I love long, meadow-y grass so I don't mow my lawn. (Except the strip by the sidewalk, which is part of the public right-of-way.)

Today I discovered a ground nesting bird (a dark eyed junco) has built a nest on my yard, hidden by the long grass! Several little eggs in it.

#birds #dark eyed junco #even leaving a small portion of your yard unmowed will increase biodiversity #in the spring the early insects shelter in the long grass #in the summer the grass lays flat sheltering its roots and keeping them damp #in the fall the seeds develop on unmown grass #which the little birds eat #in the winter the old vegetation shelters plants and creatures from the cold #and the older vegetation biodegrades and renews the soil

sometimes you just have to take a seat and touch grass with your most beloveds

My next door neighbors are on an incline from me and run their sprinkler system enough that it's eroding part of my yard into my driveway

Meanwhile I have not turned my sprinkler system on since moving in and my grass is genuinely just as green as theirs

As a child there were some very important steps in s’more making:

1: go out into the woods with all the other kids and find The Perfect S’more StickTM before anyone else

2: run back to the campfire to have granpa whittle the ends of all the sticks while he tells stories

3: line up in front of whichever Dad is in charge of the marshmallows and procure a marshmallow

4: shove the marshmallow on the pointy stick and hold it close enough to the flame to lightly melt it but not burn it

5: SET THE SHIT ALIGHT BY SHOVING IT INTO THE CENTER OF THE FIRE

6: bring your blackened marshmallow to whoever has the crackers and chocolate and hurry hurry it’s cooling off and it won’t melt the chocolate!!!!

7: cram the entire thing in your mouth as fast as you can, covering your hands with chocolate and melted marshmallow and crumbs and ash and giggle with everyone else because s’mores are so messy!! We get to be messy while we eat!!! And we won’t get in trouble!!!!

8: repeat steps 3-7 until it’s been determined that you have, in fact, had enough sugar and should go play now
