O filme é dirigido por Julius Avery, e o elenco conta com Russell Crowe, Franco Nero, Daniel Zovatto, Ralph Ineson, entre outros.

Don’t Breathe (2016)

Don’t Breathe makes good use of its simple premise. It’s a cat-and-mouse story that frequently changes who's on top and who you’re cheering for. There's suspense in droves and a shocking last act that might be too much for some, but I say works.

Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex (Dylan Minnette), and Money (Daniel Zovatto) make their living breaking into houses in Detroit. The job to end all jobs is the home of a blind man (Stephen Lang) which is rumored to hold thousands in cash. Once inside, the thieves discover the blind man isn't nearly as helpless as he seems.

There are really only four characters in the film. On one side, there’s Money, who you don’t like at all, Alex, who you sympathize with a bit (but he’s still a thief so not that much), and Rocky, who is the most likable of the bunch and has a good reason for wanting out of Detroit. On the other, there’s the blind man. By being the one who’ll most likely teach Money a lesson, you like him the most - at least initially. I have mixed emotions about the thieves. In theory, they could be made more sympathetic but maybe your initial ire towards them is intentional. I suspect you’re supposed to rub your hands in anticipation as they find out that this easy mark is anything but.

The two camps are well matched, which is crucial to make you wonder who will come out on top. The blind man is well-prepared to deal with the invaders thanks to his military training and the added adrenaline that comes from catching them trespassing. He knows the layout of the house, which is another advantage, but he’s blind, and there’s only one of him. Other factors complicate the equation, such as the burglars having phones - it means they can communicate without speaking - and a way to bypass the security system. There’s another reason why the police don’t get involved, however. It’s the big reveal that ratchets up the tension more than anything else.

As it turns out, the old man is holding a young woman in his basement for icky purposes. Any conflicting emotions you might’ve had by this time are also gone because Money’s very dead. This twist by director Fede Álvarez, who co-writes with Rodo Sayagues, makes the movie much more simple can it could’ve been. There might’ve been a discussion about how much force is too much force when dealing with home invaders. Instead, the bad guys have made the mistake of wandering into a monster’s lair. Nothing wrong with that choice.

Part of what makes Don't Breathe so tense is the way Fede Álvarez shows us the house, highlighting items that will come into play later. Some of them - like a gun the blind man hides under his bed - are unnecessarily shown ahead of time. Mostly, you see a possible exit, a tool, door, lock, or weapon and go “oh, what does that mean?” At a critical point, it’ll come up again for a nice, satisfying payoff. Don’t Breathe explores many fears. Its one location evokes claustrophobia, several scenes prove why we should be afraid of the dark, and there’s a particularly intense scene with Rocky in the basement. Like the blind man says: “There is nothing a man cannot do once he accepts the fact that there is no God.” That's a chilling thought.

Don’t Breathe is a muscly home invasion thriller/horror that sort of works as a straightforward adaptation, and an inventive reversal. Stephen Lang is terrific in the film, its lean story is memorable, and the consistent levels of stress/unnerve make it fun - even when it gets shockingly intense. I have no idea how they’re going to follow it up with a sequel but I’m excited. (September 18, 2021)

Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex (Dylan Minnette) and Money (Daniel Zovatto) are three thieves in Detroit who break into homes secured by Alex’s father’s security company and making money by selling the items they take. However, Money finds out that an Army veteran (Stephen Lang) living in a house in an abandoned neighbourhood has $300,000 in cash in his home, which he won through settlement when a young woman killed his daughter in a car accident. The three are hoping that this will be their last robbery and walk away with a massive fortune. What makes this break-in easier for the trio? The Army veteran has the security system installed by Alex’s father’s company and that he is blind. At this stage, you’re thinking “no way, you cannot do that to a blind Army veteran, where’s your respect?” But I am happy to share with you that as an Army veteran and blindness combined – not to forget his ruthless, protective dog, he is a weapon within himself and the three are in for a rude shock. Was the trio’s mission easy and successful as what they were lead to believe in the first place? I will tell you this much, the Army veteran did not make it easy for the three thieves to take his money and run. A very intense movie to watch and it is added to my unique list. Great story, acting and horror / thriller movie. Looking forward to more movies written and directed by Fede Alvarez with the help of his co-writer Rodo Sayagues.
