“You know damn well what I’m referring to.” Kokoro hissed, her glare narrowing.

“Tsk,” Slade pouted, crossing one leg over the other. “You know full well you brought this upon yourself.”

“Bullshit. You and...Whoever else is up there in this ‘writers room’ made this happen!”

“Does that matter, though? You still chose to do what you did. Your actions were your own.”

“I did NOT!” Kokoro slammed both hands on the desk. “You heard what Tsumugi said, this was all scripted! I had no free will!”

Slade put back the nameplate she’d knocked out of place.

“Figures she wouldn’t tell you about that part,” He sighed. “Of course she’s still embarrassed about that...”

Kokoro was confused. “...What?”

Slade smirked, laughing to himself.

“About what!?” She demanded.

“The script ended at chapter 3.”

Kokoro froze. “...Huh...?”

“And that,” Slade pointed with a grin. “Is the money shot.”

“W-wait, what do you mean it ended at chapter 3!? It still went on for-”

“Three more chapters after that, yes yes I know.” He spun his chair around, making a dismissive gesture with his hand. “That was completely out of her control.”

“What!? How!?”

“The script - at least, how she originally wrote it,” Slade explained. “Was meant to end at the chapter 3 trial. All of you were meant to vote for our beloved protagonist and get executed for making the wrong vote, and then Ayano would commit suicide. But because of Jasper turning the trial on its head, the killing game went further than Tsumugi intended.”

Kokoro took a horrified step back. “...W-wait...” Her eyes widened as the realisation dawned on her. “...You’re saying...You’re saying that-”

Slade spun the chair back around with a smile. “Everything that happened after the third trial was unscripted.”

Kokoro was shellshocked into silence.

“Why do you think Monokuma didn’t interfere, hm?” Slade continued, a mocking superiority entering his voice. “When Jasper lied about the existence of a traitor. Why do you think he didn’t stop him?”

“B-but...He-”

“Above all else, why do you think Rantaro didn’t kiss you back?”

She stopped.

“Yes that usually is the moment the hero would kiss the love interest, and the sappy music would start playing, yadda yadda yadda. You were on the money in that regard.” He went on. “But we’d gone past that point. He had no interest in you. You should’ve known that, you know?”

“But he was meant to!” Kokoro sputtered. “I...! He just had to, he-”

“But he didn’t.” Slade’s expression darkened. “He outgrew his role as the protagonist.” He prodded a finger into her chest. “But you didn’t outgrow your role as his sidekick. You really should have, at this point.”

Kokoro was silent. Her mouth pressed into a line and she turned her eyes to the floor.

“Well if we’re done here,” Slade pulled his chair back. “Are you going to stop berating me? For forcing you to follow orders that were actually tasks you were completing of your own accord?”

Slade smiled. “Good girl.” He leaned back in his chair, putting his feet up on the desk as his eyes gleamed menacingly. “Welcome to Danganronpa 53.”
