DS9 4x15 Bar Association thoughts (I’m re-watching, so beware spoilers for future episodes!) [5 July ‘23]
So hype for episode. I love Rom to bits.
"Mister Worf, you're in love. With the Defiant." "You exaggerate, as usual." But he huffed in amusement and that was almost a smile, he doesn't do that with anyone else
Julian is so disgruntled about this outfit, aww :3
Leeta is awesome, advocating for Rom like that <3 I look forward to seeing more of her!
"It's all part of our generous employee compensation package. No sick days, no vacations, no paid overtime." Such sarcasm, Rom, I wasn't expecting that!
"I don't think Julian would approve." "We could ask him." ...I do actually like Rom, Leeta and Julian as a ship tbh
"Isn't this your tooth sharpener?" xD how proud was Worf of that purchase, that Jadzia knows what it is?
"They did not happen on the Enterprise." "Really?" Odo's grin - he's been waiting for an opportunity to reel off the Enterprise's biggest security breaches, right? XD
"We're going to form a... a..." Oh Rom, you're being super brave, I believe you can say it!
Miles perking up at the mention of Rom's union and being super supportive... And then telling Rom about how his ancestor died
It's always fun seeing iconic lines in action. "He was more than a hero, he was a union man."
"After that, it'll work like a charm." "Until the next time it breaks down." "That's the problem when you combine Cardassian, Bajoran and Federation technology." Love Miles being sarcastic at Worf, and Worf being so put out at the idea of things breaking down - poor guy, it's a good job he's not an engineer!
"It's a lot easier than working on the Enterprise." Worf's so confused by this XD
Quark's laughter before realising Rom actually means it
Hologram Quark!
Quark trying to call the cops on the strikers is so very him :/
And Odo agreeing! - never has he felt more police-like.
"But I have strict orders from Captain Sisko not to impinge on your employees' freedom of expression," he sighs, disdainfully. COP
"Wait a minute. I can't believe it! He's an enter." "Not for long!" I'm so here for O'Brien going after Worf
The three of them disgruntled in a holding cell is hilarious
Julian looks like a nervous school boy
"Captain? Can we leave now?" "I'll tell Constable Odo to let you go... in the morning." I love Sisko's "sense of humour".
Quark does not understand Rom's position at *all*, expecting an offer of private Latinum to sway him.
"Workers of the world, unite!" ❤❤
Oh Brunt's looking forward to this, isn't he? UGH
Love seeing the other ferengi getting involved and speaking up
"Spare me. I'm old, I'm fragile. I'll push the rest of them off myself." Classic.
"Don't let him intimidate you." ROM <3
The venom with which Brunt looks at Leeta, as he says "living on this station has... corrupted you."
"Standing tall like Sean O'Brien!" it's so cute how that story has inspired Rom
O'Brien's little thumbs up at Rom :3
"But you'll be living out there all by yourself!" "I know." Oh, Worf. smh
"What you were trying to do was make yourself feel important. Making me feel dumb made you feel smart. But I'm not dumb and you're not half as smart as you think you are." YES ROM
"If brunt gets rid of me, all your problems will be solved." This has really been the making of Rom
"You're here to help me, right?" "Wrong." Hah! Really, Quark?
"Let's see. Who else does Rom care about...?" Quark.
"If Odo hadn't come along when he did... "
"You have to dissolve the union... At least officially..." Yeah, an idea's coming
"Six months!" "It's the best I can do." "No, it's not. All you have to do is make up one of your fake business ledgers for the FCA. They'll never know the difference." "Shush! All right, you'll get your raises by the end of the week." End of the week?! Good negotiation, Rom, I love how well you know your brother - but also Quark was uncharacteristically generous with that haggling?
I'm sad the union couldn't last
"Better?" Hehe, Worf is so annoyed that even here, someone has found him to interrupt his peace XD At least it's Jadzia, am I right?
"Sooner or later, you're going to have to adapt." I guess he does when he moves in with Jadzia? I can't imagine she moves to the Defiant...
"You're quitting?" "Effective immediately." "I gave you everything you wanted." "I know. But if the strike taught me anything, it's that I do a lot better when you're not around." Quark is so nonplussed XD But I love this for Rom
"Think about it from my point of view. If I keep working for you, all I have to look forward to is waiting for you to die so I can inherit the bar." Yep, that's sure a take to have
"Now get me my snail juice! ...Brother." Aww, he's so pleased with himself - and well he should be!

I rewatched 4x15 (Bar Association - the one where Quark’s employees form a union (good for them)) and remembered how when I first saw this episode, I had, like, a little Quark and Quodo squee moment when Quark was in sickbay having been roughed up by Brunt as a warning to Rom and he says, "Those Nausicaans shattered my left eye socket, broke two of my ascending ribs, and punctured my lower lung. If Odo hadn't come when he did..."
One: That was a whole off-screen Quodo moment and you know it. And two: seeing Quark all beat up awoke something in me (why!!).

Voyager Post-Show Books Read Order + Rewatch List
I’m lending my Voyager + some TNG books to my mom to read, and I sent her an email with this list that I made.  I thought it might be helpful for other people, (and also it’d be easier for me to find next time) if I posted it online somewhere.
First, it’s also a read order for the major books covering Voyager happenings plus a few TNG books that I also own for the same era.  It’s got all the major Voyager happenings in it, and a few TNG books that are optional, though most play into what’s happening with Voyager.
In reading the books, I found it was helpful to go back and rewatch certain episodes to do things like remember who the minor / guest characters were and their plots when they showed back up, or review some character arcs for the main characters, or just the overarching plots of episodes which the books referenced.
I also linked to their pages on Memory Alpha for easy referencing, but rewatching is better.
Unless otherwise marked, suggested episodes below are Voyager episodes.
Any episodes I put a * after I'd say is critical to understanding the book(s), otherwise it's just helpful.  I’m happy to add to this list if anyone has other suggestions.
Voyager - Homecoming - This book deals with the immediate aftermath of Voyager's Endgame (the series finale). This and the next book are a two-parter.  They're good but not great.  The Voyager books get much better starting with the fifth. Rewatch List - Non Sequitur (2x05) Hunters (4x15) Lineage (7x12)   Prophecy (7x14) * Author, Author (7x20) Endgame (the very last episode) *
Voyager - The Farther Shore - Part 2 of the above.
Voyager - Old Wounds - This and the next Voyager book are also a two-parter.  They are... okay.  The Voyager books get a new author after this and then they get really, really, really good. Rewatch List - Tattoo - (2x09) *  Nothing Human (5x08) TNG Journey's End (7x20) (Chakotay's people live on the planet Starfleet is trying to relocate in this TNG episode.)
Voyager - Enemy of My Enemy - Part 2 of the above.
TNG - Death in Winter -  Non-essential for Voyager.  This takes place shortly after the movie Nemesis and deals with Picard having to rebuild the crew.  This is maybe the worst of all the books I've read in this series, but one important thing does happen. Rewatch List - TNG Nemesis (the movie) * Eventually, you're going to want to rewatch the below episodes, I think it'd be useful to watch them before the following books.   TNG - The Best of Both Worlds 1 and 2 (3x26, 4x1) Voyager - The Q and The Grey (3x11) * Voyager - Scorpion Part 1  and 2 (3x26, 4x1)
TNG - Resistance - Moderately important for future Voyager stuff, skip if you want.  Most rewatch episodes were covered above.
TNG - Q&A -  Honestly, a rewatch list for Q&A would be every single episode with Q in it that hasn’t been touched on.  This is maybe my favorite of the TNG-only books on this list, but it’s not very important for the Voyager list.
Voyager - Full Circle - FIRST HALF ONLY!!! - There's a break in the middle of this book, with a timeskip in between.  ONLY READ THE FIRST HALF at this point if youre doing an in-order read with TNG books as well.  If you don’t care about anything but explicitly Voyager books, skip down to #12 as Beyer does a good job of explaining what happens in the subsequent books between the two parts of Full Circle. This is also the book where Voyager starts becoming amazing.  The only bad thing about Kirsten Beyer's books is you'll be sad all the rest of the Star Trek books aren't as good as hers.   No watchlist as mostly the first half of the book is wrapping up the storylines from Christine Golden's first four Voyager books.
TNG - Before Dishonor - This is nearly as much a Voyager book as TNG.  This book is instrumental in understanding everything that happens afterwards.  I won’t get into my opinion about the book itself though because it’s not very flattering.  You probably want to read at least the first and last chapters, the rest is... skippable if you’re not enjoying it. If you haven't rewatched Voyager's The Q and the Grey and Endgame yet, you're really going to want to here.
TNG - Greater Than the Sum - Just started reading this one, I’ll update once I’m done. Yes, I’m reading some of these books very of out of order. :)  *edit* It was an improvement over Before Dishonor, I’d recommend reading as it does bridge into the next books.
TNG/VOY/DS9/More - Destiny Trilogy - (Gods of Night/Mere Mortals/Lost Souls - I bought them all as a collection)  This is a massive crossover event trilogy but next on my to-read list  I do know that characters from TNG, Voyager, DS9, Enterprise, plus Titan (Riker's ship) are all in it. I don't have a rewatch list but I'll make it as I get to reading it. *Edit* OK I’ve finished reading it. My opinion is that you should read this trilogy. Yes, it’s long, but also very worth it.  Probably my favorite non-Voyager books on this list.  There are only a couple of cameos of Voyager characters but they are meaningful, and Seven has a small storyline of her own, as does Tuvok (since he’s on the Titan serving under Riker.) The writing is very good, the story is great, and reading it massively increased my understanding of and investment in a major storyline throughout the rest of the Voyager books.  I also just really, really enjoyed it.  If you don’t want to read anything else not explicitly Voyager, I still rec you read this trilogy. Rewatch List Enterprise: Home (4x03)* Affliction (4x15) & Divergence (4x16)
Okay, now read the second half of Full Circle.  Cry a lot about it. Everything I talk about from here on out is just Voyager.
Unworthy -  The adventure finally re-begins! Rewatch List In The Flesh (5x04) Okay but maybe put off rewatching this episode after the climax of the books. Life Line (6x24) Homestead (7x23) TNG - Darmok (5x02)  (The new Voyager CMO is a Tamarian, though you can put off rewatching this until Acts of Contrition if you really want, the character doesn't get important til then.)
Children of the Storm - No rewatch list.
The Eternal Tide -  My FAVORITE of all the books. Rewatch List- Q2 (7x19) * The Gift (4x02) TNG True Q (6x06)
Protectors -  This and the next two books are their own trilogy, so the below episodes are for all three. Rewatch List - Twisted (2x06) Unity (3x17)   Counterpoint (5x10) Dragon's Teeth (6x07) Unimatrix Zero (6x24) and Part II (7x01) (If you haven't rewatched TNG - Darmok 5x02 yet, do that now)
Acts of Contrition
Atonement
A Pocket Full of Lies - Watch List - Year of Hell Parts 1 and 2 (4x08 and 09) * Shattered (7x11) *
Architects of Infinity - It’s been a couple of months since my first reads of these two books but I don’t recall any particular episodes jumping out as needed rewatches as I did.  Let me know if you think I’m wrong and I’ll update the list.

breaking down the season to the single episodes reveals a lot more things that I don't like about it but still. overall quality fairly high
4x01-02 "The Way of the Warrior" — don't get me wrong "Scorpion (part 2)" on Voyager is a good episode but if I had to choose one Trek episode that was made to bring onto the show a new character in order to boost ratings this would be IT. It's just so much fun!!
4x03 "The Visitor" — CRYING LIKE A BABY EVERY TIME I WATCH IT this episode is so affecting and well made and Jake loves his dad so much...
4x04 "Hippocratic Oath" — This would've been an interesting one if it weren't for how it ends which sucks majorly (O'Brien why!!)
4x05 "Indiscretion" — I HATE Dukat's ugly mug so much and throughout the episode Kira has to convince him to not kill his own daughter but also. Ziyal!! ETA: absolutely HILARIOUS B-plot of Sisko going to Julian and Jadzia for relationship advice (for a problem that I should mention was pretty much entirely due to Jadzia's big mouth)
4x06 "Rejoined" — idk if I like this episode... lol can you imagine me saying that. Literally this episode changed the course of the last four years of my life I don't know what else to say about it
4x07 "Starship Down" — this episode is so good... I'm glad so many fans now recognize it as such. SO many different relationships are explored in this one, and I don't think I'm exaggerating if I say that to me it represents 90s Trek character writing at its best
4x08 "Little Green Men" — a very very fun one in a season that's chock full of good Ferengi & Quark episodes?? I love this spin on time travel
4x09 "The Sword of Kahless" — Another super fun one. Who's to say that Klingon plots have to be about political intrigue. Also making Kor a recurring character is pretty much a stroke of genius if you ask me
4x10 "Our Man Bashir" — I don't think this episode needs any explanation; Role-play Or Die is such a classic holodeck setup but the extra funny part here is that technically only Julian and Garak are role-playing
4x11 "Homefront", 4x12 "Paradise Lost" — I really like these two episodes even though "Past Tense" in s3 was probably the better mid-season two-parter. It works as a good reminder that the Dominion threat is still looming even if the overarching plot has strayed a bit from that, and it fits within the overall theme of the show when it comes to questioning the Federation's 'utopian' status
4x13 "Crossfire" — I fucking hate this episode. Sorry I don't know how else to qualify it. Odo's niceguyism at its worst, with of one stupidest relationship Kira's ever had just to contrive a reason for Odo to pine for her even more. Quark's presence is genuinely the only thing I save from it.
4x14 "Return To Grace" — Now I would really hate this episode if DS9 had chosen to "redeem" Dukat or w/e but they didn't, and while I'm sorry Kira has to spend more time with him I'm very much not sorry that she shuts him down every time (and manages to bring Ziyal off that ship)
4x15 "Sons of Mogh" — An episode that could've been interesting entirely ruined by the nonsensical finale, much like "Hippocratic Oath". (Also what the hell is this fascination with ritual killing I'll just never know)
4x16 "Bar Association" — Love this episode, kind of getting tired of the memes but w/e it's still a very good episode
4x17 "Accession" — Kinda fucked up episode!! I appreciate it anyway because it reprises the complicated relationship between Kira and Sisko, and Sisko's own feelings about his role as Emissary.
4x18 "Rules of Engagement" — eeh. boring episode tbh. I think other episodes do much better job of bringing Worf into the fabric of the show, this is just forgettable.
4x19 "Hard Time" — 'Mind Prison' as a trope is something that always tickled me and this one episode does it very well (except the mandatory DS9 attitude towards therapy and recovery which is very meh)
4x20 "Shattered Mirror" — Blaze it but I don't really like mirror universe episodes except the first and last ones lol
4x21 "Muse" — The A plot is horrible (poor Jake wtf) but the B plot is the best Lwaxana plot DS9 ever had and I'm crying rn. The Jarring Juxtaposition Of DS9 Plots is a well known phenomenon so
4x22 "For The Cause" — brilliant tbh. What other show would transform a recurring character like Micheal Eddington so thoroughly after his role of 'stickler to Starfleet security in opposition to Odo' had been given to Worf?? all the while continuing the Maquis plot?? and with one hell of a bang too. Plus it gave Kasidy something to do beyond being Sisko's LI (which I don't think the show does enough of tbqh). The only gripe I had with this ep is that the plot works only because the writers... forgot about Jadzia somehow?? idk the first time I watched it it really bothered me but on rewatch I'm mostly just along for the ride
4x23 "To The Death" — One of the rare Jem'Hadar plots that work for me, plus yes alright Weyoun first appearance. But my favorite part is the dialogue Jadzia gets to have while on the Defiant
4x24 "The Quickening" — cryin in the club it's such a nice Julian (&Jadzia) ep
4x25 "Body Parts" — I love both the Quark plot (which is an excellent exploration of his character) and, of course, the 'Kira gets Keiko's baby and gets invited into the O'Brien family' part as well. Really good.
4x26 "Broken Link" — Kind of subdued and claustrophobic but it builds onto the S3 finale and keeps the Dominion plot moving. As far as DS9 finales go, pretty solid (bonus somewhat hilarious detail of Garak attempting genocide for which he gets like six months in prison)
literally is there anything better than ds9 season 4? I don't think so

Hello, amazing person! Who is your favorite DS9 character? I know it's hard to pick just one but, maybe, three top characters? And maybe tell us what your three favorite episodes per season are? Only if you want to and have time, I just love hearing your opinions. :)
Hello anon!!! You sent this to me when I was in the beginning of Season 7 and I saved it until here at the end so I could give you THE DEFINITIVE ANSWERS.
DS9: TARRA’S GOSH DARN FAVES
**Note on picking method, although I’ll try to explain more if anyone wants, as coming up with a rationale for my emotional choices is one of my favorite INFJ pastimes
Character: Julian “Biscuit” Bashir, let’s face the facts and they are these. Actually it would be harder to pick ONLY TWO MORE of my darlings than to just leave it at that, so I will. This is the only cheat I’m gonna give myself though!
…except for how I’ve just decided that instead of 3 favorite eps per season I get 21 total. Because a few seasons are fave-heavy so we’re just gonna redistribute, shhh, don’t worry about it.
SEASON 11x04 ‘Babel’ - Chief O’Brien trips a booby trap left on the station and all hell & nonsense breaks loose, in the first instance of the DS9 plot conceit that dreams are made of. Specifically mine.
1x16 ‘The Forsaken’ - Just a lot of great character work here, across the whole crew. This is where I was starting to feel like I was really getting to know these people, and I really liked them.
SEASON 22x22 ‘The Wire’ - One of my favorite episode of television I have ever seen. Like of all of them, of all the television. It’s astonishing, just on an objective level, even before you get to my personal soft spots for storytelling and spies serving tea and narratives that don’t tell me the answers, GOD, never tell me.
2x23 ‘Crossover’ - In which we learn that I unironically love Mirror ‘Verse episodes like some sort of astral raccoon rolling around in this dumb glittery space garbage. (Anyway, in an unexpected “haha help me” discovery, my notes reveal that Julian was already one-sidedly referring to O’Brien as his best friend at this point.)
SEASON 33x07 ‘Civil Defense’ - Conceivably the best DS9 recap I’ve written, which makes me happy as this second station booby trap episode would be in the running for the best of the series. An absolute ball of fun made even more lovable to me by how fucking impeccable the plotting of this one is. A triumph of the writers room, a showcase of an ensemble piece, an exemplar of the space genres.
3x20-21 ‘Improbably Cause’ / ‘The Die is Cast’ - Two-parters count as one, especially GARAK TWO-PARTERS. A gift to Andrew Robinson, a gift from Andrew Robinson. Andrew Robinson!
3x22 ‘Explorers’ - Ben and Jake go on a father-son road trip in the prettiest space sailing ship the world has ever seen, and Miles and Julian get drunk and talk about their feelings: this episode is worth its weight in latinum.
SEASON 44x03 ‘Hippocratic Oath’ - Lost-crashing onto a desert island in space, NCO Chief O’Brien needs to figure out how to negotiate the increasingly undeniable/unfortunate reality that Dr. Bashir is his superior officer as well as his second spouse, in a uniquely Tarra-oriented episode that I love dearly.
4x15 ‘Bar Association’ - The one where Rom unionizes and Worf tries to figure out just what Star Trek he’s on now is honestly one of my favorites of the whole lot. Initially I was going to classify it as a standalone, but then remembered I’ve tried to explain it to people only to realize each time that it actually required such strong foundations in character and culture to work as well as it did.
4x16 ‘Accession’ - Tons of fantastic religion and relationship stuff for Kira Nerys and Ben “The Emissary” Sisko, one of my most favorite pairs, and meanwhile the Julian/Miles/Keiko storyline just shoots for the STARS.
4x24 ‘Body Parts’ - Again, every element here firing on all cylinders. Quark commissioning Garak to murder him when he least expects it, Nerys being adopted into the O’Brien family, the whole station scrounging up things to help Quark build his bar back, my tears….
SEASON 55x03 ‘Looking For Par’Mach In All the Wrong Places’ - Perhaps the best way to get across just how much I love the Andy Robinson-directed station rom-com that plays like a Deep Space Harold Lloyd film, is if I tell you it bumped ‘Doctor Bashir, I Presume’ off my Season 5 set.
5x06 ‘Trials and Tribble-ations’ - A glorious thing. Ohhhh the nostalgia, the jokes, the X-Files-esque framing device, the love, the fuchsia….
5x14-15 ‘In Purgatory’s Shadow’ / ‘By Inferno’s Light’ - Garak + intrigue + the single greatest reveal that has ever happened to me. So good I can hardly stand it. THE WAY THEY USED THE COSTUME CHANGE. God. Some part of me is still yelling.
5x25 ‘In the Cards’ - Pure happiness. Baseball cards, mad scientists, Jake and Nog on a Quest of Tasks, and begins with a high style wartime dinner table tableau that is second only to the first few minutes of Legion ‘Chapter 3’ for my all-time favorite episode opening. Hell, it might even still be first. Representative note: “this was the best episode, it’s this one.”
SEASON 66x01 ‘A Time To Stand’ & 6x05 ‘Favor the Bold’ - I love my weary weird war-worn Defiant crew, I love my crackling, smoldering Kira, I love living on a starship again, I love all the resistance plotting in Quark’s bar — I love this S6 miniseries!! I’ve picking my two favorites out of the six because we’d already established that two-parters count as one. Don’t think about it too much and it makes sense.
6x07 ‘You Are Cordially Invited’ - One of the best Jadzia Dax episodes of the series, and not just because she throws a party with a fire dancer and physically fights her mother-in-law.
6x25 ‘The Sound of Her Voice’ - Such a beautiful conceit. In many ways this is an episode about loneliness, but it comes together in a way that is actually celebrating how much connections with others truly mean to us as people. Just a wonderfully Star Trek sort of episode, in its graceful melding of the heartfelt and philosophical with a high-grade ~science fiction~ plot.
SEASON 77x06 ‘Treachery, Faith, and the Great River’ - The peak Nog episode and the peak Weyoun episode. In its melding of the hilarious and the misadventure and the fucked up, it hits that rollicking heart-rocking surreal realism vibe I associate with Heller’s Catch-22, which makes sense as memory-for-trifles told me that was the inspiration for the Great River plot. Nice.
7x21 ‘When It Rains…: Part 5’ & 7x22 ‘Tacking Into the Wind: Part 6’ - I am…treating this like a two-parter within the 10-ep conclusion stretch. Just let it happen. And when you do you will get: Kira donning a Starfleet uniform, Julian medically yelling at people over Space Skype, Miles apparently just starting to sleep over in the infirmary, Winn banishing blind Dukat to beg in the streets of Bajor, and The Garak & Kira Show, feat. the Damar Development – the Cardassian Resistance being one of my verrry favorite things to come out of this season.
7x23 ‘Extreme Measures: Part 7’ - Miles/Julian, Deep Space Inception. From my notes: “like if I’d written this story myself I would think ‘well that was self-indulgent’ — that’s the level of My Thing we’re at here.”
Honorable Mentions, holy shit there’s a lot of good stuff in this list:2x02 ‘The Circle’ / 2x03 ‘The Siege’ - 3x03 ‘House of Quark’ - 3x16 ‘Prophet Motive’ - 4x01 ‘The Way of the Warriors: Part 1 & 2’ - 4x05 ‘Rejoined’ - 4x09 ‘Our Man Bashir’ - 5x05 ‘The Assignment’ - 5x12 ‘The Begotten’ - 5x16 ‘Doctor Bashir, I Presume’ - 6x14 ‘One Little Ship’ - 6x18 ‘Inquisition’ - 7x03 ‘After Image’ - 7x04 ‘Take Me Out to the Holosuite’ - 7x05 ‘The Siege of AR-558’ - 7x15 ‘Badda-Bing Badda-Bang’
And you didn’t ask these but I’ll tell ya
Favorite Whole Season: SEASON 4, omg Season 4, are u kidding me S4
Favorite Writer: Ron Moore, followed by my guy Robert Hewitt Wolfe
Favorite Director: Michael Dorn definitely. All three episodes he directed appear in this post – a perfect batting average.
[Masterpost of Tarra Treks Through DS9 because crosslinking all of this seemed ridiculous]
