I love long, meadow-y grass so I don't mow my lawn. (Except the strip by the sidewalk, which is part of the public right-of-way.)
Today I discovered a ground nesting bird (a dark eyed junco) has built a nest on my yard, hidden by the long grass! Several little eggs in it.
#birds#dark eyed junco#even leaving a small portion of your yard unmowed will increase biodiversity#in the spring the early insects shelter in the long grass#in the summer the grass lays flat sheltering its roots and keeping them damp#in the fall the seeds develop on unmown grass#which the little birds eat#in the winter the old vegetation shelters plants and creatures from the cold#and the older vegetation biodegrades and renews the soil

sometimes you just have to take a seat and touch grass with your most beloveds
#while crying in public and noticing that theyre tearing up with you#the grass is damp but it doesnt matter bc the pastries are soft and sweet and it all feels safe if only for a bit#and then you get joke married outside a closed museum after buying stickers and pins while a loud band plays songs you dont know#i like to believe that friendship is some type of home and I really do hope i don't lose anyone else#im trying so please i hope i dont make people push me away anymore#anyway#on the funny side. the amount of people asking if im actually married. uncanny unparalleled unexpected#didnt think it would be relevant yet i started getting dms from people who havent spoken to me in years asking abt it#im not but thanks for confirming that everyone loves/cant resist a bit of gossip. including myself

My next door neighbors are on an incline from me and run their sprinkler system enough that it's eroding part of my yard into my driveway
Meanwhile I have not turned my sprinkler system on since moving in and my grass is genuinely just as green as theirs
#only part of my yard is getting their runoff#so it's not like I'm benefiting from their sprinklers either#lawn culture#sprinkler systems are dumb tbh#I legit think I need to buy flood bags for the boundary lines#lawn#yard#gardening#I technically have way more grass in my yard than they do#because they have a circle driveway#and now part of the driveway is constantly damp and growing moss#which is fine except now it is actually slippery#a friend nearly fell the last time she came over#like what even

it rained for the first time in weeks. whenever i wake up to gray skies i get this wave of relief wash over me
