Akris - A Century in Fashion
Selbstverständlich
Edited by Peter Kriemler, Albert Kriemler,  With photographs by Iwan Baan,    With contributions by Daniel Binswanger, Jessica Iredale, John Neumeier, Nicole Phelps, Anne Urbauer, Nicole Urbschat, Roland Wäspe
Lars Müller Publishers, Zürich 2022, 320 pages, 265 illustrations,  22 × 30 cm, paperback, English, ISBN  978-3-03778-707-6
euro 85,00
«Selbstverständlich» is the German expression which, in the mind of Albert Kriemler, best encapsulates the aesthetic ideal that he wishes to accomplish with his fashion designs. For the creative director at Akris, the embodiment of natural modernity is «selbstverständlich» – evident in the wearer and the use and functionality of the clothes.
Taking the collections as waymarks, Akris – A Century in Fashion encompasses the house’s hundred-year history: its humble beginnings as an apron atelier, its ascent into the world of high fashion and its rootedness in St. Gallen, center of a once booming Swiss textile industry. Contributions from different authors, among them fashion writer Jessica Iredale, explore the history, uniqueness and forward-looking nature of the house. Photo essays by Iwan Baan illustrate its hometown and inside world. Choreographer John Neumeier and artist Thomas Ruff discuss their creative collaborations with the designer.

Another exhausting month, with a new puppy added into the mix.
Total: Five novels (including two audiobooks), one story collection, and one short story.
My favourite: Keraunani, because I enjoy the marriage-of-convenience trope, especially in the hands of a storyteller I trust.
I’d also recommend: Radar Girls and “If the Fates Allow”.
I probably wouldn’t recommend: Cinderella Must Die.
Cover thoughts: The Last Garden in England and Radar Girls both caught my eye when I was scrolling through the library catalogue. In both cases, it was the combination of the cover and the title.
Titles, authors, genres and ratings listed below, with links to my reviews on LibraryThing.
The Last Garden in England by Julia Kelly (narrated by Shiromi Arserio, Marisa Calin, Danielle Cohen, Katherine Littrell, Siobhan Waring). Historical fiction, set on an English estate in the early 1900s, the 1940s and the present day. 3½☆
Good Neighbors: The Full Collection by Stephanie Burgis. Two short stories and two novellas. Romantic fantasy. 3☆
Keraunani by Rachel Neumeier. Part of the Tuyo series, set concurrently to Tarashana. Romantic fantasy. 3½☆
Cinderella Must Die by W.R. Gingell. Fairytale retelling. 2½☆
Radar Girls by Sara Ackerman. Historical, set on Hawaii during WWII. 3½☆
Romancing Mister Bridgerton by Julia Quinn. Historical romance.
“If the Fates Allow” by Rainbow Rowell. Short story about a minor character from Fangirl, set at Christmas during the pandemic. 3½☆

On the one side, this film shows a slice of this relentless diversity of a place rarely visited by tourists - and on the other, it is an exploration of all the different lenses, viewpoints and expectations one can apply in a travel film about a mysterious country riddled with stereotypes.

For this film, I teamed up with my friends Maximilian Neumeier and Tim Höddinghaus. The 3 of us went on a total of 4 trips, each spanning over roughly 10 days, which brought us to 6 distinct locations in 3 different seasons: Moscow in spring, Kamchatka in fall, St. Petersburg, Murmansk, Salekhard and Lake Baikal in Winter. This project could have never been realised without the help of the production company 27km, our local guides Andrey Manirko, Vadim Makhorov and the countless other people who helped on-location in Russia and in postproduction back in Germany. If for some reason you’ve never seen it, you need to watch this! Reborn as RoboCop he is programmed to serve and protect the citizens of Detroit and eliminate the rampant crime in the city streets so that a massive city-wide reconstruction project can get under way.
Seit 25 Jahren dabei: Wolfgang Krehl

This catalog was prepared to accompany the exhibition at the Hamburger Kunsthalle in 2009. Nijinsky, famous as a dancer for the Ballets Russes, was also a prolific artist. This publication was timed to appear on the 100th anniversary of the first performance of the Ballets Russes in May 1909. More than 100 works on paper by Nijinsky were assembled for this exhibition, and were shown in context with other abstract artists of the period: Sonia Delaunay, Kupka, Alexandra Exter,  Léopold Survage   etc.

I realised that this has been sitting in my drafts, ready to post, for ages.
Reread: From All False Doctrine by Alice Degan.
Total: nine novels (including one reread), one novella and one short story collection.
Cover thoughts: These are all effective covers (even Yours Cheerfully, which uses a shade of pink I detest). Of Absence, Darkness is my favourite.
Did not finish: The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix and The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.
Still reading: Love in the Blitz: The Greatest Lost Love Letters of the Second World War by Eileen Alexander.
Next up: Winterkeep by Kristin Cashore.
My full reviews are on Dreamwidth and LibraryThing.
-
Death’s Lady trilogy by Rachel Neumeier: Portal world fantasy, set 16 years after The Year’s Midnight.
Of Absence, Darkness: When an enemy summons Tenai back to her own world, the spell also brings her friend Daniel and his daughter Jenna. I liked seeing the portal-fantasy-experience from the perspective of a middle-aged father! This story quietly simmers with tension until suddenly it boils over. 3½ ★
Of Shadows, a Light: Arguably the second half of Of Absence, Darkness, except Jenna becomes a POV character. I like that her adventures allow her to meet a greater variety of people, and give her a wider understanding of this world. This was very gripping, with the right sort of ending for this sort of story. I want to reread the whole trilogy now. 3½ ★
-
The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water by Zen Cho: Fantasy novella.
Tet Sang is part of a group of bandits who run into trouble after a nun from the Order of the Pure Moon insists on joining them and uncovers the truth of their mission. This was definitely intriguing. Occasionally amusing. A well-constructed story. 3 ★
-
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah: Historical fiction set in Nazi-occupied France.
After a chapter and a half, I wasn’t sure about the writing style and was rather relieved when reviews gave justification for not reading further! Even if the ending is good, I didn’t feel like reading that many pages of so-so prose and melodrama just to get there.
-
Chaos on CatNet by Naomi Kritzer: YA science-fiction. Sequel to Catfishing on CatNet.
As a near-future story about social media apps and AIs, this was tense and really interesting! But there’s not room for a lot of depth to the relationships. It’s a successful story without that, but nevertheless, my personal preference is for more depth. 3 ★
-
The Book of Firsts by Karan K. Anders (aka  Andrea K. Höst): A high school girl, a trio of beautiful boys and a series of secret lunchtime trysts.
While I love Höst’s fantasy, I was not planning on reading this. Read it on an impulse. Am still surprised how it made me care about the characters. This is, in spite of the setting and the sex, such a Höst story. She’s still writing about characters who are exceptionally intelligent, talented and attractive! It’s just that none of them have magic. 3½ ★
-
Fletchers End (1962) by D. E. Stevenson: Romantic fiction. Sequel to Bel Lamington.
Less focused and not quite as delightful as Bel Lamington, but I still liked it. It revolves around the newly-married Bel’s efforts to discover the history of Fletchers End, the house she and her husband have bought, and the romantic prospects of her friend Louise. 3 ★
-
Between Decisions by W. R. Gingell: Australian YA urban fantasy murder mystery. Set in Hobart. Eighth in The City Between series, set after Between Cases.
There’s a problem with some sirens and social media, and meanwhile the story builds, somewhat deceptively and very effectively, to a dramatic development. It could be a disappointing turn of events -- for the characters, it’s devastating -- but I was surprised by how satisfying it was to see the aftermath taken seriously.  3½ ★
-
Shadows of the Past by Sharon Shinn: Short story collection. A magic school, a haunted house, an alien soulmate, randomly appearing objects, phone calls from ghosts, a healer in hiding, and wintermoon wishes. The first three are murder mysteries. The next three are about  dealing with bereavement. All but the first two include romance. These are decent stories. Only one I didn’t really like (the third one). But my favourite was something I had already read -- “Wintermoon Wish”. It’s still lovely. 3 ★
-
You Have a Match by Emma Lord: YA, a bit like The Parent Trap for the Instagram generation.
After Abby’s DNA ancestry test reveals she has an older sister, she signs up for the same summer camp so they can get to know each other and try to find answers -- why was Savvy given up for adoption and kept a secret from her siblings? This is a compelling mystery, and also an entertaining and optimistic novel that keeps all the balls it’s juggling in the air.  3½ ★
-
The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix: Fantasy.
A fabulous title but the worldbuilding doesn’t strongly appeal to me. Based on the little I’ve read, and on my experiences with Nix’s other books, I suspect this would be a book I would like but not love. Unfinished.
-
Yours Cheerfully by A J Pearce: Historical, set in London in 1941. Sequel to Dear Mrs Bird.
The government has requested that magazines promote women’s war work, so Emmy writes a series of articles about a munitions factory and befriends a group of women who are trying to juggle work and motherhood. This isn’t a coming-of-age story like Dear Mrs Bird was -- Emmy’s learning about other women’s personal circumstances and workplace dilemmas. But these things are still compelling.  3½ ★

Eleonora Abbagnato,Teatro Massimo di Palermo @ Marco Glaviano
There are many, many Italian dancers scattered around companies throughout the world. Some are in the corps de ballet, others are principal dancers, but all continue the tradition that made Italian dancers some of the most famous of all. Even leaving the men aside, we have Pierina Legnani (noted as ‘maybe’ being the first to perform 32 fouetté turns) who was a prima ballerina assoluta at the Mariinsky; Giuseppina Bozzacchi who created the role of Coppélia for the Paris Opera Ballet when she was 16; Fanny Cerrito and Carlotta Grisi (together with Marie Taglioni – herself half Italian – and Lucile Grahn) who created the roles in Perrot’s Pas de Quatre in London; Virginia Zucchi (for whom Petipa created La Esmeralda pas de six), Carlotta Zambelli (the star of the Paris Opera Ballet for three decades), and more recent exports: Fracci, Ferri, Galeazzi, Durante, Savignano, Abbagnato and others who have become principal ballerinas with major international companies.

It is Paris Opera Ballet’s Eleonora Abbagnato (also director of the Rome Opera Ballet company) who heads the bill of Daniele Cipriani’s latest starry gala, this time for the 62nd edition of the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, a town which has seen many of the world’s most famous dancers pass through over the last half-century.
The programme, curated by Cipriani, ranges from the great classical repertoire to pieces by important contemporary choreographers, as well as original creations by young Italian dance makers.
Joining Abbagnato in the line-up are Davide Dato, from Biella, who since 2016 has been First Soloist with the Vienna State Ballet (who will dance in George Balanchine’s Tarantella, which the company has in its repertoire); Gabriele Frola, from Aosta, who became principal dancer of the National Ballet of Canada and, at the same time, of the English National Ballet in 2018; and Rachele Buriassi, a soloist at Boston Ballet.

There is also 18-year-old Davide Riccardo, from Messina, who graduated from the School of American Ballet and, since August 2018, has become the first Italian at the New York City Ballet (and will present Jerome Robbins’s Andantino as a tribute to the NYCB choreographer who also had strong links with Spoleto); as well as six Italian dancers from the Stuttgart Ballet: Fabio Adorisio, Daniele Silingardi, Alessandro Giaquinto, Matteo Miccini, Vittoria Girelli and Elisa Ghisalberti.
Coincidentally, the gala – on Sunday 30 June – coincides exactly with the tenth anniversary of the death of Pina Bausch, and Damiano Ottavio Bigi, who dances with the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch in Germany, will present his own creation dedicated to the great choreographer and interpreter.
Contemporary choreographers are represented by Claudio Cangialosi, from the Vlaanderen Opera Ballet, who will dance a piece by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and Sasha Riva and Simone Repele, formerly at John Neumeier´s Hamburg Ballet and now at the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, will perform a work by Marco Goecke.

There are also national premieres by young Italian authors whose talent has been acknowledged abroad: Alessandro Giaquinto and Fabio Adorisio, of the Stuttgart Ballet, present two creations, especially for the Spoleto Festival, danced by the six Italian dancers from the same company. Tommaso Beneventi from the Royal Swedish Ballet will dance with Buriassi (together with Giacomo Castellana of the Rome Opera Ballet) in a world premiere by Francesco Ventriglia on the music of Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre.
Among the (non-Italian) guest artists who complete the lineup are Nikisha Fogo and Liudmila Konovalova from the Vienna State Opera who will dance the Le Corsaire pas de deux along with the young dancer from La Scala, Mattia Semperboni, who set the stage alight in Milan recently as the slave. There’s also Friedmann Vogel from Stuttgart, Megan LeCrone from the New York City Ballet, Katja Khaniukova from English National Ballet and Nancy Osbaldeston from the Royal Ballet of Flanders.
Not only is there a fancy lineup – and quite unique – but the gala will be performed in the Piazza del Duomo with the stage backdrop being Spoleto’s stunning cathedral.

Dance in Italy – Spoleto Festival’s Dance Gala with Abbagnato, Vogel, Frola, Dato and many more on 30 June There are many, many Italian dancers scattered around companies throughout the world. Some are in the corps de ballet, others are principal dancers, but all continue the tradition that made Italian dancers some of the most famous of all.

In Russia - в России from Vincent Urban on Vimeo.
A landmass so vast it’s hard to wrap your head around, spanning over 11 timezones and 2 continents, filled with otherworldly landscapes, countless discrete cultures and crowded cities with rather turbulent histories.

It has been a very long journey and we are forever grateful.
