We walked over to the beach, laid down on our backs, and looked up... this is what we saw... something that makes you feel incredibly small and insignificant, but also breathtaking to see. We're in for an Out-of-this-World treat over the next few days. On the last solstice of 2020 (Dec. 21), Jupiter and Saturn will appear the closest together in the night sky in 4 centuries.   The Geminids meteor shower — a.k.a. the brightest annual meteor shower — peaks late tonight + early tomorrow (Monday) morning with up to 150 Meteors Per Hour from the east-northeast. PRO TIP: Bundle up and allow 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. And, the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn (which some Bible Beaters are calling the "Christmas Star") is now visible on the southwest horizon just after sunset and will be brightest on the winter solstice next Monday. The two planets will seem to switch positions in the sky as Jupiter overtakes Saturn in its orbit. Rappahannock County Park in Virginia, recognized in February of 2019 by the International Dark-Sky Association as a Dark Sky Park with a Silver Tier rating, hosted a Dark Skies night on Saturday that featured a presentation by James Granahan and telescopes on the field.  Some of the brighter objects that can be viewed from the park in October include M2, M15, M29, and the Double Cluster; Jupiter will reach its opposition on Monday, the giant planet's closest orbital approach and brightest appearance in our night sky.
