All of the Phantom Hourglass fanart I did recently in one post! Featuring: the shopkeepers, Oshus, Linebeck and Ciela, Zauz, and Astrid.

I want to make individual art of the shopkeepers sometime, they're just so cute. The one with Oshus was the one I worked hardest on, and though I don't usually draw male or elderly characters, I really like how he turned out, and it's my favorite piece of the bunch in terms of the results.

But also something about the shopkeeper profile I first made (the standalone miss Ai from Mercay Island) is very endearing to me. I struggled a bit with Zauz and Astrid, I feel like I need to draw them more to get them right.

What is steam world you need to enlighten me

HELLO. So sorry its been a HOT SECOND. this has been my fixation for around... 3 years? So, here's an infodump under the cut

Steamworld is a game series that has been running for over 10 years! Starting with Steamworld Tower Defense in 2010, the game series has been going strong. I'll give a little explanation on the games, then each of them individually:

Steamworld: Robot game series of many different genres, I believe there Is something for everyone! Most recent game came out last year, in December of 2023. There are more games scheduled to come out! The series (chronologically, not by release) goes as the following: Steamworld Tower Defense - Steamworld Dig - Steamworld Dig 2 / Steamworld Build (happening at the same time) - Steamworld Heist - Steamworld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech [Quest is Strange. its not in the timeline really]

Now, onto the games!

Steamworld Tower Defense: (gonna be real i have it but never played it), super old tower defense game and idek if it has lore connected to it. Might be considered lost media now? It was on the DS before the shop closed.

Steamworld Dig: a mining + metroidvania game - Follow Rusty, a mining bot who arrives to Tumbleton, a very small mining town. Pick up after your Uncle Joe, explore the mines, and uncover an ancient secret.

Steamworld Dig 2: A digging + metroidvania game - Play as Dorothy McCrank, or Dot, as she explores and searches, making new friends, finding old history, and learning things as she explores the mines of El Machino.

Steamworld Build: A citybuilder game - Build a bustling town as the Earth slowly crumbles apart. Watch as Jack Clutchsprocket and his daughter Astrid work to build a rocket before time runs out. Explore the mines, build a city, and keep everybody happy.

Steamworld Heist: A turn based RPG strategy shooter game - Play as Piper Faraday and her crew of rag-tag bots as they not only explore space, but do a bit of pirate work. Astrid Nielsen (France - Astrid et Raphaëlle / Astrid: Murder in Paris)

QUEEN AUTISM! HER! HER! HER! I cant really be neutral for this one, she diagnosed autistic and very uncompromising about it! The whole show is about her learning to work with a neurotypical police officer (Astrid works in criminal records). She is kinda trope-y (ie, bad social but smart enough to make up for it) but the difference is she isn't just "useful" to the other characters. She is so loved and everyone will fight her corner if needed! There is so much ASD struggle and ASD joy in this show - I've picked up Astrids hand stims and I adore how open and honest she is with Raph. (insert the "you are my thimble" scene). I loves her muchly. I guess I've never had such a relatable character on screen before - you don't realise how much rep matters until there's someone like a lot like you on tv

Did anyone else’s autistic/neurodivergent self hoard any piece of whatever they could get for how to train your dragon? Because I had any toy my Walmart sold (which was quite a lot), every dvd, coloring books, the sheep launcher board game (fun as hell btw), all 12 books (as they came out), coloring pages from my grandpa’s fancy HP printer, I kept hiccup and astrid noodles from the Kraft Mac and cheese, a cut out of hiccup from the kid cuisine, gogurt tubes with the characters, cut out pieces from the boxes my toys came in and arranged it on my door and a little crayola box I had and carried everything with me in that, the wii and ds games, a jacket I wore till it didn’t fit anymore, and probably more literal trash I’m forgetting about like I did not throw that stuff away I washed it out and kept it like a trophy and I just wanna know if anyone else has/had this level of obsession and based on the above idk how my family didn’t know I was autistic sooner.

I kept the timelapse recorder on while making the line art for the Astrid art I made, so here it is!

...you can see here the stacked bracelets gave me huge trouble to figure out lol.

I guess owing to the limited capabilities for graphics on the DS, Phantom Hourglass used distinct shapes for each character so they can be identified with distinctive features (Linebeck is more angular and spiky, Oshus has a spout-shaped ponytail). It's rather fun studying the character models!

For Astrid, she's rather round and curvy, so I tried to keep that while drawing her. In the manga, Akira Himekawa drew Astrid rather spiky with the hair and accessories lol, but I did like the chained ring accessories she had on her hands. I feel like that would clutter her design here, though, so I stuck to the in game model and concept art for reference (the white hair streak and rings coming from the concept art).

Everything’s coming up wyverns!

Since I already got onto the subject of Fire Emblem gameplay with my recent post on the Weapon Triangle, I guess it’s a good opportunity to hit on another complaint that often gets hurled at the feet of Three Houses: that the game is just wyvern spam.

Now before I get into the details of why this is a Fire Emblem problem rather than a Three Houses problem, it’s worth pointing out that this viewpoint that spawned in 2019 and never really went away, despite being nothing more than low-effort ammunition to bitch about the game.

It was certainly true at one point that you could just mass a squadron of wyverns to roll over the enemy with, but that was back when hard was the highest difficulty we had. And hard’s a joke. But with the advent of Maddening and further development of the meta, anybody pretending that, “just mass wyverns!” is still considered the best strategy can safely be ignored. I mean, Bernadetta was once deemed a trash unit, now she’s unironically considered better than Claude and the male version of Byleth.

So, why do people complain about mass wyverns so much? Most because it’s visually boring and appears to result in a team with no versatility. In most games, what class a unit is in has a huge part to play in their prospects, so the class system appears to force versatility on your team by giving different units different strengths and weaknesses, but this very seldom plays out in reality. In actual practice, one or two classes are best in a given game, players just mass those classes with maybe a few others to support them, and if you’re in the wrong class for a given game (footies in 4, swordlocks in 7) then you’re dead on arrival.

While it isn’t actually true in Three Houses that mono-class teams lack versatility to begin with (units are made unique in this game not by their base class but by their skill aptitudes, abilities, spells, and combat arts), to pretend that Three Houses invented the issue of mono-class teams with its redesign of the class system is ludicrous.

FE4 is horse spam, FE 6, 7, 8, 9, and 11 are horse and flier spam, FE13 is dark mage and hero spam, FE14 is more flexible but there was still a lot of wyvern and ninja spam, and FE15 is mostly soloing everything with an archer and sometimes using a horse or merc for specific tasks. Meanwhile, FE12 avoids this by having the best array of promoted classes in the entire series (EVERY promoted class aside from Warrior has some valuable niche at varying points in the game) and that game has DS Emblem’s free class changing system. The problem is game balance, not army versatility.

Now, getting back to Three Houses.

As I mentioned previously, a large part of what makes units unique in this game is not their class but what attributes, abilities, spells, and combat arts they learn. In this game, classes are often little more than a vehicle through a unit leverages their innate qualities (Sniper and Grappler are two notable exceptions to this).

To take just the Black Eagles as an example, assuming you’re using your entire base class you’re likely to end the game with Edelgard, Petra, Ferdinand, and a female Byleth on wyverns.

On paper, you have 4 units who fly around and bop people with an axe.

In practice, Ferdinand’s the wyvern you use when you need guaranteed doubling or to hit those annoying swordmasters or assassins, Petra’s probably the only wyvern who can carry silver or brave bows since she has a bow boon and low skill benchmarks, Byleth’s the wyvern who has battalion desperation so she can kill mid-tier and slower enemies without giving them a chance to counter, and Edelgard’s the wyvern with Aymr.

Now compare this to the fandom darling Path of Radiance, where your options are to have Titania ride around killing everybody with axes or have Oscar ride around killing everybody with axes or have Jill fly around killing everybody with axes or have Kieran ride around killing everybody with axes or have Astrid ride around killing everybody with axes or have Makalov ride around killing everybody with axes, or when you wanna break out of your comfort zone, you can have Marcia or Tanith fly around killing everyone with lances.

Yay versatility :D

And as I alluded to previously, “just mass wyverns!” is a stupidly inefficient way to play Maddening. People who know what they’re doing haven’t unironically done that for years.

The pool of units who function best on wyverns is actually quite limited if you’re looking beyond physical female units, and wyverns are generally more resource-intensive than most paths. You also want a dancer, a healer, generally one or two warpers, and at least one sniper for shooting down enemy pegasus knights. There’s also the fact that your deploy slots are limited to 10 before the time skip, by which point your team is mostly fully developed so adding a late-joining extra wyvern is giving you diminishing returns. Maybe go for a rally bot or somebody to carry a utility battalion instead.

In practice, most players will have 4 or 5 wyverns on their final team depending on which route and who they recruit (the OG Blue Lions, for instance, have very few units at all who are well-suited for riding wyverns). This only seems like a significant chunk of your team because Three Houses has unusually low deploy caps for most of the game, maxing out at 10 and 11 for most maps.

So yeah, “Three Houses has poor gameplay because just make everyone wyverns and win!” is a weak argument from start to finish. It hasn’t been relevant since 2020.

I’ll take this opportunity to say fuck microphone mechanics in DS games. Is the Spirit Flute a charming and unique part of Spirit Tracks? Yeah. Do I look like a fool playing it in public? Oh yeah (do I look like a fool playing a DS in public anyway?).

Yo how about the puzzles where you have to blow out torches? Or use the whirlwind? Or that one scene in Phantom Hourglass that you need to literally yell to Astrid behind a door? When I was a 9 year old playing through that section, I had no idea what I was supposed to do because I didn’t piece together that the “mic” Ciela was talking about was the same “mic” written on the hinge of my DS.

How about how even a working microphone will never work properly in a car or plane because of the ambient noise? Makes entire sections of PH and ST unplayable. Good luck playing a lokomo duet when you can’t jump notes, idiot. Those whole POINT is that is a PORTABLE system to play on the GO but I can’t DO that when I need to use the MICROPHONE.

Yes I am airing the grievances of 9 year old me. Yes I’m still bitter about it.

Remember folks, if you go into the Sinnoh underground, make sure your DS microphone works. Otherwise you might get trapped in a fire and that will softlock you.

One last time, y’all. This campaign and these characters have meant so much to me, and this seven hour finale was definitely an emotional rollercoaster. (Yes, I shed actual tears at one point, which rarely happens to me with media. But this is a special occasion.) These liveblogs are nearly as long as the episode itself, so grab a snack! With that being said, here are my very last liveblogs for Campaign 2 of Critical Role. As always, major spoilers below, so beware.

- Speaking of relationships, I am lowkey into the Fjord/Jester/Kingsley dynamic LOL no one look at me I’m in hiding

- Caleb burning down his chance to change his past is so symbolic and something he really needed to do, it does make me emotional though

- While I would have loved for Caleb to open his own magic school (especially with Essek, or the Mighty Nein, or someone else as well), I am so pleased that he stays with Veth and that their friendship continues for the rest of their life because again: they mean so so much to me, and in a way they remind me of me and my biological brother (which I never realized before this episode) and yeah. They just make me Emo

- Also. Caleb being a professor was my Number One Endgame Hope for him and the fact that it came true is just so surreal in the best way possible. I’m so used to being robbed of happy endings. The fact that the Mighty Nein all got theirs makes me incredibly happy. A story does not have to be sad to be impactful. Happy stories and happy endings, especially during a time period of tumultuous real life circumstances, have just as much value and meaning and they always will. Caleb is teaching the next generation magic, and he is teaching them to be Good, and he is nurturing them, and that just means so much

- Okay, everyone. I made it all seven hours in one piece with surprisingly minimal tears (though who knows, this might all sink in tomorrow.) I already wrote my thoughts earlier today about how much the Mighty Nein mean to me and how much this show and these characters have kept me holding on during quarantine and today... I’m still not ready to let them go, but I know that I can always revisit to say hello and to say thank you for changing me. Until then though... I love you all more than you could ever know. And for the last time of Campaign 2... is it Thursday yet?
