Ok so there’s 2 main thoughts I can’t get out of my head, how Austen uses society and the individual, and how Darcy’s character is misinterpreted by the general public today (I blame 2005 for this)
I read up on the interpretation of society during Austen’s time and I was actually really surprised by how different it is from today. So today we (for the most part) view society as one large, rigid, obstructive structure, constantly at odds with the individual. Contrastingly, the individual is seen as free will, independence, expression of self etc. Austen, however, viewed society as a place to socialize, interact with others, it’s very much focused on the individuals and how they make up society. We see this through the narration about Netherfield, how everyone seems to share the same opinion and gossip spreads like wildfire. Society is a homogenous group of people banded together against the intruders (Darcy). Through Austen’s framework, Darcy in Netherfield is then the individual, rigid, at odds with the group, protective only of his self and close friends. BUT you could easily switch that around. It would be easy to see Darcy as upholding society’s rigid social structures, while Lizzie challenges them (as the individual). There’s more to be said here but ultimately I think the fact that they can take on either role of society or the individual plays into the larger themes of pride and prejudice, relating to how they both possess pride and prejudice, and readers often struggle with assigning one as prideful and the other as prejudiced because it simply can’t be done. There’s no separating pride from prejudice, and there’s no separating the role of society from the role of the individual.
Which leads me to my next point: Darcy is a complete ass at the beginning of the novel, and he doesn’t get bullied enough for it. Too many people latch onto the idea of him as an uwu shy boi. I love this man but he’s literally backhand slapped Sir William for no reason when he said “every savage can dance”. 2005 is definitely my favourite adaptation but this was the biggest mistake to come out of that movie. I know they were trying to make Darcy a bit more sympathetic, but I really think they should’ve kept some more of his asshole actions, otherwise we end up with a story where most of the fault is Lizzie’s, and that negates basically all the themes of the novel.

hi lovely, 🌼, 👻 & 💕 for the ask game 💗
Hi my love, thanks for asking 🥰
Fave flower? I don't know, I am really bad at choosing favorites 🤭 But I love Sakura, Honeysuckle(i dont know if it is a flower tho) and Peonies.
But all flowers are beautiful. 🌸🌸🌺🥀🌹🌻🌼
I don't believe in ghosts👻 I think they are made of fiction. Do you believe in ghosts?
My two top fave fictional characters?? This is hard to answer, I have a lot but I don't have a lot. I mean I fall in love with most characters I read or watch, sorry 🤭🤭
But from book characters, Mr. Darcy? Coz, he is like so dreamily my type. Like how he changes for his love and how he helped Lizzy's family without expecting anything back. And I love how socially awkward he is. And how he confessed his love with swallowing his pride. UwU.
Another favorite would be the couple from If Only It Were True, Marc Levy's novel. This novel and it's sequal See You Again are my top favorite novels. So I really love the characters Arthur and Lauren and their story.

@siennadraws irt the 9 characters that inspired or remind you of your OC meme that i did yesterday.
okay here we go!
1. princess leia: leia is super important to me—probably one of my favorite characters of all time ever (alongside beatrice who also made this list lmao). she’s cold when she wants to be and warm other times, she’s a mix of charming and sarcastic and witty and both politically adept and capable in combat. she was raised in politics and excels as a diplomat, a princess, a senator, a rebel, and a general. she can do it all. and i like to think ellinor is so much like her—politically savvy but able to hold her own in combat. fiery, wearing her heart on her sleeve. everything she does is out of love and passion for what she believes in. and ALSO SHE HAS A TWIN BROTHER WITH SUPERNATURAL POWERS AND SO DOES ELLINOR UWU.
2. lin: lin doesn’t have a ton in common with ellinor tbh but it’s the ~vibes~. it’s the way she’s cold and harsh when she’s first encountered but quickly changes her tune when in private and with someone she trusts. (also lin is the nickname cullen gives ellinor, partly from my love for lin.)
3. elizabeth bennet: lizzie inspired ellinor with her enemies-to-lovers romance with mr. darcy tbh. like lizzie and darcy, ellinor and cullen are both proud and make sweeping assumptions of each other at first based on their limited knowledge of each other’s station and past. once they learn more of each other and their motivations, they soften and allow themselves to lower their guards and lose their prejudices.
4. beatrice: this is my other favorite character of all time along with leia! beatrice and benedick have like the original enemies to lovers romance in exactly the way i like it—rivalry and misunderstanding as opposed to like, morally opposed forces who hate each other. they’re in the same social circle so it’s impossible for them to avoid each other much. beatrice is sharp-tongues and witty and completely unable to admit she’s actually wildly attracted to benedick, who is a decorated war himbo hero. when they finally confess their love, they’re able to join forces to protect hero, beatrice’s beloved cousin. it’s very similar to how cullen finds avery to prove his love to ellinor.
5. i elaborated on beatrix kiddo here.
6. jyn: jyn’s actually really unlike ellinor in a lot of ways—unwilling to take a side, not especially passionate about a cause until she’s forced to be because it’s easier to keep her head down, whereas ellinor is passionate and outspoken in favor of mages and against templars. but they’re similar in the way jyn is so solitary at first, unable to trust anyone and doing her best to persevere on her own. ellinor is the same way when she first arrives in ferelden. their found families both sort of fall to them, less out of choice than out of need, but they come to love them anyway. and jyn’s attachment to and love for her father is very reminiscent of ellinor’s to avery.
7. alice fletcher: i mostly couldn’t allow myself to post this meme without one character from a western. alice is tsundere af, just like ellinor. she was raised as a lady of society but grows to adapt to harsher situations and be hardened out of necessity, much like ellinor.
8. megara: god i love meg haha. she has a love for warrior himbos just like ellinor, even if she’s afraid to admit her love. because she has a rough history with men who’ve hurt her!! JUST LIKE ELLINOR!!
9. sansa: sansa reminds me a lot of younger, pre-inquisition ellinor. when sansa is very young, like the first two books, she’s naive and tries way too hard to play into politics and be what other people want her to be. it’s only when she gets burned too many times and grows up that she becomes who she really is and grows to be really confident and determined. and that’s like ellinor to me.

when the only media i consumed of p&p was movies and plays, i assumed he had poor manners + social anxiety due to the lack of inner dialogue from lizzie. (also i was Young and Dumb.) but i’m finally reading the text now, and i’m confused how his behavior can be misconstrued as “he’s awkward uwu”. the title is literally “pride and prejudice”, the whole point is we get to witness him stepping down from his high horse.
roight like........ I understand how things like “awkward turtle” "precious idiot” “my dumpster fire son” &c. may just fall along the lines of “weird things people in fandom say” but when people really do earnestly believe that he’s shy or “socially awkward” (e.g. “socially awkward Darcy” memes from LBD) or even “socially anxious” it........... troubles me not only because it’s a bad reading that defangs the point of the book & I’m a snob but also because I think it falls very neatly into a pattern of assuming that poor behaviour from men comes from a place of ignorance rather than malice, entitlement, or any other character flaw (i.e. the trope of the “blunderer”)
I’ve seen literal scholarship that tries to claim Darcy is socially awkward (& interpret the book in other ways that makes it sound like a generic misogynistic romcom, e.g. Elizabeth apparently was in love w Darcy all along and was just hiding it from herself 😂😂😂 because no woman can ever actually just dislike a man because of his behaviour)--even straight-up saying that the author is ignoring the point of view of ‘the book’ itself to do so--as if it’s groundbreaking stuff & I just. I have to laugh

Okay but this scene. This scene.
This scene absolutely solidifies Mr Darcy's redemption as a character. He loves Lizzie, so he does these things for her to be happy, but he doesn't expect her to accept his hand. He is prepared to respect her wishes and love her from afar. This is the highest declaration of respectful love any person could ever give.
And Lizzie, she kisses his hand (UWU) and replies with "Your hands are cold". I know there's the intepretation that the phrase "cold hands warm heart" which describes someone who does not appear to be sentimental but secretly does acts of kindness - basically implying that Mr Darcy has a warm heart - a beautiful, beautiful intepretation. Personally though, I think it can also signify the subtle care she shows in regard to his cold hands is a way of her accepting his affection by reciprocating with hers - something she has yet to give so freely to him.
In the books, the part starting from "If, however, your feelings have changed..." was never even said. It was an implicit marriage proposal done by the reaffirmation of his love from before, and there weren't many words spared for how Elizabeth accepted the proposal, but more on the subsequent course of conversation which explored their feelings from the beginning of the story up till that point.
In both cases the proposal was done so quietly and the answering agreement was also done in uniquely silent yet heartfelt manners and I just- the movie definitely ramped up the feels with the additional bewitched me body and soul (a prize line) but I love how casually the book handled the second proposal and I- ahhhhhhhhh I love them both so much?????
I love reading in between lines ok. :')))
(I didn't expect this to get this long but um- excuse me as I revamp my pride and prejudice rants I'm sorry the feels are coming back to me help-)
"If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes have not changed, but one word from you will silence me forever. If, however, your feelings have changed, I will have to tell you: you have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love--I love--I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on."
