As Race 3, despite the negative buzz and reviews, romps home past Rs 100 crore in 3 days flat in India alone, and Salman Khan gets his 13th consecutive member of the club as leading man (plus two more—Son Of Sardaar and Judwaa 2 in cameos!) and is touted as a Mega-Star, let us look back at his career.

Of those 12 films, Dabangg, Ready, Bodyguard (all home productions), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (which he co-produced), Ek Tha Tiger, Kick, Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai were super-hits, while Jai Ho! broke even, Tubelight did not get back investment and Dabangg 2 and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo were hits. All these films released in the 2010 and afterwards phase.

Net result: A smash record indeed in nine years.

But Salman Khan started out in 1988 with a second lead in the average Biwi Ho To Aisi, getting his first solo lead in Maine Pyar Kiya, released in December 1989. And while he gave eight blockbusters 22 to 30 years into his career, he did give huge hits in the earlier phase as well.

Here, then, is the list of 12 Salman Khan blockbusters in the first 21 years:

1. Maine Pyar Kiya-Biggest hit of the entire 1980s.

2. Saajan-Biggest hit of 1991.

3. Hum Aapke Hain Koun!…-Biggest hit of 1994.

4. Karan Arjun-The second biggest hit of 1995. When the film released, Salman Khan had a huge head-start in popularity over co-star Shah Rukh Khan, who had had super-hits only in Baazigar and Darr as anti-hero.

5. Judwaa-This David Dhawan film that had Salman Khan’s first dual role ranked then respectably among the top 10 films of the year, but over the decades, it has outclassed most of the the bigger hits of that year to become a high-recall cult entertainer. So much so that David Dhawan, the director, actually remade it with son Varun Dhawan for a 2017 audience. The updated film, Judwaa 2, also was a hit and had a cameo by the ‘two’ Salman Khans in the post-climax!

6. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai-The biggest hit of 1998 was essentially a Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol musical, but Salman Khan, in a long special appearance, walked away with a lot of sympathy for his character, who loves but loses Kajol.

7. Biwi No. 1-The top hit of 1999 saw Salman Khan in the central role as the philandering husband. Though the film was very melodramatic and kitschy, he pulled it off, supported by Karisma Kapur and Sushmita Sen, with Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khanand Tabu in “parallel” roles.

8. Hum Saath Saath Hain-A typically Rajshri production not only in content but its thrifty production, this was the second biggest hit of that year with its ensemble cast. Like any multi-star Dharmendra film, it was essentially top-lined by Salman! It ranked next only to Biwi No. 1 that year.

9. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam-The most celebrated romance of 1999 completed the triad that made Salman rule that year with all its top three hits, a feat that had only one precedent-Amitabh Bachchan with Muqaddar Ka Sikander, Don and Trishul in 1978! It made, in the pre-100 crore days, Rs. 52 crore on a Rs. 16 crore budget!

10. Mujhse Shaadi Karogi-Also starring Akshay Kumar, this 2004 film earned over Rs 55 crore for a Rs. 19 crore budget. This was the third hit Salman got with David Dhawan, with whom he has worked the most in his long career.

11. No Entry-The biggest hit of 2005 remains another cult comedy and has another distinction: it is the only film with an adult theme that appeals even to children with its “universal”, earthy and uproarious humour!

12. Partner-Salman Khan’s 2007 home production was among the top five hits of that year. It is loved to this day.

Same phase blockbusters

Let us now look at blockbusters from the other market leaders in the same phase (1988-2009), though Shah Rukh Khan started out only in 1992,  Aamir Khan had Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Dil, Rangeela, Raja Hindustani, Ishq, Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini and 3 Idiots. Four more films—Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai, Rang De Basanti and Fanaa— romp in only if worldwide collections are included and not their India performance, which did not match up.

Shah Rukh Khan had Baazigar, Darr, Karan Arjun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Om Shanti Om and Chak De! India. Again Pardes, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… and Veer-Zaara come in only if and when worldwide collections are included.

So, Salman Khan has had 12 blockbusters in India alone, while Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan had 8 each, with 4 and 3 more films added only because of NRI appreciation.

In the post Rs. 100 crore era, Aamir Khan has added PK and Dangal to his blockbuster list, whereas Dhoom 3, also, comes in only with its faring at the international box-office. Similarly, Shah Rukh Khan has added My Name Is Khan, Chennai Express and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi only because of their worldwide box-office.

In conclusion, given Salman Khan’s consistently better and more luminous box-office record (as per facts and figures supported by the trade) throughtout the last three decades, we wonder why he is considered a mega-star only now?

According to a report on Box Office India, the Remo D’Souza film collected an estimated Rs 16-17 crore on Sunday. This takes its total to around Rs 40.47 crore. The first weekend collections of the film were, however, lesser than the three-day collections of Varun’s last film, Kalank. It had collected Rs 43 crore in its first weekend. The report states Panga collected an estimated Rs 5.50 crore on its first Sunday which takes its total weekend collection to Rs 13.81 crore. The film had opened below expectations at Rs 2.70 crore but showed improvement due to positive word of mouth.Tanhaji continues to hold fort at the box office with extraordinary collections of around Rs 12 crore nett on Sunday. The film now stands at a total of Rs 224.15 crore. It has collected around Rs 26.90 crore in its third weekend, which is reportedly the fourth highest ever after Bahubali - The Conclusion, Dangal and PK. Talking about how Tanhaji could affect the two new releases, film exhibitor Akshay Rathi had told Hindustan Times, “Tanhaji is obviously a factor as it’s doing extremely well and was even declared tax-free in Maharashtra. A huge chunk of its business is coming from the state and can definitely impact the two films. Guests Pests------------------------- When I heard about sex predators on the prowl on new year's eve evening, I felt only admiration for the no-nonsense Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte. Because he is the only one in the world who knows how to deal with sex offenders and hardcore criminals. He once threw a rapist-murderer from a helicopter! So I ask you, why only 'entertain' such serious offenders as 'guests' in our state-run 'guest-houses' otherwise called jails? Why not do more for them? Why not also arrange air travel to entertain them? So they can enjoy traveling by air -- from a flying helicopter to the ground below! *** Mumbai is now toying with the idea of introducing air ambulances to operate within the city. Great idea! Unlike conventional ambulances, an air ambulance won't get stuck in heavy traffic. Nor will it jolt the heck out of the poor patient or crack his bones every time it hits a pothole at speed! *** A Mumbai tabloid recently did an expose on jail officials seeking bribes to facilitate prisoners. So, the question is, how do we punish these errant prison officials? Put them in prison? Hey, they are prison officials so they are already in prison! *** 5 Indian states will go to the polls next month. And after the polls? Will there be any change? I doubt it. All states will remain in the same 5 states as before -- in a backward state, in a poor state, in an unhappy state, in a state of distress and a state of despair! *** Exercise BMC fashion--------------------------------------- Mumbai's municipal corporation found an unauthorized gym on Arjun Kapoor's terrace. So what did the BMC chaps do? They exercised! No, they did not exercise in that gym. They exercised their powers to pull down that unauthorized gym set up by the actor. *** Happy Wrestling, Folks--------------------------------------- Dangal is a film about a wrestling family. And I hear this film is scoring impressively at the box-office. You know why this film about wrestlers is doing so well? Because today we can all relate to this film. Because right now we all feel like wrestlers here in India -- wrestling with the demons unleashed by the humongous demonetization mess! *** Public Servant Or Slave Driver?------------------------------------------------- A chief minister was caught recently on camera with a flunky tying his shoe lace! So what's new? Meet the typical Indian politico. During elections, our politicos come to us begging for votes on bent knees. But once in high office, the same politico feels it's below his dignity to bend and tie his own shoe lace! So what's new? During elections, our politicos promise to serve us as public servants. But once in power, they expect the public to serve him as his personal servant and bonded slave! *** The Indian Santa------------------------------- Santa is a fat guy who comes with a sack of gifts. In India, it's a little different. A fat guy promises lots of gifts, comes with a sack -- only to fill it with public funds and take it away for himself. This fat guy is our Indian politico disguised as Santa! *** Dying For The Heroine----------------------------------- Such irony. The man who sang 'wake me up before you go go' was go go gone without waking up! They say it was his heroine addiction that finally finished George Michael. Well, you know, a film could be made on his life of great romance. A romance in which our hero (George Michael) is shown making the ultimate sacrifice and dying for his heroine -- er, I mean heroin! *** All Title And No Doctor?----------------------------------------- The prestigious Hyderabad university just conferred an honorary doctorate on SRK. I say he deserves it. You know who else deserves the title of doctor in our showbiz? Certain film makers. You know why? When I see their films, I am convinced these 'doctors' have discovered the perfect cure for insomnia. Ahhhhhhhhh . . . YAWN! *** Breaking The Age Barrier------------------------------------------- Happy birthday to Salman Khan. Hey, he is 51 and he still looks 21! OK, make that 25 -- no, 31. Govinda is 54 but still looks 24 -- or at least 34. SRK is 55 but still looks -- what? -- 25 or at least 35! Dharmendra-ji is 80 and yet looks half his age! But, oh wow, the ageless wonder of them all, Anil Kapoor is 60 but still looks 16! OK, OK, make that 26! Or 36. Happy now? But you know what this all means? It means it's a momentous breaking-news moment -- our Bollywood stars have discovered the elixir of life, the fountain of youth, the magic potion to stay young forever! And they are keeping it a secret! I ask you, how selfish can they get? *** Littering Danger!------------------------------- A plane skidded off the runway at Goa airport. Oh my God, why? Well, that's no mystery. It skidded on a banana skin -- a casually tossed-away banana peel that had somehow ended up on the runway! The real mystery is, why no one at the airport, no one in the air traffic control tower noticed the banana skin lying on the runway? OK, maybe they did and they did intend to remove the banana peel. But then, hey, it was a slippery banana peel so it must have slipped their mind! ***   Such are the levels of pollution in China, I hear their bullet trains are turning brown! And such is the mental pollution of a few politicos here, the other day a minister uttered something to this effect -- 'bad girls wear short skirts to tempt the boys'! *** After all these years, a new organ has been discovered in the human body! It has been named the mesentery. I say forget the mesentery. When I hear of 36 billion being wasted on useless statues while poor children starve in rural parts and financially-distressed farmers commit suicide -- I think we should do something about re-discovering that vital organ in our heads called the brain! *** And someone is Hyderabad was found growing ganja in his flower-pots. Brilliant! Give him the Nobel for discovering that even the humble flower-pots in our balcony can yield pots of money! ***

Om Raut directorial ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ which stars Ajay Devgn, Kajol and Saif Ali Khan in leading roles seems to be unstoppable at the box office. The film has been inching towards the Rs 275 crore milestone in the domestic circuit and creating several box office records at the same time as well.

According to the latest Box Office India report, ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ has become the second highest-earning film in Maharashtra after Prabhas starrer ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’. The period drama has gone on to earn Rs 141 crore approximately till now and is expected to continue with its successful run.

Ajay’s ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ has beaten Aamir Khan‘s ‘Dangal’ at the box office by nearly Rs 37 crore. While ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ (Rs 185.76 crore) is way too ahead of the Om Raut directorial but the film has surely managed to surpass the collections of Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and other stars films collection in Maharashtra.
