• Fu-Go Balloon Bomb
A Fu-Go, or fire balloon (風船爆弾, fūsen bakudan, lit. "balloon bomb"), was a weapon launched by Japan during World War II.
The fūsen bakudan campaign was the most earnest of the attacks. The concept was the brainchild of the Imperial Japanese Army's Ninth Army's Number Nine Research Laboratory, under Major General Sueyoshi Kusaba, with work performed by Technical Major Teiji Takada and his colleagues. The balloons were intended to make use of a strong current of winter air that the Japanese had discovered flowing at high altitude and speed over their country, which later became known as the jet stream. The jet stream reported by Wasaburo Oishi blew at altitudes above 30,000 ft (9.1 km) and could carry a large balloon across the Pacific in three days, over a distance of more than 5,000 miles (8,000 km). Such balloons could carry incendiary and high-explosive bombs to the United States and drop them there to kill people, destroy buildings, and start forest fires. The preparations were lengthy because the technological problems were acute. A hydrogen balloon expands when warmed by the sunlight, and rises; then it contracts when cooled at night, and descends. The engineers devised a control system driven by an altimeter to discard ballast. When the balloon descended below 30,000 ft (9.1 km), it electrically fired a charge to cut loose sandbags. The sandbags were carried on a cast-aluminium four-spoked wheel and discarded two at a time to keep the wheel balanced. Similarly, when the balloon rose above about 38,000 feet (12 km), the altimeter activated a valve to vent hydrogen. The hydrogen was also vented if the balloon's pressure reached a critical level.
The control system ran the balloon through three days of flight. By that time, it was likely over the U.S., and its ballast was expended. The final flash of gunpowder released the bombs, also carried on the wheel, and lit a 64 feet (20 meters) long fuse that hung from the balloon's equator. After 84 minutes, the fuse fired a flash bomb that destroyed the balloon. The balloon had to carry about 1,001 pounds (454 kg) of gear. At first the balloons were made of conventional rubberized silk, but improved envelopes had less leakage. An order went out for ten thousand balloons made of "washi", a paper derived from mulberry bushes that was impermeable and very tough. It was only available in squares about the size of a road map, so it was glued together in three or four laminations using edible konnyaku (devil's tongue) paste – though hungry workers stealing the paste for food created some problems. Many workers were nimble-fingered teenaged school girls.
The bombs most commonly carried by the balloons were, Type 92 33-pound (15 kg) high-explosive bomb consisting of 9.5 pounds (4.3 kg) picric acid or TNT surrounded by 26 steel rings within a steel casing 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter and 14.5 inches (37 cm) long and welded to a 11-inch (28 cm) tail fin assembly. Type 97 26-pound (12 kg) thermite incendiary bomb using the Type 92 bomb casing and fin assembly containing 11 ounces (310 g) of gunpowder and three 3.3-pound (1.5 kg) magnesium containers of thermite. 11-pound (5.0 kg) thermite incendiary bomb consisting of a 3.75-inch (9.5 cm) steel tube 15.75 inches (40.0 cm) long containing thermite with an ignition charge of magnesium, potassium nitrate and barium peroxide.
A balloon launch organization of three battalions was formed. The first battalion included headquarters and three squadrons totaling 1,500 men in Ibaraki Prefecture with nine launch stations at Ōtsu. The second battalion of 700 men in three squadrons operated six launch stations at Ichinomiya, Chiba; and the third battalion of 600 men in two squadrons operated six launch stations at Nakoso in Fukushima Prefecture. The Ōtsu site included hydrogen gas generating facilities, but the 2nd and 3rd battalion launch sites used hydrogen manufactured elsewhere. The best time to launch was just after the passing of a high-pressure front, and wind conditions were most suitable for several hours prior to the onshore breezes at sunrise. The combined launch capacity of all three battalions was about 200 balloons per day. Initial tests took place in September 1944 and proved satisfactory; however, before preparations were complete, United States Army Air Forces B-29 Superfortress planes began bombing the Japanese home islands. The attacks were somewhat ineffectual at first but still fueled the desire for revenge sparked by the Doolittle Raid. The first balloon was released on November 3rd, 1944. The Japanese chose to launch the campaign in November; because the period of maximum jet stream velocity is November through March. This limited the chance of the incendiary bombs causing forest fires, as that time of year produces the maximum North American Pacific coastal precipitation, and forests were generally snow-covered or too damp to catch fire easily. On November 4th, 1944, a United States Navy patrol craft discovered one of the first radiosonde balloons floating off San Pedro, Los Angeles. National and state agencies were placed on heightened alert status when balloons were found in Wyoming and Montana before the end of November.
The balloons continued to arrive in Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Kansas, Iowa, Washington, Idaho, South Dakota, and Nevada (including one that landed near Yerington that was discovered by cowboys who cut it up and used it as a hay tarp. Balloons were discovered as well in Canada in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, the Yukon, and Northwest Territories. Army Air Forces or Navy fighters scrambled to intercept the balloons, but they had little success; the balloons flew very high and surprisingly fast, and fighters destroyed fewer than 20. American authorities concluded the greatest danger from these balloons would be wildfires in the Pacific coastal forests. The Fourth Air Force, Western Defense Command, and Ninth Service Command organized the Firefly Project of 2,700 troops, including 200 paratroopers of the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion with Stinson L-5 Sentinel and Douglas C-47 Skytrain aircraft. These men were stationed at critical points for use in fire-fighting missions. The 555th suffered one fatality and 22 injuries fighting fires. Through Firefly, the military used the United States Forest Service as a proxy agency to combat FuGo. Due to limited wartime fire suppression personnel, Firefly relied upon the 555th as well as conscientious objectors.
By early 1945, Americans were becoming aware that something strange was going on. Balloons had been sighted and explosions heard, from California to Alaska. Something that appeared to witnesses to be like a parachute descended over Thermopolis, Wyoming. A fragmentation bomb exploded, and shrapnel was found around the crater. On March 10th, 1945, one of the last paper balloons descended in the vicinity of the Manhattan Project's production facility at the Hanford Site. This balloon caused a short circuit in the power lines supplying electricity for the nuclear reactor cooling pumps, but backup safety devices restored power almost immediately. Japanese propaganda broadcasts announced great fires and an American public in panic, declaring casualties in the thousands. With no evidence of any effect, General Kusaba was ordered to cease operations in April 1945, believing that the mission had been a total fiasco. The expense was large, and in the meantime the B-29s had destroyed two of the three hydrogen plants needed by the project. On May 5th, 1945, a pregnant woman and five children were killed when they discovered a balloon bomb that had landed in the forest of Gearhart Mountain in Southern Oregon. Military personnel arrived on the scene within hours, and saw that the balloon still had snow underneath it, while the surrounding area did not. They concluded that the balloon bomb had drifted to the ground several weeks earlier, and had lain there undisturbed until found by the group.
The remains of balloons continued to be discovered after the war. Eight were found in the 1940s, three in the 1950s, and two in the 1960s. In 1978, a ballast ring, fuses, and barometers were found near Agness, Oregon, and are now part of the collection of the Coos Historical & Maritime Museum. The Japanese balloon attacks on North America were at that time the longest ranged attacks ever conducted in the history of warfare, a record which was not broken until the 1982 Operation Black Buck raids during the Falkland Islands War.

GVL / Between States of Being

Between States of Being Andrew Bailey Arend, Dakota Gearhart, Martha Glenn, and Rachel Meginnes October 7 - November 19, 2022 Opening Reception: Friday, October 7, 6-9pm
Tiger Strikes Asteroid Greenville (TSA GVL) is excited to present Between States of Being opening October 7 at the TSA GVL gallery. This exhibition, featuring works by Andrew Bailey Arend, Dakota Gearhart, Martha Glenn, and Rachel Meginnes, explores a nebulous space of transformation, where the self is neither what it was before or what it will become. There exists a nothingness between states of being. When something transforms from one thing to another, as with metamorphosis from a caterpillar into a butterfly, there is a time when it is neither the thing it was, nor the thing it will become. But, this space is necessary for metamorphosis, even in the smallest increment. This exhibition is curated by TSA GVL member Lindsay Smith Gustave.
Inspired by Jean-Paul Sartre’s existential text, Being and Nothingness, Between States of Being explores the inevitability of this liminal space as we move between states of being. Our present is a constantly evolving negation of our past, a nothingness that functions purely as a transition from old to new.
These artworks present a conversation that offers different moments in this transformative process: with ceramics, Arend forges the result of alchemical change; Gearhart explores, in video, the nonsensical decay inherent in the metamorphosis into the future self; Glenn envisions the timeless space of waiting in sculptural form; and through reclaimed textiles, Meginnes examines the breaking down of the past self.
Emblematic of a human need to always be in-process, consciously or unconsciously, Between States of Being provides moments for meditation—a pause between past and future. This period of nothingness is a suspension of time for the viewer to reflect on where we were, where we are, and where we might be going.
Andrew Bailey Arend (b. 1987 Anchorage, Alaska) is an artist who explores relationships between body, action, material and ecology. His work generally takes form as sculpture and also touches on performance, drawing and photography. His work is exhibited nationally and he has been awarded residencies and fellowships including Lighthouse Works, The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts and the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology. Andrew Bailey Arend received his MFA from Alfred University in 2016. He is currently a Lecturer and Lab Operations Assistant Manager for the Art Department at Appalachian State University.
Dakota Gearhart is a transmedia artist whose practice concerns the effects of modern science and technology with a particular focus on the radical deconstruction of contemporary power structures according to an ecofeminist worldview. She seeks to make the familiar strange—and sometimes the strange familiar—and through that inversion, articulate a more robust and less oppressive future. Recent works have explored such topics as the commercial flower trade, gender bias in big tech, and coral reef tourism in her home state of Florida. Color, humor, and a disorienting species of maximalism are common features of her collage-based aesthetic. Her work has exhibited at The Bronx Museum of Art, NY; Tacoma Art Museum, WA; Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, FL; Disjecta Contemporary Art Center, OR; Horse Hospital, London; Horse and Pony Gallery, Berlin; Lab’Attoir, Thessaloniki, Greece; and Taiyuan University, Taiyuan, China. She has been awarded the BRIC Digital Media Fellowship, Franklin Furnace Fellowship, and a National Endowments for the Arts US-Japan Creative Fellowship which will bring her work to Japan in 2022. She is based in New York City where she teaches Motion Graphics with Parsons School of Design at The New School and with the Integrated Design Media program at New York University.
Martha Glenn is an artist and gallerist living and working in North Carolina. She completed her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2021, with a BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She previously resided in Berlin, Germany and has exhibited internationally with solo shows at The Anderson (2021, Richmond), The DePillars Gallery (2020, Richmond), State of the Art (2016, Berlin).
Rachel Meginnes is an artist and educator committed to the idea that art creates more fulfilling lives. Rachel received her BA in Art at Earlham College in 1999 and her MFA in Fibers at the University of Washington, Seattle in 2005. In between, she spent two years studying traditional Japanese textile processes in Morioka, Japan. From 2005 – 2011, she co-owned and operated an international rug company based out of Sikkim, India and Seattle, WA. In 2012, Rachel was awarded a three-year residency at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina which began her shift to making art full-time. Her artwork has been exhibited internationally in Thailand and Hong Kong and can be found in the collections of the Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington, NC; the University of Arkansas, Little Rock, AR; Fidelity Bank, Raleigh, NC; the Capitol Broadcasting Company, Durham, NC; Samsel Architects, Asheville, NC; and in private collections around the country. Rachel has taught all ages and levels from underserved youth in after school programs to college students and adults in the midst of choosing and changing their careers. Her workshops integrating the subjects of art, craft, and design have been offered at craft schools and colleges across the country and in Canada. Rachel has recently developed an arts educational partnership between Earlham College in Richmond, IN and Penland School of Crafts in Penland, NC to promote craft education within the context of academic art. Rachel lives and works in Western North Carolina.

Tonight. April 11
Today is my parents 25th wedding anniversary. My parents took the day off. I went to my first hour. A CNA class. I'd probably like the class because it is very interesting But the teacher is very very annoying. She bugs me and I dislike her a lot. I need to figure out why. After that class I went home and helped bring lindy my cat to the vet. Lindy is a dark tabby cat. She's an indoor/outdoor cat so she needs her rabies shot. And her nails clipped. We usually clip her nails but it's a 2 man job. She's a feisty girl. She had her front claws. And she can hold a grudge. We found out her kidneys are slowly slowly slowly getting worse. She's reverted to being a little camel. She drinks and drinks and drinks. We have a cup of water sitting on the floor of every bathroom. We have 3 bathrooms. And her water dish and all our cups. She always steals a drink. She's old. Like 17 years old. As of yesterday. And she is a bit pudgy. But that's ok. I love her with every fiber in my body. After that I went back to school for 3rd hour. We did an interactive lab. It was pretty fun. Then I went to work. I work at gearharts floral and gift. I make arrangements and clean. Today we unboxed a large shipment of Easter plants. And unpackaged multiple boxes of merchandise. I learned how to and made 3 wristlets. For the P.A.L.S prom. Their a special needs group in town. Then I left to go to gym. My last hour of the day. Before I went back to school. I put gas in my truck. I drive a tan doge Dakota from 2004. It's worn out and rust. And I'm always cursing at it for it's flaws. But I love that truck. A lot. My dad gave it to me when I got my drivers license. It used to be His truck. And I have a lot of good memories with it. I put $20 in the tank. And I bought a Twix for me and pretzel M&M's for Miranda. We have gym together and we aren't really there to get fit. We just want to graduate. We always try to leave as early as possible. But today we stayed the full time. Then I went back to work. And made bouts to match the wristlets for the prom. Then cleaned. Then my boss made the 25 rose bouquet my dad had ordered for my mom. While she did that I made and orange poppy and white alstro. Arrangement for the cooler. And an arrangement for my parents. It was a rectangular light turquoise dish. That could be mounted in the wall. I put 2 succulents and peach, orange, yellow, and white Renocculous. I think I spelt it wrong. But. That's ok. It was worth the cost. I delivered them home when I got off work. And mom and dad loved them. They ate cheese burgers and bacon for dinner. And since Easter is coming up my dad made boulka buns. We're Russian and we take Easter very seriously lol. I don't eat mean so I are 3 boulkas and some cashews. I watched the first episode of 13 reasons why. Everyone is raving about it. It's a Netflix series. I found out my boyfriend ray is out of town today. He went 3 hours away. And won't be back till tomorrow ...?im a little upset because he never plans anything and when he does they always change. So I'm gonna wait and see I guess. Whatever. Easter is this Sunday and I'm pretty excited. I really don't like getting gifts. It makes me feel weird. But it's ok. I bought 2inch swede yellow shoes and a multi colored floral dress. I just hope everything goes ok...

Entry Lists Released for U.S. Short Track Nationals at Bristol
The expected entry lists for Bristol Motor Speedway’s U.S. Short Track Nationals have been released. To no one’s surprise the lists are massive, with over 500 drivers ready to attack the historic facility May 19-21.
The divisions involved are Super Late Models (co-sanctioned by CRA, CARS, and the Southern Super Series), Pro Late Models (sanctioned by CRA), Late Model Stocks (sanctioned by CARS), Modifieds (sanctioned by the National Short Track Racing Alliance), Street Stocks (sanctioned by CRA), and Sport Compacts (sanctioned by Vores Cup)
Just a few weeks ago Bristol requested the participating sanctioning bodies limit each division to a certain number of entrants. The maximum number set by the Speedway are: 80 Super Late Models, 80 Pro/Crate Late Models, 60 Late Model Stocks, 80 Modifieds, 110 Street Stocks, and 110 Compacts. The numbers have been exceeded in all but two divisions.
Bristol is now asking those who may not compete to contact their corresponding sanctioning bodies.

Celebrate the New Year with the Georgetown Art Attack
Start your New Year off in Georgetown as we usher in 2018 with a dazzling array of contemporary visual and performing arts throughout the historic industrial arts district. Jump aboard the FREE Art Ride to check out our west end locations such as studio e, and Equinox Studios!
Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery presents “Now”, and exhibition featuring images by a dozen emerging and established artists in the new comix anthology of the same name from Fantagraphics Books. Associate publisher Eric Reynolds will discuss his editorial process at 7:00 PM on January 13.
All City Coffee Stay Sweet & Ride High! New Work by Devi Ann Pellerin. Woodcut wall hangings, ceramic pots, prints, and custom painted motorcycle helmets. This show is pure fun and inspired by all my favorite things: Lowbrow, cartoons, 70’s illustration, vintage motorcycles and a good time!, vintage motorcycles and a good time!
Rainier Glass Studio Become part of the glass art experience, browse the gallery of NW artists unique blown glass art and stay for live demonstrations at 7pm during Art Attack.
Bridge Productions Bringing in the new year, Bridge Productions is very excited to host this intimate group show, Somewhere Nearby, curated by Sue Danielson; and to welcome New York artists Catherine Haggarty, Julie Torres, Matthew Neil Gehring, Paolo Arao, Minku Kim, and Sarah Trigg to Seattle. This tender bridge connecting the edges of place is an attempt to further the connection between our cities and our coasts through the alignment of art and practice. Opening reception 13 January 6-9PM.
The Alice Gallery presents BODYWARP, a solo exhibition by Indira Allegra. Warp is the vertical thread held under tension on a loom, making the act of weaving possible. BODYWARP, is an exhibition exploring weaving as performance requiring a unique receptivity to tensions extant in political and emotional spaces. Like the accumulation of memory in cloth, in BODYWARP, looms and other tools of the weaver’s craft become organs of memory, pulling the artist’s body into an intimate choreography between maker, tool and the narrative of a place. Performance and conversation open to the public Friday January 12.
Oxbow Seattle-based artist, Barbara Robertson has created a site-specific installation, titled “Architectonic,” composed of three projected animations which use the expansive Oxbow space as an integral part of the image. This project is an on-going work in progress, and Ms. Robertson will continue to add new elements to the installation through the end of the exhibition.
Prairie Underground presents Everyday Possibilities of Feeling Like A Totally Different Person by Dakota Gearhart. A series of new videos incorporating collage, performance, and sound that take inspiration from popular make-up tutorial videos, but turn them into surrealist narratives of face shapeshifting. An ode to femme culture, as well as, a look into identity, gender, and costuming, the videos playful speak to the presentation of self and the many forms we can inhabit simultaneously.
Machine House Brewery is showing understated pop culture references and infectious jokes through illustrations, paintings and mixed media pieces by Nicolas Anderson. Open during Art Attack, simultaneously hosting “Be Loud” a bingo fundraiser for King County Sexual Assault Resource Center. Open to the public with no cover charge.
Illumination Studio# 305 presents Rostad and Ferrell. presenting Rostad, Dari Stolzoff and Ferrell. Rostad, explores the inner beauty of our neurological system through vibrant color and Ferrell explores spatial and color field through abstraction. Also Dari Stolzoff as abstract expression in in bright color and light. Music by “DJ” Luscious Leopard Lips, who brings background music with a Theremin synthesizer and keyboards. With new work up, you’ll be glad you came by.
The Conservatory will be hosting Jewelry and Fashion Artists with pop-ups this January’s Art Attack. FIVE distinct artists showcasing their fashion accessory and jewelry creations!
studio e rot: Brian A. Beck. Beck’s latest work questions the stability of a single meaning conventionally granted to a familiar object. Departing from what appear to be wooden children’s toys, the art pieces are composed from carefully handcrafted and tenuously related elements, abstracted to their basic shapes and color. Beck’s category-defying display of three-dimensional collages mounted on white walls breaks the boundaries between daily objects, sculpture, painting, and conceptual art. Open Friday & Saturday from 1-6pm and always during GEORGETOWN ART ATTACK
Equinox Studios is a growing arts community in West Georgetown, home to over 100 artists working in an inspiring array of mediums, including dance, blacksmithing, welding, woodworking, cycle fabrication, sculpture, painting, film, glass and art performances monthly.

Next Thursday night I'll be in Seattle to read at an event put on by Authors, Publishers and Readers of Independent Literature (APRIL) at the Northwest Film Forum. I'm going to read at 7:30, and then they're going to screen JAWS. I think I'll probably mostly read poems about animals mauling and eating people, of which I have a few. I'm going to put the blood in the water.
APRIL made this little movie to warn people about sharks kind of/promote the event. Besides me and Spielberg, there will be a video from Dakota Gearhart, a raffle featuring fabulous prizes, and beer from Naked City Brewery.
You can purchase tickets, tickets and beer, and tickets and endless beer here.
