She isn't one to just announce that you're together either. People like Maine, Dorio, Kiwi know that, but others? Not so much.

When someone starts flirting with you, she let's it play out. She let's you handle the situation however you want, but she does give the person a nasty glare.

When things take a turn for the worst, and the person gets desperate, where they are pressuring you to give them your number, she's getting pretty pissed.

She usually just brain fries them and they fuck off, but when she gets mad enough she does make an open threat towards the person out of line.

After it's over she let's you be. But she does pay extra close attention to who gets close to you.

Falco

Falco doesn't really leave your side for these situations to happen often. But when they happen, they happen when you get a drink, go to the restroom, etc.

He always has an arm around you, just out of habit. So people usually notice that you two are together, if they don't know you.

When these incidents do happen, he doesn't immediately interfere, but when he sees you getting uncomfortable, he does come to your aid.

He explains to the person that you are with him, and that they need to back off because you're uncomfortable, but a bit more politely.

When that doesn't work, he doesn't threaten them openly, but he does make it clear that they need to leave you be. And that's usually it.

Afterwards he makes you as comfortable as he possibly can.

Takemura: I’m thinking perhaps he’s an anthropomorphic cat as a reference to the Bakaneko. Also he probably still has his cyberware.

Rogue: Anthropomorphic fox since she’s clever and cunning. She wasn’t surprised she went to Hell but still continued being a fixer.

Solomon Reed: Anthropomorphic wolf like V or jackal for that matter. Is most likely working for Lucifer now as his eyes when it comes to Hell or is now an assassin for hire.

Alex: Anthropomorphic chameleon and is an actress thanks to Vox but she hates working for him.

Kurt Hansen: Looks similar to Asmodeus or anthropomorphic dragon wearing his old outfit when he died and is a rival arms dealer to Carmilla.

Maine: Maybe looking like his old self and his cyberware but now has gray skin that has ash on it in reference to the explosion. He wasn’t surprised that he went to Hell after going cyber psycho and getting Dorio killed while endangering others.

Rebecca: Anthropomorphic raccoon ecause they tend to be sassy most of the time. She was beyond pissed that she went to Hell.

David: A cheetah since they run very fast in reference to his Sandevistan. Most likely built his pre chromed self or looks like his chromed self.

Oh! Just to narrow my questions down into one may I ask your thoughts on the Edgerunner's crew? :0c any stand out favourites?

I like pretty much all of them (Pilar less so, because he’s skeevy, but he also kind of fits for the setting so *shrug*). I think what I liked about the whole crew is that, even though there is definitely a strong attachment and solidarity there, you're aware, the whole time, that each member of the crew is ready to break off for the sake of their own survival in some degree. There's connection but there's also a persistent emotional guardedness. They won't call themselves a found family because it's simply too dangerous to assume that---but that's part of the tragedy of every time one of them gets killed off. A lot of this connection initially comes off in a sort of, "hey this city won't take mercy on you so don't expect it from me" but there's this... aggressive intimacy about it: Kiwi's willing to knock Rebecca out of commission if it means keeping her from killing herself by avenging Pilar. Dorio punching Maine out to keep him from trying to fight while clearly incapacitated from that one EMP. It's these weird gestures of loyalty and care from a place that has lost all language for that because so much is beyond anyone's control at any given time.

Dorio knows Maine is well past gone, but she keeps trying to pull him back, until it kills her. Rebecca literally saying "We're having a moment, here!" before getting killed by Adam Smasher. And then you have that moment where Lucy is able to get David to snap out of his own Cyberpsychosis long enough for him to save her and say goodbye. They only seem to register their own connections and how far they’re willing to go for each other when death seems imminent.

Also I like Falco because they basically just shoved Cole Cassidy into Cyberpunk--Matt Mercer included. And it’s interesting that the older, only minimally cyberized, low-key guy survives, and even then he loses his cybernetic arm. I think there’s probably a metaphor here about allowing capitalism and machinery to literally consume your body to survive.

Okay, so in the anime Cyberpunk Edgerunners, there's a huge muscle-woman character called Dorio. She's half as wide as she is tall. At one point, her boyfriend starts trying to cop a feel when they're on a mission, and she elbows him in the face. Which causes him to get a nose bleed. Then the blood turns her on so much she starts licking the blood off up and down his face. Then they make out. He's copping a feel again at this point.

Kink rating: that

Hm... it's in a strange middle ground of reactions where I find it difficult to connect to that behavior, I think?

What I mean by that is...

If an established romantic partner groped me I would not hit them to begin with, even if the situation was serious.

If someone who did not have any such arrangement groped me then I would hit them (I have actually done this before too) and any resulting blood would not move my feelings on the matter even if I do like blood.

So in terms of like, self-insert potential that aspect is low.

And then there's also the use of violence there. It's not really the type of usage that gets me going, I think. It's both mild and friendly, without stakes or domination in it.

So I think I'd have to go with 3/10. I don't hate it but I don't think I'd enjoy it as the focus of a fantasy or anything.

To simply put it together, he was shocked to find a person with such good intentions towards others.

There are not many people who had been good to him and didn't die.

Before he joined the crew you were already there. But after he joined he was surprised to find you, a welcoming and kind, with the past you had.

When he started working with you, you would keep an eye on him just in case he needed help.

And whenever he got injured, you would help him with treating the wound.

Whenever he got an implant you would nag him on him not taking care of himself properly, you'd congratulate him when he did better at a job than he did before, and many other nice things.

He started getting really attached to you. Calling you at night to talk to you about something. Talking to more when you went to party with the group, and other small things.

People started picking up on the things you did with each other and it became obvious that you liked each other.

After a while he decided that it would be time to tell you about his feelings, and he took you to a place where you usually went to have sentimental talks late at night.

Lucy

Lucy came around not long after you did, and she was surprised to meet someone like you.

She didn't trust you for a long time, believing that you had it out for her. But after a long time she realized you had good intentions.

You looked out for everyone in the crew, but you paid special attention to her. After some time you could tell she was afraid of something. She always acted like someone was looking for her, and would take her. Although you didn't bring it up, you made sure to try and make her feel safe.

Whenever she was finished netrunning for the day, you would check her, just to make sure everything was okay. You always made sure to remind her to take care of herself properly.

Although she didn't show it all that much she appreciated it a lot. She did little gestures in return, that not many noticed, other than a few closer friends.

She started being around you more. Even if it was just sitting beside you in silence, or buying you a drink when you were partying.

After some time you started noticing this and you decided to try your luck.

You called her to your apartment an you sat out on the balcony looking down at the city.

Pilar

If anything, Pilar was curious about you. He did not understand why you would be around people like them.

You were too nice of a person to just walk around with mercs. But then here you are. Dorio just bringing you here, out of nowhere.

But he couldn't lie, he did want to have sex with you. You were hot and different from the average people.

Especially with the way you nagged everyone with taking care of themselves and just being nice. When he wasn't hitting on you he was watching you talk with others.

He started clinging to you, trying harder to get in your pants, or asking bizarre questions.

When you got comfortable with the way he acted, he started getting touchy with you. Literally not caring where you were he was always breathing down your neck, touching you or trying to impress you.

After a while it came out that you had feelings for each other, probably Rebecca was complaining about him being all over you and not letting the two of you talk.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 1-6. I am unimpressed

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 1-6. I am unimpressed

Before we begin, some housecleaning.

I'll try and avoid too blunt spoilers, but it's unavoidable. Therefore, it'll be under a cut

I have never played any of the games, and came with minimal to no background knowledge into this. My biggest exposure into this world was from the AMV for the ending song. Oh and that Keanu Reeves was in it

I am aware there are 4 more episodes, and I plan on watching them. But this is an arc onto its own. Plus, given how what comes next is supposed to be even more tragic and heartbreaking, how much I care for things at this point matters.

And with that out of the way, onwards.

We'll start with the good, because credit where credit's due. I have little, if any, technical complaints or criticisms. I enjoy the art and style, I enjoy the animation. I like the voice acting in Japanese, and the moods set by both OP and ED songs and clips. This is a very well put together anime and kudos to Netflix for getting the right people on it.

I also appreciate how they managed to establish the broken, distorted world we're in within half an episode of less. Corporations big, strong, evil. Everyone else is jerking off openly in the streets because that's all they're good for. This dynamic is obvious even in school, where despite David being a straight-A student, he can't escape the social caste he was born into. Heck, his washing machine stops in the middle in his own home because they didn't have enough credits. All the while his mom's working herself to exhausting to try and keep them afloat and David in his fancy, expensive school.

I am fully onboard with you becoming a criminal, boyo. Let's go.

The story beats aren't anything new in the first chunk of the series, where the biggest conflict is "did Lucy lie to David with the moon date or was it real". This lasted just long enough so that when they cleared it up, them sleeping together would feel emotionally gratifying to the viewers.

Then the bloodbath started, and I realized —

I could not, for the life of me, care less.

Let's rewind to the beginning and remember Gloria Martinez — a Latina woman who worked overtime, ran smuggling operations for dangerous people like Maine, and ferried dangerous items like the Sandevistan implants. But what they actively talk about in the series is how she's David's mom — because they needed motivation for him — and that she knew Maine — because they needed Maine to not kill David, and also work with him. Maine mentions her a couple of times after that, but David doesn't, and we don't get any more details. Chopped up into nice itty bitty pieces and put in the fridge, and I am never to receive the spin-off about where she met David's dad, what happened to the dad, how she got her current job, how did someone like her even get David into the academy in the first place, and her life as a smuggler.

Sadge.

The next death involving a named character is Pilar. And what, at this point, do we know about Pilar? Well, he's a Techie, has long arms that let him do tricks, he's a pervert, and is there to make it obvious David is into Lucy by making him jealous every time Pilar gets close to her. Never mind Lucy is obviously disgusted by him and his unwanted advances, talk about a hostile work environment. Is it on-brand for the world we're in? Sure, I guess, but that means I'm somewhat relieved and happy when he gets his head blown off. Any negative emotion regarding the incident comes from me liking Rebecca, and how she reacted to it. Pros for more world building and group dynamics I guess, but if you're going to kill a named chara, usually I'm supposed to care, right...? Ah, but other than Rebecca no one else seemed to care, either, because David didn't so much as move until he realized Lucy was in danger.

Next on the list is Dorio, who was spoken to, or about, so little I wasn't sure of her pronouns until after she was dead. She was a physical power house, and she was fucking Maine. Cool. The same Maine who got her killed because he's a moron. #DorioDeservedBetter. We're not given any additional background about her at this point to the point it feels like another fridging to push Maine off the deep end. I will give kudos for her design. Be it a really beefed up cis woman or a trans woman (does it even really matter in a world where you can rebuild your body from scratch? ponderings), it's a design you don't see often in anime, so I appreciate it. Less so what happened to her.

Now we get to Maine. Maine, who on one hand was more fleshed out maybe even more than Lucy at this point. The big honcho looking out for his crew, knew Gloria, took David in partially for her sake, all that jazz. And suddenly he's starting to breakdown and has cypberpsychosis. He beats Kiwi up, he beats Dorio up, he has blackouts. We know he used to job in the desert and that's meaningful... why? We also know he could've reduced the risk of this happening because everyone told him to downgrade, but no, big hunk of a man that he is, he refused, no matter how much he was hurting his own crew and ruining missions. Can't say I cared much for him losing it enough to double down when Dorio died, but then David shows up and suddenly Maine is lucid enough to give a speech and see David off.

And with that, Maine fulfills his own death flag when he promised David could have his arms when Maine died. A man who brought about his own downfall, as well as that of his partner, because he refused to let go of his pride. Ultimately the makings of a fascinating tale... if this series stopped to actually bother with any of the characters. As it stands?

Rest in pieces, you piece of shit.

So, who does that leave us with?

David, who's a shonen anime protagonist who ended up in the wrong genre. Solid character so far, a bit of that 'Chosen One' trope with how he's managing the Sandevistan, but otherwise a rather accessible, likable character.

Rebecca, who's colorful inside and out. She's out spoken, energetic, friendly and at least seems to be honest. The reason I felt anything when Pilar died. Like the dynamic between her and David. Hope to see more of her.

Kiwi...? Is she still alive? Is she ok without most of her face? How does she even smoke like that? About all I know about her, really.

Lucy. The female lead. Rose to the arguable role of female protagonist once she started fucking David. We get tidbits of her past and issues, but I guess we're saving that for 7-10. Gotta get rid of the fodder in the party first, clear the stage for the main act.

And that's the end of the first arc.

Again, I have no qualms about any technical aspect of the show. Very solid, art, animation, audio, all of it. And the bigger plot, with Tanaka and Arakasa seems interesting enough.

But personally, I am first and foremost, a connoisseur of characters, and prefer my characters be given a semblance of humanity — preferably not reliant on who they're fucking — before they die. Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys and Monster come to mind, as well as Attack on Titan are good examples of moving the spotlight to characters right before they die, to make sure that if no emotional connection was made up to that point — here's a Hail Mary last attempt to get you to care before that character exists stage left.

Now, you can argue, and even have a good cause, that this is meta-storytelling. The world doesn't care so why should the story? To that I say, but then I don't care, so what's the point? Especially when Maine did get an introspection sequence, as fleeting and frustrating as I found it to be. So it's not that they couldn't — they didn't.

In Naoki Urasawa's works, which also often depict sub-optimal worlds, the deaths still stayed with me. They're beacons of humanity, that's what made them tragic.

Let's look at another example, Berserk. By the time the characters we know start dying off, we've known them for a good, long while and saw their characters, and relationships with Guts, develop and evolve. So when they died — it fucking hurt.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners had very little of that, and as though to add insult to injury, the casualties consist of:

Gloria Martinez, a woman of color

Maine, a man of color

Dorio, who at the very least spat in the face of gender norms, if she wasn't transexual. A rare sight either way.

I know that if you put representation in a messed up world like that, bad things will happen to these people. But other than Latino David, so far our other survivors are all white women, who generally adhere to the normative beauty standards we all know. One is the love interest on top of it, too.

To be perfectly fair, I think what I take out of this is that I'm not the target demographic for this series. I look for things they obviously didn't prioritize, and I prefer deeper logic and cohesiveness in narrative, both story wise and character wise. I found especially the latter lacking. Will I finish the show? Probably, because I do want to see where they take the plot, but I'm keeping my expectations low.

Well, seein’ as I can’t shake your hand, may as well call you a gonk. Heh, but for real, Becca, sorry I flatlined the way I did. I know, I know, wasn't my fault, but I wish you hadn’t seen it. And I know we both acted like a couple of gonk little kids while we were alive, but just for the record, you were always the best gonk little kid sister I could ask for, even if you did shoot my new hand after telling you to tip David (what the fuck, by the way?) Then again, guess that’s what brothers and sisters are for, right? Anyway, what I’m tryin’ to say is, I love ya, sis, and I’m glad you got away from Smasher. Don’t even think about flatlining anytime soon; Night City doesn’t give out second chances often. I know how sappy I sound, but I just wanted to give you a bit of closure, I guess. Not nearly enough time to say everything I should have when I was alive, but yeah. Love ya, sis. I’ll be watchin’ out for you. Maybe I’ll even haunt Smasher a bit. So, yeah. Be seein’ ya. Give the crew my regards.

Becca was silent. She didn't know if she was finally going crazy? Or whatever counted as a "God" on high was showing her some kind of twisted mercy... All that mattered what she was finally hearing Pilar talk to her again. She smiled every now and again, even giving the spirit a laugh or two here and there.

What could she say in return? I love you too? David killed the bastard that took you away? All those thoughts running through her head just made her chest feel tighter and tighter. Rebecca knew she was getting upset, but the urge to go for her gun wasn't there. She didn't know what this feeling was until it finally hit...there, alone in her apartment...Rebecca had finally caved and let the tears fall.

"Heh...you're the fucking gonk... There you go again. Always pushing everything onto me. You don't have to apologize to me, bro... You said it first, it wasn't your fault. But, I'll do it... David and Lucy are up on the moon right now. You could probably flip them off from where you are.~ Maine...and Dorio should be around there somewhere with you...as well as that bitch, Kiwi."

A pause. Just to wipe her eyes and collect her nerves before she spoke further. "Hey, Pilar? Love you too, dumbass..."

I didn't dislike the ending to Edgerunners. It was bittersweet and narratively satisfying, but I like the characters and I want them to have a happy ending. Some spoilers and fanfiction speculation after the cut.

The second half of the series can be explained away as an elaborate braindance sequence. Kurosaki initiates a second braindance sequence on David right as Lucy and Dorio arrive. Basically, treat everything that happens after the sequence starts as a dream, explained by what I assume is some serious hardware on Kurosaki's part necessary for the sort of direction and tuning his BD's require, and the time-dilation effect of David's Sandevistan. Their perhaps unintended interaction is what allows David to experience a year's worth of simulation in a relatively short amount of time.

With this you can create a point of divergence from the canon starting at the point where he's rescued from Kurosaki's braindance, and give the cyberpunks a chance for things to turn out, hopefully, for the better.

Shiel's Unsolicited Book Review #3:

The Sparrow by Mary Dorio Russel

Overall score: Both 6/10 and 12/10 simultaneously. It's complicated.

TLDR; Hard sci-fi fans stay away. Folks with complicated feels about religion, linguistics nerds, anthropology lovers, and everyone who admires snappy dialogue and lines that will stick with you for a long time, come on in.

This one also comes with some fairly big content warnings (dm me if you want more info) and a few bits are...well obviously written in the 1990s and in ways we wouldn't say are cool to talk about people and experiences today. I think there's a lot TO like about the book despite that, but there is room for criticism. The parts that fall short hurt me more because of high how the rest soared.

Pros: So we've got Jesuits in space. Don't think about it too hard. What we've really got is an incredibly poignant story about the complexity of humanity and the feeling that there has to be more. The necessity of asking questions and the fuzzy line that connects intent from result. And, at the end of the day, the connections that bind us.

You would think that these big themes would make a pretentious and dry book, but they are delivered from such human characters that you can't help but think yes, yes, I've asked myself too (just me?). It's not an adventure book, if you're someone who values plot over character development this isn't the book for you. But - I mean I'm not in fandom to not obsess over the beauty of people who know each other well just...being...with each other. I personally loved the pacing until...

Cons: ...well, until the end. This is where the 6/10 comes in. Now I was curious and looked up some reviews on this after I finished, and seems like opinions are fairly split on the conclusion. I found the pace to suddenly sprint when before it had walked, and the tone shifted from asking question to giving the reader solutions. Also, as a reader you knows things are going to go to shit from page #1, but, the way they do... it's not BAD (as a reader, it's sure bad to our squad) exactly, it's just a divergence from what I saw to be the most important (and my most loved) themes of the book. It was...unexpected...I'll give it that. It ends both worse and tidier than it should, and in (in my opinion) those are the wrong way round. That's probably confusing, but I'm trying not to spoil anything and I promise that if you read it it'll make sense.

Final verdict: This one will stay with me for a while. Even though I didn't think the ending didn't quite fit, it wasn't so egregious as to ruin everything prior. And boy, was everything prior something. This one was a punch in the gut, in a good way? It's definitely a specific taste, but it was my specific taste. And look, I write fanfic. I can just rewrite the last 100 pages in my mind.
