Web of Lies by Sally Rigby (Detective Sebastian Clifford #1)
My Review (5*): It can be tricky to write a meaningful review when you’re really tired and I beg your pardon if this one will sound silly or a bit like “the writer of this post is dog tired and she’s writing and sleeping at the same time” Any issue with this post is not caused by the book because I had a lot of fun reading it and I can’t wait to read new stories featuring Sebastian and Birdie. I loved them, the aristocratic second son turned detective and the sharp and frustrated police officer. Even if they have a different story and social background they work well together and their banters are very entertaining. The story is well developed and kept me reading till late in the night. There are plenty of twists and turn, a solid mystery that kept me guessing. The character developments is good and I liked the humour and how the story works. To summarize: a thoroughly enjoyable story, gripping and entertaining. It is strongly recommended. Many thanks to Sally Rigby and Damppebbles Blog Tours for this digital copy, all opinions are mine
Book Description: A trail of secrets. A dangerous discovery. A deadly turn.
Police officer Sebastian Clifford never planned on becoming a private investigator. But when a scandal leads to the disbandment of his London based special squad, he finds himself out of a job. That is, until his cousin calls on him to investigate her husband’s high-profile death, and prove that it wasn’t a suicide. Clifford’s reluctant to get involved, but the more he digs, the more evidence he finds. With his ability to remember everything he's ever seen, he's the perfect person to untangle the layers of deceit. He meets Detective Constable Bird, an underutilised detective at Market Harborough’s police force, who refuses to give him access to the records he’s requested unless he allows her to help with the investigation. Clifford isn't thrilled. The last time he worked as part of a team it ended his career. But with time running out, Clifford is out of options. Together they must wade through the web of lies in the hope that they’ll find the truth before it kills them.

Favorite read
I think my favorite read was either Knightmare Arcanist or Killian’s Dead. Both were fairly entertaining, and both have inspired me to keep reading their respective series. Knightmare Arcanist was an entertaining and unexpected new fantasy read for me, and I’m excited to have the second book thanks to Kindle Unlimited. Killian’s Dead is a short story prequel to May Day by Josie Jaffrey, and having received physical copies of both I am so glad these are my major summer reads!

Goals Accomplished
Maintain My Streak
Well book bees, I’m now on a 109 day streak! I’ve managed to get at least one blog post out a day for some time now, and it’s kind of exciting!
Transition from D&D series to Kindle Unlimited
I kind of did this? It turns out the Kindle Unlimited series as I imagined it wasn’t as easy to write as I’d hoped, so I haven’t officially made it a definite weekly post. I’ve been writing the occasional post when inspired, but that’s about it.
Start transitioning to StoryGraph
This one has definitely stalled. For a little while, I was trying to update my StoryGraph daily and keep it in the forefront, but I lost interest in doing this at some point when making sure the books recorded for my reading challenge were accurate. I understand that the beta features mean it’ll be a bit more difficult to navigate for a time, but I’m patient enough to wait for StoryGraph to improve before moving to using it more often.
Read something outside my comfort zone
Goal accomplished! This one for sure got conquered as I read a science fiction novella–Emergency Skin–as well as a wonderful Middle Grade book for a damppebbles book tour!
Sign up for another readathon
This one I didn’t quite accomplish; I kept putting off looking up readathons until it was really too late. But I’m thinking about maybe doing one in late August to make up for it!
Final Thoughts
All in all, this month has been a pretty decent one. I did quite a bit with the blog just by posting every single day, and I’m proud of where this blog is going. With regular activity and posts, I’m seeing more consistent engagement and I feel more confident putting out more and more posts. I think sometimes I can use a break, such as what I did yesterday where I just let my scheduled post go up and didn’t worry too much about doing anything else. But I’m happy with the content I’ve put out this month!

A Beautiful Breed of Evil by Andy Maslen (DI Stella Cole Thriller #5)
My Review (4,5*) When I started to read this book, I thought it was going to be a “traditional” crime thriller with an international setting. A DI looking for a killer and her archenemy looking to bring her down. I was wrong because Stella is something more and it’s an unexpected kind of characters. Stella is a woman with a “mission”, strong willed and resilient, able to overcome sufferance and to find a new life. I loved her and I think she’s a fleshed out and well thought characters. This is the second book I read by this author, the first in this series, and I already knew he is a talented storyteller and delivers interesting plot and characters. The plot is tightly knitted, fast paced and once you start you cannot stop as you are turning pages as fast as you can. The story involves past and present, an international setting, love, hate, revenge, plenty of action and a reason for the first murder that it is unexpected, but it also reflects something that happened in European history and that I never heard before (I checked on Wikipedia and discovered something new). I found this story gripping, highly entertaining and emotionally charged. There’s a mystery to be solved but there’s also plenty of emotions, of people that are being affected by what is happening and strong feelings. Roisin, Stella’s archenemy, is not a likable character but she is also a driven and ambition woman, and we learn about her feelings even if most of them are negative. Jamie, Stella’s partner, is the positive counterpart, I loved him because he’s still human and he’s able to feel. Something in this book reminded me of grimdark fantasy: most of the characters are morally grey. They are on the right side but somehow, they live according to a moral code that is not shared by the rest of the world. A page turner I strongly recommend. I want to read the rest of the series because I was fascinated by Stella and want to learn what happened before. Many thanks to Damppebbles blog tours, Emma Watson and Andy Maslen for the digital copy of this book, all opinions are mine
Book Description: He’ll never speak of the evil they did…
A former Swedish ambassador lies dead in his swanky Mayfair flat. With his tongue torn out and placed on a Bible. Competing theories swirl. A religious maniac? A psychopath? The truth is far darker than either. DCI Stella Cole’s search for the killer takes her to Sweden. There, she discovers a horrific chapter in the country’s history that throws the case into turmoil. And then more people start dying. Teaming up with Swedish cops Oskar Norgrim and Johanna Carlsson, Stella pieces together Ambassador Brömly’s shocking past. And discovers the killer’s motive. Meanwhile, Stella's personal life is about to take a significant turn as her boyfriend, Jamie, suggests a change in their relationship. But as Stella tries to process what it means, she makes a fateful decision.
Why won't the dead stay buried?
On the other side of the Atlantic, a kid practising BMX stunts over water finds a skeleton on a lake bed. When the victim is revealed to be a British cop, the FBI ask for assistance. Stella’s arch-enemy from her own department gets the case. She flies to Chicago and soon discovers the murderer’s identity. The scene is set for a showdown in Sweden as DI Roisin Griffin pursues her vendetta against Stella all the way to the north of Sweden during the annual festival of Midsommar.
A Beautiful Breed of Evil is the fifth book in this series of hard-hitting crime thrillers. Much of the action takes place in Sweden, home to fictional detectives Martin Beck, Kurt Wallander, Harry Hole and Saga Norén. Even as Stella is fighting to bring the killer to justice, shadowy figures from her past are planning to silence her before she can expose their brutal methods.
