of about 12,000,” Bhokanal told PTI from over phone. Nashik is not as aggressively affected by the fast-spreading COVID-19 pandemic, which has ravaged Maharashtra.
Bhokanal’s village is, however, completely unaffected by the deadly outbreak so far.
Bhokanal was on leave to visit the village when the nationwide lockdown, now extended till May 3, forced him to stay longer than he was supposed to.
Making use of the time at hand, he carried out the sanitisation drive with his brother, uncle and a friend to help him out.
“Sanitisation of any area is important to keep the virus at bay. For example, when a person visits a doctor’s clinic, he might touch the pole or the walls inside that clinic. Therefore we thought sanitisation of the clinic was essential along with several other places,” he explained.
The acclaimed rower, who is a silver-medallist from the Asian Championships, said a spraying machine lying at his home for agricultural usage, came in handy.
“We sanitised the places people frequent like the government clinic, veterinary clinic, gram panchayat office, its gates,” informed the rower.
Bhokanal said he and his family also sanitised medical shops, temples and the local vegetable market.
He said he would continue to carry out this drive twice a week.
With the entire sporting calendar shredded due to the pandemic, rowing has also been affected.
Bhokanal said working out at home has helped him in shape and be ready for when the action resumes.

I feel broken, says miffed Sakshi Malik after Arjuna snub | More sports News
NEW DELHI: Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik on Friday came down heavily on the Sports Ministry for leaving her name out of the final list of Arjuna awardees. The ministry decided against bestowing the Arjuna on Sakshi and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu as the two have already been conferred with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.
Speaking to IANS, Sakshi said she is disappointed with the government for ignoring her achievements. “I always wanted to be called as Arjuna awardee Sakshi Malik. The athletes do everything to win such accolades. He or she wants to win all the awards. That’s what motivates us. “I don’t know what I should do to win the Arjuna award. I am happy to be conferred with the Khel Ratna award in 2016. And I respect it too. But I always wanted Arjuna. That was my dream,” a fuming Sakshi said. Last week, the Justice (retd) Mukundakam Sharma-led selection committee had recommended 29 names for the Arjuna award to the Sports Ministry. The list also included Sakshi and 2017 weightlifting world champion Mirabai, but the decision of bestowing the Arjuna on them was left to the discretion of Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju. This was due to the fact that they had already won the Khel Ratna, the country’s highest sporting honour. Athletes who will receive Arjuna award this year are: Atanu Das (archery), Dutee Chand (athletics), Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Chandrasekhar Shetty (badminton), Vishesh Bhriguvanshi (basketball), Subedar Manish Kaushik, Lovlina Borgohain (boxing), Ishant Sharma, Deepti Sharma (cricket), Sawant Ajay Anant (equestrian), Sandesh Jhingan (football), Aditi Ashok (golf), Akashdeep Singh, Deepika (hockey), Deepak (kabaddi), Kale Sarika Sudhakar (Kho Kho), Dattu Baban Bhokanal (rowing), Manu Bhaker, Saurabh Chaudhary (shooting), Madhurika Suhas Patkar (table tennis), Divij Sharan (tennis), Shiva Keshavan (winter sports), Divya Kakran, Rahul Aware (wrestling), Suyash Narayan Jadhav (para swimming), Sandeep (para athletics) and Manish Narwal (para shooting).

Army men bag rowing gold for India

Army men bag rowing gold for India
Indian rowing men’s quadruple sculls team members celebrate after winning the gold medal in Palembang.
Jakarta: The Army came to India’s aid in rowing by creating enough splash to claim three medals, including a historic gold in quadruple sculls at the 18th Asian Games on the final day of the competition at Jakabaring Sports City.
An all-Army Indian team gave it their all once they waded themselves into the reckoning for four medals.
“We soldiers never give up and we have weathered yesterday’s storm of a poor show,” said quadruple sculls winner Sawarn Singh, whose other team members included Dattu Baban Bhokanal, Sukhmeet Singh and Om Prakash. “I told my teammates that we will go for the gold and we will give it our all. It was like ‘karo ya maro’ (do or die).”
The team crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 6:17.13. Indonesia bagged the silver while Thailand settled for the bronze.
Dushyant Chauhan, bronze medallist in lightweight single sculls at Incheon four years ago, went on to take third again on Friday. Bhagwan Singh and Rohit Kumar added another bronze in the men’s lightweight double sculls.
“I pushed as if it was the last race of my life. That was the only thing on my mind. Maybe I pushed a bit too hard but it was worth it,” said Chauhan, also going on to reveal that he was not in the best of shape as he was suffering a cold. “I just had bread and an apple. It was very hot also. That is why I was completely dehydrated,” added the 25-year-old who lives in Gurgaon.
Gold in tennis too
Top seeds Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan were at their authoritative best in the men’s tennis doubles as they defeated Aleksander Bublik and Denis Yevseyev of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-4 in 52 minutes to claim gold.
In the men’s singles, Prajnesh Gunneswaran, settled for a bronze after going down to 6-2, 6-2 to Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in the semi-finals.
In shooting, Heena Sidhu won her maiden Asian Games individual medal with a bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol and swelled India’s medals haul in shooting to nine.
India are also certain of three medals in squash with Saurav Ghosal, Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal Karthik making it to the semi-finals of their singles events. Top-seeded Ghosal defeated compatriot Harinder Pal Sandhu 9-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 in quarter-finals. Pallikal crushed Japanese Kobayashi Misaki in straight games 11-5, 11-6, 11-8.
Iranians shock
The Iranian women’s team took cue from their male counterparts to shock India’s women kabaddi team for gold. The two-time defending champions were shocked 24-27 in a thriller. India led 13-11 at the end of first half.
Defending champions India continued their surge in men’s hockey by beating Japan 8-0. It was another big win for India after 17-0 win over Indonesia and 26-0 win against Hong Kong.
Pakistan won their Pool ‘B’ match 16-0 over Kazakhstan.
