21 So LONG AS THE REALM of necessity remains a social dream, dreaming will remain a social necessity. The spectacle is the bad dream of modern society in chains, expressing nothing more than its wish for sleep. The spectacle is the guardian of that sleep.
The thesis infers that we are always wanting more but never actually achieving any foreseeable goal, the dream is an illusion because of the false dissatisfaction it gives, or doesnt. It doesn't seem as though we are free to just enjoy the live we live appreciating the real things we have that mean the most to us, we are seeing tainted needs by wanting more. We are always developing more likes, dislikes, developing taste, therefore always changing the things that which we desire. Because we will never be fully satisfied if the statement in the thesis remains (- as ‘long as the realm of necessity remains a social dream, dreaming will remain a social necessity.’) we strive to want and achieve more due to others around us changing as well. Does the spectacle act as the bad dream and the guardian? Do dreams reassure us that we are sleeping?
The image I chose represents Plato's allegory of the cave and the prisoners represents the consumers of never achieving the real goal that is important, but instead being blinded to thinking that what we think we need but it is just a trick to make you believe that we will be happy if we have a certain good, whether it works, has a purpose, or even makes you even the slightest bit happy has no actual concern for suppliers and sellers, there only concern is profit (the people buying the products). There is hope to break out of the chains of the deluded so called ‘dreams’.

I chose this image since it somehow shows the attitude of people depicted in thesis 21. While people keep dreaming of something good, something they desire to have, this does not becomes reality; the spectacles make them merely to sit down and dream about their own wish. Just like the woman in my image: lying in the bed, doing nothing but looking at her phone. Considering that what people wish hardly exists in the reality, as it was described in the reading, phone represents 'the wish' quite effectively. Meanwhile, dark background also fits to the concept of that "the spectacle is the bad dream".

I have chosen this scene  from the Pink Floyd film, The Wall, as is showing an image in which everybody is asleep, brainwashed , sleep walkers, blend in, not being their true self, and falling into a a massive meat mixer so they all become a unity of meat , of mass production. They are not individuals anymore, they are a copy of whatever society wants them to be, and society wants them to be asleep , to participate in this collective sleep dream, absolute denial of life, fake illusion, unnatural, involution ,superficial , and copying whatever image the spectacle  society thinks is good for them. sheaps !

So long as the realm of necessity remains a social dream, dreaming will remain a social necessity. The spectacle is the bad dream of modem society in chains, expressing nothing more than its wish for sleep. The spectacle is the guardian of that sleep.
I have illustrated a rather literal interpretation of this thesis. An ‘average businessman’ represents modern society and is physically detained by chains with depictions of popular logos and brands. The character is shown as tired from a twitchy eyelid and bags under his eyes - he ‘wishes for sleep’ - in order to escape from the pressures of the spectacle.

The thesis infers that we are always wanting more but never actually achieving any foreseeable goal, the dream is an illusion because of the false dissatisfaction it gives, or doesnt. It doesn’t seem as though we are free to just enjoy the live we live appreciating the real things we have that mean the most to us, we are seeing tainted needs by wanting more. “So long as the realm of necessity remains a social dream, dreaming will remain a social necessity. The spectacle is the bad dream of modern society in chains, expressing nothing more than its wish for sleep. The spectacle is the guardian of that sleep.”
To me, the world of social media Apple is a part of is the best modern example of Debord’s ‘spectacle’. In this billboard advert, Apple presents us with an ideal or goal and frames it in the context of its product, the iPhone. Rather than taking us there and helping us to directly live, it perpetuates “society’s real unreality”. When Debord refers to sleep, I interpret that as representing our inner happiness, understanding and acceptance of self. In this case the spectacle guards us from that sleep by confusing reality with image, selling us an ideal that Apple, in fact, cannot provide.

SO LONG AS THE REALM of necessity remains a social dream, dreaming will remain a social necessity. The spec- tacle is the bad dream of modern society in chains, express- ing nothing more than its wish for sleep. The spectacle is the guardian of that sleep.
I have choose this photo because i was looking at the first line “so long as the realm of necessity remains a social dream, dreaming will remain a social necessity” I choose this because everyone now in this time cant keep away from social media , even when sleeping people could be thinking about it and how people dress and whats the next trend , or people cant sleep because their desperate to be liked on social media so this image is of some one sleeping but thinking about how many likes they have on social media .

‘So long as the realm of necessity remains a social dream, dreaming will remain a social necessity. The Spectacle is the bad dream if modern society in chains, expressing nothing more than its wish for sleep. The spectacle is the guardian of that sleep.’
I chose this image as it visualises the concept of an endless cycle. Debord used the metaphor of sleep and dreaming to describe how modern society are in a 'bad dream' of wanting to stop consuming and being materialistic, 'wishing for sleep'. The endless stairs visualise society being trapped in a loop of consumerism by the Spectacle.
