Roy Hargrove | Earfood
Roy Hargrove is a pretty big deal in modern jazz, having done a lot in both the more traditional line and in the funk/fusion space as well, and performing with lots of big names and contributing to lots of important albums.  It’s a terrible shame that he was only 49 when he died in November.  This was the first album of his I’ve actually gotten to check out, and I think it’s really wonderful.  This is, for the most part, a pretty straightforward hard bop album that occasionally pushes a little into the soul jazz territory without ever getting to the neo-soul, funk, or fusion that Hargrove definitely worked with on some of his other albums.  About half of this album is Hargrove originals and the other half is covers, including a few standards, a Cedar Walton tune, a Sam Cooke tune, and one by Lou Marini, who I mostly know as being a member of the Blues Brothers band.  Hargrove is accompanied by a band that, I’m surprised to say, I mostly am not familiar with, except for pianist Gerald Clayton.  Justin Robinson plays sax, Danton Boller on bass, and Montez Coleman on the drums.  I really like this whole album, but some favorite tunes are the legendary Strasbourg/St. Denis, Mr. Clean, Starmaker, and To Wisdom The Prize, but the whole album is great.  I can see why Hargrove in general and this album in particular are such milestones of modern jazz music. RIP.

Roy Hargrove, you will be terribly missed
Tumblr media
Roy Hargrove, the incisive jazz trumpeter who emerged as a talent in his teens and became a symbol of his jazz generation in the early 1990s, died on Friday night, Nov. 2, in New York City. He was 49.
At 17 he was discovered by Wynton Marsalis who was so impressed that he invited Hargrove at a nearby club date. That led to a trip to Europe, the Berklee College of Music in Boston, New York City, the New School, the Bradley’s and the Greenwich Village.
The rest is now history.
