To be clear, I don't hold DS9 as the best of Star Trek or think all its deconstructing woked, but from what I remember, the "easy to be saint in paradise" is more about criticizing the arrogance and borderline xenophobia of Gene's vision, or at least aspects of it and (which DS9 did as a whole) contrivences that kept it unchallenged. If nothing else, IMO it's a fair game to show that a society as dedicated to peace and avoidance of armed conflict would leave some people feeling unfought for.

“It’s easy to be a saint in paradise” is in fact in reference to the Maquis, and Starfleet’s treatment thereof. The official judgement of the Federation is that the Maquis are terrorists (a matter of perspective), a threat to the peace with the Cardassians (potentially, but certainly not more so than the Cardassians themselves), and deserters and thieves (absolutely fact; a majority of Maquis are active duty Starfleet who walked off the job with Starfleet weapons, ships and intel). Thus the Starfleet policy toward Maquis is pursuit, capture, or destruction without quarter.

Sisko cheerfully enforces this policy - he literally committed a war crime in order to catch his former security officer, so he’s obviously on board with “stop the Maquis” as a concept - but he also takes a moment to be judgey about it when the issue first comes up. The people at Starfleet headquarters, he implies with the quote, are arrogant, ignorant, and cold. The Maquis had their homes traded away right underneath them by the Federation, traded to the very enemy who was attacking them in the first place. Even worse, the Feds didn’t even really make an effort in the war - consensus among the sort of fans who Figure Out Things Like That is that if they’d tried at all, Starfleet would have crushed the Cardassians and lost nothing. And now the Federation attacks its own betrayed citizens for fighting back? Sisko, and apparently the show, want us to consider that perhaps the Liberal Elite in their Ivory Towers pushing Peace and Reconciliation with the Bad Guys even to the point of punishing the former Good Guys to maintain it are showing a disgusting lack of 1) compassion for the people they’re supposed to be prioritizing, who suffer the consequences of their decisions and 2) understanding of how the Real World works, because they’ve never lived in it.

Unfortunately, this is patent fucking nonsense.

Consider:

Were Hiroshima and Nagasaki a war crime?

Really?

Even though the Japanese were the aggressor? Even though they committed absolute atrocities against American citizens in the Pacific territories? Even though Truman’s literal job description was “protect American lives and American interests,” meaning he owed his soldiers a strategy that risked their lives as little as possible and ended the war as quickly as possible, and owed the Japanese absolutely nothing? If you’re still out here saying “yes,” congratulations, you’re what Gene’s humanity is supposed to be all about. Someone who remembers that the enemy is still people too, and you have a moral obligation to use exactly necessary force and not a single Newton more. To value their lives, society and culture equal to your own.

If the Federation negotiated peace with the Cardassians even from a position of power, it was because they deemed the potential loss of combined Federation and Cardassian life to be of greater significance than the (easily substituted in a post-scarcity society) homestead rights of Federation citizens on those contested worlds. They chose life over land, even enemy life over their own land. This is the decision we want them to make. We want them to be the people who would not have dropped a nuke on Japan. We want future humanity to be in a place where we consider the Maquis to be in the wrong for choosing bloody war to avoid giving up property.

But the thing is…. how the fuck do we get there, because humans do not, humans cannot make that decision. Humans get emotionally invested in things. Humans get angry and scared and humans are wildly fucking tribal and we make self-serving and short-sighted decisions in order to protect the things that are ours whenever we feel threatened. Poverty creates crime because when people are scared for their survival they don’t care about the rules, strange cultures interacting generates bigotry because new things are frightening, and power breeds sociopathy because losing that power frames itself to the human brain as a loss of identity and safety. And Gene’s humans are not actually different from the real ones. They didn’t develop telepathy like Betazoids to make them physically incapable of forgetting that the enemy is a person. They haven’t altered their own brain chemistry through ritualized philosophy like the Vulcans. They are still giant bags of reactivity, violence and malice. So. What do?

Well the really funny thing is that the answer to this question is within DS-9 itself. One of fandom’s other favorite lines from the series is Quark musing on the nature of humanity:

Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They’re a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people… will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon.

WELL JUST FUCKING INVERSE THAT, GENIUS!

DS-9 is fascinated by the idea that humans are Not As Good As You Thought, Gene, but it seems to persistently overlook the fact that he understood that completely, and that’s why the Federation exists. That’s why they have the free holosuites and free food and Fully Automated Luxury Gay Space Communism. It is easy to be a saint in Paradise, and the Federation wants to be saints, so they put the people who make the decisions in Paradise. Hell, they try to put everyone in Paradise, because it lets us not be massive shits to each other even without telepathy or Logic™. The whole origin story of Trek humans is that they went through a decade or so of Mad Max hell and went “holy fuck never again, what do we do to make ourselves stop being assholes,” and utopian socialist paradise is what they came up with.

Sisko seems to think that not getting on board with the Maquis’ decision to fight for their homes is a sign of blindness and elitism on the part of his bosses, because those bosses aren’t facing the tribulation of losing their own homes. But in fact, that very tribulation means that the Maquis are the blind ones - they can’t be objective or adhere to the principles they normally value, because their lizard brain has knocked all the way down Maslow’s hierarchy to “YOU NO TAKE CANDLE,” while the guys back home on Earth, explicitly because they’re not involved, can act from the top of the pyramid with compassion for all involved parties.

Now, you can disagree with this moral perspective, certainly. You can say that leaders have a greater responsibility to their people than to the enemy and that protecting homes is worth lives and that the Federation should be secretly supporting the Maquis (like the Cardassians are supporting their own “renegades” attacking Federation colonies, something the series really should have spent more time on), and you wouldn’t be wrong. These are matters of perspective, not absolute truth. But that isn’t the argument Sisko is making. He’s arguing that the froofy safe Feds just don’t ~get~ it, which is a shockingly limited understanding of the history and principles of Trek Earth’s culture for a Starfleet captain.

Dark SWTOR predictions

From my most recent post on SWTOR, I made a few predictions in the comments. Since I have been right about things in the past, I thought I’d leave these here and see if any of them come to pass in the game.  I’ll be honest: I hope most of them don’t.  This isn’t based on datamining, just my own conjecture as to what they may be setting up in the game.  Obviously, spoilers for Onslaught. 

1. We will be able to convince Arn to leave the Jedi and/or become DS.  

They already have set this up. There are a few dialogue choices where you can remind Arn that he can be great without being a Jedi. You can back him up when he slaughters the Brothers, which seems to be an Anakin-murdering-the-Sand-People moment where he completely breaks. There's this email from Arn, too. As well as one from Lana where she says he has...potential. It's coming.

I’m not sure how to deal with that anger. Part of me is still glad I cut so many of them down, but Tau keeps telling me there are better ways, that letting rage control me can only lead to the dark side. But if I have this power- if I can stop them - then why should I hold back? On some level, I do feel like what I did was wrong, but I don’t feel any empathy for those slavers. The road to becoming a Jedi feels longer than it ever has now. 

2. Tau and Lana might have a fight to the death. 

Tau hates the Sith and mentions this constantly. She doesn't seem happy to see Lana. Lana has trolled her more than once. If Tau finds out that the Republic PC is a saboteur and Lana has been helping? She's going to want to kill Lana, and she's going to try.   3. Theron might leave.   Theron gets very upset if the Imperial PC makes certain choices, and walks off at the cantina after Onslaught’s events. He walks off when he finds out the Republic PC is a saboteur. He sends an upset email when Gnost-Dural is killed. He also sends Republic PCs a letter where he's happily talking about killing Sith. He's not happy unless the PC is Republic and in total sync with their goals, and I think this discontent is going to grow.   4. Lana might leave.   Lana hasn't shown as much open dissent, but she does tell the PC that she is relieved if they don't hook up with the Republic or Empire. Especially the Republic. I think she will go along with a PC's choices if they remain Imperial, but I think that if the player is Republic-aligned, she's only going to work well with saboteurs after a while. There was a tweet from Charles Boyd a while back where he said that Lana will leave if the PC commits war crimes against the Empire. I think this is true. Even if Lana is pragmatic I can't see her accepting the Republic's desire to exterminate the Sith and the DS.   5. Theron might be a plague victim.   Okay, explanation. I really think that Theron survives even if you leave him to die on Nathema. There's that cut to an image of Satele Shan looking angry. If Theron can survive long enough to get all the way back to Odessen, which on the map is literally across the galaxy from Nathema, I think he could survive long enough for Satele to get there and pick him up. Aaaaand we know where Satlee is now.   And if Theron was asked to leave, I think this could happen too. Theron might have wanted to help his mother, and...yeah.

6. Killing Satele might be a deal breaker for Theron.   If Theron is still with the Alliance, if there is a kill option for Satele Shan, I think that might be a deal breaker for him. Especially if the PC sided Imperial on Iokath and Jace Malcom died.   7. Satele Shan will have a kill option.   Scourge pretty much says this after Onslaught. Either you're going to cure the plague or destroy it. Which would mean...blowing up the ship with all the plague victims. Damn you Bioware, can we not keep anyone alive?!   8. You might only get to keep one of Kira and Scourge unless you're a JK.   I think alignment/actions/faction may determine which of these two sticks around after the Tenebrae Plague storyline.   9. Companions will rebel against the PC.   Remember that bug where your companions attacked you within the Odessen base? I think that maaaay have been a bit of coding that accidentally got released too early.   We know that canonically, many the companions from the opposing faction have already left, since you get those goodbye letters after Ossus. But not all of them did. And if you're a saboteur, your original faction's companions have remained, believing that you're still on the same side.   When the truth of the saboteur's status comes out, and I think it will? If the PC does something especially heinous to the other side? I think some of those remaining companions are going to freak the fuck out, and it's not going to be pretty. I'm sitting here imagining Elara Dorne and Fourex finding out that a Trooper is sabotaging the Republic. As I said before I really think they'd blow up the base.   I also think some romantic companions will break up with the PC when they learn of saboteur plans. I can't envision DS Jaesa staying with someone supporting the Republic or Kira remaining with a saboteur. I think Theron might be hurt enough to leave if you are a saboteur and chose not to tell him, too. 10. The factions will continue to encroach on the base, until the Alliance is basically occupied.  They have set this up, too. There are flags all over the base even if you chose to remain independent. The faction heads cheerfully tell you they’ve brought ships. Um. Odessen isn’t going to be yours anymore, is it? That would be another broken promise from Bioware - I don’t know why they even gave the illusion of choice, of staying independent, if they didn’t intend to follow through. That’s how it seems right now, though.

Why I am a former Republican

The Christianity Today editorial by Mark Galli has stirred up folks amid Big Evangelicalism--the Christian leaders often connected to the President. No matter if it is Franklin Graham, Tony Perkins, Richard Land, JFJr., Robert Jeffress, Eric Metaxas, or others, each makes the mistake of contending we have just two choices--the standard R or D--in any election for POTUS.

None of them, that I have seen, have responded to John Piper, who said the following the Sunday before election 2016:

“The right to vote in America is not a binding duty (without regard to other factors) for Christians in every election.

“’The children are free.’ ” We are free from human institutions. As citizens of heaven, we are not bound in every situation to participate in the processes of human government. This is not our homeland. We vote — if we vote — because the Lord of our homeland commissions us to vote. And he does not absolutize this act above all other considerations of Christian witness.

“In this election, with the flagrant wickedness of both party candidates, the logic that moves from “Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution” (1 Peter 2:13) to the necessity — the binding duty — of voting, has lost sight of three things:

--the radical meaning of the words, “for the Lord’s sake,” and how it relativizes all human authority and how it brings to bear many other considerations;

--the radical freedom of the children of God from the inherent authority of human institutions like government; and

--the aim of every citizen of heaven in all human engagements to display our allegiance to the values of another world.

“I am not saying we are bound not to vote. I am saying that the children of God are free to hear the voice of their Master about how to best witness to his supremacy. . . .”

I turned 18 in the latter part of the Reagan Administration: 1986. My first Presidential election was 1988. I had voted for the Republican nominee each time. And yes, there were times I believed I had to settle for "the lesser of two evils" because, after all, isn't that how Christians are conditioned to accept political reality? A seat at the table. Get whatever influence you can. Always engage in the left-wing-right-wing banter. Any fighting is winning. I subscribed to all of it.

Sometime after election 2012, I began critically examining what the GOP had been feeding me for nearly 30 years as a voter. The GOP tells Christians they are the party of a strong national defense, lower taxes, expanding liberty, strong families, and the party that would bring the federal leviathan under control, not to mention judicial appointments that will stand for the rule of law.. And this is where they also promote themselves as being pro-life.

"You can trust us," we are repeatedly told.

Unfortunately, their rhetoric and actions are too often polar opposites. "Talk is cheap," as the saying goes. We see several things happening over time, but they accelerated after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Prior to 9-11-01, we had former President George HW Bush get crushed politically by his failure to follow through on a tax cut. Remember, "Read my lips. No new taxes"? We also had Reagan high court appointees Sandra Day O'Connor and Anthony Kennedy relish in their swing-vote roles, frequently acting activist, not defending the Constitution's plain simple language. Kennedy emerged as a nominee after Robert Bork's character assassination by the late U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy.

When the GOP emerged with the Contract for America in 1994, it seemed as if Republicans genuinely cared that their word was their bond. It did not last, however. After the terrorist attacks in NYC and DC, we witnessed genuine assaults on liberty and freedom, and it is accelerating. 

The following are just a partial list of the grievances I have with the GOP, which compelled me to become a former Republican (I will never be a Democrat.) within the past 5 years:

During the Bush 43 administration (I voted for him in 2000 and 2004), the GOP passed Medicare Part D, which launched the feds further into healthcare policy. The government doesn't do much very well, let alone thinking it's smart and benevolent enough to regulate medicine and healthcare for seniors. The Bush 43 administration also gave us No Child Left Behind, which was the federal government sticking its nose further and further into education policy. The more the feds mandate, the less power that exists for local school boards and parents. Republicans should know this, but they "had to do something."

The Patriot Act that emerged from the Bush 43 administration following the terrorist attacks has been one of the most significant assaults on liberty and an ability to live without the government intruding on American citizens. It could very well be the most tyrannical piece of legislation passed in American history. It has been tweaked here and there, but nearly two decades later it has survived as the NSA and other federal agencies monitor the phone calls and emails of Americans, complete with the assistance of corporate America. The passage and reauthorization of The Patriot Act (there are some in Congress who consistently vote against its reauthorization) is perhaps the clearest sign the GOP has no problem with tyranny triumphing over liberty and freedom. It is inexcusable.  And just because the government hasn't called me in for questioning doesn't make it right or just.

Nation building--The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq compelled us to eventually engage in nation building, which is not the role or function of the US military. We have spent trillions of dollars in both nations. A recent Washington Post investigative piece revealed billions--or perhaps more--of American dollars lost on corruption in Afghanistan and political promises from three administrations--Bush 43, Obama, and Trump (notice that wonderful bipartisanship)--that was just hot air. I was initially in favor of both wars. As time has passed I have come to a hard conclusion: no amount of force can compel folks to prefer freedom and self-government if they have no idea what it will mean to sustain it. I believe freedom and self-government require a knowledge and acceptance of spiritual truth because our founders warned us that to keep the system we had would require people living by biblical principles. We are imposing this on Muslims, who do not believe the Bible. As much as I was moved by women voting in both countries, Islam will not allow freedom and self-government to be sustained. PS. I am not a neocon and do not believe we should be finding places to engage in warfare. Many neocons have their sights set on Iran. That would be a disaster. PSS I do believe the US should be actively engaged in defending persecuted religious minorities and insisting other countries protect those folks. Religious freedom either is a priority or it isn't. This s determined by actions, not rhetoric.

Department of Homeland Security--A new federal agency behemoth--DHS--surfaced as an expansion of the federal government after the terrorist attacks. Again, Republicans had no problem expanding government.

National Debt--The National Debt, which is now $23 trillion and climbing, has been doubling every 10 years since Bush 43. Note that we grew government (DHS) and funded two wars on a credit card. And of course President Obama grew government with ObamaCare. When is Big Evangelicalism (I remember JFJr. said Trump was needed to get the debt under control. Trump is spending like Barack Obama.) going to start treating the national debt like the moral issue that it is? We are stealing from future generations of Americans. Worse, the more both parties kick the can down the road, the options they will have when something is forced upon them will be extremely limited. And this doesn't account for all of the unfunded liabilities, which some estimate to be . . . $122 trillion. This. Is. Not. Sustainable.

Lack of transparency in budgeting and legislation--The leadership of both parties love to use Omnibus spending bills just before the Christmas recess to justify the crafting of bills behind closed doors, with little, if any, ability to amend these bills. Additionally, there's no ability for any member of the House or Senate to read the details of these spending bills that typically arrive in a late afternoon and they have less than 24 hours to read over 2,000 pages. Th Rs and Ds actually expect members of the House and Senate to just line up and vote and not consider the details of which they vote. It's tyrannical. The spending of money this way ensures no accountability. Taxpayers learn about the stupid ideas later. Why can't they have an honest debate and siphon the garbage out of these bills? That makes too much sense.

Planned Parenthood/Abortion--There has been more rhetoric from the Republican party attached to this issue and the premier organization promoting infanticide than any other issue. The dirty little secret is most of the "changes" coming from DC surface as executive orders that a Democrat will change with the stroke of a pen. Kermit Gosnell commits his crimes in PA and there's nothing that surfaces mandating inspections of abortion clinics. PP is caught on film bragging about the harvesting of organs from aborted babies and the GOP does nothing. No prosecution of the guilty. No accountability, Nothing. Yes, PP opted out of Title X funding when the Trump administration changed rule (this was a very good thing). But PP still gets hundreds of millions of dollars off American taxpayers for killing babies. The GOP has threatened de-funding PP multiple times. They never follow through on the threats. They are all bark and no bite.

Former President Obama and others perpetuate the lie that administration was "scandal free." Fast and Furious. The IRS weaponized to go after political opponents of President Obama. The rollout of ObamaCare. Benghazi. All we ever received from Republicans were congressional hearings that allowed members of the House or Senate to play to the cameras of C-SPAN and others This is not accountability. The lack of accountability flourishes all across the three branches of government.

Judges--The Trump administration has now put its stamp on the lower federal courts. This is a good thing. But I would remind everyone who utters the phrases, "But Gorsuch." or "But Kavanaugh." that judges are bound to make a lousy decision. When they do what will happen to the high court argument regarding judicial appointments?  Additionally, all of this attention on the courts leaves me wondering is this the new fail safe for losing the White House or Congress? "At least we can rely on the courts." Can we?

I do vote for Republicans at the local and state levels. 

I have been challenged by Exodus 18:21 where Jethro instructs Moses on the attributes to seek for judges for the growing Israelite population. There are four requirements: able men who fear God, men of truth, and men who hate dishonest gain. The argument is this is a group of people who were not elected and it automatically ignores women. Really? Are you really going to suggest these four attributes don't apply to the 21st century for Americans seeking character traits of elected officials? How myopic and insulting. Yes, even women can possess these traits.

Christians have been aiding and abetting the dumbing down of the American electoral process. We should, can, and must be better. We owe our allegiance to the King not of this world, yet our rhetoric in America reveals something very, very different.

Vagua’s ship is called the “Ardent Plague”. In my head it’s like 8x bigger than it is in the game and can hold a much larger amount of hooligans.

ooohhh boy. she’s definitely not the type to follow anyone around and do what they say so this is kind of a hard question. she’d definitely not be for any light side classes, that’s for sure. 

I’d say she’d probably work best for bounty hunter?

Her story would involve using you while she lays low and “shelters herself” (hides) from rivals, probably recovering from a botched ghost-eating ritual. Missions would mostly entail her trying to kill you in various ways or use you for her own gain. i’d imagine a mission to roughly go like:

Vagua: Your ship is a cesspool of filth and grime, just thought I’d let you know. Oh, by the way, one of my connections has located an ancient sith relic on Taris. The ritual to take it requires two people, so I thought I’d lower myself enough to ask you. Naturally the relic of no use to you but, [insert treasure hunter with a bounty on them] wants it, and I assume you’d want their head as well as an expensive evil sith rock?”

*the mission entails collecting the bounty on the treasure hunter, but also is just Vagua trying to feed you to the soul-sucking sith artifact to get more power out of it*

[player]: you tried to kill me!

Vagua: Oh don’t pout, hunter. It just wanted your life force because it knows you’re…erm…strong. So take it as a complement and not as a deviously planned act of betrayal. :)

She would not be romancable, but improving your relationship with her would mean she’d attempt to kill you less, and would instead use you for better things. Like taking down rival sith and emptying their bank accounts or something.

9. if time travel existed and they were thrown into the prequel/original/sequel trilogy, how would they react?

in the prequels, she’d probably laugh at how mediocre palpatine is (when compared to the overpowered planet-destroying-ghost-eating sith she’s used to) and would have a 50/50 chance of killing him and taking maul to be her new plaything (weapon), or just lurking and just meddling with palpy’s galactic takeover. if she did successfully beat him, she’d probably start a new sith order. wouldn’t have killed all the jedi or anything. just restored sith to their former glory and all that good stuff. no more rule of two. bleh. would definitely want to meet a nightsister.

original trilogy would probably just mean she lurks and as usual, causes drama for both sides of the current conflict. would probably lay low as a masked bounty hunter or something.

sequels would probably entail her kicking kylos ass and showing him what real sith power is. also kicking the first order’s ass and conquering some planets, remaking the empire. but she’d hand it off to someone else because politics are boring, and she’d just continue her days being a pain in the senate’s side.

this could go in really different directions, since in my head, she defects and joins the republic. so pretty much any pub class would work, but I’m favoring trooper rn.

her story would entail having the player character be given the task of keeping tabs on her, as she’s freshly defected and isn’t trustworthy. she eventually gives out some vital information, and for reasons, she winds up having to join you in the field and prove her worth. from that point, she’d join you as a companion.

her missions would usually involve having imperial spies or assassins come for her in one way or another, and would wind up with the player letting her leave, or helping her out by stopping the imps.

minu: so, I know this sounds bad, but I think I might’ve spotted an imperial assassin following us while we were doing our business on [insert planet here]. You’re a bit too plain…I mean, not a huge target. So I think she was after…me?

Anyway, not good. Not at all good and I think I should probably go. Not forever, just long enough to make it look like you were just chaperoning me to my next location, rather than that I’m living in your ship. Don’t want you to be a target, hehe. That was nervous laughter, by the way.

*player can either choose to let her go [neutral], tell her that she’s being paranoid and to shut up [DS], or offer to help find and stop the assassin [LS].*

If the assassin is taken down, or she is allowed to leave, the convo would go:

she’d be romancable, but would be a lot easier for femme players to romance. she’d also gain affection suuuuper easily with gifts.

While pissed, Cziqe called it the  “SS I Don’t Give a Damn”. The name stuck, so that’s what the crew calls it. He just calls it his ship.

he would be the most scathingly mean companion and it would probably take the max amount of affection for him to even THINK of being remotely nice to you. I can’t even think of a reason why he’d want to follow anyone around or leave his ship. but if he did, most of his missions would be like.

in all of those time periods, he’d wind up being a crime lord (maul-style when he had everyone working for him in clone wars) and would be generally feared by both sides of whatever conflict. he’d only side with the republic/rebels/whatever because they’re a bit more lax when it comes to pardoning people and turning a blind eye to his crimes in favor of the supplies he can offer.

The Halcyon (season 1) – Starring Sope Dirisu (Humans, Black Mirror) as Sonny Sullivan, The Halcyon is a new series which tells the story of a bustling and stylish five star hotel at the centre of London society and a world at war. Secrets and scandal abound as spies and aristocrats rub shoulders with poor staff in lavish surroundings.

The show’s first episode aired on Monday, January 2nd, and first reactions are positive, describing it as ‘Downton Abbey in a hotel!‘ – The Guardian. The Halcyon also promises, honest diversity, rather than tokenism!

Dirisu’s character Sonny is interested in lead character Betsey (Kara Tointon) – who sings with his band, but she’s not noticed yet.

Unforgotten  (season 2) – Starring Sanjeev Bhaskar (Goodness Gracious Me, The Kumars at No. 42) the second series will feature a brand new story from creator and writer Chris Lang who once again explores the fallout from the investigation into an historic murder case.

The story begins with the discovery of a body. This time the perfectly preserved remains of a middle aged man found in a sealed suitcase in the silt of the River Lea in northeast London. As Cassie and Sunny begin the complicated task of trying to identify the victim, we will meet four unconnected people who we suspect are linked in some way to the victim.

Death In Paradise (season 6) – Starring Danny John-Jules as Officer Dwayne Myers, Josephine Jobert as DS Florence Cassell and Tobi Bakare as Officer JP Hooper the new eight-part series sees the return of Saint Marie’s crime-fighting police team, headed up by DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall), alongside DS Florence Cassell (Jobert), Office Dwayne Myers (John-Jules) and Officer JP Hooper (Bakare). Set on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie and filmed in Guadeloupe, the sixth series of the successful winter warmer will see the Honoré Police team head to London for the first time to solve one of the island’s most complex murder cases in an unprecedented two-part special.

Discussing the London-based episodes, executive producer of Death In Paradise, Tim Key, says: “We are very excited to be bringing Death In Paradise to London for the very first time. Humphrey has always been a fish out of water in Saint Marie, adjusting to the island’s ways and customs, but for the scenes set in London, the roles are reversed as he is back in his hometown, giving an opportunity to explore the characters that viewers know and love against a new backdrop.”

Other names announced to feature in the upcoming series include Ramon Tikaram (Happy Valley), Gary Beadle (Eastenders) and Kemi-Bo Jacobs (Thirteen).

Death in Paradise airs Thursday 5th January, 9pm on BBC One.

Lip Sync Battle (season 2) – Presented with Mel B alongside Professor Green, Lip Sync Battle UK is based on the pop culture phenomenon of lip syncing along to popular songs and putting a performance together, without actually singing any of the words. Two well-known celebrities are challenged to go head-to-head with show stopping routines of smash hit songs.

LA-based Mel B will be flying into London to film the series, following a busy year as a judge on America’s Got Talent and juggling life as a working mum. Mel B said: “I’m looking forward to being back in the UK for the second series of Lip Sync Battle UK. We had so much fun filming the last series; some of the performances still have me in stitches. Who will take to the stage this time around? I can’t wait to see!”

Lip Sync Battle airs Friday 6th January, 10pm on Channel 5. A Christmas special will air in December.

Falling Water (season 1) – Starring David Ajala (Beowulf) is a supernatural drama about an intersection between reality and unconscious thought. Three unrelated people, slowly realise that they are dreaming separate parts of a single common dream. Each is on a quest for something that can only be found in their subconscious.  However, the more they begin to use the dream world as a tool to advance their hidden agendas they realise that their visions are trying to tell them something more, and that their very real lives are at stake.

David Ajala stars as Burton, whose character is described as an ex-British Army SAS Burton who is now a “fixer” for a large multinational investment bank known as The Firm. Meticulous and controlled by nature, driven by logic and concrete knowledge, when his lover, the mysterious Woman in Red vanishes without a trace — as if she never existed at all — Burton begins to question his sanity.

Season 1 of Falling Water airs Sunday 15th January via Amazon Prime Instant Video

Fortitude (season 2) – Starring Gershwyn Eustache Jnr (Starred Up, Legends), Steve Toussaint (Midsomer Murders, Inspector Lewis) and Parminder Nagra (The Blacklist, ER),  is a British psychological thriller television series created and written by Simon Donald. The series is set in the fictional Arctic Norwegian settlement of Fortitude.

The new series kicks off when a fresh murder rocks the locals plunging the tight-knit community into turmoil. Character details along with the actual plot have been kept tightly under wraps.

Fortitude, Season 2 airs Thursday 26th January, 10:00pm on Sky Atlantic

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (season 2b) – stars Franz Drameh (Attack the Block, Edge of Tomorrow) as Jay ‘Firestorm’ Davidson.

The second half of the second series continues to focus on time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter who brought together a disparate group of DC’s finest heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat. After the defeat of the immortal villain Vandal Savage and the exposure of the corrupt Time Masters, a new threat emerges for the heroic Legends in Series 2.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season 2’s second half unconfirmed air date Thursday 2nd February, 8pm on Sky 1.

The Walking Dead (season 7b) – Starring Lennie James (Critical, Get On Up) as Morgan Jones the second half of  season 7 of The Walking Dead will continue to follow the survivors of the world ending zombie apocalypse.

Up until this point, the survivors have lived through conflicts… Disease, hunger, scores of the undead, tragedy, betrayal, and unthinkable loss. Through this, they’ve become formidable. Powerful. Unstoppable. To start Season 7, that power is taken away. They had found safety and stability. They had created a home. They thought the world was theirs. They thought they knew the world. They were wrong. The first half of Season 7 sees the group fractured, broken, bereaved, and picking up the pieces while living under the thumb of oppression. Negan will have successfully brought the survivors under his control, brutally convincing them to live under his rules with a deadly and horrific example of what happens if they don’t.

Other characters are unaware of what’s happened, but have become separated from the group either by incident or choice — they will learn that they can’t escape this new turn of their world, either. This half season is about these characters starting over. The overall theme of the season is beginning again. The world isn’t what they thought it was. It’s bigger and it’s even more dangerous.

The Walking Dead’s season 7’s second half airs Monday 13th February, 9:00pm on Fox UK.

24: Legacy (season 1) – Starring Ashley Thomas is the next evolution of the Emmy Award-winning, 24.

24: Legacy chronicles an adrenaline-fueled race against the clock to stop a devastating terrorist attack on United States soil – in the same real-time format that has propelled this genre-defining series. Emerald City takes a fresh look at the legendary story of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz with a dramatic re-imagining of the classic story, bringing it up to date with spectacular costumes, high production values and detailed sets.

iZombie  (season 3) – Starring Rahul Kohli (Gangsters Gamblers Geezers, EastEnders) the dramedy series from the creators of Veronica Mars is about Olivia “Liv�� Moore a medical resident who died and woke up as a zombie. As a result, at least once a month, she must feed on brains to survive. She takes a job at the King County Medical Examiner’s Office in order to have access to the brains she needs. With each brain eaten, she absorbs new memories and traits. She then begins to solve the deaths of the victims whose brains she’s eaten.

Kohli plays co-lead Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti. Ravi is a Medical Examiner with the King County Medical Examiner’s Office. He also becomes Liv’s friend, partner, and confidante, and their relationship is a mutually-beneficial, yet unlikely, friendship that proves to be as solid as they come.

iZombie season 3 is scheduled to air in the US, Tuesday 4th of April 2017, 8pm via The CW.

Series 1 & 2 are currently available in the UK via Netflix. Season 3 has yet to be confirmed but we expect it to be quite near to the US air date.

Sick Note (season 1) – Starring Pippa Bennett-Warner (Wakefield, Doctor Who) is new comedy also staring Rupert Grint (Harry Potter franchise), Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) and Don Johnson (Miami Vice – the original and legendary series about how desperate a person’s actions can become when a lie starts to spiral out of control.

Daniel Glass (Grint), is a compulsive liar, who’s stuck in a failing relationship and a dead-end job, where he is under the thumb of his irrepressible boss Kenny West (Johnson). Just when things couldn’t get any worse, he’s diagnosed with esophageal cancer. However, everyone starts to treat him better because of his diagnosis and suddenly Daniel finds he has a new lust for life. But then he finds out he was misdiagnosed by the most incompetent oncologist on Earth, Dr. Ian Glennis (Frost) and that’s when Daniel has a big decision to make – come clean and go back to his old rubbish life, or keep this new information a secret and pretend to be ill. He decides to go for the latter but very quickly the lie spirals out of control and both Daniel and Dr. Glennis have to spend all of their waking lives trying to prevent the truth from getting out.

Joining the cast will also be Tolu Ogunmefun (Don’t Jealous Me, The T-Boy Show) and Ronke Adekoluejo (NW, Chewing Gum).

Broadchurch (season 3) – Guest starring Sir Lenny Henry and BAFTA award winning Georgina Campbell (My Murder) Georgina Campbell the third and final series of the drama will see David Tennant and Olivia Colman return as DI Alex Hardy and DS Ellie Miller.

The detectives will reunite to investigate a serious sexual assault. The series explores the consequences of a serious sexual assault as a Dorset community comes under the scrutiny of Hardy and Miller’s investigation. Based on a year of research with Dorset-based organisations who specialise in dealing with victims of sexual assault, and police advisors who specialise in investigating crimes of sexual violence, Broadchurch’s final chapter looks at the emotional cost to all of those involved and the irreparable damage to friendships and relationships.

Broadchurch, Season 3 returns to ITV, February 2017.

Britannia (season 1) – Starring Gershwyn Eustache Jnr (Second Coming, Legends) as Vitus and Aaron Pierre (Prime Suspect 1973) as Antonius is a 10-part drama set in 43AD as the Roman Imperial Army – determined and terrified in equal measure – returns to crush the Celtic heart of Britannia – a mysterious land ruled by wild warrior women and powerful druids who can channel the powerful forces of the underworld.

Britannia has no current air date but is scheduled to air in the UK and Ireland on Sky Atlantic and will be available on Amazon Prime Video in the US in 2017.

The Carters Get Rich (season 1) – Starring Rashan Stone (Horrible Histories, Strike Back), Rio Chambers (The Storyteller) and Rhianna Merralls (Camping) follows  11 year old Harry Carter (Chambers) who creates HONC, an app for geeky kids like him who struggle to talk to girls. As it fast becomes the next big thing in the social networking world, it gets snapped up by American billionaire Trent Zebriski (James Van Der Beek – Dawson’s Creek) for 10 million, turning the working-class Carter family, including Harry’s dad Tony (Stone), mum Liz (Kerry Godliman) and sister Ellie (Merralls), into overnight multi-millionaires. However, their new-found wealth proves tricky for the humble Carters to handle.

Carters Get Rich is a comedy for all the family: a warm and witty look at a modern household battling to hold onto their rags in the face of corrupting riches.

The Carters Get Rich has no current air date but is scheduled to air this year on Sky 1.

Guerrilla (season 1) – Starring Idris Elba (Luther, Beasts of No Nation), Wunmi Mosaku (Dancing on the Edge, Black Mirror), Zawe Ashton (Fresh Meat, Not Safe For Work), Frieda Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire, Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Babou Ceesay (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Damilola: Our Loved Boy) Academy Award winner John Ridley (American Crime, 12 Years a Slave) will write, direct and executive produce the new 6-part.

Guerrilla is a love story set against the backdrop of one of the most politically explosive times in UK history. It tells the story of a politically active couple whose relationship and values are tested when they liberate a political prisoner and form a radical underground cell in 1970s London. Their ultimate target becomes the Black Power Desk, a true-life, secretive counter-intelligence unit within Special Branch dedicated to crushing all forms of black activism.

Whilst the series is set against a background of social and political activism, at its heart Guerrilla is about a relationship under pressure, and the reality that for any couple there comes a point when the choices they make have real and lasting consequences.

Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild® Award winner Idris Elba will co-star and serve as an executive producer through his Green Door Pictures. Ridley will write the majority of the episodes and will direct the first two.

Top Gear (season 24) – co-hosted with Rory Reid, who returns with Matt LeBlanc and Chris Harris will be without Chris Evans.

After the popular car show lost its original presenters Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond amidst much controversy, the show relaunched with BBC radio presenter Chris Evans. Evans announced he wouldn’t be returning, but former Friends star Matt LeBlanc has confirmed his return. LeBlanc will be joined by Chris Harris and Rory Reid with regular appearances from Eddie Jordan, Sabine Schmitz and The Stig.

Rory Reid won his position as presenter after an open audition call was put out. He was a motor journalist giving reviews of cars via his YouTube channel.

Top Gear, season 24 has no current air date but is scheduled to air this year on BBC Two.

Hyperallergic: A Cinematographer’s Documentary About Making Documentaries

Kirsten Johnson has worked as a cinematographer and camera operator for documentary films for more than two decades. She’s lensed for the likes of Barbara Kopple, Michael Moore, Laura Poitras, and Kirby Dick, and their projects have taken her all over the world, including many war-torn regions. A film about two Afghan girls she had met during her travels evolved into The Blind Eye (2013), a collage of violent images she’d captured during her career. With the help of fellow documentary cinematographer Nels Bangerter, she shaped this “Trauma Cut” into a quieter, more meditative reflection on her art. The result was Cameraperson, a filmmaker’s memoir constructed from footage Johnson had shot for various docs. Since its premiere at the 2016 Sundance film Festival, the film has won tremendous acclaim, including a quick induction in the Criterion Collection. In conjunction with the film’s upcoming television premiere on POV, Daniel Schindel talked to Johnson over the phone about how her experiences gradually shaped Cameraperson into its final form.

Daniel Schindel: Your statement on the film lists a series of challenges a documentary photographer faces in the moment of filming. Among these troubles are when you follow stories a director does not need and when you’re not following the ones they want. How independent is a cinematographer during the production of a documentary?

Kirsten Johnson: As with all of this, it is completely dependent on the director. There are situations in which the director is right there with you all the time, and there are situations in which you are completely alone or with the sound person in a space. This can be for reasons that have to do with time constraints, or because the director needs to be doing something else simultaneously. There are these triangulations that happen — the more people are in a space, the more complicated it gets for the people being filmed.

But I’ve certainly had many experiences in which I end up following someone and there’s no way the director can even keep up. They end up doing something else while you’re down the road with someone and something’s happened to them, and you’re the only one there and are deciding whether you continue to film or not. Hopefully, you’re thinking what the director is hoping for, and know what story you’re following together. But sometimes, without even realizing it, you’ve got a completely different interpretation of what they wanted.

DS: Who’s a director you’ve worked with who is with you all the time? Who’s a director who’s given you more freedom? And what’s an example of a time when you followed something which the director didn’t intend, where your visions were different?

KJ: Barbara Kopple is definitely someone who gets you access to a place and then you have a huge amount of freedom within that situation. I was about to say that Laura Poitras is someone who’s with you all the time, but in fact she asked me to go to Guantanamo Bay while she was in Yemen. So she’s the kind of director who will be with you if she can, but based on your relationship and trust, she’ll also let you be on your own without them.

With the Bosnian family featured in Cameraperson, it was very clear to the director that they weren’t people we were going to follow, but I didn’t know that and kept filming them picking blueberries high up on a mountain. I think the director had determined right away that it wasn’t going to be in the movie, but I just got led off to this world and fell in love with the family and with filming them. I believe they didn’t even translate any of the original footage. So clear was the director’s knowledge that this didn’t fit into the context of the film, but we’d driven halfway up this mountain and were going to be there til sunset anyway, so she let me go.

DS: Was there any footage you wanted but weren’t able to find, or couldn’t get permission to use?

KJ: There was so much I wasn’t able to find. In the case of a film like Darfur Now, Warner Independent had ceased to exist, so that footage was very complicated and limited. There are also agreements that are struck between directors and the people who are filmed, that “This is off-limits” or “This can only be used in this context.” Incredibly, Michael Moore said I could use literally anything I had ever shot for him without his oversight, which was impressive to me in its generosity.

DS: What’s something you remembered recording which you wanted to use but couldn’t?

KJ: We had filmed the president of Sudan, who is now accused of war crimes, at the wedding of someone connected to his inner circle. There was this look in his eye when he saw that I was filming him, this terrible look that really felt like the look of someone who is capable of ordering people to be killed. It was like “Get this woman to stop filming me immediately.” Some bodyguards rushed in and pulled me away. I really wanted to see that look in his eyes, and see whether or not it came across to the audience. But that was just footage we couldn’t get.

There was a lot which I thought was deeply memorable. Probably one of the most powerful examples for me was we had filmed in Rwanda at a church where thousands of people had been massacred. When arrived, there was a man there who had survived the massacre and was basically the custodian of the small memorial that had been created there. He was clearly desperate for the memory of what had happened to be recorded, and he took me down to a kind of crypt. The ground was muddy, there were caskets with bodies falling out of them, and everything was rotting. He wanted me to film it because he wanted people to not forget what had happened there, but as you can imagine, it was completely horrific. I couldn’t remember whether I had filmed it or pretended to film it on his behalf, to communicate “Yes, I am seeing this, I am witnessing this thing.” I went back to that footage, and it turned out I had immediately turned the camera off because it was so horrific I didn’t want anyone else to see it. Now I regret that in some ways, and in other ways I don’t, and that’s the conundrum of all this.

DS: What made you shift from the unifying focus on violence of the “Trauma Cut” to the final cut, which is more quotidian details of life and work?

KJ: I think the “Trauma Cut” really was unbearable. It was too much to take, it was a visual assault. And so we thought a lot about how to present some of the intensity of what is going on in the world and what one experiences as a camperaperson while not making everyone want to turn it off immediately. Nels Bangerter had a lot of perspective for me: he was finding the ways in which I really enjoy myself in the world — how I can be in a space where people are living with a lot of suffering, but still we’re joking together, I’m enjoying the food that they’re serving, talking to their kids. Nels was able to identify for me the mechanism with which I cope. And many of those mechanisms I have learned from people who have experienced brutality themselves. People find the esoteric humor in their situations; it encourages one to find coping mechanisms that aren’t just total despair.

DS: How difficult was it to edit the structure of the film to find the proper flow?

KJ: We had a guiding principle that the audience would be sophisticated and capable of understanding all the dimensions of this. So with the early scene in which I’m shooting landscape and react to sudden lightning, you immediately have this knowledge that I’m there. And the scene where I reach out my hand and pluck the grass in front of the camera tells you that not only am I there, but I’m also an active participant in the creation of these images. Once I’ve established that, you can move onto other things.

Another organizing principle was to let a piece of footage do as many things as possible. We tried to create rules around the way we presented scenes. For example, the abortion clinic scene was a B-roll shot in Trapped, so we had to add back in the sound. We only wanted to do that once in the film. We wanted to include one scene exactly as it was in the original film, from Derrida. We were constantly making rules like that, and that was what helped us to not only figure out what order we put things in, but what footage we used.

DS: You use title cards to introduce subjects and locations. How much did you experiment with how to create context for the footage?

KJ: Context is the key word; we were trying to figure out how much was needed. Eventually, it became clear that we had to own that this was its own movie. Whenever we provided too much context, your brain would leave and head off toward the other film. When I was shooting, I didn’t yet know the title of the film I was working on, or when it would come out or what it would be about. So we put the viewer in my position when filming, which is that I knew where I was—and that was about it.

I really believe that these images are relationships. They are relationships in the making, but they continue to be relationships moving forward in the future. Each one is an interaction between the people filmed, the people who recorded the material, and the people who watch it. Me watching Abdul Henderson [in Fahrenheit 9/11] when the Iraq War is going on is one thing. Watching Abdul Henderson will mean another thing to the person who sees that footage.

DS: How do you think you’ve changed as a photographer over the course of your career?

KJ: That’s what was fascinating to me about Camperaperson, was realizing how revealed I am in the footage. I can see myself at different ages, where I was obsessed or drawn to different things or I understood things differently. All of my life, I’ve thought a lot about the way race is constructed and how racism functions, but it took me until much later in life to think about gender inequity, and I can see that shift happening in how I look at people. There are things like that which are very private to me, where I know what I understood at a time when I filmed it, and I can see myself changing. I didn’t realize that that would be in the footage.

DS: Going forward, do you have any more ideas for a film you’d like to direct, or would you prefer to continue as a cinematographer?

KJ: I am working on a new project as a director and as a camperaperson with my father, and I also have a larger, multi-year camera-people project that I’m working on. I am very actively pursuing the ideas that Camperaperson opened up for me.

Twenty years ago today, I came down the hill from my History 101 course with my brain a-whirring, made my way to the computer lab in the dungeon basement of my dorm, logged onto Usenet [1], and posted the following to alt.fan.wedge:

Okay, I just got back from my History of Western Civilization class, and I have to vent. It’s no secret that GL got his ideas from other cultures and traditions. So it wasn’t too surprising when my teacher(who’s pretty awesome, IMO) was explaining animism today, he used SW as an example. (it sure made taking notes a lot easier. ::g::) Animists believe that the universe is alive, i.e., the Force is there. And they have shamans who are basically Jedi knights. I identified with evrything he was saying until he got to explaining their general classes of gods. Here’s what they have: the old father god, the young warrior god, the young goddess of war/love, and the trickster. There were parallels here to SW: trickster=Han Solo, wise father=Obi-Wan, goddess=Leia. But my teacher went on and on about how the young warrior was the coolest of all, he went off and fought battles and monsters and all the cool stories were about him. So who else would he choose for the SW parallel but Farm Boy. Bleah! I _almost_ went up to him after class and protested. Farm Boy isn’t the coolest warrior! _Wedge_ is, of course!

Yet another example of the oppression Wedge fans suffer at the hands of Farm Boy…. ::sigh:: Well, he���s guaranteed I’ll remember _that_ part of the lecture.

How about: Vote Wedge. He’s the true animist warrior god.

From such humble [?!] beginnings was the True Animist Warrior God movement born. (Some time later I printed out a post signed with the TAWG [3] campaign slogan and taped said slogan onto my history notebook.)

This was not to bag on the history course. It was only the second day, as far as I can tell from my notes [4]. I had wanted to take the honors section of the course, but it wouldn’t fit in the schedule of other classes I was taking [5]. It turns out that I don’t regret this, as I very much enjoyed the class. It was actually taught by a graduate student, IIRC, and he was very good; he described many events in a human context with the emotions and motivations of the players. [6] Really, the worst thing about the course was that it was at 7 am—a less than ideal way, shall we say, to start college [7]. (Oh my TAWG, I’m going absolutely berserk with the footnotes! My brain keeps going off on tangents, but I don’t want to interrupt myself all the time. wheeee!)

(Interestingly, the next semester I continued on with Hist 102, which this time was taught by a professor. Who wasn’t nearly as interesting as the grad student!)

According to my heading for the Animism post in the Classic Threads section of the AFW website [8], I previously linked Star Wars to the Sumerian epic Gilgamesh–where Farmboy was Gilgamesh, taking all the credit, and Wedge was Enkidu, doing all the work. I think now this might be a little revisionist history. I can’t remember in which course I read Gilgamesh, but it’s likely that it was Lit of Western Civ that same semester (high school Senior AP English was British lit, where we watched every Jane Austen movie Ever Made *gag*). The earliest post of mine I can find referencing the two was actually the *next* week or so, in the midst of the Epic, Historical “Fantasy Toys” Thread, in response to Quiara:

I really want to write my Lit of Western Civ essay on the parallels between Gilgamesh/Enkidu and Luke/Wedge, but I could never get four pages out of that and have my teacher actually like it. ::pout:: [9]

Both of these posts were commenting on what I felt (still do feel, to some extent) was a sad state of affairs in being a WedgeFan. Namely, that Wedge was a lot cooler than most people give him credit for. (And, underlying that feeling, a WedgeFan’s natural disdain for Luke “Farmboy” [10] Skywalker.) This would reach its fannish culmination in the Book of Wedge, but had real-world significance in the woeful lack of a separate carded Wedge Antilles action figure. As well as the lack of Wedge awareness among those who weren’t huge pilotfans.

Despite that, 1997 was a fantastic year to be a WedgeFan. Maybe if you weren’t Quiara, Brett, or myself, it was different—we three were quite chatty—but I never heard anyone complain. ;-) [11] It wasn’t actually our most active year, but it was the beginning of what I think of as the “golden years” of AFW. The first four X-Wing books (by Historian of Wedge Michael A. Stackpole) had been released by January 1997, and Mike actually lurked and occasionally even posted. I joined in the spring of 1997 as a senior in high school (with a very embarassing post which will not be reproduced here). Quiara was in high school. Brett wasn’t being challenged too much by work or life, because he also apparently had a lot of time on his hands. Somehow the three of us had some mojo (and also probably high blood sugar content) that just led to wacky hijinks. Quiara declared Wedge’s candidacy for President in April, a story which would last well *past* the 2004 election. I declared him TAWG in August. The Fantasy Toys thread was started earlier in August, thus cementing me into the AFW madness and keeping me frequently posting even when I probably should have been paying attention to college. (eh. I gradutated.) The “the world is falling down…” thread was that year, too.

Of all the Internet friends I have, interestingly it’s Quiara and Brett whom I’ve never met in real life. I actually haven’t heard from Quiara in years; she dropped off the radar at about the time she started college, I think, thus proving her work (study) ethic. ;-) I can’t say I really knew her all that well—AFW was almost exclusively the limit of our interaction—but I still consider her to have been an early partner in crime. I still hear from Brett occasionally, and I actually can’t believe I haven’t found myself visiting his city before now. Brett holds a special place in my memory not only for being such an integral part of that first crazy year on AFW, but also for scoring me the Wedge action figure I like to call “biceps Wedge”–the one from the Milennium Falcon carrying case, which his comics store was selling loose for some reason.

Resorting again to Google Groups (we never know, when we’re making history, that we are doing so, and as such fail to keep track of these things), it looks like I first styled myself Prophet Kristy on October 8, 1997, in a short thread titled “Random Thoughts.” [12] Quiara, bless her heart, actually accused me of being humble:

(Yeah, maybe I could have—I am Catholic, after all—but, y'know, “Prophetess” works better on the back of a kickball shirt that “Cardinal”. “-ess.” Er, see what I mean?)

One month later (AFAICT) I first signed a post as “Prophet Kristy”–and the rest, as they say, is history.

I could go on and on with the AFW nostalgia——but I should probably get to work on actual, you know, work. And this is getting LONG. However, I do want to mention one other thing in relation to the TAWG / Prophetess thing.

The Book of Wedge was my default icon on LiveJournal—a little cartoon made by terrathree, originally for Terra Group, that she kindly made 100x100 when I started LJing. I didn’t actually come up with the idea for the Book of Wedge—the document I wrote was largely an adaptation from “The Adventures of Wedge Antilles” written by Mike Scorsch and posted on his late web page Corellian Bloodstripes. I’d always been greatly amused by the idea of revisionist SW history with Wedge being the person behind *everything*–especially having Wedge actually blow the first DS as well as the second. Having declared myself a Prophet, I also felt it was only fair that I write a Holy Book. Thus was born the Book of Wedge, wherein Wedge not only blows up both Death Stars, but also shoots Greedo, fights off the Slave I with a blaster, and generally saves the day. In it, I declared Quiara and Brett to be Apostles of Wedge along with Jim and Marji, two others who were in the thick of AFW in late 1997. And generally had a blast being silly and fangirly.

Quiara followed this up with the Book of Quiara, a short history of the campaign and other silliness. And much later, terrathree expanded on an observation I’d made about the constellation Orion looking like an X-wing and wrote the tale of the Hunter of the Sky.

These are only a few of the many, many tales of Wedge spawned by AFW, but they are the Holiest. So sayeth the Prophetess of the Great One, Wedge Antilles, the True Animist Warrior God. *makes the Sign of the Exploding Death Star*

I imagine our old IRC chat server probably doesn’t even exist anymore (is IRC even still a thing??)–Feast Days used to always be Chat Days–but have a good Feast Day of Wedge, won’t you all? Do the Ewok Dance, drink some Ewok Juice, bag on Farmboy, and revel in the glory of the Rebellion’s Greatest Starpilot.
