Virtual Conference to Introduce Peace Activities Led by Global Citizens in the Pandemic Era
On May 25, 2021, HWPL held its 8th Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of World Peace online, with 3,000 people from 150 countries around the world in attendance. HWPL, an international peace NGO, stands for Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light. Since its founding in 2013, in association with its affiliated groups, International Peace Youth Group (IPYG) and International Women’s Peace Group, HWPL has been working towards implementing practical measures to achieve world peace and cessation of war.
With several cases of international partnership in peacebuilding projects endorsed by youth and women organizations categorized by each region – Africa, Europe, and Asia, this year’s event aimed to discuss a citizen-led peace movement and cooperation to promote coexistence and harmony in the global community, and to overcome global challenges that stem from hatred, conflicts, misunderstanding, and lack of communication in this current pandemic era.
The event commemorated the Declaration of World Peace, proclaimed on May 25thin 2013, which involves not only the cooperation of each state in establishing international laws for peace and the role of the media in sharing information about peace, but also the active peace movement of youth and women who seek to transform themselves from the greatest victims of war to the greatest actors for peace.
From HWPL’s peace initiative, for the past eight years millions of global citizens have participated in promoting locally adapted peace projects, including education, relief, and forums to offer public policies, in order to meet the needs of the community and create a favourable environment for peace.
In cooperation with IWPG, Chairwoman Pascale Isho Warda of Hammurabi Human Rights Organization (HHRO) in Iraq, who was appointed as Minister of Migration and Displacement by the UN from 2004 to 2005, introduced a legislation project of law that prevents violence against women and children.
Regarding the importance of peace activities through education, she said, “We need to learn the mechanism of guiding everyone to become tools of peace, which accumulates from daily life and sometimes throughout the simplest matters of life, starting with personal peace with oneself, within the family, and with others.”
Ven. Ashin Htavara, General Secretary of All Burmese Monks Representative Committee in Norway, who went through the Saffron Revolution in 2007, stated that 3 HWPL Peace Libraries were established in Payapon, Myanmar and that a fourth library is currently being prepared.
“There are too few libraries for children in Myanmar. I wanted to give hope to these little children. In the future, the library will conduct peace education, peace activities, and peace campaigns, and we will do everything that can help achieve peace,” he said.
The event also advocated global participation in peace activities, such as the peace tree planting campaign that began in Ukraine with 1,000 participants from 21 countries, and peace policy proposal dialogue between citizens and policy experts in Mali where the recent coup triggered social unrest.
“It is we in this day who have to do all the necessary things to make peace and prevent our globe from being destroyed. War does not end with words, but it comes to an end with our practical actions. I believe that this can be achieved since no one in our global village is not willing to see peace,” highlighted Chairman Lee of HWPL. Citizens in the Pandemic Era

The International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG, Chairwoman Hyun Sook Yoon) hosted the 2nd Annual Commemoration of the “International Women’s Peace Day” online under the theme of “3.8 Billion Women as One for the Cessation of War and Realization of Peace”.
International Women's Peace Day is celebrated on April 26, 2019 with the vision of “Cessation of War and Realization of Peace'' to protect precious lives from war in solidarity with 3.8 billion women around the world and to pass on peace to the future generations with the heart of a mother. It was officially proclaimed by the International Women's Peace Group, an NGO in consultative status with UN Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC).
On the afternoon of the 26th (KST), the 2nd commemoration event was held in South Korea during which there was an urge for support of the DPCW, which is the answer to achieving peace, to the heads of state of each country. There was also a time to urge interest and participation of women around the world to partake in peace activities so that the current crisis in Myanmar can be peacefully resolved.
The online commemorative event included a video of congratulatory remarks by Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL and by Judge Louis Otis, a Deputy Judge of the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). There was also the reading of a handwritten letter of peace by Reverend Dorothea Gopie, Chairperson of the Western Cape Provincial Chaplaincy, from the Republic of South Africa, followed by a video of activities promoting DPCW and a congratulatory performance. About 1,000 members in Korea and internationally attended the event.
In her commemorative address, Chairwoman Hyun Sook Yoon said, “Two years ago today, thousands of women from all over the world gathered together at the Independence Hall to celebrate the proclamation of the “International Women’s Peace Day” and we are now celebrating the 2nd anniversary. There are voices of sadness and concern from citizens around the world regarding the current bloodshed in Myanmar. During this, IWPG issued a statement calling for a peaceful resolution.”
Chairwman Yoon suggested that “the current international law is difficult to effectively sanction war, so in order to solve this problem, the 10 articles and 38 clauses of the DPCW is necessary to realize world peace.” And added, “It is a groundbreaking answer for peace that compensates the possible loopholes of the current international law.”
Chairman Man Hee Lee said during congratulatory video that, “we are one family of the world. Let's unite and fulfill a world of freedom, peace and love.” And concluded the congratulatory speech with, “HWPL wishes for the tremendous development and glory of IWPG.”
Judge Louis Otis from Canada said, “The mission of IWPG is to create a world where 3.8 billion women around the world will unite to realize gender equality, to seize war, and to achieve world peace.” She also added, “IWPG is carrying out activities, campaigns, and cooperative events around the world in order to develop collaboration and cooperation. IWPG is supporting and urging for the declaration of peace to become a legally binding instrument and is promoting for it to be established as an international law. IWPG’s ultimate goal is to provide peace education for women and to transform the culture of discrimination, violence, conflict into a culture of peace.”
IWPG, headquartered in Korea, has 100 branches throughout 130 countries around the world. The “International Women's Peace Day” commemorative event will be held every year to urge support of the 10 articles and 38 clauses of the “DPCW”. IWPG stated that the “Handwritten Letters of Peace” sent to heads of state and the activities to “Spread a Culture of Peace” will continue to expand.
