Waddon roads go to RAAC and ruin with test centre at Hilton

Croydon fails its test: local and national bodies have failed to come up with an obvious solution in Waddon There’s been a noticeable increase in learner driver traffic in and around the Waddon estate lately, after the government agency moved its driving test centre from…

Navigating the DVSA Practical Test: What Every Learner Driver Needs to Know
The journey to becoming a licensed driver in the UK culminates with the DVSA practical test, a milestone that assesses your driving ability and readiness for the road.
Understanding the nuances of this test is crucial for any learner driver aiming for success. Here's a concise guide to help you navigate through the process.
Understanding the Test Structure
The DVSA practical test is designed to evaluate your driving skills in various road and traffic conditions. It begins with an eyesight check, followed by two vehicle safety questions known as the "show me, tell me" questions. The main part of the test involves demonstrating your ability to drive safely and competently, including special manoeuvres and possibly an emergency stop.
Preparation is Key
Preparation for the practical test should be thorough and well-rounded. This includes mastering the driving skills and familiarising yourself with the test routes and conditions in your area. A significant part of your preparation should also involve understanding the theory behind driving, for which you must book theory test and pass it before you can take the practical test.
On the Day of the Test
On the day of your DVSA practical test, ensure you arrive early with all the necessary documentation, including your theory test pass certificate and provisional licence. Stay calm, listen carefully to the examiner's instructions, and remember the training and advice from your driving lessons.
Conclusion
Passing the DVSA practical test is a pivotal step towards gaining your full driving licence. With the right preparation, including successfully booking and passing your theory test, you can approach the practical test with confidence, ready to demonstrate your driving skills and road safety knowledge.

lmao the conversation with the dvsa went like this:
me: hi, my instructor asked me to call and ask why i can't book a test. my theory runs out today so she said i should still be able to book a test as long as it hasn't expired
dvsa man: no, you can only book a test date that's before your theory expired. so you could theoretically take your test today, if you had a test slot. but if you want a test date from the 4th of december onwards you'll have to retake your theory.
me: yep. i figured. she also told me to ask if you can put me on the hold list but there isn't one, is there?
dvsa man: no.
me: yeah i didn't think so

N155 GTR, January 2023.
Lots of things were needed to get the DAF through a DVSA test of roadworthiness. As it’s a private HGV there are a few things that don’t require test/certification but on the whole the test is pretty strict, and rightly so.
The unit had been stood for two years so needed a good mechanical once over. Egertons Fleet Services in Milton Keynes took care of things for me. It needed small things like marker lights and kerb mirror sorting but the rest was pretty big stuff. Four new tyres, two steerer due to age and the ten year law and two drive tyres due to wear. Rear brake linings were near non-existent and inner hub seals were leaking. The exhaust proved the most tricky item to source. A section of the pipe was not available due to parts now being obsolete for this vehicle. Thankfully the people at Egertons know a good fabricator who managed to source the right gauge pipe and copy the original part that came off.
I found a few cassettes in the local record store so obviously they came home with me to live in the cab. The old Grundig player was just about working at the time of collection from Egertons but I have since upgraded, more to follow on that.
Images of the wagon on the road were shot by my boy from another vehicle.

How to Become an MOT Tester: Requirements and Training for UK Professionals?
Becoming a certified MOT tester in the UK is a rewarding career choice for those passionate about vehicle safety and maintenance. The role involves inspecting vehicles to ensure they meet legal safety and environmental standards. This article outlines the steps, requirements, and training necessary to become an MOT tester in the UK.
Understanding the Role of an MOT Tester
An MOT (Ministry of Transport) tester is responsible for conducting annual vehicle inspections to ensure compliance with safety regulations. The primary duties include:
Performing thorough inspections of various vehicle components.
Identifying defects and advising on necessary repairs.
Completing official documentation for passed or failed tests.
Ensuring that vehicles meet environmental standards.
Requirements to Become an MOT Tester
To become an MOT tester in the UK, candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Here are the key requirements:
Age and Licensing
Must be at least 18 years old.
Hold a current and full UK driving licence for the vehicle classes you intend to test.
Experience
A minimum of four years of full-time employment in servicing and repairing vehicles is required. This experience must be relevant to the types of vehicles you wish to test.
Criminal Record
Candidates must have no unspent convictions for criminal offences. The DVSA will assess your suitability based on your criminal record.
Good Repute
You must be deemed ‘of good repute’ by the DVSA, which involves a background check to ensure you are suitable for this responsibility.
Relevant Qualifications
To become a class 3 or 5 MOT tester, you need to have a level 2 testing certificate in class 4 and 7 vehicles (group B) and pass an MOT demonstration test after obtaining this certificate.
Steps to Become an MOT Tester
Step 1: Verify Eligibility
Before embarking on your journey to become an MOT tester, verify that you meet all eligibility requirements. This includes checking your driving licence status, work experience, and criminal record.
Step 2: Complete an MOT Tester Qualification Course
Once you confirm your eligibility, the next step is to enroll in an MOT tester qualification course. Here’s what you need to know:
Course Duration: The course typically lasts at least 29 hours, which includes both theoretical and practical training.
Course Content: Key areas covered in the course include:
Safe working practices in a vehicle test centre.
Managing professional development as an MOT tester.
Conducting pre-test checks.
Carrying out actual MOT tests.
Assessments: The course concludes with a multiple-choice question test.
Step 3: Pass the DVSA Demonstration Test
After successfully completing the qualification course, candidates must pass a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) demonstration test, which assesses practical skills in a real-world setting. Here’s how to prepare:
Preparation Tips:
Review the MOT testing manuals and special notices.
Practice your inspection routine thoroughly.
Booking the Test: To book your demonstration test, you will need:
Your MOT testing service user ID.
The vehicle test station (VTS) number where you plan to take your test.
After Qualification: Maintaining Your Status as an MOT Tester
Once qualified, becoming a certified MOT tester in the UK requires ongoing training and assessments:
Annual Training Every year, testers must complete a minimum of three hours of training related to updates in testing procedures and regulations.
Annual Assessment In addition to training, testers must pass an annual assessment based on DVSA specifications to maintain their professional status.
Returning to Testing If you stop testing for any reason, additional training may be required before resuming duties as an MOT tester.
Additional Considerations
Financial Aspects
The cost of becoming an MOT tester can vary based on course providers. It’s essential to consider:
Course fees for the qualification program.
Potential costs associated with retaking tests if necessary.
Expenses related to ongoing training and assessments each year.
Career Opportunities
Becoming an MOT tester opens up various career paths within the automotive industry, including:
Working at authorized testing stations.
Advancing into supervisory roles within vehicle maintenance facilities.
Specializing further into areas such as diagnostics or repair management.
Conclusion
Becoming a certified MOT tester in the UK is a structured process that requires dedication, experience, and ongoing education. By following these steps- verifying eligibility, completing necessary training courses, passing required tests, and committing to annual assessments—individuals can successfully embark on this rewarding career path. With a growing emphasis on vehicle safety and environmental standards, qualified MOT testers play a crucial role in maintaining road safety across the UK.
