The Slayers to Gundam Pipeline

So, since my wife (@chrissysky) and I were talking about it again, I thought I would share the Slayers to Gundam pipeline and how it works/worked.

It starts with the fact that my wife loves Slayers. One of her favorite characters (if not her absolute favorite) is Xellos, voiced by Ishida Akira. One day (years ago) she was looking at Ishida Akira's voice work and I commented on the fact that he was previously in D.N.Angel.

I had watched D.N.Angel as a teenager and was happy to tell her that it was a small fandom with a short anime and a lot of gay, and in fact Ishida Akira was voicing one half of the primary m/m pairing from the series. My wife (in typical fashion) said "sounds great, when do we start?"

Now, it should be noted that I was not trying to sell her on watching the series but also that I am basically always down for watching D.N.Angel again. So we did and (as usual) it was great. And then (inevitably) we got to the end and wished (futilely) for more.

First, my wife decided to cope with the lack by collecting (all that was available in the US) and reading (what never made it to the US) the manga. When she ran out of that and was (again) bemoaning her lack I mentioned that back when I was originally in the D.N.Angel fandom there had been a lot of crossover with some other small-ish fandoms including one for Kid Kaito.

My wife had previously wanted to watch Detective Conan back when it was on Toonami as Case Closed but had never gotten around to it. Apparently me mentioning Kid Kaito brought that desire flooding back so often she went to procure it... at which point she realized there were 700+ episodes and so put that idea to the side as something she had neither the time nor the energy for.

Likely it would have remained that way except CoViD came and with it layoffs and lockdowns. And so my wife found herself without possession of a job and not easily able to secure another one in her field. Thus she fatefully declared "well, I guess I don't have anything better to do" and sat down to watch every episode of Detective Conan.

And she watched, and she watched, and she watched. And then (sometime in the 700s I think) she said "huh, you know, this reminds me of something". Because you see, dear readers, that quarantine was hard on all of us and our friend (@hikariokami) had been coping by trying to get my wife (and me to be fair) to watch the original Gundam UC series and apparently some of what she was saying had penetrated my wife's brain for later recall.

So through this process she discovered that the creator of Detective Conan is a huge Gundam nerd and essentially stole borrowed several characters and transplanted them into his series. A fact which amused my wife so much that she decided she needed to watch Gundam as well in order to better understand the absolute lack of nuance in Detective Conan.

And now every time there's a new Detective Conan episode with my beloved Kaito in it and we sit down to watch, I am also regaled with details about how this all relates to UC Gundam that honestly go in one ear and immediately out the other (thank you ADHD) but at least it makes my wife happy.

The Lifespan of Love

It felt as though it was just recently that the artwork had gotten to understand Argentine. Every now and then, Qualia would recall many things about him. Of how he would often seek to give it a “heart”. Not that either of them were able to understand what that was. What exactly was a heart and why was it important that the artwork needed one? The very idea was completely foreign to it.

Time and time again, Qualia would find the other looking quite dejected on the matter.

“...Why is it that I can’t seem to give you a heart?”

Yet, it could only give him a reassuring smile in response.

Yes! It would be so understated but sweet. Satoshi needs and deserves a parent who loves him unconditionally. Not to mention Grandpa!Alfred, who I think would probably be a big help getting Satoshi to feel welcome and comfortable.

Not to mention Satoshi had such a lonely childhood, think how nice it would be for him to suddenly have siblings who adore him? He might be overwhelmed at first, but just like Daisuke, I think they would grow on him. Dick is like the greatest, most supportive big brother in the world. Jason is rough around the edges, but cares about his family. Tim and Satoshi could definitely connect on an intellectual detective level. Like you said, Cass and Satoshi are both pretty reserved in expression, and along with Damian, they have dysfunctional villainous family members who messed them up in common.

And I'm sure all of them (plus the other extended Batfamily members) wouldn't hesitate to step in if anyone tried to mess with Satoshi regarding family curse stuff ever again. Plus, at least a few Batfam members have some experience with best friends/crushes who are rays of sunshine, so they might have some useful advice to give there!

@peachsunset​ The other great thing about it is that Satoshi would be possibly the only Batkid other than Cass to be 100% unbothered by how undemonstrative Bruce is.

Because (a) he’s the same way, and (b) he’s so completely unused to sincere affection that Bruce giving him the occasional “Well done, son” shoulder pat would make him absolutely thrilled.

To the outside world it would look like they barely ever emote towards each other, but they’d both know that they’re declaring their unconditional love every time they give each other a tiny smile, and it would be great.

Where Daisuke is visiting Paris and Ladybug and Chat Noir have to help him and Dark recover some Hikari artwork from Gabriel/Hawkmoth. Hell, have Daisuke know about Miraculouses just because it sounds like something his family WOULD know about.

The high school detective sighed as he studied the scene before him. Something wasn’t right.

Father’s life A vampire? There’s simply no way they existed.

Just as he thought that, the teen spotted a silhouette on top of the building.

The moment the figure started to jump, the detective quickly moved in front of the priest.

“Everything’s going to be alright.” He turned to face the father only to freeze at the sight. SLOOOOORPPP Said father let the body of a nearby policeman drop unceremoniously from his grip. Whereas the priest's eyes were once golden, they now shone a bright crimson. “...Why?” A cruel smile formed on the other’s face. “Why? Shouldn’t you be asking yourself why you fell for this ruse? Though it is a little too late for that.”He quickly shut his eyes, awaiting death.

BAAAANNNG A gunshot sounded.

The teen opened his eyes, seeing blond haired father screech and turn to ashes.

Standing right by the remains was the bespectacled man who he originally thought was the vampire.

The other ran a hand through his dark brown hair with a sigh.

Upon looking at the detective, the strange man gave him a smile.

“I don’t suppose you know of a place to eat nearby, do you?”

A New Artwork Approaches Just then, a thought passed Daisuke’s mind. That somewhere out there, other Hikari artworks could be suffering the same fate as the Crimson Wings. Many scenarios played through his head, each with terrible endings. “I don’t mean to disturb you but…What are you doing out here by yourself?” A feminine voice interrupted said train of thoughts. The teen looked up to see the owner of the voice, a young woman with shoulder length ebony hair in a ponytail tied off to the side. The color of her eyes, a caramel almost reminded of the Harada twins and the air about them seemed familiar yet he couldn’t seem to place it. “It’s been a long day and I wanted to collect my thoughts.” Daisuke laughed nervously, rubbing the back of his neck. “I see. A penny for your thoughts?” She gave him a reassuring smile in reply. Was it really okay to admit what was going on to a stranger who probably knew nothing about the whole situation? If anything, it was completely risky to do so. As if reading his thoughts, the stranger spoke once more. “You don’t have to tell me everything that’s going on. After I am nothing but someone that isn’t involved in your life. Here, have some candy, it might make you feel a bit better.” She handed over a piece of candy. Not wanting to refuse this gesture of kindness, he took it. “Thank you…” Except the moment the teen unwrapped it, a potent smell reached his nose causing him to drop the treat. Maybe it was just fate’s way of telling him to stop stealing artworks. She blinked in confusion. “Ah…Did I accidentally hand you the durian candy? Sorry. Let me give you something else.” “You don’t have to.” Daisuke pulled out a handkerchief, holding it to his nose. “If you say so. Though you no longer seem to be stuck thinking about whatever it was that was on your mind.” She was right, despite the fact that he ended up smelling that horrible candy. “Thank you again.” It wasn’t how the teen wished to solve the issue but Daisuke supposed that it was good to have a break every now and then. Suddenly, a phone rang. It didn’t seem to be his. The other took out their cell phone and answered. “Sorry Kounosuke-san, I must have lost track of the time. I’ll see you in a bit, alright?” She turned to him. “Looks like I have to head out in a bit. It’s been nice meeting you, I don’t think I ever caught your name.” “It’s Niwa Daisuke.”  He held out his hand. “Akabane Tama. Next time you ever feel like mulling over something again, you should come to this place and ask for me.” She shook his hand, leaving him with a card. Blue Parrot? He’ll have to check out the bar some time.

Rating the Fashion in D.N.Angel Art (Pt. 1)

(Because this meme is fun, and these looks deserve to be appreciated. Or in some cases mocked. :-P)

A nice, comforting place to start off the list. This striped hoodie is adorable, and very much in-keeping with Daisuke’s canon sense of style. The blue at the neck of his shirt provides a little contrast while still keeping it simple. He looks cute, wholesome, approachable. Exactly how I like my Daisuke. His cuteness is apparently so intense that he radiates little stars. Valid.

10/10 Classic boy-next-door charm.

This totally looks like a boyband album cover, but in a way that’s working for me, I’m not gonna lie. I like how they’re coordinated in their all-white outfits but the looks are still individual. Dark’s jacket is very cute, as is Daisuke’s in a more relaxed way. I like the little wing detail on the back of Satoshi’s shirt. Honestly my only criticism of this is why Satoshi looks like something splattered in his eye.

9/10 BACKSTREET’S BACK ALRIGGGGGHT

I thought I should include at least one piece that gives you a good look at the school uniforms. They’re very cute! The red-and-white color scheme is nice. (It was thoughtful of the school to match their uniforms to the protagonist’s coloring.) Those little cropped jackets on the girls’ uniform are very cute, and I like the detailing on the collars too.

9/10 Stylishly preppy without being too much.

I don’t actually think this look is objectively good. The arm-warmers look like random pieces of fabric that he tied in place with string. The shirt looks less “artfully ripped” and more like it’s being eaten away by acid. But none of that actually matters, because he is SELLING it. Look at the absolute confidence in those eyes. That look says “Maybe my shirt is disintegrating, because it JUST CAN’T HANDLE BEING THIS CLOSE TO MY BODY.” What he’s wearing is actually irrelevant. He looks absolutely badass.

10/10 FIERCE. Tyra Banks would approve.

It’s hard to put my finger on what exactly isn’t working about this. Riku’s shirt feels like it would be more in-keeping with her style if it didn’t have the lacing up the front. Risa kinda looks like she’s wearing a lacy nightgown with gloves. Neither of these looks is terrible, but I’m just not really feeling it. I feel like Sugisaki was maybe still figuring out Riku and Risa’s styles when she drew this.

6.5/10 Room for improvement.

A mixed bag! Daisuke might be wearing The Jacket(TM), although the coloring is different than when Sugisaki colored The Jacket(TM) later. In any case, he looks great. The combination of the black jacket with the red/white/black plaid trim looks very crisp and classic. Satoshi, on the other hand, looks low-key like a sleazy casino owner. The high collar/huge houndstooth print/necklace(?) combination is just too much. 

5/10 Even my love for Satoshi cannot make that look work.

CUUUUTE. This is giving me very Bertie Wooster vibes, for some reason. He looks like the spoiled but good-natured heir to a fortune whose butler keeps needing to get him out of shenanigans. I would be down for this AU.

8.5/10 Fingers crossed for a Black Butler crossover.

WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE. I’m not actually sure I have words to do justice to how bad this is. It just looks like random pieces of fabric thrown together haphazardly. The little metal thingies make no sense. The orange-and-gold color scheme is garish. Nothing about this looks good, but beyond that, nothing about it even makes sense. This is the nadir of D.N.Angel fashion. For my sanity I’m going to hope it’s referencing some series I’m not familiar with.

-10/10 WTF.

An excellent palate-cleanser! I think the fact that they’re sharing a scarf is adorable. Riku’s whole look here is perfection to me - the way the red roses on her sleeves coordinate with her red gloves is VERY stylish, and those cute buttons at the wrists? Fantastic. Daisuke’s shirt seems nice, though I can’t for the life of me figure out what it says. Points for having a shared color scheme, although the fact that his shirt is white and hers is cream does clash a bit, arguably.

9.5/10 Overall, a great example of couple dressing done right.

THE JACKET(TM)!!!!!!! You can’t actually see that much of what he’s wearing (although the art itself is gorgeous), but I am incapable of being objective about this. Seeing this just reminds me of how much I adore these scenes, and this arc as a whole. Also the word bubble here is literally Satoshi talking about how he’s dying, and that is not remotely okay. Someone hug him, please.
