Michelangelo: The Last Decades
In 1534, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) moved to Rome, never to return to his hometown of Florence. Michelangelo: the last decades at the British Museum focuses on the final 30 years of Michelangelo’s life. Although he returned to Rome at the request of Pope Clement VII (1478-1534) to paint a fresco of the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel, it led to new artistic commissions and…

Iniziò a metter mano a quell’ingrato compito diversi mesi dopo…

Ph. by James Ratelet
The painting by Daniele Ricciarelli (Daniele da Volterra, Italian 1509-1566)
David and Goliath 達味與哥肋雅 /牧羊人以石子擊敗巨人 - 以弱擊強 recto of painting by Daniele da Volterra (recto du tableau à double face de Daniele da Volterra)
─ 取材自聖經 Drawn from the Bible 《撒慕爾紀上》 1 Samuel:Chapter 17 (1~58).
And I like verses 31 to 51 the most, they are very classic and I feel excited and honored for them. 📯 🗡️ 👍 Lan~*

I've had a real Teia and Viago on the brain 24/7 time lately. so here's this, all adapted for tumblr's delicate sensibilities and everything, it's just me and daniele da volterra out here still
also shoutout to my grandfather (who I love and who is also one of the funniest people in the world, inherently) for almost giving me a heart attack when he snuck up on me working on the teia profile (thankfully zoomed in on just that) and so earnestly went 'Oh! What a beautiful lady! Though... *tone of genuine concern that I might not have noticed this* something a bit odd about her ears😬'. thank you bestefar for always watching my artistic back that means a lot to me

Ritratto di Michelangelo
Realizzato da Daniele da Volterra
olio su legno
Metropolitan Museum of New York

Made in bronze, this portrait was modelled not long before Michelangelo’s death in 1564 by his follower Daniele da Volterra. It is thought to be the most authentic late portrait of Michelangelo.

Oo, oo, also — mayhaps you know why the clergy was once fine with nudity in the 16th century but then suddenly changed its mind in the 1560s???
Like, the Pope allowed Michelangelo to depict hanging dongs in the Sistine Chapel, only for them to be covered later by Daniele da Volterra?
the way i do not know his name but his nickname IL BRAGHETTONE so now having read the papal encyclical translation from 1563(!!!!)... the timing... is SO funny. the cardinals and bishops who closed the council collectively thought of "all lasciviousness be avoided; in such wise that figures shall not be painted or adorned with a beauty exciting to lust," then went to mass feeling proud of themselves in the sistine chapel and looked up at all the dicks like oh..... no......
but raises interesting shit about iconoclasm (greek) as "destruction" of images versus censorship, and ownership of one's art in a patron culture (il braghettone's gotta eat too)
there's christology as old as the church itself and hagiography to consider about late medieval dualism re: body and soul. do we celebrate the human body as an example of god's creation and love for us, that jesus became "fully god and fully human" by having and suffering in a body? (we're trinitarian here obvs) or is the body weak, an earthly, sinful prison of the soul that longs to return to god (for death)? i obviously dig the first option, and i would think that's probably the theological argument prior to trent.
christ's body is an object of veneration and consumption via the eucharist but i also present to you the holy foreskin, and the "incorruptibility" of saints' bones. it's just so funny for the church that's so obsessed with bodies to be so prude—christ was incarnate (made flesh), the faithful are either the bride or body of christ. horniest people on earth
