PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Agency and Gallery Research
Webber
A company which has really inspired me to want to get into the agency and gallery industry is Webber which combines the two. It is a prime example of a company which has combined industries to create a dynamic and unique company, something myself and Alex aspire to do together. I came across Webber last year while helping Kalpesh Lathigra at his opening night in the Webber Gallery Space. So after seeing the Gallery first hand I was really intrigued to understand more about the company and to learn what makes it so unique and to help me understand and learn about how they disseminate themselves to different audiences.
The Agency Webber Represents is a creative agency based in London and New York, which does not only represent photographers but stylists, set designers and art directors which automatically allows the company to be seen from a large variety of audiences. The Agency are passionate about maintaining a balance between art and commercial projects and prides itself in nurturing and supporting their artists to achieve distinct body of works. I think this idea of nurturing and caring really allows me to realise the importance of providing a service and creating a relationship with your client something Webber has really taught me that to be a successful agency you really need to be able to provide a supportive service to your artists. Webber represents has made me aware about the importance to choose who you are representing and the genre you want to represent, this will allow your company to be different and its something myself and Alex need to find out which direction and genre in photography our agency is going to represent.
On the Webber Represents Website (http://www.webberrepresents.com) I was really interested to see how much information they put on about each artist and what type of information they provide, this will help me when I come to creating mine and Alex’s website and see understand how much information and what information to provide about our artists. On the website there are different pages with the different categories the agency represents, in particular, on the photographer’s section you can scroll down and see the mass amount of photographers they represent, you can see an image from the photographers work and their name, which you can then click on and see more information about the photographer.
Webber Represents the photographers, Thomas Albdorf, Damien & Leila De Blinkk, Thomas Brown, Mark Pechmezian, Ventia Deaden, Steve Harries, Gregory Halpern, Marton Perlaki, Jo Metson Scott, Maciek Pozoga, Jan Lehner, Chris Rhodes, Thomas Prior, Grey White, Geordie Wood, Daneil Shea and Magdalena Wosinki. You are provided with information about the artist’s work, their background, awards and exhibitions, a link to the photographer’s website and then a portfolio of images which you can navigate across each of the photographs and projects. From each of the artists profiles you can really understand the photographer and the type of work they do, the website is really selling them to you. The background of the website is white allowing the photographs to stand out and almost become apart of an online exhibition, playing with the relationship between the agency and the gallery. This teaches me the importance to think about the layout of our website and what each section communicates to our audience.
Now that I have really understood the agency and how they present themselves online I was really interested to learn more about the Webber Gallery, and to see how it combines with the agency but also how they use the gallery in interesting ways drawing in different audiences. The Gallery space is dedicated to supporting personal work of both represented artists as well as other connected artists. I think that this is a really important aspect as they are reaching beyond the realms of the agency and connecting with other artists, proving a unique platform to a wide range of practitioners. The Gallery does not only hold exhibitions but they have a programme of talks and book launches exploring contemporary photographic themes. Which allows them to bring in a wider audience than simply for exhibitions I also think there concentrating on contemporary themes allows them to maintain their relevance with in the wider industry. This shows me the importance of keeping up to date with the current photographic industry and thinking of dynamic ways to use the gallery space beyond an exhibition.
When doing my research on Webber, I came across a charity auction which both the agency and gallery space launched to raise money for refugee support Europe. Webber auctioned16 pieces of work donated by 16 photographers who are represented by Webber. I have been really inspired by this unique way of using the company to go beyond the realms of the photography industry using the company’s success to raise money for a good cause. This really shows the importance to be bold and diverse in the way you can use your company to make yourself stand out and be valued, to do something to benefit others beyond the company and the industry.
I think that Webber has created a good relationship between both the agency and the gallery, really making me think about ways myself and Alex can merge our curation and agency. Something which stood out for me was that Webber represents has one Instagram account which covers both the agency and the gallery, I think this is a really good way to keep the relationship between the two and for there audiences to recognise the company for both. They use the Instagram to keep their social media audience up to date with the goings on at Webber, for print sales and promotion of exhibitions and to provide their audience with a wide range of photographic work from across both the agency and the gallery. They are allowing their audience to develop with them and really keep on top on the company. As myself and Alex are really interested in combining an agency with a Gallery and are going to build a website to framework our company idea, I was really interested to see how Webber describe themselves on their website. On there website in their contact section they have a short description of about the agency and who they are, before talking about the founder Chantal Webber and providing information about how Webber came about. On this page there is no information about the gallery space, you find this about in the gallery space section which then provides you with a bit of information and the space and what it is used for. It was really interesting to see that they have kept them separate, I think it does work separate as the agency and gallery are two different things, but it has really made me think about what information myself and Alex want to put on our information page.
Webber also uses twitter as another online platform to engage and build their audience, using twitter to retweet articles and interviews their artists have been apart of really promoting their artists. Something I think is really encouraging as twitter provides another platform to promote their artists and build their audience. They are allowing their audience to keep up to date with the artists they represent a tool myself and Alex really need to think about and use to keep promoting ourselves and our artists.
