Super Mario Bros. Wonder doesn't sound like the title of a real Mario game. It sounds like either something I'd see in our dreams or some obscure fan-made Mario flash game.

Watching the direct trailers after the direct since it streamed while we were asleep. I gotta say that Mario RPG remake though. The graphics + art style look absolutely amazing and all of the characters are so so tiny <3

Wow, I'm so late at everything recently, I'm working on some stuff that I can't wait to show, but in the meantime...

This direct man, was one of the greatest. Alright, I'm a Mario and Pikmin fan, so it was obviously my best time to be there. ( I can finally play Pikmin 2 again ! You don't understand how delighted I am right now.)

Super Mario RPG remake, I can't believe it, Peach will have her own game again, Luigi's mansion 2 remake, and I only mention Mario's game here !  And Super Mario Bros Wonder is the breath I needed for 10 years. (Although Mario Maker 2 was a pretty good time). Daisy and Yoshi are playable, New adorable art style, finally new and crazy mechanic, and for some reason, Mario elephant. I mean, look at him. It's the cutest weird thing ever, and I'm all for it.

So, yeah, I'm not gonna say that fan art are fully back, sure, but I needed to make at least one thing here.

I love that you asked this because Daisy is my favorite, design-wise out of the playable characters lol

Here's her bio from the official website for reference (and what I'm basing these ideas off of):

Daisy has only recently struck out on her own and has been doing all kinds of different things to keep herself afloat. Contracted work, treasure hunting, perhaps more questionable(tm) jobs here and there.

This is why she had to get so good at gunslinging. Some jobs won't guarantee her and sort of safety; she had to learn to protect herself when necessary, and her safety was likely compromised more than she would prefer.

Joining Quincy's crew is the first form of stability she's had in her adult life. She's glad to have a roof over her head that she'll actually see for an extended period of time lol

Very very loyal to Qunicy and her crewmates. You got her back? She's got yours. She likes that she's found a place to belong and she isn't gonna squander it.

She is also excited to see more of the world around her--there's so many places she hasn't been or seen. Who cares if there's danger! she's used to it, just show her more of the world and how cool it can be.

Something tells me she's like. A VERY good dancer and absolutely blows Quincy out of the water in that aspect.

Her scarf's a comfort object. In addition to keeping her warm she fidgets with it when she's antsy or nervous

She has a slightly higher than average peripheral vision than most Steambots thanks to how BIG her eyes are. She very much uses it to her advantage and it's another reason why she's so good at gunslinging

cringe is dead! I’m gonna talk about Mario. So I saw a video of Alpharad going through the Mario Kart ride at Super Nintendo World, and it made me realize something.

Team Mario is shown as being Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad, as per usual, but also Yoshi (which is expected)... and Daisy. Move a few months later...

And you’ve got Team Mario in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi... and Daisy. They drop her so casually too, in the trailer. She shows up, and she’s just part of that cast, about as important in the art as Peach or Toad or Yoshi. I think this is the start of a genuine, conscious effort to put Daisy at the forefront of the Mario series- likely so that they can have two women as playable characters per game more consistently, without having to justify Rosalina just showing up out of nowhere instead of her starship, or make up a new unique skill for Toadette that’s different from Toad himself. I think we’re going to start seeing Daisy as a major character- maybe even in...

The unnamed Peach Game? Toadette might be relegated to a skin of Toad (as with Blue Toad), as well. I could easily see this being something that continues into further games, especially with the creativity that’s being pretty obviously put into the new Mario games (Odyssey and Wonder are both so much more creative than the RELATIVELY lackluster New Super Mario Bros. and Mario 3D World.)

Like are we just gonna straight up ignore the fact that we can play as different colored yoshis in a mainline Mario game???

Super Mario Bros Wonder Direct Impressions

After having a day to digest the Super Mario Bros Wonder presentation I think I can properly give my two cents. I don't think I have been this excited for a 2D Mario game in a long time. It's quite insane really how many new ideas they have managed to cram in here. It practically makes New Super Mario Bros look like a prototype by comparison.

In terms of visuals, I seriously don't get where some people are coming from claiming Wonder still looks generic and bland. In what we have seen so far this game absolutely obliterates NSMB in terms of art direction and visual variety. There are also some neat twists on familiar Mario level themes. Fluff Puff Peaks looks like they went and combined the ice and sky worlds into one which is a much more interesting take on the usual Mario world tropes. You can really tell how they are embracing some of the inventive wackiness found in the recent 3D Mario titles.

The playable character roster on display here is just insane. We got the whole NSMB gang plus Peach, Daisy, Toadette 4 Yoshis, and even Nabbit. I know people will dump on Yoshi and Nabbit for basically being the "You Suck." mode but I think it's great to have them for less experienced players. There is just something very surreal about seeing Daisy fully playable in a Mario game that isn't a sports game, or a spin off. I hope this marks the start of Nintendo actually making her a genuine part of the core Mario cast going down the road.

The powerups my god the new powerups. Elephant Mario is such a neat twist on the usual animal costume power up Deviantart jokes aside. Bubble Mario I am surprised they didn't come up with sooner especially considering it was in a ROM hack beforehand and I love how they basically brought back the Spin Drill from Super Mario Galaxy 2 and translated it into 2D.

The Wonder Effects are a perfect way of keeping things fresh in the event people thought 2D Mario was getting too boring and predictable. I have a feeling we are only scratching the surface with what Nintendo has shown us.

The badge system feels like a natural extension of the 2D Mario formula. Nintendo has essentially taking the modern game design philosophy of allowing people to customize the game to suit their play style and applied it into 2D Mario. The speedrunning potential of some of these badges is likely gonna be nuts.

Okay I really didn't have Nintendo giving Super Mario Bros Wonder its own Dark Souls style multiplayer mode on my bingo card. Honestly, I think making online play more focused on assisting and helping other players rather than competitive co-op was a smart move given how much of a mess online co-op has been in previous Mario games that had it. I really get the sense the Mario dev team applied a lot of the lessons they learned with online multiplayer in previous Mario titles to create an experience that was better suited for 2D Mario.

After seeing everything new about Super Mario Bros Wonder I think I can see why Nintendo felt the need to give this game it's own dedicated Nintendo Direct presentation. This truly feels like the proper next generation of 2D Mario in ways the later New Super Mario Bros games never did.

I've actually never played Super Mario RPG (partially because it was never released in Australia until the Wii Virtual Console 😔) So this is kinda gonna be like a brand new game to me (And then I can go and play the original version too 😎)

Princess Peach game 😭😭😭 I have no idea what you actually do in the game but I'm still excited – it's been way too long since Peach starred in a game on her own! It's interesting that it isn't related to Super Princess Peach at all

Luigi's Mansion 2 remaster! A few years ago my parents watched me play through Luigi's Mansion 3 and they wanted to see 2 as well but there's no way to get a 3DS game on the TV screen... Now I can finally show them Luigi's Mansion 2 😌

I've still gotta play Mario + Rabbids at some point, I've heard pretty good things about it

That bathroom Mario Kart course??? Hello??? It looks so cool??? It really reminds me of the Ribbon Road glow-up from the OG MK8 DLC (That's a lot of acronyms)

I was hoping they'd eventually do a brand new 2D Mario game!!! I knew it wouldn't be in the NSMB style because it might feel redundant when you can just go make your own NSMB levels in Mario Maker 2

I love how wacky and weird it is??? It's nice to see Mario embrace its weirdness haha

And playable Daisy is pretty big!! She was playable in Mario Run so it makes sense but it's still cool to see her in a mainline Mario game for the first time since like... her debut 😆 I just hope you can play as other Toad colours besides yellow

The only thing I didn't like was the voice used for the talking flowers, it sounded kinda annoying to me. That's why I don't get everyone clamouring for full voice acting in Nintendo games – the American voices they use are always so annoying 😆 Hopefully they change that, or have an option to turn it off or something. Or maybe the talking flowers are only in the tutorial level

It's kinda annoying to see people commenting like "Finally, an original Mario game, everything's been so safe and samey lately!!!" And it's like... did you all forget about Odyssey 😆 That game was super unique! Though I guess the sentiment is fitting for 2D Mario specifically

With all of this plus the movie, it's a good time to be a Mario fan 😎😎😎

honestly most of that did not really appeal to me because i’m not a person who cares for remakes and the smrpg one specifically kinda looks like bdsp to me in a way that i didn’t love. i also don’t own sparks of hope in the first place and just never really buy dlc in general so even if i did idk if i’d be super excited. i’m super happy for everyone who is excited about this though :-] it’s probably gonna be nice to have portable smrpg + a version that isn’t super clunky to play like it is on wiiu LOL even if i’m probably not gonna buy it. i’m also excited for the rehashed soundtrack, i usually don’t like how they sound in remakes vs the originals but you never know

the new peach centric game looks pretty neat too even though we didn’t really get any substantial gameplay footage. at first i was like "is this a super princess peach remake??" before i saw more of it. also not really looking like my sorta thing but it’s great to see because we haven’t had a peach game before or after super princess peach. idk if i dig the semi-3D gameplay though. it feels weird having a lot of horizontal but very little vertical movement. and like it’s cool that we’re getting a new game but that showcase really gave us nothing LOL like i have no real idea what type of game this is

tbh idk the point of the dark moon rerelease though like it doesn’t look THAT much better to me and it was already playable on a portable console and there’s already lm3 on switch? but like i guess again if you don’t have a 3ds you might want to play it? but it’s like not really as widely loved as the original or lm3 which is already for switch but whatever. it does have its fans and i’m sure there’s people interested in playing it. + they already ported the original to 3ds so just putting it on switch too i guess would seem kinda weird

super mario wonder also looks really neat?? it’s weird that the only game i really think i’m considering getting is the 2D platformer LMFAO. mario turned into an elephant and said wowie zowie 🥺 also this is the first time daisy has ever been playable in a nsmb type game which is sick. peach looks really weirdly short though compared to M&L which is kind of odd because when she was playable in other games they never had to do that so it’s jarring to see. the playable cast might be bigger than shown too because i doubt they’d get rid of rosalina after 3d world and i’m thinking toadette will probably be there. the style seems cute even if it’s jarring to see after like 20 years of the nsmb look

i also don’t own mk8 deluxe LMAO but it’s cool you all got more stages

overall not really a direct for me but i hope everyone has a good time with all this stuff :-] people who can’t buy smrpg on wiiu can play it portably on switch which’ll be nice, peach fans get a new game, mario + rabbids fans have been looking forward to this dlc so i hope it met expectations, luigi’s mansion fans people who have never played it can try dark moon and the new 2D mario looks fun 👍👍👍

Gotta celebrate Daisy being playable in Super Mario Wonder. We're finally gonna see her get her butt burned in a main platformer.

Overall that was a good direct, really incredible Mario shit all around. The Mario RPG remake and a new Peach solo game beautiful impossible miracles, they freed Dark Moon from the 3DS, and Daisy is playable in a platformer for the first time since Run.

I am glad they abandoned the New Super Mario Bros branding, and this one does seem like a genuine evolution. It looks kind of like somewhere between Mario USA and Mario 3, which I'm cool with. I wish they'd work more of Mario's 3D moveset into the 2D games, like the dive and roll, but I really like how whacky the power ups are this time. Thy mentioned they were gonna be using trends from Mario Maker levels in future Mario games, and I have to assume this is the first time bearing fruit since this is the first Mario platformer since Mario Maker 2, if you don't count Bowsers Fury.

- i never played detective pikachu the first but i love the gruff voice adorable animal trope so i might have to give this one a look

- super mario rpg real!!! i'm really excited!!! look at the little scrunklys!!! but god this trend of bland ass white bread UI in mario spinoff games needs to stop, now, for real

- new princess peach game could be neat, hopefully it'll give her a chance to actually be cool and heroic instead of just... walking around on a stage... and hopefully it doesn't have a vibrator joke in it this time...

- metal gear solid 1 thru 3 on switch??? and this is only volume one??? now i don't wanna make any assumptions, but platinum games has a pretty good track record on this console... i'm just saying...

- penny's big breakaway looks insanely fun holy moly!!! it's by the team behind sonic mania so i got some very high hopes for this one

- i'm not typically a jrpg fan but i really like the vibe star ocean is going for, also it's a motoi sakuraba game so you know it's gonna slap

- mario kart bathroom course and hot wheels unleashed 2, tiny cars in normal sized environments continues to be the pinnacle of racing game design (well, that and futuristic antigravity ships, but god knows we're not getting another f-zero anytime soon)

- if you thought mario tripping on shrooms jokes were bad before, get ready because super mario bros wonder is gonna make them ten times worse! on the bright side though, daisy is playable in an actual real mario game!!! this is officially the greatest 2d platformer of all time!!!

- being a kid icarus fan is pain. being a tomodachi life fan is pain. being both is a fate i would not wish on my worst enemy. stay strong, my friends. i promise it'll be okay.

- overall this direct was pretty good! i give it uhhh an 8/10, goodnight everybody
