The King and the Assassin
Damian blearily blinked at the stone that tilted and shifted beneath his body, spattered with his blood and leaking out towards the edges of the summoning circle. He had been hit in the head. It throbbed. He was dizzy, even laying on his side on the floor and not moving. His limbs had been bound and he couldnât raise his hands to hold his head until it stopped spinning. Or, and probably more practically, staunch the bleeding in his stomach. His grandfather chanted some language Damian didnât know, which was impressive. Damian knew many languages.
Raâs volume grew and the circle burst into a wall of green flames and glinted eerily on Damianâs blood in the cave's dim lighting.Â
Damianâs heart should be faster. He was frightened. Frightened what his grandfather would do with whatever came through the summoning circle, frightened of death, though heâd never admit it, and he was bleeding out. Heâd lost so much blood. It was probably better that his heart wasnât beating faster.Â
He was going to die. Would his father refrain from killing Damianâs killer, like heâd refused to kill Toddâs? Damian had known it was a sore spot between the two, and it was quite enraging from this new perspective. Depressing.Â
Maybe one of Damianâs siblings would avenge him. Perhaps Grayson.
The flames surged higher and the temperature plummeted. Damian shivered, though that could be the blood loss. His grandfather stopped chanting as deafening cracks like two glaciers ramming into each other boomed and echoed across the cave. Static was slipped into the cacophony between the screeching crashing and just as suddenly as it started, it stopped.
The noise was gone, the flames sputtered out, and Raâs stared in awe at something Damian couldnât see. Stone pressed into the side of his face and the world was lilted sideways. But he could feel it. The presence of overwhelming power radiating somewhere above him that covered him in goosebumps and took his breath away. The strength was formidable. It was suffocating.
âReally? Another one?â The beingâs displeased grumble resonated in the air and layered as if many spoke at once. Damian breathed deeply.
He was going to die soon. There was no point in being scared of whatever this thing was.Â
âYour Majesty,â Raâs started. âI am Raâs Al Ghââ
âI donât care.â
His grandfatherâs face twitched and his jaw clamped shut with irritation written along the tension in his muscles.Â
If Damian were in a better state he might have snorted. No, perhaps he would have just stared as he was doing now. No one interrupted Raâs, Demon Head of the League of Assassins, and if they did, they wouldnât live much longer. But his grandfather remained silent in the face of this being.
That did not bode well.
âWho is this?â
Damianâs heart stuttered as feet armoured in sharp, glassy ice, came into his vision. They landed delicately in front of him as if gravity was an option.
Okay, now he was scared again. If Grandfather was wary of this being, Damian didnât want itâs attention.
Damian was a vigilante, he was an ex-assassin, heâd faced many terrible things, he didnât get scared. This was ridiculous.
âMy grandson. Damian Al Ghul.â
The being crouched down and Damian was met with glowing, green eyes that swept him up and down.
Damian didn't like this at all. Heâd feel much better facing this creatureâs evaluating gaze, standing, unbound, and uninjured. This sensation was quite unsettling. Damianâs eyes grew hazier by the second and he tried his best to study the being in turn.
It had snow-white hair and pointed ears. Itâs tanned face was dashed with freckles and wore black ice for chest armour. White ice, similar to it's boots, protected it's hands. It looked young. No older than Damian himself. Perhaps a year or two younger.
The being hummed and it buzzed not unpleasantly in Damianâs ears.Â
âYour Majesty, I have summonââ
âShut up.â It said absent-mindedly, never straying itâs gaze from Damian. Raâs begrudgingly did as he was told. Damian caught glimpses of his seething disposition behind the being blocking most of Damianâs view.
Then, the being smiled at him. Rows of sharp teeth were visible behind abnormally long canines and Damian withheld a shudder. He didnât show fear. The beingâs smile was disturbingly sharp, unnaturally wide, Damianâs heartbeat ticked up, but he didnât show fear.Â
âMy, my, youâre a pretty one, arenât you?â It said and Damian blinked. He didnât. . .he didnât know how to process that. The beingâs hand reached out to brush his hair out of his face, frigid digits brushing lightly against Damianâs skin. âTell you what.â The being said, his smile a little less wide, but no less haunting and filled with anticipatory intent that Damian didnât find reassuring at all. âIâll heal you.â The beingâs head tilted. âAnd in exchange, you give me your hand in marriage.â
Damian short-circuited. His heart paused. His mouth parted. He may have stopped breathing for a moment.
He blinked several times.Â
Surely he misheard that.
â. . .What?â He croaked. It took a concerning amount of energy to speak that one word.
âTimes a-ticking.â It sang lowly, a knowing smile on itâs face. âYou donât have much longer. It doesnât matter to me if youâre a ghost or living, but. . .â The being leaned slightly towards where his head tipped to get a better look at Damianâs soon-to-be death wound. âI assume youâd prefer the latter?â
Damian stared up at the being, dumbfounded. Knots of indecipherable emotions sat heavy in his chest as he nodded, mutely. He didnât know what else to do. His family had no idea where he was or what had happened to him. By the time they figured it out, Damian would be dead. He could feel a darkness creeping into his head and tiring at his eyes. His body felt heavier the longer he laid here and the call to sleep grew stronger and stronger.
He would never wake up.
Or maybe he would become a ghost. Thatâs what the being said. Was it a ghost? His grandfather had said something about a ghost king, now that he thought about it. Damian had been a little too concussed to pay attention properly.
âWonderful.â The being drawled with a widening smile that made Damian doubt that this was really a good idea.
From nothing, a rolled up piece of green, slightly glowing paper, manifested in the beingâs hand. The ghost let it fall open with a flourish. The being read it aloud.
âDamian Al Ghul Wayne,âÂ
How did this ghost know he was a Wayne?
âIn exchange for being fully healed, agrees to wed me, High King Phantom,â He flashed him another toothy smile âAnd reside in the Infinite Realms in the Royal Keep. Sound good to you?â ItâPhantomâsaid.
Not really, but what else was Damian supposed to do? He had a thought. âFamily.â He managed to say with some effort. âVisits.â
The ghost hummed and nodded amicably much to Damianâs relief. If he can see his family and tell them what happened, maybe they can help get him out of this.
Phantom waved his hand and new words appeared on the contract. He cleared his throat. Damian was starting to think heâd die before they got through all this.
âDamian Al Ghul Wayne, In exchange for being fully healed, agrees to wed High King Phantom and reside in the Royal Keep, with the exception of familial visits to the mortal realm.â
Damian kept his surprise from his face. Heâd expected his family would be brought to the Infinite Realms, not the other way around.Â
âHow âbout that?â Phantom smiled down at him.
Damian nodded. Or tried to.
Phantomâs smile got wider. That bad feeling swirled again in Damianâs stomach.Â
A feathery pen appeared in Phantomâs free hand and he scrawled his name in flowy letters along the bottom without hesitation. The pen disappeared into thin air. Phantom reached over Damian to slice through his chains easily with a claw.
Damianâs vision was blurring and his movements were sluggish as he pulled his freed hands in front of him. Phantom held out the same pen to him before Damian could even look at his raw wrists, and his shaking hands could hardly grasp it.
âHere. Let me.â Phantom placed the pen between the dying oneâs fingers and held his freezing hand over Damianâs. He guided it toward the contract that floated near Damianâs head and touched the pen to paper.
Damian breathed uneasily as green, glowing ink followed the path of the pen, drawing out his name in increasingly alarming reality.
What was Damian doing? This was insane. Was this actually happening?
His heart beat faster, his blood flowed quicker, as the last letter was finished off with a flourish.
The contract glowed brighter and brighter until it disappeared ,conclusively, along with the pen.
Phantom turned to him and held a hand out. The effect was immediate. Damianâs blood ran backwards, dredging back from where it had leaked all over the floor to return to the veins it had been pumped out of. The black threatening to take over Damianâs consciousness slowly dissipated, and his wrists and ankles were healed of the chafing from the shackles. Breathing became easier. His vision grew clearer. His pain was gone. All of it.
Phantomâs hand dropped and Damian pushed himself to sitting, wondrously clenching and unclenching his perfectly functioning hands.
âBetter?â Phantom said, standing up. He held a hand out to Damian. The latter eyed it cautiously before flicking his gaze up to the ghostâs face.Â
âYes. . .thank you. . .â
âDonât mention it.â The being hauled Damian to his feet with a casual strength that seemed to surpass his lean muscle. As if Damian weighed nothing at all. The ghost king was a bit shorter than Damianâs six feet and floated to his eye level. He smiled once again. Was it automatic, or did he realize how off-setting it could be and used it? âIt wasnât a favour, after all.â
Damianâs jaw clenched and he hummed, disgruntledly.
âAwww.â The being laughed disappointedly. âThat bad, is it?â He raised a hand to Damianâs face and he jerked back, catching the wrist before he could think better of it, and immediately cursing himself for acting so recklessly. Phantomâs hand went intangible and Damianâs eyes widened imperceptibly as it was pulled through his grasp. âAlright, alright.â Phantom placated, holding up his hands.
âTt.â Damian clicked his tongue, hiding his relief and how erratically his heart fluttered in his chest.
âYour Majesty, might I have your attention?â Raâs voice was strained with displeasure and he stood stiffly, restrained retaliation to the blatant slights on his person.
âOh. Right. The fruitloop. Forgot about you.â The smile fell from Phantomâs face as if it had never been there. His tone dropped all previous easinessâbecause that is what it had been, seeing the undeniable changeâand regarded the Demon Head rather coldly. âThe one who decided sacrificing his own grandchild was a good idea.â
Damian glanced to the high king, something easing just a little that the king seemed to have some sort of moral compass.Â
His grandfather paused, realizing he had made a terrible mistake and calculating a way out of this. âHe was the only one wortââ
âI donât really care for your excuses.â Phantom spat, his voice gaining more layers and glitching with harsh static that wasnât there before. The room grew colder and frost leached across the ground from where Phantom floated. It didnât touch Damian. âI have heard about you, a man pretending at being immortal and killing whoever you pleased. I can smell it on you.â Phantom snarled lowly as he neared the man, making his grandfather pale; a feat Damian has never seen accomplished. âEctoplasmâthe realmâs ectoplasm. Youâve tainted it.â
âI perfected it.â Raâs said quietly. Stupidly.
Phantom hovered over Damianâs grandfather, a wicked, small smile curving up one side of his face.
âAnd now theyâre gone. Have fun picking out a casket.â Phantom chuckled darkly.
Raâs had gone deathly still, not daring to attack a being so powerful that could apparently wipe out the Lazarus Pits without even being present to do it.Â
The vehemence was utterly gone when Phantom turned and floated over to Damian. âReady to go?â He held out a hand.
Damianâs muddled, dumbfounded attention was on Phantomâs opposite hand casually trailing downwards and ripping open a green, swirling portal. The colour was similar to the pits. But. . .purer. Like Phantomâs eyes.
Damian looked into them and the king seemed to take that as answer enough. He gave a toothy grin and pulled Damian through.

Heheheh get ready for part 5 suckers~ this one has a special surprise at the end!
.
.
All the Fenton's sat at a large table, or the very least all the ones related by blood or marriage. The rest of the mafia stood around them, mostly glaring at the two brats that made them go on a whole chase after them.
At the head of the table was Boss Vinnie, he was served first. To his right was Cassandra, her wife Lily, a burly man who looked more in place at a sailor bar then at a fancy table, and lastly an older woman with a hooked nose and black hair with grey stripes tied back in a bun.
To his left was Jordan next to Ellie, Danny, and Jazz, with Maddie and Vlad near by, at the other foot of the table was Jack sitting right in the line of sight of the big bad boss.
As everyone ate the only two making any noise or whispered conversation was Danny and Ellie, the latter still holding onto the cat she claimed as her's now. Feeling bored Jordan joined in.
"What are you two chatting about? Because if it's another plan to mess with people I want in~" he grinned evily, when Jordan heard how these two kiddos had caused the majority of the mafia to lose their heads by just playing it was the most entertaining thing he heard in months, and he wanted in on the chaos.
"No, but if we do have a plan you can be our side kick when we set it up" Ellie spoke matter of factly, which made Jordan bark out a laugh, he was already loving this bratty kid. "Then what are you two talking about?" He pressed.
"Well Danny got to mostly keep Cujo so I should be able to keep Alfie" she gestures to the cat in her arms.
"Nu-uh, I had to keep Cujo a secert while I trained him to not destroy everything in sight" Danny protested.
"Wait wait wait, who's Cujo?"
"Danny's dog, well kind of, He picked him off the streets, even though he claimed to be training him the dog still caused so much damage that now Danny's ex keeps trying to shoot him." Ellie said this like a little kid who didn't know when the shut up, but she knew what she was doing as she hid a smirk as she ate.
"Okay Firstly Cujo was still a puppy, secondly my ex still misses me, though her aim is getting better." Danny huffed before stuffing his mouth. Jordan had to try so hard not to roll on the floor laughing, his cousins son already has a dog he's not supposed to have and a killer ex? What a riot.
"Please, if that's the best you got kid your weak." This came from the burly man who sat across from Danny. "When i was your age I already had a name for myself and a string of ex's, I'm known as the Heartbreaker for one then one reason you know." The guy huffed back.
Ellie, sweet sweet Ellie, wasn't going to take that statement laying down, he just called her brother weak! "Oh yeah? Danny by the age of 14 was our town's number one meance and was called no good by two different mayor's! As for ex's he's got three, but he keeps being an on and off with two of them." She growled while almost standing in her seat.
Jordan was just giggling to himself as this drama unfolded. Danny quickly butts in again.
"Wait hey, I don't have three ex's, I only dated Valerie, who are you claiming are the others?!"
"Johnny and Kitty, you know the biker guy and chick you keep racing. Rumor is you guys keep breaking up then going back together, Ember said so." She grinned as she egged Danny on as he blushed from embrassment.
"I only dated kitty three weeks tops, she was just doing it to get back at Johnny, their the ones who keep breaking up then getting back together, Johnny only did it to get back at kitty once and that was two days tops." Danny protested.
"Ahem, Danny, Ellie, reamber your manners now" Jazz warned in a serious tone only a mother or older sibling could make, quickly both kids settled down and ate.
Jordan leaned into Boss Vinnie's ear to whisper something about calling dibs on first watch.
Afterwards things mostly settled down, dinner was finshed, some chatting was done between the grown ups about deals and what gangs to watch for, the younger ones mostly being gleard down by the older woman whenever Maddie or Jazz wasn't looking, yet she stayed silent like a disapproving teacher.
During this whole time Danny noticed their dad and Gruncle Vinnie were missing, neither showed up until it was time to go home.
Ellie fell asleep in the back still snuggled up to her new cat, Danny was still blushing and frustrated from being embarrassed, and Jazz mostly kept a stright face. None of the adults said a word as they re entered the house, it was pretty late, yet both Vlad and Jack went down into the basement while Maddie tucked her children into bed for the night.
Whatever the future may hold will be interesting.
______________________________________
Damian was pacing around in a panic while Tim was typing hard on his computer.
Alfred the cat had been missing for two days, the thing is Tim had put both a tracker and a camera on the cat so he was desperately searching the files to find its last location.
The camera part was mostly because both him and Damian had watched a cute vedio about another owner putting a small camera on their pet to see what kind of trouble they got up too during the day and they wanted to try the same on the cat Alfred. But now it was a key tool in finding where he went off too.
Finally Tim got a hit and the latest recording was being uploaded now. Damian rushed to his side to see what was found.
Right now the old cat looked to be in a house in Crime Ally as it's latest location, but when they saw the vedio feed both boys froze at what they saw and over heard.
Tim rushed out of the room to get Bruce as his younger brother paused the vedio, right there were two kids, a boy about Tim's age and a young girl. Even with the camera being a bit staticie seeing the lazuiet pit eyes shook the young Robin to the bone.

Wrote this while a bit tired but I hope you like it, feed back and any ideas are welcomed.
Jack Fenton is From Gotham, a Headcannon
CstSo, Jack Fenton, Big, caring, Dad Shaped Individual who cares about Family and his Profession and would more than likely choose family if things went Funky. The Guy who has ran through multiple walls and is capable of fighting Ecto beings BARE FISTED and winning. This guy, who just looks at the mayhem around him and goes âAh, a peaceful day.â while Maddie is losing her entire god damned mind. You can only really get that sort of attitude about chaos in a few places, and I think Jack was born and raised in Gotham, and furthermore, I think his parents generation of Fentons lived in Crime Alley.Â
The IDEAS this gives me, like in a reveal gone sideways with the GIW finding out Jack takes Danny and hides out in his childhood romping grounds and the people just go âOh Hey, Jackâs back.â and they just melt into the underbelly of Gotham, no one really the wiser and the GIW constantly losing vehicles and Agents to the meatgrinder that is Crime Alley.
Give Me Jack Fenton who has SEEN SOME SHIT, Give me Jack Fenton who has DONE SOME SHIT. This man knows how to do a lot of things and the legality therein can get very Sketchy. Then give us the glory and horror of Gothamites slowly emigrating too/immigrating from Amity Park and itâs just like, That Explains A LOT.
I ran away with this, I shall now tag folks who I think would like this.

who you are and who youâve been
pairing: bucky barnes x reader
word count:Â 8,490
summary: Sometimes love takes a little longer to find you.
warnings: SMUT. Mention of past abusive relationship, drinking, swearing.
a/n: Â Thank you so much to @zeilenkrieg for commissioning this and being so patient while I wrote it!!
âMama! Mama! You here?â
You sighed as you looked up from your coffee, seeing your daughter coming through the living room. She had on that pair of daisy dukes that she stole from your wardrobeâthe ones you used to wear in the heat of summer, a white shirt tied to let the sun on your tummy. You used to scandalize your own mama with that outfitâŚÂ
You had argued with her that she had worn the same kind of outfit back in the seventies, and that vintage was in. But she liked to wear hers with cowboy boots and you preferred it with a good pair of sneakers.
God, you missed being youngâŚÂ Your twenties had been absolutely wild, even if they had started out with that horrible pandemic in 2020.
You still washed your hands after touching almost anything. An instinct that never went away.
That year and the couple years before had been⌠insane. But at least it incited real change in the world. The people had learned from their mistakes, at least for now.
History did have a habit of repeating itself. Humans were fickle, forgetful creatures like that.
âYes, honey bun?â You said as you stood up, moving to hug her.
At thirty-seven years old, she was the only good thing that ever came out of your marriage. That, and knowing how to wash blood out of clothing.
The only problem was that by the time youâd finally left him, you had no friends left. You were in your forties by then, with no family besides your daughter, and no friends left to speak of. You hadnât even had Facebook at the time to keep in touch with old schoolmates from university. And by then, what was the point? They were all leading completely different lives and probably hadnât spared you a thought in at least a decade.
âWhenâs the last time you left the house?â She asked, her hands on her hips in a stance that reminded you so much of yourself that it scared you.
Now that⌠that was hard to answerâŚÂ You honestly didnât think youâd be able to remember. You got practically everything delivered, you worked from homeâŚÂ
Shaking your thoughts away, you shot her a look. âIâm fine right where I am.â
âYour doctor called and said you havenât been taking your medication.â
âFuckinâ snitch,â you scoffed, rolling your eyes as you turned back to the window, staring down at the now cold coffee.
Josephine rolled her eyes. âHe said you havenât picked up your refill in over two months.â She came over to stand next to you, staring out the window with you for a long time. âMama, youâve gotta take your medicineâŚÂ You remember what happened last timeâŚâ
Ah, yes, the infamous incident.
Which was an incident in a long line of incidents.
There had been a⌠few times when youâd stopped taking your medicationâeither intentionally or simply because you had forgottenâand it had resulted in a stay in the psych ward at the local hospital. It had happened far too many times for your daughter to not be in contact with your doctor so she would be informed if you had stopped getting your refills.
You didnât blame her, of course. But it did make you feel like a horrible mother. One who couldnât even take care of herself to the point where your daughter had to.
âYes, I remember last time,â you sighed, staring at a cardinal. âYou know, my mama used to tell me that if you see a cardinal, a loved one whoâs passed is visiting youâŚâ
âMama, I signed you up for a seniorsâ social club.â
You blinked.
And then, you blinked again.
You turned to look at your daughter, disbelief written all over your face. âNo the fuck you did not. I swear to all that is holy, Josephine Ann, if you signed me up for one of those⌠those⌠pre-death support groups, Iâll tan your hide!â You gasped as some of your coffee splashed onto your sweatshirt. âI brought you into this world, and I sure as hell can take you out of it!â
âYouâve been saying that since I was two,â She said, taking your arm and guiding you to sit down at the kitchen table. âAnd itâs not a pre-death support group. I feel like thatâs offensive somewhere so make sure you donât go running around the group saying that.â Josephine used a paper napkin to dab at the coffee on your sweatshirt, muttering about throwing it into the wash and getting you a new one.
This was what you meant by your daughter taking care of you.
âJosie, really, I can get my own sweatshirt.â
âDoesnât mean you gotta,â she said as she came back with a new one, helping you change.
Sometimes you felt like she thought you were a hundred years old.
âHonestly, mamaâŚÂ I just want you to be happyâŚÂ You should have friends. You shouldnât be cooped up in this house all day, all the time.â
âWhat do I need friends for when Iâve got you? And Danny?â You asked.
But you had been hit with the sudden reality that except for Josephine and her girlfriend, you were alone. Completely, and utterly, alone. Hell, they were the only people you had ever invited over to the tiny one bedroom you owned.
Repairmen didnât count because they were there to do a job, not keep you company.
God, you had wanted more than this, once upon a time. You had once had dreams, of maybe being a writer and making the New York Timesâ Bestsellers List, of a husband who adored you and brought you flowers every Friday, of lazy Sundays eating waffles on the couch with the love of your life.
But life didnât end up the way you had dreamed it. There were no book signings or meetings with editors⌠there were no gardenias⌠and there was no smell of waffles and syrup.
And youâd made your peace with that.
Sort of.
Josephineâs arms wrapped around you as she rested her head against yours. Like a mirror of yourself, she was, from her face down to her toes.
Thank god. She didnât deserve to have to look in the mirror and see reflections of her father.
âWill you at least try it?â She asked gently, her hand running up and down your arm, her freshly manicured nails tickling your skin. âItâs not like a pre-death support group, as you call itâŚÂ Itâs for seniors or people who are approaching seniority and are still active and want to go out and have fun, but maybe need some friends to do it with. Please?â
And how could you say no when she wanted something so badly?
âAlright,â you said after a moment. âIâll go once. And if itâs horrible, Iâm not going back. And Iâm gonna tell Danny how you forced me to meet a bunch of strangers.â
She squealed excitedly, running off to your bedroom and going through your closet. âOkay, the first thing the group is doing is having a first meeting at a bar, and weâre gonna get you all done up.â
Oh, good. She was going all in.
âWhenâs the first meeting?â You asked as you sat on the bed, leaning back on your hands as you watched her.
âTonight.â
Uh. What?
âTONIGHT?!â You shouted in shock as you jumped up. âWhat?! You didnât think to ask me about this a few days ago?!â
She snorted, picking out a few tops that you hadnât worn in what felt like decades. âI signed you up this morning, I didnât know about it a few days ago.â
You watched in exasperation as she threw article after article of clothing onto the bed for you to try on. âI donât think I need to wear four pairs of jeans to a bar,â you said, beginning to pick up a few of the pieces.
Josephine gave you a look as she continued. âConsidering how long itâs been since youâve been out, I think itâs fair that some of these might not fit anymore.â
Well, you had lost some weightâŚÂ Not necessarily in a healthy way, but she was right.
In the end, she ended up shoving you into the bathroom and forced you to do a full showerâwhich meant body and hair.
You hadnât even gone to such lengths when you were going on your first date with her father.
She spent hours on your hair and makeup, chattering away excitedly about the vacation her and Danny were planning. A South American cruise.
Josephine had never married, never had kids. Never wanted to after seeing what her daddy had put you through. It left a sour taste in her mouth, and even though it was legal now, her and her girlfriend hadnât breathed a word of a wedding.
Though, you suppose they had a common law marriage at that point, if lesbians were included in it.
âPerfect,â she said as she got you to slip on an old jacket of yours that was a little too big. âCome on. Iâll drive you and pick you up.â
âOh, honestly,â you snorted as you grabbed the purse Josephine had shoved all your things into. âYouâd think I could take an Uber.â
The bar wasnât what you had expected when she had first told you thatâs where the meeting was going to be held. The last bars youâd been to had practically been nightclubs.
But this was⌠upscale. Sophisticated.
Now you understood just why she had put so much work into making you look presentable.
It didnât look like anyone else was there yet, even though most of the patrons were around your age, so you took a seat at the bar, the groupâs site pulled up on your phone.
âWhat can I get for you, miss?â The bartender asked as he set down a coaster in front of you.
A snort erupts from your throat as you look at him. âYou always call women as old as me miss?â
âOh, come on, youâre a catch,â he said, shooting you a playful wink. âMy dadâs single, you know. If you were⌠looking.â
âThank you, but Iâm not,â you said gently, your cheeks flushed. âCan I get a Manhattan?â
The bartender nodded, gracefully backing off the subject of you possibly dating his father. And barely a minute and a half later, thereâs a perfectly made Manhattan set on your coaster.
Youâd barely taken a sip before someone came up beside you. âDo you have Macallanâs 18 Year Sherry Oak?â A man asked. At the bartenders confirmation, he hummed. âCan I get a double on the rocks?â
The bartender dropped a large ball of ice into a glass before pouring two shots of whiskey over it and handing it to the man.
âMacallanâs, huh?â You said softly, your heart pounding. Josephine had told you to make friends. That was the whole point of this, even if the man wasnât part of the social club youâd been forced into. âYou know your whiskeys.â
The tall man took a seat beside you, his eyes boring into the side of your face. You hadnât dared look at him yet. âIâve always preferred those who choose a Manhattan over a martini any day.â
âAnd why is that?â You asked, finally looking up at him.
And oh, you wished you hadnât. He was⌠stunning. The very definition of male beauty. His salt and pepper hair reminded you of the photos of the men in the fortiesâŚÂ The 1940s, that is. Blue eyes so striking that you lost your breath, and broad shoulders that you knew would haunt your dreams. He was wearing a glove on his left hand for some reason, but you didnât linger on it too long.
But at least he was at least your age, if not a little older. Youâd die if youâd just sort of flirted with a twenty-something asshole who just bought expensive whiskeys for the sake of buying expensive whiskeys to show that he had money to blow.
âMartini drinkers think theyâll get some kind of award for their choice of drink,â he said, âas though choosing a drink that generally tastes like shit is some kind of accomplishment. Unless youâre just taking a shot, a drink should taste good.â He looked you up and down, letting his pretty blues linger on your lips. There were faint crow feet at the corners of his eyes, but they just seemed to make him even more handsome. âAnd a Manhattan doesnât need a fancy whiskey. It is steady and sure even with the cheapest five dollar bottle you can get from a gas station. Someone whose drink of choice is a Manhattan is sure of who they are and what they want.â
You hadnât felt this hot under a manâs gaze in decades. âReally?â Swallowing around the lump in your throat, you took another sip of your drink to buy you a moment.
âMmmâŚâ He stole one of the two cherries from your drink, biting it off the stem. You were transfixed as he slipped the stem into his mouth, sticking his tongue out about thirty seconds later with a perfect cherry stem knot on display. âReally. Iâm James. Whatâs your name?â
Butterflies filled your stomach as you gave him your name. God, you felt like you were sixteen again and being flirted with for the first time.
His eyes flicked down to your open phone that rested on the bar, the social clubâs page still up. âYouâre here for the meeting, too?â
âUmâŚÂ Yes,â you said, ducking your head.
âBut, dollâŚâ He leaned towards you, a charming smile on his lips. âYou donât look a day over thirty-five. Are you sure youâre a senior?â
Blinking, your mouth hung open in a soft o. âAre you planning on flirting with every woman in the club like this?â
James looked around dramatically, his gloved hand resting over his heart. âA club?! Is that what you call this place?â He asked, mockingly serious. âDamn, what does that make all those dirty, gross places these young kids go to now? Brothels?â
For some reason, you felt comfortable enough to shove his shoulder, surprised a little at the feeling of metal under his jacket sleeve.
For the first time, he looked a bit⌠uncomfortable. He had flinched a bit, his bright eyes focused surely on his drink. âUmâŚâ
âYouâre the Winter Soldier. James Barnes,â you said curiously, your head tilting to the side as you looked at him. âI thought I recognized you from somewhere.â
âIs that a bad thing?â
âNo.â
âYou sure?â
âMmhm,â you drawled, taking the cherry left in your drink and biting it off in a way that you hoped was alluring. âThough, I gotta say, it is a bit awkward to meet the man I wrote two papers about in high school.â
Shit, his laugh was beautiful. Everything about him was beautiful. Like Apollo or something...
Jamesâs head was thrown back in laughter. His cheeks were flushed, his eyes squeezed shut. âDid you actually write two papers about me?â He asked as he tried to catch his breath. At your nod, he smirked, leaning in close again. âWhat did you write about? How devilishly handsome I am?â
You couldnât believe you were saying this. âI mean, I can show you the papers and actually let you read them, but theyâre at my place.â
Before he could pick his jaw up off the ground, there were other seniors in the group coming up to greet you. Your throat was dry as the Sahara as you turned to face them, plastering on a smile as you tried to ignore the heated gaze on your face and the way he licked his lips.
The meeting was⌠long. Boring.
Or at least, thatâs how it felt when you had Jamesâs dark, sultry eyes on you the entire goddamn time.
Mind fuzzy, you vaguely remembered agreeing to come to the next meeting, and even signing up for a hiking trip they were taking the next weekend.
As you headed outside, you felt Buckyâs hand slip into yours, his long, calloused fingers intertwining with yours. âSoâŚÂ Am I gonna get to come over and⌠read those papers?â He murmured, his lips brushing against your ear.
God, you could practically feel yourself bursting into flames. You werenât gonna survive.
Thank god your daughter had forced you into a full shower.
But what about how dirty your house was sure to be?
âUmâŚÂ Y-Yeah,â you said as you turned to look at him. âBut, my daughter is gonna be driving me homeâŚÂ I donât want her to know Iâve got someone coming over. Sheâs nosey. RealâŚÂ Real nosey.â
âOf course, darlin,ââ he chuckled. âHere, why donât I give you my phone number, and you shoot me a text with your address when youâre ready for me to come over?â
Your head was swirling as you got into your daughterâs car, your phone burning a hole in your purse.
âHow was it?â Josephine asked nervously once you got about halfway home. She couldnât tell from the look on your face. âDid you like it?â
âHm? Yeah.â Swallowing, you shot a text to James with your name, telling him youâd text him when it was all clear.
âAre you gonna go again?â
âYeah.â
âReally?â
âYeah.â
She seemed both dissatisfied and pleased by your vague answers. At least you were getting out of the house.
Once you got home and said goodbye, it was a mad dash to ensure that your house was clean as could be. Josie had put in some work while youâd been gone, it seemed. Sheâd done the dishes and the laundry, as well as dusted.
Thank fuck.
You struggled for a solid twenty minutes to put fresh sheets and pillowcases on the bed, lighting two candles and placing them in a manner that you hoped seemed natural.
âShit,â you cursed as you smelled under your arms.
Okay, quick body shower. It seemed all that flirting had made you a tiny bit sweaty.
You turned the water to scalding and scrubbed your body down, exfoliating and using your best scented body wash.
And to be quite frank, youâd never shaved your lady bits as quick as that.
As you texted him your address and that it was safe to come over, you pulled on your clothing from the bar (though, you did put on nicer, matching lingerie underneath.)Â By the time heâd gotten there, youâd downed two shots of tequila for a bit of liquid courage and had poured yourself a glass of wine.
âHey, baby doll,â he said, a crooked grin on his face as you welcomed him inside. His glove had been abandoned, and black metal fingers lined with gold glittered in the light. âWoahâŚÂ You know, I wasnât sure how your place was gonna look, but this is very⌠you.â
âOh, really?â You asked as you offered him a glass of wine, which he gratefully took. âHow so?â
âI donât know,â he chuckled as he swirled the deep red liquid in its glass. âItâs cozy. Sweet.â
Your throat was dry as you watched his adamâs apple bob as he took a drink. âUm⌠so those papersâŚâ
Bucky whispered your name, moving closer to you as he set the wine glass down on the counter. âBaby girl, Iâm not really here for the papers, am I?â He asked as your back hit the island. âIf I amâŚÂ If I am, then just tell me, and Iâll stop this.â His slightly chapped lips ghosted against yours like the tease he was. âAm I here just for the papers?â
âNo,â you breathed out, before pressing your lips against his in a firm kiss at last. His breath was minty and cool, with just a touch of the wine youâd been sharing, like heâd brushed his teeth before coming over just like you had.
Could it be possible he was just as nervous as you were?
But he was perfect? Why the hell would he be nervous?
Your thoughts were cut short as he reached down, his hands firmly grabbing your ass as he lifted you up and set you on the counter. âThatâs a good girl,â he growled as he kissed down your neck, his hands working at your blouse. âCouldnât stop thinking about you during that whole stupid fucking meeting. Just wanted to kiss you. Just wanted to⌠to touch you.â He pulled back, kissing you fiercely as his hands moved from your blouse to hold your face again. âYou gonna let me touch you, angel?â
A whine escaped your throat as you nodded, desperately yanking at his shirt. Once it was off, you didnât hesitate to run your hands over the broad planes of his chest. He wasnât quite as toned as you remembered from when you were younger, when you used to (occasionally) stalk (lightly) his social media accounts. Thereâd been so many pictures of him on vacation with the other Avengers⌠all tanned and tonedâŚ
But you liked this better. There was a softness to him now, a gentleness.
You were so distracted by his physique that you didnât notice heâd gotten your shirt and bra off until the cold air hit your chest. âFuck,â you mumbled as his lips found your neck, trailing down to your breasts.
You couldnât remember the last time youâd been kissed, let alone the last time youâd had such⌠attention.
Especially when his hands worked your pants off and he stood between your legs, moaning as his fingers tickled your thighs. âYouâre so beautiful,â he said as his lips wrapped around one nipple, suckling at it and teasing until it was diamond hard, and he moved on to the other.
Gotta be fair, after all.
âJamesâŚâ
âFuck, baby girlâŚÂ Never been with a woman as beautiful as you,â he growled, kissing down your tummy. âYouâre not making it out of here without orgasming at least twice,â he warned jokingly. He was half bent over in front of the island, watching in wonder as he slowly pulled your silk panties down your legs and revealed your aching core to him.
âI-If youâre not comfortable standing like that, w-we can move somewhere else,â you stammered, suddenly growing self conscious. What if he thought your pussy was weird? Granted, youâd overcome thinking that when you were in your early twenties, after learning that each one looked different.
But he was born in the forties.
But that meant heâd probably seen an exponential amount of pussies!
Oh, god, there was no way youâd have anywhere near as much experience as him. The only person youâd ever been with was your ex husband, and he wasnât exactly the paradigm of lovers.
âHey.â
You refocused with a shake of your head, your eyes meeting Jamesâs. âYes?â
âYouâre in your head,â he said softly, his forehead resting against yours as he slowly ran his fingers along your sensitive folds. âThereâs no needâŚÂ Itâs just you and me, okay? And youâre absolutely perfect.â
Your heart was melting inside your chest as you nodded, stealing a tentative kiss. âOkayâŚÂ Just you and me.â
James nipped at your lower lip as he lifted you up, wrapping your legs around his waist. âCome on. I donât want our first time to be on a kitchen counter. Though I make no promises I wonât help christen every inch of this house after,â he said with a playful growl.
You whispered directions to your bedroom as he held you tight to his chest, his lips finding purchase on your neck. âAnd here I thought you said the super soldier serum was wearing off,â you joked.
The man snorted as he pushed you up against the hallway wall. âTrust me, doll, no lack of super soldier serum is gonna stop me from fucking you right,â he said, his voice husky and deep.
Before you could even open your mouth to reply, two thick fingers were slipping inside of you to slowly tease your cunt, his lips ghosting over yours. âDoes that feel good, sweetheart?â
You couldnât find it in you to be embarrassed at the whimper that fell from your lips. âY-Yes. Yes. Please, I need more, JamesâŚâ
James smiled into the kisses heâd been giving you. âIâll give you everything you want.â
âThatâs a tall order.â You threaded your fingers through his hair, shivering at the way his metal fingers dug into the plumpness of your ass. âYou sure you can fill it?â
He doesnât respond with words, growling as he kisses you fiercely, carrying you to the bedroom. You donât have time to think before heâs crawling over you and kissing up your tummy to your lips. âI need to be inside you,â He whispered as he stroked his length.
âPleaseâŚÂ Donât wanna wait anymore,â you said. Vaguely, youâre aware of the twinge in your knees from all the physical activity, and you knew youâd be sore as hell in the morning.
Fucking worth it, though.
James didnât hesitate to line himself up, the head of his cock pressing against your entrance. When he finally pushed in, unison moans fill the air.
âIâŚÂ I havenât done this in⌠so long,â you finally admitted as he slowly pushed in more, taking his time. Eyes locked, your mouth fell open in a soft âoâ as he bottomed out, his hips meeting yours. âOh, fuckâŚâ
âThen I better do a real good job fucking you right.â
You werenât quite sure how long you two lasted, but you do know he manages to pull three orgasms out of you in the space of just a few hours. Thereâs snack and water breaks in between rounds, his cool metal hand running up and down your spine to cool you down as you two whisper in the dim light of your desk lamp.
You canât remember a time that youâd felt so at peace.
A spark had been lit inside your chest as you two laid there in bed, legs intertwined. Both of you were quiet, his fingers moving to caress your cheek.
There were no words that needed to be said.
His sea blue eyes are sparkling in the dim light, and your hand runs over the sharp stubble that lines his jaw. It had certainly marked up your neck.
âI had intended on asking you on a date,â he said quietly as his hand found yours, bringing it to his mouth. Chapped lips kissed each of your knuckles like you were something precious, something to behold. âI didnât think the five minutes or so before the meeting countedâŚÂ But Iâd still like to take you on that date, if youâll let me.â
âThat sounds nice,â you said, a grin twinging at the corners of your lips.
âYeah?â He asked, sitting up a bit as his fingers brushed against your forehead.
âYeah.â A giggle escaped your lips as he playfully tackled you, starting yet another round as his hips rolled down against yours.
The next morning, you woke up alone. The sheets beside you were mussed, though the space James had been occupying was still a bit warm.
Jazz music floated down the hall, through the cracked door, and you could vaguely hear the clinking of pans.
It took you a minute to gather the will to get yourself out of bed and find your robe, but you finally did it. As your feet hit the ground and you pushed yourself to a stand, you winced.
You had been right about feeling it in your knees.
You forced yourself to walk smoothly down the hall, despite how much it hurt. Embarrassing yourself in front of James was the last fucking thing you wanted to do.
He was in the kitchen, standing in front of the stove and humming along with the old jazz song playing on the Bluetooth speaker. He had a pan full of pancake batter in front of him, a whole stack heâd already made on the side.
Standing in the doorway, you couldnât help but grin as you watched him. Heâs so handsome⌠and he seemed so at home in your kitchen. In your home.
Maybe heâd like to move inâŚ
You shook your head, knowing that itâs already too much.
But the thought was nice.
Him in his pajamas, making coffeeâŚÂ Him in your showerâŚÂ Him in your bed every nightâŚÂ Â
Yeah. Itâs a really, really nice thought.
âHi.â
James jumped, his eyes wide as he whirled round to face you. âHi. I thought I had another thirty minutes before I had to go and wake you up,â he said. âIâm making pancakes. For you. For us.â His cheeks flushed, turning a bright red as he turned back to the pan to quickly flip the pancake. âI hope you donât mind that I used your flour and shitâŚâ
âOh, no, IâŚÂ I almost never cook,â you admitted as you moved over to stand next to him, watching as he made two more pancakes.
As he carried the huge plate to the kitchen island, he teasingly grabbed your ass and squeezed. âMaybe Iâll have to stay the night more often, if only so you get a homemade breakfast.â
It was sweet, and domestic, and somewhat terrifying.
You hadnât had a man do anything for you like this since you were in your twenties, when your husband was still sweet and loving.
But even so, this was somehow better than anytime your husband made his famous burritos.
Maybe because Jamesâs cooking actually tasted good.
Your first date was to a movie, a drive in. Something thatâs designed to be vintage but really just looked cheesy as all hell.
But itâs perfect. Perfect and cheesy and romantic.
Your only complaint was that he didnât kiss you at the door when he dropped you off. He pressed his lips to your cheek and whispered a goodnight, and that was it.
It took two more dates within the same week for him to kiss you again.
Bright and early on the next Saturday morning, he knocked on your door, holding a bouquet of flowers.
âI figured I should make up for you having to be up so early with this,â he said as he came inside, kissing you quick before moving to put the flowers in a vase.
At this point, he knew your house almost as well as you did. It felt good, when you two moved around like you were part of a team.
âHave you gotten your coffee this morning?â You asked, already pouring two travel mugs full of the good stuff.
He came up behind you, kissing your shoulder. âI have, but you know Iâll never say no to more, doll.â
The rest of the group eyed you curiously as you got out of the same car, a few elbow nudges and whispers in the air.
âAt least I know no old ass dickheads are gonna come hit on my girlfriend,â James growled in your ear, his calloused flesh hand squeezing your hip.
âJamieâŚ,â you whined, cheeks flushed in embarrassment. No one had ever claimed you in such a way that made you feel so desired and⌠and worthy.
James made you feel worthy.
Which is something youâd only ever really gotten from your daughter.
It sent a bolt of arousal through you, and you were tempted to drag him back to the car so you could bring him right back home and do something about it.
AlsoâŚÂ Girlfriend? Were you his girlfriend now? Officially?
That just made you wanna find somewhere to fuck him even more.
But alas, you pushed the thought away as the lot of you boarded one of those white airport vans that took you out of the city to the closest state park.
âItâs beautiful,â you breathed out as you stared out the window, forehead pressed to the cool glass. The morning air was a bit chillier than it had been lately, signaling the coming onslaught of winter.
Maybe Bucky would wanna make hot cocoa together⌠go sleddingâŚÂ Would him, Josephine, and Danny would all come over for Christmas and New Years andâ
Would he even want to meet Josephine?
Would Josie wanna meet him?
She had no idea that youâd found aâA boyfriend?
âNot as beautiful as you,â Bucky murmured against the shell of your ear as his vibranium fingers intertwined with yours and squeezed. His stubble tickled your neck as he rested his head on your shoulder, watching the passing scenery with you. âIâm really glad I met you, dollâŚâ
âMe, too,â you said, grinning as you squeezed his hand back and leaned your head against his.
It was strange, falling so hard for someone so quick after everything youâd been through.
But you had a gut feeling. One that you had never had with your ex husband.
James was a good one. A really, really good one.
That reminded you.
When were you meant to tell him about all the shit youâd been through?
Despite the amount of time you had spent together already, you hadnât found the courage for it.
Soon, you decided.
But first, you had to get through the damn hike.
Bucky was glued to your side the entire time, even though you were a lot worse at hiking than he was. He would hold your hand, guiding you anytime there was a fallen tree or a creek. His blue eyes were soft as he murmured encouragement, quietly praising your every move.
It was intoxicating.
So when you two fell behind from the group, watching them go around a curve and down a hill, you dragged James behind a large rock formation.
âBaby doll? Darling, what the hell are you doing?â He laughed as you pressed a fierce kiss to his lips.
âCanât a girl be spontaneous?â You teased as you dropped to your knees, ignoring the way a twig was poking into your left knee. âNeed to taste you.â
His eyes locked on you as you worked at his jeans, getting them down and off, his nails scratching at your scalp as he got a good grip on your head. âFuckâŚÂ Are you really this needy for me, angel? Fuck, youâre so god damn gorgeousâŚÂ Look at you.â
Your heart pounded against your rib cage as you finally freed his length, a grin on your lips as you wrapped your hand around him and slowly stroked him.
Buckyâs eyes rolled back as your mouth wrapped around the head of his cock. âFucking shitâŚÂ Good girlâŚÂ Suck me off real good, baby.â
The group probably would notice your absence, not that you particularly cared.
Not when you had your man so weak for you. And all youâd had to do was get on your knees.
His metal and flesh hands guided you to take more of him in, going at a slow pace so as not to hurt you. He was so big there was no way youâd get all of him down your throat but what you couldnât take in your mouth, you pleasured with your hands.
Pleasuring your partner like this was addicting. Youâd never felt the desireâno, the incessant needâto please your ex husband. All you could think about was getting Bucky off, making him feel so good that he couldnât see or walk straight.
You choked around him as you took him as deep as possible, your eyes glassy. When you popped off, you stroked him as you moved down to carefully suck at his balls, fighting a grin as he gasped, his hips stuttering. Before he could orgasm, you took him back in your mouth, wanting to swallow him down.
âFuck, fuckâ Oh, shitâŚÂ Babyâ Iâm gonnaâŚÂ Iâm gonnaââ Bucky broke off with a shout as he came, spilling down your throat. His large hands stroked your cheeks as you swallowed all of it, barring the little bit that had gotten on your lower lip. âYou did so good, darling,â he cooed as he helped you stand, pressing you against the rock behind him as he kissed you. âAre you okay? I didnât hurt you, right?â
âNo, you didnât,â you said, a faint smile on your lips as you helped him put himself back away. âYou were perfect, JamesâŚâ
When you finally caught up to the group, a few of the others shot you knowing looks.
But Bucky just had a satisfied smirk on his lips, his hand tightly intertwined with yours even as you flushed in embarrassment.
âOnce we get home, itâs your turn,â he whispered in your ear as you all headed back for the van.
Your relationship with James was⌠wonderful.
It was easy in a way youâd never had before.
Within just two months, he was living at your house almost full time, to the point where youâd been thinking about asking him to move in.
It was like you two were magnets. Even when you both had work to do, you did it in the same room, slowly gravitating towards each other until you were sitting close, your foot running up his calf.
And heâd gotten you to start writing.
âItâs your dream, doll. Youâre never too old to chase your dreams,â he said one night as you two laid in bed. His metal fingers were tracing shapes on your spine, a chill from the cracked window ruffling his sweaty hair. âIf you donât mind me askingâŚÂ Why did you stop in the first place?â
Ah.
The conversation youâd been avoiding for so long.
Sitting up, you pressed your hands to your face as you tried to find the words to say. âUmâŚÂ I was married beforeâŚÂ I know you know, but, uhâŚâ Your fingers fiddled together nervously. You swallowed around the lump in your throat. âMy husbandâŚÂ He wasnâtâŚÂ He wasnât nice. At all.â
Bucky immediately sat up behind you, his vibranium hand resting flat on your back to reassure you that he was there, and to give you something to focus on while you spoke. He didnât need to speak for you to know. He was there and he wasnât running.
âI married him young⌠and I had Josephine youngâŚÂ Heâd always been so⌠possessive, but I just considered it protective,â you continued, pulling strength from his touch to keep on going. You needed to tell him this. You needed him to understand. âThen after Josie was born, he started getting violent. Heâd always been mean, but heâd never hit me until after I gave birthâŚâ
James was tense behind you, slowly scooting over so he could wrap his arms around you, his legs resting on either side of yours as he held you. He needed you close. Needed to know you were safe in his arms and that man was long gone.
âPut me in the hospital a few timesâŚÂ He at least didnât do it in front of Josie. Thatâs the one thing I asked of him that he listened to.â You couldnât help but snort as you slowly relaxed back against him. âShe always thought all the bruises and shit was just a side effect of how clumsy I amâŚÂ But she came home one day during college, to surprise usâŚÂ She walked in on him holding a frying pan above his head, about to swing again. She jumped in between us and told him if he ever touched me again, sheâd kill him.â You let out a breath you hadnât realized youâd been holding as his lips pressed to your bare shoulder. It was soothing, feeling his skin against yours. âShe moved me out of that house and into her apartment, helped me get the divorce, get back on my feetâŚâ
âRemind me to tell Josephine thank you,â he said quietly as he squeezed you close. âThank you for telling me, dollâŚÂ IâŚÂ I canât imagine how hard that wasâŚÂ But heâll never touch you again. No one will ever touch you again if you donât want it.â
âI know.â
He nuzzled into your hair, breathing in the scent of your shampoo. âI love you. So muchâŚâ
A peace settled over you as you rested your head back against his, allowing yourself to truly fall into him, to relax. âAnd I love youâŚâ
After that night, Bucky slept over at your place five to six nights a week, only going home to get more clothes and do his laundry really, even though youâd told him a million times he could do it at your place.
âWake up, sweetheart,â he murmured in your ear one morning, pushing your hair away from your face. âTime to get upâŚÂ Iâve got breakfast ready for youâŚâ
Groaning, you tried to pull him down for more cuddle time, but he wasnât having it. He always woke up before you, too many years a soldier coming into play. Heâd go for a run and make breakfast before waking you up.
âCome on, doll,â he chuckled, pressing a quick kiss to your lips as he got you to sit up, your vision blurry from sleep still. âMedicine,â he said, pressing your pills into your palm and putting a glass of water in your other.Â
Ever since heâd found out about your prescriptions and how you had a hard time remembering to take them, heâd taken it upon himself to make sure you did, every morning and night without fail.
âWhatâd you make this morning?â You asked sleepily after swallowing your pills, letting him pull you to your feet. His t-shirt clung to you as you followed him down the hall. Your hand was tucked into his as you rounded the corner to the kitchen.
What neither of you had heard was the sound of the front door opening.
âMama?! What the hell?!â Josephine demanded, standing in the kitchen with Danny right behind her. âWho the fuck is this?! What is he doing here?!â
Oh.
Yeah.
Youâd neglected to tell your daughter, afraid of how she might take it.
âHello. Iâm James. Or Bucky,â your boyfriend said as he held out his hand to you, clearly unashamed and standing his ground even though he was only wearing a pair of pajama pants.
âWhat the fuck are you doing here?!â Your daughter repeated angrily, ignoring his hand.
âJosie,â Danny began, trying to soothe her.
But your daughter was nothing but determined when she was in her protective mode.
Before you could open your mouth, Bucky supplied, âIâm her boyfriend.â
You felt a flush coming over you as she stared at the two of you, slack-jawed. âHe is,â you said, wrapping both of your arms around his metal one. You were so nervous, you were shaking.
âWhen did this happen?!â She demanded, beginning to pace back and forth around the kitchen.
âUmâŚÂ The first meeting at the bar⌠for the club,â you said. Seeing her so upset made your anxiety spike, and you knew James could feel it, could hear the way your heart rate increased exponentially.
Josephine whirled on you, her eyesâso much like yoursâwide with disbelief. No. Betrayal. âYouâve been seeing someone for almost three months and you didnât tell me?â
âIâŚâ Tears pricked your eyes as you tightened your grip on Buckyâs arm. This was not the way you wanted them meeting to go. âI was scared⌠of how youâd reactâŚâ
At that moment, Bucky turned to meet your eyes, his forehead almost pressing against yours. âDarling, I feel like this is a conversation you two should have alone, yeah? So Iâm gonna takeâDanny, right? YeahâDanny to the living room with some coffee so we can get to know each other, okay?â
After a nod, and a squeeze of his hand, he got two mugs of coffee and led your daughterâs girlfriend to the living room. You could see them sitting down from the corner of your eyes, but you were much too focused on Josephine.
âMama, Iââ
âI love him,â you said, before she could say anything more.
Her eyes were shining, locked on you as she waited for you to speak. In her gut, she knew this was something you needed to get out.
âI love him more than Iâve ever loved a man. More than I loved your father,â you whispered, your voice cracking. âAnd I knowâŚÂ I know youâre as protective as you are because you saw how he treated me. You saw how much I hid that he was hurting you, but Jamie isnât like that.â Your fingers fiddled as you tried to keep yourself from pacing. âHeâs kind and adoring and gentle andâŚÂ and he loves me. More than I thought anyone could ever love me. And I know you feel like you need to take care of me and I am so grateful. And I still need you. Everyday. But BuckyâŚÂ I love him. I love him and he loves me and we take care of each other.â
Josephine reached out, slowly taking your hands in hers. âHeâŚÂ He makes you happy? He takes care of you and youâre safe?â She asked, voice trembling as a few tears rolled down her cheeks.
âYeah. He takes real good care of me,â you insisted with a weak laugh. âAnd Iâve never been so happy before, honey. I promise.â
âOkayâŚ,â she said, taking a deep breath. âIâm still giving him the shovel talk.â
Bucky looked up as Josephine entered the living room, looking much calmer. He wasnât sure what youâd said, but it had seemed to placate her for the time being.
âCan we talk outside?â She asked him, keeping her chin high.
God, she looked so much like you.
He nodded stiffly, getting to his feet and leaving his mug behind as he followed her to the front door and out onto the porch. The former super soldier watched as she paced back and forth, biting her thumb. âIâve heard a lot about you,â he said finally, breaking the silence.
Josie stopped in her tracks, listening quietly.
âYour mama loves you something fierce.â Nervously rubbing his hands on his pajama pants, he couldnât remember the last time heâd been so nervous meeting a girlâs family.
Though, he supposed it was a bit different when it was meeting your girlfriendâs daughter.
âAnd I love her.â
Your daughter, your mini me, stared him directly in the eyes. âIâm sure sheâs told you about my father. What he did.â
âShe did.â
âSo you know that if you put one fucking foot out of line, Iâll filet you?â
âI do.â
She eyed him for a long moment. âWhat are you in this for? Whatâs the long term?â She asked. âIâve heard of elders just⌠settling for someone because they donât wanna be alone in their twilight years. Is that what this is?â
Bucky tried really hard not to feel a little bit offended. He wasnât that old. âIâve been alive since 1917,â he said slowly. âI have no doubt you know who I am. But Iâve been alive a hundred and something years, and Iâve never met someone who makes me feel the way your mom does.â His heart clenched inside his chest as he thought of you, seeing your shy smile in the mornings, how you clung to him when you went out in public, the sound of your voice as you read an excerpt of your writing to him, so nervous about what he would think. âAnd IâŚÂ I can say that everything Iâve been throughâŚÂ Everything Iâve ever been through was worth it, because I got to meet her. And I get to be hers for the years I have left.â
She looked absolutely speechless. âGood,â she said, coughing to clear her throat. âGood. I justâŚÂ I canât see her get hurt again. Not after everything.â
âTrust me, I donât plan to,â he said, his mouth dry. âIâŚÂ I actually have something to ask you aboutâŚÂ Been waiting to meet you to talk to you about itâŚâ
Inside, you paced the kitchen and living room, going back and forth and back and forth, sometimes moving to the window to try to hear what they were saying. But they were keeping it all very hushed.
âItâs gonna be fine, mama,â Danny said, standing up and moving to wrap her arms around you. âJosieâll see how much you two love each other, and itâll be fine. Sheâs just gotta have her protective moment. You know how she is.â
Sniffling, you hugged her tightly. âI shouldnât have kept it from her for so longâŚÂ I was just so nervousâŚÂ They bothâŚÂ They both mean the world to me.â You paused, snorting. âI knew youâd approve of him. I wasnât so worried about you.â
âOh, please, the way that man looked at you?â She said, laughing as she kissed your forehead. âMama, thereâs no way in hell that man would ever hurt you. He looks at you like youâre his entire universe.â
Heart warm, you glanced towards the front door, wishing theyâd just come inside already. âIâve never felt something like thisâŚÂ But fuck, if the whole shit show thatâs my life wasnât worth it for himâŚÂ I wouldnât change a thing, as long as it means I get to end up with him.â
You broke out of her grasp as the front door opened and they came back inside, looking relaxed and even⌠happy? âWell? You arenât gonna kill him?â You asked Josie as you moved to James, heart racing.
âNahâŚ,â she said, giving him what seemed like a secretive smile. âAs far as dads goâŚÂ Heâd be pretty nice to have.â
âWhat?â You said, brows furrowing as you looked between the two of them.
Bucky chuckled, winking at Josephine as he led you to the stove where breakfast was still waiting, making you waddle as his arms wrapped around you from behind. âDonât worry your pretty head about it, baby doll. Itâs all good.â
You still couldnât help but feel like the two were planning something as he made your plate for you, cutting up your pancakes and filling up your coffee. âWhy do I feel like you two are gonna end up ganging up on me?â
âOh, come on, mama,â Josephine said with a smirk on her face. Her and Danny had made their own plates and joined you and Bucky in the living room. âHow could you ever accuse us of such a thing?â
âYeah,â James said as he fed you a bite of pancake. âHow could you ever accuse us of such a thing?â He asked, before leaning in and stealing a kiss. âI love you.â
Youâd never felt more relaxed, surrounded by the people you loved the most in the world. What youâd said to Josephine had been true.
âI love you more,â you said, leaning back in for another kiss.
Youâd never been so happy.

Speaking of being in the closet, how do your OCs celebrate pride month?? Especially curious about Laken and their relationship with pride
For a lot of my OCs, pride is complicated and complex for a variety of reasons. Probably the person for whom it's the simplest is actually Kauri.
Kauri loves Pride and has a lot of friends in the bar scene who are heavily involved in setting up their city's local parade, he's right there in the thick of the crowds having the time of his life. Being gay has never been something Kauri Grant struggled with - and he doesn't have the memories of Liam Harker's worries. However, Liam grew up in small-town Midwestern America and he WAS worried and anxious about his sexuality for a long time. Kauri has none of those memories and none of those worries and enjoys Pride to the fullest.
For Chris - Ronnie took Tristan to his first pride parade when he was fourteen years old, after Tristan admitted to her he was interested in it and might be attracted to multiple genders. He was vaguely embarrassed and also wildly thrilled when his mom put on a Proud Parent shirt and took him right down there to have fun with his noise-cancelling headphones on and a promise to leave as soon as the crowds overwhelmed him.
Chris as an adult doesn't do the parade and the crowds super well, but he likes Pride and likes to go with a group of friends and stay to the outer edges of things where it's easy for him to just turn and go somewhere quieter as soon as he needs to. He is proud of himself - not so much for his attractions, but for fighting through what was done to him to have open, honest, loving relationships again. Even though it hurt to get to that point, even though it was hard. He made it, and he's fiercely proud of himself for it.
Jake doesn't do Pride as an event, but he is, quietly, proud of anyone who has fought through to accept and embrace who they are. He tends to make grumpy noises when asked to be celebratory, but it's a front, and everyone knows he's proud of them regardless.
Krista is the person that Target makes Pride merchandise for. She fills her house with it. She buys her cat a rainbow collar. She wears lesbian-flag t-shirts. She has a lesbian flag banner she hangs up on the wall. In Krista's apartment, Pride is treated like a monthlong holiday. Her girlfriend is sort of baffled by her enthusiasm but also delighted by it. She always thinks, a little, of the daughter of her owner who abandoned her - the daughter told Krista she liked girls, and was the first person Krista remembers confessing her own attraction to girls to as well.
Somewhere deep inside, some part of Krista still remembers being kicked out of her house when she came out to her parents. Some part of her is hanging up that banner and wearing that t-shirt and setting up the gay pride salt and pepper shakers on the kitchen table as a middle finger to the people who should have loved her no matter what, as a silent I survived you, and I can survive anything.
Laken is usually IN the local pride parade, and they have a blast. They've had their photo in the local newspaper before. Their relationship with pride in general can sometimes be complex and bittersweet - they confessed to their grandmother first that they were neither boy nor girl in their own mind, and that went well, but trying to explain it to their parents... did not. Especially not when they acknowledged their pansexuality. While Laken has recovered their relationship with their mother - who eventually broke the painful silence between them by admitting she would rather love her child than feel righteous, because righteousness gets you nothing but empty vanity and the love of your child is worth far more - their father has never come around to or accepted who they are beyond begrudgingly using the name they've chosen for themself. So for Laken there is a ferocity to Pride, there is an insistence of their identity and themself as nothing to be ashamed of or hide.
They love going with Chris, because the two of them have both survived attempts to quash their very identity, although they survived those things in very different ways. Pride is a release. Pride is screaming I am still here, no matter what you've done to or think of me, and I'm not going anywhere.
Danny and Nate go to pride events with Mina! Danny was out in high school and his parents never had any issue with sexuality (largely because, as fae and vampire respectively, they're so fucking old that the concept of laying judgement around sexuality is patently ridiculous to them) and so while he dealt with some homophobia and bullying in school, it was never a problem at home. Danny is nervous and shy about his scars, later on, but he still loves Pride, and he loves raising Mina in an environment where she'll always know that it IS something to be proud of, accepting and believing in yourself despite a world that keeps trying to push you back.
Nate grew up a repressed gay Catholic who only really accepted himself after his grandparents died, and so there's an element of hesitation for him in initially embracing being so visible about it. But being with Danny is good for him when it comes to that, and he is proud of his family, proud of his marriage, and proud of everything they've made it through.
#oc asks#pride#homophobia tw#it's a brief mention here and there but still#transphobia tw#VERY vague brief mention of that

what have I created?
idk if yall like this, but they just exist not i guess :/
ok the the first one is Royalty AU
first things first, when I say Royalty AU, I don't mean the classic shit we've all become accustomed to. Im talking about the good old Chinese royalty! And I want to emphasize that these guys will/should be dressed in century appropriate attire. As someone thats read a handful of 'marinette, princess of china' fics from the ML Fandom, I've noticed a common trend. Marinette wouldn't be in the culturally appropriate clothes, always ballgowns. Not that there's something wrong with it, its just most of if not all these fic are set in China, so I'd expect Chinese royalty to dress as THERE dress code calls for. And since this AU takes place far in the past like, it won't make sense for any of the characters to be in royal clothing that wasn't from there region. I'm not trying to white knight/gatekeeping. Im Guyanese not Chinese. But since JTTW and Monkie Kid take place in China, it's only right. In my opinion that it. You don't have to outright agree with me.
With out of the way, it's time for that good old AU crack
- Wukong is the king of the Flower Fruit kingdom(or a different one if you'd like, again I'm only familiar with what western culture has taught me, but I'll try my hardest)Â
- heâs single but rumor has it he used to/still is dating the Vigilante/thief The Six Eared Macaque
- *chants ShadowPeach violently*Â
- no one know whether it true or not
- On of his wanders around the kingdom he finds an abandoned baby in a basket.Â
- and no shit sherlock it's fucking baby XiaotianÂ
- I think we all know where this is going because i'm a simp for Monkey Dad & Monkie Son shenanigans
- Xiaotian becomes prince
Shit, ill be referring to Xiaotian as Mk from now on, I mentioned this before in a fic I wrote for lmk that Mk's a nickname for Xiaotian for some reason- wait i don't have to explain my self to you people!
- Sun loves his son
- MK is treated differently by staff and others because he's not blood related to the king
- no one mistreats MK per say, because there King loved his adopted son, but words are said behind his back
- Sometimes MK hears whatâs said, and he feels as if he won't live up to his dadâs legacy.
- He meets Mei during a festival
- Mei is from a noble family, that wouldn't mind if they got a connection into the royal family.
- but it becomes hella clear to Meiâs family very fast that the two are just friends, and will always will be. but hey there daughter is bffs with the prince so that's a plus.   Â
_
- the Demon Bull Family is rules a kingdom as well, I dont/am not creative enough to think of a name I leave that to you.
- It's a common misconception that DBK is a tyrant, when heâs not.Â
- most of the time...
-Â they have been at war with the Monkey King for some time now and settled for a peace agreement.
- that agreement being there sons to marry
- oooo original i know
- MK and Red Son are roughly the same age, Mk being 20 and RS 22
- RS is revolted/disgusted at the idea of being wed to the Monkey Kings child, even more so when he realizes MK is adopted,
- but, that all changes the second he meets MK while he meets him by accident when he gets kinda lost in the palace when he and his parents go to discuss the arrangements.
- the second he looks at MK, he's instantly in love. MK less so, he's nervous and honestly kinda bummed he's not marrying someone he loves but it's for the good of his ppl, and he'll do anything for them.
- RS isn't even aware that MK is Suns adopted son until MK walks him back to the meeting room.
"Oh There you are MK! I was about to have a servant go fetch you!" Sun Wukong says, gesturing for his boy to come sit with him.
"S-sorry for keeping you waiting I got caught up in my lessons with Mr. Tang" MK responds, sitting next to his father. Red Son looked gobsmacked. The beautiful young man he had bumped into, was the prince of this land? Damn, life truly blessed him. Or cursed him depending on how you looked at it.
- the two are left alone in a separate room for a while.
- And MK straight up tells RS why he's agreeing to this union.
"Look Red Son. I've dreamed about meeting my one true love for a while. And I would give almost anything for that dram to be real. But I wouldn't ever dare give up my people, for as there price they mean more to me. I'm doing this for them, no other reason" MK says, his back straight and hands folded neatly in his lap. The look in his eyes was a mix of sadness, but that was drowned out by loyalty and determination. It just made Red Son fall for him even harder. Clearing his throat Red spoke.
"I understand, for im doing this for the betterment of my people to. But I propose a wager"
"A wager?"
"Yes, if i can make you fall in love with me by years end, before our marriage, we can live together like in the fairy tales from far away. But if I fail, in a years time afterwards you will be permitted to find your own path in life" Red Son stated. MK took a moment to process what was happening.
"So, if you succeed in making me fall in love with you, before our marriage we can live happily ever after?" Red Son nodded in response, letting the younger continue.
"And if I shouldn't fall for you, in a years time after our union, im free to leave?" Red Son nodded once more.
"So, what do you say?"
...
"Deal"
In the end, your free to choose their fate, should Red Son win the hart of Mk? Will he fail? Or will he let him go, and let him travel the country, after all Mk's a free spirit and keeping him trapped in a big house is like keeping a cannery trapped in a cage only for its song, only for it to dul. Or will the unthinkable happen and will both boys find their freedom? together or appart? I don't know, because that's all up to you đ
personally, Iâm partial to where MK and Red Son both find freedom together. Like they straight up run away together to somewhere far away and just live out there lives together.Â
this could also be genderbent thing as well. MK or Red as their respective counterparts. Again it doesn't have to be, but itâs whatever bro. im just spitting out the idea.Â
Also, there is a main side plot that they fight the WBS throughout the year as well, along with other shenanigans you wanna throw in.
____
The second is a My Hero Academia/BNH/MHA AU
truth be told i'm not a big fan of MHA i think it to over hyped(this is also coming from the same person thatâs a Fairy Tail fan lol), and the fandom i don't even know how to describe that mess, but I will admit not the whole of its toxic since every fandom has some toxic members, some even more so.Â
I just sometimes find myself enjoying MHA AUs like the Fullmetal Alchemist, Danny Phantom, Evil!Deuk AU and several others.Â
to make it clear I don't see this AU taking place the same time as the main plot of the actual Anime/Manga. This could be either like 6-10 years before or after the plot idk bro. But iâll do this after the main story plot of MHA, so keep that in mind ya? another thing, the gang is still in China, the top hero school in the world just so happens to be in Japan, and itâs only ever mentioned by Sun wukong and other pro heros. So MK never attended AU. in short itâs only ever mention/ reference. Â
_
- Mk was considered Quirkless as a kid.Â
- he was just a late blumer, i swear Â
- Maiâs Quirk is called Dragon.Â
- it pretty much works the same way as it does in the show(duh)
- Tangâs got a knowledge Quirk,Â
- my man can retain information and heâs basically an archive of information drawback being his personality lolÂ
- Piggsy is a Animal that gained a Quirk
- in cannon to my current knowledge, there are two other characters that can confirm animals can become sentient. the characters being Fumikage Tokoyami, & Nezu the principal at the school UA. Â
- Sandy is just Conner Kent, aka he like superman but can't fly, or shoot lasers from his eyes. And blue. Â
I have two scenarios for Macaque and Wukong Â
*- The first one is that, Sun Wukong & Macaque are brothers. twins to be exact.Â
- they where legit people, but have mutation quirks that made them too like monkeys.Â
- the added powers were just a boues.Â
- Sun and Mac are close growing up, like there brothers but also best friends.
- the draw back to there quirks could honestly be whatever you want bro idk, same with the others tbh. Personally I like to think Sun just has lack of motivation, and Macaque needs to draw on other people's energy.
- Sun is a hero, Monkey KIng and Mac is a villain Six Eared.
- Sun was always treated has the golden child in the family, Mac always resented that, but there shitty up bring didnât stop the two from being good brothers to one another.
- soon tho the resentment became hatred when Sun was able to attend UA in Japan, while Mac didn't.
- Mac be angyÂ
- so he became a villain, and joined the Chinese branch of the LOV(league of villains)
- Sun doesn't know this till he finds out during the all out war during the main story. and by that time heâs a full on hero with is own agency(The Flower Fruit agency)Â Â Â Â
- when the hero's ultimately win and Mac is arrestedÂ
- This ultimately hurts Sun a lot, his brother was in jail now, arrested for his involvement and wrong doings, he knew nothing about this! this brother, his blood. A bad guy? why? he hadn't seen his brother since he left for UA, he hadnât seen him when he came home, and started his agency.Â
- this just puts Sun into a funk so heâs not as active as he used to be, and he starts thinking he might need a successorÂ
*- The second one is that they were two separate people that had similar quirks and both attended UA but Sun ended up in the hero corse. so 1A.
- Both Macaque and Sun have similar quirks, Sunâs is obviously more light based while Macaqueâs is more shadow based(this applies to the first one as well)Â Â Â
- Macaque was placed in class 1B, U.A.âs High's Heroics Department, I believe, you can correct me.Â
- In cannon Class 1A and 1B both went to the training camp. I can see the teachers pinning Sun and Macaque against each other to hone their skills.Â
- And because of that they become great friends  Â
- In fact when they graduate they both co-found there hero agency together in China and are a duo.
- But due to Monkey Kingâs popularity and Six Eared's association with shadows(people sometimes saying he has more of a villains quirk than a heros) the public seeâs Macaque as Sunâs sidekick when thats far from the truth.Â
- now itâs up to you whether you think that Wukong and Macaque would be in a relationship together, but knowing how cooked we all are, ShadowPeach is a thing here more than likely.Â
- If you do or donât support/ like the ShadowPeach aspect, the two would be living together regardless since its more cost efficient.Â
- They my be heroes but living costs are expensive! Â
- I would imagine there would have been a huge fight/argument between the two in privet of course, at there home.(or in there shared office if you want the extra angst of the other people they work with hearing them fight)Â Â
- If the two are dating, then this would either lead to an out right breakup, or Macaque just up and leaving with Wukong thinking heâll come back once heâs cooled off. But after a week, with no sign of his partner, or him answering texts or calls, not even coming into work. Wukong gets worried that something might have happened to him. so there wouldn't be a confirmation if they were still a thing or not.Â
- But Wukong remains hopeful, despite the nagging at the back of his head, and gut telling him to go find Macaque, or atleast make a public statement, or even just tell another pro hero about it. Â
- on the not so shippy side, Macaque and Wukong still have there argument, and much like the ShadowPeach esc side, Macaque up and leaves, and isn't seen for weeks. the only difference here is that when Wukong comes home one night to there flat, most if not all of Macaques stuff is gone.Â
- where as if this was the ShadowPeach side, Macaque leaves all of his possession in the flat he and wukong share. for the simple reason being, he still loves him and wants to go back, but Macaque being Macaque canât bring himself to do it, especially after seeing just how hurt Wukong looked when he yelled at him just before he left. Â
- in other words, ANGST DIALED UP TO A 10 BABYÂ Â
- in either case, its a news report that confirms Wukong's suspicions that he desperately didnât want to believe, and that is Macaque turning into a villain.
- much like if the two were brothers, Wukong just canât take it and is no longer as active as he once was, and is thinking about, either A) Retirement B) Saying, âFuck Society, Be Gay Do Crimeâ and join Macaque as a villain himself, or C) find a successor, and a way to bring Macaque back to there side, but most importantly, back to him.  Â
- also extra points if you're after people's hearts and want to make them suffer;Â - If there dating, Wukong curleâs up in the bed he and Macaque shared, holding/wearing something of great value to Macaque and just crying himself to sleep, where as Macaque is getting wasted on alcohol, as he stumbles out of the bar heâs in, he either seeâs something that reminds him of Wukong or while heâs trying to put his wallet back into his pocket, a photo of them on their first date fallâs out. and Macaque just cries in a nearby alley way. And itâs there where he gets indoctrinated into the League.
    - If there just friends, macaque heads to the nearest forest and just levels it, where as Wukong just gets engrossed into his work, trying not to think about it. you could add you own spin on this, again i'm just spitballing.      Â
- NOW BACK TO MK! :DÂ Â Â
- Obviously MK is a huge Monkey King fan  Â
- at Twenty MK has come to terms he's quirkless (HEâS NOT)
-for ANGST reasons MKs fokes kicked him out at this realization at 13.
- he works at Piggsy's Noodle shop, and has been since he was 14.
- don't need a quirk to drive or cook!
- the boy lives a content life with his new family, till DBK happens :D
- DBK runs a Mafia(in conjunction with TLOV) and has been in jail for like 5 years thanks to Monkey King, PIF and RS brake him out one night when MK's out making a late night delivery since Piggsy had the bright idea to go 24/7 service!
- one thing leads to another and Mk somehow manifest what looks like the Monkey King's staff, but its not, itâs MKs powers, it just so happens to be the same power the Monkey King has. And it practically goes down the same way in the pilot.Â
- but unlike the pilot Mk and Mei go straight to the FF Agency, after making a panicked call to Pigsy and Tang.
- one way or another Mk are lead into Wukongs office. Mei being forced to stay in the lobby.
- they have there convo, butterfly monkey squishing included.
- "And so, I want you do be my success-" BOOM đĽ
- from there they rush downstairs and see that the lobby has been infiltrated by the DB fam, and you know fight.
- once the DB family seems like there down, PIF wisks them away. Much to Monkey Kingâs displeasure.
From there stuff kind plays out like cannon, the calabash ep is just a conjoint quirk the Demon bros have. As for EP9, ill have to script that one out myself lol. I'll get onto it as soon as my will to commit stabs me in the face. Till then have a dancing Kermit the frog.
Now if you'll excuse me, am about to Kermit a felony :D
(For legal reasons thats a joke)
Psst @writingamongther0ses its done

(chapter four)Â @mochminnie @wolfish-willow
Youâre in the bathroom trying not to freak out or let it show just how much your mind was reeling from earlier. It couldnât be happening, right? Thereâs no way you were falling for Steve Harrington.Â
No, no way. He was so different from you.Â
But opposites attract right?Â
You grimaced, thinking back to the way his eyes flickered from your eyes to your lips. The way he too seemed unsure of going for it.
This would change your entire dynamic. Were you even ready to open up to someone else?
Steve knew you, sure, but just the things at surface level. Things you wanted him to know. You were afraid to even tell him about everything else back home, thinking maybe he would freak at the first sight of a parent gushing over how perfect he seemed.Â
If thereâs anything a person never is, itâs perfect.Â
In many ways, Steve just didnât seem like an ideal candidate. He never put his things away, snores too loudly, had the romantic personality of a ninth-grader, was obsessed with his hair way more than you were, and he looked for superficial things.Â
He knew it too deep down, it was better to ignore the flaws for the love we think we deserved instead of feeling contrite when the ugly truth was out there.
Thatâs where you differed. You needed honesty, it was the only way to live.
Knock.Â
âHey, you okay?â Steveâs voice echoed from behind the door.Â
You squeezed your eyes shut. He just had to be here right now, didnât he?
You think of something gross enough to keep him on the other side.
âI think the foodâs not agreeing with me right now.âÂ
âOh okay, do you need anything?â Damn it, leave!
âNo! I mean - no. Itâs alright. Iâll be right out.âÂ
You count down from ten, trying to ease your anxious nerves. You take deep breaths and exhale once you get to the primary numbers. At one, you stand straight and march out of the bathroom as if nothing happened. Steve sits on the edge of the bed in his dress shirt now, his blazer discarded onto the chair next to him.Â
Heâs watching the tv blankly, a rerun of a show you both had seen back home fills out the room. You grab your night clothes and return to the bathroom, changing as fast as you can to slide into bed and call it a night. When you return, Steveâs still where he was before, only now fidgeting with the cuff links on his wrist.
You should be paid for how much youâre able to get out of him.Â
âAre you okay? You look like youâre about to cry or something.â
âMy dadâs getting married.â
It takes you by surprise. Steveâs never talked about his dad before, not even to Robin.
âOh,â You say simply. âLike renewing his vows or something?âÂ
He shakes his head.Â
âMy mom moved away a while ago. My dad, he uhâŚ..met this woman half his age after her. Sheâs got kids from another marriage.â He flicks the cuff link.Â
âBefore I moved to New York with Robin, I would just see and hear them all the time at home. He was nicer to them, do things with them that I had to beg him to do with me when I was a kid.â
You sit next to him, bringing your hand to rest atop his own.Â
âThe night before I left, I just told him off. I told him it wasnât fair that he got to start over with another family just because he messed ours up. He called me before we got here saying he wanted me to be his best man.â
He falls silent, his lip quivers but he purses his lips into a straight line to keep himself from letting it out. You canât say much that will help him, but you understand his disdain and avoidance of weddings thus far.
âWhatâd you tell him?â
He shrugs. âI told him Iâd think about it. He expects an answer when we go home.â
âWell, at least heâs happy.â You sigh.
âYeah, for now. And then itâs onto the next one.â
You donât want to do it, but since youâre just letting the skeletons out of the closet, you might as well.Â
âYou know my parents are still together?â you start. âMy momâs always been this, overbearing cross that my dad carries around. She yells at him all the time but I think heâs checked out already. They didnât want to divorce because they thought it would damn them or mess me up. But I think it did anyway.â
Steveâs entranced by you, you were opening up.Â
âTheyâve stuck it out since they had me. And itâs just sad now. I think about them sometimes, just sitting in that house, eating their dinner and sleeping together, not saying a word to each other.â
Steve opens his mouth like heâs about to apologize for even bringing the parent topic up.
âSure your parents split up, but at least theyâre not miserable. I can tell you from experience you wouldâve liked that a lot less.â You conclude, removing your hand from his and leaving to go to bed.Â
Itâs been a weird night.
Steve stops you though, his fingers snaking onto your wrist. You turn back, thinking heâs going to talk more about his family or dive deeper into some other trauma. Imagine your surprise when he stands and bends to your level to pull you into his arms, bringing you in tight and firm. Youâre taken aback, arms flying up but eventually settling on his broad back. Your fingers clutch his shirt in fistfuls, taking in the smell of him.Â
âHey, Steve?â
He hums.
âIâm totally reading your boner right now.â
âAnd the momentâs over.â He says, pulling away. You almost frown at the loss of his body pressing against yours.Â
âIâm kidding!â You huff, pushing him back onto the bed.Â
You settle in after he changes, pulling the covers up to your chest and putting your arms above them in thought. Steve sees you staring at the ceiling.
âHave you gone catatonic on me?â
âNo, itâs justâŚ.this is the most Iâve gotten out of you in two years.â
âYouâve known me for two years.â He crawls in, getting comfortable.Â
âYeah but, you know, are these really things youâve told Robin before?â
âNot really.â
âWhy not?â
âShe never asked.â
Truthfully, it wasnât that. While Robin felt comfortable revealing the truth about herself that Fourth of July, Steve had learned to keep things to himself. Itâs how he was raised. But you and Robin changed that, especially with the way you tended to overshare things sometimes.Â
You turn onto your side, facing him. Heâs thinking about something, and he looks so magnificent doing it. The way his hair rests on his forehead, the way his fingers curl around the blanket...Â
Oh no. Is this how it starts? Admiring him? Craving his touch like earlier? Wanting his attention fully on you and not all these other women? It was so juvenile, feeling like this was your first love again. The strong feeling hitting you just like the waves did earlier.
It was no secret you were touch starved, but there was something in the way his touch relaxed you. It made you think sometimes. Whatever this feeling was, it was different from what you felt with Danny. You jumped the shark with him, you didnât really know him.Â
But with Steve, you were starting to. He was bare bones with you.Â
âGoodnight.â He whispers, turning the bedside lamp off.
âGoodnight.âÂ
âAre you telling me you donât know how to ride a bike?â You ask Steve, watching him shift uncomfortably and unevenly on the beach cruiser.
It was your last day being in Virginia, and you didnât want to sit in the hotel and gorge on food until you passed out. Thatâs what home was reserved for.Â
Joyce had spoken of how lovely the horses and horseback riding was here, but that was closed so you settled for the next best thing. Riding bikes at the beach.
âNo I - I do know, Iâm just saying this is a hard seat.âÂ
Heâs been adamant about this for five minutes now. Every now and then a girl will pass by and heâll try to sit, only to fall on his side. Youâve taken so many snapshots of this, each time bellowing with ridiculous laughter.
âWhen we go home Iâm developing this and hanging it on the fridge.â
âErase this footage!â He gestures to the camera, losing balance again.
âMake me, Harrington!â You canât help but shoot back.
Passersby found it funny the way you two were bickering. Even more so when you lent over to show Steve how to keep his arms and legs on the bike, him reassuring you he knew where everything went.
âI can do it.âÂ
âOkay, letâs see then.â You cross your arms and stand aside waiting.Â
He mutters to himself and puts both his feet on the pedals, not falling to either side this time. He grips the handlebars and pedals forward, passing you with an excitement lighting up his face that a child would have when they were first learning.Â
He canât manage the turn and falters, sticking a foot and hand out to cushion his fall. You catch up to him, ready to help but he lays down onto the grass and accepts his failure.Â
âCome on, youâll get the hang of it. You just need more practice.âÂ
You hold out your hand, waiting for him to take it.Â
âI know this keeps you healthy, but at what cost?â He grabs on, using you to balance him when he gets to his feet again. Heâs too tall and heavy for you, prompting you to waver slightly and hold onto him.Â
You pull away when you realize your hands rested on his chest, his other arm holding onto your lower back. He scratches the back of his head nervously uttering an apology.
Feeling the blush creep to your cheeks, you return to your ride, mounting and waiting for him to do the same.Â
âTry to catch up.â You smirk, racing off down the hill and squealing.Â
âWhat are you, Evel Knievel?!â He yells after you, wobbling and gritting his teeth as he follows after you.Â
You have the upper hand on him the entire time, often hiding behind shops and emerging from behind him when he thinks heâs faster. You ride until the sun sets, enjoying the breeze and the little bit of sun before stopping at an ice cream shop. Steve thinks heâs something of an ice cream connoisseur when you look at flavors. You two end up fighting on flavors before settling on two different ones and eating outside in a garden the shop owner called a hidden gem.
âNo way, cookies ân cream is the best one.â He remarks, finishing off the cone.Â
âMint chocolate is actually superior and I wonât hear another word about it.â You took your time, enjoying the sensation your mouth was on.Â
He shakes his head. âItâs basically gum! Itâs disgusting!âÂ
âBut it tastes so good!â You take another bite teeth first and moan in delight.Â
He groans in disgust but nonetheless is amused when you try to get him to eat a bit of it. He avoids your hand, moving his head out of the way every time itâs shoved in his face. You wait, plotting.Â
âYou have some on your lip.â You say, pointing toward his top lip. He licks at it, tasting nothing.
âThereâs noth -â
Heâs muffled by a mouthful mint chocolate. You canât help it when the corners of your lips lift into a smug smirk.Â
âFunny, huh?â He says, wiping it off with his hand.Â
He takes the rest of the cone and dips his fingertips in it, turning his attention to painting your cheeks and lips with as much as he can. You recoil and gasp as the cold sensation, trying to get it off but he keeps attacking.Â
âOkay! Okay! Truce!â You wave a figurative white flag. He stops, proud of his work, and tops it off by rustling your hair.Â
âIâm so gonna get you,â You promise, wiping at your cheeks and going to get him with the residue when you turn to face him and find your faces are closer than ever.Â
You fall silent, the trouble maker in you declining to come back for an encore.Â
âWhat, no smartass remark this time?â He teases.Â
As cliche as it might sound, youâre lost in his smugness. His smile falters, his brows furrowing as he realizes what heâs doing, the gap between your faces closing. You close your eyes first, testing the waters and pressing your lips against his softly. He pauses for a moment, suddenly aware of the gravity of what you were doing, bringing his hand up for your cheek to rest on. His eyes flutter shut soon after, diving into your lips and tasting the mixture of sweets.Â
He kisses you feverishly and desperately, sighing as he relaxes into you. Your fingers tug at his hair and the back collar of his shirt. He leads you down onto the grass, flowers decorate your head in a red halo. He settles in between your legs and holds himself up by his forearms, his fingers entangling themselves in your hair as he cocks his head to the side to get more of you.
Itâs been a while but both of you are antsy and eager. You kick off your shoes and immediately make quick work of his belted pants. He catches your drift and helps you with your skirt, pulling the long pleated material up to snag both ends of your panties.Â
âOw.âÂ
âSorry.â He whispers.
âNo, itâs okay, just - here,â You grunt as you try to help him from where youâre laying, lifting your hips up to let the fabric slide off. The cool air of the night makes you shiver.Â
Steve peppers you with kisses as you reach for the belt and unbuckle it. Hearing it come undone makes you even more aroused.Â
âHold on.â He says in a breathy voice, reaching between your bodies and lining himself in. You tease him by wrapping a leg around his torso and pushing him in slowly with the heel of your foot against his butt.
The feeling overwhelms him, letting out a sharp exhale. He glances back to your smug face and glares at you momentarily.Â
You move in sync, your hand grasping onto his broad shoulders and the other on his bicep to keep the pace. He grunts into your shoulder, lost in the lust. His hand comes to rest under your head to support it while also gripping it with each thrust he bucked into you.Â
Each thrust was different, pleasurable, and enticing. It fulfilled the need for him you had that night at the beach. You catch yourself smiling, knowing none of the bridesmaids or guests he tried flirting with got this far. Not even Sissy.
He hits a spot in you that rouses you out of your thoughts and leaves you mewling wantonly. You know he wonât last, not at the rate his thrusts are going. Heâs crying out, bucking against you in fervor, gripping your hair harder, and groaning louder into your neck. You made him this way.Â
Ever since the first wedding, seeing you out of your element made him reconsider some things. Sure if heâd gotten a girlfriend out of this, it would be good for him. But something about you made him feel the way he thought he felt for Nancy.Â
He felt seventeen all over again, giddy and in love and a little horny. He just didnât know if you felt the same. But after the beach incident and the way you took the lead first, all doubts went away.
Thinking about you, he slides his thumb into his mouth and lubricates it, snaking it down to the neglected pearl in between your legs. Your eyes shut in ecstasy at the added sensation, your back arching into him. You feel your legs shake and your feet writhe against his ass trying to amplify the feeling. His heavy breaths, needy kisses, and raunchy whispers in your ear are absolute heaven to you.Â
You come before him, muffling your lewd moans into his shoulder and milking him for everything heâs got. He comes with a final sloppy thrust and collapses onto you, knocking the wind out of you and leaving you catching your breath.
He pants, breath hot and heavy against your collarbone. Your legs unwrap from their previous position, now shaky and limp.Â
Once you two catch your breath after about a minute or two, Steve lifts his head to rest his forehead against yours. You both chuckle, finally acknowledging the broken tension.
Steve kisses you again, this time without fear or doubt. Just pure adoration.Â
You donât really feel yourself fall asleep, neither does he. But youâre definitely mortified in the morning when you hear voices that wake you up with a start.
âCooterâs out.â The old gardener points out.
The statement wakes you up, and when you realize you just flashed your privates you stand up quickly and shake Steve awake. He groans, but opens his eyes, his smile dropping once he notices the man in front of you two.Â
âCooterâs out.â The old man repeats.
You pull the skirt all the way down and grab your shoes quickly while Steve tucks himself back in and apologizes profusely. You grab his hand and race out of the garden, red as a tomato and grab the bikes to go back to the hotel.Â
The car ride to the airport is quiet. You thank yourself for bringing something to read to avoid mentioning the embarrassing aftermath. Steve didnât bring anything to distract him like you did, but he glances at you every so often. When your eyes meet, you both turn away quickly. But the smile on both your faces betrays you both.Â
Steve doesnât even bother flirting with the flight attendant this time, his eyes are completely on you. It feels odd. You canât even find a smart-ass thing to say, itâs like youâre short-circuiting. You didnât know what he was thinking, but if the constant staring and easy smiles and looks of adoration he gave you were any indications, he was whipped.
You sigh in relief as you plop onto the couch, letting all your things fall after Steve gets in. He takes the initiative to break the ice when he collapses onto your chest.Â
Youâre winded again. âWhoa, someone ate too much shrimp at the wedding.â
Steve suppresses a chuckle, taking you in. You had some type of glow heâd never noticed before.
âSoâŚâ He begins.
âSoâŚâ
âAbout last night,â he starts but you cut him off.
âWe donât need to talk about it, you know if you donât want to.âÂ
âI do.â He murmurs into your chest. He hugs your body, his head resting on your chest the same way Mickey would do it.Â
Damn it, you actually liked this.Â
âGreat sex.â You blurt, shutting your eyes in disbelief at how awkward he suddenly made you.
His dimples peeked out as he felt himself chuckling. âYeah, great sex.â
âIâm sorry,â you jittered. âIâm never usually like this.â
âOh, I know. But itâs okay. I had fun.âÂ
You havenât felt this excited for something to potentially happen since you met Danny. But even now you were hopeful.
âSteve?â
âHmm?â
âDo you want me to go with you to your dadâs wedding?â
He mustâve remembered he had to answer that best man question because heâs unmoving.
How bad can it be? He thinks. Now that I have you.
âYes please.â

I hope you post your c & c Christmas fic! I am having a horrible Christmas alone bc of covid 19 and could use a little cheering up.
Iâm so sorry you had a horrible Christmas alone, anon! And I know this is a few days late and a few dollars short, but I hope the first scene (and itâs a doozy of a scene at 3k words haha) from it helps?Â
Iâm trying to finish the fic now, so fingers crossed I have it all up by tomorrow. Itâs ended up being really long, haha, so hopefully people still want a monster Christmas fic four days after Christmas! đ
âNo.â
And damn, if Rio doesnât pop an eyebrow at that.
âNo?â
The question is enough to make Janeâs bottom lip wobble as she rocks in her galoshes, the sound of her wet socks squelching inside them making somethinâ in Rioâs head twitch, because shit â heâd tried to get her out of them at the back door. Tried to pick her up and cart her upstairs to the tub, ready to wash the snow Kenny had shoved down the back of her parka off, but she hadnât wanted that neither. Had been content to dart beneath his arm the second heâd lugged Marcus up with his other; even more content to leave a trail of sludgy footprints behind her through the kitchen like she wanted him to follow, and he hadnât exactly.
Or yâknow, he had until sheâd dashed past him again and heâd gotten a hand into the hood of her jacket.
âSo you donât want to get in there with him, huh?â Rio asks now, jerking his head back to where Marcus is already sprawled out in the tub, fuckinâ blissed out, his skinny arms slung over the rim and his body submerged in the steamy, sudsy water âtil he looks like some eight-year-old mafia don. Itâd make Rio grin â does â until he meets Janeâs look again, her bottom lip still wobbling as she furiously shakes her head, her rabbit beanie slipping down her icy wet hair.
Rio frowns.
âYou ainât cold?â
And shit, he knows she is.
Knows it because the second heâd pulled up to Glenvale Elementary School today to pick âem up, sheâd been cold. A last-day-of-school snowball fight havinâ ballooned out until the faculty were left frantically trying to dry off forty shivering kids, and whatever, Rio had thought. It was good for them. Work hard, play hard gotta start somewhere, and heâd plucked Jane and Marcusâ tooth-chattering selves out of the fray and blast the car heaters the whole way home, but the second theyâd tumbled out of the car, Kenny had thrown a snowball himself, and a fresh fight had begun.
And okay, maybe he shouldâve stopped it sooner than he did, but he had Mick on call and the last drops to organise before the holidays, because apparently people buyinâ up supplies of prescription drugs as gifts for sick family members is a straight up thing (and call Rio Father Christmas, because damn if he ainât deliverinâ on the fuckinâ miracle. Ainât even price gouging, although thatâs more because Elizabeth had turned a particular shade of purple at the prospect and he knew heâd never hear the end of it if heâd bloated prices, but - - damn, it wouldâve put at least two of the kids through college.)
Point is, maybe he meant to pull âem in after half an hour, but by the time he finally got back outside itâd been close to two full hours and the kids were all red-nosed and tremblinâ, their clothes soaked through, the evening just starting to yawn above them to swallow the last of the light whole.
âNo,â Jane repeats now, sullen this time, and Rio feels his nostrils flare in irritation as he stares back down at her. At least the room is warm enough, he thinks, watching the steam curl the ends of her wet hair, the ebb of the heating warping the air as it pours from the floor vents. The kidsâ bathroom is one of the rooms theyâve refit over the last year â a pet project of Elizabethâs that Rio had found himself involved in, mostly because he almost got as much of a thrill out of inventing organisational systems as she did. The big, low white tub set back against the wall with polka dotted wallpaper above it, gold light fittings and a long, deep blue vanity that had as much storage as they could ever need. Still â it didnât stop one of Emmaâs bikiniâd Barbieâs and a fuckinâ deluge of rubber sea animals from taking up space around the room.
âIâm a grown up,â Jane adds, sniffing wetly, pulling his attention back, and Rioâs second eyebrow raises to meet his first. âGrown ups donât have baths with boys.â
âOm has baths with daddy,â Marcus says helpfully from the tub, and Rio gestures back at him, taking in the way Jane just huffs out a breath and stomps her little foot against the white honeycomb tiles and it figures, Rio thinks, that one of Elizabethâs kids would end up with the fuckinâ stubborn powerball in that genetic lottery.
Figures itâd be Jane too.
âThatâs different, they have to share everything because theyâre a mommy and an od.â
At least the others ainât this stubborn, he reminds himself, scrubbing a hand back over his head. At least heâd been able to pile âem up with towels and sweats and direct them to the downstairs bathroom while he handled Jane and Marcus, but then again - -
He trains his ears to hear âem â Emma and Dannyâs giggles sounding through the floor beneath his feet, loud even over the downpour of the shower, and then:
The flush of a toilet.
Kenny screams.
Right.
Lotta other balls in that genetic lottery too though, huh?
He exhales sharply.
âAâight,â he says, looking back down at Janeâs pink little face. âYou donât gotta share a bath since youâre all grown, but you canât stay in your wet clothes.â
And itâs weird then â the look that Jane levels him with. Somethinâ too hard in the set to her mouth and too open in her wide green eyes, and Rioâs frown deepens, brow furrowing, because thereâs somethinâ in that look that tells him this ainât entirely just about stubbornness, when suddenly Marcus chimes in from the tub.
âSoup.â
And shit, no, theyâre havinâ pizza for dinner â Rioâs already ordered it â but before he can say as much, Janeâs nose is wrinkling up and sheâs rolling those too wide eyes and that hard set to her mouth is softening, and huh, Rio thinks. They ainât talking about dinner either.
âSoup doesnât have bubbles, Marcus.â
âThis one does!â he tells her easily, and Rio turns to watch his son glide his hands through the bathwater, catching soapsuds, a too-innocent grin on his face. âItâs an alien soup. Like - - like from Neptune. I got abducted! Iâm gonna get eaten! Help me, Officer Janey!!â
With that, he slides down into the water, flails his skinny legs up above the surface, fake yelling, and Rio huffs, exasperated as water spills over the top of the tub, but canât quite hide the twitch at his lips when he sees Janeâs look tear â the urge to play too already warring on her face as she steps closer.
âNo, Marcus! We can play later, not - - â
âHelp!! Hel - - blergh.â
Marcus splutters around a mouthful of soapsuds, and Rio does roll his eyes this time, grabbing a washcloth from the sink to wipe his sonâs face.
âYou gonna help him, Officer Janey?â he asks, glancing back from Marcus and they can all see Janeâs resolve weakening. She shifts her weight, puffs out her cheeks, and then, just like that, she caves.
âOkay, Sir Marcus, Iâll get you home for Christmas.â
And thank fuck for that, Rio thinks, keeping his expression carefully in check as Marcus grins in delight, squirming back up the side of the tub to make room for her. It only takes a minute for her to peel off her jacket, leaking freezing water everywhere in the process, and Rio edges forwards, starting to help her when his cell phone buzzes in the back pocket of his jeans. He pulls it out, checks the number, and hooks it under his ear as he crouches down beside Jane.
ââey,â he says, and immediately heâs met with a wave of sound from the chaos of the mall â the tinny, tinkling melodies of Christmas songs and the thrum of shoppers, the distant sounds of static announcements and the too-close bray of Annieâs laugh, but itâs Elizabeth who replies, her voice clear and clean as a bell.
âHi. Did we decide on the flatware set for your sister in the end? Theyâve got one on sale here at this cute little kitchen place, and - - â
Rio sighs, annoyance sparking at the fraying edges of his patience. He lifts up Janeâs leg as she dangles herself over the edge of the tub, pulling off one of her galoshes, and then the other, cringing when her soaked pink socks settle back on the floor, leaving a smear of dirty water on the tiles.
âWe decided no, mami,â he tells Elizabeth over the line, pulling off Janeâs socks in one rough motion as Jane makes a grab for a rubber fish. âWe already got her the - - â
âTowels, I know, but she didnât have enough forks for us when we were there last week, and if thatâs going to be a regular thing now, I really think we should get her the extra flatware set.â
And shit, Rio thinks, moving to kneel so he can peel off Janeâs sopping wet sweater and shirt as she kicks off her jeans and undies, it figures.
It figures because Elizabethâs been pressed about Carmenâs place since Carmen and Matt finally separated back in August, splittinâ up their assets and sellinâ the house. It had been a long time cominâ, and Rio couldnât say he wasnât pleased about it â after all, him and Carmen hadnât always seen eye-to-eye, but shit, she was his sister and she was a boss bitch, and Matt had always been the sort of belly crawlinâ fuck whoâd soured at any woman who was more of one than him.
Anyway, it didnât take all that much to figure out that Elizabeth was watchinâ Carmenâs marriage dissolve and her new life as a single mom with the sort of projecting fixation that - - shit - - just dredged up baggage.
Still, it was kind of fuckinâ funny too to watch Elizabeth try to help Carmen in the way she wouldnât let anyone do for her back when she finally called it with her own dumbass ex.
âYeah, those towels werenât cheap,â Rio says into the phone, standing up and grabbing Jane underneath her icy arms to swing her into the hot water beside Marcus, letting her eyes slip shut briefly when Jane kicks a fresh wave of hot water onto the floor of the bathroom.
âNeither is cooking dinner for seven extra people.â
Grabbing his cell properly now that Janeâs in the tub, Rio drops his free arm down, grabbing Jane and Marcusâ wet clothes off the floor and striding out of the room, down the stairs and beelining for the laundry. He grins, pleased, when he sees Emmaâs already put her own snow clothes in the washing machine, even if sheâs managed to spill washing powder all over the floor in the process of it.
âOne thing,â he sing-songs over the bustle of the mall behind Elizabethâs voice. âEveryoneâs gettinâ one thing. If you want to get Carmen the flatware set, thatâs two things.â
And he canât even see her, but he can feel Elizabeth bristle down the line.
âI might not be as quick with the books as you, but I do know basic math, thank you.â
Which - - shit, not what he meant. He grabs a rag out of the laundry cabinet, dropping down to wipe up the powder.
âNah, you ainât hearinâ me. I know you, Elizabeth. You get Carmen two things, you gettinâ everyone two things â Aida, my mom, your sister, your friend â we ainât doinâ that this year. We decided that.â
Vaguely he can hear her sister laugh over the line again, and then Ruby say:
What aboutâŚ
âNo, I think she has one of those already,â Elizabeth replies, and Rio sighs, tossing the rag into the washing machine with the kidsâ clothes. Vaguely, he can hear footsteps down the hall behind him, Jane and Marcus still playing in the tub, the shower a few rooms up, and he still has some business calls to make tonight, and damn, werenât they going to figure out which presents were from Santa and which were from them later too? He checks his watch and frowns. Â
âElizabeth, what time you cominâ home?â
âSoon,â she tells him quickly, then, to one of the others: âNo, thatâs too much.â
Suddenly, a cold little hand grabs his wrist, and Rio glances down to see Emma clutching at it, already decked out in her pink fleecy sweats and rainbow fuzzy unicorn slippers, whichâd be fine if her hair wasnât hanging wet, soaking into the back of her dressing gown. He frowns, pushes his cell between his shoulder and head again to pull a hair elastic off his wrist and tie her hair back up off her neck.
âOd, can we watch Frozen tonight?â
And Rio briefly blanches at that, but grunts in affirmation, letting her go only for Emma to come back and cling to his hand again, splaying his fingers so she can fit her own between his. He blinks down at her curiously, picking up his cell again with his other hand, because damn, it ainât like sheâs never held his hand before â sheâs always been a touchy kid â but he figured sheâd be out of sight the second he told her she could put Frozen on. Like sheâs seen the look on his face, she squeezes his hand and sidles closer until sheâs practically on top of his leg, and so Rio crouches down instead, lugging her up and carrying her out of the laundry and over to the living room, letting her rest her head on his shoulder as she clings to his side.
âAnnie, stop it,â Elizabeth says, annoyance growing in her tone, and Rio rolls his eyes, depositing Emma on the couch, and okay, maybe the kidâs just tired, he thinks, watching as she nestles back in the cushions, her big blue eyes only half-lidded.
He flicks on the TV while Elizabeth babbles to Annie and Ruby in his ear, like sheâs half-forgotten to hang-up, and heâs about to do it himself instead when he hears the name Dean pop outta Annieâs mouth, which - -
Fuck that.
His jaw tightens, loosens, tightens again.
âThought we werenât doinâ all of that this year,â he hums, tryinâ to keep his voice light as he loads up Frozen on Disney+ and grabs one of the blankets to toss over Emma, because wasnât that dumbass ex of hers off in Nevada this year with his new girlâs family?
âWhat?â
And sure, play dumb, baby, Rio thinks, striding out of the room as Emma wriggles down in the blanket. He heads back towards the corridor, hearing Jane squeal somewhere upstairs and Marcus laugh as he moves towards the downstairs bathroom.
âThought we had the place and everyone in it to ourselves.â
âWe do,â she tells him quickly, and he can hear her moving herself, walkinâ maybe â her sisterâs voice getting further away.
âWe ainât changinâ plans.â
Because fuck â theyâre a week out from Christmas, and they had shit on lock this year. Had decided on that together too after the whole mess of last year with Elizabeth having to do the six hour round trip to take the kids to South Haven after Deanâs car had broken down (fuckinâ allegedly, Rio thinks with a snort, because he could smell that bullshit a mile away).
âThe plan isnât changing,â she promises, raising her voice a little to be heard over the roaring opening chords of Last Christmas. âWeâre still hosting everyone, and the kids are staying with us, itâs just - - somethingâs just come up which is - - I mean. Itâs really not anything you need to worry about. Iâll tell you when I get home.â
Exhaling harshly, Rio scrubs a hand back over his head again, and shit â if this means Deanâs cominâ again - -
He pauses, distracted suddenly by the sight of Danny bouncing from foot-to-foot outside the bathroom, shaking with cold in his parka and beanie, melted snow dripping from his hair, waiting still for his turn in the bathroom. With a grunt of irritation, Rio strides up the hall, banging heavily on the door only to hear a strained in a minute from Kenny through the crack, and Jesus, Rio thinks.
Teenagers.
He covers the mouthpiece of the phone, glancing down at Danny who just shifts his weight again, snow-pale except for his bright red nose as he stares up at him.
âUse our bathroom,â he tells him, jerking his head upstairs towards his and Elizabethâs en suite and Danny blinks owlishly back at him, shivering still, and Rio jerks his head in instruction again because itâd be just his luck to have to cart the kid to hospital for hypothermia again.
âIs everything okay there?â Elizabeth asks as someone says is this all today, maâam?
âFine,â Rio says shortly, and then, just to annoy her: âIâll tell you when you get home, yeah?â
And it works, if her huff is anything to go by, and then when he hears cash or card? his lip curls.
âElizabeth, donât get the flatware set.â
The last thing he hears before she hangs up is the ring of the cash register.

In defence of Abed x Annie.
Thanks to the magic of Netflix, Iâve rewatched Community at age 24, and still found Abed and Annie to have hit the heartstrings as much as I did when I was in high school watching the show for the first time.
But watching the series in its entirety just reinforces my thought that Abed and Annie had so much potential that was wasted, and itâs a shame that the writers planted all these seeds to only decide that perhaps this direction was not worth it / too risky / unfavoured by the audience. But I mean, Alison Brie herself (and Iâm assuming Danny Pudi as well) endorsed them! Find here and here.
This was a pairing that with all the crumbs scattered throughout the show (I think we are all aware of these crumbs I speak of), couldâve easily played the âoh weâve been secretly dating this whole timeâ trope during the last episode and it wouldâve still made sense.
Naturally I did some scoping, and of course unsurprisingly the J.eff x Annie pairing takes the cake, while not a lot of love for Abed x Annie. So here are common points of contentions I see surrounding Abed and Annie, and my rationale on them.
Before I start, a note - I fully respect the J.eff x Annie ship and I donât intend on starting a ship w.ar/debate. I understand where their support comes from! I just needed to vent because no one else in my social circle watches this show. No hate please.
1. Abed doesnât see Annie romantically
I think on the contrary itâs been set up rather long ago that Abed at the very least is attracted to Annie.
Exhibit A: âWhat are you makingâ in Beginner Pottery
Exhibit B: âFlat B.utt and the one Abed wants to nailâ in The Art of Discourse
This video basically explains it! The summary: Annie is Pierceâs favourite, Pierce constantly insults Britta, therefore Britta is flat b.utt.
Exhibit C: Not even trying to hide it in Accounting for Lawyers
But, a romantic interest has to be further built upon finding someone attractive right? There has to be intrigue to their character, such as
Exhibit D: âI can only connect to people through... moviesâ in English as a Second Language
youtube
It is pretty obvious here that Annie is a rare someone who has successfully broken the impartial screen that Abed filters everything through. Jeff saw it too which is why he said Annie was the ark of the covenant before Abed fell for her disney face. I can only imagine Abed to be quite struck with Annieâs infiltration.
A romantic interest should also share common interests, such as
Exhibit E: âWhich makes Annie is my third favourite showâ in Paranormal Parentage
Iâve said before that for Abed, a guy who lives life and communicates through comparing it with television and movies, itâs not unthinkable for him to be attracted to someone who genuinely watches his favourite shows and commits to roles during cosplay. And who, besides Troy, would fit this profile? Annie.Â
And finally, the biggest indicator of it all, we also see how Abed views the Jeff and Annie pairing in everyoneâs favourite episode Remedial Chaos Theory. Keeping in mind that the timelines are rendered by Abed, out of all the timelines, J.eff and Annie only kis.sed when Abed left the room for pizza. As well, as conjured in Abedâs head, Evil Jeff and Evil Annie only existed as a couple in the Darkest Timeline. To me at least, itâs arguable that this alludes to Abedâs omniscient âdirectorâ standpoint that he may be the obstacle in the Jeff and Annie relationship - pointing towards him perhaps harbouring feelings for Annie.
2. Annie doesnât see Abed romantically The general consensus on this point is that Annie is only attracted to Abed when heâs playing a character. I rather think that being attracted to someone, and being attracted to someone during role play, arenât mutually exclusive. Letâs take a look at the different characters that Abed played.
Don Draper: serious, sophisticated, and smooth.
Han Solo: immature, flirty and a smarta.ss.
Batman: mysterious, complex, and brave.
Three different personas, yet Annie responded to all of them. Since the common denominator to all three is that they are played by Abed, I would like to offer a counterpoint that perhaps the attraction to Abed has always been there, itâs just emphasized when Abed plays a character. Who knows, role playing might even be Annieâs ki.nk. After all, during For a Few Paintballs More, it is shown that Annie is disappointed when Abed dropped the Han Solo persona after the battle ended.
Annie also loves big romantic gestures. Whoâs better than doing that than Abed? Since the beginning, Abed has already been doing big romantic gestures of varying degrees for Annie. With this, itâs not ridiculous for Annie to see Abed as a romantic potential.
Exhibit F: Staying in a room for 26 hours in Social Psychology
Annie: You sat in a room for twenty-six straight hours. Didnât that bother you? Abed: Yeah I was livid. Annie: Then why didnât you leave? Abed: Because you asked me to stay and you said we were friends.
Exhibit G: Rescuing her from âcaptivityâ and inviting her to move in in Remedial Chaos Theory and Studies in Modern Movement (even Troy was surprised at Abedâs invitation)
Exhibit H: Tearing down the Dreamatorium in Studies in Modern Movement
Annie: What about the Dreamatorium? Abed: Oh it's staying. The Dreamatorium is more important than any of us. But you're more important than our bedroom so we put the bunk bed in the blanket fort.
Bonus: Confirmed by Alison Brie
3. The show was about Jeff and Annie
Dan Harmon said that Communityâs approach is that anything and any pairing is possible. We see this is as the series started with the classic âplayer vs smart snarky girlâ trope with setting up Jeff and Britta as the main pairing. We also see Troy and Annie as the potential B couple in the show. The writers also threw Pierce and Shirley, Annie and Britta, Dean and Jeff, and even Chang and Britta in for a laugh.
And then the show subverted this all by introducing Jeff and Annie, and made Troy and Britta a couple, showing us that Community is a show that intends on breaking these classic sitcom stereotypes by experimenting with different pairings. Abed and Annie was no exception to this, as the writers often pair them up in different shenanigans and hint at possible grounds to explore*.
A few examples: Han and Leia in For a Few Paintballs More, Hector the Well Endowed and the Elf Maiden in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, spy partners in Modern Espionage.
No doubt that the show dabbled in and out of Jeff and Annie throughout the series. However, to say that Jeff and Annie was the primary pairing in the series would mean overlooking Jeff and Britta. Especially when Jeff and Britta have the whole love-hate dynamic, three(?) marriage close-calls, and emotional snippets such as helping Jeff reunite with his father in Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations.
Anyway, not to discredit Jeff and Annie, but knowing that the show explores the possibility of different pairings**, why write off Abed and Annie?
* Not to mention that the cop pairing in The Science of Illusion was originally written with Abed and Annie in mind! ** We also see a stray Abed and Britta during Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps.
4. Annie is in love with Jeff To keep this short and shipper-goggle free, Annie has said on numerous occasions that sheâs in love with the idea of Jeff, not Jeff himself. Specifically this scene in Virtual Systems Analysis:
Abed as Annie: "âŚWe love JeffâŚ" Annie: "No we donât, weâre just in love with the idea of being loved. And if we can teach a guy like Jeff to do it, weâll never be unloved, so we keep running the same scenario over and over hoping for a different result."
And this scene in Conventions of Space and Time:
Annie: All right, I may have been play-acting that we were married, and then the staff thought you were cheating, and I had to save face. Jeff: Do I have to worry about this? Annie: No, I was just daydreaming. I mean, I've married you at least a half a dozen times. And Troy. And Zac Efron.
Not to mention that their conversation in the finale says it all.
Jeff: I don't wanna be fine. I wanna be 25 and heading out into the world. I wanna fall asleep on a beach and be able to walk the next day, or stay up all night on accident. I wanna wear a white t-shirt without looking like I forgot to get dressed.* I want to be terrified of AIDS, I want to have an opinion about those, boring a.ss Marvel movies. And I want those opinions to be of any concern to the people making them. Annie: Well I want to live in the same home for more than a year, order wine without feeling nervous, have a resume full of crazy mistakes instead of crazy lies. I want stories and wisdom, perspective. I wanna have so much behind me I'm not a sl.ave to what's in front of me, especially those flavourless unremarkable Marvel movies.
*Shipper-goggle on: Part of me thinks this is a reference to Abed, whose iconic style almost exclusively comprises T-shirts. What Jeff is saying is that he wishes he is 25 again with his future open before him, someone who compatible with Annie, but here he acknowledges that he isnât, and lets her go in the end.
5. Abed and Annie wouldnât work as a couple Another point I see is that Abed and Annie are strictly platonic and are more like brother and sister. On the basis that they have made out a couple times and are attracted to each other, I would disagree with the sibling statement. Â
Troy, in contrast to Abed, I think actually resembles a more sibling-like relationship with Annie. Although Troy and Annie have the strong friendship of Abed and Annie, when disregarding the high school crush stage of season 1, their storylines never dwelled further down an attraction path, nor was there any specific episode that was dedicated to a deep dive of vulnerabilities and confrontation between them. As a comparison, Troy and Britta had opportunities to explore these setups (Troy admitted to lying about his b.utt stuff story and Troy helped Britta face Blade) - an indication that Troy and Britta were heading into non-platonic territory. Jeff and Britta too, had several opportunities to confront their feelings (up till the very last season), a clear indication of a non-platonic relationship.
For Abed and Annie, what I think pulls their friendship towards actual love interest potential is best pinpointed to Virtual Systems Analysis. Annieâs participation in the Dreamatorium prompted her to not only fully submerge into the way Abed thinks and comprehends his surroundings, but she also got to understand and address Abedâs stubbornness and flaws in a vulnerable way, confronting some of her own flaws as well.
Abed as Shirley: Your hospital school, young lady, is a simulation being run through a filter of other people's needs. Abed's been filtered out because nobody needs him. Annie: I need him!
And to point out this little tidbit in VCR Maintenance and Educational Publishing,
Annie: That's why Abed is like a brother to me. You guys are so alike. Abed: I can't accept that based on one time machine story.
This whole episode, instead of establishing Abed is like Annieâs brother, I would argue is rather doing the opposite. Abed and Annieâs hyper antics in the episode were basically matched by Anthony and Rachelâs blatant indifference and confusion. For lots of Abed and Annie supporters, this episode was a major setback. But I think it instead highlights how in-sync they are with each other, which is a good thing.
Another point, despite Annie trying to prove otherwise, Abed and Anthony had different vibes, and each shared different dynamics with Annie. And as Anthony pointed out in the end, who were Abed and Annie trying to replace in the apartment? Troy. The person who they are trying to fill is Troy - their roommate, their brother, their best friend. Troy was the brother role that neither Abed and Annie can fill for each other.
In Basic Sandwich, we get this exchange:
Abed: The point is, this show, Annie, it isn't just their show. This is our show, and it's not over. And the sooner we find that treasure, the faster the Jeff-Britta pilot falls apart. Annie: Got it. Thank you, Abed. Abed: You're welcome. I have a girlfriend. Annie: What? Abed: You were about to start a kiss lean. Annie: I was not.
Not only did Abed saw right through Annieâs anxiety and comforted her in his own uniquely Abed way, but he also felt the need to remind her of his girlfriend. The fact that he broke the fourth wall here is likely the writersâ way to be meta, but simply acknowledging the tension and bond there says a lot in between the lines. If tension does not exist, there would be no need for this line.
Besides, instead of thinking that theyâre strictly platonic (which of course is also okay), they would rather work great as a couple. In terms of opposites attract, Annie grounds Abed with just the right amount, while Abed clearly encourages Annie to be her true self and be immature. Such as this scene in Foosball and Nocturnal Vigilantism,
Annie: Iâm following him. Troy: You moving in here was supposed to tone us down!
Annie also doesnât just tolerate Abedâs idiosyncrasies, she actually likes them and fully participates as multiple paintball games and cosplays would tell us. Special shoutout to the missing lovers footage in Wedding Videography, which through Britta, actually shows us that Annie is the only one who would go along with Abedâs projects - while Britta found the project extremely weird and unhealthy, Annie thought it was fun and commits well to her role.
And while others may tiptoe around Abed, Annie isnât afraid to call Abed out when heâs out of line and makes a point to teach him about empathy in Virtual Systems Analysis. Remember that Britta tried teaching him this but it didnât work as well.
I am Abed Nadir... And I don't know a lot of things everyone else knows. I wander the universe with my friend, Troy, doing whatever I want. Sometimes accidentally hurting innocent unremarkables. This week, however, Troy went to lunch and I adapted. I now have the ability to enter the minds of others using an elusive new technique known as "empathy".
As well as in the entire episode of Cooperative Polygraphy.
They also know each other best. Abed knew her cushion preferences, was the one who spelled out her true pas.sion for forensics, and after living together, Annie knew how to navigate Abedâs peculiarities and to soothe him whenever he had a nervous breakdown.Â
Annie also knows him so well that she can predict his reaction.
They are also each otherâs exception. Annie was always the one who manages to pull Abed out of a trance and back to reality, usually with touch.
Abed is also very forgiving with her. An example is when Annie seemingly lost all common sense because she broke Abedâs special edition dvd in Foosball and Nocturnal Vigilantism.
Annie: Well, Batman, on behalf of all of us that aren't perfect, can I just say I'm sorry I broke your DVD? Abed: Apology accepted. But I wouldn't mention it to Abed. That guy's pretty ruthless. And that's coming from Batman.
And in Abedâs Uncontrollable Christmas, Annie was the only claymation doll that didnât have a weird form (except Troy as toy soldier of course). Annie was a ballerina because Abed sees her as a creature of grace. Abed was also the first one who got her âbrighter tomorrowâ diorama and responded with enthusiasm.
They are also in the same stage in life. As Dan Harmon explains the choice of Abed and Annie being the ones who leave the group, with Troy gone, Abed and Annie symbolize the many possibilities of the future - a possibility that makes them viable. I like to think Annie transfers to the LA FBI office after her internship and they reunite.
And as the Spice Girls said, âif you wanna be my love.r, you gotta get with my friendsâ. In Paleyfest, Dan Harmon says this about whoever Troy and Abed ends up dating, âI mean a woman that comes into either of their lives is either going to drive them apart or she's going to have to be really accepting of a very special relationshipâ.
Britta tolerated their friendship but to a point of asking Annie to distract Abed for alone time with Troy, Troy dumped the librarian as she called Abed weird, Robin disappeared, Rachel we never got to see much of, but was pretty quiet and separated from the group. From this, logically speaking, Annie would actually be the perfect match for Abed, as we all know theyâre the ultimate trio within the study group and a transition from friends to more will be natural.Â
Oh, and, Abed is wrong. Theyâre not Chandler and Phoebe with little storylines together, theyâre Chandler and Monica.Â
Anyway, thatâs it for my super long rant/analysis. Community the series is done and over, so there isnât a need for any ship war. All I want to say is, if #andamovie happens, hopefully, the writers will actually take a leap.

Suspended Animation
Phic phight 2020
Submitted by @ectopal: Sam finally asks Danny what he's going to do with himself after noticing that he as a halfa is not actually aging with his friends and family.
Warnings: swearing and mild panic attack. But there's also fluff.
Summary: It's been two years since Danny's accident and he hasn't aged a day. Sam wants to know what he's going to do about his future.
Word count: 2661
Danny was late. Which wasn't so surprising, but he was supposed to meet Sam at the park an hour ago and she hadn't even gotten a single text from him. She wondered what, or who, was holding him up. The Box Ghost? Skulker? Johnny and Kitty? Maybe Ember started an impromptu concert on the other side of town.
The idea made her shake her head and scoff. Yeah, right, as if any of those guys could keep Danny occupied for a whole hour nowadays. Maybe Johnny and Kitty could, but only because they had fallen into the habit of using Danny like a marriage counsellor, and that was just too damn funny.
For Danny to be this late, he was either caught up in something really dangerous or really stupid. Since the city wasn't exploding, or being sucked into the Ghost Zoneâfor the sixth timeâit was probably the latter.
"Sorry I'm late, Sam. Johnnyâ"
Definitely the latter.
"It's fine," Sam said, cutting Danny off as he swooped into the clearing. Getting caught up dealing with the ghostly couple's relationship issues was better than being shot at by them, or anyone else.
"Still, sorry." Danny settled onto the grass next to her, crossing his legs. He quickly scanned the area, making sure they were alone. Sam had chosen a secluded spot, hidden by a copse of trees on one side and a low stone wall on the other. There were lots of little spots like this hidden all throughout the park, but this one was the best because it rested on top of a small hill. On the other side of the wall sat a pond, so no one could sneak up on them from behind.
Satisfied with the level of privacy, Danny transformed from Phantom back into Fenton. The temperature dropped for a moment as the transformation rings washed over him. Sam was forced to close her eyes against the bright light, blinking away spots when she opened them again.
"So, what'd you want to talk about?" he said. "And why out here?"
Sam looked up at the open sky. Once the sun finished setting, they would have a great view of the stars. Danny always said he felt more relaxed when the stars were out.
"No reason," she said.
Danny shrugged. "Okay. You sounded kind of serious in your text, though."
A stoic "We need to talk," probably wasn't Sam's best choice of words, but it was serious. Worrying her lip, she nodded and turned away from Danny. She reached into her backpack, discarded on the grass next to her, and pulled out a photo album. She had a lot of photo albums dedicated to a lot of different things: family, nature, animals, friends. This album was special. It's purple cover was decorated in glow-in-the-dark ghost stickers. Silly phrases like "Beware!" and "Ghost Zone's Greatest" were written across it.
This album was for Danny's, Sam's, and Tucker's eyes only, and it chronicled their ghost hunting adventures.
"Whoa, I remember making that," Danny said with a grin. He eagerly snatched the album from Sam's hands and flipped the cover open. The very first picture was of all three of them in the Fenton's lab. Sam, being the tallest at the time, held the camera out, Danny in the middle, Tucker squeezing in at the edge of the photo.
"Do you miss being the tallest?" Danny asked teasingly. He flipped through the album to the more recent photos and picked out one of Sam and Tucker lounging on a bench, picking dried ectoplasm out of their hair. Even while sitting, Tucker had a good few inches on Sam. If they had been standing, that gap would have been even bigger.
Sam slapped Danny's hand away and teased right back, "at least I'm not the shortest." She pointed to the next photo over
Another one with all of them together, lying down on the roof of Fenton. None of them were looking at the camera. Jazz had taken the photo without them knowing, peering down at them from the Emergency Ops-Centre.
Tucker, on the right, was focused entirely on his phone, holding it so close that the screen's soft glow lit up his face. Sam lay on her side in the middle, chin propped on her fist, reading a book. On the left, Danny had his arms folded behind his head as a pillow and was just staring up at the sky.
Their heads were all level, but looking at their feet showed they were arranged from tallest, to shorter, to shortest.
Sam remembered that moment. They had been hunting for a ghost that could bypass Danny's ghost sense. Using the advanced sensors in the Ops-Centre, they were waiting to get a ping back that the ghost had been located. It took almost an hour, but the wait wasn't so bad. They needed a nice, calm moment every now and again, when they could just be together in silence.
Two years ago, they probably would have wasted a whole afternoon looking for the ghost themselves. A lot had changed since then. In the grand scheme of things, two years wasn't much, but it was a long time for teenagers. Both Sam and Tucker had grown, shooting up a few inches. Sam's hair was longer. Tucker had a bit of stubble on his chin. Their faces were more defined. Their arms were visibly muscled.
But Danny hadn't changed at all. He was half a foot shorter than Sam. His cheeks still carried a bit of youthful roundness. Despite being the most physically active of all three of them, his arms and legs were the same thin twigs from when he was fourteen years old.
"Hey, have you seen how tall my dad is? I bet I'm gonna have a foot on both of you," Danny said, holding up his hand to show how tall he would be. "Just look at Jazz. She's taller than our mom now! And Mom's not exactly short, either."
"Danny," Sam said softly.
"Don't even get me started on Aunt Alicia."
"Danny!"
He stopped talking. His hand dropped into his lap, fingers curling into a tight fist, and he ducked his head. "Please tell me I at least fooled you a little," he said.
Sam reached over and took the photo album back from him. Removing the picture of them on the roof, she flipped back to the front of the book, holding the photo up against the first one of them all together. Danny looked exactly the same in both.
"Not even a little," she said.
"Damn."
Sam closed the album and set it aside. Scooting closer to Danny, she bumped their knees together, making him look up through his hair. Even that hadn't changed. Sam couldn't remember him getting a single haircut since his accident.
"Danny... what are you going to do?" she asked.
His hopeless expression broke her heart. "I don't know, Sam," he said. He ran his fingers through his hair, hands shaking. He was looking straight ahead, eyes wide and unfocused. "I don't know. I'm notâ I haven't changed at all. What does that even mean? Am I not aging? Am I fourteen forever?"
Folding his hands over his head, he hunched forward, fingers digging into the back of his neck. "I don't know."
Sam reached out and touched his hand, trying to comfort him. But the moment she made contact, Danny flinched away, lurching to his feet. The sudden move startled Sam. She stared as Danny paced across the clearing, still holding his head.
"I'm just, I'm stuck, Sam! Everyone's leaving me behind! How can I graduate like this? Or go to college? Or do anything? You're all just going to keep going growing up and I'm going to stay here like, like this!" He gestured to his body. "But you want to know the worst of it? If this is my life now, then... one day, you're all really going to leave me behind."
The implications of what Danny said had the blood draining from Sam's face. She knew it was a possibility, but she hadn't seriously considered. Her, Tucker, Jazz, Danny's parents. Everyone. They were all going to keep aging, and getting older, and one day they would die. One by one, Danny would lose everyone he loves, and he would be left alone.
When Sam asked him here today, she just wanted to ask what his plans were for after high school. How would he deal with college, if he could even go? What would he do about work? What would he do about his parents?
But now he was spiralling into a panic and Sam didn't know what to do. The conversation went wrong so fast it gave her whiplash. She had to get things back under control.
"Danny, hold on," she said, rising to her feet.
He wasn't listening. He just kept pacing and panting.
"You need to take deep breaths, you're going to pass out."
"Don't you get it, Sam? I don't need to fucking breath! It's just a goddamn reflex at this point! Look, watch, see?" Danny pressed his hands against his chest, and he stopped breathing. Thirty seconds passed. Forty. One minute. Two.
They stood there, facing each other, neither one saying anything. Sam kept waiting for Danny's face to turn red. For him to suddenly gasp and suck in a big breath of air, like she did after holding her breath for too long, but he didn't even twitch.
"Danny," Sam said.
"What?" he snapped harshly. He started moving again, chest heaving, hands shaking.
Sam asked the only thing she could think of that would calm him down. "Where's Orion's Belt?"
Danny blinked at her, hands dropping, and repeated, "What?" It was less bitter this time.
"Orion's Belt." She gestured to the stars, which were now out on full display. "Where is it?"
"Um..." Danny's voice was shaky, but when he turned his head to look at the stars, his eyes looked less wild. "It's just above the trees."
He pointed. "There. The, the three stars."
Sam followed his hand, gaze searching the dark sky, and nodded when she found them.
"You can't see his knees right now. But, um, if you look up, just a little. His shoulder isâ his shoulders are right there. And you can see the lion he's holding." As soon as Danny moved on to the other stars, Sam was lost, unable to see what he saw. But he kept talking, and she wasn't about to stop him. "Um. Jazz. Jazz told me it was a bow, when I was little, because she didn't know the story. Some people think it's a shield. It could be any of them, I guess. But. I like the lion."
He looked calmer. Still far from relaxed, but less like he was about to collapse. Sam approached him slowly, in case he wanted some space, watching for any sign that she should stop. When she saw none, she reached out and pulled Danny into a hug, pressing his head into her shoulder.
"Sam, have I always been dead?" he asked. His voice was steady, and he didn't sob, but Sam could feel his tears staining her shirt.
"I don't know," she answered honestly. Danny still bled, and he healed, and he ate, and he slept. "I don't think that's something we can know until..."
Until everyone else grew old and died and Danny didn't.
They held the embrace until Danny stopped shaking. He sniffed, rubbed his eyes, and pulled back, chuckling when he saw the dark spot on Sam's shirt.
"I swear, if you got snot on this, I'm gonna take the most embarrassing photo I have of you and plaster it all over the school tomorrow," Sam said. She almost meant it, too. This shirt, a dark grey t-shirt covered in bat-shaped lace, was one of her favourites.
The threat managed to pull a stronger laugh out of Danny. It was watery, but bright, and his lips twitched into a smile as he rubbed his eyes again.
"Are you.... are you okay?" Sam asked.
"No," Danny said. "But, I'm not bad either."
They sat back down, hip-to-hip, shoulder-to-shoulder, and looked up at the stars together. Sam squinted, trying to pick out more constellations, but she didn't have Danny's skill for it. Even after him pointing them out to her time and again, she always forgot where they were. Already, she had lost track of Orion's belt. But that was okay. She liked it better when Danny showed them to her.
"Oh, damn," Sam said, suddenly remembering something from freshman year.
"What?"
"I just realized. It's a good thing I don't have a crush on you anymore, you're way too young for me."
"You had a crush on me?" Danny asked, a mischievous grin spreading across his lips.
Sam blushed. "Oh, shut up. You're my best friend, okay? I thought I like liked you."
Danny tipped his head back and laughed. "Would you believe it if I said I had a crush on you to?"
"No way." Sam gaped at him. "Seriously? Tucker and I always joked that you were clueless because you couldn't tell I like you. Was I clueless too?"
"Tucker knew?" Danny's voice rose to a shriek.
Sam burst out laughing. "Oh my god! That was adorable!" She clutched her stomach and fell over onto her side, shoulders shaking. "I can'tÂâ oh my godâ please."
Danny scowled down at her, crossing his arms and pouting. It sent her into a whole new fit of laughter, until her lungs ached, and her flushed cheeks felt too hot. Fanning her face, she pushed herself back up and struggled to get her breathing under control.
"Okay. Okay, I'm done. I swear," she said. A final giggle slipped out.
"Asshole," Danny muttered.
"Asshole that you had a crush on," Sam said. "I can't believe I missed my chance to date the Danny Phantom."
"Damn, and I could have dated Casper High's queen goth. Too bad I don't date older women."
Sam snorted. She looked back up to the stars, feeling a sharp pang in her chest. "Sorry you can't be an astronaut, though."
"Hey, maybe they need a scrawny teenager out in space, you never know," Danny said, grinning wryly. He picked at the grass, sprinkling it over Sam's leggings, just like they used to do when they were kids. With Danny's baby face, he still looked like a kid, but Sam knew he had been through so much more than anyone they ever know.
"But I think... I think I'm okay with that," Danny continued after a moment. "I can fly, and I've even been to space before. Without a helmet! How many people can do that? Besides, I'm years ahead of NASA?"
"Oh, yeah? Why's that?" Sam asked, brushing the grass off her knee.
"I've already perfected suspended animation," Danny answered. He wiggled his eyebrows and knocked his foot against hers.
It took Sam a couple seconds to get what he meant, but when she did, she groaned. "That was so bad."
"It was comedy gold."
"I'm ending this friendship."
"You wish. You're stuck with my forever. Everybody is, apparently."
Sam's expression turned somber. "Danny, I hope you know, we'll always be here for you. Even when we're gone. We might not become ghosts, but we love you. We're with you."
Danny looked away. For a second, Sam thought he was going to have another panic attack. But when he looked back at her, he was smiling. It was soft, and sad. If Sam could only use one word to describe it, it would be resigned. It was the smile of someone who knew what the future held for them and would face it head on, even if they weren't ready for it.
"I know," he said.
Danny was right before, Sam thought. It wasn't okay, but it wasn't bad, either.

Chapter Five
(gay gay homosexual gay)
The days leading up to the wedding werenât much better. Danny was almost always upset, and the only things that made him feel better were reading and cooking, and talking to Vinnie. He liked the kid, he was much smarter than he thought. He just needed a little more education, and he could definitely flourish later in life. But Danny couldnât worry about that right now, not when the wedding was so close. He was getting married, and there was nothing he could do about it.
âUncle, youâve been kinda sad for days! Is somethinâ wrong? I thought you were gettinâ married tomorrow, ainât that a happy thing?â Vinnie asked, the night before the wedding, as he and Danny were eating dinner. Danny paused at the question, not sure how to answer it yet.
âI guess itâs a happy thing. I just⌠I didnât want to be married.â Danny paused, trying to think of a way to explain this to a child. âUm⌠have you heard of Uncle Hamish?â He asked.
âMhm! Heâs the guy who lives in the woods, and no one likes him.â Vinnie responded. âWhat about him?â
âWell..son, do you know why no one likes him? That ainât true by the way, I like him. Heâs a good man.â Danny explained. âI think Iâll bring you to see him sometime.â
âUm..alright, why donât some people like Hamish?â
âBefore you were born, Uncle Hamish fell in love. With another man, like himself. His name is Otis, and they kept their relationship hidden until Grandpa Milton found out. He wasnât happy, nearly killed them both, but they came to an agreement that they could both live as long as they never came back to town. And they didnât.â Danny explained.
âA man can love other men?â Vinnie asked, looking pretty confused. Heâd never heard of the concept before.
âYep. Itâs called homosexuality. And thatâs why I donât wanna get married.â
âYouâre a homosexual?â
âYes, I am. But donât go sayinâ that to other people! Especially Lucy when she moves in, okay? And thatâll be tomorrow. And donât say it to Grandpa Timothy or Grandma Helen either. In fact, just donât tell anyone. Okay? I...I canât risk it.â Danny explained, and Vinnie nodded. They both silently finished their dinners, and soon went to bed. Danny was laying in bed again, the gravity of the situation settling. He was getting married tomorrow.
He was getting married tomorrow.
And no amount of running would get him out of this.
Danny drifted off to sleep soon after, barely able to keep himself together. There was a sudden knock on his bedroom door, and he woke up and quickly looked out the window. It was a little after dawn, surprisingly. He felt like heâd barely slept at all. He got up and saw the person at the door was Vinnie, who looked a little upset.
â..hey, son. What is it, why are you still awake?â
âItâs nothinâ Uncle, I just realized somethinâ! Youâre not marryinâ this lady for love!â He cried, and Danny sighed.
âYouâre right, Vinnie, I ainât.â
âI donât wanna turn out like that too! Forced to marry someone I donât love!â He cried, as Danny bent down and pulled him into a hug.
âYou wonât, okay? Iâm sure that by the time youâre of age, the worldâll be different. And this arranged marriage bullshit will all be behind us.â He explained. He hoped his words would ring true later. He really hoped that.
âIf you say so, Uncle.â
âAnd guess what, kid? Youâre the ring bearer! You get to carry the rings down the aisle for us. Ainât that neat?â He said, and Vinnie nodded.
âYeah, that does sound pretty neat, Uncle.â
âI know! Now, Iâm gonna make a great breakfast, and weâll do the whole weddinâ stuff, and we'll come home and Iâll read to you again? Howâs that sound?â
âGreat, Uncle Danny.â
âYeah, it is-â
There was a knock on the door, which Danny immediately answered. Vinnie, the curious child that he was, listened closely.
âA letter for Daniel Peachy. I was told this is his address?â
âIt is, sir. Whoâs it from?â Danny asked.
âRonald Soto, it says here.â
âOh! Thank you.â
âNo problem, mister.â
Danny had a huge smile on his face, as he closed the door and sighed happily, holding the letter to his chest. He felt his cheeks get warmer as he twirled around, just elated Ron actually wrote back. Vinnie was slightly confused, as Danny sat down and opened the letter.
âWhoâs that? Whoâs Ronald Soto?â
âUm..my lover. Heâs wonderful.â
âOh! That makes sense. Iâll be back out for breakfast!â
âAlright, see you later Vinnie.â
Danny unfolded the letter, slightly anxious as to what it could be. He hoped Ron wouldnât be too mad at him, he hoped he would understand-
Dear Danny,
Itâs very saddening to hear about your marriage. I wish there was something I could do. And frankly, it makes me unbelievably angry that you are being forced into this by your asshole of a father! I would like to be there, so I can give him a piece of my mind! Itâs just frustrating! Because I love you, I should be your husband, and thatâs all that there is to it.
Thank you for the offer of letting me stay with you. I am considering it, and I might take it. Despite your marriage, I trust that you still have somewhere to house me. The local sheriff is onto me, so I might have to run again soon. I think I might just come to Hamish, Alabama.
And Danny! I love you. Donât forget that, dumbass. Never forget that I love you. I canât wait to feel your lips against mine again, and your big hands holding mine. You might be an idiot and all, but I canât stop loving you for being yourself. Donât worry about me, though. Iâll be alright.
Love,
Ron
Danny sighed happily, putting the letter on his room's desk, with the other one. He really hoped Ron would come to him. That would be so nice. He could finally hold the other man in his arms again. Heâd give anything just to lay eyes on him again. He was smiling throughout breakfast, and Vinnie was giving him an odd look.
âUncle, what did the letter say? You look giddy.â
âHe said he might come and stay here for a little bit. The man is always on the run. But Iâd love to see him again!â Danny explained.
âWhy canât you get married to this Ron fellow? You really seem to love him.â Vinnie asked.
âWell, it ainât legal. Unfortunately.â He explained, and Vinnie sighed.
âSo you canât marry the person you love? Never?â
â..no, unless itâs legalized sometime soon. Which it wonât be. Most folks view it as an abomination. Goinâ against God and that..â he explained, a sad look on his face.
â..oh. Well, Iâm sorry, but can we get changed? We should probably get ready for the weddinâ.â
â... right, sorry.â
âItâs okay, Uncle."
Danny and Vinnie went into their rooms, and Danny changed quickly. The frills didnât itch as much as he thought they would, which was definitely a plus. He looked nice. He took his hat off and brushed his hair back. He looked even better now. He was officially finished and left his room to see Vinnie struggling with his tie. He had messed it up significantly, and Danny sighed.
âSon, just, stop. Stop, put your hands up.â Vinnie stopped fiddling with his tie and put his hands above his head. Danny quickly did his tie for him and smiled. âThere! Youâre a handsome young lad, you know?â
âOh, thanks, Uncle⌠Iâm glad you think that.â
âAlright, I think itâs time for us to go.â
âYou look weird without a hat.â
Danny just laughed at that and led Vinnie out of the house. The two of them walked in the side door of the church and saw Dannyâs father, who was talking to Nancy. They seemed to be setting things up for the wedding.
âHi, Grandpa Timothy!â Vinnie cried, and he turned his head, with a scowl.
âHi VincentâŚâ he muttered back, and Nancy sighed. All of this made Danny kind of angry. That was just a child! Why did they hate him so much, he hadnât even done anything to them!
âSo, Daniel! All you need to do is walk behind Lucyâs mother, and stand at the aisle. Since you donât have a Best Man, the Maid of Honor will walk behind you. After that is Helen, and then Vinnie.â Timothy explained. Danny nodded, that made just enough sense to him.
Before he knew it, everyone was in their seats. His mother was crying, and he was walking behind Lucyâs mother. She was a very pretty lady, he couldnât deny that. Alice, the girl from the library, was walking behind him. His parents didnât look very happy about that, but it was too late now. He stood up front, waiting. Dannyâs niece, Helen, was gently throwing petals as Vinnie walked behind her.
Too late to do anything now.

Dad Fluff: Ohana
A followup to this very short drabble about Mina drawing a family photo!Â
CW: Vague references to Dannyâs past torture, but nothing specific. Brief referenced to enforced malnourishment/near starvation.
âYouâre officially obs-⌠obsessing,â Nate says softly, dropping onto the couch next to Danny, leaning over and tilting his head to try and get a better look at his face. âL-Love, talk to me. Youâve been looking at th-th-the picture she drew for⌠longer than can be g-good for you.â
âI wasnât in the picture,â Danny whispers, still holding it in his hands. Looking at the stick-figure attempts to draw Nate and Mina herself and even Toto, a ball of black and brown squiggles with eyes. âI donât know why, why she wouldnât-â
âDanny,â Nate says seriously, taking the paper from his hands and turning it over. âYou are the p-p-picture. Look at you, here.â He points, tapping his finger against the drawing with a soft crackling sound as the paper shifts in his hand. âYouâre so⌠you are s-s-such the center of her life that she didnât have en, enough room to draw you if you didnât have your very own s-side.â
Dannyâs lips press slowly together, and he nods, but he doesnât look convinced. âI never drew myself in, um, in the pictures, either,â He says, finally. âI used to draw Mom and Dad and Ryan on one side, and⌠and, um, then myself over in the corner or on another paper, because thatâs how it felt-⌠sometimes I didnât draw me at allâŚâ
âDanny.â Nate set the drawing down entirely, laying it carefully on the coffee table, taking Dannyâs hands in his. âLook at me, love. Please.â
Dannyâs jaw is locked but trembling as he raises his eyes, slowly, to meet Nateâs.
Theyâre both older, and stronger, and Nate likes to think wiser, but Dannyâs eyes are still the same. Bright sparkling blue, the only time in his life Nate has seen the color blue and called it warm. His freckles have deepened with time, rather than faded, and Nate lifts one hand to cup his face, rubbing a thumb slowly over an old scar on his cheek, feeling the shift in skin texture under his touch.Â
âThis is n-not that family.â Nate keeps his voice gentle but firm, not quite insistent. Danny nods, but heâs scared, and the fear shows through even when he tries to hide it. Heâs never been a good liar, and heâs a worse liar with Nate. âI kn-know we all bring things from our childhoods-⌠but we are not your parents. And Mina is not Ryan, and she isnât y-you, either.â
âIt just felt like-â
âLike you werenât part of us,â Nate says softly, and Danny nods. Nate sighs and slides his hand down Dannyâs neck, over the hints of scarring there, then curves his palm around Dannyâs shoulder, pulling him close. Wavy red hair tickles against the side of his neck as Dannyâs tension collapses. âThis is your family, Danny. We w-worked hard to build it. We⌠we worked so hard to get the fucking ch-chance to build it. This is our f-family. And youâre her whole world.â
âShe drew my scars. She drew them in bright red, theyâre what she sees, itâs all anyone ever sees, is what h-he left on me-â
âSsssshhhhh. I know that was h-hard to see.â Nate closes his eyes, tries to remember what he and Dr. Rosa had talked about when it came to helping Danny through his dark moments, encouraging him to keep talking, to pull himself back. âDid you h-hear what she called them?â
âMy⌠my pretty marks,â Danny whispers, and Nate begins to run his thumb on Dannyâs shoulder through his long-sleeved shirt, thinking of doing this in Alberta, feeling the shift of bones under his thumb when Danny had so little weight at all. Now there is a gentle roundness, strength heâd rebuilt in himself year by year. âShe called them pretty marks.â
âThere. She didnât see them as bad, D-Danny, she just sees them as part of you. The same way she calls that weird thing on your hip your âblue spotâ.â
âIt⌠it is an actual blue spot on my hip, though,â Danny says doubtfully. âI stabbed myself with a marker at the last group home before Mom⌠It is a blue spot.â
âAnd your marks are p-pretty to her.â
âI just⌠it hurts, to see me not in the picture again, Nate.â
âI know. But sheâs n-not you. She didnât d-d-do that because she didnât think you belonged with us, but because she c-c-couldnât fit how important y-you were when the rest of us were in the way.â Nateâs efforts are rewarded with a nearly-silent huff of laughter from the man in his arms. âI know itâs h-hard not to bring it with you⌠I sometimes want to g-go to confession and I havenât b-been Catholic since I was s-s-seventeenâŚâ
âWhatâd you confess to?â Danny asks, curling more against him, and Nate sighs with a kind of relief as he pulls him closer. âJust⌠sucking dick?â
âYes.â
Danny blinks and pulls back, looking up at Nate with surprise. âDid you actually? To a priest?â
Nate grins, and watches Dannyâs internal battle between his need to still be sad over the injury in his mind and the idea of a sixteen-year-old Nate Vandrum talking about blowjobs in the confessional booth. âCouple of t-t-times. Some oth, other stuff, too. I was a really bad C-Catholic.â
âIf you did it and still went to confession, you might actually have been a pretty good one,â Danny says, and the two of them break up into relieved laughter, Dannyâs hands splaying over his face not to hide his scars but just to hide his smile.
âDanny, you are M-Minaâs family. Youâre w-w-with her every day, all day-â
â-Except during Momâs Morning Out, which, I really wish theyâd change the name of that fucking group-â
â⌠let me finish, D-Danny. Mina wants for nothing. She is warm, and fed, and educated, and clothed, and l-l-loved.â
âI was most of those things,â Danny says, softly, but heâs coming back, Nate can tell. Pulling himself out of the spiral inside his mind, starting to feel more present, less like he slipped beneath the surface of a dark pool.Â
âYou were some of th-them all of the t-t-time, but you never had them all, all of the t-t-time. And she does. You were the one who brought up adoption, you are the one who taught her the alphabet, you were the one to d-d-decide we werenât going to watch those episodes I d-d-downloaded of Mister Rogers any longer and weâd let her watch s-s-something made in the last ten years-â
âI still watch them,â Danny says, softly. At Nateâs raised eyebrows, he shrugs. âCall it my confession. Forgive me, Father, for I have watched educational childrenâs programming from the eighties-â
âHey, now. Some of us recovering Catholics like the âForgive me, Fatherâ stuff, but⌠Iâm n-n-not one of them.â
Danny flashes him a bright smile, and Nate feels an absurd sense of victory. He wants to raise his hands in triumph. He settles for pulling Danny in for a kiss.Â
âSorry, Professor,â Danny murmurs against his mouth.
âNow, see, I l-like you calling me ProfessorâŚâ
Danny laughs, softly. âPut your tie and jacket on and Iâll take it right back off you again, Professor Vandrum. But⌠I⌠I get it. She drew me bigger than everyone else because I am important. And she probably thought, since itâs the same paper, that it still counted as being all togetherâŚâ
âKids tend to d-d-draw themselves larger than they really a-are, compared to other people,â Nate says softly. âIf they feel secure, and s-safe. You saw how big M-Mina drew herself.â
âRight. Bigger than you,â Danny says, blinking, looking back down at the paper. âAnd I was the biggest person.â
âI h-hate admitting this, but youâre the one she g-g-goes to first when sheâs scared, or hurt, or has a n-nightmare or feels sick to her stomach. Youâre the one she asks for juice and ah, applesauce. Thatâs all you, Danny. Youâre not part of our family, you are our family. We built every single thing we have because of you. You chose me-â
â-⌠was made for youâŚâ Danny murmurs, and then stops when Nate shakes his head.
âNo, love. You chose me, and didnât l-let go. You chose to say y-yes when I asked. You chose to agree when Minaâs birthmom liked us in our profiles. You chose Toto at the H-Humane Society, you chose every single thing we are. You built your own f-f-family, love, and she canât picture us without seeing you as b-b-bigger than everyone else.â
Danny nods slowly, rubbing at his face, at his eyes, leaning over to rest his elbows on his knees. âYeah⌠yeah, okay.â
âI know this is hard for y-you, love, and always will be, but⌠this is your family. You, and I, and Mina⌠and Toto⌠and, fuck, even your brother.â
Dannyâs smile widens. âWhat do you think heâll say if I send him a photo of what Mina drew and tell him she called them âpretty marksâ?â
Nate shakes his head, leaning over to hold Dannyâs face in one hand again, kissing his forehead, feeling the worry-wrinkles smooth under his mouth. âHeâll say, âitâs ab, about time someone other than Vandrum and I noticed youâre gorgeousâ,â He says, softly.
Danny snorted. âHeâs never called me gorgeous in my life or his.â
âNot to your face.â
Dannyâs smile is infectious, and Nate pulls him in for a kiss knowing the tightrope has been walked, theyâve cleared the worst part of the shadows that threatened to sink their claws in - at least for now.Â
Theyâll have this conversation again, in a hundred different ways, every time something pushes Danny towards the fears and worries built by a lifetime of having to earn the love that should have been his birthright. Theyâll have it every time Danny is reminded or forced to relive years spent desperately trying to earn the mercy of a man hellbent on his slow, inexorable destruction.Â
But they have the foundation. Theyâve laid the path, together. When one of them falters, the other holds the weight, until they can find their own way out. That is their marriage, and has always been, and will always be.
That is Dannyâs family.
âItâs sm-small, and b-b-broken, but we made it ourselves,â Nate murmurs, and Danny lets out a peal of surprised laughter, loud enough that Nate shushes him, worried about waking Mina so soon after sheâs fallen asleep.Â
âDid you just quote Lilo and Stitch at me?â
âNo.â Danny raises an eyebrow, and Nate puts his hands up in surrender. âI quoted it to m-myself!â
âNo, itâs fine, I like that movie, you know I do.â Danny slides arms around his waist, holding him tightly.Â
After a few beats of silence, Danny says softly, âOhana means family, Professor Vandrum.â
âFamily m-means nobody gets left behind.â
