You Don't Get to Call Yourself Family (Tim Drake is a Fenton)

part 1 , part 2

It starts with another of Dick’s attempts to be Tim’s Big Brother™.

It’s well-meaning, of course. They’re mid-patrol, crouched on a rooftop, when Dick gently brings it up.

“You know, Tim, we could be family if you’d just let us.”

Tim freezes for a moment, his grip tightening on his grappling gun. But then he exhales, forces himself to focus, and mutters: “I told you. You’re coworkers. That’s it.”

But Dick doesn’t drop it. And when they return to the Cave, the rest of the Batfamily piles on—each in their own way.

Jason: “C’mon, Replacement. Admit it. We’re at least kinda family.”

Damian, sneering: “He’s too much of a coward to acknowledge it.”

Bruce, quiet but insistent: “Tim, this is your home. We are your family.”

And Tim—who’s been holding this in for years—finally snaps.

“Family?!” Tim’s voice echoes through the Cave, sharp and brittle like glass about to shatter. “You think you’re my family?!”

Everyone goes still.

Tim takes a step forward, fury radiating off him in waves. “Let me ask you something—what kind of family depends on a thirteen-year-old to pull their grieving father out of the abyss because no one else could be bothered? What kind of family calls him Replacement and then beats him bloody because he’s not good enough?!”

Jason flinches, but Tim doesn’t stop.

“What kind of family tries to kill him multiple times and laughs it off like it’s a fucking joke?” His eyes land on Damian, who looks like he wants to argue but doesn’t. “And what kind of family stands by and watches it happen and does nothing?!”

The silence is deafening.

Tim’s breath hitches, and he rakes a hand through his hair. “If you’re family, then why—why the hell did you all hurt me so much?”

No one can look him in the eye. Not even Bruce.

Tim’s voice drops, tired and cracked. “I can’t call you family. Because if I did, I’d have to accept that my family treated me like shit. And I already have one family, that loves me—I don’t need another one that makes me feel like I’m nothing.”

He turns on his heel, heading for the exit. “You’re my coworkers. That’s all you’ll ever be, and honestly? It's more than you deserve.”

And then he’s gone.

Later, Jazz calls him.

“You okay, Timmers?” she asks gently, voice soft in that way only Jazz can manage.

Tim sighs, rubbing his eyes. “Yeah. I just… lost it at them. Finally told them off.”

Jazz hums thoughtfully. “Good. They needed to hear it.”

Tim doesn’t respond right away, staring at the faint glow of the Batcomputer across the Cave. “Do you think I was too harsh?”

Jazz doesn’t hesitate. “No. You set a boundary. They’ve been pushing it for years. Let them sit with it for a while.”

Tim doesn’t know if he believes her, but he nods anyway. “Thanks, Jazz.”

“Always,” she replies. “Now come home for dinner. Mom’s trying a new ectoplasm casserole recipe, and Danny is threatening to ‘accidentally’ destroy the kitchen again.”

He laughs, already grabbing his things. “Be there in ten.”

Good Dad™ Bruce headcanons (part 1) :

(because we deserve it and need to heal)

Cass and Bruce connect a lot through shared meditation sessions. Just silently and calmly existing with each other.

Bruce often unwinds by playing the piano alone in the Wayne Manor music room. One evening, Steph heard him and joined in with a guitar she found there. Bruce didn't mind. Since then, whenever he starts playing, Steph often grabs an instrument, turning his solo sessions into lively jam sessions.

Bruce has a habit of calling Dick under the guise of needing his advice on a case. Once they’ve discussed the "urgent" matter, Bruce smoothly transitions to the real conversation to get updates on what's been going on in Dick's life :

"What happened with that noisy neighbor of yours ?"/"Did you find those jeans you were looking for ?"/"How was your date ?"/"How's the shoulder ?"/"Did you get the plumbing issue fixed ?"

Every time Bruce can spend time with Damian, he would introduce him to different strategy board games from around the world. They'd play chess, of course, but they would also play Go, Checkers, Mancala, Backgammon, Mahjong, Barjees, etc.

When they're confronting a bigger threat than usual, Bruce would make sure to leave tiny personalized notes in their utility belts. For Dick, he'd just shove it in his hand while walking past him :

To Dick : "Trust your instincts. You've got this. – Bruce"

To Jason : "Remember your training. I'm proud of you. – Bruce"

To Tim : "Your mind is your greatest weapon. Stay sharp. – Bruce"

To Damian : [in arabic] "You are stronger than you know. Stay focused. – Your father"

To Steph : "Believe in yourself as I believe in you. – Bruce"

To Cass : "Your skills are unmatched. Stay confident. – Bruce"

To Duke : "Your determination inspires us all. Keep it up. – Bruce"

When he was 13, Jason mentioned once how much he liked banana-flavored protein bars. Since then, Bruce always made sure to have some in the batcave. He never stopped, even when Jason was no longer around. It was a small but meaningful way for Bruce to keep a piece of Jason's memory alive. When Jason eventually returned, he was stunned to find the familiar protein bars still stocked, knowing no one else liked them that much.

Duke is a cinephile, so in his free time he loves watching movies. Bruce sneaked next to him in the manor's home cinema once. Since then, they created this unspoken tradition of watching classic movies together whenever their free time coincides.

To show his support after Tim’s coming out, Bruce discreetly hung small bisexual pride flags in multiple places : one in the Batcave, right next to the monitors where Tim often worked, one in the Batmobile on the rear mirror, one placed next to the family picture in Bruce’s room, and one on the training room's wall. It showed Bruce's acceptance and support in a way that blended seamlessly into their everyday life. It made Tim feel seen and valued.

"Colin Bridgerton is ruined! The show made him so unlikeable" or some negative 🐂💩 about poor Colin. NO!

I can totally understand (and agree) that Season 3 is a mess and the lack of happy Polin that I never get the chance to feel giddy about.

But Colin is not "ruined". He's the same sensitive, caring and soft boi everyone knows and loves. It's just that he feels useless, unworthy and inferior. When he finds out Penelope Featherington is Lady Whistledown, he is heartbroken because he thinks "that's not the Pen I know. Who duh heo is she!?" He also feels intimidated that she's better than him, so he believes Penelope deserves someone better than this loser. But he still wants to marry and stay with her because he loves her so much and he and Pen have the connection that only they understand; he just needs to accept that she's LW, she's still the same person he loves - just more successful, heh - and that she loves him for who he is, not what he can provide.

But what I can absolutely declare with certainty is that Colin Bridgerton is a Drama Queen™. Look at this pissy, pouty, jelly Drama Queen™ sleeping on a chaise sofa because he subconsciously just wants to be near Pen, even though he's angry with her.

Ultimately, Colin Bridgerton is not ruined or changed significantly from the book or past seasons. He's a soft boi and The Drama Queen™. He's somewhat like that in the book, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, too. But is more tempamental and demanding than pissy and in a teen girl phase, heh. To be honest, I prefer show!Colin than book!Colin. So I don't wanna see any more Colin (or Luke Newton) slander! 😤 Rant over.

Things that I personally like to believe about Tim Drake because of maybe projection.

He listens to IDKhow because their songs are the sort of villainous vibe he slightly exudes whenever he's slightly desperate for survival, mental décline due to situational horrors, or just general unhinged feralness.

He either has no concept about gender norms and so he dresses in many ways (drag, fem-presenting, masc-presenting, the likes and the other yk) or he does but gives no ducks and instead dresses however he wants cause he deserves it.

He is queer, like not any specific sexuality except for his bisexuality but he is also queer in the gender department ( be it genderfluid, agender or nonbinary, trans, any of these are great in my book, kinda want more genderfluid Tim fics tbh)

His parents actually took him on their trips after the whole circus The-Flying-Graysons-death which is very traumatic for an adult so of course those two did not let go of him until one time when he was nine and figured out the Batclan identities and have, infact begged of them to stay so he can have easier access to Gotham news

His fav Robin in general is Dick, his fav Robin who operated during his stay in Gotham was Jason cause of the Robin Magic™ and cause of his cheery and loving nature towards Gotham of which he shared, no I will not go back on this

Animals love him and any time a villain has animals in their plans, after they're defeated the animals let him pet them, or any general animal in his vicinity tbh; this includes but not limited to: Dex-Starr, Teekl, those mutated big cats that Catman from BTAS had that now live with him in the Monarch Theater,,, general dangerous animals tbh I want him to have the vibes of a villain who owns dangerous beasts but they're honest to god are just pampered pets who are given anything they want

Him and Damian actually do get along when it comes to the same goal and being general menaces and annoyances, they both realize that if they enable each other they will in fact somehow take over the world and that is too much of an annoyance and time filling schedule that their hyperfixation would have not been in and that could not be allowed

He can cook decently well but doesn't be it due to exhaustion, pain, laziness, or cause his fav person offered him food and he loves them so ofc he's accept, the YJ team both current and retired are those who he majorly cooks for, as well as Damian if they're together, sometimes when Bernard is tired he'd cook for him

The reason Bernard cooks most of the time is cause of mutual love between them, like Bernard adores both cooking for Tim and the loving gaze Tim gives him whenever he cooks for him; Tim on the other hand adores Bernard whenever he cooks something cause he'd do the tiniest specific things like sticking his tongue out when plating, tapping his feet in a rythm or his fingers on the cooking utensils that are nearest to him, he finds it charming the way his shoulders would bop as if he's listening to a catchy tune,, many lovey feelings on both sides really.

He looks the most as his mother, his grandmother (Janet's side) than his dad, but sometimes when he looks loving his face turns in a way that is a lovely mix of Jack's and Janet's loving smiles that they used to give each other and most importantly, Tim

Whenever his birthday rolled around and his parents would be unable to come back to Gotham, they would buy him pillows, blankets, and stuffed extinct animals that they'd cuddle for a while and warm so he'd at least get a tiny bit of their unofficial-official 'Drake-Birthday-Cuddlepile!' that they did ever since his fourth birthday after Haley's Circus.

He has abandonment issues thanks to his parents unintentional negligence alongside many emotional and mental issues despite them loving him to hell and back, they're bad parents in the 'physically present' department but they didn't physically lay a hand on Tim cause they were trying to break generatonal abuse and trauma cycles but have infact didn't cause they emotionally abused him and they didn't realize cause their abuse was physical and they thought there was a difference. No Janet and Jack, abuse is abuse even if emotional y'all really fucked up a child.

Mrs.Mac was this random lady they found on their trips that babysat Tim one (1) time, and then hired her and took her with cause tiny Tim adored her and they thought she was fun cause she kept up with their archeology facts especially the medical sort of archeology

Besides, knowing the person's intentions or guessing emotions doesn't mean knowing how to talk through it or how to handle these emotions or how relationships between people 'should' or 'should not' work.

Not mentioning her problems with reading&writing and thinking she would learn ASL immediately (and MAYBE she would, in some stories, IDK, but I saw only one fic that actually discussed why ASL would be as difficult for her as other languages)

I remember Jason/Clayface thing with Hush and I accept this canon but all I see at the Titans Tower fight is beating. I'm not even sure Jason wrote the note in blood, because guys, have you ever tried to write big letters with BLOOD? I DID. It's so fcking inconvenient. and takes too much time! and oh my god, even if Jason DID write it in Tim's blood, why slitting his throat? do you have any idea how ridiculously difficult the whole thing is? I think people just kinda confuse Tim-Jason situation at the Titans Tower and Tim-Jason situation with Hush. Because. Slitting throat thing. And they often forget about that Jason/Clayface thing with Hush. I forget it too, sometimes.

Lazarus Pit Madness as a form of mind control or something that excuses everything Jason did. And turning him to a different character.

Impulsive Jason Todd who has no control at all. like with the white streak - I mark it as a Fanon thing despite it being in comics. not because previous reasons but because. because retcon. fuck off. I mean, as Robin he could be, sometimes. But all Robins were like that sometimes. And they all still were professionals. Well. Can vigilantes be professional????? I don't think so but who knows.

Duke Thomas having half-existence. - would it hurt to actually choose if Duke exists in your story or not? he's an amazing character and it's better not to write him at all if he's a ghost here, my guy.

Weird Tim who worships Jason while getting beat up by him. Did you see how Tim's all sassy while fighting? NOT a deer with big eyes at all. ROBIN. He's Robin!

Not acknowledging what Damian al Ghul or Damian Wayne has been through. I get it, you like Tim and Damian's acting hostile makes you hostile towards him but— seriously?

Woobifying any character while completely changing personality. Dick, Tim and Jason are suffering the most from it. Damian is there sometimes too.

"Jason doesn't try to kill Bruce anymore". He never tried to kill Bruce except this one time in Lost Days where he decided not to do it after all.

Not acknowledging Jason Todd being a hypocrite.

guys do you remember Jason's dead eyes in Lost Days. literally the last glimpse of life in him was when he found out that Joker was alive. It's sad.

"And who's this little stray creeping around?" purrs a voice from behind him, and Damian barely manages to restrain his yelp, quickly turning and shoving the screwdriver behind him. The costume declares quickly that it's not a guard, but his voice still cracks when he says, "Catwoman?"

She winks behind her mask, overconfident and proud of it, and his hands feel sweaty on the handle of his screwdriver. He feels distinctly underprepared for his heist now, when comparison has shown up so obviously, but-

“I’m not here to get in the way,” he says, tilting his chin up. “Whatever you're here to steal, I don't care. But you're not allowed to call the alarm on me freeing these bengals, either.”

She doesn't blink at him, but it seems like a near thing; her posture straightens just barely from her languid sprawl, and he shifts one foot behind him so she won't get both if she decides to use her whip to trip him up. “And why would a little thing like you want to cause that much chaos?” she asks, and he bristles.

“I know your intent is always to humiliate your victims,” he retorts, and he wishes he had the teeth of the cats behind him, to bare at her and snarl. “But none of these animals deserve to be mistreated just because you're more interested in a grudge. Go steal whatever you're here for and leave me alone.”

“Kitten,” says Catwoman, a hint of a smile curling her lip. “I’m here to steal those cats.”

so u have dick, whos dami's favorite brother obv and jason who is his partner in crime, but tim??? tim is his safe place, and he's always trying to impress tim and wants tim to be proud of him!! he loves the headpats and squishes from his cheek when he manages to spend time with tim (he wont ever say it outloud tho)

tim is just weirded out by how his little brother came to begrudgingly seek him out but who cares! he has an excuse to pinch those chubby cheeks and can give him headpats this kid deserves!!

and when damian gets hit by cuddle pollen shit hits the fan, cos obviously they'll think that he'd go to dick first cos he was the favorite. but instead he goes to tim and latches onto him and doesnt let him go, he acts like a clingy brat for once and whines and cries when someone tries to take him away from tim.

tim is overwhelmed by the sheer cuteness becos who knew damian was such a cute brat?? i mean come on the only emotions he shows are murder, haughty, and bruce™

he takes advantage of this and has a separate folder that is filled with new blackmail material--

awww damian who managed to get attatched to tim as someone who won't hurt him and feeling a kind of safety with him because dick, jason, and bruce are all pretty heavy hitters and while he recongizes it or not they're also the biggest bodily threats to damian! but tim- tim is also a threat but it's his mind that's the biggest obstacle and so long as there is peace between them then damian can find refuge and safety, plus tim is always more sympathetic to damian's cause. he's lived through bruce, dick, and jason ordering him around, being bossy, and acting like they know better.

when damian comes to him complaining of the same tim is sympathetic to his plight and struggle. he sympathizes and so damian is more at ease with him, more willing to let his tongue slip of his true thoughts.

NGL I do love pre 2011 batfam all having such different internal motivation around killing (and if they agree it's never OK, the why it is not OK is different for people).

Like Bruce has rules that he tries to follow. these are for many reasons, some to keep himself in check, some because if the entire point of Batman is that no other family is torn apart him killing people is literally defeating that point, it reads as generally ideology based. and I think that Bruce's character traits in the 70s or 80s where even if he doesn't kill people he isn't super distraught if they die is kind of interesting and it's a shame the writers dropped it. tho IG it could also be character development. (should note: he also has accidentally killed people but doesn't blame himself for it in some 80s comics like son of the demon)

Cass's rhetoric is based on her compassion and perfectionism and just. it's wrong period. no one deserves to die, and since she always has to be perfect, she always has to be able to save everyone even people who are trying to kill her. i feel like even if there was a case where someone had to kill someone else in self defense, cass would never view that as acceptable for herself because she should always be able to solve everything perfectly.

babs is sometimes vocally anti-killing people but i think it's fucking fascinating that she is also shown as being willing to potentially kill someone pretty often (at least pre new 52 when they removed 95 percent of her personality). not wanting to be faced with the prospect of being a victim again, she lures thinker into a trap with the intention of killing him. even after she's gotten more solid footing, she still is willing to kill to protect other people (she starts getting ready to snipe black mask when she thinks he will kill someone who was working for her in no man's land, before helena as batman shows up) and she is willing to authorize huntress to use lethal force to protect tim.

and tim's rhetoric for not killing people is very 'becuase bruce said so'. no seriously like (link) his rhetoric for a lot of what he does as robin is based on following The Rules ™. who made the rules? Bruce. and if he breaks the rules he feels unworthy. it would've been cool if the writers had acknowledged this way they wrote him so he could develop his own moral code, but I'm not sure they did in what I read. generally bruce was right because he's batman, so tim following bruce's rules for the most part is tim being right. no need to think of it further

dick is very anti-murder in ntt because heroes don't do that ™ and he seems less so in later comics. like he beats himself up a ton for nearly beating the joker to death but in later nightwing issues he's fine with people getting hit by ricochet when they are shooting at him and it is unclear if he maybe causes this guy to get hit by lightning, which kills him (but he had to do it to save a baby). i guess like with tomasi's run on nightwing and late new earth continuity, he just seems in general unconcerned with the whole debate and like. he doesn't use lethal force b/c that's not what you do, but he also doesn't let himself get too concerned about it, and when he was in NTT it was very much just. those are the rules (like tim)

damian's rhetoric starts out opposite from everyone's because killing your enemies is just what you do. like not even out of malice if writers are keeping anything consistent from the original LoS/LoA goal it should be to save people/the world. and he evolves from there. post R:SoB, fter his character arc, he seems to be one of the more anti-killing members of the batfam, probably behind cass, and a lot of it is based in the belief in people to change and his own feeling of guilt and empathizing with the people they fight because! Why was I any different from them? (he does not accept that he was a kid as a reason for why he should be held less responsible). and it's not just a case of 'not killing people b/c they are like me' he often tries to get them to reform. cass does this too.

and you have helena who is portrayed in batfam comics as like. having a super high body count but its fucking hilarious if you read her solo b/c she really doesn't. and she does kill 2 people in her solo, a lot of the time it seems to be based on even if they are a bad person and by her rhetoric they deserve to die, how she is feeling when it is going down. like she was going to rescue one of the guys responsible for killing her parents before he said something indicating he was intending on using her or something that triggered her (I can't remember the exact dialogue) which like what an IDIOT. and she also killed a serial killer, but i believe she felt personally responsible for the serial killer since she had inadvertently provided him with the means to escape from prison and failed to stop him before. i feel like even if she goes in a situation thinking "I am definitely going to kill this guy" she does not always do it, and frequently she can lean to leniency barring external circumstances. but she doesn't consider herself as someone who considers killing automatically wrong, even though there isn't a ton of things different from her situation than from dick or babs's, both of whom who have either been ready to kill people or been unconcerned if people they were fighting died or both.

and then obviously you have jason who is very pro-murder (i'm only going w/ pre flashpoint continuity b/c that's the one i've read more of), who does not care if people who aren't 100% deserving to die by his standards are killed by him (he kills drug dealers w/o giving them a chance to follow his rules to intimidate people or b/c he has no need of them after consolidating his power, he poisons people he can't control who he is poisoning in prison, causing many people to die -- both of these written by winick, generally regarded as the 'good' pre FP jason writer), because he is acting from a place of trauma and pain but believes that if he can control crime correctly he can 'fix' things -- but his reasoning is very based on his own personal experiences and not in compassion for others, or at least the people he allegedly is helping are very abstract and not real for him. and like. it's an interesting character trait because LOTS of batfam members' motives aren't really even tied into compassion when talking about not killing (dick's aren't, tim's aren't, babs's aren't), and some also have their personal experiences highly motivating them (babs, cass, damian).

i realize that steph is not on here but she is also like. really changing based on the writer (so do the others, but her evolution felt harder to track). i feel like pre batgirl-ing, she definitely feels some people deserve to die and might kill someone in anger if they reminded her of her dad and no one stopped her. batgirling, her writing is different, the writer wants to portray her as a little 'softer', more based on hope, but the writer does not actually show us how she changed, which is frustrating.

love of my life!!!! he deserves so much love so here i am, ready to provide.  these are my headcanons and i will admit NO hate towards them. also if you have any headcanon of your own for jason then comment because i might like it and add it to mines.

i’ve always headcanoned jason todd as italian american, although i can see him as latino too (i just don’t like the negative connotations that follow because he’s usuallt headcanoned as latino because anger)

definitely not because of harmful stereotypes but because i can see jason’s grandparents being part of that italian population that migrated to usa to follow the american dream and ended up living the american nightmare.

not the godfather-like with the mafia, but with italians barely surviving in the misery of america (which feats jason’s backstory).

also i headcanon his grandmother as a great cook and comfort-person to him.

jason learned to cook thanks to his grandmother and alfred, but his best dish is a lasagna recipe he learned from his grandmother.

this is my subtle way of telling you jason is a great cook. that’s canon, though. 

he doesn’t think too much about his sexual orientation a lot. jason doesn’t want to tie himself to an etiquette, that would bother him.

jason has had a polyamorus relationship with kori and roy. it was pretty healthy, tbh, but it’s over now.

he doesn’t really ‘do dating’. occasionally, one night stands are alright, but jason isn’t really into those either. he’s sure that whenever he meets someone that is meant to be and falls in love, he’ll handle it well.

he won’t because he self-sabotages and doesn’t leet people in, but if it’s really really meant to be he will eventually overcome it.

curses a lot. probably also in front of kids, and gets nervous when the kids repeat those words.

however, jason actually is very good with kids. he’s the babysitter of his shitty neighborhood, and kids love him.

jason doesn’t drink alcohol like ever. he has seen (bc of his parents) what addiction looks like and feels like and he prefers to leave himself out of it.

my most hated character:Endeavour. I’m also not fond of Todoroki’s mom but she had some understandable reasons. (I’ve heard some things changed, but I’ll keep this opinion until I actually read the stuff)

my OTP: Don’t really have one. I like some possibilities of ships but the characters would need to grow A LOT before any romance could happen. Among the Adults I’ve found InkoxAll Might to be cute and fluffy as hell (I don’t know if canon has brought up anything about Izuku’s dad so…I like it, at worse it’ll just be the crackest of all pairing) and Present MicxEraser Head. I also generally don’t like how the fandom portrays the characters. I’ve been in a lot of fandoms where people remembered 2 things about each characters and then proceeded to bash/deify them based on those but the BnHA fandom is in a category of its own (which is part of why I left it). It kind of made me swear off shipping anything in the story.

my NOTP: Don’t really have any that I can remember.

favorite episode: I didn’t watch the anime , but I really liked the chapters where Bakugou and Midoriya freaking finally talked. Partly because it freaking aknowledged PTSD but also because Bakugou’s character is heavily linked to how society completely brainwashes and messes up with the mind of priviledged people. The point is not to pity them so much as understand that privilege is messed up on every surface and even those who benefit from it on a surface level end up suffering too because it messe up how they view the world. Todoroki showed it up bit but he was mostly a victim from others. Bakugou’s main enemy is himself.and how, at 15 he’s nowhere near emotionally mature enough to deal with this as well as the PTSD that goes with being a hero. In a way he reminds me of Damian Wayne except he doesn’t have the Tragic Backstory ™ that makes all of this easier to understand. He’s still an asshole though. I just find this part of his and Izuku’s relationship very interesting to study.

But the one I do ship very very very far down the road when it’s not actually problematic anymore (or shouldn’t be if the character development keeps on a good track) would probably be BakuDeku, but as I said, I ship it very far down the road probably won’t happen before their 30′s-40′s type of down the road.
