10 Camera Bag Essentials

We’ve all been there right? You’re in the local camera shop, sizing up a new camera bag, only to bring it home to realise all the bits and pieces you have don’t fit in there all together! If you’re anything like me, then by now you probably have a camera bag for all occasions!

Here’s a run-down of my 10 Camera Bag Essentials - things that are always in my bag, almost all the time (whatever bag i happen to be using!), whatever the mission!

1. FOTGA Professional Rocket Air Blower

A little cheaper than it’s famous competitor; i’ve also found the FOTGA to be a little more hard wearing! It’s not just the perfect accessory for getting dust off of your lenses, filters and sensors. It’s also great for people writing blogposts whilst eating toast!

2. Hama Micro II Lens Pen

Hama are pretty much the go-to choice for lens cleaning pens. I’ve had many of them down the years and i think every one of them was a Hama. Hardwearing, long lasting, and does the job. The cleaning tip is also small enough to get in the viewfinder of your camera, or clean the lens of your smartphone. Good job Hama!

3. JOBY GorillaPod

These little monkeys, sorry, Gorillas are awesome! They come in a range of size and load bearing capacities (up to 5kg), and are perfect for Vloggers as well as conventional snappers! Particularly useful for shooting time-lapses from motorway flyovers!

4. K&F Concept 77mm Variable ND Filter

Winter is coming, and snowy landscapes with low sun will soon be before our lenses! In fact, a good ND filter is perfect any time of the year when shooting in sunny conditions, especially if you’re shooting video too! The best thing about the K&F is that it’s a variable filter, which means it can be adjusted to your light requirements. A must have piece of kit for anyone shooting outdoors!

5. Anker Power Bank

If you’ve got teenagers at home, roaming the streets with their smartphones, then you know all about power banks already! The funny thing is thought, they really are an essential piece of kit - especially if you’re out shooting for a day or more. I’ve used high-capacity power banks for some time now, and in many cases when i’m away from home for just a few days - i don’t even take a phone charger with me. These things will charge anything with a powered usb connection - phones, gopros, tablets etc etc

6. Western Digital Portable Hard Drive

Backing up data on the go is becoming an essential part of any photographers day. And a portable hard drive really is a does fall in the category of camera bag essentials! Available in a variety of capacities, it’s always useful to have one with you on the road. Some models are also available with a memory card input so you can back up images for editing later, without having to worry about data loss. Now….while we’re on the subject of backing up - you’ll need some of these first…

7. Sandisk Extreme PRO Memory Card

Yeah, well, this one is a bit obvious isn’t it! But, it never hurts to have a bunch of cards in your bag (i keep one in my wallet too - just in case i forget to pack some - believe me, i’ve done it!)! These things do go kaputt, so spares are essential! SanDisk cards are however super-reliable, fairly priced, and very fast!

8. Apple Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader

If you happen to be a true on-the-fly editor, then this is for you!! No more uploading to clouds or whatever so that you can edit on your iPad in the car home - just pop this in to any iOS device and the files on the card will automatically appear for import in the iOS photos app. What you do after that is up to you!

9. Manfrotto Universal Smartphone Clamp

This handy smartphone holder is the perfect companion for your Gorilla Pod or travel tripod. This phone clamp is grippy and sturdy, and can be threaded on to almost any small tripod. Again, really useful when you need to keep your phone completely steady when shooting at night or time-lapse.

10. DJI Mavic Mini

Yeah, i know what you’re thinking! A drone isn’t really a camera bag essential, is it? But why not? The latest drone from DJI has a new sensor on board, can shoot 2.7k video, and is under the weight limit for most countries requirement for registration! You just need to fly the thing responsibly!

A great piece of kit for landscape shooters that just can’t get into the right position for the shot they want! Don’t think that’s because it’s a drone you have to go on some record breaking flight and photograph that castle you’re in front of from 10,000ft! Most things look sooo good with just a slight change of perspective - sometimes just a few meters!

DJI Osmo Mobile 3 Tested: A Smartphone Gimbal You Can Travel With

When I reviewed DJI’s Osmo Mobile 2 smartphone gimbal, I was quite impressed with its stabilization capability and feature set. It made it possible to record smooth video in tricky situations, as well as do some cool time-lapse photographs. Its big drawback was its size and shape. The combination of the two meant that it needed to be carried in a large case — at which point it’d be easier to simply carry a small camera with optical stabilization.

DJI has addressed those concerns with its new folding model of the Osmo, the DJI Osmo Mobile 3 ($149.99). Sporting a feature set even larger than that of its predecessor, it folds into a compact size that allows you to either carry it in its small case or conveniently fit it into the place taken by a lens or point-and-shoot in your photo bag. The Osmo Mobile 3 only weighs about 14 ounces, and it can hold just about any smartphone that is between 2.5 and 3.5 inches wide. I used it successfully with a Google Pixel 3 and a Huawei Mate 20 Pro. For its small size, the Mobile 3 has a relatively large 2,450Wh battery that is good for up to 15 hours of operation — assuming you’ve done a good job balancing your phone in the clamp.

Using a DJI Osmo Mobile 3

DJI has made the controls on the Osmo Mobile 3 about as simple as possible. The Power button doubles as a function button, and you get a dedicated shutter/record button, as well as a Telephoto/Wide rocker that operates if you have your phone paired with the Osmo Mobile 3 over Bluetooth. A multi-function trigger has also been added for additional flexibility. The new spring-loaded phone mounting system is also more forgiving than the previous version. I didn’t have any trouble finding a way to mount either phone that completely avoided the problem of having the clamp accidentally affect any of the controls.

You can also control the gimbal’s operation using DJI’s Go app on your phone. That works well once you have it set up, but since you’re supposed to mount your phone to the gimbal before turning it on, you do need to make sure you have enough hands available to use the app while you are also holding the gimbal. Speaking of phones, there is even a USB port you can use to charge your phone if needed.

Once you’re shooting, the Osmo Mobile 3 has the usual modes of operation, where you can have it attempt to stay locked in one place or track with your hand movements. You can set the speed of the automatic zoom, letting you create something similar to the “Dolly Zoom” often used in movies. After a little practice, I found that I could execute fairly smooth pans and zooms, even with moving subjects or from a moving vehicle. For example, in this video recorded from a boat drifting in the current and vibrating from the engine, I was able to capture stable footage of people jumping off an old submarine tunnel in Montenegro:

Impressive Stabilization in a Small Package

In my testing, the Osmo Mobile 3 performed even better than the Osmo Mobile 2, despite being quite a bit smaller and lighter. That was true even with the fairly large phone I was using (a Huawei Mate 20 Pro). In this video clip taken from a boat motoring across Skadar Lake in Montenegro you can see that it keeps the landscape and horizon quite stable:

Packed Full of Features

As with the Osmo Mobile 2 and the Pocket mini-camera, the Osmo Mobile 3 is packed full of features. Time Lapse is one of my favorites. To assist with those, DJI offers an optional small tripod (a larger, but more versatile option that the tiny base it sells for the Osmo Mobile 2). Alternatively, you can attach your own plate or tripod via the 1/4-inch socket on the bottom of the grip. Its ActiveTrack object tracking isn’t going to help anyone covering serious sports, but it’s useful for interviews, selfie video blogging, or walking around a subject while keeping it in the frame. For tracking action you can switch the Mobile 3 into Sport mode, which makes it respond and move more quickly, but without active tracking.

As with other DJI products, the Osmo Mobile 3 supports some gestures. So you could, for example, set the gimbal up on a tripod (it has a 1/4-inch socket, and the kit version comes with a small tripod that fits it), and then start it recording or taking photos with a gesture.

DJI’s post-processing software also continues to improve and is a good option for someone not already using a solution like Adobe’s Premiere Rush for mobile video editing. If you’re in a hurry, or simply don’t want to bother doing any processing yourself, DJI offers Story Mode, which automatically turns your clip into a ready-to-share multimedia creation. You can further customize your Story with transitions, music, and effects filters before sharing.

Is the DJI Osmo Mobile 3 Right For You?

At $120, the Osmo Mobile 3 is an affordable way to upgrade the quality of your smartphone videos. If you’re a video blogger who does a lot of selfie videos, it’s also a lot better solution than a traditional selfie stick. Speaking of which, since it has a tripod mount on the bottom, you could, in theory, turn it into a longer selfie stick by adding an extension. However, you wouldn’t be able to run the controls in that configuration.

My biggest problem with the Mobile 3 is that I now feel bad I purchased the Mobile 2. I found that after I did, its large size kept me from taking it with me on most of my trips. That isn’t an issue with the Mobile 3. If you’re going to spring for one and can afford an additional $20 for the kit, you’ll get a well-implemented case and a small tripod. I used the case for times when the gimbal went in my checked luggage, but for day-to-day use, I found it worked just fine to stick it in a padded section of my camera bag.

Hands on with DJI’s X7 Gimbal and the Inspire 2

Earlier this year I spent a month in and around Utah filming drone coverage on a show for Discovery. On that project I had access to both the Inspire 1 and  the Phantom 4 Pro. Time and again I found myself flying the Phantom 4 Pro simply because I found it much easier to maneuver (both in terms of camera and mid-flight). The Inspire 1 just didn’t give me the kind of fine motor control I was looking for and the obstacle avoidance on the Phantom Pro made for safer flying.

What a difference a few months makes.  The Inspire 2 feels like the Phantom 4 Pro in the air, accompanied by a superior image in the form of the X5 camera gimbal and now the X7.

The X7/Inspire 2 combo occupies an interesting place in the drone market. Does it provide the same image as flying an Alexa Mini or RED Weapon? Well obviously not, but do all of your projects need the image from an Alexa Mini or RED Weapon? Probably not. The image out of the X7 is gorgeous, and I would argue that it could cut into your projects shot on large cinema cameras. 

The big sell for me on this  is that it takes five minutes from box open to takeoff.  Unbuckle the drone and lens case  and in minutes grabbing shots with your favorite two or single person team. I still wouldn’t call the Inspire 2/X7 combo a cheap option necessarily, but in terms of bang for your buck, you can’t do much better than this.

Once you’re jonesing to get this tool in your prouduction’s  arsenal, you’ll need to look at how many days you’ll want to be flying to see if you can justify a purchase or need to stick to renting…so let’s talk about cost

The DJI Zenmuse X7 Camera and 3-Axis Gimbal Costs $2,699.00 and as of the time this article is being written, there are four available lenses for the X7.  Each F2.8 DL mount carbon fiber lens costs about $1,300 and is available from your favorite retailer in 16mm, 24mm, 35mm and 50mm variants. If you purchase all the lenses you’ll land somewhere a little above $4000, but for the budget conscious purchasing the 16mm and 50mm provides you with a good start and you can build toward the whole kit over a few projects. Now, if you’ve been doing the math, a DJI Inspire 2 will set you back $3,000 without the camera or travel case and when you start adding on camera, lenses, media, pro res/cinemaDNG licensing and extra batteries things start to get well north of $10,000 for a really useful kit.

Once you factor in liability insurance you will definitely need to make sure you’re shooting enough drone footage to make this kit financially worthwhile. For owner/op/sometime drone pilots, you may find yourself perfectly happy with a Phantom 4 Pro package, now available in obsidian HERE.

If money is no object, you will also want to fork over the extra $500 for pro res or $1,300 for the CinemaDNG/Pro Res license combo. If you don’t, you’ll be limited to H.264 and H.265 — which begs the question why you didn’t purchase the DJI Phantom 4 Pro in the first place as it allows  recording in both of those codecs. For this review, I was working on a project that was finishing in Premiere to 1920×1080 with limited post time, so I found ProRes 422HQ 16:9 3840×2160 to be the right format for me. However, with license purchases you’ll open up a whole host of tip top options that record to the drone’s onboard SSD:

Note: Once the SD card fills up the SSD no longer records. When recording in the Inspire 2’s superior codecs (RAW CinemaDNG, 422HQ and ProRes 4444XQ), you’ll find yourself only pulling out the SSD and forgetting to re-format the SD card. This is not a surprise you want to have mid-flight with a client looking over your shoulder. Don’t forget to format the SD Card between each flight — even when only using the footage captured to SSD. You can record H264 ,H265 and stills to the SD card only. It’s worth noting that the SSD stick is much easier to take out once the batteries are removed.

Now, let’s get to the operation.

As aforementioned, setup is lightening fast. Where I would have difficulty locking the camera alignment with the inspire 1, the X7 easily locks into place on the Inspire 2 with little to no fiddling. Batteries slide quickly into place and the SSD stick slides into its slot easily. One button ejects the batteries and another button turns the Inspire 2 on and off. Pairing to a new controller is easy and I found the pilot/cam op controller relationship to be intuitive, though I did have to turn the app on and off once or twice before my older iPad mini detected the Inspire. In short, if you’ve spent any time with an Inspire 1 you’ll find setup is easy and if you are a Phantom user looking to make an upgrade, you’ll be up to speed with a five minute youtube video.

After flying with the Inspire 2/X7 over a dozen times I found the Inspire 2 a dream to fly and the X7 image to be significantly better when compared to the Inspire 1/X5 combo. Where I found the highlights to be blown out on an X5 camera, I was pleasantly surprised to see different shades of white and gray in the sky on an overcast day on the X7. In low light situations the level of noise was acceptable into 1600 ISO for my taste, but it’s worth noting that when shooting RAW you are limited to 1600 ISO with the X7.

Shoot in CinemaDNG and you’ll unlock the real grading potential of the X7, but handling the files can be a little daunting at first glance. Fear not. Once you plug your Inspire SSD into your computer using the DJI reader you’ll see your files displayed as individual stills (see left pic).

To view these stills as video you’ll need to pull them into Premiere using the Media Browser window. You can then drag a clip onto your timeline and enjoy working with RAW 6016×3200 X7 video at up to 30fps. Or, you could work with ProRes proxies and deal with the RAW files at the latter color stages of your edit process (recommended).

All the DL lenses have a uniform 46mm front diameter making filter purchasing (lots of 46mm threaded filters available) and threading easy. ND’s are essentially required if you’d like to shoot in and around F4-F8 during the day, which tends to also be the sharpest F-stop range for your lens. All four lenses are light, each weighing about 180 grams and click into place quickly on the X7.

Just as with the Inspire 1, focus has always been a little tricky for me to judge on mobile devices, so I often found myself tapping the screen in auto focus mode just to give myself ample opportunity to retrieve a sharp image. For this field review I used the Apple iPhone 7+ for one controller and an iPad Mini 3 for the other.

The inspire 2 hardened foam case that comes with the purchase of the UAV does a good job keeping the inspire 2 secure, but there isn’t room for the X7 or any of the lenses, so keep that in mind when purchasing. A pelican 1400 with pluck foam will hold all four DL lenses and the X7.

Obstacle avoidance with the Inspire 2 is a brand-new feature not included in the first inspire and I’ve come to rely on GPS mode + obstacle avoidance for peace of mind. Nothing replaces good ole fashioned common sense and hawkeye observaction when it comes to flying, but it is helpful having the Inspire remind me I’m too close to a tree. Many commercial drone pilots fly with obstacle avoidance off to get closer to foreground for dynamic shots, but I find with 90% of my shots that obstacle avoidance makes sense.

At this point it’s hard to find true competitors to DJI. They’ve led the field for a while now with their Phantom series, and now the Inspire continues to deliver professional results on realistic  production budgets. The Inspire 2/X7 combo doesn’t require an electrical engineering degree to master, and if you’ve spent any time playing video games you’ll be right at home with the controller in your hands. It’s never been easier to pull up your production vehicle and grab RAW aerials in minutes, so get that FAA commercial certification and start flying.

I had 72 hours before departing back to Pittsburgh from a shoot in Ohio. With no concept or plan, Chris Myhren and I spontaneously decided to embark on the journey of creating a mini-doc. Our only problem besides my limited time was the lack of a mini-doc subject. At 9pm Sunday evening through a mutual friend and 3-way phone call we met Tommy Zula. Our first conversation with Tommy was a whirlwind. He was driving back to Ohio from a BMX competition in New York and his ETA was 3am. So after chatting with him and figuring out he had an awesome story worth telling, we asked him if he could shoot at 6am… and I’m pretty sure he responded “dood totally!” Our call ended at 10pm and that’s when pre-production started. Chris and I both wanted to create a BMX film that was not your stereotypical “trick” video that have become ubiquitous online. The bike was not only a physical transportation device but also a mental and emotional one, which Tommy used to escape the rough part of town and his difficult home life. Tommy’s personality and passion, not his latest BMX tricks, was our focus for the film. Prepping late into the night/morning, we figured out a structure for the film but knew it was all dependent upon Tommy’s interview. We wanted to film at sunrise/sunset with Tommy both days, which meant we were shooting non-stop (35 hours in 2 days). To best utilize our only light source (the sun), we shot all of our exteriors either early in the morning or late in the afternoon around sunset. I wish I could tell all the stories and moments that happened along the way filming for those 2 days in Ohio but unfortunately there is a character limit the video descriptions. Once we were done shooting and had the edit locked we tackled sound design and then grading the film. As crazy as it may sound or not sound, the opening sound effects of the bike were straight out of camera. The internal microphone on the Weapon did a great job capturing the sounds of the bike as I followed Tommy throughout the streets. However, the rest of our bike sound effects were reordered by our friend Joe with a Sennheiser MKH416 through a Zoom H4N sporadically throughout the second day. In post it was a matter of layering sound effects and adding some ambience/wooshes/impacts when necessary. The grade was done within Premiere 2017 using Lumetri. Honestly, I was not the biggest fan of how Lumetri handled the RED footage, but I very well may not have been doing something correctly. For some odd reason when I adjusted the RGB curve or other settings it would drastically affect the look of the footage. We never did find a solution other than doing minuscule adjustments at a time. We graded the film using a Lutify.me LUT called Magnetite as a starting point for the look we wanted to achieve. The trick with using most LUTs is to dial them way back until they are only around 20-40% opacity/strength. For the most part those LUTs in particular are very strong and unless that is the specific look you are going for it’s almost always necessary to dial them back. From there we just adjusted the levels in Lumetri to our taste. The entire film (besides the drone shots) was shot on my RED Weapon at 6K in a variety of frame rates at a 2:41 aspect ratio. For the handheld footage we shot normal speed but for most of the MoVi shots we filmed at 72 or 100 frames per second. There were some instances when we shot 3K/4K to achieve even higher frame rates. I’m a huge fan how 72 frames per second looks with a 180 degree shutter. Balancing the MoVi M15 with the Weapon was very easy using my Leica R lenses and thin Switronix 75w batts. The Leica R lenses gave us a very creamy yet distinct look with each lens’ unique bookeh and flaring. To keep a 180 degree shutter we used a Tiffen Vari-ND filter to maintain exposure. Our friend Brian used an Inspire 1 and DJI Phantom 3 for the drone shots. Overall, I cannot thank everyone else who had a role in the making of this mini-doc. We honestly could not have done it without the incredibly generous time and input everyone gave us in the process. What's in our Tech Bag: Full RTW Tech Packing Checklist

When you’re planning long term travel, it means that inevitably, you’re going to be bringing a gadget or two alone with you.  At bare minimum, it’s probably going to be your cell phone. However, depending what your goals are while abroad, you might plan on a lot more.

We knew we wanted to film our entire trip, so we basically took a studio with us.  Think “more tech, less t shirts”.    

So without further ado, this is all the tech we brought along on our year long trip along along with why. (And yes, this is way too many electronics.  It’s nonsense, and a lot of things were sent home along the way.)

Winner of the Cheap, Simple, and Best Gadget if You're Going to Buy Anything on This Page award... 

Kikkerland Universal Electric Travel Adapter- We lucked out and chose the best electric socket adapters. Sounds like a really simple thing to shop for but the crazy amount of options makes it super convoluted and overly complicated.  Here is what's great about these travel adapters-modern electronics have chargers that help regulate the power they are getting.  In the past, you needed an actual voltage converter so you didn't ruin your gadgets.  Now, most (if not at all) charging cords have that feature built into them.  That meant we were able to charge our drone, laptops, iPhones, and cameras everywhere from New Zealand to Vietnam to Cyprus using only these VERY simple adapters. Buy It Here.

GoPro & GoPro Accessories

GoPro Hero4 Black- Bought on the road because our GoPro Hero3 started acting wonky.  We chose the Hero 4 Black because the recording specs (resolution and frame rate) are higher than that of the Silver.  The Silver however has a LCD screen so you can more easily see what you're recording.  It really comes down to preference.  As this was written in 2017, the Hero 5 is now available, but we're still very happy with the performance and improved battery life of the Hero4. GoPro Hero3- We've had this camera since it was released.  While it still occasionally acts up in the heat, we can't complain about the longevity of the camera.  We used it daily and beat the piss out of it for a couple years and now its our “stunt” camera. That means that the if we need to do any shot where there is a decent chance of losing the camera forever or damaging it, we'll pull out the good old Hero3. Buy It Here

GoPro Chesty- I fought bringing this the whole time.  It’s bulky.  You look stupid wearing it.  It's hot.  However, if you can suck it up, it makes for great POV shots on a motorcycle/scooter as well as when you’re hiking.  Downside?  You have to be that guy wearing a chesty. Buy It Here.

Feiyu Tech G4-QD 3-Axis Gimbal - One piece of tech we wish we had from the beginning of the trip.   Read more about it here. Watch our video review here. If you don't buy this specific gimbal, do yourself a huge favor, and at least get a gimbal.  A complete gamechanger and surefire way to better footage. Buy It Here.

Movo External Microphone for GoPro- Exactly what it sounds like- a small microphone that attaches to GoPro via mini USB.  The sound is EONS better than the standard internal mic on the GoPro.  We also picked up some fuzzy windscreens to eliminate wind noise. Buy It Here. 

GoPro 3 Way Mount- A bit of a dilemma here... the GoPro branded three way mount is WAY too expensive at $60.  Plus, if you lost a screw for it, they give you a hell of a time to just order a new one.  (We managed to lose two screws).  On the plus side, the mount is built tough and stood up to plenty of abuse.  On the plus PLUS side, there is a great knockoff version for less than $20. Buy the way overpriced version here. Buy the cheap version by searching for "generic gopro 3 way mount" on eBay.

GoPro Dive Housing Case- An absolute must have.  The waterproof case made it an easy decision to bring the Hero3 or Hero4 with us everywhere.  A waterproof case is necessary, especially if your travels take you to South East Asia where if its not raining, you're likely playing in water in the jungle, at the beach or in a pool. Buy It Here.

GoPro Orange Floaty- If you’re using a GoPro in its waterproof case, you might as well have the orange floaty attached so that when you inevitably drop it, its not gone forever.  For example, if you were on a sailboat island hopping trip in Thailand and your name was Allison, you could very well mistakenly drop a GoPro without a floaty in 25 feet of water and just hope your husband is a skilled enough free diver to retrieve it. Drone & Drone Accessories

Drone Carrying Bag- I've written about this bag at length. It's ugly as hell.  I hate looking at it.  It also did a tremendously great job of protecting our drone during its 10 months on the road.  It wasn't amazing comfortable to hike all day in, but then again, what drone bag is. Phantom 3 Professional- Back in my day, when you wanted to travel the world with a drone, you took this huge ass one with you because ya didn't really have a choice.  These days there are more choices than ever. However, at the time of writing, GoPro has recalled all their Karma drones because they kept falling out of the sky and Kickstarter projects like Lilly have been canceled.  If I had $1k burning a hole in my pocket I'd probably go pick up a DJI Mavic.   However, I still love our Phantom 3 Pro and they can be picked up for less than half of what I originally paid. PolarPro DJI Phantom 3 Lens Filter- When it comes to shooting pretty video, we're about as knowledgeable as a couple monkeys smashing rocks together. Really.  If you've ever seen anything pretty on our site or videos, its completely by mistake.  Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then. We quickly discovered that filming with the drone without a lens filter on it led to consistently over exposed footage.  We also learned that if we shot in AUTO mode that our footage would end up changing color as we moved about.  The only solution was to buy a set of filters for new light conditions and then shoot in MANUAL mode.  If you're buying a drone, buy some filters.  There is no real way around it.  We like the screw on filters as we lost the slip on ones before during a flight.  Buy It Here.

Tools for Phantom 3- I brought along assorted electronics screwdrivers that fit my Phantom.  You might want to do a bit of research to find out what size and shape of driver head you will need if you need to do repairs in the field. 

iPad Mini 2: We had a friend deliver this to us while abroad because it was just too difficult to fly the drone using the tiny screen on our phones.  iPhone 5 doesn’t work with the Phantom 3, and even the iPhone 6 was incredibly difficult to use.  An upgrade to an iPad Mini 2 let me more easily see any sort of obstacles that could cause mid air disasters, including wires and angry seagulls. I’d say it paid for itself ten times over by helping me avoid what would have been some amazing crashes. Buy it Here. Other Cameras & Camera Equipment

Samsung NX2000 Mirrorless Camera- We wanted a still camera that was better than what our phones were packing.  This was more compact than a DSLR, was easy enough for us camera newbies to operate well, and shot decent video for us.  Would recommend an alternative option though, as despite having an accessory shoe, Samsung no longer sells a compatible external mic for this camera. Canon Vixia HF G10 Camcorder- While obviously higher quality footage than shooting video on an iphone we were a bit more concerned with how it would stand up to a daily beating of hiking, surprise rain storms, and driving down rough roads.  That, mixed with zero space left in the day bag We mailed this home 2 months into the trip and now just use it for shooting videos inside. Buy It Here.

Telephoto Lens- (compatible with Samsung NX2000) We brought this with us, only to quickly determine that we didn’t need it.  This lens takes beautiful pictures, but we found ourselves constantly conflicted on whether it was worth throwing in our day bag..  We needed the shorter lens to film most of the time, and between the Samsung still camera, a GoPro, a drone, and an external battery pack, the telephoto lens just seldom seemed like it was worth carrying along. We could see how anyone who was really into still photography wouldn’t leave home without it though. Don't buy one.

Tripod: A $20 impulse purchase at an electronic store in Vietnam was carried with us for the rest of the trip. Mostly used so that we could shoot product review videos during our motorbike trip.  The other thing that it ended up being used for was time lapse photos with the Time Lapse accessory attached (below). 

Timelapse/Panoramic Camera Mount- Basically a glorified egg timer that you mount your camera, GoPro, or iPhone on.  You can then shoot a timelapse while you get a smooth rotation of the camera.  Allison found hers on Amazon for less than $20.  Initially skeptical on bringing such a single purchase gadget, I think the shots that we ended up getting with it made it well worth it. Buy It Here.

iPhone 6- Allison's phone (but really an additional camera). High quality video and the ability to do slow-mo.  Also, used to fly the drone for the first half of the trip.  Amazingly, it never had a battery above 50% the entire trip but that might have been (definitely was) user-error.  Due to an American Telephone contract this phone could not be unlocked, leaving us with only Tim's phone (below) to add a SIM card to. You already own one of these.

Iphone external Mic- Used with a deadcat so that we could record audio that didn’t sound like steaming garbage.  You can only film so much before you get fed up with wind noise over your interesting banter. Buy It Here.

Other Tech Items 

Iphone 5- Tims iPhone.  Old enough to be out of contract so it was unlocked.  That meant we could pick up cheap SIM cards overseas.  You don’t get any magic points for making travel hard on yourself, and the ability to at least use the internet let alone make a call while you’re out doing daily activities is even more valuable when abroad than at home.  You already own one of these.

Otterbox for Iphone 5- Tim loves to drop his phone.  Loves it!  But at least he can admit it.  Though an otterbox can be clunky, it offers great fall protection and makes it at least a little water resistant for that unplanned rainstorm you’ll get caught in. Buy It Here.

Lenovo Yoga Pro- Bought on ebay used.  These things were easily one of the best choices we made for our trip.   Inexpensive enough that it wouldn’t be devastating if one was lost or destroyed.  Really lightweight, compact, and powerful enough to edit video.  Also, as someone who thought touch screen laptops were stupid...the touch screens turned out awesome. This is what we edit all of our video on.  They are also awesome on the airplane/bus/train/ferry because they rotate around for different tablet-style screen use.  Check out our full laptop article if you're looking for more info.

Earbuds- You can listen to stuff, or use them to not pretend you’re somewhere else.  Don’t bring your $100 Beats earbuds.  Bring cheap ones-you can pick up a new pair almost anywhere. You already own these.

Headphone-splitter- A must if you’re traveling with someone else.  Also a great way to make friends on planes and trains. In our specific case, Allison hates to charge her phone and computer, so she was always VERY interested in whatever movie I might be watching during our longer flights. Buy It Here.

Small USB Battery Pack- You know you’re gonna need some power because someone always forgets to charge the cameras. Buy It Here.

Big-ass USB Battery Pack- You’ll probably need even more power because someone always forgets to charge the cameras. Or their phone. Or the GoPro. Just don't forget to charge THIS. Buy It Here.

Shitty day bag- Lumping this in here with electronics- Don’t carry your things around in brand new, electronic manufacturer branded bags. You aren't doing yourself favors by letting everyone know you have a Canon DSLR in a Canon speciality backpack. Bring a cheap day bag or buy a crap looking knockoff while abroad.  Try your best to not advertise how much money is sitting in your backpack.  Also, two straps, so that any would be thiefs can’t simply yank it off a shoulder.  Go look in a dumpster.

Bestek Power Inverter- Yes.  Tim lugged this stupid thing around the world for almost a year, just so we could have it to use for a two week road trip in Europe and then 6 weeks in New Zealand.  He stands by his decision.  We were able to charge a laptop, a drone battery, and two USB devices at the same time.  This thing was built to withstand abuse and we’re still using it in our car back home to run crock pots at football tailgates. Buy It Here.

Travel curling iron- Seemed like a great idea, but never ended up using it. Allison mailed it home after 5 months and never touched it once. Don't Buy One.  Seriously.
