Playing DGS has been an absolutely magical experience but also it's killing me because I can see all the ways that it feels like a thematic continuation of AA4
Jury System? AA4 set that up. Pursuing witnesses based on their reactions to testimony? That feels like the natural extension of perceive. Your clients and witnesses almost all being guilty of something or other even if it's not murder? Presenting "scientific evidence" that isn't taken seriously because of the lack of credentials of the girl who gave them to you? Running theme of corruption and the boundaries of the law? Revenge taken beyond the boundaries of the law and doggedly pursuing the truth despite the moral and legal repercussions of doing so? Seen that before
Even the character arcs for Ryu and Susato feel like they could have been repurposed from Apollo and Trucy. Not having faith in the law or others because they're betrayed you so many times, so you need to learn to trust in yourself? I stg that just feels like a continuation of the ideas presented for Apollo in AA4. Susato tampering with the crime scene because she lost faith seeing firsthand how the law failed, struggling with hidden feelings of inadequacy?? That could be a really nice way to expand on the themes presented in the whole forged ace debacle
I feel like I'm losing my mind but the tinfoil hat is on and I can see the ghost of AA4 in the floorboards of DGS

Courtney: To defy Chairman Debeste, is to defy the law. It would be a grave act of disloyalty. In other words, a hearing won't be needed. Are you prepared to lose your Prosecutor's Badge?
Gumshoe: Th-That's...! Mr. Edgeworth's badge...! You can't do that!
Franziska: ...Using a prosecutor's badge as a shield. What has the P.I.C. come to...?
Edgeworth: Kay...! You haven't done anything wrong!
Kay: Mr. Edgeworth... It was only for a short time, but... Thank you for everything... I'm sorry... I turned out to be a criminal...
Courtney: We will make sure to impart your confession to the Goddess of Law.
Edgeworth: .....Nngh! (What... should I do!? When I was young, I wanted to become a defense attorney like my father... Someone who can fight to save those in need...! And right now... this badge is holding me back. A mere badge, for the life of a dear friend... I don't even have to consider it...!)
Kay: ...Alright. Farewell... Mr. Edgeworth.
Edgeworth: Hold it right there! Judge Courtney!
Courtney: ...What is it now, Prosecutor Edgeworth? ! This is... your prosecutor's badge! Prosecutor Edgeworth! What is the meaning of this!?
Edgeworth: ...Consider this my resignation. I am... no longer a prosecutor!
Kay: M... Mr. Edgeworth...?
Franziska: Wh-What are you doing!? Explain yourself! Miles Edgeworth! You... you can't be serious!?
Gumshoe: Mr. Edgeworth! You... you're joking, right? If you aren't a prosecutor, then I...!
Edgeworth: My only mission is to bring the truth to light. If it's the prosecutor's path to turn a blind eye to the truth... ...then that title is worth nothing to me! I... will walk in the path that I believe in. ...I will not be stopped here!
Compare this to:
Ryunosuke: We know that Morse code comprises of two distinct tones. The defence believes that the second disk contains the second tone needed to complete the message! And now we have a chance...to confirm that theory!
Gregson: For cryin' out loud, sunshine! We're talkin' about state secrets here! If you go lettin' the whole courtroom hear confidential information like that, it's...it's treason!
Ryunosuke: Then do you admit the charge? That in order to protect those state secrets, you engaged in unlawful dealings with the witness?
Gregson: You're... You're mad... If you let that secret information out into the public domain... ...you'll...you'll be makin' an enemy of the entire British government, you idiot!
Ryunosuke: Objection! Let's not forget, Inspector, that you - a Scotland Yard officer - leaked confidential case details to a witness! That you continue to lie to the court! And all because, by fair means or foul, you're determined to do your duty. Well...by fair means or foul, I'm prepared to do mine!
Gregson: Don't you dare...
Ryunosuke: I will stop at nothing to protect my client! I don't care who I make an enemy of!
I recently reached the scene in AAI2 where Miles gives up his badge for Kay's sake in my replay, and I wanted to take a closer look at it, because the first time around it was before I had touched DGS, and as I was approaching it I wanted to draw a comparison between the actions that cause Miles to give up his badge and the actions that lead to Ryunosuke losing the ability to stand in court. Ryunosuke and Miles here commit open acts of defiance against those in command of their legal careers. It is in the meaning of these acts and the differences in the context they're in that define them as characters and explain what being a defense attorney in the AA universe is really all about.
We're going back to Rise from the Ashes first, actually, and to the story behind the King of Prosecutor's trophy. The sharpest blade and the strongest shield -- what happens when they collide? This is the premise Ace Attorney tests. It is in those contradictions that we find truth.
But what happens when the system itself is the contradiction? What do you do against it? What do you have to do to go outside it?
Ryunosuke is fundamentally an outsider to the legal system, starting off in Japan as not even a law student and coming to Britain as a foreigner. He has a perspective on the system that stems from being outside of it and primarily being with other people who are outside of it as well.
Miles is as inside as inside gets. He's a well-respected prosecutor. We just talked about the King of Prosecutor's trophy, of which he was a recipient. But I think one factor in his decision that gets overlooked fairly often is the fact that just a month and a half or so earlier he stood in court as a defense attorney, and since then he's only gotten more and more of the experience. Phoenix placed a little crack in the shell when he asked Miles to take his badge and defend Iris, and the Investigations games work their way up to shattering it entirely.
But what brings them together is this: when the system is no longer interested in the truth, it becomes necessary to circumvent it.

I was gonna make this whole post when I got to DGS about my joke theory that every Ace Attorney defense attorney is bisexual and every prosecutor is gay. There was gonna be this whole punchline how Kristoph and Klavier are an intentional shake-up of that made-up formula yadda yadda… and then DGS went and ruined it for me because Kazuma is a defense attorney and there is not a shot in hell that man is attracted to women. Unless Kazuma decides to posthumously become a prosecutor in the last few cases of DGS2 or smth I have to regretfully inform you all that my silly little post is cancelled. I’ll be mourning it. Set out some flowers I’ll let Kazuma have a few

Insane to me when ppl criticize a mystery series having mysteries left “unfinished” at the end. Girl, it’s not “unfinished” it’s setting shit up for later, and, as someone joining in on a mystery series, you signed up for that being a possibility.
#aa opinions that annoy me#aa4 and dgs1 are not ‘unfinished’ they were meant to focus on a certain arc and set up things for a separate arc#aa4 just got shafted because capcom demanded an aa5 while Shu Takumi was too busy to write it but that’s not aa4s fault#and if you still feel that way about dgs1 knowing that it gets tied up it dgs2 youre insane#I can understand finding it worrying because of things that happen like the aa4 to aa5 transition#because gaming companies have ruined your trust#but to call it bad writing when you are playing a game you are well aware is part of a series#just sounds really short sighted#because the only alternative is to either simplify the story till it has lost so much that it isn’t the same anymore#or to haphazardly rush everything in one game#which would again take away a lot of other things and it would feel cheap#———#DGS 1 & 2 spoilers coming up#Like say whatever you want about the pacing of dgs1#(I loved it personally personally)#but so much of dgs2 would NOT have fucking hit the way it did without the character explorations in 1 and the time given to stew#If you think Kazuma dying in like episode 1 before we can get to know him at all#and then rushing Ryunosuke’s grief (which now surrounds a guy we arent nearly as endeared to) identity crisis and character development#through 1-2 1-3 and 1-4 so that you can get to a case 5 where ‘WHOAH that guy we dont know is back’#and then rush through the ruinion and brewing tension and explainations that were in 2-4 and 2-5 now into one case#…is somehow better than properly exploring Ryuu’s growth and the people & relationships he makes along the way#while letting Kazuma haunt the narrative for a good chunk of the games before suddenly being there again but not how we remember#than…idk what to say

The Adventure of the Repellant Philantropist
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Category: Gen Relationships: Ryunosuke Naruhodo & Susato Mikotoba Other relevant tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Bad Ending Word count: 972 Language: English Read on: AO3
Susato’s hands tremble as she cups them around Ryuunosuke’s ear to whisper, “Naruhodou-san. I don’t think we could have missed those bloodstains before.”
McGilded is evidently guilty, but this time, he doesn't die before as much comes to light.
Written for @aabadendingzine!
CW: mentions of blood and attempted arson.
Something is clearly amiss after the smoke has cleared.
Susato’s hands tremble as she cups them around Ryuunosuke’s ear to whisper, “Naruhodou-san. I don’t think we could have missed those bloodstains before.”
Ryuunosuke’s stomach churns. It takes great effort not to look away.
The open door of the omnibus affords them a perfect view of the carriage’s floor, splattered with red.
“Susato-san,” he says, voice quivering. He grasps blindly for her thin wrist as the courtroom begins to spin before his eyes. “Susato-san, do you think Mr McGilded—?”
-
Lord Chief Justice Stronghart idly twists the crown of his pocket watch. His wide shoulders block out the light filtering in through the dial-plate window at his back, casting him in shadow.
Ryuunosuke’s hair stands on end as Stronghart’s icy gaze sweeps over him.
“Fetch a ‘not guilty’-verdict in court tomorrow,” he says dispassionately, “and we can see about you taking your friend’s place.”
-
Susato’s lips press into a grim line.
She takes a step back from the omnibus carriage, pulling her hand free to steady Ryuunosuke where he sways with one leg up on the foothold. “The bloodstains’ presence supports the theory that the victim was dropped through the skylight, but…”
Ryuunosuke nods and releases a shuddering breath.
Through the window of the omnibus, he meets Crown Prosecutor Barok van Zieks’s keen, judgemental gaze.
-
McGilded only comes up to Ryuunosuke’s chin, yet he seems larger than life all the same.
He is as charismatic as he is magnanimous, all oracy and disarming smiles and philanthropic projects. His gestures are sweeping, his laughter booming, and Ryuunosuke, willing to trust in his client as much as Kazuma had once trusted him, wholeheartedly believes McGilded when he reassures him that this whole trial is nothing but a misunderstanding.
-
Ryuunosuke’s uniform jacket feels stifling as he resumes his place behind the defence’s bench. Susato stands wordlessly by his side, and the sword resting at Ryuunosuke’s hip suddenly weighs a thousand pounds.
There is no misunderstanding; McGilded may very well be guilty.
-
“But what if you can’t be sure of your client’s innocence?” asks Ryuunosuke.
Kazuma regards him coolly over the edge of his English textbook. “Then it’s a question of faith,” he replies, “or of knowing when to cut your losses.”
-
In the end, no matter how much they go back and forth to no avail, an aggrieved Prosecutor van Zieks must concede that their evidence is too muddled and contradictory to deliver a verdict on.
“Counsel,” the judge prompts Ryuunosuke, finally, “your closing statement?”
Next to Ryuunosuke, Susato inhales sharply. “You can still plead—correctly,” she says, all steel and resolve. Her hand clenches into a fist. “I believe it’s what Kazuma-sama would have done.”
-
“Do you really think I can pull it off, Susato-san? If I don’t, then we’ll be sent home and Kazuma’s dream—”
“Naruhodou-san.”
Ryuunosuke’s mouth snaps shut. Susato smiles at him, her shoulder digging into his biceps in the hackney cart to the Old Bailey. “Let’s simply pursue the truth to the best of our ability. Nothing more.”
-
And the truth is—
“I believe my client to be guilty, Your Lordship,” Ryuunosuke concludes.
In the witness stand, McGilded snarls.
Ryuunosuke wonders if that expression was the last thing Mr Mason saw before McGilded drove a knife into his gut.
-
“And if it truly comes down to it, Naruhodou-san, I trust you to make the right call.” Susato smooths her hands over her hakama. “Regardless of what it means for us.”
-
In the defendant’s antechamber, escaping judgement yet, McGilded’s cheery demeanour returns. He smiles with too many teeth now; a predator caught out for his crimes, yet ever reluctant to admit to them.
“Ye gave me a right scare!” he laughs and presses a guinea into Ryuunosuke’s palm with force. The coin’s edge bites into his skin. “Don’t joke around like that tomorrow.”
And then, he makes for the courtroom again.
-
There is no blood on the floor.
There is no bloodstain on the lip of the skylight.
-
Except that the doors remain barred to McGilded.
“There must be a mistake,” he tries, pleasant smile twitching, “we had an arrangement, ye see, Sir—"
“Whatever arrangements you had have become irrelevant,” says Crown Prosecutor van Zieks, looming in the doorway like an omen. “They found an incendiary agent installed inside the omnibus.”
-
“Fetch a ‘not guilty’-verdict in court tomorrow—”
-
Ryuunosuke’s breath catches.
“What?” McGilded hisses, sounding genuinely surprised.
“It has since been removed,” says Van Zieks coolly. “Pray, understand that we cannot let anyone close to the evidence again under these circumstances.”
-
Miss Gina Lestrade flinches when McGilded clasps her shoulder good-naturedly, stood by her side in the witness stand.
The fabric of her sleeve crinkles beneath his fingers.
-
The dinner at their hotel that night looks delectable. It’s a shame Ryuunosuke can barely bring himself to eat a bite. Across the table from him, Susato isn’t faring much better.
“You did the right thing today,” she says, pushing a carrot around her plate.
-
“Even the guilty will seek legal counsel,” says Kazuma, leaning back in his chair in the reading hall. “That doesn’t mean it’s my job to get them off.”
-
“—in addition to tampering with evidence, the court hereby finds the accused, Mr Magnus McGilded, guilty of the murder of Mr ‘Thrice-fired’ Mason, as well as perjury, obstruction of justice—”
-
“Fetch a ‘not guilty’-verdict—”
-
Lord Stronghart barely acknowledges them, now.
“I’d made my conditions clear,” he says dully. “You did not manage to do as I asked, therefore, I cannot allow you to fill in for your late friend. Neither will you be allowed to practice law in our proud country. And that’s final.”
Susato inhales sharply. “But Mr McGilded was guilty—”
Stronghart’s steely gaze finally snaps up, boring into Ryuunosuke.
“Understand, then, that you weren’t meant to take Mr Asougi’s place.”

💔for dgs…😼
💔: If you had to remove one major character from the series, who would you choose?
Egg. I'd take him out of dgs and put him in his own media, whether that be a movie, an anime, or a game, where he can get his own story all for himself, and shine all on his own. /jk i'm not really joking though i need that-
....lol for a serious answer though, that's tough. I suppose I'd say Kazuma? Although I love what DGS2 does with him (albeit I wish he had muchhhh more screentime, but that's a whole other thing), I've still wondered a lot what the second game would have been like if he'd stayed dead, and how drastically the plot would have changed. It's bittersweet to think about. :')
Thank youuu!

dgs1&2 spoilers - Victorian era and ACD stuff
dawg nobody talks about how Victorian dgs / tgaa is - I'm not talking about accuracy BC obviously there's sm wiggle room of bizarre ace attorney shenanigans + how early world exhibition is for the time + sholmes and iris inventions going on but I am so in love w the little pieces of evidence that didn't need to include stuff like how diseases actually travelled thru water and the unspoken practice of graverobbing going on amongst medical students. Even the fucking window law - I'm double checking but I hear that's a real thing?
And also in love at how great it is at being a sherlock Holmes homage BC they don't copy paste cases from the book they just take what serves their own cases. Like the hound of the Baskervilles has to be my favorite fucking use of the case while also harking back to serial killer type stuff - like they could've used the ACD villain for that title but they just changed the motivation to "eat the rich" (as one YT comment I saw commented about klint puts it haha)
