1. Eraserheads
Tumblr media
Sila ay tinatawag minsan na "The Beatles of the Philippines."

My Top 120 Songs Of 2017
Previously: 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011
Tumblr media
The one saving grace is we do have 12 fewer than last year.
As always, criteria and info:
This is a list of what I personally like, not ones I’m saying are the “best” from the year; more subjective than objective
No artist is featured more than once
If it comes down to choosing between two songs for an artist, I try to give more weight to a single or featured track; not the ultimate factor, but it typically makes sharing the music easier
Speaking of… each song on the list is linked in the title if you wanna check any or every out for yourself
Oh, also, off the suggestion of Mike Gilkes -- and a few others -- I made this whole thing into a Spotify playlist, which you can peep here (includes 114 of the 120):
Let’s go?
youtube
120) Big Sean & Metro Boomin f/ 21 Savage - “Pull Up N Wreck”
Some mediocre, listenable rap made by dudes who know a bit better (well, at least 2/3rds of them).
119) Maroon 5 f/ Future - “Cold”
This song makes me feel mostly nothing... but the first minute of the video does have some solid Adam Levine alone-in-the-car acting.
/oh my god it has 119 million views
This was a lot easier to enjoy when I assumed it went unnoticed. Bonus points for the Wu-Tang shirt at the end.
118) Bleachers - “Hate That You Know Me”
Closed out 2017 undecided as ever on one Jack Antonoff. Should we hate him for dating Lena Dunham? Somehow respect him more? Give him mega credit for his big time pop songwriting collabs? Or is that a ding? Is he a nerd or the coolest guy in the cocktail bar? I do not know the answers to any of these questions, and this song is merely OK.
UPDATE: THEY GAWN
117) B.o.B f/ T.I. & Ty Dolla $ign - “4 Lit”
Real bad song with a mindless/terrible/misogynistic chorus. Yet... something about professional musicians sitting in a room and coming up with “4 Lit” as some sort of escalated to catchphrase to “lit” is just hilarious.
116) Prophets of Rage - “Unfuck The World”
Sure, this hits a lot of the same beats as Rage Against The Machine’s “Sleep Now In The Fire” from 18 years ago, but in these increasingly polarized, political times, I welcome their voice.
115) Kacy Hill - “Like A Woman”
This song is so chill and ethereal that it seems almost unfeasible for my punk/hip-hop/XX chromosome havin’ ass to completely sync with its wave.
114) The Decemberists - “Ben Franklin’s Song”
What happens when pop indie teams up with the lyrical stylings of Lin-Manuel Miranda? Well, this. I’m not sure if The Decemberists drop f-bombs in any of their other songs, but it pleases me to think it only happened here.
113) Offset & Metro Boomin - “Ric Flair Drip”
Mostly here for the beat.
Tumblr media
112) Hurray For The Riff Raff - “Hungry Ghost”
A cool song that’s hard to put into a box. Indie? Pop? Rock? Forget labels, just enjoy.
(Minus a few points for the low hanging “girl/world” rhyme)
111) Wavves - “Dreams Of Grandeur”
I was pretty let down by the new Wavves LP, but this song sounds enough like the old stuff to be a net positive (despite being, like, 70 seconds too long)
110) Culture Abuse - “So Busted”
Culture Abuse got on my radar with last year’s all-timer, “Dream On”. It was an unrelenting, robotic pulverization. “So Busted” is more of a drug comedown; a ballad, even. While “Dream On” wanted to seek you out and kill you like a terminator; “So Busted” just wants a cuddle.
109) Trey Songz - “#1Fan”
This song is so dumb and funny and pseudo competent. Really not sure how the R&B guys get away with this shit.
108) The Killers - “The Man”
Is this in a movie? It should be in a movie. It’s kind of, like, a better version of what Arcade Fire has been trying to be.
107) New Lenox - “Protest Sweater”
A good song for the ending 2017 -- or any year, really -- and its run time (1:30) would make Joyce Manor proud.
Tumblr media
106) Logic - “Everybody”
This is really good, but it reminds me so much of Kendrick that it becomes distracting.
105) Gorillaz f/ DRAM - “Andromeda”
Didn’t spend enough time listening to the new Gorillaz record, but I actually put the blame on them: it was long, man. So while I woulda loved to pick one of the songs with a cool cameo (hi, Vince Staples!), this is the one I actually had around the most. It’s all we’ve come to expect from this cartoon band -- kinda British, kinda futuristic, very undisturbed. Also, if it gets you back to the album before me, I heard that Damon Albarn told all collaborating artists to record their parts like the world was ending tomorrow.
104) Dropkick Murphys - “Blood”
If you know me at all, you know I historically have not been a fan of this band. But for whatever reason, this one connected -- bagpipes and all.
103) Captain, We’re Sinking - “Books”
CWS was never, ever going to top the falling-apart-desperation of 2013′s “The Future Is Cancelled”, but this song comes pleasantly close.
102) IRONTOM - “Be Bold Like Elijah”
My buddy Crooks rec’d this band, and the guitars give me Queens Of The Stone Age vibes in the best possible way. A bio on lastFM compared them to Arctic Monkeys, and you know what? I agree with that, too.
101) Jidenna - “A Bull’s Tale”
This song feels primed to explode and makes you wanna rip the shirt off your chest; only we don’t know if the bomb’s gonna blow in the middle or at the end.
100) Jeff Tweedy - “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart”
Yeah yeah, the original version of this dropped in 2002, and yes, it’s just a cover by the dude who originally sang it. I... do not care. It made me appreciate the confessional regret all over again.
99) Talib Kweli f/ Yummy Bingham & Jay Electronica - “All Of Us”
It was all bad just a week ago
Kweli and Jay Elect are a collab made in conscious rap heaven, so this song was more than a pleasant surprise.
98) Rise Against - “House On Fire”
This song could have been on “Revolutions Per Minute”. Or maybe I’m just saying that because of the hand grenade lyric in the chorus.
97) HAIM - “Want You Back”
Can’t imagine there being a lamer song on this list. HAIM and Bleachers should get in a wuss rock beef that ends with pistols.
96) The Bigger Empty - “By Its Own (So What)”
My producer plays bass in this band. This song is super solid, and, maybe most importantly in these completely divisive times, unoffensive and approachable. Kinda Hush Sound-y.
95) Little Big Town - “Lost In California” (note: link is to live version)
From the bros and broettes who brought us “Day Drinking” comes this much more subdued track. If you squint, it doesn’t really even seem like country. Granted, if they sang “Alabama” instead of “California”, you could probably call that claim out immediately.
94) Lana Del Rey - “Heroin”
Another beautiful/dreamy song from an artist who’s near-perfected that niche.
93) Wavves & Culture Abuse - “Up And Down”
Wavves and Culture Abuse have already made appearances on this list, and we haven’t even cracked the Top 80. Fortunately, their collaboration scored a little higher than their individual outputs. Shout out to their uplifting outro “I’ll just get high and I’ll die alone”.
92) The Chainsmokers & Coldplay - “Something Just Like This”
This song played at my gym all the time, and I was positive it was Coldplay. Then someone told me it was The Chainsmokers. Then I looked it up on YouTube, and it says “The Chainsmokers & Coldplay”... so what’s the deal, assholes?
91) Lil Peep f/ Lil Tracy - “Awful Things”
I hadn’t heard of Lil Peep when I found out of his passing in 2017. After looking up some pictures, I was nearly 100% positive his music was not for me. This was incorrect. I haven’t really listened to songs that sound like his; it’s kind of like rap that treads this line of being bad while also kinda sounding like alternative rock; destructive love song that doesn’t flinch.
Tumblr media
90) AFI - “Dark Snow”
Nothing new, but Davey Havok can still sing circles around almost anybody.
89) Dashboard Confessional - “Love Yourself” (link is to live, partial version)
Well, Dashboard covered Biebs, and we all lived to tell the tale.
88) Garrett Dale - “2016 Was...”
This song would be a blast as a singalong in a late night hotel room. There’s something calming about celebrating -- or at least acknowledging -- everything sucking.
87) Katy Perry f/ Skip Marley - “Chained To The Rhythm”
Got more than a few issues with this song, but it’s catchy, so they’re mostly forgiven. Even though it’s Katy Perry, I was pretty surprised to see it racked up 444 million views.
And seriously who the hell is Skip Marley?!
86) The Ramblin’ Boys Of Pleasure - “Glug, Glug, Glug”
Now is probably a good time to plug the lead track from my band’s b-sides record that came out this year (ten years in the making, baby!). Mandatory listening if you’ve ever bonged brandy, partied in Champaign, or counted down in a country voice.
Tumblr media
85) Charly Bliss - “Glitter”
It’s been nearly a year, but it’s still somewhat difficult to calibrate this singer’s voice. Is it a little too saccharine, too childlike, or just perfect? You be the judge.
84) Emperor X - “Wasted On The Senate Floor”
This singer is real god damn frenetic.
83) Father John Misty - “Total Entertainment Forever”
/obligatory “yes, this is the one with the Taylor Swift lyric” reference
FJM has such a pro’s pro voice and makes super sound music... but it’s also kinda hard to have an overall opinion. The more 50-50 I get, the more I think it’s not all that great. The video is a microcosm. Like... why is Macaulay Culkin paying Cobain? Is this a commentary on capitalism? Oooh, nah nah nahs are nice! As divided as I still am, I’m pretty positive this song is good-if-not-great.
82) St. Vincent - “New York”
This song is further proof that soft, radio friendly music can still benefit from a well placed “motherfucker”.
81) Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness - “Dead Man’s Dollar”
As long as Andrew McMahon’s project is called “Andrew McMahon In the Wilderness”, I will make fun of him like clockwork.
This song is nice. I sometimes sing “I want Thon Maker” when he says “I want to make a” in the chorus.
80) Kele Okereke - “Streets Been Talkin’”
Kele’s most impressive feat was sneaking “bae” right into the chorus without me noticing until literally right now.
79) Rick Ross - “Summer Seventeen”
How the hell did this dumbass song get so high up on the list? I have no explanation. Classic Roazy though -- aim high, fake it till you make it. When I started my new job in August, IT reset my password to “summer2017″, and I had this song’s hook in my head nearly every time I typed it in. All told, a pretty hilarious way to start a work day.
78) Michelle Branch - “Best You Ever”
This song sounds so dark and sultry, but I’m not totally sure why. Branch rules.
77) Calvin Harris f/ Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry & Big Sean - “Feels”
The best way to ruin this song for anyone is to point out how much the hook sounds like Katy Perry singing “Don’t be afraid to catch fish”.
Tumblr media
76) Morrissey - “Spent The Day In Bed”
This is a very low maintenance lyric video. So you can either make fun of that or the “I spent the day in bed / I’m not the type, but I love my bed” line.
75) Red City Radio - “If You Want Blood (Be My Guest)”
The “We don’t need a god damn thing from you” chorus is a little punk cliche to win me over, but the Oklahoma City reference (”where our dreams come true and die”) is the line I’ve been waiting for since I found out RCR was from there.
74) Sam Coffey & The Iron Lungs - “Talk 2 Her”
The closest we’ll get to a new Clash song in 2017.
73) Bad Cop/Bad Cop - “Womanarchist”
Factoring in the 2017′s themes (#MeToo, Harvey dead, etc.), this has to be the song title of the year. I smiled ear-to-ear watching this music video.
72) The Movielife - “Mercy Is Asleep At The Wheel”
Hey, The Movielife reunited!
71) The Rocket Summer - “Gone Too Long”
Unlike that lazy ass Morrissey, The Rocket Summer gave us a lyric video that basically passes as a legit music video.
70) Miguel f/ Travis Scott - “Sky Walker”
Me, every time I listen to this song:
“Ooh, beat is pretty solid.”
“Ah yeah, the hook’s good. I thought I really liked this song though...”
/falsetto part
“AW YEAH.”
69) Queens Of The Stone Age - “The Way You Used To Do”
Had never known about the Josh Homme/Elvis comparisons, but after hearing this, I totally get it now. Also: god damn it, man.
68) Macklemore f/ Skylar Grey - “Glorious”
What can we do to make Skylar Grey more famous? She Ginger Rogers’d for Em on “SNL” -- seriously, she played piano and sung Dido, Beyoncé, and Rihanna hooks (that’s a solid ass trinity!) -- has unarguably awesome songs, and never takes anything off the table. I honestly don’t care if she has another hit... let’s just, like, all Venmo her five bucks or something.
One of my fav music videos on the list so far. Be as skeptical of Macklemore as you want, but when his grandma offers him a drink (haha) then says she wants to “do it all” with their day together, it warms the hearts.
67) Direct Hit! - “Blood On Your Tongue”
Direct Hit! continues to be the best modern version of Green Day, The Ramones*, and themselves.
(* - without being Ramones-core)
66) Boyd & The Stahfools - “Party Penguin”
I’ve been in the game for a long while, but, for the first time in my career, I finally was part of a music video. If you told me it was a 2Pac parody that advertised craft beer, I’d, well, I’d believe you. We got Dave Hernandez on the hook, Mike Healy as Dr. Dre, and yours truly as Makaveli.
youtube
And all jokes aside, “On vacation like Bev D’Angelo” is one of my favorite penned lines.
65) Rancid - “Telegraph Avenue”
I like when Tim sings about grabbing his left-handed guitar.
64) Big Sean f/ Jeremih - “Light”
Sean Don made a forgettable 2017 album with many throwaway tracks -- but “Light” ain’t one of ‘em. I liked this song even before the touching video cemented its power.
63) blink 182 - “Parking Lot”
This is that weird mix of what makes all new blink really good and really eh at the same time -- Skiba involved (for better or worse), inspired Mark (for better or worse), and Travis’ overplaying (for better or worse). It’s for sure easier if you just turn your brain off and go with it.
Why does he reference Chicago in the verse then California in the pre-chorus?
I SAID “OFF”.
62) New Found Glory - “Your Jokes Aren’t Funny”
This song doesn’t break a ton of new ground, but it’s got this circular, easy chorus that keeps me coming back.
61) Teenage Bottlerocket - “Goin’ Back To Wyo”
Similar to Red City Radio writing about OKC, I can’t get enough of TB writing about their home. Did I blast this song while driving across the entire state alone this summer? Do you know me an ounce?
60) Frank Turner - “The Sand In The Gears”
A little dissatisfied with the current administration? Frank may be from across the pond, but he’s with you on this one, man. One of my favorite parts of this song is when he breaks the rhyme scheme just to angrily say “I thought that we were winning the war against the homophobes and the racists”.
59) Billy Bragg - “Not Everything That Counts Can Be Counted”
Billy Bragg is here for all of us, with perspective, wisdom, and insightful guidance in tow.
58) Dave Hause - “The Flinch”
Send this one to an old flame if you’re hoping, you know, to maybe rekindle.
57) Selena Gomez f/ Gucci Mane - “Fetish”
That’s right -- “Bad Liar” got beat out by this significantly less popular single featuring one of my least favorite rappers.
/looks up play totals
”Fetish”... 130 million
“Bad Liar”... 214 million
Comparably popular, I say! For me, this one is all about the chorus -- and that beat’ll get you swayin’.
56) Jay Electronica - “Letter To Falon”
‘Cause who gon’ save them babies? / And finally put a definite to all those maybes
Death, taxes, maybe death again, and Jay Electronica never releasing a full length album. Our man has been on Roc Nation for nearly ten years. I hate him so much. /anxiously awaits his next move
Jay Electricity in his zone on this one; so comfortable, in full operation within the confines.
55) Laura Jane Grace - “Adore”
I don’t know who Amy Shark is, but LJG covered her song and punted my heart into Lake Michigan.
youtube
54) Russian Girlfriends - “Antidote”
Upbeat, direct song that starts kinda Metric-y with the riff but then gets more pop punk as it progresses.
53) Brian Fallon - “If Your Prayers Don’t Get To Heaven”
My fiancee laughed when I looked up how to play this song on the guitar and the guy who tabbed it out wrote “Typical Brian Fallon open chords” in the intro.
52) Cloud Nothings - “Enter Entirely”
If “Womanarchist” is the ‘best’ song title of the year, “Enter Entirely” is certainly the coolest. And please don’t let the very boring music video fool you -- this song gets after it, man. If you are a fan of rock music, it would blow me away if you found this song remotely objectionable.
(After seeing CN open for Japandroids on back-to-back nights this November, it feels criminal to have such a slow song represent the band, as their drummer is the Russell Westbrook of the indie scene. That dude does not tire and comes off as more machine than man.)
51) Conor Oberst - “Napalm”
Oberst released a 10-song album in 2016 that was super brooding and piano-y... then he released another album in 2017 (17 songs) that had every track from his previous record and seven new ones. Kind of a weird move, no? This is one of those seven; suffice to say it’s a little more upbeat.
50) Sorority Noise - “No Halo”
You could tell me this song came out in 2002, 2007, or both -- but not 2017. How is this not a time capsuled rival of Taking Back Sunday or My Chemical Romance? I don’t know, but if you like a lot of death, this one’s for you.
49) N.E.R.D f/ Rihanna - “Lemon”
Let’s lighten the mood back up with some RiRi rap. My buddy Crooks’ take: “That's how every 2017 hip-hop beat should sound.”
Tumblr media
48) Kesha - “Praying”
It’s damn near impossible to talk about this song without talking about The Note. It occurs at 4:21, and it will make you a little faint.
Kesha dusts herself off and gets beyond empowered in this one. This song could legitimately soundtrack the entire #MeToo movement. When the drums kick in halfway through, you’ll be ready to fight back too.
When I’m finished, they won’t even know your name
47) The Smith Street Band - “Laughing (Or Pretending To Laugh)”
This soft, hopeful love song is almost *too* respectful when it comes to interactions with the opposite sex. I’m not sure there’s a more endearing 2017 lyric than “And I don't wanna marry you just yet / But at least let me get you a cider / And I don’t even think I’d have to pay for it / Hopefully there’s a couple left on the rider”.
46) Run The Jewels - “Legend Has It”
Whenever I think of this song, I will always have that image of El-P holding up that gun to the bunny’s head. This song is braggadocious, each line one-upping the previous in perpetuity. Man, they probably rule live.
45) Vic Mensa - “Say I Didn’t”
Vic Mensa's Roc Nation debut (CAN YOU HEAR ME AT ALL, JAY ELECTRONICA?!?!?!?!?!?) was real strong, and this one gives you a good taste of what he’s about. He’s intense but controlled and even gets a little soulful. And depending what sphere you come from, you’ll either be extremely more or extremely less interested after he drops a Weezer reference. If that gives you trepidation, maybe the Nate Dogg namedrop will reel you back in?
44) Kendrick Lamar - “HUMBLE.”
I like Kendrick Lamar and will always recognize his talent, platform, and body of work (there’s a real case to be made that his “Control” verse killed hip-hop, and it’s just been an animated zombie ever since). Having said that...
He doesn’t always make it easy. The all caps song titles, the weird high pitched flow, the massive reliance of “bitch” in his choruses... yet, he’s the same dude who begs for stretch marked butts and body positivity. I don’t know, man. By the time he hits the “I make a play fucking up your whole life” line, I’m nearly all the way back in.
Last complaint: that organ-y keyboard thing could be so much louder. The beat almost feels diet because of that decision.
43) PKEW PKEW PKEW - “Cold Dead Hands”
This song is about how you can’t freeze this band to death, because they’ll party their way out of the situation.
42) Weezer - “Any Friend Of Diane’s”
This song puts me in a trance; they sing the same chorus lyric a million times, and I still almost want more.
41) Taylor Swift - “I Did Something Bad”
If this song isn’t a hit in 2018, then I do not know anything. For as uneven and questionable as her new singles were, this song has none of that. By the time she’s rolling on the tremendously magnetic “over and over and over again” part, you’ll feel like it’s 2009.
Maybe the old Taylor is still alive after all.
40) Best Ex - “Someday”
What’s that, you want your pop with a lot less baggage? This song is currently at 1,042 views, which is further proof of no justice in this world. I remember grocery shopping with this in the headphones, and you woulda thought it was the happiest moment of my life by the expression on my smiling, dumb face.
39) White Reaper - “Judy French”
“There are no good new rock bands wahhhhh”
Nah -- you just suck at finding music when it’s never been easier in human history, I guess?
Tumblr media
38) Anti-Flag - “The Criminals”
This band has always lived in this dramatic life-and-death world, and it’s been going on for so long, that it’s like their vision of what they were always rebelling against was willed into existence.
37) French Montana f/ The Weeknd & Max B - “A Lie”
My dislike of French Montana is so high that I sometimes think about having to answer for saying something heinous about him. Kinda like when Kevin Garnett was accused of calling Charlie Villanueva (who has alopecia) a “cancer patient.”
KG’s all-time response:
“I am aware there was a major miscommunication regarding something I said on the court last night. My comment to Charlie Villanueva was in fact ‘You are cancerous to your team and our league,’" Garnett said in a statement to the media on Wednesday.
Hahahaha.
French, you are a cancer to hip-hop and our league. His verse even references stupid Karl Malone, because why wouldn’t it? The good news is we have The Weeknd on the hook *and* in the first verse, so you can basically just pretend it’s his solo song with a few regrettable cameos.
36) The Penske File - “Oh Brother”
The Penske File make it look effortless sometimes. After hearing this song and doing a Malört shot with their singer, I have higher hopes than ever for their 2018 full length.
35) The Front Bottoms - “Don’t Fill Up On Chips”
TFB’s new album didn’t give me everything I wanted in terms of uptempo bangers, but the lyrics, sentiment, and craftsmanship are all still very much present.
34) Vince Staples - “Big Fish”
The Juicy J chorus might not win a Pulitzer (”I was up late night ballin’ / Countin’ up hundreds by the thousand”), but Vince is rapping invincible, and by the time the lyrics call back his monster single (“Norf Norf”), you won’t be questioning anything anymore.
33) Julien Baker - “Shadowboxing” (link is to live version)
I know that you don't understand 'Cause you don't believe what you don't see When you watch me throwing punches at the devil It just looks like I'm fighting with me
I swear, Julien Baker might be one of the only people on this planet with the power to shut us all up and listen.
32) Paramore - “Fake Happy”
Paramore is a band that does dumb shit all the time. Infighting, legal drama, horrible makeover after horrible makeover. Seriously, this is real:
Tumblr media
But through it all, there’s that unbreakable Hayley voice, and it’s like everything is gonna be OK again. I mean, no, it’s not -- but let’s still enjoy these fleeting moments, full blown pop transition or not.
31) Nothington - “Cobblestones”
This song briefly sounds like Lucero before turning into no nonsense despair punk.
30) Lorde - “Perfect Places”
Such a phenomenal album closer; great to have her back in the pop music fold. Car, headphones, party, whatever -- this song goes all around you.
29) Remember Sports - “I Liked You Best”
If Kesha’s high note in “Praying” was pop music’s peak vocal moment in 2017, I’d like to nominate the “You made this me-heh-heh-heh-heh-heh-hess” (2:37) part as punk’s.
28) Phoenix - “J-Boy”
This band makes such gorgeous music.
27) Drake - “Free Smoke” (no link)
Drake’s full album output, in minutes, for the last four years:
2013: 59 minutes 2014: N/A 2015: 108 minutes 2016: 81 minutes
And this doesn’t include stray singles, diss tracks, or cameos (2014 had “0 To 100″, for example). What I’m saying is, despite high quality material, Aubrey has saturated us with music for nearly half a decade. So even though I dig him lots, it was like “Really?!” when I heard he was releasing 2017′s “More Life” and “WHAT” when I found out it was another 81 minutes (the same length as 2016′s “Views”). Though the record is stylistically very different -- I keep hearing people use the word “grime”, though I have no idea what it means -- it’s still got bars. My favorite stray lines (they add up):
- “More life, more everything” - “I dunk text J-Lo / Old number, so it bounce back” - “Hilton rooms, gotta double up / Writin’ our name on a double cup” - “I fall asleep in sororities / I had some different priorities” - “Women I like was ignorin’ me / Now they like ‘Aren’t you adorable?’ / I know the question rhetorical” - “I make too much these days to ever say ‘Poor me’” - “I wanna move to Dubai / So I don’t never have to kick it with none of you guys”
But, it wouldn’t be Drake without making fun of him some. The song beings with, well, him sampling himself at an award show. The sample:
And more chune for your headtop So watch how you speak on my name, you know?
Which begs the question: did he do the weird Jamaican accent knowing he was gonna sample it? It treads this weird genius/calculated doofus line. All I know is it makes me laugh.
26) Tigers Jaw - “Favorite”
This song could make me pensive and unhappy on the sunniest of days.
25) Tee Grizzley - “First Day Out”
Like many, I first heard of Tee Grizzley from a LeBron James Instagram workout video. It was an easy sell: Detroit, ferocious beat, and the dude goes *hard*. I got a little too excited and emailed my hip-hop friends: “What the fuck is this? This is GOOD.”
Tumblr media
This was before I realized he kinda sounds the same in every song. It’s no matter -- we’ll always have “First Day Out”, a brief time in June 2017 where I thought Tee Grizzley could be the next to run the game.
I can’t even be in public with my hoodie on
24) The War On Drugs - “Strangest Thing”
It’s very difficult to write about The War On Drugs without mentioning how transcendent it is to listen to them in the car. Everyone is right about that, but, for me, I also have to mention how much this dude sounds like Dylan. People say Springsteen, but I hear so much Bob. You don’t necessarily have to get “past” it, but you do kinda have to get used to it. Once you do, the lead guitar will carry you into the clouds. This music will make you contemplate and reflect.
23) Foxing - “Night Channels”
Let’s keep the mood contemplative; you almost feel sleepless if not completely locked in to this one.
UPDATE: This dropped in 2015, /sigh
22) Craig Finn - “God In Chicago”
This is more of a movie than a song -- and the visuals agree. Focus in on the lyrics, take in the story, and then do it again soon because you’ll catch new wrinkles each time. One of the year’s best videos, for sure. Punk News phrases it well: “Here he’s made a solo album of losers who have no idea they’ve already lost.”
21) DJ Khaled f/ Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper, Lil Wayne - “I’m The One”
No one wanted you to know he had sex in 2017 more than DJ Khaled. He made his infant son Asahd the “Executive Producer” for this video. Why? Because he’s an idiot. Khaled’s still existing fame continues to confound. He’s more faux-platitudes than man at his point. So why do the best artists in the world collaborate with someone so seemingly unintelligent? I don’t know, but this song bangs and was probably my Song of the Summer. We got JB on the hook, a dumb-but-amusing Quavo*, Wayne trying to gain footing, and Chance running across the finish line backward with Best Verse title belt. But Khaled won’t let you forget about him, blaring DJ tag and all. This song suffers for that, and it’s all his fault.
(* - his ad lib of just repeating everything becomes charming once you start to get Stockholm Syndrome with the song)
20) Ed Sheeran - “The Shape Of You”
What a 2017 for the man behind the year’s best (super successful) pop song.  At the turn of the calendar, I barely knew who he was, but before we all knew it, there was a legitimate public outcry because he was on “Game of Thrones” for, like, two minutes. What a time. Oh, also, the “Come on, be my baby...” bridge gave me some “Real World: New Orleans” acid flashbacks.
Great meme, take us out.
Tumblr media
19) Minus The Bear - “Last Kiss”
If the shattered neon heart didn’t give it away, this is a “the relationship is definitively over” breakup song. Seeing them play it at Riot Fest made me miss my late friend Luke; I wish he could have heard this.
18) Hot Water Music - “Never Going Back”
I’ve always maintained Chuck Ragan plays guitar and sings songs like a running back. Well, this song carpe diem’s me enough to play actual running back*.
(* - jk, would never do this unless it was against very small children)
17) Lucky Boys Confusion - “Good Luck”
My hometown heroes released their comeback album in 2017, and I’m not sure any track sums up the effort better. By the time Adam sings “Burned out, they call us / Screw ‘em, we got endless memories / Punk rock and the polish / I hope it gave you something to believe”, there are no dry eyes left.
(And yes, this could totally be an AM Taxi song, but with Ryan Fergus’ killer-fills-only drumming, I’m glad it wasn’t.)
16) Hodera - “Baltimore”
This song would likely have a Top 5 objective approval rating of any on the list.
...“The Wire” forever.
15) Iron Chic - “A Headache With Pictures”
It ain’t heavy, it ain’t heaven
If Hot Water Music is carpe diem, what is Iron Chic -- seize the life?! My favorite description of the band came from Sam Sutherland, who tweeted: “Whose day has already been derailed by the unavoidably weighty introspection of listening to the new Iron Chic record.”
They are a certified run-through-brick-walls outfit. One of my final 2017 memories of this song was subtweeting “Now I know” the night I got engaged and having my buddy Ricky think she might’ve declined the proposal. May have to include a ring emoji next time.
14) The Flatliners - “Indoors”
Had to listen to this, like, five or six times before its brilliant greatness overtook me like falling into a river. The chorus is so, so heartfelt.
Don’t sleep on the video, either (especially the end).
13) Sylvan Esso - “Die Young”
Though I have tickets to see them for the first time in 2018, I am not mega-versed in the catalogue of Sylvan Esso. But this feels like their best song. Imagine if Romeo and Juliet turned out OK.
12) Oso Oso - “Shoes (The Sneaker Song)”
Jade from Oso Oso would likely want all of the above stylized in lowercase -- but this ain’t Jade’s list. This was my favorite new band of 2017, and I do believe they made the year’s best album. It’s early-2000s emo at times, pop punk at others, and all ear candy.
11) Sincere Engineer - “Corn Dog Sonnet No. 7″
Staying in the new artist lane, I proudly introduce Sincere Engineer. This band sounds like if Modern Baseball had a little sister. By the time singer Deanna Belos sings “I’m still learning how to be”, you want to pat her on the back and give her all your best advice.
Fantastic music video -- and she confirmed to me this past weekend that it’s real mustard, not puffy paint (“I have a towel that is all yellow from cleaning it up”).
Tumblr media
10) new.wav - “Girls”
Alright, so stick with me on this: new.wav is the band, covering The 1975′s song “Girls” in the style of “Enema of the State”-era blink-182. Confused? Yeah, I was too, but check it out. Maybe more impressive than the arrangements/performance is how they were able to match blink’s production style -- no easy task.
9) Jay-Z - “Family Feud” (starts around 5:30; partial version)
Shawn Corey Carter wants to get right with everyone -- America, his peers, and, of course, within his own home. And though I may never understand the “New n****s is the reason I stopped drinkin’ Dos Equis” lyric, I’m on board with about all else. Similar to the Oso Oso record, “4:44″ is such an album that it feels unfair to single out a song to represent all of its parts. Stripped from the LP, the song does not hit as hard, but in the groove of the record, it’s the apex. And despite Hov seemingly desiring peace, the song does have more than a few call outs:
- “My stash can’t fit into Steve Harvey’s suit” - “And old n****s, y’all stop actin’ brand new / Like 2Pac ain’t have a nose ring too” - “Al Sharpton in the mirror takin’ selfies / How is him or Pill Cosby s’posed to help me?”
In the latter stages of his career, it’s hard to call everything Jay does ‘necessary’, but “4:44″ definitely checked that box.
8) Rozwell Kid - “Wendy’s Trash Can”
Vacillated all year between this one and “Michael Keaton” and literally flipped a penny my cousin Maggie loaned me to decide. “Wendy’s Trash Can” was heads.
7) The Weeknd - “Reminder”
This one got backdoored in as a latter single from The Weeknd’s 2016 album. One of my favorite parts about Abel is how little he has had to change to succeed. Sure, it’s silky smooth, but he hasn’t sacrificed the drugs, darkness, or ego that should offend (but doesn’t because it he pulls it off so well). After bragging early in the song about he won a kids award for singing about cocaine, he calls out peers for biting his sound, blings out his entire crew, and, well:
When I travel 'round the globe, make a couple mil' a show And I come back to my city, I fuck every girl I know
/clutches pearls
6) The Bombpops - “Be Sweet”
The guitar riff in this song is why I fell in love with punk music. Also, super cool story behind the lyrics:
“'Be Sweet' is an homage to our dear friend, the late Brandon Carlisle of the band Teenage Bottlerocket," vocalist Jen Razavi told AP. "Back in 2010, we were partying in a hotel room with Brandon and Ray Carlisle. There was a guitar in the room and Brandon was showing us an idea he had for a song. He had written it for his wife, but he told us we should play it and change the lyrics to 'getting rad with my boyfriend.' He wrote down all the lyrics on four sheets of hotel notepad paper. Since then, the melody and the chord progression were forgotten, but I still had the lyrics. So we wrote our own version of the song in the studio and used every single lyric that Brandon had written down.
Did I mention the video has an “In Bloom” feel? Stop reading, go listen.
5) Action Bronson - “Let Me Breathe”
Action Bronson ain’t givin’ nothin’ up. This is my pick for rap song of the year. It’s got TV brags (”I got two shows, I’m about to pitch another”), a tight chorus (”Let me breathe for a minute / White Range Rover blowin’ trees all in it”), and whimsy shit too (“Honey bouncin’ up and down, she nearly broke my dick”). Ghostface’s disciple is having more fun than just about anyone.
Tumblr media
4) Japandroids - “North East South West”
Only a Canadian band could get me to care this much about my own country. The Vancouver duo penned an Americana ode to the road -- but there’s a twist... they talk about their cities too. For every New Orleans, there’s a Toronto. For every California, a Vancouver.
Maybe they’ll be the ones to end all the border wars.
3) Alex Lahey - “Every Day’s The Weekend”
This is the only submission on the list I’d feel comfortable calling a perfect song. Relatable themes, a chorus that’ll tangle you up, f-bombs in all the right places, and every part maximized. She has this way of weaving between cool confidence and youthful insecurity, all in the matter of one verse.
2) Carly Rae Jepsen - “Cut To The Feeling”
When it comes to “Call Me Maybe” and its legacy, I do not fuck around. This song gets really, really, really close. Just watch this dude.
Queen Carly blessed us with another one. The chorus soars, arms go up, and clouds are your closest companions.
1) The Menzingers - “After The Party”
It's the little things my mind commits / To etch behind my eyelids
When this song dropped, my buddy Dave Rokos called it his favorite Menzos song ever. That felt like high praise, but man, he might be dead on. “After The Party” rips me in half with its lyrics of palpable desperation:
Like a kaleidoscope in vibrant hues I navigate around your tattoos Said you got that one on a whim when you were breaking up with him And that Matryoshka Russian doll That lines your shelf from big to small What a way to start anew To shed your skin and find the old you
If Carly’s chorus flies, this one holds us down like gravity. You feel everything, you feel nothing, you feel full yet voided, but after all of this -- the life, the party, the friends, the bars, the experiences, the nights, the lights, the fights, the city you live in -- it’s still her and you. Or him and you. Or whatever it is you come home to at the end, when it’s finally quiet.

Run The Trap’s Top 25 Remixes Of 2018
2018 was an amazing year for remixes. Official remix packages dominated with artists like Diplo, Marshmello, Alison Wonderland, and RL Grime enlisting the likes of QUIX, 1788-L, Jauz, and more of our favorite up and comers. From throwbacks to chart-toppers, 2018 was flooded with a plethora of monumental remixes. Countdown our top 25 remixes of 2018 below.
Run the Trap’s Top Remixes Of 2018 | SoundCloud Playlist
25. Virtual Self – Angel Voices (LICK Dark Edit)
Rising artist LICK has been on our radar for a minute now thanks to his inventive and unique production. Just after Thanksgiving, he dropped off a dope remix of Virtual Self’s “Angel Voices” original and it’s impressive, to say the least. LICK transformed the track into a dark, midtempo heater ready to go off on any dance floor.
24. Flume – Sleepless (Justice Skolnik Remix)
Taking on Flume‘s 2012 classic “Sleepless” might seem like a daunting task but Justice Skolnik handled it with grace and ease in his imaginative remix. Having released shiny remixes of Kygo, Madeon, and Jai Wolf this year, the up and coming producer flexed his creativity on his “Sleepless” remix, flooding it with glimmering effects and addictive melodies while staying true to the original.
23. Porter Robinson – Sad Machine (KLOUD Remix)
KLOUD made some of the coolest music and music videos of the year. For his final creation of 2018, the masked man took on Porter Robinson‘s classic “Sad Machine”. Remixing a song that’s so beloved is hard to do because you have to stay true to the original but add your own flair. KLOUD perfectly balanced that line with his reinterpretation.
22. Maroon 5 – Girls Like You (feat. Cardi B) [CRAY Remix]
Rising female producer CRAY went off on her first ever official remix. The LA-based producer dropped a banging remix of Maroon 5 and Cardi B‘s “Girls Like You” just in time for her performance at Hard Summer. CRAY’s “Girls Like You” remix is a dreamy future bass wonderland, bouncing with sultry synth melodies and crisp vocal chops. CRAY seriously stepped up with this Maroon 5 remix.
21. Alison Wonderland – Church (Party Pupils Remix)
Future funk duo Party Pupils amazed this year with top-notch remixes of MAX, Matoma, Mickey Valen, and more. Our favorite came as part of Alison Wonderland‘s “Church” remix pack and it’s sensationally groovy. Their remix begins with twinkling, breezy synths, snappy percussion, and a thumping bassline against AW’s airy vocals – the perfect concoction for any Party Pupils classic. Bursting into a vibrant drop, glittery percussion and vivacious synths pour over the track with a Louis The Child-esque flow, making this one of Party Pupils best remixes to date.
20. Panic At The Disco – Say Amen (Saturday Night) [Sweater Beats Remix]
Sweater Beats never fails to deliver knockout remixes. This year he took our middle school dreams to the next level with an official remix that was infested with nostalgia. The LA-based producer was drafted by “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” hitmakers Panic At The Disco to craft a spicy official remix of their single “Say Amen”. Sweater Beats tapped into his sinister side for this one by stringing eerie melodies amidst dark bass lines and crisp percussion. He filled the iconic pop-rock vocals with an ominous soundscape that rumbled into a haunting, grungy drop. Wondrously different from his usual vibrant dance-pop atmospheres, Sweater Beats showed us a refined, Jekyll-like side of himself that will instantly capture your attention.
19. TroyBoi – Flamez (Alexander Lewis Remix)
Alexander Lewis has been wreaking havoc and taking trap to the next level for a minute now. By continuing to take risks, he has become a driving force in today’s music scene with huge trombone flips and high octane sets garnering a legion of fans across the country. This year, Alexander Lewis took on the huge task of flipping TroyBoi’s “Flamez”, and his remix hit all the right notes. Opening with an unbelievable synth lead, Lewis successfully reimagined the original by unleashing a steady stream of scorching trap horns. Paving the way towards a hard-hitting drop, the brass elements add undeniable energy that is contagious.
18. Tiësto & Dzeko – Jackie Chan (feat. Preme & Post Malone) [Tarro Remix]
We’ve heard dozens of Post Malone remixes but one of the finest came from none other than Tarro. Taking on the collaborative hit “Jackie Chan”, Tarro swerved his dark, ominous bass lines, trap-infested snares, and twisting, echoing synths and built it up into a classic Tarro banger. This remains one of our favorite Tarro remixes to date.
17. Dua Lipa – Be The One (KRANE Remix)
Some time ago, KRANE unveiled a second SIDETRACKS SoundCloud page to house “bootlegs, beats and other rarities”, and it came with an impeccable remix of Cashmere Cat, SOPHIE, and MØ’s “9 (After Coachella)”. The SIDETRACKS page remained quiet until KRANE resurrected it with his cinematic future bass take on Dua Lipa’s “Be The One is finally here. Boisterous synths zoom amidst crashing percussion, creating an electrifyingly magnetic soundscape. KRANE seriously outdone himself with this Dua Lipa remix.
16. Mija – Falling ApART (again) [Kill Paris Remix]
Kill Paris had a monumental year preparing for the release of his sophomore album Galaxies Within Us. Amidst his glistening singles, Kill Paris released one of the hottest remixes of the year with his take on Mija‘s “Falling ApART (again)”. Turning the already gorgeous track into an absolute banger, Kill Paris perfectly balanced Mija’s catchy vocals with an electrifying burst of dance pop. Simply put, Kill Paris’ remix is infectious and absolutely sensational.
15. Ed Sheeran – Happier (Kasbo Remix)
Rising Swedish producer Kasbo had a hot year with the release of his debut album Places We Don’t Know and tour supporting ODESZA. To top it off, Kasbo unleashed a stunning official remix of Ed Sheeran‘s “Happier”. Layering airy future bass synths and light percussion around Sheeran’s lush vocals, Kasbo brought a rich, romantic feel to the track. Garnering nearly 7 million Spotify streams, Kasbo’s atmostpheric “Happier” remix is an absolute gem.
14. Khalid & Normani – Love Lies (Snakehips Remix)
Khalid and Normani‘s “Love Lies” was one of the most remixed tracks of the year but Snakehips took the cake with their remix. Their official take on “Love Lies” was stunning, with Japanese-inspired plucked synths tingling against Khalid’s infectious vocals before deep bass and sparkling percussion kick in. Garnering more than 9 million streams on Spotify, it’s easy to understand why Snakehips’ “Love Lies” was definitely one of the best remixes of the year.
13. Diplo – Look Back (feat. DRAM) [QUIX Remix]
QUIX had a monstrous year between his phenomenal debut Illusions EP and his official remixes of RL Grime, Alison Wonderland, but most importantly Diplo. As part of the official California remix pack, QUIX served up a fiery new remix of Diplo and DRAM‘s “Look Back”. Boisterous, anthemic percussion build under DRAM’s R&B performance before spiraling into a dark, ominous trap drop filled with wild synths and dirty bass lines. This is one of QUIX’s finest remixes to date.
12. Sasha Sloan – Ready Yet (San Holo Remix)
San Holo makes the kind of music that you listen to and it never fails to make you smile. His remix for Sasha Sloan was no exception. His light-hearted remix was the perfect reminder that a remix doesn’t need to be a total recreation. The original soul of the song should live on – and San Holo does that perfectly. This remix of Sasha Sloan’s “Ready Yet” has the perfect amount of production while still feeling organic. This is by far one of our all-time favorite San Holo remixes.
11. Family of the Year – Hold Me Down (Autograf Remix)
Official electronic remixes for indie rock originals became a huge fad this year and Autograf did it masterfully. The Chicago based trio spun Family of the Year’s “Hold Me Down” into a dark and twisty house-inspired future bass remix that was absolutely sensational. Echoing vocals rang amidst zippering synth melodies and chilled percussion that instantly pulled you in with its hypnotic rhythm. Autograf flawlessly turned this indie rock original into an electrifying electronic banger.
10. Billie Eilish – MyBoi (TroyBoi Remix)
London based trap producer TroyBoi seriously impressed with his V!BEZ, Vol. 2 EP and his insane official remixes of Keys N Krates and ODESZA. His standout of the year was his flip of Billie Eilish‘s “MyBoi”. TroyBoi spun “MyBoi” into a creation of his own, filling it with wonky, trap-infested synths and smooth, rolling snares. TroyBoi effortlessly turned Billie Eilish’s “MyBoi” into a flirty trap pop banger that carries a rich Cashmere Cat flare. Billie Eilish seriously picked the perfect person to reinvent “MyBoi”.
9. RL Grime – Era (1788-L Remix)
1788-L was one of the biggest breakout artists of the year and for good reason. He collaborated with REZZ, Blanke, and TYNAN, remixed the likes of Illenium and The Glitch Mob, and supported k?d, REZZ, and Ekali on tour. The rising producer closed out the year delivering a monumental remix of RL Grime‘s “Era” as part of the official Nova remix pack. Packed with bombastic and thunderous percussion, glitchy and grimy synths, and an anthemic nature, 1788-L’s version of “Era” is the definition of a trap banger. 1788-L’s “Era” remix is everything we could’ve hoped for.
8. Marshmello – Happier (feat. Bastille) [Jauz Remix]
Jauz was tapped by Marshmello to flip his Bastille-featured hit “Happier” and he crafted a masterpiece that truly stood out. Taking a softer, slower approach to the hit track, Jauz flooded the track with dark, ethereal basslines and glitchy, percussion. Jauz showed a side of himself that is absolutely stunning and breathtakingly beautiful.
7. Cardi B – I Like It (Dillon Francis Remix)
Dillon Francis had a massive year between releasing his new Wut Wut album and producing Panic At The Disco’s “Hey Look Ma, I Made It”. To top it all off, the iconic producer unleashed a crazy official remix of Cardi B‘s “I Like It”. Dillon Francis gave the track this Latin-inspired trap vibe that perfectly amped the song into a fiery club hit. This is definitely one you’ll be hearing at festivals for years to come.
6. Halsey – Without Me (Illenium Remix)
Illenium is known for his empowering remixes of Marshmello’s “Silence” and Flume’s “Say It“. Mere weeks following his highly anticipated Call Me Karizma collaboration, Illenium returned with one of the biggest remixes of the year. Premiered earlier at EDC Orlando, Illenium’s massive remix of Halsey‘s heartbreaking new single “Without Me” was everything we could’ve hoped for. Opening with a breezy guitar melody and gentle, rolling snares, Illenium wrapped Halsey’s effervescent vocals in a gorgeous atmospheric soundscape before dropping into a synth and vocal chop heavy break. Illenium’s “Without Me” remix was instantly a contender for best remix of the year.
5. Post Malone – I Fall Apart (Medasin Remix)
Medasin garnered millions of plays across his official remixes of Portugal. The Man’s “Feel It Still” and DJ Khaled’s “Wild Thoughts”, making him a go-to producer when it comes to remixing the hottest chart-toppers. We’ve seen quite a few remixes of Post Malone‘s “I Fall Apart” this year but Medasin’s definitely stands out as the leader of the pack. The Dallas based producer pumped the track with vibrating, electrifying synths that shimmer under Post Malone’s echoing ethereal vocals. Medasin crafted a soulful future R&B banger that is effortlessly gooey and easy to love.
4. Ekali & ZHU – Blame (NGHTMRE Remix)
In one of his most magical remixes to daye, NGHTMRE took on Ekali and ZHU‘s massive collaborative single “Blame”. NGHTMRE flipped the track on its head, breathing this enticing futuristic soulful trap vibe into the banger. Addictive melodies merged seamlessly with ZHU’s chopped up vocals while hard hitting bass drops, firey synths, and bold trap horns gave the remix a much harder hit. NGHTMRE crafted an unimaginable banger with this remix.
3. Porter Robinson – Divinity (REZZ Remix)
REZZ had a massive year but she truly turned heads with the announcement of her Porter Robinson remix. First debuted at a show in Montreal, REZZ has now unleashed her fiery remix of Porter Robinson’s Worlds hit “Divinity”. REZZ reworks the atmospheric original into a dynamite trap banger and it’s magically stunning. Glitchy basslines rumble around crisp percussion and ethereal vocals to create a ghostly, slightly sinister soundscape. REZZ has does nothing short of impressing us with her “Divinity” remix.
2. Calvin Harris – One Kiss (feat. Dua Lipa) [ZHU Remix]
ZHU had a huge year between his phenomenal Ringos Desert album and his jaw-dropping official remix of Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa‘s “One Kiss“. Transforming the song of the summer, ZHU put his classic noir sound on the track. He added his own cover of the vocal to create a stellar layered version of the track.
1. Pendulum – The Island, Pt. 1 (Dawn) [Skrillex Remix]
Remixing Pendulum‘s “The Island” is no laughing matter as the track serves as one of the most anthemic records in electronic music history. Since its release, many remixes have come and gone, so the expectations for this remix were incredibly high. Leave it up to Skrillex to completely knock it out of the park with his refreshing future bass rework. His rendition offers a complete facelift that’ll leave nothing but a bubbly impression. That prominent melody we all fell in love with reigns supreme as it’s given the reggae treatment. Complemented by Rob Swire‘s vocals, listeners are hit with an assortment of saw waves that only Skrillex could perfect. An easy standout of the year, Skrillex’s “Pendulum” takes the cake with the #1 slot on our list.

Samsung just held its Galaxy S Series Unpacked 2018 event in the city of Barcelona, Spain. The South Korean giant officially unveiled the much-anticipated and long-awaited Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ to mark the beginning of MWC 2018. Rather than holding a private event as it has done for flagship smartphone announcements in recent years, the company bypassed the idea in favor of a return to old times by showcasing its new flagship pair at a trade show in front of lots more people. As usual, there was a livestream, and we have all the information for you. Here’s a full roundup that should answer all if not most of your questions about Samsung’s “Next big thing,” the Galaxy S9.
[smoothslider id=’7′]
Since the very beginning, Samsung’s Galaxy S Series has brought industry firsts, and this year’s Galaxy S9 duo is no stranger with changes in design and added features. Samsung has yet again positioned itself well among the late 2017 and early 2018 global competition, and we think you’re going to like what it has in store for this year.
Despite a major set back in 2016 that took a hit to the company’s brand image, Samsung hit all-time highs in 2017 and looks to continue the success it achieved, in 2018. Samsung continues to drive innovation forward and push the boundaries of what’s possible in mobile, this time with a ninth product installment. Like every year, fans and power users around the globe look forward to the arrival of Samsung’s newest phone, and market competitors never fail to take cues. Leaks, rumors and reports indicated what to expect, but Samsung managed to keep a few secrets.
In 2017, Samsung reached new heights. A higher than ever stock price was hit, and profits soared just about all year-long. Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 were two of the top-selling smartphones globally in just about every market, and even broke some of the company’s own sales records. Unfortunately, the same can not be said about other Android manufacturers such as LG and HTC, who continue to struggle in earning a profit. The two competitors also seem like they’ll skip MWC 2018, thanks to Samsung taking over all the attention. Perfection has always been the goal for Samsung, so few comprises were made in making the Galaxy S9.
With Galaxy S9, Samsung has provided enough change to keep buyers hungry for the latest and greatest, and that starts with design. Samsung has invested years of experience to engineer best in-class hardware. The Galaxy S9 comes with a 5.8-inch display while the larger Galaxy S9+ has a 6.2-inch screen. Both are Super AMOLED 18.5:9 Infinity displays with a Quad HD+ resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The AMOLED screen technology has been tuned to offer the best possible quality with high contrast, exceptional brightness for outdoor visibility, and true to life colors. Both handsets support HDR Video and are IP68 certified against water and dust.
The Galaxy S9 models are downright beautiful, even more so than last year’s models with Samsung’s curved dual-edge panels that make for a high screen-to-body ratio. The top and bottom bezels have been shrunken down even more to match what the competition has been able to do. Plus, the smaller Galaxy S9 can be controlled using a single hand. Around the handset is a combination of familiar metal and glass, which melt into each other giving to a rounded back. The devices are clean with an invisible home button instead of a physical key, and contain few logos. There is no fingerprint reader below the glass, but Samsung has relocated it to a more accessible spot centered on back below the camera to satisfy users who hated the positioning found on Galaxy Note 8.
This year’s handsets once again feature an 18.5:9 aspect ratio, which is becoming the norm for high-end Android flagships. It’s taller and narrower than 16:9 and shows more content on the screen at once. The latest version of Samsung Experience UI makes good use of it despite a major drawback in that of letter-boxing while watching video. Inside the Galaxy S9 models will be Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor with Quick Charge 2.0 (via USB Type-C), making these phones first to include the ultra high-end unit. However, buyers in some countries will get an in-house Exynos 9810 chipset, expected to perform similarity. Also present will be 2GB of extra RAM at 6GB total for the larger Galaxy S9+ model, and 4GB total for the smaller Galaxy S9. 3,000mAh (Galaxy S9) and 3,500mAh (Galaxy S9+) batteries are included (with air gap and 8-point check!) with Qi for fast wireless charging.
Storage will start at 64GB for both variants, which is a huge plus taken from the Galaxy Note 8. Samsung will also offer 128GB and 256GB capacities at an added cost, despite all models coming with microSD card expansion (up to 256GB extra). This port along with a SIM card tray, power button, and volume controls have been placed along the sides of each handset with addition to a hardware button for Bixby, which uses machine learning and AI to create a personalized and ever-improving experience. A much-needed update is coming to the voice assistant, but it’s not version 2.0 just yet. This will bring a handful of useful features including Live Translation, Food Identification including automatic plugging in of nutrition details, the ability to make purchases (only in US, Canada, Korea, China), and even try on clothes or makeup virtually. Some of these could also make way to older generation models. On back is that fingerprint scanner as well as an enhanced Heart Rate Monitor that can now measure pressure. On front is a new Samsung Intelligent Scan that combines both Iris and Facial recognition. MST and NFC are also inside for Samsung Pay, the most widely accepted form of mobile payment out there.
On the camera side of things for the first time in a while for Samsung, we have a split. The Galaxy S9 features a single 12MP rear shooter while the Galaxy S9+ sports a dual rear camera arrangement similar to the Galaxy Note 8. Both have a dedicated DRAM chip capable of processing 4 times as much info and include Dual Pixel Multi-Frame processing, OIS (photos and videos), dual LED flash, minimal protrude, a 1.4µm pixel size, 2X zoom, and auto-adjusting Dual Aperture (f/1.5 – f/2.4) for low-light, which maxes at the widest aperture ever included in a smartphone camera. However, only the big brother has an additional 12MP telephoto lens for shooting depth and wide-angle. As for selfie cameras, both models have the same 8MP lens, which is also the same as last year’s models. It’s capable of shooting 4K and 60fps, 1080p video. It comes with smart auto-focusing and OIS.
Samsung’s newest flagships get it right when it comes to software with Android 8.0 Oreo. The duo will also jump to the front of the pack for monthly security patch updates. Some of the latest features from Google include new notifications, performance and battery improvements by further restricting background data, picture-in-picture mode, new adaptive icons, and system-wide auto-fill. Also on board is the Google Assistant, which will come in addition to Bixby Voice. Both assistants will learn about you using incorporated fifth-generation programming technology. To top everything off, Samsung’s updated Experience UI is present atop Android that’s now lighter and faster than before ever. It entails a newly-designed SmartThings app, support for Google AR Core, and enhanced security with KNOX that’s enterprise ready. There are also new AR Emoji that use AI so you can create and personalize emoji that look like you. You can even add audio to them, choose from 18 generated creations, share with anyone you want even over some third-party social apps, and, turn yourself into a Disney character.
Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ introduce a handful of new features. The camera app has been touched up with AR features that use Bixby and Live Focus is here to, a mode for taking profile pictures that blurs any background in real-time and is adjustable post-shot. There’s also 960fps Super Slow-Mo with Auto capture, which can be used in conjunction with background music, be played in reverse, set as your lockscreen, and even turned into GIF images. App Pairing is new to Samsung’s S Series this year and allows one to pin two apps to Apps Edge for dual window access.
Both Galaxy S9 phones also come with Harman and Dolby Atmos high-quality audio through both an included 3.55mm headphone jack and new stereo sound top and bottom speakers, which are the loudest ever in Galaxy phone. This should give the pair wider amplitude, clearer treble, and deeper bass. As was the case last year, Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ come with a pair of Harman AKG audio headphones ($99 value) in the box. Bluetooth 5.0, 802.11/a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, and the various fitness sensors you’ll need to track exercise are all here as well, though support for Google Daydream, the virtual reality platform from Google, seems to have been left out of the equation, at least for now. But there’s always Gear VR!
With Galaxy S9, Samsung is putting competitors on notice for a great 2018 year. The company will release its new flagships alongside an Enterprise Edition globally on March 16 in over 100 countries, and pre-orders will begin on March 2. This is a bit earlier than usual. The handsets will be available on most US cell carriers and there will be an unlocked model as well to be sold by Samsung and select retailers. As a reminder, buyers can sign up for ‘Samsung Premium Care,’ which is essentially an insurance program allowing for the return of the device for a full refund, or, a screen replacement with the only cost being a small monthly fee. Pricing for the unlocked models has been set at $719 or $30/month with 24 months financing for the Galaxy S9, while the Galaxy S9+ will go for $839 or $35/month with 24 months financing. With all these lower-priced premium mid-range phones from companies such as Huawei and OnePlus, the new Galaxy phones might be a tough sell. It’ll surely be interesting to see how the market responds. Hopefully there will be some free goodies.
Samsung’s newest Galaxy phones have a Black front and come in choice of Midnight Black, Lilac Purple, Coral Blue, and Titanium Gray color options for the rear. However, availability of these will vary by location and carrier. The handsets will release in stores on March 16. We’ll have a separate post detailing availability, all the deals and the handset’s release information. Be sure to bookmark this page and return back as the news continues to pile up. We asked some of the bands that play 7eventytwo some questions. These are those questions.
How long have you been a band? Where do you rehearse?  Do you believe in love at first sight?
The Sectionals
We’ve been playing together for nearly 5 years. I believe in lust at first sight. - Sofia
We either practice at my house or at a studio, and no, I don’t believe in love at first sight. - Mick
I don’t believe in love at first sight. - Cyan
Tell us briefly about a new-ish song and when/how did you write it. What’s it about?
We have a new song called NASA which is pretty good. I’m looking forward to jamming on it. It’s a fun song to play – Mick
It’s one of only couple of songs we have that was born out of a fun jam; I think, whether or not they're the best songs, those ones are the most fun for us to play - Cyan NASA is just me being bitter towards a guy I like. There’s no reason behind the bitterness on his part, I’m just sarcastic as hell to avoid him from seeing the real me. – Sofia
If you could work with any producer on your next album, alive or dead, who would it be?
I’m just gonna say I wanna work with DJ Khaled, he seems fun. - Mick
I’d love to work with George Daniel of The 1975, he creates the most unique soundscapes. I also would kill to work with Brian Wilson… He hears the unheard. – Sofia
I would love to work with Blake Mills as a producer. He's a genius with complicated sounds, and he's still very much alive so it's not impossible. – Cyan
Whats been a favorite new album of 2017 and what's shaping up to be a major summer jam for you?
I JUST listened to Lorde’s ‘Melodrama’ and it is such a great pop record. Also Blaenavon’s ‘That’s Your Lot’ and Jay Som’s ‘Everybody Works.’ My summer jam as of now is “Saw You in a Dream” by The Japanese House.  - Sofia
my favorite album of 2017 so far would have to be No Shape by Perfume Genius. But honestly i haven't listened to enough of this years albums because I'm still catching on last years! A really underrated album from last year was Beyond the Fleeting Gales by Crying; if that one could carry over into 2017 I'd choose that. Also this is an old-ish song but cash machine by dram is a bop if I’ve ever heard one, and I've been listening to it on repeat for the past few days. - Cyan
Lil Yachty's newest album and the single "bring it back" is my new hot summer jam. Joking. – Mick
If a few years from now you were to come back to be a celebrity judge at a 72 battle of the bands, what would you look for in the battle winner?
I’d look for charisma. I want a band that I can sense is deeply connected and tight in playing together, and can communicate a cool vibe to the crowd. - Sofia
If I were a judge I'd look for something new but paying respects to the old but not corny. – Mick
It’s really cool when you can see artists who are really imaginative, and can still be creative within a certain tradition. - Cyan

Blu Ray Poppin’
How long have you been a band? Where do you rehearse?  Do you believe in love at first sight?
We have been a band for about two and a half years. We have band practice at our guitarists place in SoHo. Interestingly enough, we are firm believers in the whole "love at first sight" concept. Alejandro (guitar) and Kabir (Drum set, Marimba, Xylophone, Timpani, Vibraphone, congas, egg shaker, and castanets) met on the first day of high school and instigated the concept of creating a musical union between the two of them.  Soon after, Rafail (Keys) was invited to join the band. So yes. We believe in love at first sight.
Tell us briefly about a new-ish song and when/how did you write it. What’s it about?
A new song that we enjoy playing is a tune called "Fake News". We wrote it early 2017. At the time, Alejandro showed Kabir a cool guitar melody that could potentially turn into a song idea. Later that day, Rafail showed Kabir a really groovy bass line, and so at band practice later that day, Kabir had the idea to combine the two.  Since the tune was written in January, it obviously had some influence from the inauguration of our most recent Commander in Chief. The melody of the tune has an impish, pseudo-satirical tone that is meant to replicate the the bipartisan media frenzy that swept America by storm earlier this year. And that's how "Fake News" was written.
If you could work with any producer on your next album, alive or dead, who would it be?
If we could work with any producer, it would be Flying Lotus. His influence on modern music today cannot be ignored. He's worked with so many of our favorite artists like Kendrick Lamar and Thundercat. He's helped artists achieve their full potential in a studio, a task that sounds easy on paper, but that can take a lifetime to achieve.
Whats been a favorite new album of 2017 and what's shaping up to be a major summer jam for you?
So far in 2017, our favorite album has been More Life by Drake. We really love how he combines Trap and R n' B to create a melting pot of intricate, yet quaint musical resonance. A summer jam that we are currently vibing to is 'Hudson', a modern jazz album written by John Scofield, John Madeski, Larry Grenadier, and Jack Dejohonette. It's great to see jazz evolve into such a seamless linchpin of ideas and the album has certainly influenced us.
If a few years from now you were to come back to be a celebrity judge at a 72 battle of the bands, what would you look for in the battle winner?
If we were to be judges for 72 battle of the bands we would be looking for fusion of genres. In today's world the most interesting music comes from the mismatching of genres. Doing this creates a feeling of originality. We love hearing new artists push boundaries.

ASUS ROG Maximus IX Formula Motherboard Review
We have a peek at the Mac Daddy of the ASUS Z270 motherboards, let's all hail the ASUS Maximus IX Formula from the Republic of Gamers line. The board boasts everything you want and need, has a deep and profound AURA LED lighting system, is all shielded, comes with VRM area water-block from EK and then some. Though very little RGB bling is injected, this motherboard is compatible with the new generalized ASUS AURA SYNC, which is a software suite that allows for multiple choices in additional RGB gear to be driven from that one package.
Product Showcase
The ASUS motherboard follows a standard ATX form factor (30.5 x 24.4cm). The motherboard is located in the ROG high-end range of the Skylake and Kaby Lake desktop processor product stack.
Right, ROG time, the really good stuff. The Maximus has that chic look, shields everywhere as well as an M.2 slot hidden under that lower cover and a secondary one with a vertical mount (we'll show ya!). The motherboard comes with LED RGB AURA SYNC and is independently configurable throughout the motherboard or compatible connected LED devices (these can be controlled with AURA software).  Next to that, great shielded looks and a certain military feel pops out due to a tint of green/grey in the black design.
Included with the motherboard are the regulars including; manuals, driver CDs, SATA cables and a rear I/O plate. It also has a couple of new features which we'll talk about in-depth in this review.
CPU support: Skylake / Kaby Lake class Intel Core processors
Chipset: Intel Z270 Chipset
1x Gigabit: Ethernet Intel Gbe I219-V / I211
1x WIFI 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac 2.4/5 Ghz and Bluetooth 4.1 compatible
Storage:
2 x M.2 Socket connectors (Optane supported) (one is vertical!)
6 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors
Connectivity:
3x PCI-E 3.0 x16  (single at x16 / dual at x8 / triple at x8 - x8 - x4)
3x PCI-E 3.0 x1
USB 3.0 / 3.1
8-channel ALC S1220A Realtek chip
The I/O back panel reveals a combo of 3.1/3.0/2.0 ports. The audio unit has special noise reducing capacitors and shielding sitting next to that Realtek chip. You will spot one 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet jack. Missing is a PS/2 keyboard/mouse combo port. Audio wise we spot an optical S/PDIF out port and five audio jacks. If you plan to use the integrated IGP of the processor, you can make use of one HDMI DisplayPort connector. The rear connectivity back-panel is loaded full, nice. Also present are clear CMOS and BIOS flashback buttons.
Included in the bundle is one interesting looking motherboard and gear like SATA cables, extra connectors and so on. ASUS again included a simple but proper HB SLI bridge connector and a really good dual-band WIFI antenna.
The board has 3 x physical PCIe 3.0 x16 slots which can be arranged in these slot configurations with graphics cards:
1-way mode - x16 / x0 / x0
2-way mode - x8 / x8 / x0
3-way mode - x8 / x8 / x4
As you can see, these are PCI Express Gen 3.0 configurations, that's plenty for regular graphics card setups up-to 2-way SLI/Crossfire. The motherboard comes with one 8-pin power connector. You'll get four DIMM slots that can be used for up-to 64GB of dual-channel memory up-to even 4000 MHz supported in OC mode. We'll actually test a new 3866 MHz Trident Z kit from G.Skill which we'll feature in detail in this review.
Back Panel I/O Ports
1 x HDMI port
1 x Display Port
1 x BIOS Flashback button
1x Clear CMOS button
Multiple USB 3.1/3.0/2.0 ports (the black ones are all 2.0) all based on ASMedia and Intel type A and C.
1 x RJ-45 ports (Intel Gbit)
1 x optical S/PDIF Out connector
5 x audio jacks (Center/Subwoofer Speaker Out, Rear Speaker Out, Line In/Mic In, Line Out, Headphone)
WIFI Antenna jacks
Notice something unusual? Yes, the motherboard comes with a pre-mounted / pre-fitted rear I/O plate. I like that.
The Z270 motherboard will get you six Intel chipset based SATA 6 Gb/s storage ports. Combined in here are two M.2 PCI Express slots using x4 PCIe lanes, giving these (Optane compatible) ports not 10 GB/sec but 32 GB/sec of performance. There are plenty of USB 3.0 and 3.1 ports available through internal motherboard connectors, some Intel based, some Asmedia ASM2142 powered. BTW the industry calls USB 3.0 / USB 3.1 Gen 1 these days, a little misleading TBH. USB 3.1 Gen 2 would be the new and proper 10 Gbps connectors. This motherboard has both gen 1 and 2 connectors and thus you get at least 5 Gbps speed.
Here we can see the four DIMM slots which offer support for dual-channel DDR4 memory up to even 4000 MHz (OC). If you activate the XMP 2.0 profile in the BIOS, your memory will be automatically configured for you at its maximum clock speed and recommended voltage. You can install a maximum of 64 GB in total. Again, XMP 2.0 must be supported, we'll show you this setup running at 2133 and extremely high XMP frequency measurements later on in the article.
To the right you can spot a physical power and reset button as well as a diagnostic POST LED. You'll also find lots of fan headers hidden all over the board. I counted at least seven of them with a dedicated one for LCS coolers as well.
Yep, you may unleash some more power with graphics configurations. Support for up to 3 full length discrete VGA cards. Mind you, we can only recommend you to go with 2x multi-GPU. Three cards would bog down the 3rd card at a x4 link where two cards would both get x8 Gen 3.0 PCIe links. ASUS is doing it right, they include a High-Bandwidth SLI connector.
So if you are installing an M.2 SSD, you do not have to worry about the PCB color anymore as you can hide it. Designed to be compatible with any length of M.2 SSD. Look at the lower latch.
Simply pop the M.2 SSD in and close the lid. ASUS includes just one location where you can hide it, see that lower connector? The other, well, ehm... have a peek at the photo below. Yup, that is a vertically mounted M.2 unit. You will receive a mounting kit here, but quite frankly I cannot for the life of me consider using an M.2 unit that way. Then again, for some quick action it might be handy.
2 x M.2 Socket 3 connectors
6 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors
Let me repeat it again: Bless you ASUS, they understand it. You will not find any U2 storage connector or SATA Express connectors here. Hurrah! BTW to the far left, an easy to access vertical M.2 connector for an OC session or quick firmware upgrade, right?
The audio solution is based on a Realtek ALC 1220 CODEC, ASUS however has upgraded the circuitry and applied their ROG Supreme FX audio suite to it including an ES9023P HD DAC alongside nice headphone connectivity slash quality. You can spot high audio grade fine gold capacitors. Fine gold capacitors are suited for high-grade audio equipment to provide rich sound in the bass and clearer high frequencies. There's little else to say really, the audio solution is fine and is rated at a 110 dB SNR.
Once you zoom in at the motherboard you'll find micro switches, buttons and FAN connectors everywhere. Also you will spot some LED RGB connectors so that you can add LED strips or other components that are LED controlled to the AURA infrastructure to control it.
Just one 8-pin connector to power that processor of yours, but it should be plenty though. The motherboard has (I think I spotted) a 10+2 phase power delivery design for the processor based on digital power controllers. ASUS, as always, follows their stringent component selection. The VRM area is covered up in some places so the phases are a bit hard to count. 10 here + 2 or 4 for memory really. So did you spot the round buttons in the VRM shielding? Next photo:
Yes indeed, you can mount fittings here and add this EK water-block to your liquid cooling loop. Obviously it is not needed at all as air cooling really is fine with such a big lump of copper sitting on top of it, good stuff though.
The Light LED System
So we need to dedicate a page to the RGB LED system on this motherboard as it is rather unique and a primary feature of this product. It might only be LEDs but it is a big chunk of what this product is all about. One of the more cool LED functions is an RGB configurable LED that points at your DRAM which you can then light up and color to your preference. Throughout the motherboard, hidden under the heatsink and shielding, are LED arrays. These are actually color configurable and called AURA, new is however AURA SYNC.
We do like the ASUS Aura SYNC initiative. Previously, the software was only able to control individual computer hardware such as LED lighting on the motherboard and additional RGB LEDs within the PC case connected to the motherboard. With the new synchronization capabilities, various hardware components' RGB lighting control can be controlled via a single AURA software interface. The LEDs can be configured as ON / OFF with just one color of your preference, but also you can select animations. There's an Aura RGB Strip Header on the motherboard as well which you can use to connect a compatible LED strip to. Basically you install the AURA application and you will notice new features:
Photos, I can tell you, do not do any justice so I made a quick video demonstrating some options and LED animations. Have a peek at the video to get a bit of an idea what the Light LED system is all about. So, the video below serves as an example of what you can relate to LED wise based on the motherboard. Alternatively, you can turn the LEDs off as well.

Power Consumption
In an IDLE state, a PC (motherboard (Z270) / processor / memory / SSD) consumes roughly 45 Watts. Once we add a GeForce GTX 1080 we see an increase of roughly 8~10 Watts. This number depends and will vary per motherboard (added ICs / controllers / wifi / bluetooth) and PSU (efficiency). Keep in mind that we measure the ENTIRE PC, not just the processor's power consumption. Your average PC can differ from our numbers if you add optical drives, HDDs, soundcards etc.
As always I want to make it very clear that power consumption measurements will differ per PC and setup. Your attached components use power but your motherboard can also have additional ICs installed like an audio controller, 3rd party chips, network controllers, extra SATA controllers, extra USB controllers, and so on. These parts all consume power, so these results are a subjective indication. Next to that, we stress all CPU cores 100% and thus show peak power consumption. Unless you transcode video with the right software your average power consumption will be much lower.
Overall stress/load temperatures are very nice with temps at the ~47 C marker. These, of course, are default results and not tweaked. The processor idles at roughly 30 Degrees C. We used a fairly dated but good Corsair H110 here for cooling. Overall we are very content with the temperature results here.
The Processors
We'll address some key aspects and a technical overview of the technology and architecture first. Chances are good that you have already learned about this information over time. Right, let's step back a few generations and start at Sandy Bridge at 32nm. Sandy Bridge really was a completely new architecture, its successor Ivy Bridge did share a lot of common denominators. When we look at Sandy versus Ivy Bridge, the foremost complicating factor was moving the architecture towards a smaller production node; Ivy Bridge is a 22nm processor series. Haswell then, is a 22nm product yet based on a FinFET process that uses a non-planar transistor that sits around the gate on three sides. Built using a 22nm process, Haswell is the "tick" in Intel's "tick-tock" development cycle, so Ivy Bridge was just a process size shrink from Sandy Bridge's 32nm to 22nm.
  CPU Core i7-7700K Core i5-7600K Core i7-6700K Core i5-6600K Core i7-4790K Core i7-4770K Codename Kaby Lake Kaby Lake Skylake Skylake Haswell Haswell Package LGA1151 LGA1151 LGA1151 LGA1151 LGA1150 LGA1150 Cores/threads 4/8 4/4 4/8 4/4 4/8 4/8 Frequency(GHz) 4.2-4.5 3.8-4.2 4.0-4.2 3.5-3.9 4.0-4.4 3.5-3.9 memory DDR4-2133 DDR4-2133 DDR4-2133 DDR4-2133 DDR3-1600 DDR3-1600 IGP Intel HD 630 Intel HD 630 Intel HD 530 Intel HD 530 Intel HD 4600 Intel HD 4600 L3 Cache 8MB 6MB 8MB 6MB 8MB 8MB Fab 14nm 14nm 14nm 14nm 22nm 22nm Unlocked multiplier Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes TDP 91W 91W 91W 91W 84W 95W
Then a jump to 14nm, Broadwell is a Tick in the release schedule to be followed by a Tock, Skylake. For Skylake several things changed, an increasingly more powerful graphics engine and that fabrication shrink to the 14nm node, this allows for an even more power friendly processor. There's another TOCK though, that is Kaby Lake, a respin at 14nm.
For this motherboard review we will use the unlocked Core i5 7600K.

Of course there will be a distinction per processor segment with the 5th generation (i3/i5/i7). What you get in terms of features and what you need to remember limitation wise:
Desktop Core i7 processors have four cores / eight hyper-threads / Up to 8 MB L3 cache
Desktop Core i5 processors have four cores / NO hyper-threading / Up to 6 MB L3 cache
Desktop Core i3 processors have two cores (unannounced)
All models will come with the latest revision turbo mode but only the Core i7 series will be capable of handling multiple independent software threads per core, also known as hyper-threading. It's a feature we like very much as it really helps out on peak performance by allowing a processor to execute two different code streams at pretty much the same time.

Quite a few processors will be based on Kaby Lake, we focus on desktop, let's have a closer look.
Core i5-7600K and i7-7700K
Both models released are unlocked (multiplier & voltage) quad-core processors based on the aforementioned architecture and supersedes the Core 4000 and 6000 processor range (in design). The Core i7 model has hyper-threading and your OS will see it as an 8-core product. The CPU has 1 MB L2 cache (256 KB per physical core). Then there is an 8MB shared L3 cache. The integrated memory controller remains dual-channel, officially supporting up-to 2400MHz, but we all know how high these puppies can clock. The TDP for this processor is now rated at 91 Watts. The Core i5 model is a fairly similar product, yet clocked a notch slower at a 3.8 GHz base clock and 4.2 GHz Turbo allowance. This processor, as stated, does not have hyper-threading. Also it has slightly less L3 cache at its disposal, 6 MB.
Core i7 7700K - 4 cores and Hyper-Threading, 4.2 GHz frequency, 4.5 GHz maximum Turbo Boost frequency, 8MB last-level cache, dual-channel DDR3/DDR4 memory controller with 1600MHz, 2133MHz or 2400MHz support, Intel HD Graphics 630-series integrated graphics core, LGA1151 packaging.
Core i5 7600K - 4 cores, 3.80GHz frequency, 4.20GHz maximum Turbo Boost frequency, 6MB last-level cache, dual-channel DDR3/DDR4 memory controller with 1600MHz, 2133MHz or 2400MHz support, Intel HD Graphics 630-series integrated graphics core, LGA1151 packaging.
There will be more variants available later this year though (bear in mind that we do not have a final list of supported clock frequencies so the table below will be updated once the numbers get in:

The Kaby Lake cache memory consists of a 32 KB L1 Data cache, 32 KB Instruction cache (= 64 KB L1) and then we spot a 256 KB L2 cache per core (1MB total) and then there's a L3 cache that is shared in-between the CPU cores which is 8 MB in total for the Core i7 processors and 6 MB for the Core i5 series. This has been the same for many generation Intel processors in this class.
The L3 cache sits in the physical form of a ring-bus. Thus the L3 cache can be used by the processor cores and also the graphics core. You can house the new processors on motherboards with the H270 and Z270 chipset and will be introduced later on other business oriented chipsets as well. The H170/Z170 chipsets are compatible after a motherboard BIOS update. For end consumers like you and me the H series chipset is less performance targeted and comes with better support for HTPC monitor connectivity. The Z series chipset is targeted at performance and enthusiast end users allowing much more tweaking and providing performance features. It also brings USB 3.1, SATA Express and PCIe M.2 SSD connectivity to the platform.
Final words & conclusion
The Maximus IX Formula is a thing of beauty, in fact it might be even too nice for a mainstream quad-core processor platform. Still, Kaby Lake is bound to deliver enough performance for another year or two and combined with the features this Maximus IX Formula is offering you could build something really nice. Obviously you'll receive all the benefits from the new Z270, so let's just focus on the extras that ASUS offers as there are quite a few. First and foremost I have to admit that I love the design with all the shielding. That shielding doesn't limit features as there are plenty of extra buttons and fan connectors on the board. Then stuff like the ability to liquid cool the VRM area, the two niche M.2 slots and the excellent WIFI solution that ASUS offers. The motherboard is properly functional, offers all tweaking options you need, two M.2 slots (albeit the vertical one is a bit of a loss really) and furthermore offers everything you'd need for a proper Z270 platform, including an Intel Gigabit WLAN connector. Despite my somewhat salted view of Kaby Lake (no real gain over Skylake) in general I do have to say that the motherboard manufacturers did a lovely job with the new ranges being released. This Maximus IX Formula will cost 400 USD, but please do realize that you will get the very same tweaking results as a 200 USD/ Euro range motherboard, your processor and cooling are the decisive factor here, not the motherboard. The ease of use with XMP memory rocks, the UEFI BIOS is just very advanced. If you have upgraded in the last year or two to a new PC, well, the upgrade remains a hard sell. This motherboard however does have aesthetic improvements as well as your platform will be upgraded towards full compatibility with USB 3.1 (10 Gbps) as well as two M.2 slots.
The RGB trend
Strangely enough, January 2017 motherboard releases are all about RGB LEDs. Personally I like the implementations at hand and do like RGB LED bling. The reality is also that after a day or two of constant LED animations and flickering RGB LEDs inside a system, that constant light movement will wear you out, and yes, it can get annoying even. In the end (we feel) people are going to choose simply one color and after a week leave that enabled in a static mode and probably never look back. I am saying this because you need realize that you are paying extra for complex RGB systems, and for you to spend that money the RGB LED systems need to be of massive interest. I mean, this is a 400 USD motherboard, that in the end can do just as much with nearly the same features as a 200 USD one, and that is the reality. That said, we certainly like the ASUS Aura SYNC initiative. Previously, the software was only able to control individual computer hardware such as LED lighting on the motherboard and additional RGB LEDs within the PC case connected to the motherboard. With the new synchronization capabilities, various hardware components' RGB lighting control can be controlled via a single AURA software interface.
Performance & tweaking
The overall performance for this ASUS Maximus IX Formula motherboard with a Core i5 7600K I'd rate as 'excellent' for the results as tested with a Core i5 7600K. Temps remain very acceptable (depending on choice of cooling) and temperatures when the CPU is overclocked with added voltage definitely seem to be a notch better opposed to Haswell and Skylake. We have been able to reach 5.0 GHz stable enough on liquid cooling. At that level you are looking at up-to 1.35V needed on that CPU core. Bear in mind that ALL, seriously, ALL Z270 motherboards we have tested reach exactly 5 Ghz on the Core i5 7600K. Meaning the processor and cooling are the decisive factor when it comes to generic overclocking and tweaking, not your motherboard so much.
Power consumption
If we step back and take the Intel reference board with a Sandy Bridge processor (2600K) without a dedicated graphics card, that platform idled at roughly 50 Watts. Once we stress the processor 100% on that platform we'd see ~120 Watts power consumption. With Kaby Lake (7600K) we noticed roughly 40 Watts in idle and 100 Watts with processor load at 100%. Things again remain relative.
The bottom line
The ASUS ROG Maximus IX Formula is a terrific motherboard loaded with features that got stripped from the stuff we do not use anyway. SATA Express and U2? Not on this motherboard, good as it makes room on that PCB for stuff that actually matters like two M.2 slots, extra USB connectors, extra FAN headers and so on. ASUS offers something really special here albeit the vertical M.2 slot once again does not compute in my brain, it just is not a sexy solution for long term usage. You'll have plenty of USB, display, M.2 and storage connectors. You'll purchase a motherboard with a nice audio solution that got optimized with an ASUS software suite. Like it or not, the LED RGB system with AURA software works nicely, but we do wonder much people are willing to pay extra for such intricate features. The AC WIFI is lovely to see and work with, it is proper fast when configured properly. We do miss 10 GBit Ethernet jacks, it would be nice to see the industry move forward with on-board jacks as slowly but steadily the Gigabit jack is maxing out (much like the SATA3 interface). A big YAY! for a dedicated LCS PUMP FAN header (most people these days have some sort of liquid cooling going on). All in all the ASUS ROG Maximus IX Formula is what it is, a terrific product. It is expensive though as historically you'll see prices launch in the 400 euro range. We love the EK waterblock on the VRM area, yet also realize that maybe 1% of end-users are actually going to use it. Perhaps for the next Maximus release that money is better spend on 10 GBit Ethernet something, I dunno, it's just an idea though. The board comes highly recommended, but obviously will serve just a small portion of the market due to its price level, but that doesn't make this any less of a quality product, to the contrary, it is a kick-ass product.
